Spring is in the air! It sounds like a cliché! But, it is the truth. It’s a time of year when people start to come out of their winter shells and outdoor adventures become a part of everyday life.

This season has definitely started off with a bang for me. I have found myself rather busy with a list of social functions and gatherings. The beautiful weather has been a tremendous asset and has given me a sense of rejuvenation.

These last weeks have been a flurry of dinners, parties, meetings and all types of gatherings. It all started in February with the Film Festival festivities and hasn’t quite slowed from there.

My social calendar has been on overload, which I certainly don’t mind. It makes for some fun times with friends and business colleagues and it gives me an opportunity to meet new and fascinating folks along the way.

I would like to share a recent experience I had, one of those rare times when you meet someone new and feel like you have been a part of their lives forever.

One of our writers, Mary Ellen Thompson, recently invited me to have lunch with her and some friends she had visiting from London, England.

What a delight it was to me to have her extend the invitation….but an even bigger delight to meet these two ladies!

I met the ladies at Southern Graces at the Beaufort Inn. The restaurant was packed that day.

There was not a table to be found. Just as we started to make our way out to find another location, the owner of Southern Graces, Bethany Hewitt stopped to say hello. She offered us a table out in the court yard, which we graciously accepted.

As we made our journey through the Inn to the back courtyard, conversation had already begun. By the time we were seated at our table, I found myself in a state of enjoyment as Jane and Jenny treated me like I was someone they had known all their Julie Hales, PUBLISHER lives.

We chit chatted for an hour or so. Conversation varied from work to weather to England to the finer points of the South. It was an absolutely lovely time, and I hated for it to end. As we parted ways that day, I had a smile on my face and a heart full of warmth…and a bit of sadness that I would never see these extraordinary people again.

That sadness was short lived, as I was later invited to join them on Friday night for dinner and an evening out to listen to Beaufort’s very own Marshland Party Band. On this occasion, I had the pleasure of meeting both of these fine lady’s “better halves.” I must say, the gentleman were just as delightful! We shared a wonderful evening of fun!

Before the evening was over, I would receive my third invitation to visit with them on their last night in the states. So, back on Sunday evening I went. What a great time I had with my dear friends!

I learned so much from them about England and their lives there. I learned of their professions, their homes and their families. They have been to our beautiful Beaufort many times and love it here. Not only did they have wonderful stories to share about England, they also had stories to share with me about Beaufort as well.

In our conversations, they learned I am from Georgia. Not only did I get the usual comments about Southern Belles, I was also cast with the glorious name of “Miss Peachy!” I am sure this new name will grace me for many years to come.

With all that I learned from my experience with them, the most precious thing I take with me is the warm feeling I have from having had the honor of meeting them. Although an ocean lies between us, I feel certain this will not be the only time we share. So, until that day, thank you Jane, Arnold, Jenny and Graham....you gave me a wonderful experience I will treasure forever! And thank you, Mary Ellen, for sharing these wonderful folks!

Finding Beaufort’s Magnetic Lure It’s a wrap! There are no words more glorious in our business than those.

With yet another issue out the door, and now in your hands, I can’t help but think in my mind, ‘what just happened?’ With the April/May issue now on the streets that means we are already working on the June/July issue.

What?

For us, that means we are looking at the halfway point of 2011. The notion that summer and the Water Festival will be here soon is still bewildering to me. Despite, I am ready for a summer of adventure! Quite frankly, I think we all are.

With a solid year and a half now under our belts, it feels that we are hitting our stride. Heck, we’re a mere few months from our second anniversary, and that in itself is a testament. It’s a testament of your overwhelming support and encouragement, along with our commitment to bring our readers and advertisers a classy and sophisticated magazine to call your own.

There are many words that define Beaufort Lifestyle. To think of a few off of the top of my head I would say it is art, entertainment and also an opportunity.

The opportunity is that it reaches and informs so many people in and around the Beaufort area. More importantly, it has garnered the interest of our other two publications in Georgia. That’s right, Beaufort Lifestyle has its place in Georgia as well, and folks there are curiously reading about Beaufort.

Beaufort is still yet one of the South’s best kept secrets, however more and more people are becoming increasingly acquainted with what the Beaufort area has to offer. Yes, the festivals and coastal Low Country Lifestyle attracts them, and once they visit, they are hooked. But, there is something else attracting people here.

Call me crazy, but I believe there is some sort of cosmic force that leads people here. If I had a dime for every time someone told me they came to live in Beaufort by throwing a dart at the map, I would be a very wealthy individual. I get such a kick every time someone tells me that they found Beaufort this way (you all know who you are).

racious and softspoken, Scott Allen Gibbs was Beaufort born and raised.

Among his many talents and accomplishments, he is a musician and vocalist: “I have

had no training, it’s all God given.” And “God given” is an apt description because Scott Gibbs sings like an angel. I first heard Scott sing with Aunt Pearlie Sue’s Gullah Kinfolk in “A Gullah Kinfolk Christmas” and then again at a solo concert in the Tabernacle Baptist Church. Both times I was mesmerized by the mellifluous sound of his voice. “My joy is singing,” he says, which is a very good thing because to listen to him is a transforming experience.

Scott started singing in church at the age of six. His mother was a singer in a gospel group and he went on tour with her around the region. With easy going charm, Scott recounts

his childhood dream, “As a child I wanted to be a movie star. My favorite movies were The Wizard of Oz and My Fair Lady, I loved Bette Davis movies, musicals, happy things. I love old movies!”

Scott contracted polio at the age of four; “It never hindered me from doing anything. No one ever treated me differently.”

Scott sings not only with the Gullah Kinfolk, but also with The Fellowship Concert Choir of Beaufort and Gospel Friends of Beaufort.

He is the piano player for two churches, Mt. Sinai and St. Paul Baptist Churches, teaches piano, and oversees the music ministry of both churches. Scott is also a member of The

A graduate of South Carolina State University with a B.S. degree in Business Administration, for the past twenty-seven years Scott has worked for the South Carolina Department of Social Services, first as an Economic Service Specialist, and more recently as a Benefits Integrity Claims Specialist. In one more year he will be eligible for retirement, which if he so chooses, would finally give him some free time, about which now he says, “I don’t have a lot of.” Although he has traveled with his singing SCOTT and other civic commitments, GIBBS “I have never been on a real vacation without an agenda, I Scott Gibbs playing the piano. don’t know what I would do!”

With dedication to his community, Scott is involved in numerous humanitarian pursuits. According to Anita Singleton Prather, “Scott is an unsung hero. No one knows how much he does for the community. He has an awesome talent; he is always willing to lend a helping hand; he is loyal to his word - if he says it, it’s done! Scott is very humble, as talented as he is. He is an inspiration to me.” nspired by Carrie B. Major, and Scott’s early love of singing and theatre, is what directed him to become involved with Ms. Major when she founded Carae’s Lowcountry Modeling, an organization of which Scott has been president for twenty-five years. Carae’s began by putting on fashion shows which started with adults, and then expanded to children as young as three years old. These shows “really helped with their self-esteem.” It is now an umbrella organization for the annual Beaufort County Youth Conference, a one day event which will be held on September 24 this year, where middle and high school students choose the topics, and plan the workshops on such issues as drug and alcohol use, as well as teen pregnancy. The students are part of the process; they design the t-shirts, plan the lunches. About three hundred students attend the conference which provides the opportunity for youths to openly address and discuss issues that are of importance to them and their futures.

Son of Leroy and Phoebe Gibbs, Scott was raised by his step mother, Rebecca Gadsden Gibbs, after his mother passed away. His immediate family consists now of his father, brother Leroy Gibbs, Jr. and his sister, Patricia Gibbs Doe. The Gibbs’ extended family is large, with their roots in Walterboro, SC. The trip he is especially anticipating is to Washington, DC Every two years they have a family reunion. It is an occasion that Scott is very much looking forward to; his face lights up as he says, “I’m trying to get on the program to sing. I may get to meet the President!”

As a life member of the esteemed Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Xi Gamma Lambda Chapter, Scott is the South Carolina District Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant Coordinator and serves on the National Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant Committee. “The Miss Black & Gold Scholarship Pageant is a national program of Alpha Phi Alpha. Young collegiate ladies compete on a campus, district, regional, and national level for the prestigious title of Miss Black and Gold. The pageant recognizes and awards women who exemplify superiority in academics, leadership, community service, and talent, but places a strong emphasis on scholarship and scholastic achievement” (from their website). Scott sings “You Are So Beautiful” to the winner of the pageant. lpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has a significant and interesting history. According to their Southern Region website: “Since its founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-Americans and people of color around the world.

Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country... The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially. The Jewel Founders and early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha’s principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character and the uplifting of humanity. Alpha Phi Alpha chapters were established at other colleges and universities, many of them historically black institutions, soon after the founding at Cornell. The first Alumni Chapter was established in 1911.

True to its form as the ‘first of firsts,’ Alpha Phi Alpha has been interracial since 1945.”

Another project close to Scott’s heart is the just completed recording of the New Testament of the Gulllah Bible on CD, on which the scriptures are read in dialect by several

notable members of the community including Scott reading the part of Pontius Pilate. “De Nyew Testament, The New Testament in Gullah Sea Island Creole”, was created by The Sea Island Translation Team, in cooperation with Wyecliff Bible Translators, published by The American Bible Society in 2005.” (Quoted from frontispiece.) Although reading the translation is interesting, actually hearing it brings to life the richness of the Gullah culture.

Dedicated and ever courteous, Scott has won many honors and awards. Most recently he was honored with a Humanitarian Award for Distinguished Achievement in Community Service, presented by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Committee of the Beaufort County Ministerial Alliance. His philosophy of life is “Always believe and trust in Jesus Christ, because he will always direct your path.” His wisdom is: “I don’t do anything I don’t enjoy doing.”

GinETTING touch with NATURE

What hosts over 20,000 visitors a year and boasts a turtle mascot named Buddy? That would be the Hunting Island State Park Nature Center, located at the entrance to Paradise Pier, at the very end of the park just before the Fripp Island Bridge. Long a favorite among locals and visitors, the nature center recently underwent a facelift and has added exciting new technology, courtesy of Nature Center Specialist Jennifer Milbert.

I

n September 2010, Jennifer was awarded the “You Excel” Award for “Excellence

in performance above and beyond regular duties and responsibilities by the South Carolina State Parks Commission. Interpretive Ranger Mitch Helms nominated her primarily for her innovative project involving four user friendly touch screen learning centers placed throughout the Nature Center.

With help from the Friends of Hunting Island, Jennifer was able to obtain the touch screens, one for each habitat in the park. Jennifer utilized her background in computers and graphic arts to design and create the PowerPoint presentation at each station.

With screens entitled “In Touch with Nature,” visitors are invited to “touch the image in the screen to explore our habitats and the creatures that reside here.” At the “Carolina Reef” station real beach sounds accompany photos of creatures found at the park, such as the “Featherduster Worm” and when the image is touched a larger picture and fun fact pops up.” This is a way for us to draw in the younger visitors who have grown up learning from a computer screen,” says Ranger Mitch Helms. Jennifer agrees, “I really enjoyed

Early Love of Nature Jennifer was born in East Point GA, and grew up in Massachusetts and Maryland. She says, “Growing up my family spent many camping trips for our vacation time, we even saved to go to Walt Disney World and camped with the bugs to see Mickey! Skyline Drive was always our favorite destination. Camping was an affordable vacation. Mom always looked for the State Parks, she liked their clean facilities.

This is not to say that is all that Jennifer has accomplished at the Nature Center. Hired a year ago, Jennifer says, “I wanted to organize the center so that each habitat was highlighted, and Mitch was great about letting me move things around and make positive changes in each exhibit.” The Marine Debris exhibit is a good example of something that appeals to young visitors, allowing the staff to bring about a “teachable moment.” Common items such as plastic water bottles are attached to a beach exhibit, inviting children to touch and pick up, with explanations as to how long (if ever) it takes for each item to decay. Another favorite is the shell box, a large box filled with stationary shells that are covered with sand; children can take the attached brushes and ‘discover’ the hidden shells. “They love it!” says Jennifer, “There is always a pile of sand to sweep up at the end of the day but that is what it is all about, having children being excited about learning

Always an Artist Jennifer received an Associate’s Degree (AA) in Interior Design, with a minor in Fine Arts, graduating on the Presidents List. ”I was blessed to work in conjunction with three other designers on the Baltimore Sympathy Orchestra Decorator’s Show House, and designing two rooms on the first floor was such an honor, “ she says, ”I love the process of interior design.”

Utilizing her graphics arts knowledge she started a graphics company in Maryland. “I owned my graphics company, Drakonscales, from 2000 to 2009. I created power points, and provided conference and media support as well as worked with publishing companies creating technical illustrations for textbooks,” Jennifer says, “Unfortunately due to the downturn in the economy most of my clients are no longer doing business but I still continue work with a few remaining clients, National Parks Conservation in Washington, DC being one.”

Family Life Jennifer is married to Tyson Milbert and is the mother of two children, Sara, 23 years old, and Scott who is 21 and in the Navy. “In 2008, my youngest son went to boot camp. We were living in Maryland and our house was so unbearably lonely, that we prepped it for sale and sold it in five days. My husband Tyson found Beaufort with a map and a dart. So we took the

plunge. We wanted a simple life and we found it in Beaufort.

Beaufort gave us a warm welcome from the very first day!”

Jennifer and Tyson enjoy fishing at the Broad River Pier and cooking together for their neighbors. “Having a son deployed gives me a different perspective on our military neighbors, there is nothing Tyson and I enjoy more than feeding them a home cooked meal and helping out wherever we can.”

Jennifer is always busy, “I love working on cars, and I am hoping to find a VW Thing this fall to restore. It was a passion I shared with my children. My daughter and I would work on her Firebird together and when my son bought his ‘87 Supra, which he still has, we worked together on it many times. Those were times I always treasured with my children. My son still has his friends call me to diagnose their car problems!”

Beautiful Day Jennifer looks out at the magnificence of the park and watches the visitors enjoying a day at the pier fishing and enjoying the warm weather. “I found the state park thinking my life would go in a different direction from my hectic graphic art life to a calm career. I hope to continue at Hunting Island because I just want to make a difference. I think the Nature Center has so much to offer, and the team effort we all have to make it an amazing experience for all visitors. It’s the best job in the park!”

The Blue Angels are coming to Beaufort and

will perform on April 30 and May 1, 2011 at the Marine Corps Naval Air Station. In F/A-18 jets, the synchronized flight demonstration is a dizzying sight to behold! At a cost of approximately $21 million each, the jets can reach speeds just under Mach 2, which is about 1,400 mph, almost twice the speed of sound.

We look forward to welcoming the Blue Angels to Beaufort this month and were fortunate to have the opportunity to talk to Blue Angel #3: Major Brent Stevens, age 34, from Knoxville, TN. How long have you been a pilot?

Yes, I live here with my wife and daughter.

What effect does being away so long have on your family?

In a regular operational unit you go on extended deployments from six to eight months, depending on what’s going on, or sometimes longer. In those types of scenarios your family cannot come with you, although you can still communicate with them. But while I’m on the team here with the Blue Angels, because we go to these different show sites, my wife and daughter can come to any of those shows that they choose, so that helps out a great deal.

Did you ever fly in combat?

I did. In 2007 I flew combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

What’s the difference between flying combat and flying in the Blue Angels?

They are two totally different things. In the combat operations we were flying we were supporting coalition forces on the ground, we were trying to keep them safe, trying to keep the denizens on the ground safe, trying to defeat the insurgents. The mission of the Blue Angels is that we’re here to represent all those members of the Marine Corps and the Navy and inspire that next generation to join the force, and ultimately replace us.

Did you ever land on a carrier at night?

Yes, absolutely. I’m obviously in the Navy Blue Angels but I’m a Marine pilot. The unique thing is that as a Marine

F/A-18 pilot, I was also attached to an aircraft carrier and the squadron that I was in operated from the USS Nimitz. (note: the USS Nimitz was named for Chief of Naval Operations, Chester W. Nimitz, founder of the Blue Angels) As part of that experience you’re going to land on the carrier both day, night, good weather and bad weather so I’ve had my share of all of that.

Which is more difficult, being in the Blue Angels or landing on a carrier at night?

Oh, man that’s a tough question but I would say landing on a carrier at night with any kind of bad weather causes more

anxiety than anything I would do in the Blue Angels.

Wow, you do a lot of things that would cause anxiety in the Blue Angels, I would think!

Yeah, that’s true; in a lot of the maneuvers we do fly close, but there’s just no way to describe landing on an aircraft carrier at night in bad weather. It’s a very white knuckle kind of experience.

You must have some kind of training for ejections?

In flight school, once you find out you’re going to fly jet aircraft, you go to different courses and they show you

What is the criteria for being a Blue Angel?

To be a Blue Angel you need to have a minimum of 1250 hours in jet aircraft. Beyond that you need to be in the right position in your career where you can make this work. Potential applicants will put together an application package, they’ll submit it to the team, and then those applicants will hang out with the team at different air shows. That will give us a chance to get to know them and they’ll get to know other members of the team. Then around the June, July time frame we’ll pick a series of finalists and we’ll bring them to Pensacola in between two of our shows and we’ll do different interviews and whatnot, and then after that process we’ll make the final selection of who we want for the team. proper body position, what you can expect from an ejection, and then as part of learning your aircraft you’ll learn all the ins and outs of how the seat works and how the parachute system works.

There’s an extensive amount of training, not just the ejection seat but also aviation physiology including water survival, land survival and things like that.

You’re in the Marine Corps, how many Marines fly with the Blue Angels?

Currently I am the only Marine that flies within what we call the Delta which is the six ship of F/A-18 aircraft. We do have a C-130 on the team and that is crewed by an all Marine crew. We have a number of enlisted members that comprise the rest of the crew of that aircraft, and within the squadron itself, we have anywhere from twelve to fifteen enlisted maintainers that are part of the team there and are Marines; so the Blue Angels itself is really a Navy and Marine Corps effort.

When did you decide you wanted to be a pilot?

That’s a hard question, all I know is I wanted to be a pilot before I can even remember when I wanted to be a pilot. I was very, very young – probably five or six years old and it’s interesting because no one in my family was a pilot, no one in my family was really in the military. What drew me to it, I’m not sure, but I knew from a very young age that all I ever wanted to do was be a fighter pilot and that’s the direction I was going to go.

How did you decide to join the Blue Angels?

The tour that I was on before this one, I was an instructor pilot in San Diego at the Marine Corps Air Station, and a couple of my friends were on the Blue Angels team. I learned a little more about the Blue Angels and thought that would be a real exciting next step in my career, and so I decided to apply for the team and the next thing I know, here I am.

Where did you do your basic training in the Marine Corps?

When I was in college I enlisted, so I did go to basic training in Parris Island, SC, in 1996. Once I got back from boot camp, I went back to college, finished my degree, went to officer candidate school and received my commission. Once you get finished with officer candidate school, you get commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. When you enter active duty you go to Basic School for six months, and from there I went on to flight school.

Have you been back to Beaufort since you were here for your basic training?

No, I have not been back. I think the last time I was in Beaufort was in 2002 – 2003 when I made a brief stopover, so it’s been a long time since I’ve been there.

Are you looking forward to coming back?

Absolutely. I can’t wait. In Naval aviation, Marine Corps aviation, it’s a small world so I’m looking forward to meeting up with some friends that I know that are out there. Ultimately I would like to do a service tour in Beaufort. I think that would be great.

What do you remember from when you were in Beaufort?

I think what I remember about Beaufort is that it had a really beautiful kind of old South feel to it which I really enjoyed being from Tennessee. And, there were the oaks with the Spanish moss, it was a really cool vibe. It was something that I could definitely relate to.

What are the different positions in the six plane

formation?

You have the Boss in plane #1. He’s the flight leader, he’s also the squadron commander. On the left wing is myself, Blue Angel 3; the formation will always be the same – the Boss will be leading, the 3 jet will always be on his left side and the 2 jet will always be on his right side. And then in the slot, which is beneath and between the 2 and 3 jets, will be the 4 jet, and then you have the solos which are out there doing their thing.

When they join up, we’re in a formation we call the Delta, in that case 5 will be on my left side, and 6 will be on the right side of the formation.

What happens if a pilot gets sick? Do you have an extra plane?

We do, we have extra planes, we generally take seven jets to a show site. We do not have an extra pilot because what we do requires so much training and so much time to do correctly and safely, that it’s just not feasible to have a back up pilot. If a pilot gets sick, we will simply do a demonstration minus one of the jets, and we’ll use the 4 pilot to balance the formation out, he will fill in where the missing jet is supposed to be.

People who ask questions, ask the obvious questions: what’s the craziest maneuver you’ve ever done, what was the scariest moment, is it still thrilling? Do you have any comments?

It’s absolutely thrilling, every show we do is just thrilling.

As far as the craziest maneuver we do, I’m not sure what the craziest maneuver would be. What we call the “Diamond 360,” that’s the first maneuver you’ll see the diamond formation do after we finish all the take-off maneuvers, that’s where we’re at 18” of wing-tip to canopy separation, I classify that in the exciting, crazy category. It’s truly something that you’re not going to do anywhere else, it’s nothing unsafe and it’s nothing beyond what you would have learned as a jet pilot in the military, it’s just an extreme refinement of what you’re taught.

Everything that we do is done to such a precise level, that it’s exciting to be able to say you can do that.

Meet Joslynn Jones McLaughlin, Beaufort resident and “Molly Marine” of the Savannah Derby Devils.

The Derby Devils are a women’s flat track roller derby league formed in Savannah in 2006, and Joslynn, aka “Molly Marine,” has been skating with the league for the last two years. Women’s roller derby has been experiencing a boom in the last decade, drawing in new fans and attracting athletic skaters who enjoy the exhilaration of the sport. It is a tough sport, requiring the quality of perseverance which Joslynn has shown throughout her life.

USMC Band Born and raised in Milton FL, in the Pensacola area, Joslynn grew up in the “house my Daddy was raised in.”

Not only did Joslynn grow up in her dad’s family home, she followed his footsteps right into the United States Marine Corps. (Her father served four years in the USMC during the Vietnam War.) An accomplished saxophone player, she auditioned for the prestigious Marine Corps Band while a senior in high school. She was accepted and joined the USMC in July 1997 directly out of high school. After completing basic training at Parris Island, Joslynn went to the United States Armed Forces School of Music in Virginia Beach, Virginia where she excelled and was named Honor Graduate of her class.

As part of one of the twelve field bands in the Marine Corps (the USMC Band was founded in 1798 by an Act of Congress and is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization) Joslynn did a year tour of duty in Okinawa, Japan and then back to Parris Island.

“Even now, after playing for colors and graduation every week for 2 years, watching that ceremony is still a moving and pride-filled experience” she says. “And being one of 600 elite Marine band members in the Corps was truly an honor and a privilege.”

After becoming a parent (to Steven, now 11), Joslynn finished her four years with the USMC and then went home to Florida to complete her college education, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Economics from the University of West Florida in 2003. “I really enjoyed my time back at home near my family during college, but after a couple years of working in the area, I was ready to make a change for my son and me, so we moved back to Beaufort in 2006,” she says.

Back to Beaufort “My best friend and former roommate with Marine Corps Band was still stationed at Parris Island and she offered her home to us while I got settled here in Beaufort”. Joslynn quickly found a job as Finance Operation Coordinator for the Beaufort Chamber of Commerce. “Working with the Chamber

I call Beaufort home now.”

In 2007 Joslynn met the man who would become her husband. She says their first date was a “perfect day of kayaking and enjoying the aquarium in Charleston with my son Steven.

I wasn’t even looking for love, but it happened that day as I watched Jason get to know my son. He was the first person who treated Steven as his own person. I could tell that he really wanted to get to know him and his gesture was not just to ‘impress the girl.” A Charleston native, husband Jason

McLaughlin is a welder with Shaw Manufacturing Wrought Iron Works, Inc. in Hardeeville. Joslynn says, “The two most important people in my life are Steven and Jason”. Last year the family bought a house on Lady’s Island and are happily raising their family with a menagerie of pets, including Georgia the bunny.

“The Savannah Derby Devils formed in January 2006 during the international re-emergence of roller derby. In awe of this athletically redefined sport, a small group of women began meeting regularly at a local skating rink in hopes of forming a league. Since then, the SDD has continued to grow, in numbers, skill and in its understanding of this developing sport. Hundreds of women and men have laced up as hopeful SDD skaters and referees. Only a few have made the commitment to the demanding schedule, pricey equipment and physical challenge of being on a roller derby league.

Joslynn had done some skating in high school and was intrigued by the athleticism and the challenge. “I loved it from the start. At bootcamp and early on, I was not the strongest player but made the team and my first bout roster because I had heart and gave 100% to what I was being taught. I was invited to skate in my first bout that September. It was awesome! It was great to work with my team and feel the rush of competition!”

Currently there are 43 active skaters that vary in age from 19 to 55 years old. The Savannah Derby Devils are a completely volunteer organization, no one, including the skaters are paid.

It takes a dedicated woman to take on the strenuous schedule of practice three nights a week in Savannah and the schedule of bouts throughout the season, on top of a fulltime job. (Joslynn is the Assistant Property Manager at Courtney Bend Apartments in Hardeeville, SC.) Joslynn plays blocker position on the team, so determined that she even returned to the team after breaking her leg during a bout in February 2010.”I was on skates eight weeks after the injury, but it took another two months to get over my fears on the track and truly get back in the game,” she says.

The term Molly Marine is well known in the Corps, in fact the first United States monument of a woman in service uniform is known as Molly Marine and was dedicated in New Orleans in 1943 to help recruit women during WWII. In 1999, a replica was cast from the original statue and dedicated at Parris Island. “Molly Marine has tremendous meaning for a female Marine”, says Joslynn, “She represents the patriotism, the commitment and the honor of being a female Marine. I am proud to represent that.”

“Skaters are ‘normal’ during the day. We work, we’re moms, students, etc. Roller derby is our escape from day-to-day life and our opportunity to embrace a tougher, edgier side of ourselves.

When you step into the rink, your derby alter ego takes over.

Derby names are creative and fun and can either be tough or just plain funny.”

What’s Next?

Always looking to expand her horizons and meet new challenges, Joslynn is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Community and Economic Development. She started the 18 month program in January and looks forward to achieving her goal of teaching at the college level and becoming involved with local community development. No matter what she chooses to do, she takes her winning attitude with her, as she says, “I love being part of a team. They bring out the best in me and we can achieve so much together.”

HOW THE GAME IS PLAYED

E

ach bout consists of 14 skaters from each team. A bout is split into two thirty-minute halves, which consist of a series of plays or â&#x20AC;&#x153;jamsâ&#x20AC;? that can last up to two minutes. Each team sends five players on the track for each jam. Most of them form â&#x20AC;&#x153;the pack,â&#x20AC;? led by the â&#x20AC;&#x153;pivotâ&#x20AC;? who acts as the pace car and is noted by the stripe on her helmet. One player from each team hangs back a ways â&#x20AC;&#x201C; sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s called the â&#x20AC;&#x153;jammerâ&#x20AC;? and is distinguished by the star on her helmet.

The jam starts with a whistle. When the pack is 20 feet from the starting line, the referee blows two more whistles, signaling the jammersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; race to be the first one through the pack. The first to get through wins the status of â&#x20AC;&#x153;lead jammerâ&#x20AC;? giving her the privilege of calling off the jam whenever she wants.

Both jammers continue trying to lap the pack as many times as they can in order to rack up points. Each opposing player they pass legally is worth one point, including the other jammer. When the lead jammer calls off the jam or when two minutes has passed, the play stops and the officials calculate the score.

It may look like a free-for-all out there, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not. Jammers do not get points for passes in which she commits a penalty, such as illegal touching, tripping or stepping out of bounds.

Other skaters can also receive penalties for breaking the rules.

“Art is my passion!”

Mary Inabinett Mack is most widely known in the Beaufort community as the owner of the Red Piano Too Art Gallery on Saint Helena Island. “I was twelve years old when my family came to live here, so I grew up on Saint Helena.” But her history took her full circle before she came to own her wonderful, colorful gallery. Well respected in the community, Mary Mack is gracious, outgoing, community oriented and she easily gathers up friends, family, artists and those who are privileged to know her personally, as her own extended family.

Caregiving is an integral part of Mary’s background.

She left Saint Helena for New York City where she lived for twenty-six years; there she went to nursing school, got married and raised her family. For forty years Mary worked in the health care field as a clinical nurse, administrator and taught psychiatric/mental health nursing. When Mary returned to Beaufort, she worked for nine years at the Coastal Empire Mental Health Center.

“I was the after-care coordinator for a five county area, and it was a one person staff. I would oversee home visits in the other counties; once I hitched a ride to Daufuskie Island with Sheriff Tanner and the boat broke down along the way!” With her self-effacing humor, she tells a story about overseeing patients on long acting medications which she had to administrator; “I became known as the Shot Nurse. It was not the same image I had of myself. I thought there was a lot more to me!”

the Gallery. ary’s home is a reflection of her gallery. “I probably have not seen a piece of art that I don’t like!” Here, the walls also are covered with interesting and collectible pieces, as well as family photographs, sculptures, masks and all sorts of visually delightful things. She owns original and early paintings by Jonathan Green and Diane Britton Dunham, as well as other formative pieces by now well known artists. “At a folk art show, I met an artist from Milwaukee. When she came here to do a show, she looked around my house and exclaimed, ‘You have fourteen pieces of my art!’ I didn’t tell her about all the others that were underneath my bed!”

“When I started in this business, the first artist that came to me was Diane Britton Dunham” (see Beaufort Lifestyle August/September 2010 issue). “Diane and I both came to live on Saint Helena at the same time. She came into the Gallery and said to me, ‘I’m an artist.’ I said, ‘Let me see!’ I bought the first fourteen paintings of hers and have been representing her here ever since. She is a really good artist!”

Reflecting on her relationship with Mary, Diane Britton Dunham says: “I’ve known Mary a long time, we’ve worked together for years. When I met Mary I had never sold my art before - I thought she was crazy to buy my pieces! She had my first show and I really appreciated that. She’s been selling my art for about 22 years, I can’t even imagine how many pieces she’s sold of mine. She taught me how to frame my work, how to display my work, I wanted to have an art career but I didn’t know how and she taught me. I will be forever really appreciative of her for that! She has a great vision because she loves art and her heart is really in the art business; she can detect that something special in an artist.”

Blue is the predominant color in Mary’s house, which brings the outside in. Her windows are covered in old shutters which she has found and had cut to size. The effect gives a warm, cottage feel with an eclectic collection of art forms. Her favorite paintings are those of women and she has a wall dedicated to paintings of three women hung beneath a painted photograph of her with her two sisters. As an artist herself, she has a studio in a corner of her sun room with works in progress of women set in seascapes. Her vibrant love of color is evident everywhere and is a perfect match

treatment. Recidivism, the revolving door of patients coming in and out, was significantly reduced; the patients needed constant follow up.” She now volunteers there on the Board of Directors, a position which is appointed by the Governor of South Carolina.

All of this went hand in hand with her art. In New York, Mary says, “My passion really caught fire when I went to an open air exhibit in Greenwich Village. It was the most exciting thing I’d ever seen!” So inspired, she “bought paint-by-numbers canvases, which I hid so no one would see them” and slowly began to learn to paint. Since then she has taken classes. “When I worked as a registered nurse at the Coastal Empire Mental Health Center, there was an artist who came into the center to work with patients teaching art as therapy. I worked with her for two years. At first I started with oils; then I tried watercolors, but they just didn’t work for me. Now I paint with acrylics.” he Red Piano Too is housed in a bright red building on the corner of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Sea Island Parkway on Saint Helena Island. Most well known as a gallery featuring local artists, it also has the largest collection of Gullah art, and other folk art, in the vicinity. Entering the Gallery is like walking into a kaleidoscope; art is hung from floor to ceiling. There are sculptures, baskets, paintings, prints, collages, books, quilts, jewelry, note cards, tiles, wooden and glass bowls, CD’s, dolls, and more, in all forms of media.

Before acquiring The Red Piano Too Art Gallery, Mary had a small business as a picture framer. “I was self taught, then I went to framing school.” Custom framing is also a service offered at

Articulate and generous, Mary has the knack of making you feel like an instant and old friend. hat is Mary’s greatest challenge? “The economy. The first law of economics is: don’t spend what you don’t have. If it doesn’t come in it doesn’t go out.”

What is it like, owning an art gallery? “ The Gallery has evolved to representing about sixty percent of local artists. What pleases me about that is that it has given the artists an outlet; about twenty-five artists started here and we now carry some name brand folk artists.”

Does she miss the health care field? “Yeah, kinda. I’ve gotten involved in health ministry at my church.”

What gets her out of bed in the morning? “Physical therapy. I had knee replacement surgery recently, I’m in a wellness program and we’re like the breakfast club - it gets me going. Also, I love to get up and just look at the view, and I always get excited about going to the Gallery.”

What did she find most rewarding about her career in health care? “My prize position was being Deputy Director of the Beaufort Jasper Hampton Comprehensive Health Services, Inc. It was all encompassing including areas such as family medicine, pediatrics, dental, OBGYN, and nutrition.”

Caregiver, caretaker, nurse, administrator, volunteer, artist, business woman, universal aunt, mother, sister and friend to many, Mary Mack is a beacon in the community.

he best criterium cyclists in the country will be tearing through downtown Beaufort May 3 in the Fifth Annual Beaufort Memorial Cycling Classic.

Racing at speeds up to 40 miles an hour, the 70 female and 118 male competitors will ride 30 to 45 miles around a .6-mile course that begins and ends at the clock on Bay Street.

“It’s amazingly exciting to watch,” said Joe DeVito, one of the organizers of the event. “They’re riding inches from each other at very fast speeds and making tight turns without touching the brakes.”

The Cycling Classic is part of the USA Crits Southeast series, a seven-race cycling competition that begins in Athens, Ga., April 30 with the Terrapin Twilight and ends eight days later in Sandy Springs, Ga. The Beaufort heat, sponsored for the fifth year by Beaufort Memorial Hospital, is the third race in the series.

All 15 national professional cycling teams will be represented in the criterium. The men cyclists will ride 75 laps around the course, which starts on Bay Street and loops around Scott, Raven and Newcastle streets.

The women will make 50 laps.

Riding on bikes weighing 17 pounds or less, the competitors will peddle at an average 25 to 30 miles per hour for up to two hours. During the race, their heart rates will accelerate to 150 to 180 beats per minute, with some reaching up to 200 beats per minute in the final laps.

Doing Everything they Can To Get What They Can We were flying down a rutted, dirt road at 70 miles an hour, in a Toyota Landcruiser with broken power steering and fitted with airplane tires. Our driver was very quiet and had the music turned up loud to calm his nerves.

Mark Walker, Bobby Davidson and I had been in Sudan for about five days. We came on this trip through Seaside Vineyard Church in Beaufort to bring aid to southern Sudan and support some indigenous pastors we had relationships with. I was glad to have come and knew I would be coming back again. But at this point, we had accomplished what we had come to do and it was time to get out of the country.

Our driver was nervous because we were on the only road to Juba, the capital of southern Sudan, and there were men the locals refer to as “black snakes” along the road. They would come out of the thickets and kill people in vehicles, then steal whatever they found. Two days before a pair of Somali truck drivers had been killed on this road, and our driver knew about it. We also had bad gas in the car, because they fill your gas tank with buckets since there’s no electricity. The engine kept losing power and we’d slow to a crawl in the worst possible places.

Southern Sudan is an area with a mountain of difficulties to overcome. For 23 years, up until 2005, they had been in a civil war with northern Sudan. Most of the oil resources are in the African, mostly Christian south, but the government is in the Arab north. The government in the north has been in an on and off attempt to eradicate the people in the south since the 1950’s.

2011 brought a vote for the south to split from the north into its own country. This passed in free elections with 98% of people voting to split from the north.

Simply having freedom doesn’t eradicate your problems though. Twenty-three years of warfare will change your perspective on things. The biggest problems seemed to be internal now, rather than external. People live like there’s no tomorrow and not a good way. The people in southern Sudan don’t know if tomorrow will ever come, so they do everything they can to get what they can now, even at everyone else’s expense. This coupled with large amounts of foreign aid coming in means that everything is very expensive, even by American standards. Simple supply and demand states that if you provide lots of money into a place with a constant amount of resources, everything is going to get expensive very fast. Consequently there’s a tremendous amount of money moving around, but everyone is still poor. warfare as different tribes steal livestock from each other, then raid and burn down each others villages in retribution. Women and children are also frequently kidnapped and sold into slavery.

This paradigm spills over into government as well, and this is what we encountered when we tried to put in a medical clinic in Bor, about 100 miles north of Juba. The local government told us that in Africa, believing is seeing, and that if we put up a building, they would then deed the land over to us. That was simply not going to happen, as that had been done in other places, and as soon as the building was put up, the government moved the boundary and took the building.

But having feet on the ground brought benefits that couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have been reached from 10,000 miles away. Joseph is the pastor in Bor, and though we thought we were coming to try to help him out there, he had other things in mind. Joseph was born in a village north of Bor called Lilir, and his desire was to bring aid to his home village and eventually move back.

To say we travelled the road to Lilir doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do justice to the trip. The wet season had just ended, and the dirt road was an endless series of potholes and four foot ruts impassable by anything except the most rugged four wheel drive vehicles.

tore them up. Landcruisers are some of the most rugged vehicles around, and we passed one with its axle sitting behind it. It took us about two hours to do the 30 miles to Lilir.

Whereas Bor had been a shanty town of tin, wood, and plastic full of people looking for security, Lilir was a village that had stayed anchored to its roots. The people here still raised cattle, cassava, and tobacco, and lived in mud and grass huts.

The chiefâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name was Solomon, and he had led the village for 50 years. He was 80 years old, had four wives, 17 children and lots of grandchildren. Solomon greeted us and we sat down under a large shade tree to get out of the heat. I could tell on the faces of the crowd that gathered around the respect paid to Solomon. One of his sons, and one of his grandsons, (both about the same age) sat on his lap as he spoke to us.

As we talked it became apparent to us that Solomon had a different point of view from what we had seen already in Sudan. In Bor and Juba, everything was about seeing what I could get now. They had no resources, no plan and no outlook for the future. Solomon had a plan and an outlook for the future, but few resources. Lilir had three wells, but nowhere to store water. The shell of a water tank stood in the village, but the Arabs shot it full of holes and attempted to destroy the supports with RPG fire. There were 60,000 people in the greater area, but no medical care unless you were carried for 8 hours on a blanket, then trucked 5 hours from there to the nearest hospital. Given this option, most people simply died.

A school was already built in the village, funded by the Total Oil Company, but Solomon told us that what they needed was a clinic and a church, and if we could get the resources to do those things, he was willing to donate village land so that could happen; no bribes, no corruption.

Solomon’s son David, who was our driver to Lilir, was a trained nurse, so this plan had already been in the works long enough for him to get his education. It was at that point that we knew what we had to do and that our trip to Sudan was not going to go to waste. We told him we would build a clinic and a church, and we would see him again soon.

As I write this, Mark Walker is packing to go back to Sudan, and we all plan to go back again this November. You can throw

money at problems that are so big that no amount can ever make a difference. The beautiful thing about what’s going on in Sudan right now and particularly in Lilir, is that we can take limited resources and make a difference in one small place, and it’s the people there that are taking ownership of it. The country has to go on when we’re not there anymore, so we’re encouraging them to be self-sufficient after the initial input. Solomon will be 81 by the time I go back, and I hope he lives a long time and can infect people with his wisdom that will eventually change the face of Sudan.

he 8th Annual Soft Shell Crab Festival will be held in Port Royal on Saturday, April 23, 2011 from noon – 5pm on Paris Avenue in the Old Village of Port Royal. Admission is FREE. Dance to a live radio remote with 104.9 The Surf and the featured band THE HEADLINERS. The Headliners, according to local fans, are probably the most requested band in the Southeast. With over 200 performances a year, this six piece horn band is fresh and in demand. Their winning repertoire of Big Band, Classic 50’s and 60’s Rock and Roll, Beach Music and Motown will surely get you moving. In addition to the great music you can snack on a vast array of tasty treats including the local delicacy soft shell crab. The Old Village Association of Port Royal (OVA) was created in 2003 in an effort to promote local businesses and bring exposure to the Historic Town of Port Royal. The non-profit organization’s membership consists primarily of business owners but also includes several local residents. The all-volunteer membership works year-round promoting the Town and its businesses by hosting two major festivals and several other seasonal events. The first event hosted by OVA was Oktoberfest held in the fall of 2003. The group decided to add a second event in the spring of the year that featured their local fishing industry. Bob Bender, the first OVA President and Curator for the LowCountry Estuarium, was instrumental in creating the vision for the Inaugural Soft Shell Crab Festival.

It was a great fit – Bob’s extensive knowledge of crabs and their molting season timed perfectly with the spring festival. The first festival attracted about 1000 attendees but has grown to a 7000plus crowd in recent years.

he Historic Port Royal Foundation was founded in 1976. The purpose of the foundation to restore, preserve, protect and encourage the proper use of buildings, landmarks, articles and institutions of historical or architectural value in Port Royal. The promotion of knowledge and appreciation of the Union Church and ongoing development of our History Museum are of primary importance. Currently the foundation is hosting a Speaker Series, as well as Community Suppers in the Union Church.

Our History Museum is in the rear of the Union Church and features the history of shrimping and fishing, as well as train industries in the town, and their impact on the development of Port Royal. This endeavor is closely linked with our rennovation efforts of the Union Church, which was recently placed on The National Register of Historical Places. We have completed electrical wiring, the installation of lighting fixtures, required re-plastering and the building of a handicap ramp. As well, we’ve partnered with the Town of Port Royal to complete the restoration of the church. There is much more to be done and donations are always welcome.

tempt you, try the Big OL’ Cinnamon Roll, a large hot cinnamon roll smothered in Cream Cheese icing. What a tasty way to start the day! Breakfast is served Monday through Friday, 7am to 11am and on Saturday from 8am to 11am.

Fresh from the Garden & the Sandwich Board Charlie says the El Cubano (Tavern Ham, Salami, Swiss, mustard and dill pickles on buttered and pressed Cuban bread) is a popular choice, although the Crab Cake (home-made lump crab cake on a croissant with pepper jack cheese, secret mustard sauce, lettuce and tomato) is also a customer favorite.

The Greek salad (mixed greens with garbanzo beans, sun-dried tomatoes, cucumbers, pepperoncinis, kalamata olives, feta cheese, and croutons) is a typical example of the fresh and exciting salad choices, perfect for a spring lunch. Lunch is served Monday through Saturday 11a.m. to 5p.m.

Dinner Time Berry Island Café will be getting their beer and wine license by the end of April and Charlie says he will be expanding the menu to include tapas plates. “With each glass of wine, we’ll serve olives, hard salamis, cheese and fruits to compliment our wine selections. Regarding the beer list, the focus will be on serving all Carolina beers, craft beers from both North and South Carolina.”

He plans on being open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights until nine.

Lowcountry Ambiance Whether you drop in for an ice cream or a full meal, you will enjoy being in the light filled and spacious dining area, which strikes just the right balance between comfortable and casual. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they will happily accommodate any special request. Planning That Perfect Honeymoon

by KATHRYN LEMMON, Wedding Zone Staff Writer With all the planning for the ceremony and reception, the honeymoon can sometimes get neglected. Don’t let that happen to you and your hard-earned money. Here’s some advice to make the honeymoon as special as the wedding.

Do your homework. Before seeking out a travel agent, decide what type of trip you’re interested in and approximately how much you want to spend. The more specific your destination and activity wish list, the less time you’ll waste on unrealistic dreams which are beyond your budget. Select your travel agent with care, as all agents are not created equal.

Don’t forget to mention to your travel agent that it’s a honeymoon. Have he/she ask for any available honeymoon perks. Resorts, hotels and tour packages will sometimes offer honeymoon perks such as room-upgrades, champagne, flowers, a free breakfast, etc.

Do know your budget and stick to it. Be up front and honest about your honeymoon budget. Don’t budge if the agent tries to steer you toward a more expensive trip or larger resort.

For example, if seeing the sights of a European city are more important to you than a deluxe hotel room, tell the agent.

Knowing what you can and can’t live without will help them build an itinerary that meets your priorities and your budget.

Don’t pick the wrong destination. Unless you’re going to Walt Disney World, select a location geared for couples. Avoid places that have singles, families or seniors in mind.

Do stay flexible with your plans. You’ll have greater access to discount fares and other promotions if your time frame is flexible.

Can you leave two days after the wedding, instead of the very next day? Tell the travel agent. This flexibility could save you hundreds of dollars.

Don’t book an early morning flight. With all the last minute details and perhaps a reception running late into the night, opt for a later flight or the following day, if possible.

Do keep your expectations realistic. No trip is ever one hundred percent perfect. Train conductors go on strike, it rains at the beach and flights gets cancelled. Be mentally prepared for quirks of travel.

Don’t over plan. Allow for some down time in your honeymoon. Take some time to relax and unwind from the stress of the wedding. Make time to just do nothing.

Do consider an all-inclusive resort for convenience and luxury.

One of the most widely known is Sandals, which operates in the Caribbean. Included would be airport transfers, three meals a day, plus snacks in your choice of restaurants, accommodations, beer and wine, activities and much more. You pay up front, but then you’re free to eat, drink and be merry without counting your pennies each evening. To be on the safe side, however, be sure you find out exactly what is included and what is not.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask your travel agent about all the nitty gritty details of your trip, including any drawbacks. Ask for a phone number you can use for after-hours emergencies... preferably a toll-free or collect number.

Do prepare a master packing list well in advance of the wedding.

Don’t be surprised if your travel agent charges a fee. Due to the changing nature of travel planning, and commission cuts from the airlines, some agencies have been forced to charge, whereas in the past, they did not.

If there’s any one day you want your skin and make-up to appear flawless, it’s your wedding day.

Beautiful skin is really all about healthy skin. The truth is healthy skin doesn’t magically appear overnight, no matter how much money you invest in skin care products. It’s an on-going process which happens in the weeks and months leading up to the wedding.

You’ll glow with good looks through consistent, daily skin care.

Sunscreen and moisturizer should be part of your routine, along with a cleanser to take off make-up before bed each night.

Skin experts suggest the four steps to naturally radiant skin are cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and protecting. Choose products with careful consideration by first speaking with a skin expert.

Facials can work wonders and are pleasantly relaxing at the same time. Begin by finding a spa offering custom facials, tailored to your needs. The facial should begin with a one-on-one skin consultation.

If you have sensitive skin, be sure to have a consultation well in advance of the facial and try the products on a spot under your chin to check for any reactions.

The facial treatment consists of several steps. First, your face will be cleansed of any dirt or makeup. Usually, many scrubs, creams, and ointments are applied. Then the skin is typically exfoliated and oil is extracted.

To look your best, take plenty of time beforehand to decide on

It’s a prudent idea to practice your colors in the days leading up to the wedding, but not on the actual day! If you end up with a look you don’t like, there’s still time to make alterations. Talk to the person helping with your hair and make sure you like the way your makeup goes with your hairdo.

In terms of make-up, a morning ceremony calls for a more natural look. Evening weddings generally require formal and darker colors, but don’t get carried away. Bear in mind the lighting where the wedding will take place. If you’ll be married outside in the natural sunlight, go for lighter colors. If you are in the semi-darkness of a church, deeper tones might work best.

Try on your dress and head piece along with your makeup to get the complete picture. If your gown is classic and simple, your hair and makeup should be as well. Watch that your dress color doesn’t clash with your makeup colors. For this important day, it’s best to avoid “trendy” looks such as glittery eye shadow or purple nail polish.

Even if you’re not the weepy sort, waterproof mascara is still a bride’s best bet. If you do shed a few stray tears, your eyes will continue to look great.

Take advantage of the wide range of makeup now available in long-lasting, stay-all-day formulas. But just in case, pack an emergency makeup kit, which you can give to your mom or maid of honor for safekeeping. Include eye drops in the kit to ease tired or red eyes. rofessional Builder magazine has named Beaufort resident Nate Schoen as a “40 Under 40 in the Construction Industry” for 2011. The national award honors professionals in the home building community.
