Are You Ready for Health Insurance Open Enrollment?

The Medicare Open Enrollment Period is when everyone with Medicare has to choose to either keep their current plan or enroll in a different one. Health and drug plans often change cost, coverage, and who is in their networks from year to year. It’s tempting to keep what you have, even if you aren’t satisfied, because navigating health care options can be overwhelming to the consumer - but not to Melissa Stille, licensed health care broker, who has been in the health insurance industry for 17 years. As the sole proprietor of Stille-DeWitt Health Brokerage she is dedicated to presenting her clients with the best health care options available because “I work for my clients, not the insurance company!”

Open enrollment Oct 15-Dec 7

Melissa says, “They are predicting more changes with the 2026 plans. It’s imperative that everyone with Medicare review their plan options again this year.”

Plan changes cannot be submitted until October 15, but you can start preparing NOW. “We have just 54 days to review everyone’s plans and submit applications for 2026 plans,” says Melissa. With years of experience, she can explain the four parts of Medicare (A, B, C, and D) as well the difference between Medicare Advantage and Supplemental Plans. She can also assist with seeing if you qualify for Extra Help (federal prescription help), Medicaid or to eliminate the monthly $185 Medicare Part B Premium (2025 premium).

Melissa also works with Medicare recipients under 65, including those who have Medicare through Social Security Disability because they too have to make the same decisions annually. When someone qualifies for a level of Medicaid, there are additional Medicare Advantage plans available. She says, “If you are getting help through the state Medicaid program and would like for us to check the status of your state Medicaid, please call or email me.”

Questionnaire

Melissa is using a questionnaire to obtain your information along with the compliant form needed prior to meeting with her. It asks for your basic information, a list of your doctors, your medications and any concerns you may have. It’s crucial you include all medications accurately. Melissa states, “I am asking that each person I meet with to complete this. After you complete the questionnaire, we can start working on looking at plans that fit YOUR needs.”

Beware of Scams

She says, “There are going to continue to be scam calls/ emails happening again this year. Medicare will NOT be calling you. You may be scammed by someone who only wants to make a buck off you.” Their only goal is for you to change your plan.

“That’s how they make money. They do not have any special plans, so don’t be fooled,” says Melissa. “They can change your plan without a signature or without you knowing! All they need is your Medicare number or Social Security number, so please do not give it out.”

Local Trusted Agent

It’s important to get local help, someone who knows you and your circumstances.

Working with Melissa—at no cost to you—will ensure you

• get the most benefits from your plan

• get the lowest drug cost

• get personal service all year whenever you need help or have questions

“My service is always free to the consumer. For plans that are commissionable, I get paid by the insurance companies. Because I believe in doing the right thing for my clients, I also look at plans I won’t get paid for and if that plan is right for your needs, we will work together to enroll you with that plan.” Melissa has offices in Springfield and Rincon but may not be at both offices every day. Therefore, all client meetings will be by appointment only this year and must be scheduled 48 hours prior to meeting. LON HARDEN A Servant’s Heart in Action

When Reverend Lon Harden walked into the Effingham Chamber of Commerce’s 2025 Annual Meeting, he had no idea he was about to receive the surprise of a lifetime. The longtime pastor of Guyton’s Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church was there simply to support the Chamber—but he left as the recipient of their highest honor.

Nearly two hundred business and community leaders watched as Rev. Harden was presented with the 2025 John Adam Treutlen Award, the Chamber’s most prestigious civic recognition, honoring his decades of unwavering leadership and service throughout Effingham County.

“I went to the event to support the Chamber—I didn’t even know the award was happening,” Rev. Harden recalls. “When they announced my name, I was floored! Receiving the award was definitely phenomenal, and I’m still processing it.”

A Legacy of Excellence

The John Adam Treutlen Award carries deep significance in Effingham County. Named after Georgia’s first elected governor—a German immigrant who rose from indentured servant to wealthy merchant and landowner—the annual recognition honors residents who demonstrate exceptional courage, resilience, and commitment to the public good. Since its inaugural presentation in 1986, the award has recognized many notable Effingham residents, a distinguished group Rev. Harden now joins.

“The past recipients are a list of many I have looked up to in Effingham County,” he reflects humbly. “I feel unworthy but grateful and thankful forever.”

The honor came with additional recognition from the Georgia House of Representatives, where House Speaker Jon Burns of District 159 introduced a resolution commending Rev. Harden for his service and lasting impact on the community.

From Marine to Minister to Community Champion

Rev. Harden’s journey of service began in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served as a religious lay leader. After his military service, he built a distinguished thirty-year career with Signature Flight Support in Savannah, rising to duty manager and later being selected as a global ambassador for the company. Following retirement, he established Harlawn Yard Services LLC, giving him the flexibility to focus more fully on his ministry and community work.

At Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. Harden has worn many hats—previously serving as deacon, Sunday school superintendent, chairman of deacons, and youth pastor before stepping into his current pastoral role.

His civic involvement reads like a who’s who of community leadership: secretary of the Effingham County Industrial Development Authority, chaplain board member for Effingham Health System and its foundation, chaplain for Widow’s Son Masonic Lodge No. 396, volunteer with the Effingham County Victim-Witness Assistance Program, and past member of the Guyton Planning and Zoning Board. Perhaps most notably, he led the Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Committee for fourteen years and served as the 2025 MLK Day Parade grand marshal in Springfield.

Witnessing Transformation

As a lifelong Effingham County resident—leaving only during his Marine service—Rev. Harden has witnessed remarkable transformation in his community. “There have been a lot of changes. Effingham

has evolved from a small community to a place that’s recognized all over,” he observes. “Today we have a lot of people who aren’t natives, whereas thirty years ago everyone was from here.”

This growth brings both opportunities and challenges, but Rev. Harden sees it as overwhelmingly positive.

“It’s a wonderful place to live. We have a diversity of churches, good housing, and employment. People from the west coast to the north come here to relax and enjoy our way of life.”

Even his own congregation reflects this demographic shift. “There are new people in our congregation from Chicago, New York, and Milwaukee,” he notes. “People moving around, even in our churches, is a positive thing. We welcome newcomers.”

The Power of Participation

Rev. Harden’s philosophy on community involvement is both practical and profound: “It’s important to be involved, to get educated, and become a source of support yourself. In this way, you’ll learn at the table what you won’t learn on social media.”

He emphasizes the importance of firsthand knowledge in making sound decisions. “You’re able to make good sound decisions and learn why and what decisions are being made in the community. The lack of information leads to misunderstanding, and the community gets mad because they don’t know the background.”

His prescription for better community engagement?

“Support the chamber and municipality on a regular basis, which leads to being involved and informed about decisions. That’s how you know what’s really going on— by being more committed to activities in the county.”

A Vision for Effingham’s Future

Looking ahead, Rev. Harden hopes to see increased community support for local organizations and activities. He points to the wealth of resources available: the Effingham Chamber of Commerce, Habitat for Humanity, Manna House Ministries, Family Promise of the Coastal Empire, and the Fillin’ Station Food Pantry at Guyton Christian Church.

“We have growing pains and tough decisions to make sometimes, but when we’re educated, we can better understand what’s happening,” he explains.

As for his personal goals, Rev. Harden keeps it simple: “To be a better version of me according to God, to have what He would have me do in my ear continuously.”

Family and Faith

Behind every great servant leader stands a strong support system. Rev. Harden credits his wife Shelia, their children, siblings, and his mother, Juanita Harden, for their unwavering love and support. The recent arrival of their third grandson has brought additional joy to their lives.

“We’re really enjoying our three grandsons. Our children and grandchildren are our joy,” he shares warmly.

He’s equally grateful for his church family. “I could list two pages of names—there are so many people I serve with in faith and community. They encourage me, and we encourage each other to be helpful.”

The Heart of a Servant

The Effingham County Chamber of Commerce captured Rev. Harden’s essence perfectly in their statement: “Rev. Harden’s leadership has been a guiding

force in Effingham County for years. Whether in a church, a meeting room, or beside someone in need, he offers compassion, wisdom, and strength.”

The Effingham County Industrial Development Authority, where Rev. Harden has served as a valued Executive Committee member since his 2018 appointment by the City of Guyton, echoed this sentiment: “This award reflects a lifetime of service, leadership, and heart for the Effingham community. Rev. Harden’s compassion and commitment have truly shaped our community for the better.”

Despite the accolades, Rev. Harden remains characteristically humble about his recognition. “I never do anything for a pat on the back or for recognition. I am a servant through and through. I’m doing what I’m supposed to do according to God.”

In a world that often celebrates self-promotion, Reverend Lon Harden stands as a refreshing reminder that true leadership flows from a servant’s heart— and Effingham County is blessed to call him one of their own. ■

Habitat for Humanity of Effingham County Ramps Up Community Partnerships

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF EFFINGHAM COUNTY has been supporting families through attainable home ownership for the past 30 years. Last year, they completed their 24th home in Effingham County and are in the planning stages to build their next home in Rincon.

While they prepare, they have provided support for a community partner who has helped a local family with an important home modification. God’s Apostles Providing (GAP) Ministries is comprised of members of several area churches who were looking for a way to give back and serve in their community. Together, they found a niche that has given numerous families the gift of mobility.

“We decided early on that we just wanted to do wheelchair ramps,” says Keith Turner, co-founder of GAP Ministries. “By providing wheelchair ramps, it gives people freedom from their home.”

Since the group’s establishment in 2004, they have built 273 ramps – mostly in Effingham County. Over the years, funding has come from many different sources, including grants, churches and friends and relatives of the recipients, but for a recent project they were funded by Habitat for Humanity.

“GAP Ministries is a wonderful partner for our organization,” says Jimmy Rutland, President/CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Effingham County. “We are pleased to support this dedicated group of volunteers who are living out many of Habitat’s core values.”

The two groups came together to construct a ramp in Springfield for Timeka Sanders and her husband OJ, who has ALS and uses an electric wheelchair. As OJ’s condition worsened they knew they would eventually need a ramp to access their home, but that it would be expensive. The family reached out to United Way of the Coastal Empire for assistance, who made the connection between Habitat for Humanity and GAP Ministries.

In one Saturday, more than a dozen volunteers from GAP Ministries assembled a ramp for OJ. Once it was finished, he took his first trip down to visit his neighbors and spend time in the yard – things he loved to do before his mobility was limited.

“We were ecstatic,” says Timeka. “He came out with the biggest smile that I’ve seen in a long time.”

Even after being involved in the construction of hundreds of ramps, Keith recalls the feelings of joy he felt while seeing OJ’s reaction to the new addition to his home.

“That’s the reason we do it: we are making a difference in the lives of people that we come in contact with,” says Keith.

Habitat for Humanity of Effingham County also welcomes other groups who would like to volunteer their time and talents for construction projects or projects at the ReStore. Contact Jimmy Rutland at ceo@habitatec.org for details about how your group can help.

Daughter of Morocco, Disciple of Christ

For years, Karima Burdette was searching; searching for peace, for love, for belonging—a sense that her life had meaning beyond the pain she’d carried for decades.

Born in Morocco, raised partly in France, and now living in Effingham County, her journey has spanned continents, faiths, and identities. Today, she stands not only as a survivor of childhood trauma and domestic abuse but as a woman transformed by grace, by conviction, and, most of all, by God.

Her story, now told on the pages of her book, Muslim by Birth, Christian by Choice, began far from the quiet community of Guyton, where she lives today.

“It’s really about my testimony,” she said of the book. “I was Muslim, and for the longest time, for years, really, I was looking for a sense of belonging and purpose and looking for love and all these things in the wrong places.”

Karima was born and raised in Morocco. Like most in her country, she was born into Islam.

“Being Moroccan and Muslim, it was almost like it’s together,” she said. “When you are born in Morocco, you are born into the religion of being Muslim. There is nothing else. That’s who you are, that is your identity. If you leave that religion, you are almost like… you’re disowning your family.”

Even before she met the man who would later become her husband of 24 years, Karima felt the Lord tugging on her heart.

“I had people inviting me to church,” she said. “I had people give me a little Jesus card, which I still have to this day.

She didn’t grow up in a strictly religious household. Once she moved to France, Outside of Ramadan, her mom didn’t follow the religion, therefore neither did Karima

Still, Karima remembers asking her mother how to stay faithful to Islam while living in France with no strong Muslim presence or a mosque — how can she continue to be Muslim.

“As long as you’re a good person, that’s all that matters,” was her mother’s response.

That idea or being a good person stayed with Karima as she grew up and eventually moved to the United States at age 18, part of a hairstylist exchange program.

“I was chosen out of the blue in Paris to come to the US in an exchange program as a hairstylist with 24 other hairstylists,” she said.

What followed was a tumultuous chapter of Karima’s life. She entered a marriage that turned abusive — mentally, emotionally and physically abusive, to the point of her almost losing her life. Fortunately, she was able to escape that situation.

Later, she met another man, but the relationship lacked the commitment she needed.

“He didn’t want to get serious, and I felt like we need to just get away from that,” she said. “Since he won’t get serious, I wanted to do something new.”

That new beginning came unexpectedly—at a YMCA in Savannah.

“We met actually at the YMCA on Habersham in Savannah,” Karima said of the day she met her husband. “We were both divorced, we fell in love right away.”

That relationship led to marriage, but it also marked the start of Karima’s spiritual transformation.

“He was a Christian, and that’s when I became a Christian,” she said. “I didn’t realize … before I met my husband, but the Lord was after me.”

She started realizing, slowly, that God had a purpose for her. Her life started to transform but the change didn’t happen overnight.

“When I became a Christian. I got baptized on that same day,” Karima said. “I remember getting out of the baptism going, ‘Okay, is this it? Is this what it means to be a Christian?’ My life did not change right away. I was still smoking, I was still drinking, I was still dressing up revealing, I still went to clubs.”

She and her husband would go out and have a drink, go dancing, then go home and go to church on Sunday.

“I didn’t really know the Word of God then,” she said. “I didn’t read my Bible like I should.”

That began to shift as she experienced the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

“It took years to really see the Holy Spirit and feel the Holy Spirit and feel his conviction on my heart,” she said. “And that’s when I started changing. I started putting stuff down — just putting sin by sin down. That does not mean I’m sinless. I am far away from that. I am still a sinner, and I am under God’s grace every day, and I will sin till the day I die, because that’s who I am, and that’s who we are.”

The Bible tells her that all have sinned and all fall short of the glory of God. But Karima now lives each day with purpose.

“I have to strive every day to be a better person,” she said. “That doesn’t mean I’m not gonna stumble. It doesn’t mean I’m not going to fall short, but I’m gonna strive every day to read His Word, to have a relationship with Jesus and to have his help with the Holy Spirit, to walk me through this life.”

Even more profound than the outward changes was the inward healing she experienced through forgiveness. She remembered sleepless nights filled with nightmares about the people in her life who had hurt her.

When she became a Christian, she forgave those people — not because she wanted to, rather because God asked her to.

“It was not easy,” she said. “You forgive, but you don’t forget. Through Him, I was able to forgive these people. And when I forgave them, that burden was lifted off my back, and I no longer felt this hatred towards them, this bitterness. Instead, I see them for who God made them to be. And I see that they were hurt people, and that’s why they hurt me.”

Today, Karima lives a very different life. She no longer smokes, drinks, cusses or dresses in the way she used to. The changes were all made possible because of the Lord’s guidance.

“He took all those things away from me and cleansed me, and I’m just a different person,” she said.

Still, sharing her transformation wasn’t easy, especially with her family. She was searching for the right way to broach the conversation.

“I did tell her eventually,” Karima said. “I said, “Hey mom, I just want to let you know, I became a Christian.’ She’s like, ‘What? No, no, no, no, no, you can’t be Christian. You’re Moroccan, you’re Muslim. That’s it.’ I’m like, ‘No, I am Moroccan. That is my origin. But I can be anything I want

to be. If I want to be a Christian, I could be a Christian or Buddhist, whatever I want to be’”

The conversation stirred emotion in both mother and daughter. She wasn’t sure how to explain it, partly because she didn’t fully understand it herself. As she contemplated the issue she began to realize that the answer lied in her relationship with Jesus.

“At the end of the day, when I die, my mother cannot save me,” she said. “My father cannot save me. My family, no one can intercede for me, but Jesus, he’s the only one who can say, let her in. My mother cannot be there with me to say, let her in. That’s my daughter. So therefore, she can’t save me.”

She went to her mother and said, “Mom, I love you. I’m not trying to disown you. I’m not trying to be mean, but I found this God that loves me… who changed me, who gave me this peace that I’ve never had before.”

Karima told her she had found a father that I’ve been looking for. Her mother has come to accept her daughter’s conversion and they will often get together after church on Sunday.

“My prayer is that they see the Lord through me… not me, but him through me,” she said. “And hopefully, they’ll see that

he is the truth, and he is the life, and that they can give their life to Christ one day. That’s my hope.”

Karima’s journey from rejection to redemption, from religion to relationship, and from hurt to healing now serves a broader purpose. She wrote her story—her testimony—because she believes others need hope, too.

“I want to share that with the world,” she said. “Because we live in a world that’s full of hatred, and there’s a lot of people who are just really unhappy and depressed, and they’re all around us. I was one of them. I was one of those people with my makeup on and look my best and put a smile on and say, ‘Oh, I’m doing good. How are you doing?’ You know, I’d act like everything is good when it’s not.”

Now, when people read her book, they often share their own stories with her.

“Sometimes even worse,” she said. “They’re willing now to share their journey with me, because they’ve read about my story. But this is His story. I felt called to write it, and I felt called to share it.” ■

The Corner Table Effingham

Back to Effingham, that quiet little hamlet with a few eateries. Having so many chain eateries, it is quite difficult for the mom and pop shops to compete, but there is a star that stand out.

Whether you've just finished a round of golf, stopped by for lunch or dinner, or came to enjoy some music, Greenside has a lot to offer. The bar is always lively, and the service is excellent. The menu features a variety of golf-themed dishes, such as the Sand-Wedge Board, Bogie’s Hoagies, and Soups and Greens. The food is consistently good.

In addition to the many fun bar snacks like wings, nachos, burgers, soups, and salads, they also offer a small but quality dinner menu. The steaks and the famous southern-style shrimp and grits are particularly delicious. On weekends, they serve Prime Rib with a choice of two cuts: king or queen.

Sitting outside on the patio is always enjoyable, especially while sipping cocktails, listening to the live music, and savoring a great meal. Greenside is located in the Lost Plantation neighborhood, just off Fort Howard, nestled alongside the golf course “City Club at Lost Plantation.”

Help 82-Year-

Old Woman Rebuild her Life

Over the past year, extreme weather has wreaked havoc on the home and life of Rincon resident Peggy Rouse, forcing her to seek temporary shelter multiple times and even requiring hospitalization.

Thanks to the efforts of county and city agencies and some generous neighbors, the 82-year-old will soon return to a home that’s getting better by the day with much-needed improvements.

Rouse has lived in the Hickory Knob neighborhood since the early ‘90s. Neighbor Leigh Carter said Rouse lived there with her mother until her mother passed away. Although Carter’s husband cut Rouse’s grass, they didn’t have much contact with her. “She kept to herself,” Carter said.

Rouse’s troubles began in late September 2024, after Hurricane Helene knocked out power in the area. She contacted Effingham County Emergency Management and spoke to Deputy Director Shanna A. Smith, asking if there was a cool place where she could stay until power was restored. Smith quickly responded to the call.

“The county had a cooling station set up at the Clarence Morgan gym,” Smith said. “I took her there until I could make other

arrangements. After I made a phone call to Family Promise of the Coastal Empire, she was able to stay in their facility for a few days until she could return home.”

Smith returned to the home with Rouse and carried the woman’s bags through the front door. She was taken aback by what she saw. There was black mold and a sizable hole in the roof with remnants of a tattered tarp that was fighting a losing battle against the elements.

“The strong smell of mold and mildew hit me in the face along with the reality that sweet Ms. Peggy had been living in these conditions longer than I ever thought possible,” Smith said. “I offered to help connect her with resources to remedy this situation but could tell that Ms. Peggy was hesitant to let me linger for too long. For months I checked in with her periodically by calling or dropping by.”

The second weather challenge came with heavy snow and ice in January. Smith, recalling Rouse’s situation and a roof that had become severely damaged over time, helped arrange

for Family Promise to house the octogenarian until the ice and snow melted.

The deteriorating roof created another problem in June. Water poured into Rouse’s living room and black mold continued to spread through most of the walls, ceiling, furniture and carpet throughout her home. Rouse realized she needed a roof repair, and Smith connected her with several agencies and programs that could possibly help her start the process. In the meantime, the area was hit with tremendous amounts of rain.

Smith dropped by to see Rouse after being out of town for 11 days. This time it was the woman’s appearance, rather than the home’s condition, that caught Smith’s attention.

“When she opened the door, there stood a woman who was defeated and at the breaking point,” Smith recalled. “She needed help desperately more than ever. Ms. Peggy ended up being admitted to the hospital that night for four days. There was no real progress on where Ms. Peggy would return after discharge. It was not safe for her to go back home.”

Upon her discharge from the hospital, Rouse returned to Family Promise and has stayed there for the past two months. Smith said Ms. Katrina Bostick and her team with Family Promise stepped up and welcomed Ms. Peggy with open arms, essentially saving her from transitioning to a homeless shelter.

“If you work in public service, you know that one of the most valuable assets you have are those connections you’ve made with people around you,” Smith said. “These are the people who work in the community you live in and who have proven to you time and again that they will do anything in their power to help those they serve. The love her community has shown for someone they have never met is beautiful to see.”

One individual who stepped forward to help Rouse is Michael Cannon, owner of Michael’s Roofing. He learned of Rouse’s situation through a friend, Matt Evans, and went to her home within an hour. Cannon said he couldn’t believe the condition of the roof and knew right then he was going to fix it, no questions asked.

“I called up my longterm supplier, Superior Distribution, and asked for the materials,” Cannon said. “They donated the shingles, and I donated the rest of the supplies and labor. I was thankfully in a position to help with the financial and labor aspects of this project. I am blessed to be in a position where I have the resources necessary to help my community and I will continue to serve it the best that I can.”

Marissa Carter, the company’s operations manager and Cannon’s granddaughter, said her grandfather informed her of Rouse’s predicament and asked if she could schedule the job as soon as possible. The following week, Cannon’s crew showed up at Rouse’s home.

“It was very sad,” Evans said. “It wasn’t the worst home I had ever seen but one of the worst with someone living in it. I knew right away I had to try and help, especially with an elderly neighbor. I made a Facebook post and started contacting some of my subcontractors. A neighbor is longterm friends with Mike, owner of Michael’s Roofing. He contacted Mike and the next week we had a new roof.”

So far, Evans noted, everything has been donated and $1,450 has been collected through a GoFundMe account he established. “My family and I love to give back when we can, especially when it’s a neighbor,” Evans said. “We are members of Rincon Church of God, where we volunteer, and I am a board member for Effingham YMCA. We have been blessed in many ways and try to return that blessing when we can.”

Evans listed the following materials and items still needed to complete the home restoration:

» 20 pieces of 2x4x12 lumber

» 2 pieces of 2x4x16 treated lumber

» 4 pieces of 2x4x16ft lumber

» 4 pieces of 2x10x8ft lumber

» 25 pieces of 2x4x8 studs, four sheets of OSB sheathing

» 20 pieces of 12-ft. 5/4 deck boards

» 15 pieces of 2x8x12 treated lumber

» 40 sheets of 1/2-inch 12-ft. Sheetrock

» one 36-inch vanity, two toilets

» four ceiling fans

» two bathroom fans

» one 60-inch vanity, one 60-inch fiberglass tub and surround

» one 60-inch fiberglass shower and surround

» 1,600 sq-ft. LVP flooring

» one 36-inch exterior door

» several rolls of drywall tape, buckets of drywall mud

» several bags of 20-minute drywall joint compound

» 100 linear feet of baseboard and quarter round

» 10 gallons of Kilz or cover stain

» 10-12 gallons of white paint.

To make a monetary donation, go to “Help Ms. Peggy Return to a Safe Home” at gofundme.com.

“I couldn’t believe the situation and knew that once the replacement was complete, she was one step closer to getting to go home,” Marissa said. “Mike has such a caring heart and he knows that the Lord will provide. We were thankful to be a part of this project and wish Ms. Rouse all our best here at Michael’s Roofing.”

Matt Evans earns an assist for informing Michael Cannon about the condition of Rouse’s home. The owner of Centaur Home Renovations accessed the home through Smith.

A number of local agencies helped remove items and damaged parts of Rouse’s home. These include Effingham Emergency Management Agency, Effingham County Fire and Rescue, Rincon Fire Department, and Effingham County Emergency Services.

Not only is Rouse getting a new roof, but she will also benefit from a new deck that will replace its dilapidated and unsafe predecessor. Additionally, contractors have offered to donate blinds and furniture and remove some of the many trees in her backyard so they won’t fall on her roof again.

Rouse has been out of her home since early July. Smith said the Rincon woman values her independence and knowing where everything is located. She remains grateful, however, for the way the community has come to her aid.

“Ms. Peggy told me that her faith in humanity has been restored,” Smith said. “What has happened over these last two months has been nothing short of a miracle. Her neighbors, who were unaware of the full situation, have really shown so much support for her and the outreach is amazing.”

Carter is among those who has taken to heart the command to love your neighbor. “The neighbors are very caring and have stepped up,” she said. “We’ll make sure she gets what she needs.” ■

Finding Magic in the Madness of Motherhood

When Did I Become the Grownup?

Somewhere between signing another field trip permission slip and googling whether chicken thighs are still good after four days in the fridge, it hit me: I am the grown up now. It wasn’t a dramatic realization. No spotlight. No theme music. Just me, standing in the kitchen holding a laundry basket, telling someone (possibly everyone) that no, they cannot have another snack because dinner is almost ready. That’s when the moment landed like a rogue LEGO underfoot. I am the adult. I’m the one making the dentist appointments. I’m the one who knows the insurance login. I am the emergency contact. Me.

Who let this happen?

It wasn’t always this way. I used to be the one asking to stay out late. Now I’m the one texting, “ETA??” at 9:03 PM like some kind of worried grandma. I used to think adults had it all figured out, knew how to handle money, plan vacations, and make small talk at cookouts. But now I’m out here Googling “how many times can you reheat pasta” and avoiding eye contact at drop off because I don’t have the energy to talk and smile.

When I was little, I thought being an adult meant choosing your own bedtime, drinking coffee like it was glamorous, and never having to eat vegetables if you didn’t want to. Turns out, being an adult means drinking lukewarm coffee out of a travel mug you forgot in the car yesterday, and sneaking spinach into smoothies like a culinary ninja because someone in your house has decided green things are “suspicious.”

It means going to bed early because you’re tired, not rebellious. It means calling your own parents to ask how they survived this season, and getting misty eyed when your mom says, “We didn’t. We just got through it.”

I’ve been a mom since I was 19. That’s all of my twenties and nearly all of my thirties spent raising humans. I was just out of High School when I was knee deep in diapers and sleep deprivation. And somehow, I blinked and now I’m 37 with a 16-year-old, a 13-year-old, and an 11-year-old. I’ve spent more time cutting sandwiches into triangles than I ever did being carefree.

And let’s talk about being the one with the purse snacks. I used to carry lip gloss and an ID. Now I carry tissues,

bandaids, a rogue Capri Sun, and three broken crayons that have melted into a zippered pocket. I used to go out and be the fun. Now, if I’m out past 9 PM, it better involve a drive thru and stretchy pants.

What’s wild is that I still don’t feel like a grown up on the inside. I feel like a kid wearing adult responsibilities like an ill fitting Halloween costume. I’m winging it, making grocery lists, budgeting, and pretending to understand my kid’s math homework (which, let’s be honest, I absolutely do not). I’m trying to teach my kids life lessons while also hiding in the pantry eating chocolate chips straight from the bag.

But somehow, in the chaos, I am the grown up. I’m the one shaping the tone of the home. I’m the one who sets the rules, breaks up the fights, and decides whether we’re eating frozen pizza or scrambled eggs for dinner when the day’s been long. I’m the one showing my kids what it looks like to be responsible, messy, loving, flawed, present, and real.

My husband and I met in high school, and we’ve spent the last 17 years growing up with each other. There are days we still feel like teenagers pretending to be adults, until we look around and realize we’re raising four actual people who depend on us for everything from moral guidance to laundry detergent.

And even though he’s the social butterfly and I’m the one hiding behind oversized sunglasses at the school carnival, we’re doing it. We’re grown ups. Weird, unqualified, slightly chaotic grown ups. But grown ups nonetheless.

So, if you’re like me, feeling mildly shocked every time someone calls you “ma’am” or hands you a clipboard assuming you know what you’re doing, just know you’re not alone. We’re all out here just trying to figure it out. With dry shampoo, expired coupons, and a dream.

We may not always feel like we’re doing it right. But somehow, we’re doing it. The meals get made. The kids get hugged. The appointments get scheduled. (Eventually.) And when your child grabs your hand and calls you “Mom,” it hits you.

You are the grown up. And you’re doing a better job than you think. ■
