ell here we are....2019 has arrived!

Each year at this time, we all start thinking of the things we plan to do different in the new year...new resolutions, new goals, new plans for our professional life as well as personal.

This new year brings many of these to mind for me. One of my main goals in 2019 is to find a way to give myself more time. Now, last time I checked, there is never going to be an increase to our 24 hours in a day. Nope...just not gonna happen. I sometimes find myself looking at the clock and wondering where all the time has gone....it is a very precious commodity that we all need more of.

Julie Hales, PUBLISHER As some of you may know, I have recently gotten a “new job.” Unfortunately, my mother has had a very harsh year. She has been very ill and has been hospitalized for over half of 2018. About five months ago, I had to move my mother in with me. So, now I can add caretaker to my resume. It’s a fascinating job...one that requires patience and understanding....and a huge amount of love!

With my new “position,” I have found that time is a bit more valuable to me than before. And, it is something that I run out of frequently. There are days when I wish I could run to the store and buy some more of it, but we all know that is wishful thinking.

Please don’t get me wrong. I value the relationship I have with my mother. And, I am happy to be there for her and with her. She has always been there for me...I am just returning the favor.

Time is my only issue...and I plan to make changes in 2019 to allow myself more time for the important things in life...my family and my dear friends.

My advice to you......do the same. Make 2019 a little more special to the ones you love!

phelia Rodriguez’s mother died very young at 51 years of age from complications of Multiple Sclerosis. Her father at 83, from complications of Alzheimer's and Lung Cancer. Her brother, who was closest in age to her, died on Rodriguez’ 50th birthday in June of 2018.

Rodriguez herself would not escape the apparent family traits of medical malaise.

She was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma Breast Cancer in October of 2018. She had surgery the same month to remove the cancer and is currently receiving radiation treatment, and is due to have reconstruction surgery upon completion and healing from radiation.

Life is not what Rodriguez thought it was before her diagnosis. “I now know that it can change in an instant, and that I need to focus more on enjoying it and less on making plans,” she explains. Some of her future plans are no longer due to the diagnosis, and Rodriguez acknowledges that that’s okay. “In the face of illness I’ve learned to let go, live, and be happy. My goal for today – to help someone in need, to put a smile on the face of someone sitting in the room with me waiting to have treatment.”

The youngest of seven siblings, Rodriguez remembers growing up in a very tight knit household; her father the owner of a very successful trucking company and also very philanthropic in the Rodriguez’ community, supporting many less

fortunate people whom he met along his daily ventures. Both Rodriguez’ parents also had a passion for children in need.

Born in Jersey City, a young Rodriguez would move to North Carolina as child as a result of her father’s business, where she lived there until the age of 17. All of her siblings graduated from high school and went to college. But not Rodriguez. “Me….I graduated early and joined the Army.”

She was 16 and in the reserves before going active duty. Naturally, her parents were totally against this “not the norm” for the family, she reminisces, but they both gave consent, and off she went. “I was determined to prove to my father that women did belong in the military, and that he and mom gave me all of the strength and smarts to survive such a challenging adventure, at such a very young age,” Rodriguez continues.

One of Rodriguez’ very close older cousins was the catalyst for the military decision. Her cousin had joined the Navy and would send a young 16-year-old Rodriguez letters and pictures about all of her ventures. “I knew that this was something that I wanted to do, all while helping to make the world a better place,” Rodriguez explains. Like her parents, she too had a passion for helping the less fortunate, but wanted to help those who were in places that didn’t have formal resource systems in place. “The Army was tough, but I felt as if I were tougher,” she says with a smile.

A toughness she definitely showed as she transitioned through the ranks to becoming a drill sergeant. “It was a position of which I’ve always respected,” Rodriguez adds, noting the criteria of being fit, disciplined and stern. “I’d been that all of my life, so this seemed as if it were another challenge calling my name.”

Not to mention she “loved the wool headgear (hat) worn while in this position.

It garnered much respect, as not everyone makes it through the course, or endured their entire tour, which was two years…. many, many years ago!”

Her career path would change after the military. She considers fundraising her second career, and the military her first.

After the military she held positions in development and foundation departments at two universities, the Department of Defense, and was also a government contractor. Fundraising, community outreach, and events sort of “fell in her lap” as Rodriguez’ first civilian job after the military. “Luckily I enjoyed it!” she laughs.

In 2008, she started at Hospice Savannah and has held three positions in the foundation. A very revered organization in the community that provides care to patients and their families during the most critical time in life; death. Because Hospice Savannah is a nonprofit organization, all funds that support the organization and the non-medical treatment of patients, their families, and the community at large, are

raised via donors, events, will bequests, and Rodriguez’ very favorite… the Hospice Savannah Thrift Shoppe on Hwy 80 in Pooler.

The shop opened in April 2016 and is supported with donations from the community, families of those whom Hospice Savannah has provided care for, as well as some local retailers. “It gives me energy and reassurance every time I walk through the doors,” Rodriguez explains.

“It shows me that hospice care is necessary and appreciated.”

Hospice is something Rodriguez takes very personally as her mother was under hospice care in North Carolina when she was a youngster. When others were out being teenagers, Rodriguez and her family had clinical hospice staff in and out of their home to care for her mother. Rodriguez’ father was also cared for by hospice in North Carolina for a short while before he died, and her brother passed while under hospice care in June. “My siblings and I were introduced to hospice care at very young ages, and are full aware of the quality care that they provide,” Rodriguez explains. “Hospice allowed my father to continue to run his business, and for my siblings and I to have as normal lives as possible during my mother’s very ill times.

They were there to care for her and do

things that we couldn’t.”

Rodriguez would get to Hospice Savannah after a government contract landed her in Savannah in 2007. “I had a few other choices, but I took Savannah,” she explains, wanting to be close to her family in North Carolina. But after 9 months she opted to resign her position as a contractor, soon after working for a major factory in the area that had been awarded a large military contract for making vehicles to be used in the middle east. The factory however, had a massive layoff, and Rodriguez found herself in the bunch, a “last hired, first fired” type of deal. She stayed home a few months to enjoy the summer with her now 26-yearold son, and then went on a purposeful job search.

“I needed something that I enjoyed, that was helpful to the community in which I resided, and didn’t keep me ball and chained to a desk or a building,” she says with a smile. “I came to Hospice Savannah via an employment placement agency.

Just as employers hire via placement agencies to determine that they get quality employees, I too needed to be sure that I was giving my time and experience to a worthy employer. I needed the right fit, and found it here.”

manages Hospice Savannah’s annual giving program, events and third party fundraisers. Add to that, the breast cancer diagnosis in October. “It changed me… and me includes my plans, my outlook, ideals and goals,” Rodriguez explains.

“It has increased my faith and certainly grew my relationship with God. It’s made me less rigid in terms of not needing to know everything, control everything, and trying to be everything for everybody,” she continues. “I’m even more compassionate for the less fortunate, especially those who are dealing with illnesses.” Her own, resulting in a partial mastectomy, and now radiation treatments. “I’m great actually!” Rodriguez says with amazing alacrity. Although she does admit to having her moments, especially when she hears stories of reoccurrence, when she feels the pain, or when she looks at her breasts in the mirror. “Quality of life is my goal, and so I focus on that the best I can.

Some days my big smile hides a lot of pain and uncertainty. But, I remind myself of healing, faith and God’s promise…just for me,” Rodriguez adds whilst closing her eyes.

Given so much history, it is no wonder Rodriguez is so passionate about sharing her story with others, especially women.

“Cancer is not the death sentence that it used to be,” she explains, noting medicine and treatments have changed much, and for the better. “To hear that word makes most shiver, and it did me too! I am a very fit woman, always have been. I thought that somehow this was a mistake, but it wasn’t.”

Rodriguez attributes her recovery to

her health and fitness regimen, and with a message of utmost importance. “I would encourage every woman to check your own breasts and get your mammograms!”

Rodriguez found her lump less than 90 days after a clean mammogram report. “Take care of yourself, eat healthy, incorporate some type of daily physical exercise or motion. It’s easier to fight when you’ve already conditioned your body for it. Lastly, take care of yourself mentally.

Stress can cause great harm to the body.”

Rodriguez has just one goal; to live.

According to research, her chances of the cancer never returning, while taking the cancer pill for the next five years is about 90%, although she spends a fair amount of time meditating and reminding herself that tomorrow is not promised. She still has big plans; to be totally debt free within the next two years, to physically gain more muscle as she is able, and to mentally stay in her daily meditations, read bible scriptures and try to apply them to her life.

“My mind and life have changed – all other goals are currently under construction,” she adds with a smile.

ort City Animal Hospital serves the Pooler, Savannah, Port Wentworth, Bloomingdale, and Effingham County areas and is owned and operated by Dr. Jeremy Faris. After completing his undergraduate studies at Virginia Tech, Dr. Faris graduated in 2012 from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine and began practicing in the Savannah area immediately following graduation. Dr. Faris hails from Warren, Rhode Island, but he and his wife, Janell, fell in love with the low country and now call this area home with their three beautiful children, Hazel, George, and Madeline.

Dr. Faris always loved being around animals of all types from a young age but had early dreams of playing baseball in the major leagues. Though playing catcher for the Braves would have been exciting, he decided to pursue his other field of dreams and become a veterinarian. He had always envisioned a place where families could not only find top quality care for their fourlegged family members, but also a place that would provide empathy, knowledge, and education to the families as well.

“I have always loved working with both people and pets, and I believe education is such a valuable component in animal health care,” explains Dr. Faris.

Where many veterinarians use a heating pad for their patients during surgeries to keep their core temperature from dropping, Dr. Faris has invested in a vet bed warmer specifically designed to regulate the pet’s core temperature in the safest manner possible. “We took the time when we built the facility to think about every step. assion is the driving force behind what many people do in their lives. It motivates them and helps them do things that truly mean something. If you are looking for an example of what passion can do in someone’s life, meet Jane Grismer, whose passion for serving has led her to do extraordinary things and positively impact the lives of so many people.

Always a New Yorker Jane was born and raised on Long Island, New York. She lived in Manhattan for several years before relocating to Savannah in 1998. In 2013, she moved to Pooler but admits that New York will always have a fond place in her heart. “I am a New Yorker. In a strange way, it feels like I never left even though Georgia feels like home as well. I return often during the year to visit my brothers, nieces and nephews and other family members,” says Jane.

In addition to her roots, Jane’s connection to New York will be indelibly stamped on her heart; September 11, 2001, is a day that changed the world, our country, her life and the lives of her family members. “I never really considered the concept of mortality at all until that day,” says Jane. 9/11 was definitely a Grismer family affair. Jane’s father was the general manager of building operations for the World Trade Center. Her older brother was a New York City (FDNY) firefighter and her younger brother was a New York City (NYPD) police officer. Her father had retired before that day; however, her brothers were part of the response teams.

“My older brother, Jimmy, actually traded shifts that day with his mutual partner and friend Tommy Hetzel. Tommy died that day. That could have been my brother. I never lose sight of that,” says Jane.

Jane admits that, like many Americans, even now she can’t wrap her head around what happened that tragic day. Her family lost many of their friends. “Loss seemed to be overwhelming and it lingered on and on,” Jane recalls. Then, two years later, her mother passed away from cancer. “I was broken. There was so much darkness and pain and I couldn’t see my way out,” admits Jane. Then, in 2007, although being a self-proclaimed “God skeptic,” Jane asked for His help and instantly felt protected, guided and surrounded by love.

From that moment, Jane dedicated her life to service. “Now I try to be of service to others and very little is about me alone,” says Jane.

Vowing to Never Forget As Jane entered a life of service, doors opened for her. Eight years ago, she was named race director of the Tunnel to Towers Savannah 5K Run & Walk. The event is an offshoot of the main event held each year in New York since 2002. The race was born to honor NYC Firefighter Stephen Siller. Stephen was one of 343 firefighters killed on 9/11. Jane knew Stephen and the two attended a small Catholic high school together in Rockville Centre, New York, on Long Island.

On September 11, Stephen had just finished his shift and was on his way to play golf with his brothers. As he was driving, he heard on the scanner that a plane struck one of the Twin Towers. He immediately turned his truck around and tried to drive through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, which was already closed. Instead of giving up, he strapped on 65 pounds of gear and ran through the tunnel to get to the towers. Stephen was 34 years old and had five young children when he was killed. “While he was seen as a hero that day, it was really who he was - doing the next right thing and helping others,” says Jane.

Stephen’s siblings came together and started the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Since its inception, approximately 60 national runs and stair climbs have been established in cities all over the United States and abroad. The Savannah run is one of the largest of these. In 2018, over 2,000 people participated and Jane says it’s amazing to see the willing support and patriotism that people in our community have.

A portion of the proceeds from the Savannah event benefits the 200 Club of the Coastal Empire. Other money goes to

programs such as building smart homes for catastrophically wounded military veterans. The 2018 race was a very special race because the Gold Star Program was established to provide mortgage-free homes to surviving spouses and children of military lost in combat. Savannah was fortunate to have a recipient this year, the widow of Sergeant 1st Class Christopher Celiz, an Army Ranger assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia.

“It was such a special moment. Stephen Siller’s brother Frank, the Foundation’s CEO, came down to present the house to Katie Celiz and their daughter at the event,” says Jane. “The Rangers also wanted to start the event and run the entire 5K route with Celiz’s daughter, Shannon. So, they pushed her in a stroller until they reached the finish line.” Jane is humbled to see how many people come together to do good for others.

As if that’s not special enough, each year, 343 children line Whitaker Street along Forsyth Park, each holding a placard of an NYC firefighter with their biography written on the back to represent the 343 lost heroes. “We call this amazing group TEAM 343 and not one of these kids was born before 9/11, so this is a great opportunity for them to learn about the impact of that day and it also exemplifies what ‘Never Forget’ really means,” adds Jane.

A Dedicated Commitment The planning, coordination and execution required to create this event

is a year-round commitment that Jane is completely dedicated to. “I have an exciting and challenging full-time position at the Holiday Inn & Suites in Pooler, which I give my all to. Amazingly the passion that I have for Tunnel to Towers also gives me the energy to make that happen as well.”

“Life and experience have taught me how to curate and align how I spend the precious time we’re all allowed on earth.

Doing what I’m fortunate to be able to do keeps me grounded and grateful every day.” She doesn’t work alone. “It’s a collaboration - without a great team, along with the tremendous partnership of WTOC-TV’s Tim Guidera and Savannah’s own Dick Eckburg, we would never have grown the way we have.”

She’s now on the Foundation’s

Leadership Team and collaborates with others who are starting similar runs.

“I get calls from race directors all over the country looking for mentorship and guidance. I want to make sure that all the lessons we’ve learned along the way are shared with other passionate volunteers who want to make Tunnel to Towers part of their community, too,” adds Jane.

Serving with Purpose Directing the Savannah run has led Jane to experience many incredible things.

She got to help ring the closing bell for the New York Stock Exchange on behalf of the Foundation and she has met amazing people - like Stephen Siller’s extended family, other race directors from around the world, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and other celebrities. Jane knows that remembering 9/11 is a shared experience for all Americans.

Her older brother Jimmy is now a captain with the New York Fire Department and her younger brother Rich, who retired due to health reasons from 9/11, still lives in New York. Her dad moved to Savannah and Jane makes Pooler her home with husband Nathan Dominitz, Savannah Morning News Sports Content Editor.

“Although my family was spared and others were not, we all share a similar sentiment of what 9/ 11 means and we can all agree to ‘Never Forget.’ By doing this, I’m playing a small part in helping to make that happen,” says Jane. A small part that has a tremendous impact.

The 2019 Tunnel to Towers Savannah event is in downtown Savannah on September 7 and the New York City 5K run takes place the last Sunday in September.

hat is the best way to alleviate all the “bureaucratic burdens forced on physicians” by insurance companies and, hence, get back to “putting patients first?” Dr. Heidi Braun, Medical Director of PhoenixDPC (Direct Primary Care), discovered the solution and has made some much needed “radical” changes in the way she practices medicine.

Born in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Braun was raised in Berlin, Germany from age four; she had long been fascinated with the field of medicine and the human body; Dr. Braun always cared about people, thinking that the biggest reward was being able to help others feel better and, in turn, enjoy a better quality of life.

“I’ve always liked people. I had a burning interest for how the body works, how to heal it and for medicine—the science behind it all,” Dr. Braun stated.

She married the love of her life, Oliver Braun, while in Germany. A certified tax accountant who later became a firefighter and EMT, Oliver is truly a versatile professional in his own right. The couple has a son Lucas, 16, and a daughter Sarah, 14.

While in Germany, Dr. Braun received her medical degree from Hannover Medical University. After traveling to America during medical school to do some medical rotations in San Antonio and Birmingham, she was immediately drawn to the medical culture in the United States.

Dr. Braun and Oliver relocated to the states and soon set their sights on Savannah, where she began her residency at Memorial University Medical Center in 2000. Upon completion in 2003, she was privileged to work alongside several noteworthy providers.

Interestingly enough, she was the first physician to practice in Pooler after agreeing to run a local satellite office for a fellow physician in 2006. After a couple of years passed, Dr. Braun decided to open her own practice in Pooler. On January 1, 2008, she opened the doors to Braun Internal Medicine, P.C. Oliver took on the role of practice manager, being responsible for all business and financial affairs. His combined accounting and EMT background allowed him to be a tremendous asset.

For quite some time, Dr. Braun had noticed the heavy burdens and limitations set in place by insurance companies which impacted the way in which she sought to treat her patients. Often, patients were unaware of the total cost of services until after being billed; there

was a “big unknown with no predictability and no transparency.” Many insurance deductibles and co-pays seemed to increase as coverage amounts decreased.

Uninsured individuals seldom felt they had any options at all.

Still, the traditional system compels doctors to maintain a seemingly unrealistic number of patients in order to coincide with insurance guidelines and receive payment for services rendered. Most insurance-based practices require physicians to maintain a base of over 4,000 total patients; this certainly sacrifices the patient-doctor relationship that is so important to Dr. Braun. Patients are usually allotted 15 short minutes of appointment time; the increased demands on doctors by insurance companies,

including heightened, administrative responsibilities like completing “electronic medical records” for each patient during visits, nearly cut that time in half.

“Billing and reporting requirements by insurance companies just rose exponentially, so a doctor is spending upward of 50% more time on documenting than treating; the landscape is so hostile,” Oliver stated.

That said, how many patients can communicate their concerns and have them properly addressed in just over seven minutes or even less? In addition, office wait times are typically longer due to overscheduling, if patients are even able to receive a timely appointment date without being pushed one or two months out.

“I have always put an emphasis on

good quality patient care and patient relationships. I like to give them time; you don’t have that luxury with the current healthcare system. You need to see more and more patients in order to stay profitable,” Dr. Braun said.

Therefore, with all the extra red tape, doctors themselves are at a disadvantage.

All the difficult insurance mandates consistently change. It is almost making payment harder and harder for physicians to obtain from year to year.

Dr. Braun became utterly dissatisfied with the system and decided to make an enormous change. As she became more familiar with the DPC model in healthcare, it seemed to be the option she was looking for, designed to combat the traditional “broken system” used in primary care.

After deciding to become a DPC physician, Dr. Braun re-opened her office under the new name PhoenixDPC, Inc. in 2017.

Though DPC was started in the U.S. over 20 years ago, it is still a very unfamiliar concept to many individuals; it is “fairly new” in the South but more prevalent in other regions of the country.

DPC is used for outpatient treatment.

However, in no way does it replace insurance coverage for specialist care or hospital visits.

“Insurance companies have their place, just not in primary care,” Dr. Braun asserted.

Being that primary care makes up “about 80%” of medical care, DPC is invaluable. “Patients pay a set monthly

membership fee for unlimited office visits,” so DPC physicians strive to keep their patients as healthy as possible to limit those visits.

“You want to treat them well to keep them healthy,” Oliver commented.

Patients count on that quality service at each visit. “There are no hidden fees; overhead and paperwork is reduced,” so treatment is a fraction of what it is in the

traditional system. Dr. Braun is, therefore, able to serve her patients better without all the unnecessary demands and rigidity of constantly inflating cost structures. DPC coverage normally ranges from $59-$99/ month for adults, depending on age; individuals ages 15-20 have a low rate of $10/month if their parents or guardians are members, while a four-person family is covered for $198/month. Payments follow an initial $99 registration fee. There are absolutely no deductibles and no co-pays; the membership fee covers all normal primary care needs.

Transparency is required so patients are always aware of any services not covered prior to receiving treatment.

As DPC physicians maintain a “small patient panel” that cannot exceed 600 total patients, Dr. Braun is happy for the opportunity to spend more time with her patients—time they need and appreciate.

Patients are usually able to get same-day or next-day appointments with short wait times. They can also book virtual visits.

While covering the broad scope of normal primary care needs for “complete body wellness,” She specializes in several chronic conditions, namely “diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol.” She offers a wide array of services to patients, whether annual physical examinations, managing illnesses and chronic conditions, preventative treatment or administering imaging and labs; special labs not covered

by DPC are offered at a discounted rate. A list of services provided can be viewed at

www.phoenixdpc.com. Dr. Braun also does “wholesale pharmaceutical dispensing” with many common medications so patients can receive them at an affordable rate. Compared to normal retail costs, patients can usually expect “savings of over 80%” on lab services and pharmaceuticals.

Some patients have seen that the huge savings more than pays for the membership fee.

“We simplify the whole operation and do away with unnecessary clutter…the things that make medicine expensive,” she stated.

In addition, PhoenixDPC patients have high accessibility to Dr. Braun; they can reach her at almost any time, as they may email, call or text her since they receive her cell phone number to use when needed.

“They get their needs taken care of immediately and not several days later,” she said.

The DPC model is also advantageous to employers, as they are able to experience immense savings. There are even reductions in employee time out from work for medical visits since there are seldom long patient wait times. Actually, companies across the U.S. have reported hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings both in pharmaceuticals and medical care. This makes it affordable for even the smallest of companies.

Considering all the benefits, Dr. Braun feels that the use of DPC in the area will soon take off.

“I think it’s going to grow, but people have to get used to it first. It’s good for the patients, but it’s also great for the doctors,” she said. Doctors are able to leave work at work without having the burden of carrying it home, whether physically or mentally.

As the DPC model continues to grow nationwide, Oliver hopes for a future where primary care is “carved out” of traditional insurance coverage, which will allow for an “open market,” or one that will basically “regulate itself” so that medical costs will decrease.

Dr. Braun’s entire quality of life has increased, as she has extra time to spend with her family and enjoy priceless moments. She, too, likes doing yoga and ballroom dancing.

“I have more spare time. When I’m home, I’m home for myself and my family.

Both my professional life and my personal life have changed,” she said.

Dr. Heidi Braun is driven to provide her patients with “quality healthcare that makes sense,” as excellence in healthcare should never be sacrificed.

ooler has an all new and exciting entertainment venue. In fact, there is nowhere like it in the surrounding area. Premier Bowl & Bistro, located next to their sister property, Frames n’ Games, recently opened its doors to the public. As it is a family-owned business, Christopher, “Chris,” Smith, the sales and marketing manager, feels that the “personal touch makes a difference,” and he is enthusiastic about what is to come.

“Once people know we’re here, it’s really going to take off. I’m excited,” he said.

Understanding that Frames n’ Games often “caters to kids,” Premier was designed with adults in mind. It gives adults the option to be in a more mature environment, especially since there is a 21- year-old admittance requirement after 6 p.m. each day.

“We want to create an entertainment destination for adults…the ultimate adult entertainment destination. We still welcome kids before 6 p.m. But, of course, we do have the curfew after 6 p.m. Anyone can come in; we don’t discourage anyone,” Chris stated.
