In our last issue we celebrated our 6 Year Anniversary. That is definitely an accomplishment we are proud of. In the midst of this celebration, I found myself going through files and looking at some of the issues we have published since our beginning.

Talk about memories! With each issue I looked at, it brought back certain memories.... certain things I remembered happening while we were working on that particular issue. Some memories were good, some were bad...but for the most part, it was just exciting!

As the memories flowed, I found myself filled Julie Hales, Publisher with emotion. As I have stated in the past, I am a very blessed womn. I am doing what I always wanted to do. I am publishing a magazine....right here in Efingham County....right here at home. I am fortunate enough to be able to watch my dream come true.

Now, I am also able to sit back and reflect on those people we have featured in each issue of Effingham Magazine and how some of these folks have been able to do the same thing.....accomplish their own dreams.

One of those folks is our cover story, Josh Reddick. Josh was on the cover of our very first issue, as he had just signed with the Boston Red Sox to play in their minor league division. Now, Josh has made it to the majors, been traded from Boston to Oakland, and has just won the American League Golden Glove Award....all in 6 short years.

I remember watching Josh play in rec ball here in Effingham and as a member of the Mustangs of South Effingham High. Even as a child, you could tell he had a passion for the game. That passion is what has carried him through and made him the remarkable player - and individual - he is today.

Josh recently shared his story with us....and that story you will find on the next pages. I happened to be in the office the day he came in to meet with our writer. I listened to most of his interview. I was amazed, and proud, of the young man he has become.

It is evident from his words that he has a strong sense of family and love for his community. Josh is still very proud to call Effingham his home.

I guess that is one thing we definitely have in common.

Home Base For Josh Reddick

enny and Cheryl Reddick never knew what to expect when their five year old son, Josh, first mentioned he wanted to play Major League baseball. But they gave him every opportunity to succeed. They supported him in every way. They paid for all the traveling, hotel and food expenses, and allowed Josh to do whatever it took to fulfill his dream.

Now, unless you have been living under a rock for the past few years, most of Effingham County is familiar with the story of local baseball legend Josh Reddick, who made it to the major leagues. He played for the Boston Red Sox and was traded to the Oakland Athletics. What you might not know is how down to earth and “hometown” Josh Reddick remains, despite his fame.

Born in February 1987, Josh started out playing baseball in the recreation department league before moving on to high school baseball. He was coached by his dad in his younger years, and then by Coach Kirkland as a Mustang at South Effingham High School.

Josh played extremely well in high school and attracted the attention of the minor leagues. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 17th round of the 2006 MLB Draft. In 2011, he was traded to the Oakland Athletics, where he played right field for his first full year in the majors.

Being traded to the Oakland A’s was a different experience.

Reddick says “It was a different team, different dynamics, very different from Minor League or high school baseball.”

Even though it’s a “job,” it’s still a passion for him, allowing him to do what he loves. He plays ball daily during the season, somewhere around 30 games in five weeks. Off-season is the end of October to Mid-February. That’s when he returns home to Effingham County to regroup and prepare for the next season.

Josh recently became the first Oakland outfielder in 27 years to win a Golden Glove, capping a debut season in Oakland that surpassed the expectations of many. “Receiving the Golden Glove Award pretty much cements my position as a right fielder, but it’s always been a good fit” Reddick acknowledges.

He took advantage of some time off during the last off season for minor wrist surgery on his left wrist to repair a torn cartilage.

He was able to play through the season with the injury. And, then use the time wisely to take care of it. Otherwise, Josh has enjoyed an injury-free career.

He operates at a very different level of competition now. When he was a younger player in high school and rec sports, he was able to stand out and be a star on the team. Then, as Reddick progressed to the minor leagues, he became one of several stars on the team. “Once you get to the majors, everyone on the team is a star and is operating at the top of their game”.

Josh’s attitude towards losing has even changed over the years.

“You have to give it some time to sink in. The locker room is real quiet after a loss- you don’t go in on a high note. But once it’s over, it’s over. You move on. Don’t carry that loss with you”. This “leave it behind” philosophy is also important in life. It is just part of the game. There is always tomorrow.

Josh gained a profound understanding of loss the first year or two he was away. “The homesickness was awful,” he shares quietly. Just a young kid in his early 20’s, he came from a tight knit family and had long periods of time between visits home.

Some of the older players in the AA and AAA leagues served as mentors and helped him understand how to handle the separation from his family.

Life has brought some changes to his family over the past five years since he made the Majors. His older brother, Bradford, is married now with a family - wife Crissy and daughter Cayden.

His little sister isn’t so little anymore. The youngest of the Reddick trio, Danielle is already a tall girl at 5’10” and an accomplished softball player. Although he’s regrettably never been able to catch any of her games, Josh “hears she’s pretty good” and can really smack a softball, something he’s very proud of.

He still has family dinners two to three times a week with his grandparents, Arnold and Judy Reddick, when he’s home during the off-season. It can be anywhere from an intimate gathering of five or six to a large family gathering with all the aunts and uncles and cousins included. If he’s not eating at his grandmother’s table, you might find him at one of his favorite spots, eating crab legs at the Crab Shack on Tybee.

It is very important to him that he establishes a home base and puts down roots in his native Effingham County. It keeps him grounded and keeps him humble. One way of putting down those roots is to buy his own home. He says “it’s essential to have my own place, a place to put down roots and call my own.”

He stays busy rambling with his dogs, a three year old American Bulldog named Backster (“with a C.K., not an X”), and a brand new English Bulldog puppy named Murray.

He also likes to kick back and play video games. His favorite game is Assassin’s Creed - an open-world action adventure for the XBox 360, his gaming system of choice.

The nearby Ebenezer River provides him with a quiet spot to do a little fishing or just spend some time reconnecting with himself and finding his inner calm after baseball season. “It’s fall and winter mostly when I am home” he says, and it’s perfect for quiet contemplation and a little line-casting, but he admits to missing summer sports on the water. “I miss it alright, but I think that the sacrifice is worth it for doing what I love, playing baseball”.

When the players are traveling, they have to wear a collared shirt and no sneakers. So, Josh will often choose a western style shirt with pearl snap buttons. Couple that with his preference for country music, and it’s no wonder that in California he is regarded as a Southern redneck boy. He acknowledges with a sly smile that he plays up the “cowboy personality” with a carefully crafted look - your basic Wrangler jeans from Walmart, cowboy hat (he owns two) and boots.

Although he considered himself an average student in high school, he had begun to pursue his college education and was working towards a degree in sports medicine before joining the Major Leagues. His contract currently provides for his three remaining years of college, and he has up to two years after retirement to take advantage of the offer. He maintains an interest in Sports Medicine but has broadened his interests over the past few years and could end up pursuing something else entirely.

In the past year, he’s been ranked among the top ten in home runs. Perhaps his greatest achievement to date is being awarded the Rawlings Golden Glove award for being the best Right Fielder in the American League. Other players to receive this award in the past include Jeff Francouer (2007), Dwight Evans and Andre’ Dawson (both eight-time winners in the 70’s and 80’s).

True to his generous nature, he treated his mother to “Rock of Ages” on Broadway earlier in November when she accompanied him to New York to accept the award.

He’s been able to meet a few baseball idols along the way.

Derek Jeter came up on base during a game and congratulated him on making the majors and wished him success and he says “it is a huge honor to have played with David Ortiz.”

He’s always gotten strong parental support for his dream. Both parents were very driven to see that each of their children had every opportunity to explore their dreams and did what they

could to help that along.

Despite a three year age difference between Josh and his older brother, he reminisces about being driven around by his brother from seventh grade until high school. “Having an older brother definitely made life easier, at least until I could drive,” said Josh.

Like most young men, he has a penchant for cars, and has purchased several new and used ones in the past few years. Six, to be exact. He currently drives a 2011 BMW M3 hardtop convertible or his 1992 Silverado, decked out Effingham County style with lifts and pipes.

His financial advisor helps him manage his finances, a very wise move for this level-headed athlete. “I like to take care of my family, I feel like it’s my responsibility and an opportunity to give back to them.” He occasionally treats his parents and family members with gifts, but generally is saving for his future and the purchase of his new home.

Josh remains active in community activities. He donates his time and expertise to mentoring young athletes during the South Effingham High School Hitting Camp each December during the Major League off-season “I’m a player, not a coach” he chuckles. “It takes a special person to be a coach and I have a high regard for the coaches in my life, particularly my dad and Coach Kirkland.”

South Effingham High School is finally retiring his old jersey, #24. It hasn’t been worn since he graduated. Retiring the jersey has been highly talked about for several years, but it “took a little media push from WSAV a little while back to make it happen,” Reddick shares in conspiratorial whisper.

Looking to the future, Reddick wants to create a charity for Effingham County as a way of giving back. “The caliber of competitiveness in rec department sports is not what it was when I

was a young player and I would like to ignite the spark again.” He’s observed that kids in general don’t seem to have a strong sense of commitment to anything, and feels that they are missing out on great opportunities by not playing sports on some level. He thinks it is good for kids to make a strong commitment to something like sports and extracurricular activities.

At the heart of who he is, Josh Reddick is an ordinary guy with extraordinary talents. “I just want to be that friendly guy, that average guy.” He likes it when people stop him around town and say hello. “What is it they say?” he asks with a grin. “I put my pants on one leg at a time like everyone else.”

Just how important his hometown connection is to him is evident by the play of emotions across his face when he talks about a local country star who made it big. “I’ve always been a little disappointed in [him] not being a stronger presence his hometown community and giving back a little more” and Reddick is doggedly determined to never lose sight of where he came from.

Giles, Jr. was born and raised in Rincon, and he has fond memories of a loving family and good times. “My daddy had a small farm and I was one of the only black boys who had a horse,” he said. “Her name was Daisy, and I’d jump on her and go and wink at the girls, and then gallop away!” His seemed a normal life for a teenage boy, but on December 7, 1941, all that would change. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

“I was at the end of this street cutting wood for the fireplace,” he said. “It came on the radio and Mama and Daddy came hollering and telling what happened.”

Before long he would become part of that war, and Giles remembers that exact date too – “It was on September 1, 1943. It was my birthday.

You had to register for the draft at 18 years old, and I registered for the draft and I joined the Navy on the same day.”

At the time he was going to Beach High School. He did not graduate. He left instead to serve our country, and while he was only 18 years old, he would take part in one of the biggest battles of WWII - the invasion of France, better known as “D-Day”.

Our country’s Declaration of Independence states that ‘All men are created equal’, but as Giles set out to serve our country, even as he followed orders to become indoctrinated into the Navy to fight for our freedoms, the reality was that ‘all men are not treated equal.’ Because he is Black, he endured hurt and isolation, but most of the time he turned negative situations into positive ones.

His first assignment was to go to Columbus, Georgia for a physical examination. A group of 30 or more young men from the area would be traveling there by bus and Giles was the only black man. They met at the bus station in Savannah, and one meal ticket was given to the group so they could eat before their journey. They were to eat at The White House Restaurant on the corner of Liberty and West Broad, but since

Giles was Black, he couldn’t eat with them.

“They didn’t know what to do with me,” he said, “but finally they put me in the kitchen to eat.” He laughs – “but the funny thing is, the cooks were Black, and they gave me more food than the others!”

When they boarded the bus, Giles again faced discrimination. During that time Blacks had to sit in the back of the bus, but on the ride to Columbus, the only single seat was up front across from the driver, and that was where he had to sit – alone – but he saw it as a good thing, “It was the first time I ever got to sit in the front,” he said.

At Columbus, Giles was again separated - he was not allowed in the same sleeping quarters with the whites – “They put me in a linen room warehouse,” he said. “There were lots of sheets and blankets and mattresses. Everything in there was clean, and I made me a bunk.

“I did not see them (the other men) any more.

I came home, and after the exam they called me to go to Atlanta, and this time I rode the Nancy Hanks.”

He traveled alone.

Giles changed trains and headed for Washington, DC. He enjoyed the beauty of the passing countryside, but he also suffered some anger at being isolated and at not being treated as an equal with the other young men.

“Lunch time came, and I was sitting at a table alone,” he said, “and a young white sailor sat with me. We talked and laughed. We had a good time – and my whole life changed!” Giles raised his voice as he said this, remembering this act of kindness, this act of blindness, that made a lasting impression on his life.

Giles’ final stop was Maryland and he was taken to Bainbridge for basic training. “It was just for Blacks,” he said, “and there were 5 or 6 guys I knew. We ‘broke boots’ (graduated) and then had nine days leave.”

They headed back home. “You paid to get home, and the government paid to get you

back,” he said, “but they didn’t tell me that I had to make a reservation (to get back). The night the young sailors were to return to their base, they were at the Savannah train station ready to board the Seaboard train to Washington, DC. Local girls were there to send them off, and “We were kissing and hugging,” he said. It was a good time until Giles boarded the train and the conductor had to put him off because he didn’t have a reservation, “….but he told me what to do,” Giles said, and he experienced more kindness, and with a little more help he was able to get a seat on a Coastline train coming up from Miami. He arrived in D.C. at the same time as his friends on the other train, and they were amazed when they saw him. He laughed, “I was on the fast train that only made a few stops,” he said.

There were 240 men in his company, and they traveled by truck to their barracks, awaiting their orders. “I was shipped to Boston to a ship,” he said. He was back on a train, and he had to change trains in Grand Central Station – “There were more people in that station than in Rincon!” he said, “but people will help you.”

More kindness - the nation was pulling together.

In Boston, Giles’ boarded the U.S.S. Nevada, one of our great battleships that was sunk at Pearl Harbor, then raised, refurbished, and returned to active duty. As one of the new sailors on board, part of Giles’ ‘unofficial indoctrination’ was to be hassled by one of the other sailors. It was supposed to be all in fun, but Giles didn’t know that, and he took on the guy in an unrelenting headlock. After that no one bothered him, “Because I was so strong!” he said, “and I was given the nickname ‘Georgia Boy’.”

“We (the black sailors) had our own general quarters, and we took care of the officers. We’d cook for them, care for their uniforms and get what they needed,” he said. When a battle ensued, they had only a few minutes to get to battle stations, and their battle station was in the ship’s hull, below the water line, where the ammunition was stored.

The ship had ten 14’ guns, five on the bow and five on the

stern, and quite a few anti-aircraft guns. “It took three bags of powder to launch one projectile that could travel up to 20 miles,” said Giles.

“At that time Blacks were not allowed to shoot guns,” he said.

“Some people did not approve of that, but a gun is not any good unless you get ammo to it.”

D-Day raged. “It was a non-stop battle,” Giles said. “We stayed down there for three days and three nights, sending ammo up to the guns.”

On board reporter, W.C. Heinz, described the scene: “These men have now been at their battle stations for 74 hours. These men now are men with dirty, unshaven faces, and red, swollen eyes. These are men who have slept for only an hour or two during all this….yet these men are ready to go again at any time.”

When the war ended Giles returned home. He worked in Savannah for National Cash Register as the shipping and receiving clerk for 37 ½ years. He and his wife, Inez, have been married for 63 years, and they have two sons, Alphonso and Elliot, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

His job and family have kept him busy, but he has always been ready to help in the community. He served on the Rincon Planning Board and on the organizing committee of the Effingham County Athletic Department, and he’s highly involved with local veteran activities. He’s a member of the Sons of Allen and the NAACP. He was the first Black to work at a county voting poll, and he was honored as the Grand Marshall for the 2008 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. parade.

Giles has been helpful to the community in so many ways, that when the Rincon City Council proposed to name the park on 7th Street after a local person, it was Mayor Ken Lee who proposed that the park be named after Giles, “He’s just regarded so highly as a veteran and community leader, that there was just no one else to consider,” said Mayor Lee.

DRAWING THE LINE with

Tracy Yardley!

incon resident Tracy Yardley has quite the career. While his friends and neighbors may do the usual nine to five shifts in the community, Yardley is busy living out his childhood dream.

He is an artist for the famous comic book series, Sonic the Hedgehog, and he couldn’t be happier with his day job.

He is a freelance contractor with Archie Comics, where he acts as the principal “penciler” for the popular comic. “The comic books are like an assembly line,” he explains. For every issue, the editor sends Yardley a script. He then draws out the script, and other artists design the lettering, the ink and the coloring.

His love for drawing started at an early age, and it has been his passion since he has been able to pick up a pencil. Back when Atari’s were popular during his early childhood, he would draw Pac Man, Mickey Mouse and other popular characters. “I’ve always drawn,” he says. “I would say as early as middle school I knew that was what I wanted to do. There was nothing else that I was particularly good at or enjoyed nearly as much.”

Despite his current success with comic book penciling, his true childhood passion lied

within the daily newspaper. “I never really read a lot of comic books when I was a kid,” Yardley recalls. “I really enjoyed reading the newspaper strips.

That’s what I enjoyed when I was a kid, and I really wanted to do that all the way up until college.”

During his time at SCAD, Yardley even had his own comic strip in SCAD’s weekly paper. And while he would love to be able to have his own syndicated comic strip one day, he says it is quite the endeavor to undertake. “To do that professionally is extremely difficult,” he says, giving credit to those who create comics daily for the newspapers.

And it’s not just the newspaper comic strips that are a hard career to break into; like any type of media career, there are thousands of people who want to do it, but they can’t find a way to get their foot in the door. Luckily, Yardley’s once in a lifetime opportunity found him when he least expected it.

While attending a comic book convention, Marlin Shoop, an acquaintance from college, happened to walk by him while he was doodling a picture of Sonic the Hedgehog in one of his sketchbooks. “He looked at it and said, ‘That’s great. I know the editor of Sonic the Hedgehog, and he’s

looking for new people,’ so he gave me his number and I called him up,” Yardley recalls.

After that day, his whole life changed for the better. He had finally realized his dream; he would be able to draw for a living. “[It was] the hand of God,” Yardley says when asked how he fell into his career. “I think that this is exactly what God wants me to be doing.”

The first publications of Sonic the Hedgehog were printed when he was only in high school, but those issues impacted Yardley immensely.

Scott Shaw, the artist for those beginning issues, became a huge influence for Yardley.

“He always signs his name with an exclamation point, and I read those books over and over, and I really loved his cartooning style,” Yardley says. “I really really liked it, so I stole his exclamation point.”

He has been signing his name with that exclamation point ever since. Even throughout high school and college, Yardley’s name was always punctuated with that telling signature. Yardley’s name still appears in every issue with the exclamation point.

Sonic the Hedgehog comic book first debuted in 1992 as a four part mini-series and has been going strong ever since.

is one of the longest running licensed comic books, and Yardley is thrilled to be a part of that history.

Throughout his career he has worked on various artistic projects. Along with Nate Bowden, he created comic books Nate and Steve as well as Riding Shotgun. In addition to drawing Sonic the Hedgehog, Yardley has also written several issues, and he has drawn almost every issue of the Sonic Universe comic as well.

Despite his many achievements as a comic book artist, he still says his best achievement has nothing to do with his career. “I’m really more proud of the family I have than my work,” says Yardley. With his wife Megan, they have five children, Desirea, Preston, Tessa, Archer and Reid. He claims his family as his proudest accomplishment.

His children love that their dad draws Sonic, and Yardley likes to be the “go-to” parent for all things artistic. “They love it,” he says. “They’re always wanting me to draw for them.”

Though his job affords him the opportunity to be able to work from home, Yardley says it can also be one of the challenges of his job. “Staying awake and keeping on task—it’s difficult to work at home and keep yourself going all the time,” he says.

For every issue, each page takes him approximately four to six hours to complete, which equates to at least eighty hours of drawing time for each issue. Even though it can be a challenge, Yardley realizes that he is blessed to have his passion and his career be one and the same. He recently achieved the milestone of having drawn over two thousand pages of Sonic the Hedgehog comics.

He is self-motivated, and he says he has never had a lack of encouragement from his friends and family. As far back as high school,

his classmates would joke that he shouldn’t forget them when he became famous. “My family has never said ‘you’re wasting your time.’ They’ve always said ‘go for it,’” says Yardley. “No one has ever discouraged me, and I’ve always striven to succeed.”

The best advice he could give an upcoming artist who wants to follow in his footsteps would be to practice. A lot. “Get a sketch book and draw everything you see,” he advises.

“Especially things that are difficult.” One of the most helpful things he learned at SCAD was to simply fill out sketchbooks with drawings of anything and everything.

He maintains that even though it is a tough field to get into, it is possible if someone wants it badly enough. “Don’t wait for someone to pay you to do it,” he says. “Just get out there and do it yourself. If the work is good enough to be seen, someone will see it.

It happened to me.”

Yardley would eventually like to explore other mediums to express his creativity. “I’d like to write a novel at some point,” he says.

He loves to read, and he already has some fantasy stories in mind. He has proven that he is adept at writing story lines as well as illustration, and he would like to keep pushing himself.

No matter where his path takes him, Tracy Yardley admits that he has the job of his dreams. “I’m very happy to be doing what I’m doing,” he says. “I’m very thankful to God for giving me this life that I have and the opportunities that I’ve had.” He has accomplished what few artists are able to do; he has made his passion his career, and he is grateful every day. And that’s worth an exclamation point!

This is My

Hangout!

E

veryone calls it the Clyo Junkyard,” says Danny Harden with a smile. He’s talking about his own place, and he seems proud of that fact. The truth is – he’s a happy man. He’s a collector, and he has 110 acres, and that’s plenty of room to store any piece of memorabilia that he wants to buyand he’s bought plenty. But his place is far from ‘junky’. He’s turned his private piece of farmland into a personal living history museum.

“I’m interested in history,” says Harden simply, and that’s how it all started. “I first bought at yard sales, picking up collectible things. Someone gave me an old building, and I moved it here. I just turned it into a country store, and we started collecting stuff.” His store is authentic inside and out, and it’s filled with all kinds of memorabilia, but they are not for sale. “If I found five of the same thing I’ve still got them!” he says. “They’re all fun things.

“Collecting – it’s like an addiction!” says Harden, and it seems that his wife, Brenda, shares his feelings. “We go to Atlanta ‘junkin’ shopping’ one week-end every month, and the dirtier the place, the better. If you can trip over it and fall over it – that’s the kind of place I like!” “ They don’t always agree on what they should buy. Brenda will say, ‘Why would you like something junky like that?’

And I’ll say, ‘You’ve got to look beyond the rust.’” When he gets his latest treasure home, Harden does more that just ‘look beyond the rust’; he will completely refurbish it and put it in working condition.

Brenda has recently opened an antique store in Springfield. It’s called ‘Aunt Tinkies Antiques and Thrift Shop’ and it’s located next to the Mars Theater. Have any of their memorabilia and collectibles found their way into her shop? “Well, probably,” he says. “I’m starting to miss a few things, but it’s one of those things – you can’t take it with you.”

Harden was in the 165th Air National Guard.

He was the maintenance shop supervisor, and his experience in maintenance has been put to good use maintaining his own grounds and buildings, refurbishing his antiques, and adding to his living history museum. He retired in 2000, but “There is no retirement in this life,” he says. He works hard

each day, but it’s obvious that maintaining his antiques, and adding to his collection, is what keeps him motivated, but there’s more – “I like doing a lot of things!” he says. Most of those ‘things’ have to do with history. For example, he’s an active member of: - The Sons of Confederate Veterans (he takes part in reenactments) - The Old Effingham Days Festival Committee - The Board of Historical Effingham Society - The South East Georgia Blacksmith Guild - The North American Rail Car Operator Association (he once had three rail cars) - The Georgia Antique Engine Club (he was president) - The Steam Engine Club (he’s got three or four, but probably more) - And every Wednesday he volunteers at the Mighty 8th Museum to help restore a B-17 Bomber.

That’s more than enough to keep several people busy, but there’s more: he’s also learned trades to bring his history museum to life: - He grows sugar cane and makes cane syrup: “I have three acres of sugar cane, and I’ve been cooking syrup here for 28 years,” he said. “A friend named Trixie – he gave me my first truckload of sugar cane to plant and it’s been downhill ever since!” It’s a trade that’s been practiced in Harden’s family for years. His dad and granddad made cane syrup on their farm in Reidsville.

- He’s a blacksmith.

- He was a bee keeper, but enduring too many stings made him give up that project.

- He also tried his hand at raising racing pigeons: “I had about 300 racing pigeons, but I got rid of them,” he said. “They almost ate me out of house and home!”

So, what exactly makes Harden’s place a living history museum? – lots of things. The authentic country store was just the beginning of what has grown to be a small historic town. The grounds are manicured, the buildings are functional, and the streets are paved with grass, and well-maintained buildings and sheds house his antique farm equipment. There are a lot of old machines on his property and most are in working condition.

“This is my hangout,” says Harden.”

ings. “This is where we make the syrup,” he says, “This is my syrup furnace - we cook with wood, and the syrup is cooked in a 60 gallon syrup kettle.” That’s a lot of syrup!

To help with the syrup making and cleanup, there’s a small functional kitchen close by. It has a sink and a refrigerator, and a microwave, and those are just about the only modern things on the grounds. The walls of the kitchen are filled with lots of photos of friends, and of course, collectibles and memorabilia. The small kitchen has a table and chairs, and many friends have spent hours in that kitchen, enjoying fellowship. “It’s a good social connection,” Harden says.

Adjoining the building is a working blacksmith shop with a forge equipped with gigantic billows. “Now that thing will move some air now!” says Harden. Horse shoes are strewn about on the dirt floor, and a wood stove sits against a back wall. “That wood stove used to be in the old Clyo grammar school,” he says.

Heat radiates from it, and an old white enamel coffee pot sits on top, but it’s not just for looks. That stove heated the building and Harden’s coffee that morning.

An adjacent room is a woodworking shop. Harden takes a seat on a ‘shingle horse’ that he made. “It’s a vice with a pedal. It holds your wood for ya,” he explains as he gives a short demo, causing wood shavings to fall to the floor. Some of his wooden creations include yard rakes, pitchforks, and ‘Kid Wackers’. He picks up a pitchfork and points to its wooden tines. “I steam em’ and bend em,” he says – this isn’t an ordinary pitchfork - it’s a graceful work of art. An antique metal GE fan sits on a shelf. Harden flicks its switch and the fan begins cooling the room. His antiques are put to good use.

In a separate building Harden built a small kitchen that’s equipped with a wood stove and hand water pump. Old-time cooking demonstrations using the wood stove are given there.

His latest addition to his ‘old timey cooking’ demonstrations is from the ‘cowboy era.’ He’s building an authentic chuck wagon like the ones used on ‘Wagon Train.’ He’s building it according to specifications, and he plans to use it for cookouts.

Harden points to a collection of iron skillets and pots that will be used on his ‘chuck wagon cook outs.’ They look brand new, but “They’re old stuff,” he says. “I cleaned them up. I put lard on them and put them in the oven and baked them at about 450 degrees for about an hour to season the iron.” Does he know how to cook over a campfire with iron pots? “I’m gonna’ learn,” he says.

Antique farm equipment and antique machines are a huge part of Harden’s collection, and he has built long sheds to park them in. In that shed row you’ll find antique tractors and steam

engines, hay balers and thrashing machines, a gristmill, a peanut picker, a silage chopper, “and all sorts of other junk!’ says Harden.

There’s even a cotton gin that’s being repaired. Harden will crank them up and give demonstrations with them. “People enjoy it,” he says. “It’s a piece of history. People don’t get the opportunity to see some of this machinery working in operation.”

There are all sizes of steam engines sitting around, and they all work – just ask Danny – he’ll be happy to crank one up. “Sometimes we’ll be here for hours playing with the steam engines,” he says. He uncovers one and starts cranking it. Almost immediately it starts up, and it makes a delightful tune of popping and hissing, chugging along with hiccups, at times sounding like an engine that’s getting ready to backfire. Danny stands beside it, a happy look on his face, and it settles down to a rhythmic chug.

When he finds a machine he wants to buy, how does he transport it? – “Oh!” he says, “I drive a truck everywhere I go – you never know what you’ll find!”

“This is a piece of history to see,” he says. And it’s a great place to hang out!

veryone knows that the traditional Christmas colors are green, red and white. For merchants, however, black is perhaps the most important color of the season.

This would mean that enough silver and gold would come their way to get their bottom line out of the red.

Black Friday, the Friday following Thanksgiving, is called “Black” because it is the official start of the Christmas shopping season. The season is what puts retailers in the black. Unless you are in retail, you are probably not aware of how expensive it is to succeed and how slim margins can be. Most retailers operate at a loss throughout the year. The stay afloat because of the year end frenzy of holiday spending.

It is generally believed that Black Friday is the busiest shopping day of the year. But, that is not necessarily the truth.

According to the website, Misconception Junction, Black Friday usually doesn’t even make it into the top five. Typically, the “busiest shopping day” honors goes to the Saturday before Christmas. Or, if Christmas falls on a weekend, the Thursday and Friday before.

But Black Friday is definitely worth celebrating since it begins the season that makes a retailer’s year. Very few people get all of their Christmas shopping done in one day. It is the entire month (give or take a day or two) leading up to Christmas that makes the merchants so merry.

The whole “Black Friday” thing brings images of crazed shoppers barreling mindlessly through stores, trampling everyone and everything in their way, grabbing everything in sight, and contending with the other shoppers over the last great bargain!

But that is not the true holiday spirit. The true spirit can be found when shoppers are truly thoughtful about what they buy and where they buy it. That is why the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce holds a shop local campaign every year for our local merchants. This campaign is geared to encourage residents to spend their money in our local businesses.

With a national focus on shopping during the holiday season, our Chamber wants to raise awareness in our community on the importance of shopping local. Dollars spent in locally owned businesses have a tremendous impact on our community. These local monies create jobs, fund county services and provide for future development. Our small businesses are the backbone of our local economy.

The Chamber’s annual Shop Local Campaign is a very important event for local merchants. It is a way to raise consumer

awareness of what our local businesses have to offer.

Last year’s campaign was such a huge success, the Chamber has decided to use the same idea again...so, here we are.....back in “Elfingham.”

That’s right....Elfingham....not Effingham. Our county takes on a special name throughout the holiday shopping season. And, little elves are taking over our county by storm. These little elves are for Catie.

Catie Wilkins, young daughter to Tre and Jenny Wilkins, succumbed to brain cancer in 2007. Young Catie had an elf that was her constant companion during her 3 year battle with cancer.

The elves will be here again this year in our local stores. They will be on sale at local retail outlets. Ultimately, the plan is for the elves to take up residence with little children in Effingham and all around.

When the elves have gained a stronghold in the stores, they will draw curious shoppers from all over the county. In the process, hundreds of local residents will discover treasures right here in Effingham, allowing them to make holiday purchases at home in our own community!

Almost everything a person could want or need can be found right here in our own community. There are many unique and one-of-a-kind items that can’t be found anywhere else. Shoppers will understand there is no need to spend their money elsewhere.

Operation “Elfingham” kicks off on Sunday, November 18th at the annual Holiday Classic and Business Expo. The Classic will take place at Effigham County High School from noon to 4:00 pm.

There will be entertainment from local singers and dancers. The 4-H club will be providing a traditional Thanksgiving meal and there will be many booths showcasing area businesses.

The elves are called “Elves from Catie” and they will be set up at the Chamber booth during the Classic. These elves are great fun for children of all ages. Many of the elves are purchased to be given to sick children in pediatirc hospitals around the country.

Five dollars form every elf purchase goes to CURE Childhood Cancer.

Chamber Director Rick Lott said, “We had a very successful shop local campaign last year. We are striving to make it even better than before. Our main goal is for our merchants to do well and for more of our county residents to get used to the idea of shopping local.”
