As we reflect on the memories made in Chan Sui Kau Hall throughout the year, we're reminded of the unique experiences and challenges that come with living in a community of diverse individuals. Despite these challenges, through hard work, understanding, and mutual respect, we've come together to create a home away from home for ourselves and our fellow residents. This yearbook serves as a testament to those efforts and the bonds we've formed during our time in this amazing residence. As we look back on this past year, I am struck by the resilience and spirit of the Chan Sui Kau Hall community.

Despite the challenges we faced, we remained committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all residents. I am proud of the many accomplishments we achieved together, from organizing successful events to supporting each other through difficult times.

As some of our residents prepare to graduate and move on to new adventures, I am confident that the bonds we've formed here will stay with us for years to come. Thank you all for making Chan Sui Kau Hall a place to call home.

MESSAGE FROM RESIDENCE MASTER

Time flies. This is my sixth year of service as the Residence Master of Hall 5. I greatly cherish those opportunities (including challenging moments during social arrest and COVID) which had testified to our strengths, given our very best in working together with many colleagues across disciplines, for our students, and am grateful for the privilege to witness their talents, growth and successes, and cultivating teamwork spirit together.

I enjoy working with our residents, floor representatives, our Resident Tutors, SRO colleagues, and all the Residence Masters supporting each other for the growth and development of our student residence. I truly hope we will continue to foster the foundation we have laid down. For Hall 5, specifically in achieving our hall ABC motto 'Affection, Bonding and Care'.

All these aspects in CSK Hall help our residents to take every opportunity to benefit from, and enjoy their university education to its fullest. Always, with my very best wishes.

Having spent three years in hall five as a resident and as a resident tutor, the hall represents an important part of life to me. The experience of living in this hall has had a very strong effect on my life journey, and my development as a person. It was truly amazing to not only be able to experience the positivity, sharing, and bonding in hall five, but also hopefully to help others achieve the same feeling of belonging to our amazing community. It's like my second home - I have been working in Hall 5 since May 2004, and I really enjoyed working here. Hall 5 is like a big family, and the residents are like my children.

Favourite thing about Hall 5?

Everything! It's hard to find the best thing about Hall 5 since it's so great - we have the best view of Hong Kong, an amazing resident community, and a really good hall environment.

The community of this hall is great. I remember throughout the years, residents would usually want to be very friendly and would frequently chat with me. International students would also often want to learn and practice Cantonese - and I could also learn some new English words with them. It was always a great experience.

MESSAGE FROM HRC We are so grateful for the opportunity to serve and work alongside all of you this year. Being part of this team has allowed us to grow as individuals and strengthened our teamwork skills. We learned to communicate effectively, collaborate efficiently, and navigate challenges together.

But it wasn't all work and no play. Some of our fondest memories were spent organizing activities and events for all of us to enjoy. Be it the Christmas event or floor decoration, we loved seeing everyone come together and have a great time. We cherish the moments we shared and the bonds we formed with every one of you.

ATHLETIC MEETING

The Professor Edmond Ko Cup (PEK Cup) is a trademark event series jointly organized by the Student Residence Office (SRO). The athletic meet, which was held on the Joint Sports Centre was enjoyed by not only the runners but also by the spectators. The event consisted of 4 x 100 m relay and 4 x 400 m relay.

Hall 5's relay team consisted of 4 female and 4 male runners. We all did amazing and we had a lot of fun.

Overall, the PEK Athletic Meeting has been a great success. This competition surely has inspired people to take up running and lead a more active lifestyle.

This year's PEK Crate Climbing competition has certainly highlighted our hall's competitive spirit, where they put on an impressive display of teamwork and athleticism. Our team brought their A-game, each member scaling the crates with agility and unwavering determination. Throughout the competition, Hall 5's team spirit was infectious as they cheered the team on, providing constant encouragement and support. Overall, it was a great opportunity for everyone to bond and come together as a community.

As a signature event series, the PEK Cup features interhall competitions. These scores determine the overall champion of the Cup, making it an exciting competition for all involved.

PEK FOOTBALL FEMALE PEK Football Female is one of the events in the PEK Cup, and it is exclusively for female participants. This football penalty kick game, held on March 15th, 2023, provides an exciting opportunity for female residents of Hall 5 to showcase their skills and earn points for their hall.

As a highly competitive event, each hall fields their best players to represent them. In Hall 5, the players display their skills, speed, and agility, while also promoting sportsmanship, teamwork, and physical fitness. The event fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among the female residents of Hall 5, and it provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the hall's team spirit.

PEK Football Male is an inter-hall men's soccer competition that spans across four dates - February 22nd, March 1st, March 8th, and culminating in the finals on 15 March 2023.

Throughout the competition, the team showed great teamwork, coordination, and communication, which were critical factors in their performance on the field. The players demonstrated their ability to work together and support each other, regardless of the outcome of the game.

The team members were also thrilled with their performance in the competition. They were grateful for the opportunity to represent their hall and showcase their skills on the field. They acknowledged the support they received from their fellow hall residents, who cheered them on throughout the tournament.

14 / 04 / 2023 This year's PEK Table Tennis Competition was truly a battle of skills, strategy, and sportsmanship. Despite having the focus be on having fun and making the most out of our time, the team managed to secure the 1st Runner Up position.

Undoubtedly, our hall faced challenging opponents, but our players were not deterred and played with great enthusiasm and determination.

The team had a wonderful time meeting residents from other halls, and everyone walked away not only with a victory, but with lasting and valuable friendships as well.

Hall 5's Women's basketball team finished second in the dorm women's basketball game on February 16, 2023! Our women's basketball team showed excellent skills and excellent teamwork in the game. They supported each other on the court, cooperated tacitly, and won the honor of our dormitory with their own sweat and hard work.

Thank you for the spirit and performance of the women's basketball team in the game. Their hard work and dedication have brought honor and happiness to our dormitory. Also, thanks to all the cheerleaders who cheered on and supported the team, making our dorm a true team.

Our Hall 5 dormitory team performed well in the men's basketball game and finally won the 3rd runner-up! This is an exciting and celebratory time, and we are proud and proud of them.

Our team showed excellent skills and tacit cooperation during the game.

They supported each other on the field and won the honor for Hall 5 with their own sweat and hard work. Although they failed to win the championship, their spirit and performance surpassed the game's results and won the admiration and praise of all of us.

PEK SINGING CONTEST

Hall 5's participation in the PEK Singing Contest was marked by the outstanding performance of Patricia Vianney and Karan Singh Biswakarma, who presented a stunning rendition of "Shallow" by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. The duo's performance earned them the first runner-up position in the competition, showcasing the exceptional musical talent within Hall 5. Additionally, Lee Chun Hei also delivered an impressive solo performance. The event was held at Wong Cheung Lo Hui Yuet Hall, and was filled with enthusiastic supporters from all the halls. Overall, the PEK Singing Contest was a huge success, and Hall 5's achievement in this contest was welldeserved, reflecting their hard work and dedication to music.

Winter solstice is an important traditional festival in Chinese culture. Our residence tutors Jimmy and Jenny organized a winter solstice event in Hall 5. During the event, we enjoyed ginger biscuits and Tang Yuan, a traditional food commonly eaten during the winter solstice.

We all felt grateful for the opportunity to learn more about this important festival and to enjoy traditional foods together. It was a festive and joyous atmosphere, with everyone sharing stories and memories about the winter solstice.

The warm and comforting taste of the Tang Yuan, made us feel connected to my cultural roots.

It's that time of year again, and the decoration team of hall 5 has gone all out in making sure that everyone who enters feels the holiday spirit. The team has put in a lot of effort to create a festive atmosphere that will make everyone feel welcome and happy during the Christmas season. The cute white snowman greets everyone with a smile. The Christmas tree, adorned with colorful ornaments is the centerpiece of the lobby, is a popular spot for taking photos. Beautiful decorations above the lift adding to the joy and cheer of the season. The Christmas decoration in hall 5 is a true sight to behold, and anyone who walks into the lobby during this season can't help but feel the magic of Christmas.

The Christmas event was a highly anticipated occasion that brought together the hall mates. The Christmas event featured exciting gift exchange and Kahoot activities. The gift exchange allowed us to exchange presents with our friends and spread some holiday cheer.

After the games and gift exchange, there were lots of delicious things to eat like pizza, cookies, drinks, and snacks that tasted amazing. The event brought us all closer together and made us feel excited about the holiday season.

Chinese New Year is is one of the most important holidays in the Chinese calendar, and it is celebrated by millions of people around the world. One of the traditional activities during this time is the writing of couplets, which are verses that express good wishes for the upcoming year. Phrases like " " which means "may you have a prosperous new year" are written. This year, HRC had organized an event where the residents can write their own couplets and hang them on their door.

It was a fun activity and we can honor the rich cultural heritage of this important holiday.

Social Impact Challenges: Journey to go beyond together with Hall 3

On 30th September 2022, the scholarship team of Chan Sui Kau Hall, together with Alumni Civility Hall (Hall 3), organized the first YSP seminar in this academic year, under the title: "Social Impact Challenges: Journey to go beyond". Guest speakers for this seminar were Dr. Kong Ka Wai and Dr. Florence Chan, leaders of a successful startup AI Guided Guided.. Throughout the talk, they thoroughly described the path from finishing their PhDs at CityU to founding a thriving company, verified by numerous awards, some of which are Innovation Award (Tertiary Group) of City I&T Grand Challenge, Top 8 of Hong Kong & Macau Pitch of She Loves Tech 2022, Top 150 of Xpitch 2022 from 4000+ startups in the world. The thing which most stood out to me was their resilience in the face of disbelief which came from their young subordinates. Although their business model and leadership were questioned at first, they managed to prove the worth of their idea and gain trust of the employees.

Music: A Therapy in our lives

On October 28th, The Youth Society Project of the Chan Sui Kau Hall organised the second Seminar, YSP "Music: A Therapy in our Lives", for the academic year 2022-23. The seminar was led and organised by one of the most respectable Music therapists in Hong Kong, Ms Chan Ka Hei (Cynthia). She is a registered music therapist from the University of Melbourne who aimed to explain the benefits of music to the young adults of this generation and experience the clinical use of music to accomplish individualised goals such as reducing stress, improving mood and self-expression, known as ‘Music Therapy”.

As the semester comes to a close, stress levels are on the rise, and students are feeling the pressure of upcoming deadlines and exams. Chan Sui Kau Hall (Hall 5) is taking steps to alleviate this pressure by organizing a Youth and Society Project event aimed at promoting self-care and mental well-being.

The seminar was led by Louis Stephen Hardy, a Youth Services Officer from the Mental Health & Wellbeing Team of Coolminds. The seminar that was held via Zoom, provided attendees with insights on how to manage their stress levels while maintaining a consistent performance. Students who attended the seminar were enthusiastic, asked thoughtprovoking questions and took notes as the speaker shared his insights. During the seminar, Louis Stephen Hardy discussed the importance of creating a balance between work and personal life to avoid burnout. He emphasized the need for setting realistic goals, prioritizing tasks, and taking breaks to refresh the mind. Hardy also highlighted the importance of maintaining social connections and seeking help when necessary. Through this seminar, the students got the opportunity to learn from an expert in the field and left with a better understanding of how to manage their stress levels effectively.

Chan Sui Kau Hall (Hall 5) organized a mindfulness workshop as part of their Youth and Society Project. This Mindfulness Workshop was aimed at promoting mental well-being and self-care among students.

The workshop was held at Multifunction Hall B. The event was conducted by Heinok Fan, a certified mindfulness guru.

During the workshop, students were introduced to various mindfulness techniques that were aimed at helping students achieve a positive state of mind and improve their overall wellbeing.

The students who attended the workshop were enthusiastic and actively participated in the activities. They were taught how to focus on their breathing which helped them relax and de-stress. The participants also learned how to let go of negative thoughts and emotions, alleviate stress, and restore their energy.

Overall, the mindfulness workshop was a huge success, and the participants left the event feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. The event provided a much-needed break for students from the stress of academic life, and taught them valuable techniques that they could use in their daily lives to promote their mental well-being and self-care.

Alcoholism: The Rough Road Chan Sui Kau Hall organized the fourth YSP seminar in this academic year, under the name “Alcoholism the rough road". Guest speaker for this seminar was Ms. Jamie Vitto. Jamie Vitto is a Programme Coordinator at KELY Support Group and has facilitated workshops to empower youth and help them reach their full potential. She had conducted a physical workshop and seminar regarding First aid training for Alcoholism. This helped students better understand what are the first signs of a person falling into the trap of the rough road. It also helped students better understand how to avoid becoming an alcoholic and its side effects and how to recover from this rough path.

ONLINE DATING: REAL OR FAKE?

The Youth and Society Project of Hall 5 held a workshop that explored the topic of love and romantic relationships. Titled "Online Dating: Real or Fake?", the workshop was aimed at addressing common concerns in romantic relationships and offer insights into building intimacy in relationships.

The workshop was held on March 3, 2023, in MFH-C and was led by Dr. Lai Chuk Ling Julian, a university professor in the Faculty of Psychology at the City University of Hong Kong. Dr. Lai is an expert in psychology and has conducted research on topics related to personality and social psychology, health psychology, and environmental psychology.

Dr. Lai provided insights into the psychological factors that contribute to the development of intimacy. Participants were encouraged to reflect on their own experiences and consider how they could apply the insights gained from the workshop to their own relationships.

The workshop was attended by a diverse group of students from Chan Sui Kau Hall, with a mix of genders and nationalities represented. The workshop was highly interactive, with participants actively participating in discussions and sharing their opinions through menti.com.

Overall, the workshop was a valuable opportunity for students to gain insights into the world of online dating and learn about the building of intimacy in relationships. We hope that participants will continue to apply the insights gained from the workshop to their own lives and relationships.

Online Dating: Skills and Attitudes in Romantic Relationships The Youth and Society Project of Hall 5 successfully hosted another online dating seminar aimed to explore the impacts of using online dating apps among adolescents.

The event took place in MFH-C and was attended by a diverse group of students who were keen to learn more about online dating.

The speaker for the seminar was Mr. ISANGHA Stanley Oloji, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Throughout the seminar, Stanley shared his insights on the pros and cons of using online dating apps to initiate romantic relationships. He also engaged the attendees by asking for their opinions and thoughts on different cases related to online dating.

Stanley also talked about the potential risks associated with using online dating apps, including privacy concerns and negative impacts on mental health. He emphasized the importance of being careful when using these apps. However, he also acknowledged that it is okay to find a partner from online dating, as long as it is done with caution.

Overall, the seminar was a success and provided attendees with valuable insights into the world of online dating. The active participation of the students made the event lively and engaging, and the speaker's expertise and approach made the event informative and enlightening.

DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES

The Hall Residence Cabinet (HRC) is a self-initiated student organisation that is advised and supervised by the Residence Master (RM) in the relevant UG hall under Student Residence Office.

The HRC is made up of student leaders from various cultural backgrounds who are passionate about sharing ideas to improve a vibrant hall life for all residents.

Our HRC Cabinet, FiverNova, attended the HRC training, where they learned about the process of organising hall activities to enrich the hall life of residents and enhance cultural integration. They also learned the procedural works that they are accountable for. The event concluded with some teambuilding exercises.

This interactive display allowed us to share our words of inspiration with others, creating a sense of community and support. Through this event, we felt more motivated and encouraged to push through the final week of the semester, knowing that we are part of a caring and supportive community.

We really enjoyed this event!

The event of Final Week Encouragement was the first event held by HRC. The event included distributing chocolate, cookies, and beverages to our residents.

A small treat can go a long way in boosting morale and motivation during this busy and stressful time. In addition, sticky notes are provided to us. We wrote down motivational messages and posted them on our "moving board."

The Open Semester Party was a delightful gathering that brought together hall 5 students, professors, and former residence tutors. We were treated to amazing singing performances by our hall mates, which added to the festive atmosphere of the event.

The highlight of the evening was the mouth-watering spread of KFC fried chicken, mashed potato, PizzaHut and refreshing drinks. Towards the end of the event, there was a lucky draw that created an air of excitement and anticipation. The prizes were amazing, including an oven, a Bluetooth speaker, and a camera, among others.

THE PEAK HIKING

As we welcome the winter break, Hong Kong brings the perfect outdoor season. A hike to The Peak was organised and joined by our residents of Hall 5. The Hike began with everyone meeting at 10 AM and then taking the bus to the beginning of the trail from where the fun began. It was an easy 2-hour hike which included sightseeing the breathtaking view of the Hong Kong Skyline and the Historic Peak Tram. The residents were also joined by RTs which led to a much greater bond between everyone.
