C

ameron Smith had a vision for a polo club and school in Seattle. He started with a foreclosed equestrian center outside Enumclaw and leveled 12 acres to build a polo field – doing most of the work himself. It took 3 years to play the first summer polo season where 300 people came out to watch the first practice on the new field. The facility continues to grow and expand to support the growing sport. Today the Seattle Polo & Equestrian Club is a shining beacon of the future of polo in the Pacific Northwest, hosting tournaments, parties and events, as well as polo clinics and lessons.

AFTER

SEATTLE POLO & EQUESTRIAN CLUB CLINICS & LESSONS The Seattle Polo & Equestrian Club is centrally located in the Seattle-Tacoma area just outside Enumclaw, Washington. The facility is located less than an hour from downtown Seattle, 45 minutes from Bellevue and 30 minutes from Tacoma. 25901 SE 400th Street Enumclaw WA 98022

POLO CLINIC Seattle Polo provides an Introduction to Polo Program specially designed for adults looking to try a new sport. You'll learn the basics of polo and how riding for polo compares to other equestrian sports. For anyone wanting to learn polo and take lessons, the intro to polo clinic is strongly advised. The clinic is where you'll learn rules of the game and get the foundations a player needs to play in chukkers with other players. The clinic consists of a morning session with covering horsemanship and technique followed by lunch and an afternoon session with more instruction and a scrimmage. You'll be on a horse in the morning to learn how to hit a ball and in the afternoon for scirmmage. Professional polo players will guide your every move to help make your experience fun and educational. This is a great way for you to experience polo in a safe and controlled atmosphere. Riding experience helps, but is not required to learn polo. You'll need your riding helmet, jeans, a comfortable shirt and riding boots with a heel. We provide mallets and the polo ponies.

POLO SCHOOL The Seattle Polo & Equestrian Club offers polo instruction throughout the summer. Players take individual instruction, join a group lesson or compete in coaching league chukkers. There are many options to select that best fit your schedule and enthusiasm. Coaching chukkers are done weekly on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. Individual lessons are scheduled around practice, but mostly weekday afternoons between 1-5 p.m.

THE GAME OF POLO KEY TERMS FOR TODAY'S MATCHES THE GAME OF POLO A sport unlike any other, polo showcases the powerful bond between a player and the pony. As one of the oldest team sports, polo is a combination of horsepower, athleticism and control. Competing on a 300x160 yard grass field, players score by driving the ball through the opposing team’s goal using a bamboo mallet while riding at speeds of up to 35 mph.

PLAY Plays are based on the “line of the ball,” an imaginary line created by the ball as it travels down the field. It represents a right-of-way for the last player striking the ball, and is the basis for most fouls in the game. Players may try to hook to “ride off” their opponents in an effort to gain control of the ball.

TEAMS AND HANDICAPS A team consists of four mounted players and can be a mix of both men and women. Players are handicapped on a scale from -2 to 10, as determined by the player’s horsemanship, hitting ability, quality of horses and game sense. The team handicap is the sum of the players’ total handicaps. A player’s jersey number reflects the position they play, with each number indicating a different objective.

THE HORSES The real stars of polo are referred to traditionally as ponies. An old rule limiting their height was dropped in 1919. Today’s players prefer horses

with a Thoroughbred’s speed and stamina in their bloodlines. These four-legged athletes can run two miles in a single chukker: sevenand-a-half minutes of starting, shopping, swapping from offense to defense in a single stride. The polo pony’s mane is buzzed short and its tail wrapped as not to entangle the reins, mallets or other equipment.

GEAR OF THE GAME

EQUIPMENT

Polo plates are special, lightweight horseshoes made of iron with an inner and outer rim.

Polo players wear a helmet, kneehigh boots, white breeches, a jersey and carry a polo mallet in the right hand during play. The mallet is made of a bamboo shaft measuring between 48 and 54 inches in length with a wooden head. The game ball is more often made of plastic and is comparable to the size of a baseball.

OFFICIALS During matches, two mounted umpires officiate o the field while a referee assists from the sidelines. The rules of polo are designed to allow both the players and their equine partners the opportunity to maximize their athletic skills in a safe and fair environment.

HALFTIME As a sport steeped in tradition, it’s only fitting that the “divot stomp” is one of polo’s oldest practices. At halftime, spectators are invited to walk onto the field to socialize and replace the divots made by the ponies’ hooves during play. The ten-minute break in the middle of the game gives players and ponies a chance to rest and regroup.

The team jersey sports the sponsor’s name, the team color and the player’s number of the position from which he or she plays (from 1 to 4). The breast plate stops the saddle from slipping back and the overgirth fits over the saddle securing it in case the girth breaks.

Riding boots typically have a front zipper and are always brown in polo. The helmet is required equipment. The most common helmets are made of reinforced, padded composites with a cloth or leather covering. They are modeled after the pith helmets of the British in 19th century India. The bit controls the horse. Polo players use many different kinds of bit, most commonly the gag bit. Knee pads provide protection from flying balls and rough ride-offs. The mallet is made of cane or bamboo. It has a fair amount of “whip” and can bend quite a bit during a hard swing. The mallet head is wooden. The sides of the head are used to hit the ball. Draw reins run form the player’s hand through the big rings and then back to the saddle. They are used in addition to the normal reins, so a polo bridle has two sets of reins.
