In this edition

to the Spring edition My Halcyon Days.

Weoflcome A few years ago we made the decision to sell our family home. A home that our three grown up children loved to come and visit.

Leaving family and friends?

Retiring from all that was familiar, how would I fill my days?

Initially, the journey to Halcyon was shrouded in doubt, but now, looking back my worries and concerns seem laughable.

Finding my groove came easier than I ever imagined, it only took the courage to walk out the front door. Invitations to join community events came rolling in, and just like a kid in a candy shop the only issue was deciding what I’d like to try next.

With 43 separate interest groups waiting to be discovered, I dived into a whirlpool of socialising, golf, dancing, pickleball, cards and committees. It was a frantic start, but I soon relaxed into an enjoyable round of doing what brings joy and fulfilment to my day. It was easy to find the way forward.

Aside from a neighbourhood blessed with a living library of interesting people, our Social Club keeps the heart of our community beating with fabulous entertainers and unique ways to celebrate special occasions. Whether it’s a Rock & Roll night, a Sunday Roast or a relaxed Friday night at the Lodge with friends, there’s always fun to be had.

Community lifestyle was not what I thought it would be, it’s better.

Here at Halcyon, we have the opportunity to ‘Live our best life’.

Snap happy couple take first prize

fter 47 years of marriage, A the banter and sense of cheeky fun between Gay and Murray Speden is engaging to be around.

The pair, who separately won the Judge’s and the People’s Choice awards in the recent photography competition held at Halcyon Greens, rib each other as they compare their entries.

“Murray is serious about it and he’s got all the gear,” Gay said.

“We have been all over the world and Murray has taken some beautiful photos.

“I literally just point and

shoot with my phone.”

Gay’s entry was a joint winner with Nadine Swanney for the People’s Choice category and shows a crackling and shimmering fire.

Murray said: “I may have all the gear but I shot mine on my phone as well.”

“I literally got out of bed and walked out to the balcony and saw there was mist, which we don’t get that often.

“I thought ‘that’s a great shot.’”

writing to produce some fascinating and entertaining fiction which is inspired by real life events.

“I love writing,” Helen said.

“There are no restrictions in your mind, you can explore anything your imagination comes up with.

Her latest effort, which took out first prize in the inaugural Halcyon Greens’s Writing Competition takes the reader to the majestic Karijni National Park in Western Australia.

“The story in ‘Don’t Look’ actually happened”.

The short story offers a humourous glimpse at a real life encounter with some immodest

“I like to use historical events and take an artistic license to expand on those stories and make them

enjoyable,” she said.

The former travel agent and marketing manager has also completed a travel blog and a book for children, which she’s planning to submit to publishers in the hope it might be released.

Helen has taken a number of courses at the Byron Writer’s Centre and has used what she learned to dabble in fiction and travel blogs.

A hero lives next door

Mike Smith, Halcyon Lakeside

ou won’t catch Mike Smith wearing a Y cape, but this irrepressible Halcyon Lakeside resident is a hero, nonetheless.

Mike will be awarded the Australian Bravery Medal this month in recognition of his heroism as a marine rescue volunteer, displaying considerable bravery during the rescue attempt of a race yacht crew in treacherous seas off the coast near Port Stephens in New South Wales on 6 January 2016.

Mike was the engineer and one of seven crew members aboard rescue vessel Port Stephens 40, which was called in to assist a yachting crew that had fallen foul of cyclonic conditions just south of Seal Rocks. While rendering aid, Mike’s vessel was hit by a rogue wave, sending the crew flying and tipping Port Stephens 40 on its portside.

“I was on the top deck with a searchlight, and I felt this surge coming from behind me on the starboard side,” Mike recalled. “I grabbed hold of everything, we had lifelines attached of course, and over she went.”

Propellors in the air, Port Stephens 40 and its crew were pummelled by a second and third wave before Mike was able to restart the engine, allowing the skipper to right the vessel as the rescued yacht crew made it safely ashore in a life raft.

Now 78 and having stepped back from marine rescue duties, Mike said he is excited about receiving the Bravery Medal, which will be presented by the Governor-General of Queensland at Government House on 22 September.

“I think it’s a great award and a great reward, not that you’re looking for that when you’re in the middle of six- to eight-metre waves and trying to rescue somebody,” he laughed.

“I feel a bit humbled, but I’m very pleased that the whole crew are being awarded the Bravery Medal, not just a couple of us.”

Mike lives with his wife Sandy at the awardwinning Halcyon Lakeside community in the coastal suburb of Bli Bli, where they enjoy the relaxed lifestyle afforded by thoughtful streetscapes and world-class facilities.

The pair made the move from NSW four years ago.

fter downsizing from a fourA bedroom house in Varsity Lakes, Megan found living in a

two-bedroom apartment in Robina on her own was isolating and lonely.

When COVID hit last year and restrictions brought an end to her group activities such as book clubs, knitting groups and social card games, Megan found her world became even smaller without her social network and family nearby.

“I lived in an apartment by myself for three years and it was a reclusive kind of existence,” Megan said.

“I’m a very social person so my experience of apartment living prompted the move to Halcyon and now my life has improved dramatically because there are people here who actually care.

“At any age, it can be intimidating to find a community outside of family, work or hobbies, so I welcomed the opportunity to move into Halcyon 8

Rise and have activities, groups and a built-in community on site.”

As one of the first homeowners at Halcyon Rise, Megan is now involved in several social activities including a craft group and helped to set up the onsite library.

“We also have a happy hour every Thursday where we talk and laugh and because of that, we know each other,” she said.

Megan is looking forward to the completion of the onsite recreational facilities at Halcyon Rise, which includes a heated lap pool, walking and cycling tracks, pickleball courts, full-size bowling green and a fully equipped gym.

“I’m very excited for the facilities to be completed and my goal is to go swimming, try the exercise workouts, play pickleball and learn to play bowls – there is just so much to do.”

The location of Halcyon Rise at Logan Reserve was also a plus

for Megan, offering safety within the gated community as well as being close to both Brisbane and the Gold Coast where her son and daughter live respectively.

“Everything is so close and you don’t need to leave your community to find everything you need within the neighbourhood of Logan Reserve,” she said.

While Megan was ready to make the move from apartment living to a lifestyle community, she recommends that people do their research first and to find out whether this style of living is suited to their needs.

“I have nothing to regret about moving to an over 50s lifestyle community because Halcyon Rise has the security, community and connection with like-minded people that I was looking for,” Megan said.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to at Halcyon says they wish they had moved here sooner.”

MOTHER-AND-DAUGHTER DUO THANGAM AND MEERA NAIR FOUND THEIR FOREVER HOME hangam and Meera Nair hadn’t T planned on downsizing so soon, but when the upkeep of their four-bedroom home and pool in Springwood became too much, Meera said she was sold on the Halcyon lifestyle concept.

“I looked into Halcyon and I liked the fact that the house belongs to you and if you sell, the capital gains are yours and there are no exit or management fees,” Meera said.

The Nairs were among the first homeowners at Halcyon Rise, located in Logan Reserve, nestled between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The duo selected a three-bedroom, single-level home that would allow easy accessibility for Thangam, who has difficulty with stairs.

Meera said the spacious and comfortable home is light and bright with plenty of space for peace of mind as they age and require additional mobility assistance in the future.

“It feels like a home – like you are coming home to a normal house in a normal suburb, but with the added benefits of security in a gated community,” Meera said.

Thangam and Meera have settled into Halcyon Rise and enjoy the warm and

welcoming community atmosphere and getting to know their neighbours.

“We lived in our old house in Springwood for 10 years and hardly knew our neighbours – we didn’t have the time as our lives were moving so quickly and separately,” Meera said.

“We’re at a stage in our lives now where we are mostly at home, so when we do walk around Halcyon Rise and bump into others it makes a difference – and that’s what this community is about.

“It makes you feel good to have a conversation with people who have time for you as well.”

The couples had discussed ‘next steps’ with each other, tossing up ideas to buy land and build homes together when Mal Semple saw a TV commercial for Halcyon.

“I knew that Dr Bevan Geissmann had started Halcyon many years ago as he had been our family GP for a long time,” Mal said.

“We went for a drive to see Halcyon Rise, which is only five minutes from our acreage in Buccan, and it started to tick a lot of boxes.”

They told their friends about their discovery and Paul Creamer admits they weren’t “greatly enthused” with idea until they came and visited for themselves.

“I’m in the building industry and I had worked on a few of Halcyon’s competitors so I wasn’t that excited about the prospect until we went and looked at a Halcyon community and things fell into place,” he said.

Julie added: “We were really excited by what we saw and we really have Mal to thank for coming and finding it first. I’m ready to move in right now.”

Mal said he and his wife were “blown away” at how fast their longtime friends committed to a home at Halcyon Rise.

“From our perspective it’s pretty cool that we will be moving into the same community together,” he said.

“We’ve been camping at Kingscliff together for 20 years, so the plan is to hook the caravan up and hit the road.”

While the two couples won’t be directly next to each other this time around, they will be very close when they move into their homes later next year.

Out of 23 new homes on offer in the first release of Stage 2, 16 of them were snapped up by buyers keen to move into the community, which welcomed its first homeowners in March.

Project Director Glenn Nugent said the successful event, worth $8.94 million in property sales, had drawn buyers from nearby suburbs including all across SEQ and nearby suburbs including Springwood, Montville, Coopers Plains with one from the Canberra region.

“There has been a great deal of anticipation for these homes, particularly from buyers living within a 20km radius of the community,” he said.

“We have had huge demand for this stage as it contains homes located closer to facilities as well as Flindersia Park, Logan’s newest riverside public park.”

Mr Nugent said Halcyon Rise appealed to buyers who are wanting relaxed country living, due to its rural feel and its close proximity to Brisbane, Gold Coast and the hinterland.

“We have reached 100 sales in the community very quickly with 95 per cent of Stage 1 sold combined with the 70 per cent of this release.”

To conserve and protect

John Tucker, Halcyon Landing

alcyon Landing homeowner H John Tucker is doing his part to make the Maroochy Wetlands a better place for everyone.

John is the President and Secretary of the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary Support Group Inc. (MWSSGI), an organisation devoted to protecting and preserving the complex ecosystem that backs on to Halcyon Landing in Bli Bli. “The Wetlands are an old sanctuary,” John explained.

“It’s about 100 hectares and borders the edge of Halcyon Landing. It contains an interesting transition from almost rainforest through to mangroves through to other intermediate forest types.

“A little bit of rainforest, some Teatree, melaleuca forest, casuarina 16

forest and then you get down to the mangrove forest.

“There’s not too many places where in a short distance you can see this transition occurring.”

Since joining the group around 10 years ago, John has been an organisational force in the group, using his project management skills to support the environmental work of the volunteers.

“Most of my professional life was spent in geotechnical engineering, which is the ground, soils, materials – close to the earth. In recent years as a consultant, I’ve also been involved in environmental studies as well,” he said.

John and his wife Heather have been Bli Bli locals for nearly 40 years, moving into Halcyon Landing eight years ago from their house up on the hill.

“Because we know that Bli Bli is an extraordinarily central and accessible area on the Sunshine Coast, we didn’t want to move anywhere else,” John said.

“Halcyon Landing as a site presented the most opportunities for maintaining the network that we already had from over 30 years in Bli Bli.” John says he and Heather enjoy the sense of community that Halcyon Landing offers, allowing them to enjoy the lifestyle at their own pace.

“We can do whatever we like,” John said.

“Both of us volunteer in various ways within the community. I still lead an emergency response group; Heather has been active in a social group. We’ve contributed as well as taken advantage of the attractions that are here.”

M

otoring enthusiasts Robert and Sandra Boone are accustomed to turning heads in their vintage cars, the latest a 1959 white MG TF.

“We’ve had Jaguars, BMWs and even a gold Porsche with gold wheels,“ Robert said.

“People made a fuss about the Porsche.”

Sandra laughed: “The police used to follow him in that one!”

“I haven’t driven it though, I’m not up for that.”

The couple, who live at Halcyon Greens, have owned the MG for around six years having bought it from a collector who had installed a Mazda engine and gearbox, making it a 5-speed instead of a 4-speed.

“One of the other benefits of having a Mazda engine is that you can drive into any Mazda dealership and have it serviced.”

Over the years the pair have been incredibly active in car clubs and spent many weekends on jaunts around the countryside.

“I just love cars,” Robert said. “They have been a passion of mine ever since I was old enough to drive one.”

There’s this group called The Halcyon Parks’ Pacers. At dawn each Friday we stride the Sunshine Coast’s scenic walkways, sniffing out eggs and bacon.

I’m sure you understand that in addition to bashing together a script, there’s one or two other small details involved in ‘doing’ a play. We didn’t.

Aiming for two shows in November, 20 actors joined vocalists and a technical crew to begin rehearsing Cook, with Music! last February.

One beautiful sunrise in 2019, a few of us paused on Moffat Headland. Out to sea was a sailing ship beating north with the rising sun on its starboard bow.

Breakfast on Kings isn’t where you discuss details. You concentrate on your acai bowl. You don’t consider stuff like actors, lights, sound, music, costumes, props or money.

Somehow, that always sorts out magically back at Halcyon Parks.

Cook, with Music! is an historical musical comedy. There’s tragedy, sadness, romance and eventually some compromise and reconciliation.

Perhaps Captain Cook, on the same sparkling sea 250 years earlier, might have hove-to and surfed ashore. Imagine that for a minute.

Back at Kings Beach for breakfast, with suitable fanfare, I announced to the rest of the group that I would write a play about Cook’s visit to Moffat Beach. “That’s nice,” they said.

Believe me they’re very good!

Cook’s real purpose is to feed enthusiasm to form a Drama Company. If we succeed, perhaps other communities might try the same.

It just takes a walk and some imagination.

Sew, it’s come to this Christine Stuer, Lynn Whybrow and Lyn Taylor

titch by stitch, Halcyon S Lakeside homeowner Lynn Whybrow is helping make a difference for kids in need.

Lynn is the convenor of the Stitcher’s Hub in the Bli Bli community, a group which began as a sewing get-together and has grown into a volunteer workforce of tailors giving new life to old clothes.

“It started when Halcyon Lakeside first opened, which is nearly five years ago,” Lynn said.

“It started in somebody’s house and then we got bigger and moved down to a craft room within the recreation club, then that got too small after a while.

“There was another room being used for something else and Halcyon turned it into the Stitcher’s Hub, which is quite a large room, but we use every inch of it.”

The Stitcher’s Hub are using their sewing expertise to support the work of Uniform 4 Kids, a charity that repurposes old government, police and fire uniforms into clothes for disadvantaged children around Australia.

“My main forte is dressmaking, that’s one of my loves,” Lynn said.

“I heard about Uniforms 4 Kids and thought it was something we could do and now we get a load of old uniforms which we unpick and turn into kids clothing.

“They’re usually quite fun clothes but they’re also quite practical clothes. Mainly skirts, shorts and little tops ... the organisers have given us some really good ideas and it’s just limited by your imagination.”

Lynn and her husband David came to Halcyon Lakeside as one of the first homeowners, only six weeks after it opened. A retired accountant, Lynn said they enjoy the idyllic coastal setting and the casual, go-at-yourown-pace lifestyle of the community, which has won two national awards.

“We like the outlook here, it’s absolutely beautiful,” she said.

“We really enjoy the community spirit here and I think if you lived in a house in the suburbs now, it would be really lonely.”

Even though retirement savings mechanisms have been around Australia since 1900 the super system as we know it today was formed in 1992. The system has been evolving ever since and now Australia has one of the most well-funded retirement systems in the world.

One recent change to super contributions took effect on 1 July 2018 and is known as the ‘Downsizer Contribution’. It is designed for those who have sold their principal place of residence and enables them to put a portion of the sale proceeds directly into their super account.

• The home must have been owned by you or your spouse for 10 years or more prior to the sale.

• You must make the downsizer contribution within 90 days of receiving the proceed of sale.

• If eligible, you can make a maximum of $300,000 (each) and the contribution amount cannot be greater than the total proceeds of the sale of your home.

If you are thinking of downsizing or have recently done so, please seek professional advice before taking action. This is a great way to pump more money into what I believe in my professional opinion (as an American who moved to Australia around two decades ago) is the world’s best retirement system!

It’s a great strategy for anyone who wants to top up their super and there are some rules you need to be aware of. Here are some of the biggies: • You must be 65 years old or older at the time you make the downsizer contribution and there is no maximum age limit.

DOWNSIZERS SWAP WORK FOR AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST LIFESTYLE aking advantage of the government’s T downsizing provisions Tony and Daphne McDade were able to retire early while being able to add $400,000 to their superannuation fund.

Tony said the pair had sought professional advice from a financial planner a few years ago as part of their plans to transition to retirement.

“He was able to take us through a few different scenarios and give us some good advice to make the most of our money,” Tony said.

The couple sold their longtime family home in Carindale and were able to buy a corner block at Halcyon Greens, where they were able to build a new home.

“We were both able to put an additional $200,000 each into our super funds and it also meant we could retire earlier to Halcyon,” Tony said.

The pair now spend their days enjoying the best the community has to offer.

“Tony plays four games of golf each week and I’m really involved with the social club and doing crafts,” Daphne said. “It really is a great life, we love it.”

B by Halcyon has a dedicated circuit gym with a selection of exercise equipment, free weights and amenities such as kettlebells, dumbbells, mats and Bosu balls. Each circuit class consists

of two rounds of 15 different strength or cardio exercises with one minute at each station. It’s a comprehensive workout with real benefits and everyone is so happy and easy-going – it’s a pleasure to teach!

I also offer deep tissue and Swedish relaxation massage as well as gentle vinyasa yoga classes. I love seeing the change in people, especially with yoga. I see such a difference in their progress and how much better they feel when they build their strength, fitness and flexibility. He’s taken a step into semi-retirement to concentrate on his fiction writing, while relishing the chance to share his unique take on life with My Halcyon Days’ readers.

O when my wife asked, “Do you want to try tai S chi?”, I thought she’d said chai tea which I hastily explained I wouldn’t touch because I prefer my hot drinks with LOTS of caffeine, thank you very much.

And therein lies my problem, according to her. My “silly” reliance on caffeine (although, to be honest, she should have been more worried about my total ignorance of relaxation activities, or at the very least my hearing).

We went back and forth on various practises around mindfulness, meditation and mindlessness. Well, one thing led to another (that’s code for I was told what to do next) and a week later I found myself in a pair of precariously wide-legged shorts doing various yoga positions, of which the only one I found remotely relaxing was the “corpse pose”. Well, lying on your back, on a 1mm-thin yoga mat in a room with 20 other people all trying to be perfectly still and quiet was, well, weird. We must have looked like a Madame Tussauds storage room after a very strong breeze had rushed through the place.

And let me tell you, that strong breeze hadn’t entirely left the room – there was a stomach grumbling away quite threateningly to the left of me. The poor woman was trying her utmost to be mindful. But all she could be mindful of was the bulging bubble of gas travelling through her lower intestines that could, at any moment, make an unexpected and loudly trumpeted arrival.

Someone get George Bush and Hans Blix on speed dial, I think we’re about to finally discover a weapon of mass destruction … well, distraction at the very least.

The thought of that got me giggling ... which distracted everyone … which made the instructor scowl at me.

And then the woman beside me made what we called in the 1980s, an “extended 12-inch dance remix” of a distraction … which got me howling with laughter … which was a mass distraction for everyone and weaponised the instructor to point at me and explode into an unintelligible, un-yoga-like rant that effectively meant I was ordered to leave the room and never come back, apparently not in his godforsaken lifetime, or something…

I guess relaxation and meditation isn’t for me. I’ll just go grab a coffee and think about that.

Bowled over BUDDHA AND POKE BOWLS HAVE BEEN GROWING IN POPULARITY AND ARE PERHAPS THE EASIEST, MOST COLOURFUL AND HEALTHY OPTIONS FOR A QUICK MEAL. THE BEAUTY OF THESE BOWLS IS YOU CAN ADD ANY INGREDIENT WHICH APPEALS – THERE’S NO RIGHT OR WRONG WAY – IT’S ALL UP TO INDIVIDUAL CHOICE.

Buddha Bowl Serves 4 Named after Buddha, who would carry a bowl with him and accept food as donations, which he would eat at the end of the day. Originally these were predominately vegan and vegetarian, but you can always add a meat-based protein of choice.

Start with a bowl of rice and go from there.

Here are some ideas – ☐ ¾ cup cooked rice (brown, wild or mixed with quinoa). ☐ 1 can legumes such as canned chickpeas, kidney beans or lentils. ☐ 2 cups of (any combination of) vegetables which steam well such as sugar snap peas, snow peas, edamame beans, broad beans, cauliflower, zucchini or broccoli. ☐ 4 cups of chopped raw vegetables (of any combination) such as onion, sprouts, cabbage, kale, English spinach, mushrooms, carrot, cucumber and fresh grated beetroot. ☐ 2 avocadoes (slice ½ for each person). ☐ Sesame seeds, pepitas or nuts for added crunch. ☐ Dressing of choice – experiment with different types including Green Goddess or yoghurt-based ones.

Method Assemble all ingredients into individual bowls, sprinkle pepitas or nuts and serve with dressing. Only add avocado If you are planning to serve immediately, otherwise it will turn brown. Pour dressing over the top and enjoy. If there are leftovers, you can always store in a container and add dressing and avocado when you’re ready to eat.

Poke Bowl

HAWAIIAN IN ORIGIN - THE WORD POKE (PRONOUNCED POH-KAY) MEANS TO SLICE OR CUT – AND IS TRADITIONALLY MADE WITH FRESH DICED RAW SASHIMI-STYLE SALMON AND TUNA. THESE INCREDIBLY FRESH AND TASTY BOWLS CAN BE SERVED ON A BED OF RICE, NOODLES OR GREENS WITH FRESH VEGETABLES, SEAWEED AND PICKLED GINGER.

Depending on whether you are limiting your carbohydrate intake, choose from steamed sushi rice, brown rice, coconut rice, soba noodles or leafy greens. Rice should always be served warm while noodles are cold.

Traditionally served with raw or marinated fish such as salmon or tuna, feel free to add something different if you don’t like raw fish such as fresh cooked prawns, chicken or cooked tofu if you want a vegetarian option.

When it comes to vegetables, you really are only limited by your imagination and your tastes. Most authentic poke bowls will include avocado, carrot, cucumber, red onion, capsicum, corn, pickled ginger, seaweed, edamame beans, radish, spinach, kale or fresh beetroot.

The type of dressing for your poke bowl will largely depend the protein component. If you’ve gone for raw fish, stick with Asian inspired dressings and sauces such as miso, tamari, ponzu. If you’ve chosen chicken or vegetarian, a satay style dressing would work well.

There are lots of ingredients such as sesame seeds, pepitas, fried shrimp or onions, wasabi peas, croutons, nuts, which add to the texture of the poke bowl.

– Aim for 1-2 cups of vegetables per serve.

– Add dressing according to taste.

– Aim for around ¾ - 1 cup of rice or noodles per serve, extra if you’ve chosen greens.
