endrick Joshua has overcome plenty of hurdles during his high school track career. The Richmond Hill High (RHHS) senior won the state title in the 300-meter hurdles last season and is ranked among the top high schoolers in the country and top 20 in the world.

One hurdle he did not face was deciding where to attend college on a track scholarship. Offered an athletic ride by all the schools in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), Joshua signed with the only school he ever considered - the University of Georgia.

“I’ve always liked Georgia since I was little,” said Joshua, who grew up in Savannah before moving to Richmond Hill and attending RHHS starting as a freshman. “I was planning to go there. It was the first school to offer me a scholarship. I was overly excited when I got the offer.”

Joshua took the fast track, both literally and figuratively, to earn a scholarship to Georgia. It all started with a talent and inclination for running.

Naturally fast, Joshua was a running back and wide receiver in football. He started playing at the age of 6 and continued through his freshman year at Richmond Hill High. When he broke his wrist as a sophomore, Kendrick, who also was competing in track, decided to focus on the latter sport and in particular the hurdles, an event he had discovered as a freshman.

“I was bored running on flat surfaces,” said Kendrick, who has also competed in the 60-, 100- , 200- and 400-meter races. “I wanted something new.”

Relying on his athletic ability and a talent for progressing faster than others, Joshua quickly made his mark in the hurdles. He placed on the podium in the 300 hurdles his first two years before winning the state title as a junior.

Joshua has a personal best time of 35.9 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles and wants to break the high school record of 34.8 seconds. He said form is the biggest factor in that distance. Remarking his speed is “up there” in the state and nation, Joshua said the 400-meter hurdles, which is the only event college teams feature in that discipline, is more of a stamina event. “My endurance is improving,” he said. Although the hurdles are his best event, Joshua has showcased his his speed in the 60-, 100-, and 200-meter races with respective times of 6.82 seconds, 10.35 seconds and 21.38 seconds.

Joshua’s weekly training sessions include running 250 to 500 meters at 80- to 90% speed, weight workout, and running 10 to 120 meters at full speed. He describes it as a job he hates, allowing him to do something he truly loves.

“I use winning as a motivation for training,” he explained.

“I love to win.”

Outside of running the hurdles, Joshua enjoys golf and photography. He remarked he doesn’t go out much.

Joshua said he misses football a lot and believes he could have played in college, adding he prefers competing as an individual rather than on a team.

Brittany Joshua said her son has always been a gifted athlete, starting at a young age. “He was the kid who picked up anything physical really fast,” she said. “He was always fast and competitive at every sport.”

Brittany attributes Kendrick’s rapid improvement as a hurdler to hard training, willingness to listen, and never backing down from a challenge. Remarked Brittany: “He loves a challenge.”

Those qualities have led to outstanding times and a number of medals. Although proud of these accomplishments, Brittany said she’s most impressed with the way Kendrick pushes to be better even after a goal is met.

One of those goals was to play any sport in college but not just any college. “He has always been a UGA fan,” Brittany said. “Watching him sign, you could see how proud he was of himself and that made me prouder.”

Given the support for the University of Georgia throughout the state, it’s not surprising Joshua received a “whole bunch” of positive feedback at school and in the local community when he announced his decision to www.BryanCountyMagazine.com | January/February 2026

become a Bulldog. If he hadn’t signed with Georgia, Joshua said his second choice would have been Texas Tech, alma mater for professional hurdler Caleb Dean and a fellow competitor in a race.

“We spoke before the race and it went well,” Joshua said.

“He runs pretty smoothly and is a cool guy to watch.”

Levi Sybert, director of track and field and cross country at Richmond Hill High, has coached Joshua since his freshman year. He said Heather Sybert has served as Joshua’s spring coach, and a number of hurdles coaches have worked with him during that time. According to Levi, Joshua, befitting his performance on the track, has made huge strides as a hurdler.

“Kendrick started out as just a brute force talent over the hurdles,” said Levi, who has coached at Richmond Hill High since 2007. “He was able to shift his mind and become a master of the art of hurdling while having brute force strength. That’s what has made him so incredibly successfultalent and intention.”

Athletes from all sports have to make the adjustment from high school to college. It’s an even greater challenge when going to a school such as Georgia, which competes in the demanding Southeast Conference and typically recruits the top athletes. The stories are many of athletes who dominated in high school but were unable to repeat that success in 12

college. Levi remains confident Joshua will make the transition a smooth one.

“Kendrick should do great at Georgia,” Levi said. “He is very self motivated and as long as he stays on path to what his true intentions are, he will be extremely successful to his desires.”

Then there’s the even more ambitious goal of qualifying for the Olympics, being named one of three individuals in his event out of a pool of the best college athletes in the country. Once again, Levi said he believes Joshua is up to the challenge.

“I believe he has enough meat left on the bone for that to be an obtainable goal for Kendrick,” Levi said. “That is because he has not truly challenged himself in practice as he challenges himself in competition. If you can put that last critical element together with an elite training group at Georgia, it’s going to be an amazing ride for him.”

If this year is any indication, Joshua’s ride can already be categorized as thrilling. Competing as a member of the Coastal Georgia Track Team, he won the men’s 400-meter hurdles at the USA Track & Field U-20 Championships at the historic Hayward Field, University of Oregon with a time of 50.53.

That performance capped off a junior year in which Joshua captured the 6A state title in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 36.33 seconds and followed that up by winning the

Meet of Champions in Atlanta. His time of 35.94 was the second fastest in the nation in 2025.

Isaiah and Belinda Taylor have coached Joshua on the Coastal Georgia Track Team since he was 9 years old. “He is a very efficient hurdler,” Isaiah said. “What makes him special is his speed between the hurdles, and his athleticism allows him the ability to snap his trail leg down faster than his competitors.”

Like Sybert, Isaiah expects big things from Joshua in college and beyond. “I believe he will win the SEC 400-meter hurdles conference championship and qualify for the NCAA final,” he said. “I really believe he will make the Olympic team in 2028.”

Joshua has a personal best time of 50.5 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles. To qualify for the Olympics, he has to have a time of 48 to 49 seconds. That gives him several years to cut two to three seconds off his fastest time by “training at a higher level.”

As with earning a scholarship to Georgia, Joshua has had a longtime dream of representing his country in the Olympics.

“I’ve wanted to compete in the Olympics since I started running,” Joshua said. “It would mean everything. It would be a big accomplishment if I make the team.”

Carol Dotson, Joshua’s aunt, said her nephew is only a few seconds away from the winning hurdles time at the Olympics and he’s just starting out. She noted he’s always been determined and wants to be No. 1 in everything he does.

Dotson described Joshua as a very good hearted, focused individual, adding the family’s glad he’ll be attending Georgia.

“It’s only four hours away,” Dotson said. “The family can go there and he can visit us. Go Dawgs!” ■

With a menu broad enough to satisfy even the pickiest eaters, we set out to sample as much as possible in a single visit. We ordered two appetizers each, a sandwich, dinner entrées, specialty beverages, a beer, dessert, and still managed to leave completely satisfied.

We started with crispy Brussels sprouts tossed in pesto, bacon, and Parmesan—bright, salty, and hard to resist. The fried green tomatoes, topped with creamy goat cheese and a punchy remoulade, delivered just the right kick. Chili cheese fries rounded out our starters— indulgent and nostalgic in all the best ways. Sensible diners might have stopped there, but we pressed on.

The roasted mushroom soup was a standout. Unlike the usual cream-based versions, this soup showcased the deep, almost-sweet flavor that comes from roasting. It was rich and layered without feeling heavy. We shared a salad as a brief nod to health before turning to the main courses.

My dining companion, a shrimp-and-grits devotee, ordered without hesitation. When the entrée arrived, conversation stopped. The first bite said it all—creamy, savory, and comforting, it’s the kind of dish that keeps locals coming back.

I chose the Lemon Pepper Chicken Ancient Grains Bowl, featuring brown and red rice, red quinoa, black barley, kale, sautéed red onions, and roasted mushrooms, all topped with grilled lemon-pepper chicken and fresh green onions. Each bite offered something different—warm grains, a burst of citrus, and a satisfying balance of textures. Light yet filling, it was a dish worth lingering over.

Finding Magic in the Madness of Motherhood

Grace, Giggles, & a Little Chemical Help

They say laughter is the best medicine.

And sure, laughter helps, but I also take the real kind. Prescribed, tiny, life saving medicine. Because as it turns out, motherhood is a lot to handle with just caffeine and coping mechanisms.

Let’s be honest: motherhood is beautiful, but it’s also exhausting in a way no one really warns you about. Not the kind of tired that sleep fixes, the kind that sits in your bones.

You can love your life, your kids, your husband, your dog, and still wake up some mornings feeling like you’re running on an emotional Windows 95 system that keeps freezing.

The Pressure to Be Fine There’s this unspoken rule that moms have to hold it all together. We’re expected to be grateful, patient, creative, nurturing, productive, fit, emotionally stable, and available for class cupcakes, all at once.

When I had my first child, I thought I just needed to push through the hard parts. I thought maybe I wasn’t praying enough, or drinking enough water, or doing enough yoga.

(Spoiler: I was doing none of those things. I was, however, crying in the shower and Googling “can you die from exhaustion.”)

It took me years to realize what was actually happening wasn’t weakness, it was my brain waving a little white flag. So, I got help. Real, honest help. And one day, I swallowed that first little pill that promised balance.

And you know what? It didn’t make me less “me.”

It made me the version of me I had been trying so hard to claw my way back to.

The Myth of the Perfect Mom Brain We’re told to “take care of ourselves,” but no one talks about how complicated that can be. There’s a strange shame that comes with admitting you might need more than a walk or a podcast. But the truth is, you can’t self care your way out of a chemical imbalance.

I used to think antidepressants were for “other people.”

The ones who couldn’t handle life. Now I know they’re for people exactly like me, who handle so much life that sometimes we just need a little extra serotonin to keep up.

I still have days where I’m juggling so much that I forget where I set my coffee (and my sanity). But I also have days where I laugh so hard I cry, cook dinner while dancing in the kitchen, and feel like I’m living in color again. And that’s worth every doctor visit, every adjustment, every ounce of vulnerability it took to ask for help.

The Grace in Getting Help I used to think being strong meant doing it all myself.

Now I know real strength looks like sitting in a doctor’s office and saying, “I’m not okay.” It looks like finally accepting that taking medication isn’t giving up, it’s choosing to show up.

It’s funny, though..when I started being honest about it, so many other moms quietly admitted, “Me too.” It’s like we’ve all been taking turns pretending we’re fine while silently Googling side effects.

Maybe the strongest thing we can do for each other is stop pretending.

A Little Humor and a Lot of Hope I still lose my cool, still run late, still forget spirit day and the permission slip and occasionally my own password to life.

The meds didn’t turn me into a zen goddess, they just helped turn down the static.

Now, instead of running on chaos and caffeine alone, I run on chaos, caffeine, and a carefully calibrated dose of Celexa.

And honestly? It’s working for me.

So if you’re reading this and you’ve ever felt like you’re failing because you need help, please know you’re not alone.

Whether your self care looks like journaling, therapy, or a tiny pink pill, it’s still self care. You’re still the mom who shows up, even if you needed a little help getting there.

Because at the end of the day, motherhood isn’t about being perfect.

It’s about being present.

And sometimes, presence requires prescription strength.

hilip Davis never planned to be a novelist. For nearly a decade, a half-finished manuscript sat untouched on his computer. But when he finally returned to it, the passion he uncovered set him on a path that has carried him through three books, a traditional publishing contract, and a newfound identity as a mystery writer rooted in Georgia.

“I don’t think I’ll ever forget it,” he said. “It was the summer of 2014, and I was just bored out of my mind.

I opened up a Word document and started putting thoughts down. I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I probably put down 5,000 to 6,000 words in a few weeks, and for the next eight years, I didn’t open that Word document.”

Life, work, and everyday demands got in the way. But the story never left him, and the spark that was lit that day quietly flickered in the background of his thoughts— until the day his wife Ruby encouraged him to revisit those pages.

“One night in 2022, I was sitting there, and my wife was like, ‘You know what, you’re bored, why don’t you revisit the novel you forgot about?’” he said.

From that point, the little spark burst into flame. In five or six months, he finished what he had started eight years earlier.

Finding a Publisher With the final chapter written, it was time to find a traditional publisher. He could have gone with selfpublishing, which has become more mainstream in recent years. Pride kept him from that route, even after dozens of rejection letters.

His determination eventually led him to Auctus Publishers, a Philadelphia-based company that took a chance on a first-time author.

“It’s a blessing,” he said. “They took an option on an unpublished and unknown guy, and that was really exciting.”

Stories Rooted in Georgia Davis’s novels blend classic suspense with a distinctly Georgia sense of place.

“They are murder mysteries, my first two, and now I have a third one that is with the publisher,” he said. “The third one is not so much a murder mystery, but a mystery in and of itself.”

All three books are set in Georgia. The first one starts in Brunswick and takes readers on a suspense-filled journey around the world. The second one carries the storyline across the United States.

While his first two books fit squarely in the murder mystery genre, Davis’s third novel touches on a topic in the headlines: human trafficking.

“I wasn’t by any means trying to glamorize it, but just trying to show how human trafficking impacts not only those poor people that are directly impacted and their families, but also a gentleman who was unknowingly trafficking individuals, and how he and his law enforcement friends set out to take down the syndicate,” Davis said.

To capture the reality behind the fiction, Davis turned to both research and personal connections. One of his most valuable resources came from closer to home.

“I have a nephew who is a deputy down in South Georgia,” he said. “He had encountered criminals who were trafficking humans, and he was an excellent source of information.”

Writing Without a Map Though Davis’s stories are deeply Georgian, he’s also drawn on his travels to enrich his novels. His wife is from the Philippines, and he’s visited there several times. He’s traveled through Europe, Scotland, the United Kingdom, and Japan—experiences that help him create vivid, believable settings.

Writing mysteries, Davis said, wasn’t an accident.

“They’re just something that has always been my passion,” he explained. “I love mysteries of any sort. It’s the genre I’ve chosen to write.”

Unlike many authors, Davis doesn’t rely on strict outlines. He begins with a clear beginning and an envisioned ending, then lets the middle unfold as inspiration strikes.

“I’m probably not your traditional writer who starts with an outline,” he said. “I might jot down notes in a separate document, but most of the time I just write as it comes to mind. I may write twenty pages in a day, then go six months without writing a single word.”

That flexible approach leaves plenty of room for discovery and surprises.

“It gives me a lot of room for plot twists,” he said. “I enjoy a good plot twist. I like the old Perry Mason shows, Andy Griffith … anything with a twist.”

Even classic television feeds his imagination. He recently revisited the George Peppard detective series Banacek on Prime Video, watching every episode and taking note of the clever twists and surprises that continue to inspire his own stories.

Family as Inspiration Behind Davis’s writing is the steady encouragement of his wife, Ruby.

“She is just what you hear about, the prototypical 100% support for whatever endeavor I’ve chosen to tackle,” he said.

“In her mind, she’s probably thinking, ‘This is not a good idea, Philip,’ but she sincerely supports whatever endeavor.”

Davis said his wife seems to have an intuitive sense for when he needs a lift. Without being asked, she’ll stop by, offer a smile, and say something simple like, “You’re doing a good job. We’re proud of you. Keep pushing.”

Those moments, he said, mean more than she probably realizes. People tell him all the time what he already knows— she’s his rock, and his biggest fan.

His love of storytelling also comes from his mother.

“I can remember my mom and I sitting down when I was a young child and not able to read yet,” he said. “She was an avid reader, and still is an avid reader. At 83 years old, she would sit and read to me for hours on end.”

Davis said his mother first introduced him to reading the way many children of his generation began—with Dr. Seuss and other childhood favorites. But she didn’t stop there.

Whatever she happened to be reading at the time, she’d share with him, regardless of genre. Mystery, romance, adventure— if a story captured her attention, she’d read it aloud. That time together, he said, is where his love of stories began.

“My brother’s the real reader in the family,” he added with a laugh. “He goes through at least two books a month. If I read one a year, I’ve done well.”

Still, the foundation was set early, and that love of storytelling stuck.

A Writer’s Routine Davis may not read as voraciously as some authors, but he has found a rhythm and a process that works for his writing.

“When I start back writing, it’s two hours a day when I get home in the afternoon, and my Saturday afternoons and my Sunday afternoons consist of sitting in front of the computer,” he said. “I don’t want to lose the ideas that I have because I’m my own worst enemy by not putting these thoughts in an outline form on a Word document.”

When Davis isn’t writing, he works for Konecranes in Savannah, sourcing hard-to-find parts for overhead cranes, which involves a little detective work. When his sales team is searching for a part and coming up empty, they turn to Davis.

“Thank goodness for Google, but Google doesn’t always save you,” he said.

Born and raised in Charleston, Jared discovered his passion for fitness at 15 years old during a high‑school weightlifting class. That led him into martial arts and track, before finding his true focus in strength training and overall wellness.

A Childhood Rooted in Animals Maria’s connection to animals began long before she made it her profession.
