outhern charm… a catchphrase coined to describe the timeless beauty and character of homes in the South.

From sprawling mansions to cozy bungalows, Southern homes are layered with textiles both old and new. Family heirlooms find happy companions in modern decor touches, creating spaces that are both historic and fresh. Antiques, crystal, china, silver, and florals—lots of florals! And, of course, patterns and bold colors.

As a young girl, I recall my mother turning our modest house into a cozy, darling charmer. Raising five children alone, she made the best of what she had. We never knew we were poor. She repurposed old things and added fresh, handmade touches to our home. It was her superpower—making silk purses from sow’s ears. She loved antiques and anything old, including people with rich histories of their own.

As years passed, so did my beloved mom. But she instilled in me a true love for old things. One of my favorite pastimes is thrifting for hidden treasures.

Each year, as I grow older, my love for vintage deepens. I imagine the history and backstories behind each piece I incorporate into my home.

charming Floridian and Georgian resale shops. Just a stone’s throw away in Pooler, Georgia, our daughter Christie, her husband Tyler, and their two children, Kennedi and Rhett, live in an heirloom home once owned by Tyler’s grandparents.

Christie’s love for vintage decor has been passed down, too. When she and Tyler purchased their home, it needed a lot of TLC. As the renovations progressed, I enjoyed watching the transformation. They kept the integrity and character of the older home. Many floors had to be replaced, but instead of opting for brandnew, they salvaged what they could and retained the 1940s charm. It is the sweetest Southern-style home nestled in old Pooler.

Back in 2004, my husband and I purchased a small parcel of land in North Florida and, with the help of our children, built the home we currently live in. It’s a great house, but more than that, it’s a great home. We never intended to stay. It was supposed to be an investment property, but we poured so much into it—blood, sweat, and tears. We listed it for sale a few times, but I just couldn’t bring myself to leave.

Keep it Thrifty to Hone Your Personal Style

I love the coziness of winter’s early nights, but I’m itching to bring out spring colors and patterns again. Over the years, I’ve thrifted numerous sets of dishes, crystal, and china. Instead of storing them away, I display and use them seasonally.

One fun tradition I started is decorating my china cabinets and curios according to the season.

Many millennials are returning to “Grandma’s style” and swooping up treasures from thrift stores. It warms my heart to see young people embracing old pieces. Remember when brides had china registries? I hope that tradition makes a comeback.

Homemaking is an art that’s been lost for years but is now resurging. The farmhouse trend brought a renewed interest in chickens, gardens, sourdough bread, and DIY projects. I see my grandkids and daughters embracing these traditions. They love thrifting and treasure hunting. My mom would be so proud. ■

Decorating your home should be fun and organically inspired from your heart. There is too much time nowadays spent fawning over the aesthetics of "social media worthy" homes and spaces, and in my opinion, we've lost something so unique along the way—our own taste. Your home should be just that— "Your home, with your taste."

Back "in the day" before social media, we foraged for what we loved...We gathered things from past and present to create a curated home, abundant with color, texture and aesthetic appeal.

We searched magazines, department stores, our favorite aunts and Grandmother's homes. Thrifting wasn't as "cool " as it is today.

With the surge of minimalism and an all neutral pallet, thrift and consignment stores are busting at the seams with all the "things" we are now falling in love with again. China is making a big comeback here in the south—people are thinking in terms of china patterns again! Wall paper is back too!

If I had to give you one word of decor advise, it would be to go by your local thrift and antique stores once or twice a week. Here's how I do it: I grab a buggy (I usually always end up with the one that pulls to one side and has a squeaky wheel) I scan everything as I am walking past making my way to the china, crystal, and home goods. Here in the South, no home is fully complete with out a proper plate wall, so if you see a plate you love, throw it in the buggy. In fact, do this with every item you find that's a possibility. You will sort through it all later before checkout and discard what you don't want to purchase. Trust me, there will inevitably be someone there with the same intentions you have, so grab what you love, sort and discard (or not) later.

The secondhand stores are overflowing with Grandma's stuff. It gives me great joy to re-purpose these once loved items and bring new life to my own home. No southern home should be without a china cabinet either, or two or even three in my case—I have one for thrifted crystal, one for my Mother's beloved china and one I decorate seasonally. You can find these everywhere for penny's on the dollar. I am not saying my southern taste is for everyone, but there are things that can be added to a home that will bring warmth, personality, charm and a feeling of nostalgia.

In terms of color, I jumped on the all neutral bandwagon when it first hit social medial. This is why I can wholeheartedly say, "do your own thing!"

I threw away, gave away and upcycled so many things I wish I had back.

If I had it to do over again, I would probably do the same thing though.

It allowed me to explore my own style personality. And I was able to give things to others and that in and of itself is a blessing to my heart.

So get out there, grab a coffee and a best friend and hit the antique stores, thrift and consignment shops. You may or may not come home with a bounty, but your heart will be full. It's alot like a treasure hunt of sorts—so much fun! Often I go with items in mind, but usually, I go for the relaxation of it. Enjoy! www.PoolerMagazine.com | May/June 2025

It’s unbrushed hair (ours and theirs), kids barefoot in the yard, sticky with popsicle residue, while you sip another cup of lukewarm coffee, praying it gets you through the chaos.

Forget Pinterest perfection. Our lives are a mash-up of survival instincts, mismatched socks, and a touch of desperation.

Here’s the thing: that’s okay. More than okay. It’s normal. Most days, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

In some imaginary world (probably Instagram), moms wake up at 5 a.m. for yoga, pour artisanal coffee, and serve photo-worthy pancakes with a smile.

Meanwhile, my kids are arguing over who breathed on whom while I’m reminding everyone to put on pants before school.

Breakfast at my house? Less “homey farmhouse aesthetic,” more “wildlife documentary.” The youngest eats waffles upside down on the couch. The middle child is running a spoon-based taste test. The teen’s eating chips because “they’re basically potatoes, Mom.” I’m in the car line yelling, “WHERE IS YOUR BACKPACK?” while avoiding eye contact with the teacher trying to chat before my caffeine hits.

And let’s talk about the most universal symbol of mom life: lukewarm coffee. It starts hot and hopeful. But somewhere between packing lunches, finding shoes, and shouting homework reminders, it sits forgotten.

Eventually, you take a sip and instantly regret it. That once-steaming ambition is now a sad puddle of caffeine.

And yet, we drink it. Because it’s not about the temperature—it’s the ritual.

No matter how many parenting books or blogs you consume, kids are gonna be kids. By that, I mean semi-feral beings.

Toddlers are cute-feral, running naked in the yard, hoarding rocks like currency, yelling “I DO IT MYSELF!” before spilling an entire gallon of milk.

Elementary-aged kids? Slightly more advanced feral. Climbing trees, building forts from couch cushions, arguing that playing Roblox counts as socializing.

Teenagers? Their feral energy is emotional. Glued to their phones, texting in hieroglyphics, eating everything except the food you made. They’re not technically feral anymore, but they still look at you like you’re speaking a foreign language when you ask them to clean their room. Or worse—when you’re teaching them to drive and they’re convinced they’re ready for the Daytona 500.

The mom life aesthetic isn’t just lukewarm coffee and feral kids—it’s a vibe. Leggings with questionable stains?

Check. Messy bun? Double check. We’re not making a fashion statement; we’re surviving.

There’s power in the messy bun.

Confidence in mismatched socks—hey, at least you found socks. And the universal mom accessory? Under-eye bags. We wear them like battle scars.

Here’s the truth: feral kids and lukewarm coffee mean you’re doing it right. Spotless kitchens don’t tell the story of a life lived. Sticky handprints, laundry mountains, floors covered in mystery crumbs and glitter? That’s the real mom life aesthetic.

It’s easy to feel like you’re failing when social media shows highlight reels. But

no one’s posting when their toddler colored on the dog with a Sharpie® or their teen skipped deodorant for a week because “it’s a free country.”

It’s not picture perfect. It’s beautifully imperfect. A little bit feral, a little bit sticky, and a whole lot of love.

The beauty of mom life is in the chaos.

The definition of the term hidden gem is Noble Roots. This casually elegant spot sits on the corner of a row of shops in Godley Station. The atmosphere is streamlined yet posh, with soft earth tones creating a relaxing experience, complemented by local art for all to enjoy.

No flight necessary—step into this pub, and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to England. The large oval-shaped mahogany bar serves as the centerpiece. If you want the inside scoop on a new place, sit at the bar and let the staff school you on menu choices.

The owner and chef have a history of great food. Noble Roots delivers a true farm-to-table experience, sourcing everything directly from local farms and markets to ensure the highest quality while supporting the local community.

I was torn on what to order but settled on a meat pie— known here in the States as a pot pie. The English do it right, and this dish was delicious, with magical British seasonings.

As we dined, the owner offered a taste of something the chef was creating for future menu specials. Whether you’re there for a quick bite like their prime burger, a starter such as the amazing alligator bites, or a full meal featuring steak, seafood, or New Orleans-style pasta, the options are bountiful.

I sat next to a gentleman from the UK who said his fish and chips were “spot on—just like home.”

Noble Roots offers a wine-tasting experience like no other in the area. Picture walking into a wine cellar and sampling multiple wines at your leisure. Noble Roots provides this ambiance with a unique corner in the restaurant showcasing a wine dispenser with about two dozen options. You’ll receive a “wine credit card” to insert into the climate-controlled dispenser, allowing you to choose your portion size. At the end of your meal, your selections are added to your tab.

In addition to this, Noble Roots boasts a full bar with artistic and creative craft cocktails. The bartenders consistently create something “fun” in a glass for patrons to enjoy.

MISS SOPHIE’S 175 Bourne Ave, Pooler Tucked away inside the Mighty Eighth Museum, Miss Sophie’s is a hot spot for home-cooked meals. Every day, a buffet line features four vegetable sides and two to three starches to accompany the day’s entrees. The weekly menu includes: • Tuesdays: Fried pork chops or meatloaf • Wednesdays: Fried chicken or pot roast • Thursdays: Fried chicken or country-fried steak with gravy • Fridays: Baked or fried fish, twice-baked potatoes, and chicken tenders

The food here is fabulous, from the classic fish and chips to bangers and mash. Chef Edward, the owner, has created a well-rounded menu. The burgers are some of the best in the area, with multiple topping options and served with rosemary lemon fries—a unique touch.

The menu features an eclectic mix, from English pub favorites to offerings like Indian tandoori with naan or Italian-inspired lasagna, available in meat or vegetarian styles.

The bar itself is a sight to behold, and the cocktails are equally impressive. Try the Faulty Towers cocktail, made with house-made basil cucumber vodka, a splash of orange liqueur, and a lime finish. Of course, an English pub wouldn’t be complete without ales. With a dozen or so choices, you can’t go wrong. Whether you prefer an English Chocolate Stout, German Hefe-Weizen, or Irish Red Ale, there’s something for everyone. Don’t forget to try a flight!

STIR COFFEE SHOP 505 US-80 West, Suite A, Pooler Stir Coffee Shop is a convenient spot for coffee, a light breakfast, or lunch. While it may be tricky to find— especially for newcomers—it’s worth the effort. (Use GPS to locate it.)

Nestled in a corrugated industrial building with other businesses, including a church, this shop offers a cozy atmosphere. Inside, you’ll find multiple nooks and crannies perfect for private conversations or group meetings by the room-long gas fireplace.

The food is authentic and comforting, and it’s clear from the clientele that this place feels like home. Many military personnel in their fatigues join the line, reminiscing about family meals.

Stir is an excellent spot for remote work, complete with plenty of outlets for your laptop. The coffee stands out on its own, but there are countless ways to elevate your drink. The staff is exceptional, helping you craft the perfect cup.

In addition to the buffet, Miss Sophie’s offers a menu with salads, sandwiches, burgers, and hot dogs, including the famous meatloaf and gravy sandwich.

Their pastry chef creates delectable sweet treats, including occasional gluten-free muffins and cookies. The shop also features a small merchandise area with items such as jewelry, mugs, artwork, and coffee beans.

Miss Sophie’s is straightforward and no-frills, but you get more than your money’s worth. And yes, seconds are allowed. Get there early, as the dishes are prepared fresh daily and sell out quickly.

THE GEORGIA HI-LO TRAIL Building America's Longest Paved Trail to Empower Rural Georgia Story by Cindy Reid

hat if you could actually ride your bike or walk from one side of Georgia to the other on a smooth paved trail that went through charming Southern towns with ample opportunity to learn local history, enjoy a meal or even spend the night?

That describes the Georgia Hi-Lo Trail, a work in progress that will ultimately be a 211 mile paved path from Athens to Savannah that winds through East Central Georgia.

The Hi-Lo Trail will be much more than a nature or bike trail because it is driven by the urge to connect communities to the users of the trail.

Some of it will be nature, some will be small town, and some will be more urban.

Stretching from Sparta, to Tybee Beach, everything that makes Georgia unique will be incorporated into the trail. Think old train depots, shops and restaurants, small town murals and stately courthouses.

Because the Trail will be paved it can be used by runners, strollers, wheelchairs users, bicycles, rollerbladers, leashed dogs, and walkers of all ages. That is the essence of the Hi-Lo Trail, the community spirit of having something literally everyone can use. Creating America’s longest paved trail will of course take time. But the work has started.

The Visionary Executive Director Mary Charles Howard is the visionary. Born and raised in the small town Sandersville, Ga., she left to pursue higher education and a professional career as a landscape architect. Eventually she returned to her hometown with her family.

“We were back home but we had left trails behind and had nowhere to walk or bike,” Mary says.

Furthermore, she saw that other families were returning to their hometowns, and new residents were discovering the beautiful homes that could be had for a much lower price than in an urban or suburban area. She thought they too could benefit from a walking or bike trail.

“With the advent of remote work, I saw a return to small towns, and I thought that bringing some benefits of urban life, such as a paved trail, to a rural setting could possibly revitalize these rural communities.”

Incorprating Communities with the Trail The trail she was designing would wind through towns along the way where visitors would experience local points of interest and spend money at restaurants and shops. It was important to her that

visitors and residents interact and share their stories. Mary was clear that the trail needed to be paved to make it accessible for everyone.

“I envisioned multi-generational users, grandparents, parents, kids and special needs folks, who often face barriers accessing the outdoors.”

She launched the project in 2019 with the thought that she could do it herself. “I had focused on trail design as a landscape architect, but I soon saw the complexity and scope of the project would require a team, ideally one with experience.”

Enter the PATH Foundation.

The PATH Foundation “All roads led to the PATH Foundation,” says Mary, “They have helped other trail organizations, and they have figured it out.”

PATH, a nonprofit based in Atlanta, started with trail systems in Atlanta and have since worked with other communities to create such stellar trails as the Swamp Rabbit trail out of Greenville, SC, and the Spanish Moss Trail in Beaufort, SC. Mary says, “We have been working together since 2019. They designed our Master Plan, including signage and benches, with nothing left to chance.

Without them I might have given up.”

With the support of PATH Mary has been able to use her time to promote the Trail, visiting local community organizations such as Rotary Clubs and lobbying in Atlanta, as well as actual trail building.

PATH has learned that persistence and patience are the virtues most needed during long-distance trail planning and that with them big things can happen.

The Georgia Hi-Lo Trail and its constituent cities and counties are fortunate to have inspiring leaders, competent staff, and dedicated community volunteers who can keep the vision focused and do the necessary hard 36

work It will require the Georgia Hi-Lo Initiative’s Board and all of its staff to focus their efforts today and over many years to come.

Kids Bike League Looking to inspire the next generation of cyclists and adventurers, Mary initiated a new program, Kids Bike League. The Trail effort was launched in April 2019 and the bike league in May 2019.

“We had a lot of bikes, and the initial premise was to teach kids how to ride but most of the kids who came already knew how to ride so we focused on providing safe riding trails and helmets that they can bring home.”

The free-of-charge ride days also provide nutritious meals and snacks for the kids. The program offers Free Community Ride Days in Sandersonville and Guyton, Effingham County, which are made possible by a grant from the Chestnut Family Foundation.

“It’s a great time on bikes, plus snacks, crafts, and adventure with friends,” says Mary.

There is also a series of Summer Camp weeks which have a fee, although scholarships are available. Registration is required for both Ride Days and Summer Camp.

The Trail Mary says, “We have two sections of old rail we will be using but most of the land needed is a mixture of public and private owners.”

She says it will take time to build relationships to facilitate commitments from local landowners although some are already on board, such as a 2.2-mile segment on an easement generously donated by Forest Grove Preserve, a Georgia Centennial Farm and National Register of Historic Places site. While the trail is still on private property and not yet open to the public, Forest Grove Preserve recently hosted the Sandersville Kids Bike League.

The Master Plan lays the trail out across eight counties and by 2030 they will have built “model miles” in Effingham, Washington and Hancock Counties.

“Those three sections of model miles keep me very busy,” says Mary. “Ideally, we want each county to ‘feel the love’ as we continue to build on each section.”

Trail building has commenced on the Sandersville to Tennille model mile and at the Forest Grove Preserve.

The Trail will not be a straight line as it is designed to “bend” to highlight local

points of interest such as the Effingham ball fields, as well as connect to restrooms.

Mary says she wants residents to know, “The Georgia Hi-Lo Trail is connecting rural Georgia communities with a world-class trail while creating economic opportunities and outdoor adventures for all. If people can see the entire project, they will see it’s not about the trail, it's about the community and it’s about seeing each other.
