Excellence For All. TRANSFORMING THE CAMPUS. Tonbridge is at an exciting stage in its long history, and we have bold and ambitious plans to ensure that we remain at the forefront of educational innovation, not only in the UK but throughout the world. Central to these plans is the creation of a dynamic, state-of-the-art Science Centre that will be as visionary as the original 1887 building was in its day and will transform the ways Science subjects are taught at Tonbridge.

Our plans have been shaped by significant changes in the way that modern Science is being taught at university, with much greater emphasis on interdisciplinary collaborations across subject boundaries.

At the same time, teaching practice is fast evolving towards encouraging more independent learning styles enabling our students to become self-motivated and creative learners. It is important that we mirror these developments, thereby preparing our boys for university and for the collaborative careers that lie ahead of them.

Since we launched the Excellence for All campaign, more than ÂŁ15m has been invested in our campus developments, helping to transform the School and ensure the education we provide is of the highest standard. Fundraising to date Thanks to the support and generosity of parents, past and present, OTs and Friends of the School, we have so far raised an astonishing £4.5m with over 850 members of the Tonbridge School community having donated to date.

We now need to raise the final £1.5m to reach our £6m campaign target to enable us to start work on the new Science Centre.

FUTURE OF SCIENCE. The boundaries between sciences are blurring more and more as we move into the 21st century.

Increasingly, scientists work in collaborative teams bringing together a range of strengths to solve problems in biochemistry, biophysics and physical chemistry.

At the same time, advances in technology and Science are transforming our world at an incredible pace, and our students’ future will be filled with leaps in technology we can only imagine.

The aim of the new Science Centre at Tonbridge is to transform the boys’ experience of science and to stimulate aspiration and ambition for a wide range of Science careers.

This new facility puts Science at the very heart of the school with access to

Mathematics, Social Sciences and proximity to Design Technology. Central to the design is a generous atrium space for lectures, experiments and events.

Elsewhere the building will also have areas for group work and private study, project rooms, a greenhouse and a roof top garden.

The main teaching areas for Chemistry, Physics and Biology will be located over three floors, with each subject benefiting from additional spacious and well-equipped teaching laboratories.

Our plans for a state-of-the-art science centre will have a direct impact on the way current and future generations of pupils study science.

– A n environment that actively encourages innovation and creative inter-disciplinary collaboration, resulting in a richer and more stimulating student experience and even better academic results – Participation with universities and industry – Additional space for practical work with the potential to introduce longer-running experiments which will no longer need to be dismantled at the end of each class – A lecture theatre and latest audio-visual aids capable of hosting lectures, science demonstrations and other school events – More scope to innovate and disseminate best practice teaching, and to be recognised as a centre of excellence for Science – A facility that will help the School to attract, retain and train the best Science teachers in the country.

Cabling and pipework are left deliberately exposed to show students how the building actually ‘works’.

Collaborative space Based around a central shared atrium where students can meet, interact and access resources.

The atrium will be located in the re-designed existing science building.

Breakout space Located on the top floor, students can interact outside of lesson time, and have access to the roof garden that will provide exciting opportunities such as outdoor experiments, gardening and even star-gazing.

The Project Funding.

In 1553 Tonbridge School was founded thanks to an extraordinary act of philanthropy by one man; Sir Andrew Judde. Since then, the generosity of countless others has resulted in the Tonbridge we know today.

We recognise the need to invest the School’s own resources in making a project like this a reality, but for an organisation with an annual turnover of approximately £25m this is a very major undertaking and it will only be possible with significant philanthropic support.

The Judd Foundation and loans will fund £14m towards the project and the School will invest £3m from cash flow and reserves.

The Excellence for All Campaign will provide the remaining £3m, of which £1.5m has already been raised.

The total for the Science Centre has been estimated at £20m inclusive of ‘fees’, VAT and inflation.

We now need as many of you as possible to be part of the biggest act of philanthropy for a generation, to help raise the funds required to deliver the next chapter in the School’s proud history.
