Jimmy and Wanda McDuffie:

S
Sometimes it only takes one thing to shape a life, give it a direction and a purpose. One thing. Or, in this case, two. Because had it not been for a 1972 burglary at a country store at the corner of Sunnyside and Linden Drive in Waycross, Jimmy McDuffie might not have gotten into law enforcement. And, if it had not been a house fire in 1982 that burned down a home on Clyo-Stillwell Road, Wanda Edwards might not have gotten into public safety. And these two might never have met, might never have gotten married way back in 1990. And then one might not have eventually become Sheriff of Effingham County. And, the other, might not have become the Director of Effingham County Emergency Medical Services. That’s what might not have happened, had there not been a burglary and a fire, a decade and more than 100 miles apart. But, both did happen. And now, all these long years later, Jimmy McDuffie is in his third full term as Effingham County Sheriff and has 37 years in law enforcement. Wanda McDuffie is a Paramedic and Director of Effingham County Emergency Medical Services with 28 years in EMS. And, they make this marriage work, and have done so for nearly 25 years. It works for a number of reasons, including that they love one another, but also because they both understand what the other has to deal with. There’s no “where were you last night,” or “why couldn’t I get you on the phone,” in this marriage. And that’s no little thing in a marriage. “I think it works out a lot better for us because I know what her job as a Paramedic and an EMS Director entails,” Jimmy said. “I know there are going to be times she’s going to have to take care of business, doing the stuff she does, and she’s the same way with me. We understand what the other one goes through because we’ve both been there and done that.” “And, on the other side of it, I’m just married to a good woman,” he added. “If she can put up with me, she can put up with almost anything.” Almost anything. There have been nights Wanda has been worried, listened to the radio knowing calls could go bad. But those nights are just part of the job, part of their jobs. “With Jimmy and me, my knowing what his job involves and his knowing what my job is about makes us have a better marriage, I think,” Wanda said. “I understand there are times his work has to come first. He understands that about mine.”
Any job can get the better of someone and life isn’t perfect. Those who work in public safety know that better than anybody. It’s a tough world out there. It’s even tougher when you’re the one cleaning up the mess and the phone calls come in at midnight or a 12-hour shift turns into one that doesn’t end for 24. Jobs in public safety can play havoc with more than a person’s safety or social calendar. They can seriously mess up someone’s family life, if you’re not careful. Want proof? Go back just six years ago, to February 7, 2008, when the Imperial Sugar Refinery in Port Wentworth blew up, killing 14 people and injuring 42 others. Every public safety agency on the coast kicked it into high gear trying to help. Among the closest were Effingham County’s. “When the sugar refinery blew up that night, we were both home, and both of us started getting calls for assistance,” Jimmy said. “She gets up, starts getting her people and ambulances ready and I get up and get dressed. I’m calling people to line up deputies, so she’s doing her thing and I’m doing mine and we’re both getting ready to go to work, and, right in the middle of it, our daughter Samantha comes into the room and said, ‘Mama, what about me?’” That, Jimmy said, “hit home.” “We had both been working on getting stuff ready to go to respond to the explosion and both of us had completely overlooked the fact our daughter (who was 10 at the time) was going to be in the house by herself,” he said. “That was kind of like a kick in the stomach to both of us.” Four little words. Jimmy can still hear them, so can Wanda. “Mama, what about me?” “I remember thinking ‘oh my God,’” said Wanda, whose brother, Kyle Edwards, works at the sugar refinery and was working the night of the explosion. “We were both so in tune to going out to help somebody else, and here was our daughter, worried about what we were going to do about her.” Sam, youngest of their two children, ended up staying with Wanda’s parents, who live nearby. Caleb, their son, is married and has a 6 month old son, and lives in Waycross. Supportive families are a must, and the McDuffie’s have that. “We didn’t leave Sam by herself,” Jimmy said. “But I know that with us doing what we do, it’s been hard on her. She sees and hears stuff sometimes that kids shouldn’t have to. Neither me or Wanda like to take anything from our jobs to the house, but sometimes there are some things you can’t help but talk about around the house.”

JIMMY The job has changed a lot since Jimmy McDuffie first came to Effingham County way back in 1987. He had just tried a sevenmonth stint running a Shoney’s Restaurant because he got tired of the low pay in law enforcement. “I wanted to make some real money,” he said. Before the restaurant, he’d been a sheriff’s deputy in Brantley County and before that worked for Patterson Police Department. But, he thought he might try something that paid better and when a friend offered him a job at Shoney’s, he decided to take it. That stint in restaurant management didn’t come close to working, but it did teach Jimmy a lesson. “I learned a new respect for people in food service,” Jimmy said. “Thankfully, a friend of mine called me and asked me if I wanted to get into law enforcement. At this point, I was so sick and tired of being a restaurant manager, I asked where it was. It was in Effingham County. “I said ‘Effiingwhat?’’ Jimmy recalled. “I’d never heard of it, didn’t know where it was, didn’t know how to get there.” He learned how to get to Effingham County. He took a trip up to Springfield from Nahunta, met then-Sheriff Van Findley and got the job. Back then, McDuffie was one of roughly 16 employees on the Effingham County Sheriff’s Department payroll – and that number included everyone from jailers to administrative people to road deputies to the sheriff himself. These days, McDuffie’s ECSO has 140 employees. That includes jailers, process servers, administrative people, detectives, crime scene processors, drug unit and so on. Everybody, in fact, but 911. Sad fact, but the growth in the sheriff’s department reflects a

county that has grown and grown, and changed in ways that aren’t always for the better. “It’s gotten a lot busier than it was,’ Jimmy said. “It used to be after dark there were only a couple of things that could happen in Effingham County. Somebody would hit a deer, a drunk would crash or a husband and wife would get into an argument. And that was about it. We’d only have two of us deputies out there. “Now we’re doing more in one shift than I did sometimes in a month,” Jimmy marvels. He can recall a time in the early 1990s when the county did its case numbers on a yearly calendar starting January 1. Case numbers are anything a deputy does that generates an incident report – whether a homicide or disturbing the peace. When December 31 rolled around, ECSD had generated 9,999 case numbers for the first time ever. “We had hoped to buck an even 10,000 before we closed the books out that night,” Jimmy said. But, that didn’t happen. Not back then, it does now, though. “Nowadays, we’re doing that in a two month period,” Jimmy said. The nature of the crime has changed too. Violence was rare when Jimmy first started in Effingham, though he vividly remembers an incident in Faulkville where a man barricaded himself up in a house and held his wife at gunpoint. As Jimmy and another deputy stood on each side of the closed door, the man yelled out at them. “He told us, ‘I know where y’all are at,’ and told us exactly where we were standing and that he could shoot us through the walls.” That day was one that could have ended badly. “But we were able to talk our way into the house and get the gun and rifle shells away from the man and get his wife out and everybody went home
safe.” That’s not always the case nowadays. “Every county that touches us has had an officer-involved shooting, except us,” Jimmy said, noting the county has purchased armored vests for deputies and he encourages them to wear them. ”We’ve been extremely fortunate.” But, there have been incidents that could have gone badly wrong. Not long ago, a man in the county pointed a gun on ECSO deputies answering a call. Last year, a standoff in Westwood Heights led to the shooting and killing of an armed suspect who stood inside that house and pointed guns at the deputies. Scary stuff! Jimmy sees it as a sign of the times. “There’s not as much respect for the family, no respect for educators, no respect for law enforcement,” he said. “People are just losing respect all the way around for so many things, the consequences are really irrelevant.” So maybe that’s why Effingham County’s top law enforcement officer thinks anybody who wants to be in law enforcement is crazy. “I tell them to go get another job,” Jimmy said. “Law enforcement today is not what it used to be. I can’t speak for the paramedic side, but in law enforcement our hands are getting tied more and more. You might have split seconds to make a decision that attorneys and people like that have years and years to attack you on. And while I thank God I’ve never had to shoot a man. I’ve been stabbed once. I’ve been bitten. I’ve been beat on, I have been shot at, right here in Effingham County, But I have never had to shoot anybody.” But it’s getting more and more dangerous out there for law enforcement.” While the bad guys seem to be getting worse, the entire world hasn’t gone to hell in a hand basket. And that’s part of why Effingham County’s top law enforcement officer says he stays in law enforcement, when he could be off riding horses or selling cars or doing something sane for a living. “We’ve still got a lot of good people in the world who do the right thing,” Jimmy said. “And a lot of good people in Effingham County. I first came to Effingham County in 1987 and I only knew one person in this entire county. It seems like back then, every time I turned around someone was inviting me over for dinner. The people in Effingham County opened their arms to me and said, ‘welcome, come on in.’” He paused. “I think that’s why our county has grown so much. The people in our county have been so welcoming. And I feel an obligation to give back what some of those people gave to me. There are so many good people in this county that bad things are happening to. If I can help save one of those people, it’s worth it.” It’s probably why he said that of the more than 1,000 people he has arrested over the years, there are few he can’t stop and shoot the breeze with in WalMart. “They knew I had a job to do. Just treat them fairly, treat them with respect and keep them apprised of what’s going on. Treat them the way you would want to be treated.” That’s the way he wants deputies doing their jobs. “I tell my folks all the time, ‘just be nice to people,’” he said. “If they don’t let you be nice, then do what you have to do, but most of the time if you’ll just be nice to people and treat them right, you’re not going to have a lot of problems with them.” WANDA You want to see people at their worst? Become an EMT or Paramedic. You want to see life at its most precious? Become an EMT or a Paramedic. You want to make a difference? Become an EMT or Paramedic. Just don’t expect to get wealthy. Because, while the pay is good,
it’s not going to make you rich. And, the hours aren’t great either. Wanda worked the first 13 Christmases she spent as a Paramedic, missing time at home with her family. “I think it’s more a self-rewarding job than anything else,” said Wanda, who rode calls for 21 years and still rides them when Effingham County EMS needs an extra Paramedic. “This job is very rewarding. You get to make a difference in somebody’s life, and sometimes give them a second chance at life. That’s powerful,” Wanda added. Not that every call is life or death, or what Wanda calls “blood and guts,” though plenty are. But even those that are more mundane are stressful to the person who called for an ambulance. “That person is in a crisis, and they look to you to solve their problem,” Wanda said. And the more stressful the call, the more a paramedic has to remain calm and carry on. It’s part of the training, part of the shell a person has to develop to get the job done when they are holding someone’s life in their hands. A strong faith also helps, and Wanda has hers. “It’s not for the weak of heart, being in EMS,” Wanda said. “You do have to separate yourself from the patients. Have empathy, not sympathy, is how we put it. And sometimes it’s hard to keep those separated. There are many times I’ve prayed for people in the back of the ambulance because there was nothing I could do for them. Yes, there a lot of stresses in the job.” Stresses like dealing with people who have suffered heart attacks, been severely injured in accidents, overdosed on drugs, or committed suicide. And just about anyone will tell you, it’s

worse when it happens to kids, and it’s increasingly happening to our younger generation. For Wanda, that includes people in their 20s. It seems Effingham is seeing an increase in calls involving young people hurt in one way or another, or worse. “Maybe I’m just more aware to it because of my job, or the fact that I have a 16 year old daughter of my own.” Wanda said. Effingham County EMS maybe ran 40 calls a month when she first started. Now, the department’s 25 full time and 14 part-time Paramedics and EMTs respond to over 400 calls per month, working 24 hours shifts. All that time together, leads to a close bond among the EMS crew members. That’s a good thing. “It’s more like a family relationship here,” Wanda said. “When you work a 24-hour shift, you spend more time with your partner than with your family. So we are close. We see people when they are at their worst and we go from doing nothing to being wide open at any moment. We rely on each other.” It also helps to get away from work. “A lot of people don’t believe me when I say this,” Wanda said. “But there has to be time to put it the job aside, hang the outside world on the hat rack and not talk about the job and focus on our lives and our children.”

Horse riding, fishing, camping – Wanda say that is how the McDuffie’s decompress. “We’re low maintenance kind of people,” Wanda said. “We don’t need a lot of structured high-energy recreation. We just enjoy the simpler times and simpler things, maybe going to the mountains and getting away for the weekend.” Effingham EMS has one of the best EMS services in our region. Wanda knows that is because of the quality of employees Effingham County has. “It’s not because I am the Director. It’s because of the great employees I have. They make my job easy. They deserve the credit for everything, and I’m sure Jimmy feels the same way about his employees,” she says. There is something else Wanda wants to make clear. She doesn’t work for the Sheriff’s Office. And the Sheriff doesn’t work for EMS. They may be married, but they’re not the same department. It doesn’t work that way. “We happen to be married, but when we go to meetings, we are two different departments. And he has his opinion about things and Lord knows I have a mind of my own. We don’t always see eye to eye, especially when it comes to budget time.”

Clint Hodges Destined To Become A Firefighter Photography by TODD WOOD
A
s a boy, Clint Hodges thought he might like to be a firefighter. He felt there was something about it that called to him, something about it that was important. As he got older, Hodges tinkered with the idea of becoming an engineer. But, the idea of joining the fire service was never far from the surface. Then, one day there came billowing black smoke, and then fire, and that was all it took to convince Hodges, only 18 at the time, his passion wasn’t building things. His passion was protecting things already built. “To this day, I can remember the incident that prompted me to go down and ask about joining up,” he said. “I noticed heavy smoke coming from across the road, then I saw fire rapidly crossing over from a neighboring subdivision,” recalled Hodges. “I, along with several other neighbors, took over what we could, using hand tools and garden hoses to protect our neighbors’ homes.” And then, Hodges remembered “the relief we had when the fire department arrived on scene to extinguish the fire. After that incident, my desire to join was solidified.” Eleven years later, Hodges is the youngest man to be appointed as full time county Fire Chief by Effingham County and only the third full-time Fire Chief the county has ever had. On this job since July, Hodges commands the Effingham County Fire Department’s 22 full-time firefighters and approximately 45 volunteers who operate out of 10 fire stations, four of which are manned with a full-time firefighter. Plans are to add to that number in the near future. “We hope to start staffing another currently unmanned station within the next couple of months utilizing existing fulltime staff,” Hodges said. The department operates 10 fire engines, eight of which are equipped with the jaws-of-life, eight tankers and a few staff vehicles. Including Hodges, there are four firefighters who are certified as Emergency Medical Technicians, or EMTs. The rest are certified as emergency medical responders. And they stay busy. The department ran about 1,400 calls last year, responding to everything from structure fires to traffic accidents. It will only get busier as Effingham emerges from the economic downturn and more residential homes are being built. “Call volumes will likely be increasing. We will be required to stay current on technology changes and adapt our responses to ensure we are providing the most effective, cost efficient service to our citizens,” Hodges said. But that’s a challenge, not a negative. Hodges sees a bright future for ECFD, due in large part to the men and women he commands. “We have excellent employees, both full-time and volunteer,” Hodges said. “We anticipate an ISO (Insurance Services Office) inspection within the next 12 months.
Our current ISO class is a 4/4y. This means that anyone within 5 miles of a fire station and 1000’ of a fire hydrant/certified water source is a class 4. Anyone within 5 miles of a fire station but outside of 1000’ of a certified water source is a class 4y. Anyone outside of 5 miles is considered to be Class 10 (no fire protection).” But the grading system has changed, making it tougher on departments to maintain their ISO ratings. “The way we were graded by ISO in 2005 has changed drastically, as the entire evaluation process was overhauled in July 2013,” Hodges said. “While the changes to the rating schedule definitely make it more difficult for the fire department, we are taking actions and working with a consultant to make sure we get the best ISO class we can. In addition to ISO, we are beginning fire prevention season, and will be doing fire prevention programs for every Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade class in our district.” Still, any leader worth his salt sees room for improvement. Hodges listed several. Improving the aforementioned ISO grade, doing a better job of recruiting volunteers, improving morale and team spirit, improving the department’s image, increasing public fire prevention programs, replacing technologically obsolete equipment and improving relationships with Rincon, Guyton and Springfield’s fire departments. To help the fire department accomplish those goals, Hodges relies on a down-to-earth leadership style and a commitment to making sure his firefighters get the credit they deserve while also understanding they are people and therefore not perfect. “Treat others as you would like to be treated and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty,” said Hodges of his leadership philosophy. “While the first part is a simple concept, I feel it is regularly forgotten. We have to realize people are going to make mistakes from time to time. Instead of holding those mistakes above their heads, we should use them as learning experiences and ways to improve our services.” Just as it’s important to learn from mistakes, it’s also important to recognize successes. “One issue we immediately addressed was the lack of recognition for outstanding service,” said Hodges. As an example, he pointed to two members of the department who helped make sure a recent medical first responder course was a success by going above and beyond what was required of them. “Instead of a simple thank you, we drafted a recognition/commendation letter that was presented to the staff members and was placed in their personnel files,” Hodges said. “When you open anyone’s personnel file, you historically only see the mistakes someone has made. It’s important to also show the positives in order to display a more accurate image of the individual.”

And then there’s getting one’s hands dirty. Hodges, who has a firefighting resume that includes advanced certifications in firefighting, fire instructing, hazardous materials and as a fire officer, fire and life safety educator and as an intermediate level EMT, believes leaders need to lead. “It is hard to ask anyone to act one way when the ‘’leader’ is not doing it also,” he said. “I also think being accessible and honest with your team members is crucial. I want all our firefighters to feel comfortable with bringing their ideas or concerns forward, without fear of reprisal. I highly encourage everyone to express ideas for ways to improve our current method of operation. I want our fire department to function in the most efficient manner possible. When we ask why something is done a certain way, the answer should be ‘because that is the best way,’ not ‘that’s just the way we have always done it.’” Hodges doesn’t come by his position or his philosophy without experience or education. He started college at Armstrong years ago and finally finished and graduated from Georgia Southern with a bachelor’s degree in May, despite full-time work since 2007 as a firefighter, lead instructor and shift supervisor for Effingham County and as a firefighter, lieutenant and captain for Rincon before resigning from RFD due to the demands of his county job. There hardly seems a day that goes by in Effingham County these days when you don’t hear sirens. Once bucolic, the community has changed rapidly over the past two decades as residential and commercial growth has sprung up all over. It keeps emergency personnel busy, but there’s always down time. For Hodges, the best way to spend that time is not to waste it. He’s married, has great in-laws and doesn’t mind being around

horses. Which is important, as you will soon learn. “My wife, Courtney, and I have been married for a bit over 3 years. We live in the city of Rincon,” he said. “She and I actually met during the week I was working at the Imperial Sugar disaster, and went on our first date on Valentine’s Day in 2008.“ The Hodges don’t have kids yet, but may someday. In the meantime, there are two Jack Russell’s, Ryder and Jasper, and Clint said both he and his wife are fortunate to have great relationships with each other’s families. There’s occasionally also time for hunting, fishing or playing golf. And horses. “While I don’t personally ride, there is always something to be done at the barn. My wife has been riding horses since she was a young child and can be found nearly every weekend at a horse show or rodeo, where she barrel races.“ There are friends, too. Hodges considers himself lucky to have what he called “a great group of friends, and while we stay extremely busy, spending time with them is very important to us.” But there’s always the calling that began when Hodges was a boy and became a passion as he grew into a teen. Hodges joined the Rincon Fire Department as a volunteer in 2003, where he was fortunate to be mentored by some great firefighters. There was something else, too. Something that appealed to Hodges from the beginning. “I was immediately impressed by how close-knit the overall fire service is,” he said. “We may have our differences from time to time, but at the end of the day, we are all brothers and sisters.” A family, then. LaMeisha Hunter Kelly A Passion For Government And Community Story by STEFANIE BARNES Photos by TINA HELMLY
L
aMeisha Hunter Kelly, an Effingham County native, is currently serving the City of Rincon as its City Planner, and has been since January of 2007. A self-described “government nerd,” it is clear that Kelly has a passion for all things government. In fact, she has been working in government since 1999 and has always known that working in government was her calling. Her love for government began at an early age. Raised by her grandparents, Daniel and Sarah Hunter, Kelly fondly remembers her first taste of patriotism saying, “My grandparents taught me the importance of voting. I would go vote with them and I remember on Election Day, you had to get cleaned up, change your clothes, and I would take turns going behind the curtain with each of them while they voted.” Her adoration for government work only grew as she got older. “I always knew I was going to do something with government. I actually thought I was going to be a lawyer, but when I finished undergrad at Georgia Southern, I realized I wasn’t mature enough to go to law school at the time,” she says, “My mentor suggested I get my master’s degree in public administration, so I went for it and began taking classes.” Starting her career as an intern at the Effingham County Development Authority, she then took a job in Statesboro as City Planner. After that, Kelly would become a grant writer in Hinesville. She would finally end up back in Effingham County, where she worked for seven months as a senior planner before coming to Rincon as the City Planner. Even though she has worked in a few different areas, Kelly came “home” when she traveled back to Effingham County years ago. “I always tell everyone I’m a proud Guytonian and Guyton Gator. I graduated from Effingham County High School.” A community-minded

individual and hard worker, Kelly certainly goes above and beyond, not only for the city of Rincon, but for Effingham County in general. In addition to being city planner for Rincon, Kelly is active in many different organizations. The Rincon Noon Lions Club is one organization that she belongs to that serves the city of Rincon in a huge way. Described by Kelly as “a dedicated group of individuals,” this organization provides glasses for youths in the community that otherwise could not afford them. They also support the Leader Dog program as well as providing camps for the blind. Serving her second term on the advisory board for Effingham United Way, Kelly boasts that the organization provides many different services available in Effingham County. Medbank assistances is available, which helps assist individuals with medicine as well as counseling services, food programs and eConnect, which helps families find services they may need. She is also the only representative from Effingham County on the Coastal Empire United Way vision council, which is very beneficial for Effingham County. The vision council is charged with setting the financial policies that govern the grant process. Having a representative from Effingham certainly assists in the county receiving more beneficial grants. Kelly is also on an advisory committee for Effingham Career Academy. Last, but not least, Kelly is on the board of trustees for Effingham Health System. “Health is not my area,” she says, “so it has been a learning experience, but I am so proud of the health system that we have in Effingham. I feel comfortable that my family can go right down the street and be seen and not have to fight traffic to go all the way to Savannah. You know, in an emergency, those minutes count.” Community is obviously important to Kelly, and it is

a wonder she finds the time to support the community in so many ways in addition to doing her job as city planner, and doing it well. It obviously helps that she loves her job. “My favorite thing about my job is working with people and the fact that I’m always doing something different. I can come into the office one day and have a plan laid out for what I’ll work on that day, and then I end up working on something totally different,” she says. One major accomplishment that has come about since Kelly took the job of City Planner is getting the first CDBG grant for the city since the 1990’s. The city’s zoning ordinance also underwent a total revision, as well as obtaining a gateway grant for crepe myrtles in the median. Kelly’s goal for her future as City Planner would be the ability to be able to write more grants after developing a support staff that will allow her to put forth the time and effort to do so. A busy woman, between work and volunteering, Kelly is convinced she couldn’t do it without the love and support of her family. “Family is extremely important to me. I come from a really tight knit family and I’m blessed to still have both of my grandparents with me still. I’m also the oldest of five siblings – Daniel, Jonah, Tut, and Montrelle,” says Kelly. Her family name is notorious around Effingham County for being the owners of Hunter’s Pride Barbeque Sauce. Her entire family plays a huge role in her successes – especially her husband Terry, she says. “I always tell people, God has a sense

of humor because I married someone with a personality just like mine,” she says with a laugh. “Terry is always there for me. He participates in everything that I do because he enjoys most of it and he supports me tremendously.” The Kelly’s also have a sixteen year old daughter named Katie. When asked what she is most proud of during her career as Rincon City Manager, Kelly says, “I’m proud of the July Fourth festival. My department inherited that and it used to be quite different. It used to be held on July 4th until we decided to have it the Saturday before so that we could get more participation. We used to have it at the youth building at First Baptist – that’s how small it was. Pastor Gregory Brunson was the chair of the committee and had the idea to try doing it on a Friday night. We did it and it has grown from there. I had the idea of doing a laser light show instead of fireworks and we just ran with it. It’s something to be proud of. It isn’t just a draw for Effingham – people come from all over the area to enjoy it and we are still thinking of ways to build on it.” Family and community are obviously key parts of Kelly’s life, and it is no wonder that she is able to incorporate both into her career. She says that the Council and City Manager have made it a wonderful experience for her. “I’m blessed to be here,” she says, “With all of the growth going on in Pooler, people are always going to want to move a little further out, and we are ready for it. It’s an exciting time to be in Rincon.”

Springfield’s Chief of Police Paul Wynn has been a local law enforcement fixture for so long, folks might forget he’s not originally from Effingham County. Raised just outside of Atlanta in Douglasville, Paul moved with his family to the Savannah area when he was twelve and attended Thompkins High School. After high school, he relocated to Jacksonville, Florida. He spent the next few years working construction and contract painting jobs while carving out a life as a single dad raising a young son. By the time Paul reached his twentieth birthday, he had left Jacksonville and was back in the Savannah area following a friends recommendation that he should go into law enforcement. Paul chose to attend the Southeast Georgia Police Academy at Armstrong Atlantic State University and his first position after graduating from the academy was as a patrol officer for the Springfield City Police Department. Through the years on the force, he was promoted to corporal, sergeant and lieutenant, serving in every position on the force before becoming Police Chief in 2005. Paul was already a 13-year veteran of the Springfield’s police department when he was named chief. He had served as interim chief after temporarily filling the position left vacant by the unexpected retirement of Chief Richard Newell a few months prior. City officials had such confidence in Wynn’s ability to hold the position permanently, that the vote was unanimous. Wynn credits a strong working partnership with City Manager Brett Bennett and a close and positive relationship with City Officials with his role as an effective Chief of Police. As Chief of Police for the City of Springfield, Paul Wynn is a very visible leader in city government. Today, he oversees the operations and budget of the police department, provides a 24-hour a day police presence on the streets, and budgets for the purchase of equipment like patrol cars and weapons, and fund prevention programs. He maintains a small but effective staff of one civilian clerk, seven full time officers including himself and three part time officers. “I couldn’t do what I do here without my team. Each and every one of them gives me 100 percent and brings something strong and unique to the table.” Allocating funds among these and other competing priorities requires vision, strategy and excellent communication skills. In order to stay abreast of new techniques and strategies as chief, Chief Wynn and his staff receive twenty hours a year or more in mandated continuing education in areas such as use of force, understanding, identifying and preventing elder abuse, and firearm safety and use. Working with residents and businesspeople in the community of about 2,250 residents is also a big part of the job, Wynn said. “Much of what I do is not always criminal but about public safety. Sometimes the call is about a lost dog or a noisy neighbor but we answer them all.” Sometimes those public safety endeavors have surprising results. Take traffic stops for instance. Over the past 21 years, Chief Wynn has seen a marked shift in the demographics of crime in Springfield. “On average, we see a 10 - 12% increase in call volume and responses each year,” he states. While there has been an increase in domestic violence and violent juvenile crimes, he’s happy to note that today there are fewer drug related crimes. Wynn credits the drop in drug related crimes to managing traffic stops better. “If you can manage your traffic stops, you can manage your drugs. You don’t see many drug dealers around here with helicopters or horse drawn buggies.”

Community outreach is important to Chief Wynn. He says getting to know the citizens at the individual level is essential to building trust between the police department and the community. It’s this relationship of trust he’s built with the citizens and his passion for his community that keeps him in Springfield. “I just love the community and the people. It’s a good environment, and it’s my home,” he says. Under Chief Wynn’s leadership, the Springfield Police Department works closely with the citizens of the community by checking on the elderly, increasing patrols in problem neighborhoods and checking on businesses after hours. They also participate in career day at the the local elementary school, as well as provide free gun locks to citizens who need them. “My team is essential to our success,” he shares quietly, “so very, very essential.” “National Night Out” is also organized and hosted locally by the Springfield Police Department. “National Night Out” is an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Educational booths, entertainment, food and fun activities bring law enforcement and citizens together and can help foster conversations about such things as gun control and citizen safety. City council meetings, volunteer meetings, luncheons, charity events and emergency situations often happen outside regular business hours. Officer-involved shootings, major crimes and other emergencies can pull a chief from bed at 3:00 a.m. to deal with superiors, subordinates and the media. Chief Wynn just takes it all in stride. “As chief, you wear so many hats you can’t count them all,” he says. “Role model, mentor, law enforcer, dog catcher - it’s all part of what you do.” Chief Wynn is a firm believer in partnering closely with other public servants and agencies and doesn’t hesitate to help pull a fire hose, direct traffic, move a gurney or whatever is necessary in a crisis situation. “It’s about teamwork. It’s not about my job or your job. It’s about teamwork and doing what is right for the citizens of Springfield.” He frequently reaches out and relies on outside agencies such as the Effingham County Sheriff’s department and others to assist to providing services to the citizens of Springfield when necessary. Chief Wynn keeps it all real at the end of the day when he heads home to his wife Jeanne and dog Mikey. Paul and Jeanne met through work have been married for eighteen years. Jeanne is also a member of law enforcement so she knows what it takes. She attended the police academy in Augusta, GA in 1994 and worked in Richmond County before moving to Rincon. She is now a deputy sheriff for Effingham County. Paul gives Jeanne a lot of credit for helping him maintain his focus and avoiding burnout on the job. With both of them working in law enforcement, they decided early in their relationship after one case in particular that home was off-limits to work related conversations. “Home is our sanctuary,” he says, “and we just shut it off when we get there.” An avid outdoorsman, you can probably find Chief Wynn fishing or hunting small game in season in his spare time. He gives away as much game as he hunts and as many fish as he catches, usually to his neighbors, friends and community members. “It’s just relaxing, a way to step away from it all for a minute and regroup.” The Wynn’s have a son, Nicholas, 27, and they attend Mizpah United Methodist Church in Clyo.

ebra Scruggs has been working as Guyton City Clerk for thirty two years and has lived in Effingham County her entire life, except for the brief three months her and her husband moved to Florida. “I couldn’t stand it,” she says, “I had to come back to Effingham. I woke up one morning and told my husband I was going home!” Lucky for the City of Guyton, she did just that. Scruggs and her husband packed up and moved back to Effingham County after their brief stay in Florida. She worked as City Clerk before she left for Florida, and soon after, she got the exact same job back. Scruggs is now the longest-employed person working at Guyton City Hall. Having lived in Effingham her whole life, Scruggs has also always lived within three to four miles of City Hall. This may aide in her dedication to her job, but anyone who knows her will tell you that she is simply a hard worker – it is part of who she is. Being loyal to the same job for thirty two years is an enormous accomplishment for anyone. The thing the she loves most about her job? “I have always loved the people. So many great people,” says Scruggs. Scruggs describes herself as “Country to the core.” Growing up on a farm and being the daughter of a big tobacco farmer taught her that long work days make you stronger and more independent. “I went to work when I was nine years old in the tobacco field. That’s what we did all summer long! We stayed out of school for planting season in the spring, you could never do that now,

and then right when school got out for summer we worked all summer long,” remembers Scruggs. Her parents, Fred L. Morgan and Elizabeth Morgan, can be credited for the work ethic instilled in Scruggs and her siblings (two sisters and one brother). “My parents gave us very strong work ethics,” she says fondly, “Daddy worked at International Paper (formerly known as Union Camp Corporation) for forty-four years and he was a farmer. Us girls were raised driving tractors and we knew how to work all the equipment. We were raised to be very independent and I’m very thankful for that.” Like any job, there is sure to be stress that comes along with being city clerk, but to a dedicated employee like Scruggs who would do anything for the city she loves, it seems to be just another part of the job. “It can certainly be very demanding, especially when I’m the only one there. I used to take a lot of work home with me and continue to work even after I was off. It’s just a drive that I have to keep at it. You can’t let it overwhelm you. You just can’t,” says Scruggs. When she isn’t busy working hard, she does like to enjoy time with friends and family. Curtis Scruggs, her husband, has provided a huge support system for her. Scruggs also has a daughter, Jamie Tucker, and two grandchildren; Kinley and Clay. From ball games to band car washes, she enjoys using her free time to support her grandchildren in any way she can. She can also be found teaching Sunday school at Pine Street Baptist Church in Guyton. Her biggest supporter is her best friend, Elaine Vandiver. Scruggs says about her best friend, “We are lifelong friends and
first cousins. If we hadn’t have been first cousins, we would still be lifelong friends. As we’ve grown older, our children are best friends, and we have learned to make fun out of a bad situation. She has always been my shoulder to cry on. It didn’t matter what was going on, she was always there. She is such a good person. Sometimes I don’t think I deserve her.” It is a wonder that Scruggs finds the time to enjoy life outside of City Hall, but she somehow manages to do it all. During her career as City Clerk, Scruggs has had her hand in many different projects. Scruggs was there when a new school came to town in the late 1980’s which required sewage, thus instigating installing sewage throughout the city and remembers it well. She also remembers the day the caboose came to Guyton from Norfolk Southern. “I remember they brought it into Springfield and they unloaded it with a crane and brought it over here to Guyton,” she recalls. Some other big things that have happened during her career are the police department being created in 2006, the city getting a new water tank, and one of her favorite additions – the walking trail. Scruggs says, “Tons of parents and school kids are always on it walking their kids to school. It is busy almost all day.” A jack of all trades, Scruggs is also a certified well-operator since 1984. After the city had sent several people to take the test, and they all failed, they came to Scruggs and told her they wanted her to try her hand at it. “One day, out of the blue, they said they were going to send me! I thought they were joking! But I went to school at Savannah State and passed the test. I was the operator
for many years,” says Scruggs. Not only is she a certified well-operator, she takes on a lot more to help out her city than she is required to do, and she doesn’t mind a bit. ““I’m a multi-tasker. If somebody needs their water cut off and everybody’s gone, I’ll go out and do it. If I get a call in the middle of the night, I go,” says Scruggs. “I remember one day not long ago, a subdivision had a flooded street and everybody was gone. So, I went up there and waded water knee deep to get the water flowing again!” Scruggs is particularly proud of the developing Civic Center located in the old gymnasium on Magnolia Street. The facility will be rented out for birthdays, wedding receptions, etc. and is available for public use. Guyton City Hall has also moved three times since Scruggs began working for the city. Its current location is on Central Boulevard in Guyton, right in front of the caboose. Something that Scruggs is excited for at the end of the year, and rightfully so, is her retirement. She loves to fish and garden and hopes that she will be able to enjoy her time off. She says about her upcoming retirement, “‘I’m hoping I’m going to like it. I’m not sure. I think I’ll like it because I don’t let myself get bored. I’ll look for something to do. I think my grandchildren will keep me busy! I look forward to being able to garden more and enjoy all the little things.” She then says with a chuckle, “If I don’t like, maybe I can get another job!”

eatloaf like Mama’s or sweet tea like your Grandma used to make are something we all long for and find comfort in. Food that takes us back to our childhood and awakens memories of simpler times is hard to come by in the fast-paced world we live in. We all desire the food we grew up with; made carefully, no matter how long it took to prepare. Cooking the food was never a chore, but a labor of love to be shared with family and friends. Debbie Lockard, owner of Debbies on 4th, wanted to ensure that this type of home-cooking is available to everyone – as long as they don’t mind driving to Rincon. Located right off Highway 21 on Fourth Street is where you’ll find the quaint restaurant. Patrons describe it as “homey” and “inviting” and as soon as you pull into the parking lot you’ll feel as if you have pulled into your Mama’s driveway for

Sunday dinner. Don’t worry. If you haven’t heard of Debbie’s yet, that’s because it has only been opened since February and not everyone has discovered this hidden gem. A self-taught cook, Lockard says that after working in the restaurant business for around forty-five years and quite literally serving Effingham for eight years, she was finally able to pursue her life-long dream of opening a restaurant of her own. Her desires to provide meals prepared with love and quality ingredients has finally come to life. Many people around town may recognize Lockard from her days as a server at a popular breakfast food chain in Effingham County where she continued to develop her love for the restaurant business until she was able to open a place of her own. In fact, many would say the style of food she serves is similar to the restaurant she used to serve, but much tastier and of higher quality. Debbies on 4th has fulfilled Lockard’s dream by providing a quaint,
comfortable atmosphere where she can continue doing what she loves – feeding the community delicious food. Her goal was to make people comfortable eating at her establishment – a goal she has most certainly accomplished. Her right-hand woman, Stephanie Smith, has been right beside her every step of the way and has been behind the scenes of the restaurant since the very beginning. Even though it is considered a fairly new establishment, having been open only eight months, Debbie’s has already developed a wonderful customer base including “regulars” who won’t miss out on the meatloaf for anything! It is no wonder, because meatloaf happens to be the restaurant’s number one seller. In fact, more often than not they run out of the classic comfort food on a busy night – it is that good! The most expensive item on the menu is a 10oz sirloin steak meal that costs only $11.95. All of your home-cooked favorites
can be found here from fried chicken to a club sandwich, homemade chicken salad and potato salad, as well as mouth-watering desserts like strawberry shortcake, chocolate delight and pecan pie. Debbie also offers up a steal of a lunch special during the week. Take your pick of meat, two sides and dessert for only $7.25. Also, don’t forget to bring your kids in on Thursday and Friday nights for Kids’ Night. For every adult entrée purchased, one child eats free! There are lots of options for the little ones including, but not limited to – chicken fingers, grilled cheese, and hamburgers. Your kids are
sure to enjoy a night out to dinner at this family-style restaurant. Lockard is hoping to see several exciting additions to her menu this fall season now that different produce is available to her to make even more homemade food. She says there are many things to look forward to from Debbie’s on 4th in the future, including her famous “Thirty Day Cake” (also known by some as fruit cake or friendship cake) which she usually debuts in October. While she compares this cake to fruit cake, she says that even those who don’t like fruit cake love her Thirty Day Cake. Be sure to keep an eye for this in the

There’s one thing Sandy Martin wants you to know. “This is not your granny’s quilt shop!,” Sandy says with a laugh. She is the owner of Quarterdeck Quilts, located in Springfield, Georgia. Sandy took her lifelong love of sewing and quilting and turned them into a successful and rewarding business. In 1976, the United States of America was celebrating its 200th anniversary. Sandy Martin was a young woman in Richmond, Virginia, who got caught up in the artisan revival of many folk arts—including quilting. She first started quilting using Jinny Beyer’s (a renowned quilter) designs and fabrics. At that time, Sandy was hand piecing, hand quilting and instilling the art of quilting that would later become her passion. Sandy spent many years working as a computer programmer and systems analyst. After moving to Effingham, her interest in quilting was re-kindled. She began teaching classes at The Guild, a yarn and fabric store in Pooler run by her friend Micki Ribich. She also taught sewing and embroidery classes in Texas and Florida for Husqvarna Viking sewing machines. When she realized that her Guild students were in need of quality sewing machines,

the next logical step was to become a Husqvarna Viking sewing machine dealer. The business grew and space became the next opportunity to overcome. After having a Field Of Dreams moment, Sandy decided, “If I build it, the quilters will come.” Quarterdeck Quilts opened in Springfield in March of 2013. Quarterdeck Quilts is one of the quality sewing machine dealerships in our area. As a Husqvarna Viking dealer, they offer sewing machine sales, service and a complete line of accessories. She carries a wide range of machines--from entry level sewing machines to the top of the line sewing, embroidery, and quilting machines. Sandy also offers classes on the machines, whether you bought it from Quarterdeck Quilts or not. Her philosophy reflects Husqvarna Viking’s motto of “Keeping the World Sewing.” She uses her mechanical flare to perform the service work. She is methodical, careful, and thorough with each machine, treating them like each one was her own. She also helps with other brands as well, and welcomes any questions. “I don’t mind what brand of sewing machine you bring to class, I just want everyone to come and enjoy themselves,” Sandy said. Quarterdeck Quilts not only carries machines, they have a wide
selection of 100% cotton quilting fabrics as wells as other sewing fabrics including knits, denim, and batiste. You will find name brands like Moda, Kaufman, Timeless Treasures, Riley Blake and others. If you are in need of notions, unique buttons, zippers or any variety of sewing supplies, this is the place to find them. She also has stabilizers used for construction of quilts and garments. “We are a very customer directed business,” Sandy says. “If there is a tool you like, ask and we can find it for you. We like to let our customers guide our fabric choices as well, making sure we meet their needs and have the fabrics they are interested in working with.” Sandy stays up with the current trends in the sewing world by frequenting quilt and wholesale shows all over the country. She loves to shop almost as much as she loves to sew, so she makes sure to keep the latest patterns, notions and fabrics in her shop. She is always searching for those things that will make people say “That’s my next project!”. She also participates in local and regional quilt shows as a vendor selling fabrics, patterns and quilt kits made specifically for that show. Every fabric shop has its own flavor of fabric, mainly because there are thousands of fabrics out there. Quarterdeck quilts carries modern, colorful fabric. They also carry a large selection of marine and nautical themed fabrics, reflective of their coastal location. There are also an excellent selection of novelty fabrics including several sports team fabrics as well as holiday themed choices. “We like to choose fabric that catches the eye of the young, modern sewist,” Sandy says. Quarterdeck Quilt also offers a variety of classes. They have a basic beginners quilting class, in which Sandy teaches the entire process from beginning to binding. There are classes that focus on specific techniques. One of them is a free-motion machine quilting class, which is used to make art quilts. There are also classes for the embroidery machines, as well as serging classes. They have walls of fabrics to choose from to use during the classes, but you are also welcome to bring what you have. The class schedule is posted on the website, www.Qd-Q.com. “Any project that someone is working on, and runs into problems with or just has questions, I want them to come and ask us. No matter if you ever bought a machine or fabric here before, we love to help and share in the process” says Sandy. It’s this attitude that has people traveling from as far away as South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida on a regular basis to check out their newest fabrics and projects. Sandy Martin has turned her passion for sewing and quilting into a business. This business has grown into a community where like-minded crafters gather, share ideas and work together to inspire and create. Sandy says, “I love what I do, and I’m doing what I love.”

e are now almost to our 9th month of Lea’s Journey. We are all still amazed at the progress Lea has made, and the dedication she has shown to make this a life-changing experience. In this issue, we decided to let Lea tell you in her own words what this journey means to her today. From Lea Allen: I read a statement recently that said “Fall in love with the process, and the results will come.” I feel like that is my main focus right now. I have been practicing being in the state-ofmind of “Maintenance Mode”. Yes, it is nice seeing my progress on the scale weekly, but that is not what this journey is about to me. This journey is about making this a part of who I am, my lifestyle. It is about literally changing my relationship with food. So, I am practicing getting up and going to the gym, not because I want to lose weight, but because that is just who I am, and that is what I do. If I can have this mindset, then the results are going to come regardless. On October 25th, I will be participating in my first 5k, and my

goal is simply to cross the finish line! I have been training for this for the past several weeks and am very excited about it. A year ago, I would have never thought this would be possible. Each member on my team plays a unique role in my journey and I am forever grateful for each one of them. I want to express my gratitude for everyone in the community supporting me. I also want to thank the Effingham Magazine for allowing me this opportunity. The support has been overwhelming. At press time, Lea had lost an amazing 87 pounds, well on her way to her 100 pound goal. But, goals have changed, and as Lea stated, it is not just about watching the scales go down. Her goals now are more of a life-change. And, anyone who knows Lea can tell that she is accomplishing this as well. The entire staff of Effingham Magazine is very proud to watch Lea walk this path, a new path in her life. eth Pye and MaryJane Callaway have always enjoyed working together in creative endeavors. Sisters by blood, but friends by nature, these two have spent many hours together blending their creative strengths. The Cottage was originally started in 1985 as a hobby by Beth. This endeavor grew to be a blossoming business. Filling professional framing orders for customers such as Gulfstream Aerospace, Georgia Pacific and Weyerheauser, along with other
clients, have contributed to their success. In September 2013, this dynamic duo joined forces and opened a store front. With artistic energy in abundance, the pair are eager to design for each client. Being polar opposites, they bring different perspectives to the creative process. The believe each client is an individual and each creation is unique. argaret Edwards’ smile and gentle manner immediately puts you at ease. You can instantly tell she is one of those comforting people who never meets a stranger. This is one of the many reasons she is one of the best at what she does, the lead Mammographer and Radiologic Technologist at the Effingham Health Center. Margaret has an Associates Degree in Radiologic Technology from Armstrong State University and was ARRT certified in radiography. She was later Mammogram certified with the ARRT. She is amongst one of the first groups in the nation to receive that certification. She has been doing mammograms since 1988. Just some of her recent accolades include the Employee Of The Year in 2009, the 2013 C. Edward Helmly Humanitarian Award and a finalist for the Herb Jones Rotary Community Award. In 1978, when Margaret was in 8th grade, she visited the Effingham Hospital Radiology Department for a career day project. She quickly realized it was a way for her to mix her love of photography and her God-given gift as a caretaker into a career for herself. Later, she married Kyle Edwards, an operator at the sugar refinery. They’ve been together 29 years and have a son, Noah, a student at Effingham High School. They live in Clyo where Margaret grew up. Never straying too far from home, she attented college and spent her early working years in the Savannah area. But she knew she wanted to come back home to work. “I enjoy working here at home and being able to take care of the residents of our county. I chose to come back here to help take care of our own.” This also allows Margaret more time after work to attend things like her sons baseball games and activties with her church, Clyo United Methodist. October is Breast Cancer/Health Awareness month, something Margaret is very familiar with. “It’s very important to have
preventative care. Early detection is the best protection,” she states. She recommends that women have a screening mammogram between the ages of 35-40, and every year after age 40. Breast awareness is key, so that you notice any changes and can report them to your doctor. This can be done through simple breast self-exams at home. All women are succeptible to breast cancer. Many breast cancers can be treated successfully. However the sooner they are found, the higher the success rate in treating them. Some women may have a greater chance for breast cancer than most, depending on family history, genetic tendency or certain other factors. The best plan of action for all women to fight breast cancer and reduce their risk are yearly mammograms, clinical breast exams and self breast awareness. It’s never too late to start healthy behaviors. The Mammography department at Effingham Health Center is fully equipped to service all women’s needs. The hospital and the imaging center are both accredited by the FDA and the American College of Radiology. They look to further services offered in the future, continuing to offer the latest care residents need. “We were very excited to move to this location, because it gives us a more intimate area to care for our patients. We provide mammograms, ultra sounds and DEXA (bone density) tests, all in the same area,” Margaret says. They also offer ultra sound guided biopsies if needed by patients. Effingham County and the Effingham Health Center are lucky to have someone as knowledgeable on the subject of women’s health and mammography working to help in the fight against breast cancer. Margaret enjoys being able to help people from our area she’s known since childhood, as well as the newcomers. Margaret says,”One thing I’ve learned in my life, when talking to anyone, is that a smile goes a long way.”

He quickly realized the need to extend his own practice past Richmond Hill, opening a new location in Pooler. “There was a need for periodontists in Pooler, with many general dentists in the area. The new Pooler location also makes us more available to the patients in Effingham and surrounding areas,” Dr. Bordlemay stated. They now also have another doctor on board, Dr. Dustin Hedgpeth. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. A native of Mississippi, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Mississippi College, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2006. In 2010, he received his Doctor of Dental

He went on to complete his specialty training in periodontics and received his Master of Dental Science at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Hedgpeth and his wife, Brittney, have been happily married since 2010. In 2013, they welcomed their first son, Boston. He also enjoys outdoors activities including hunting, golf, and fishing. awn’s Karate and Fitness opened its doors in Rincon, Georgia in 1972. They are a family-owned and operated business. Since opening, they have taken great pride in treating every customer like they are a part of the family. The martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons: self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental, physical and spiritual development. The physical health and fitness aspect of this sport seems to be in the forefront of the mind of the average participant these days. Yawn’s Karate is the place in Effingham County to go for martial arts classes. For more than 40 years, Clif Yawn has been a martial arts luminary in Effingham County and beyond. Yawn,
a 52 year resident of Effingham County, was the first to introduce Karate here. It all started back in the 1970s when Yawn was away working a construction job in Kentucky. One of his co-workers was a brown belt in Karate. Yawn learned some moves. As soon as he got back home, Yawn looked for a Karate teacher. He found a school in Savannah and immediately enrolled himself and his two sons. Yawn and his sons eventually grew weary of commuting back and forth to Savannah, so he built a small 20’ x 20’ room atop his home in Rincon. There, he and his boys, Jeff and Glenn, worked out. It wasn’t long at all before others asked to work out with them, so he began instructing. Today, Yawn’s school serves about 75 students of every age and skill level. “I think a lot of young ones now are inspired by the movies,” he said. “Parents want their kids to get into it, especially the young girls, which is a good thing. They should definitely get some martial arts background now because it will help protect them later on.” Entire families come because they want to work out together, and often continue there for years. Then, there are the troubled kids. A parent will bring in a child to Yawn and say they are out of control. Once enrolled, the student is required to listen to the instruction of the teachers. They are expected to do their chores at home. When they address their mother, it’s yes ma’am and no ma’am. They are taught to be respectful and to do well in school. Naturally, the school competes in tournaments. Team spirit is strong. Discipline, respect and loyalty are always the order of the day. “We go to tournaments as a team,” said Yawn. “We support each other. We fight individually but we work as a team.” Also on the premises at 250 Chimney Road, there is a fully equipped, state-of-the-art gym. The gym boasts over 7500 square feet of workout space. Anisa is a clinical evaluator for DUI offenders and provides evaluations for those seeking to reinstate their driver’s license. She is a featured author in “The Success of Weight loss Surgery Patients” and has been recognized with the distinguished “Licensee of the Year” Award presented by Bariatric Support Centers International in 2010, 2011, and again in 2012.
