WELCOME from our OR President

A

very warm welcome to you as you delve into the 2017 edition of the Reeder, which offers us a new beginning with a new design. This was inspired by the remarkable and humbling story of OR Alex van Holk, whose story you can read in the Main Feature. I must admit that it was the front cover photograph of Alex, featured in a mock-up of the proposed new design, that convinced me we should make the changes; I am sure you will be similarly inspired by Alex’s story and I hope you will enjoy our new format. I also hope that you will approve of our decision to move the annual publication date to the autumn so we can capture news from the full school year.

Even though we are embarking on a new beginning with this publication, I am delighted to say that now we also have greater visibility into the past through the launch of Reed’s Heritage, an online archive of everything about the School going back as far as our research can take us.

I would urge you to log in to the Heritage website (reedsschoolheritage.co.uk) and wander through the sections to see what interests you, always bearing in mind that this is a live project that will see more material added as time and funds allow.

Once again, I must mention Andy Wotton (Mullens 1975) and his extraordinary commitment and drive to making this project happen, working alongside Sharmaine, Meg Fitzgerald and other colleagues. I would particularly point you towards Andy’s research on The War Years which extends the work he did on completing (and correcting!) the Remembrance Boards in the School Chapel. I know others have worked tirelessly alongside the team to make this project a success (you know who you are) and each of you deserves our thanks which I am delighted to record here.

So, how much do you remember about your time at Reed’s, your contemporaries or, perhaps, later years with the Old Reedonians? An OR magazine, or more accurately a newsletter, was published twice a year in and around the time I left, and I discovered in one of them the destinations of several Mullens housemates after they left the School; a little more research will help me build a better picture of my contemporaries who passed out of sight and mind as we went our separate ways. I also discovered, for example, that I did a stint as the OR Auditor back in the late 70s/early 80s after I had resigned (or been sacked?!) as OR Cricket Captain. I had no recollection of that at all but memories are now stirring.

I am immensely proud of the extra-ordinary contributions made by ORs of all vintages to the daily life of the School.

I laughed at the late, great Nick Simmons’ report on OR cricket of a similar vintage, although the batting averages reminded me that some of us were never as good as we think we were – if only we had had Reed’s new cricket centre to practise in!

Read all about that and its importance to future funding of the Foundation later in this edition. With that in mind, I’m delighted to report that the OR Committee approved a donation of £25,000 towards the cricket centre costs, using funds accumulated many years ago, and this donation will be memorialised in a display board that will remind all visitors to the centre of its essential role in providing a regular income stream to the Foundation – it is, truly, a legacy project!

Reminiscing about the past year or so, many highlights come to mind. We enjoyed a wonderful OR Reunion Day

at the end of June, with those celebrating a decade anniversary invited to lunch ahead of the general invitation to tea. The weather was kind, the hospitality from the School was excellent, the cricket looked to be at a scarily high standard and the planning and organisation was, as always, superb. Many “thank yous” were delivered at the time and are repeated here in the aggregate, but I must, of course, tip my hat to Sharmaine and her colleagues in the Development Office: Alison, Ed, Lucy and Ruth, under the leadership of Kathryn, each of whom contributes so much to both Reunion Day and the OR community generally. We all owe grateful thanks for their wonderful support and, for those of you who haven’t been to the School for a while, you will always be assured of a warm welcome from Sharmaine and the ‘Team’. Do take the opportunity to join us next year.

Looking through the reports in this edition of The Reeder, as President of the ORs I am immensely proud of the extraordinary contributions made by ORs of all vintages to the daily life of the School.

You will read elsewhere of the ways in which ORs help current pupils and the Foundation on multiple occasions through the year, and I would like to highlight the contribution of Peter Verstage (Capel 1965) who stepped down as a Reed’s Governor after 10 years of committed service. As well as sitting on the main Governing Board, Peter held positions on various sub-committees – notably the Finance Committee and Marketing Committee, always adding value to the discussions and decisions made. Peter made me very welcome as a new Governor in 2014; I hope he enjoys his ‘retirement’ although I’m sure we will see him at Reed’s on many occasions in the future.

A special event for me each autumn is the lunch in the City for the launch of the Annual Foundation Appeal. At this, a former Reed’s Foundationer returns to give the keynote address and for 2015/16 and 2016/17 our guests were inspired by Luke Wheeler (Capel 2016) and Shahin Baghaei (Capel 2002), each of whom spoke powerfully and emotionally about the challenges they faced before and during their Reed’s education, what Reed’s had done for them and how Reed’s continues to mean so much to them. Listening to those addresses gave the audience a compelling reason to support the Foundation, something that many ORs do willingly and generously through the years. But, the OR community can still do more! Whether you start to contribute for the first time, or perhaps increase your current contributions, your donations will make a huge difference to children’s lives and your generosity will be immensely appreciated (and tax relief makes it even more worthwhile!).

I reported the launch of the OR Golf Society in the 2016 Reeder, with our inaugural event in Autumn 2015. We hosted three more events in 2016, another in April 2017, with the next one scheduled for 12th October 2017. You will find photographs and a list of attendees later in this publication but, in summary, this is what we have been up to:

My thanks to each of the hosts and, especially, to all those who have joined us and provided some interesting golf and excellent company. I must emphasise that these days are open to all golfers – that’s the beauty of golf and its handicap system, with several 20+ handicaps on show. We get a more enthusiastic response when we visit better courses, with players happy to pay a bit extra for the experience, with one attempt to arrange a more “budget” day not attracting the necessary support. I would like to see numbers increasing each year, and more ORs happy to host an event at their own clubs, so please get in contact

I’m delighted to report that the wedding was a great success and Nick and Ruth are now happily living in Hitchin, about half an hour away from our family home in Harpenden. I (just) made it to the 2017 Reunion Day before flying out to Dallas for another family wedding and I’m glad to report that I’m running out of unmarried relatives who could create potential conflicts for future OR Reunion Days (although Sharmaine may have her own family story to tell next year!!)!

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow OR Committee members (see page 82), many of whom

were at Reunion Day this year, who so willingly give up their time for the benefit of our community.

Just prior to publication, Matt Ridsdale tendered his resignation from the OR Committee. I would like to thank Matt for his years of wise counsel and his contribution to the wider OR community, and I hope we will still see him at OR events for many years to come.

Finally, this edition of the Reeder would not have been possible without the firm foundations built over many years by our former Editor, Geoff Martin. We owe him a debt of gratitude for around a decade of sterling service and I would like to record our sincere thanks to Geoff for that.

Equally, this edition and those of prior years would not have reached publication without the tireless efforts of Sharmaine and her colleagues at the School, with Sharmaine now taking over the leadership role as the Editor and fulfilling it with spectacular success. The Old Reedonians are truly blessed by the support and inspiration that flows out of the Development Office and, once again, I would like to record our thanks to all of them.

I hope you will enjoy reading the 2017 Reeder and I hope it inspires you to start or to increase your connections and contributions to the Reed’s community in 2018. My thanks and best wishes to you all.

#1 Promote Academic Excellence

A word from the Headmaster As the Headmaster of an institution that is steeped in 200 years of history and heritage, I am most aware that sometimes one needs to look back in order to prepare for the future. This is why I enjoy meeting with and hearing from our wide network of Old Reedonians; it is through sharing your stories, memories, anecdotes and words of wisdom, that I am able to bring to life the ‘Reed’s character’.

I know that it is this Reed’s character and ethos that makes the School so unique and one that is very much shaped by the legacy of Andrew Reed and the Foundation. It is our job today to make sure that this remains the case, not only in the past, but in the present and for years to come.

To this end, we have developed six key aims for the School which I will use as a framework to share a review of the academic year with you. As you read through, I am sure you will see that our Old Reedonians are very integral to School life and I am grateful for the wonderful support you continue to give in so many ways.

Please accept my sincere thanks again for all your support of Reed’s School and I hope you enjoy this year’s edition of the Reeder and the wealth of articles in it. I also hope it inspires you to come and visit soon.

The best teachers are those who show you where to look, but don’t tell you what to see.

I am delighted that we moved up the various league tables again this year with excellent examination results at both GCSE and A Level, but am also aware such measures do not always reflect the wider educational benefits on offer. I believe this resonates with both our current and prospective parents, as applications continue to rise.

I am also proud that we are an inclusive school that focuses on academic excellence as last year’s leavers demonstrated: 90% of the 125 pupils achieved their first or second choice university, 70% of these to Russell Group universities with four to Oxbridge and others gaining places at top US and European universities, Art Colleges and RADA. Our aim is to ensure our pupils learn how to learn and learn how to think by promoting a lifelong intellectual curiosity. This takes place right through the School: by teaching chess to all the First Form; by introducing FutureTech lessons to all Second Form; by requiring all Third Form pupils to write a dissertation for their Nissen Bridgeman project; by introducing mindfulness lessons in the Fourth Form; by developing a ‘tougher minds’ programme in the Fifth Form and by offering the extended project qualification in the Sixth Form. We believe such a dynamic approach is vital and are always looking for ways to enable our pupils to be creative and independent.

I am proud of our pupils’ efforts and their achievements. Likewise I am proud to lead a school where the skill, enthusiasm and dedication to their craft of our staff is exceptional.

Continue to build on the legacy of Andrew Reed

Find the best in every pupil

Create a community for life

All children have a unique blend of talents and interests; it is our job to unlock these attributes.

Our desire is to create a community that lasts a lifetime certainly seems evident when I meet ORs. For example, it was wonderful that at Reunion Day this year, we had ORs representing each decade with a few from 1947 who were celebrating 70 years since being at School.

Schools last two hundred years because they evolve, not because they change the fundamentals; Andrew Reed’s legacy continues to shape our ethos in so many ways.

Right up to the late 1950s, almost all the pupils at Reed’s were orphans or from single parent families and came from all over the country. It is illuminating to speak with ORs of this generation about their experiences and life achievements. Today Reed’s is mostly a day school, with our pupils mainly coming from the local area: however, between 10% and 15% of our pupils are Foundation scholars and so his legacy continues in a real way.

Importantly, the values he exemplified to us, as someone who was very much ahead of his time with respect to social mobility, the power of education and human rights, remain very much at the centre of our consciousness.

Even our wonderful new indoor cricket centre has its genesis in the Foundation.

The seed capital for that project was donated to us by a former Foundation scholar. His vision, and that of a current parent who also made a significant contribution to the project, was to provide a facility that all the pupils would benefit from and, when it is not being used by School, could be rented out to third parties and the wider community, with the funds being ploughed back into the Foundation to support pupils.

And so, ultimately, Andrew Reed’s legacy is this School and its ethos.

In Drama this year we have had four superb, large-scale productions where the numbers taking part are ever-increasing.

Similarly in Music, the autumn and spring concerts were of the usual high standard and were supplemented by other wonderful performances such as the Kraftwerk concert by the Third Form and the Steinway Hall concert.

In Sport, as in Drama and Music, our pupils have excelled. We have put out more teams in the major sports of rugby, hockey, netball and cricket than ever before and there are also numerous individual successes with representation at national and county level. Reed’s School was Surrey Champions in boys’ hockey at U13, U14, U16 and U18 – a remarkable achievement; given that we are considerably smaller school than our competitors.

Our U16s reached the Hockey National finals at the Olympic Park, our Rugby 7s team reached the National Quarter finals and our girls’ hockey team narrowly missed out losing in the semi-finals. They did, however, play at the Cambridge v Oxford varsity match where OR Naomi Kelly (Mullens 2015) captained Oxford to a 4-0 win.

The number of pupils undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh awards and taking part in Toastmasters continues to grow, the CCF continues to thrive with an impressive Corps of Drums, as does the rich and varied activities programme that we provide for all our pupils.

You will go on to read about the various School events that have involved Old Reedonians throughout the academic year.

What is so positive is that there is no sense of struggling to get volunteers for such occasions, as our ORs are always happy to give back in whatever way they can.

This sets a great example to our pupils as to how Reed’s will never really leave them!

The timeless Charity House Arts Reviews perfectly illustrates the nature of the Reed’s community within School as it continues to be organised by the pupils themselves, showcasing their talents and creativity with a real sense of purpose in raising money for their chosen House charity.

We are also lucky to have a dynamic parent body who, through the auspices of FORS (Friends of Reed’s) and ParentLink, bring us together as a community through the Christmas Fair, quiz night, comedy night and summer parties.

Provide a nurturing environment where all pupils can flourish

Prepare pupils for the future

Success is only possible if pupils feel they are in an environment where they can flourish and this is what we aspire to create.

Whether it is through our 360 degree pastoral system, the student mentoring scheme – where our trained Sixth Form students support younger pupils – or through the house system where staff and pupils unite as a team to compete against the other houses in everything from tug-of-war to badminton, it is that feeling of togetherness, community and mutual support which is so important.

If we can nurture curiosity and independence, nourish responsibility and produce compassionate young adults full of integrity, we will have succeeded in this aim.

Our final aim is to prepare our pupils for the future. In many ways everything we do at Reed’s seeks to achieve this.

This year we see our largest ever Sixth Form leaving to become our newest Old Reedonians. When I look at their university courses and destinations, they are very impressive and demonstrate that we are certainly not producing homogenous clones.

In contemplating what advice to pass onto our leavers, I was struck by the words of OR Major Mike Foster Van der Elst (Mullens 2001) of the Rifles Regiment who spoke brilliantly at our CCF Regimental Dinner in early June. Although he left in 2001, Mike remains connected with Reed’s and I thought I would relay to you some reflections from his inspiring address by way of a gentle reminder of what it means to be an Old Reedonian: “You may find yourselves for the first time now looking beyond the horizon of Reed’s, preparing to start a career or go to university, and wondering if you are ready.

You absolutely are. This School has given you everything you need to do well in anything you choose to do.

“To steal a line from Kipling, something that defines you as Reedonians is that you can ‘walk with kings but keep the common touch’ and ‘keep your heads when all about you are losing theirs’. So Reed’s has given you a personal code, although you might not have realised it yet. Whatever you decide to do in life, hold on to that, earn the great privilege you have enjoyed by being in this School by giving back to society and you will have a fulfilling career.”

In my first few days, I was welcomed not just as part of my new form, or my year but as part of the Reed’s family, my life was certainly changed for the better.

It was at this point that Reed’s demonstrated in my opinion its greatest strength, its ability to provide a sense of community and pride in its core values, among which lie a strong emphasis on compassion and respect for others, the type of qualities which has the power to change people’s lives.

BACK TO SCHOOL

ORs CONTINUE TO PLAY AN INTEGRAL PART IN SCHOOL LIFE SEPTEMBER 2016 Two OR visits from The Netherlands in one month! Florence (or Francine as she was known at School) Verbeek (Bristowe 1997) was joined by her husband and mother, whilst Lisanne Naves (Mullens 2004) popped in to say hello and even managed to find herself in the whole School photo outside the Assembly Hall.

We held our second FutureCareers Seminar at Reed’s focusing on the world of film and television and were lucky enough to be joined by three very experienced Old Reedonians, each of whom is an expert in his/her respective field.

We welcomed ORs, current and former parents, and friends from the local community to join us in a ‘Grease’ film night in aid of the Reed’s Foundation.

Rachel Corbould (Mullens 2006) spoke passionately about some of the amazing and diverse film sets she has worked on.

Rupert Bryan (Mullens 1992), owner of MPH Productions, talked knowledgeably about the making of film, television, video and internet content across a broad spectrum, and the various roles within the industry. Chris Brogden (Capel 1984)

painted a wonderful picture of the demands of being a producer: the responsibilities, the juggling, the managing, the researching, the selling, the budgeting, the coercing and last, but not least, the need to be creative, brave and come up with new ideas constantly.

On a summer night in September, Rydell High made a visit to Reed’s School...and if that means nothing to you, then you’re obviously not a Grease fan!

Under the banner of ‘Films for the Foundation’, we welcomed ORs, current

and former parents, and friends from the local community to join us in a ‘Grease’ sing-a-long. Everyone entered into the spirit of the evening with some great costumes, singing and dancing.

Huge thanks go to OR Charlotte Mocatta (Mullens 1988) for her drive and determination in getting this fundraiser off the ground. Money raised went into the Simon Church & Jonathan Turner Bursary Fund (part of the Reed’s Foundation) in memory of Charlotte’s brother and friend – see OR Syndicates, page 65 for further details.

JANUARY 2017

We were so grateful to welcome our former School Captain, Shahin Baghaei (Capel 2002) to the launch of our Annual Foundation Appeal held at Grocers’ Hall in London as our guest speaker. Shahin gave a very powerful address about the impact of the Foundation on his and others’ lives to an eminent group of city executives, charities & trusts and educators. Here he is with the Headmaster, Mark Hoskins; the Chair of Governors, Mike Wheeler; and the Annual Foundation Appeal President for 2016-17, Angela Knight CBE.

David Methold (Bristowe 1961) and brother Chris (Bristowe 1970) made a visit back to Reed’s with their wives and had a sneak preview of the Reed’s Heritage website.

Shahin Baghaei (Capel 2002) was back again but, this time, at School along with Sophie Soeting (Bristowe 2010). The two ORs, alongside a current parent, helped to make up a panel of legal experts who shared their knowledge and advice with the pupils about careers in Law. To quote one attendee: ‘It’s great to have ORs come back and speak, as you feel an immediate bond.’

Rahim Lalani (Blathwayt 1997) popped in all the way from Pakistan. Sadly, his visit was for the funeral of his father, also an Old Reedonian – Shiraz Lalani (Blathwayt 1960) (see Obituary, page 52). The picture shows Rahim standing next to the 1959 School photo in which his father appears.

NOVEMBER 2016 Every year, the School celebrates the life and work of our Founder, Rev Dr Andrew Reed with a series of special Chapel services. To help us with this, we were delighted to welcome back ORs, James Bartosik (Mullens 1998) and Georgina Sheedy-Collier (Mullens 2009), who both gave moving addresses focussing on their perspective of the Foundation.

It was great to see two of our 2016 RideLondon-Surrey cyclists join us for lunch and a look round School. The day was finished off by watching the 1st XV play St John’s. You could see both Ryan Nesbitt (Capel 1990) and Nick Yellowlees (Capel 1975) itching to get on the pitch to help out, until Mr Clapp stopped them for a selfie!

FEBRUARY 2017 Polly Lambert (Blathwayt 2009) and her fiancé, Alistair, called in to do a reccie to see if Reed’s might work as a venue for their wedding in 2018! It does!

Our newly appointed Director of Sport Ben Edwards, was delighted by the support he received from them many ORs who accompanied him on his challenge to run two miles every day for a year in support of The Royal Marsden. He completed this on New Year’s Day, raising nearly £32,000.

BACK TO SCHOOL

MARCH 2017 We were thrilled to see David & Anne Jarrett back to join us for the Andrew Reed Lecture (see Main Article, page 14) delivered by Alex Van Holk (Mullens 2002).

Her passion for the two subjects flooded through with the added bonus of her being able to inspire an infinite increase in interest of Data Science, literally. She started the lecture with ‘okay so who here wants to be a Data Scientist?’ – no show of hands, to an hour later seeing a quarter of the audience raise their hands to the same question.

Thank you to the many ORs who came back for our annual Reed’s School FutureCareers Evening, sharing their professional advice and knowledge with our current pupils and giving up their time.

Those who joined us included Ian Deans, Raj Kanwal, Marc Sage, Andrew Sage, Ismail Laher, Peter Wood, Mark Marijnen, Joe Bennett, Portia Whiffin, Jonty Oldreive and Tim Watney. APRIL 2017 Only Georgina Sheedy-Collier (Mullens 2009) could make a lecture to Sixth Form students on science and technology so gripping.

Roger Dipper (Blathwayt 2010) kindly came back to share his acting skills and expertise with some of our Fourth Form taking their Silver Arts Award. This was followed by a Q&A session with the pupils who were rightly impressed by all that Roger has achieved since leaving Reed’s.

Roger’s next ‘gig’ is appearing in ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ in Paris later in the year!

The support we received from our ORs in donating prizes for our May Ball this year was exceptional: from exclusive access to the members only Monaco Yacht Show (Nick Dean, Mullens 1976), to a luxury apartment in St Lucia (Adrian Ricks, Mullens 1972), to limited prints (Andy Glass, Mullens 1984), to a signed tennis racket (Tim Henman, Blathwayt 1991), to cricket coaching (Henry Thorpe, Mullens 2015), to tickets for Queens (Ben Haran, Mullens 1994), to exclusive use of a Lotus Exige (Jamie Matthews, Capel 1999) – we are grateful to you all.

It was a privilege to see so many of our former 1st XI Cricket Captains gathered together at Reed’s School as they joined us for a sneak preview of our new Jarrett Indoor Cricket Centre.

Although still under construction, there is no doubt that this impressive and hi-tech facility – designed and project managed by Sports Clubhouses – will not only enhance Reed’s cricket credentials but be a hub to bring the whole community together and generate revenue to support the Foundation in perpetuity. Thank you to our Captains for their enthusiasm and support.

JUNE 2017 Ann Deckers (Bristowe 2004) made a visit to Reed’s with her new baby son, Leo, all the way from Belgium.

As part of the comprehensive Higher Education Day held at Reed’s every year, we were delighted to welcome back nearly 30 of our younger ORs, the majority of whom are currently at university, with another handful pursuing exciting careers.

In a sort of speed-dating format, the group shared their experiences, tips and words of wisdom with our Lower Sixth students about their university, their course and their work. The ORs relished being grilled by the students who asked some very insightful questions, as well as enjoying a famous ‘Reed’s lunch’ and a catch up with their former teachers. It was especially pleasing to see so many Old Reedonians return for the CCF Regimental Dinner, with guest speaker, Maj Mike Foster Vander Elst (Mullens 2001) giving an inspiring address (an excerpt of which can read in the Word from the Headmaster, page 6). At Speech Day the Headmaster recorded a vote of thanks to Peter Verstage (Capel 1965) who stepped down as a Reed’s Governor, after 10 years of committed service. As well as sitting on the main Governing Board, Peter held positions on various sub-committees – notably the Finance and Marketing Committees, always adding value to the discussions and decisions made.

How could anyone leave it 52 years before coming back to visit Reed’s? That was how long it was since Bruce Anderson (Capel 1965) left School, so it was delightful to welcome him back for a walk around and reminisce. We think he left feeling that he should have done it much sooner and that, in fact, although a lot has changed on the site, there is still a lot that remains very familiar.

JULY 2017 We were very grateful to Tim Henman (Blathwayt 1991) for finding time in his busy schedule to be our guest of honour at Reed’s School Speech Day. Even lovelier was the fact that he made a bee-line to say hello to another Reed’s legend, Richard Nicholson, who managed to join us!

Tim has been a huge supporter of Reed’s over so many years and, indeed most recently, through the work of the Tim Henman Foundation, continues to support the work of the Reed’s Foundation and our Primary Forum Outreach Programme.

Resilience in the 21st Century Alex van Holk (Blathwayt 2002) delivers a moving and thought-provoking address at the 2017 Andrew Reed Lecture

T

he first of the Andrew Reed Lecture Series took place back in the 1990s; the aim was to invite eminent speakers to give an address primarily on the subject of the under-privileged, honouring the work of our Founder. Previous speakers included experts such as Lord Judd, Chief Executive of Oxfam, Professor Bhiku Parekh, a world authority on Mahatma Ghandi and Mrs Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, a concentration camp survivor and gifted musician.

Rolling forward 25 years... we felt the time was right to reinstate this annual Lecture Series, with a slightly modern update. Given the uncertainty of our times, Andrew Reed’s ethos and vision – in so many areas of social reform – are more relevant now than ever.

So we wanted to broaden the series’ remit to reflect all the qualities that Rev. Dr Reed stood for, elements that now form the bedrock of the School’s six values: integrity, compassion, curiosity, responsibility, resilience and independence.

For us, to have an Old Reedonian ‘kick-start’ the new series was important and so, when we were looking for a speaker to talk about resilience in particular, we knew instinctively that within our ‘own ranks’, we had an Old Reedonian who very clearly exemplified this quality. We were delighted when Alex said yes!

Anyone who was at School at the same time as Alex would remember him for all sorts of positive reasons but, for a new generation of pupils, parents, staff, governors and invited guests, it was always going to be a poignant evening hearing his story and how it shaped him and those around him.

As an exceptional sportsman and academic, Alex always pushed the boundaries when at School, whether that was on the hockey pitch or in an Economics lesson! His philosophy was to live life to the fullest. So, aged 17, when he was invited to holiday with a former classmate at Reed’s in France over Christmas in 2000, he jumped at the chance.

Being driven by one of his friends, Alex described the moment he saw their car rapidly approaching a huge lorry before swerving off the road to avoid a collision. The next thing he remembered was lying in the verge on top of a tree and feeling nothing from his waist down. Alex was paralysed.

After several weeks in hospital, he was bored.

He wanted to get back to some normality and, despite going against all his doctors’ orders, he returned to school after just two months. In his speech, Alex paid tribute to the then Chair of Governors; the Headmaster, David Jarrett (who was in the audience); the staff and, of course,

I was truly moved by Alex; what an amazing story of resilience and determination against such trauma and devastation. I know my son, who has had to face adversity in his life, would be inspired to see that you don’t give up but keep going and see what you can achieve.

his friends, saying that returning to Reed’s after his rehabilitation and being given all the outstanding support academically, practically, pastorally and emotionally was a pivotal moment: it was then that he realised he could get on with the rest of his life: get his A Levels, go to university and fulfil his ambition of a career in banking.

However, as if this weren’t test enough for Alex and his family, in a tragic set of circumstances, just a few months later, his younger brother Bram, also a Reedonian, was killed by a car when crossing a road on a family holiday.

At this point in the evening, all eyes fell on Alex’s parents – Elske and Bart – who, along with his youngest sister, had so bravely come along to support their son. One’s immediate reaction was to try to understand how one copes with and come through such devastating and life-shattering events?

In trying to answer this, Alex put it down to a ‘sense of community’. A community of family, a community of school, a community of friends – each a group with shared grief, shared values, shared qualities and a shared sense of purpose that helped him get through. Of course, without the strength of his family and the resilience that came from them, as well as from his own character, he would have been nowhere.

And so for Alex life goes on… and he is still living it to the full. Already a success by any standard as

a Vice President of Morgan Stanley and happily married to Luise in 2012, after being inspired by the London Paralympic rowing, he decided he wanted to take up sport again! With no previous rowing experience, he juggled a demanding job with an unrelenting training schedule, and at the 2015 World Championships, through sheer determination, Alex qualified to row for The Netherlands at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. After narrowly missing out on the A final, he came first in the B final. Quite outstanding!

So what did the audience learn that night from such an honest and moving address? Well, Alex concluded his speech by reflecting on how the School’s values continue to play a key part in his life.

He has learnt through his own circumstances the importance: of compassion, both giving and – just as importantly – receiving; taking full responsibility for your deeds and actions whatever the outcome; demonstrating integrity to lead a positive life and, of course, showing resilience regarding what life throws at you – a quality he has in abundance.

As Shahin Baghaei, our 2002 School Captain and great friend of Alex, said in his vote of thanks at the end of the evening, Andrew Reed would have been more than honoured that such an inspirational man as Alex delivered a Lecture in his name about resilience, a key trait that both gentlemen share.

To end on a quote from Alex would seem appropriate: ‘Live up to the values of the School, use them to embrace life and enjoy the ride!’

Your courage and the strength of your family during that period was not only an inspiration to me personally but touched the lives of every single pupil, teacher and parent across the School. Catch up on news from ORs and former staff Hugh Addy (Capel 1950) After leaving Reed’s in 1950, I joined the Royal Air Force as an apprentice. However, I suffered an accident and spent two years in hospital. After a series of work adventures, I became a Post Office telephone engineer. I gained a teaching certificate and subsequently worked in training at Bletchley Park. I eventually retired early and worked full-time on my farm in West Sussex, running a successful driving school at the same time. As a pasttime, I belong to the amateur dramatic society and sing in a church choir.

Ambassador Tom Aguiyi-Ironsi

(Capel 1972)

I am now into year ten of retirement after 30 years in the Nigerian diplomatic service and a short spell as Defence Minister. I am currently recovering from some medical challenges but hope to continue my hobby of travelling soon: Vietnam and Rwanda are on the horizon.

Most of my OR contemporaries are probably now retired and grandparents: my beautiful granddaughter Isabelle was born last year in the USA. As one of the first black students, if not the first, to attend Reed’s School, I am happy to say that my over-riding experience was what someone once stated: “it is not the colour of a person that matters but the content of their character.” Furthermore, the school hymn “Lead us, Heavenly Father, Lead us” has guided me through many tempestuous seas.

After a blinding 75 minutes, the score line was too close to call. I proceeded into a tackle. On the way down, I hit my head on an opposition player’s knee; no one to blame, but I was knocked out for just a few seconds. Standing strong, I managed to finish the game.

It started to go south shortly thereafter.

Outside the changing rooms with none other than Tony Talbot at my side, I passed out and was rushed to St George’s Hospital, Tooting. Here I underwent major brain surgery having a large portion of my skull removed to ease pressure on the swelling on my brain.

Alexander Arcay (Capel 2011) I am currently studying Marketing and Management at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. I have also been trading indices on the stock market and growing my portfolio for the past three years.

Harry Back (Bristowe 2011) Also, my ATAI Foundation is due to be relaunched next year. ATAI aims to empower youths in West Africa and develop sports especially rugby sevens among African boys and girls. Hopefully, Chinese interests will assist with a planned mini-stadium otherwise it might be the Taiwanese. Lol.

Roll back to 8th October 2016 when I was asked if I would like to play in an Exiles game for Old Reedonians Reed’s Weybridge down at Whiteley Village. As this was where my rugby journey began as a mini, I jumped at the chance. After the usual Friday night work drinks, surprisingly I woke up with a clear head and was looking forward to a competitive 80-minute match. Even though I had previously played high level for School and Surrey, I had not stepped on a pitch since the season before.

I was in an induced coma for four days, discharged on day 12, attended aftercare and therapy and after eight long weeks, I was finally signed off. The care I received from all the medical teams was outstanding both in pre- and post-op – paramedics, nurses, doctors, surgeons, trauma specialists and rehab professionals – this continues now.

badly, and run ineffectively (my training for third London marathon starts next month!).

However we, Julie and I, do enjoy holidays, returning to the same village in north east Corfu almost yearly with family, following sport around the world (cricket, rugby), far-flung islands and continents included.

We also love holidaying in the UK, staying in favoured pubs and tumbledown, once grand houses, walking – especially in ‘weather’ – eating out, museums, galleries… the list goes on.

Life is for living, enjoyment with family and friends.

Toby Baxter (Capel 1994) Having moved to Sheffield, I am currently starting a new exciting business venture that will bring me back to London. I am one of the lead clinicians and Business Director of The Specialist Ear Clinic based in Harley Street, London. My wife, Gwen, is fundamental in this venture as she is Clinical Director, being a leading expert in her field of ear infections, wax removal and tinnitus, as well as bespoke hearing protection.

This is very exciting for us and we are looking forward to bringing our skills to provide the highest quality and expertise to our patients. It will also be great to be back in the South East, although we are providing private clinics in Warwickshire and Oxfordshire areas. As a show of gratitude, I have managed to secure seven charity places for the London Marathon 2018 and am delighted that two other ORs, Lily Back (Bristowe 2014), and Alex Wilton (Bristowe 2010), have agreed to run with me alongside four other family members. Peter Bassett (Capel 1982) Having enjoyed my time at Reed’s tremendously, I left to finish my A Levels at a grammer – St Mary’s, Guildford. I am glad to say that I successfully scraped passes and secured a place at university.

However, I never went. I became a barman, then manager, then worked in a chippie then back to the pub. One of my customers worked in landscaping and offered me a job which has been my working life ever since. I went to Sparsholt College, Winchester, to study horticulture and business management in my ‘spare time’.

I am shortly to celebrate 30 years at landscape contractors Goddards Ltd; we specialise in turn-key commercial and private residential work, some of which are within well-known gated communities around Reed’s, but also landscape around schools, sports centres and country parks. We also undertake design & build schemes up to £0.5m. I have recently been promoted to Managing Director and will be investing in the company whilst overseeing its expansion – so if you have a need… contact me!

I am very happily married with two grown-up lads, one of whom has left home … and another who has yet to – sound familiar anyone? Perversely, as I’ve got older and my career has advanced I appear to have less and less time to do the things I really love to do so I play golf,

My wife and I managed to make the Reunion Day last year and we met up with quite a few of my contemporaries and near contemporaries which was very enjoyable.

We are hoping we’ll be able to make it again next year all being well. Hope to see some of you then!

Colin Bird (Mullens 1958) I have now lived in Canada longer than I lived in England! We moved to Canada as a family of five in January 1977. Dorothy and I are still married, with three children.

Both our boys married over here many years ago and we now have six grandchildren: five boys and one girl.

I changed occupation several times until I became a building inspector, and that occupation was the most rewarding!

Having left in 1948, I am one of the few ORs who attended what was the London Orphan School in Watford, and then went to Totnes during the War and returned to the current Cobham site. I am delighted to say that I still manage to make it to Reunion Day every year and it is very pleasing to witness the improvements that have been made to the School and its educational facilities (oh, how I wish that it had been like that in my time!).

I retired from teaching at a University of Technology in north-east Thailand in October 2015. Then I moved to Bangkok to live with my wife and her family. My wife, a university lecturer in Bangkok, retired at the same time as I did. Unfortunately, I had a few health problems on retirement (prostate cancer and venous thrombosis i.e. blood-clotting). However, I fully recovered within a year only to find I wasn’t at all prepared for retirement. Luckily, I was able to continue with my proof-reading work from my university job which is tedious but keeps me busy and, most importantly, pays a few bills.

Alex Billman (Blathwayt 2005) New job, new country, new city. After seven years in various marketing roles at the mobile operator, O2, I’ve decided I need a bit of a change. In August 2017, I will be relocating to Stockholm, Sweden, and will be working in the video games industry for EA Games. Hopefully as much fun as it sounds!

Richard Borley (Capel 1951) I left School in 1951 and joined the RAF as an apprentice, with a posting out in Singapore. My job was to build aircraft, but I also gained an ACIS qualification and went to work in a number of industries.

I married Eleonore in 1957 and we have one daughter, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. We live quietly in Cheddar, Somerset, making annual visits to Hong Kong where I worked for KPMG for 15 years.

Noel Brown (Capel 1977)

I have recently started up a private English class at home on Saturday afternoons which is going well. My wife helps me with the teaching. Currently we have five young children attending, aged 6-9 years, all at different levels, including my stepgrandson who already speaks excellent English and acts as a useful catalyst.

Now living in Bordeaux in South West France, we own and run a ‘Chambre d’Hôte’ and small restaurant. My wife and I have three children and one granddaughter.

Andrew Cassels (Blathwayt 1968) I am now retired as Director of Strategy for the World Health Organisation and living temporarily in Kathmandu, Nepal, and working on global health governance issues in countries in Asia and globally with the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva.

George Cavill (Capel 1963) Earlier this year I was invited to stay with Tony Rerrie (Mullens 1962) in Jamaica. I flew out in February from a cold and wet England to a warm and sunny Jamaica.

Tony has built up a chain of restaurants in Jamaica and Belize all called ‘Scotchies’ named after the Jamaican spice, Scotch Bonnet. After a few days in Jamaica we travelled to Belize to visit ‘Scotchies Belize’ in Belmopan which was an amazing experience for me, as I rarely go far these days and Belize is another world.

We flew back to Jamaica after 10 days and I spent time with Tony and his wife Cyd in the mountains of Jamaica at their home in Monique. It was wonderful to see my old friend (of 60 years) and chat and laugh about our time at ‘The Shack’.

Barry Cawston (Capel 1984) Barry – who very kindly helped us to curate our Bicentenary Art collection back in 2013 – has been working on an exciting project in conjunction with Banksy’s showstopping Dismaland theme park that pulled 50 artists together to focus on the biggest issues of our time: climate change, the refugee crisis, media control, social inequality, and more. Barry documented life both inside and outside of Dismaland’s gates, putting this fascinating collection together in a book entitled ‘Are We There Yet?’.

Sunny Chan (Blathwayt 2012) I have just graduated from University of Bath with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering with Advance Design and Innovation this summer and am currently running a start-up aiming to promote the idea of up-cycling wood pallets in Hong Kong, called ReclaimiNation (RN); it can easily be found on Facebook.

Shamael Chaudhry (Bristowe 2014)

We stayed with Tony’s friend Richard who has farms in the country including one of 27,000 acres and one of 5,000 acres.

The farms produce cattle, oranges and coconut products; the trip was like a step back in time. Richard and Tony have had a tough time in both Jamaica and Belize. Tony and Richard took me on the grand tour and we visited the coast in the south and the mountains right across the country.

I have played number one for Davidson College since freshman year and have been the first player since 1998 to win three Conference 1st team competitions.

I have one year left and am looking forward to leading the team to the conference tournament and then playing professional tennis. Before Davidson, I was in Bristowe, won three ITF junior singles titles and four ITF junior doubles titles, having been consistently top 8 in the UK since aged 10.

Alan Clarke – former School Chaplain I am enjoying my home, County Durham, and the opportunity to travel. I will be visiting the Isle of Man, Zambia, Cyprus, Morocco and India between September 2017 and April 2018. I occasionally take services in local churches, perform magic at childrens’ Parties and cook for my partner, Michael (now 86). I have seen several Old Reedonians now at Durham University and have no doubt there will be more in years to come.

Bill Collins (Bristowe 1948) As I write this I am looking forward once more to the annual OR reunion in Totnes in Devon for those of us who were evacuated there with the School during the war years.

It just happens that in the latest edition of the RAF Association magazine there was an article on German fighter-bombers over Devon in 1943. Apparently there was a campaign of tip-and-run raids over southern England and this triggered my memory of a low-flying raider being hotly pursued and fired on by one of our fighters as it roared over Totnes. It was a complete surprise because there had been no air-raid warning and it happened while the boys were out for morning break between lessons. It was all over very quickly; there was no trauma but some confusion as to what to do. We had different accounts according to where we were and – boys being boys – some of the stories were glossed up a bit.

The other memory which came to mind was that of the boys in the Junior House, Norbury, who had to wrap their day clothes in their jacket and tie their trouser belt around it at bed time. This bundle became a “grab bag” which, in the event of a night air raid, could easily be picked up and taken into the air raid shelter. This only happened once for me when Plymouth was heavily bombed.

In spite of the above experiences, I am happy and grateful to record that I always felt safe at Reed’s in Totnes and, like many of my friends we were well aware of the effect of the war on our mothers and home towns.

Nick Darke (Blathwayt 1998) I am Head of Sales at Keith Prowse based out of Edgbaston. We are the No 1 corporate hospitality agency in the UK and part of the giant catering group, Compass UK. We are the official hospitality partners at: Twickenham, Wimbledon (obviously great links with former Reed’s pupils), Queen’s Championships, Kia Oval, Edgbaston, Epsom Derby, Cheltenham Gold Cup and many more events. Davorin Dizdarevic (Blathwayt 1998) I was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, back in 1979. I attended schools in Sarajevo and Paris, before arriving at Reed’s where I was for two years, 1996 to 1998.

As soon as I returned to Sarajevo from Reed’s I started working. From a bar manager, to account manager at Hyundai, Renault, Nissan and Oracle. I then moved into marketing with agencies 2AM-draft FCB and at SSP. In 2010, I founded Kontakt Media Sarajevo (a video production company) and am now General Manager.

I am married with no children and recently moved to Germany at the beginning of 2016. I still manage and co-ordinate the business in Sarajevo, with the intention of moving the business to Germany.

Jez Isaacs (Bristowe 1973), a teammate at ORs rugby, turned up to the exhibition with his wife Amanda – a couple we had not seen for about 30 years.

We now spend the winter in Southern Spain but would love to see old friends who are travelling to Dorset in the summer months.

Sam Donnelly (Blathwayt 2000) Leon Dore (Head of Art, 1970) I have just returned from exhibiting my paintings, done over the last 50 years, at Denbies Vineyard Gallery. At the private view we managed to raise over £1,100 for the charity CRY, which researches the reasons that young, fit and often sporty adults die from cardiac arrest – 12 every week! The charity also goes to clubs to

I am engaged to Anna Partridge; and we will be getting married in Kent on 7th October 2017. It will be an all Reed’s usher line-up from the class of 2000: Jules Doyle, Steve Merry, Tim Parminter, Andrew Hendley and my best man is Geoff Wilkinson.

Robert Dunn (Blathwayt 1974) Having been a short-distance mountain biker for the last 25 years, I bought my first road bike in January and started training.

In March, I rode 400 miles in 4.25 days with my daughter on the Carlisle to John O’Groats leg of her Land’s End to John O’Groats ride for which she raised over £7,000 for The Royal Brompton Hospital.

I signed up to ride for the Reed’s Foundation in the Prudential RideLondon Surrey 100 which took place on 30th July, and it proved to be an amazing day! I left the house at 4am, drove to London Bridge, cycled seven miles to The Olympic Park, hung around getting cold, cycled 100 miles out of London, around Surrey and back to The Mall with about 25,000 other people (the most I had ever cycled with before was two others!). Then I cycled four miles back to London Bridge and drove back home stopping for supper en route with my three daughters.

I raised over £1,200 for the Foundation; thanks to all those who donated and who came out to cheer me on, it really helped.

Andrew Harman (Bristowe 1996) I have recently been promoted to Associate Professor at the University of Sydney. I run a research group investigating sexual transmission of HIV and supervise 3 PhD students. I have two children, ages five and four, and my wife is due to have another baby in November 2017.

Nikki Hamblin (née Bryson, Bristowe 2005) I’m pleased to announce that my husband, Olly, and I welcomed a beautiful baby boy into our family on the 7th May earlier this year. Everyone is doing very well and we’re looking forward to our first holiday together this summer.

Alan Fisher (Capel 1971) After a career ranging from an A/C designer in Australia to a training manager for an American multi-national air conditioning company to 14 years owning a Surrey Village Shop to owning an outside catering business..... I wanted a change!

Late in 2016 my brother Peter and I published a book of our mother’s life story, ‘A Fight for Life’. It tells of the horrors she endured during the Second World War in Germany when the Russians came to her home town, and her subsequent life.

It has been sobering for us, and a cathartic experience for her, to finally commit the events of her life to paper. To date we have distributed over 400 books and have received some wonderful comments: a man told me “I’m not emotional and I don’t read books, but I read this one and I cried”.

John Hansford (Bristowe 1969) I made a move from Surrey to Yorkshire some five years ago and recently set up Eagles in the Sky, a modern business providing a safety-aware, high-quality, flexible and quick response service in drone aerial and high-level still and video photography for the media, property, surveying and building sectors.... great fun getting all the qualifications, experience and building up a portfolio! I now have a good number of commercial customers ‘up norf’, as well as flying in my old

My mother has always been very grateful for the help she received from Reed’s in raising her two sons. Ours is just one story of how the School has such a positive impact on lives at a time when help is most needed. Long may this work continue.

Peter Hawkey (Blathwayt 1971) I completed the Prudential Ride London Surrey in 5hrs 18mins. Cycling past Oxshott and on to Esher made me think of Reed’s School days.

I raised money (£1550) for Cherry Trees, a charity near Guildford which provides care for severely disabled children. Some friends of mine, who live in Dorking, are very grateful for the help over many years with their disabled daughter. I have known their daughter since she was born, she is now 21 and it was a pleasure to help this deserving charity.

I was wondering how many other Old Reedonians were sharing the roads of London and Surrey with me that weekend.

If I had time I would have called in to Reed’s but had to keep the bike going!

Before anyone who knows me asks, I’m not on an electric bike yet! I am in regular contact with Hugh Burton (Blathwayt 1971) who lives in Chicago and is much better than me in keeping in touch with other ORs. Jez Isaacs (Bristowe 1973), a classmate of my brother Bruce, turned up on our doorstep in Cornwall for a brief visit a few weeks ago. We also have Dr Nick Hearle (Mullens 1997), son of Eric

surviving a three-year diet of chips and gravy, I headed straight for the city and a job in finance, fresh-faced and full of expectations. However, after a decade of working and playing hard, I needed a break, so I decided to take on an adventure.

Martin Hayton (Blathwayt 1973) Thanks once again to the boundless energy, enthusiasm and organisational skills of Mark Fenwick (Bristowe 1973) a small group of us from the class of 1973 enjoyed a relaxing weekend reunion in Spain, this time basking in warm autumn sunshine in the beautiful city of Seville.

Arriving by train and plane from all directions, we gathered at the Hotel Posada del Lucero, a traditional 17th Century coaching inn now transformed into a delightful boutique hotel. Our wonderful weekend included some marvellous experiences include eating in the oldest restaurant in Spain, dinner on a power boat, a special tour of Seville Cathedral, visits to the Art & Flamenco Museum and a cycling tour around the beautiful city.

These reunions started when we celebrated 40 years of leaving Reed’s; this was our 40+4 reunion and we are already looking forward to 40+5!

Andrew Hendley (Blathwayt 2000) Life can sometimes throw opportunities at you which you just have to take. Having left Reed’s, I went north to serve my time at Durham University. After just about

This came in the form of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, which started in August 2015 and took 11 months to complete. The race is a full circumnavigation of the globe made up of eight legs that involves 14 individual races between 12 identically designed 70ft yachts; it was founded by Sir Robin Knox Johnson. What is important to note is this is an amateur yacht race but with professional standards. All the crew are amateurs, except the skipper who is qualified. All crew members do a four-week intensive training programme. Despite having had no sailing experience prior to this, I was surprised to find that after my first week of training, I had shown enough aptitude to be selected as one of 36 to do the coxswains training, from a total pool of over 700 crew members. This comprised a one-week classroom based crash course in the theory of sailing, followed by a week’s practical test where we were required to skipper the boat for a period of time. The aim of the coxswains’ course is to have a member of the crew experienced enough to take command if the yacht’s professional race skipper is incapacitated.

Seems reasonable!

So, with my training completed, notice at work served and kit bags packed, it was time to set off. Despite the general buzz of excitement and a packed crowd at St Katherine’s Dock, the departure was still a reflective time for a large number of the crew about to say goodbye to friends and family for the next year. The fleet did their parade of sail out from under Tower Bridge and then motored to Southend Pier for race start. The hooter went and the boats were off. Next stop Brazil… in about a month’s time. Needless to say, that was one hell of a month; the crew took shape forgetting their old lives and living very much in the moment. The training became second nature as quickly as did the lack of sleep. There were our fair share of dramas in the first race; a broken navigation computer, a minor injury during a knock down (when the boat gets smashed onto its side), a rather more horrific injury when

a crew member was required to go up the mast but unfortunately snapped his arm and suffered a deep cut that required 18 stitches. Every one of the crew got stuck in to help but the medical team (the skipper, as surgeon; a dentist and mental health worker as nurses; a UFC fighter as the operating table, and me manning the medical boxes as photographer) were left a bit shell-shocked to say the least.

However, the most prominent reminder of the dangers we faced were when we learnt that a crew member of another boat had been killed off the coast of Portugal. It was difficult to adjust, but we got there and the crew performed admirably. We managed to get third place in the first race.

good reason. For much of the leg your nearest neighbours (other than the race fleet) are the astronauts on the International Space Station. There were waves that often reached 26m high, permanent wetness and temperatures that left you physically sick with pain. It was brutal and uncompromising. It was during this race, that again we were reminded of the dangers when we learnt of another death within the fleet; a crew member washed overboard in the Pacific. For me this was the toughest physically and the darkest mentally; you had no escape but it was here that you knew you had to dig deep to come through. Just under a month after we set out, having had the proverbial kicked out of us for nearly most of this time, we arrived in Seattle. From Seattle we headed to Panama, through the canal and then up to New York (not before getting caught by tropical storm Colin passing by off the coast of Carolina). From New York we crossed back across the Atlantic to Ireland, completing our fifth and final ocean crossing.

Following Ireland, it was a week-long blast around the top of Scotland to Den Helder in NL before a quick 36 sprint back to Southend, thereby tying the knot. On crossing the finish line, I crawled into my bunk about 02:30, near fainting with exhaustion. I just could not get the quote

It then continued like this-next stop was South Africa, where we managed first place, and then on to Western Australia through the Southern Ocean. This was our first taster of how monumental and unstoppable mother nature is and, that if you don’t respect her, she lets you know who is boss. It was big seas, bad weather but, fortunately, copious amounts of biltong to keep us happy. From there it was on to Sydney; we then did the ocean race classic (along with 140 other boats) from Sydney to Hobart. Hobart for New Year’s Eve with 140 other crews is one of the biggest, longest and heaviest NYEs I have ever had. It was short-lived though and, before we knew it, it was 2016 and we were off to the Whitsundays; from there to Da Nang in Vietnam, followed by a stop in Qingdao China. Then it was the big one: the Pacific crossing.

It was March time and we had over 6,000 miles of very north(ish) ocean to cross.

from the film ‘Blade Runner’ out of my head: “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe;” that about summarized it for me. We motored back up the Thames and, following a final parade of sail under Tower Bridge, we moored up in St Katherine’s Dock to cheering friends, family, reporters and old crew mates.

I am pleased to say that we podiumed six out of the 14 races, with a handful of fourth places, meaning we finished third overall.

Needless to say it was one of the hardest, brutal, tiring but (at times) utterly joyful, truly exciting and exhilarating years of my life. The race states more than 9,000 people have scaled Mt Everest and just over 3,000 have circumnavigated the globe; for the reason that it just doesn’t get tougher that this. It’s not often that one gets the chance to take on an adventure, I am proud to say that I have!

Simon Holden (Blathwayt 1957) I can’t believe that it is eight years since I penned a story of my life since leaving ‘The Shack’. Having visited the hallowed ground on a couple of occasions for the reunion, I have been monumentally impressed by the changes and developments which have taken place. Well, it is all there for you to see and experience with the warmest of welcomes from the Development Office.

So don’t delay; if you haven’t been for a long time, do it now! I dragged Johnny Causer along this year as he had never been back since leaving in 1957 and, much to his surprise, he met his cousin who was a pupil at Dogmersfield.

I am still living in Zambia luxuriating in the kindest of seasonal weather. July must be probably the best time as the rains finished in April and now the nights are cold and fresh and the days are simply idyllic.

Since my last article, Wendy’s and my business has thrived but taken a downward turn in the last two years. At our peak we were employing 69 staff and had a total of nine operational drill rigs. This kept us exceedingly busy and, four years ago we co-opted our elder son to assist with the management of the business.

Since he is a Cambridge degree qualified engineer and also a chartered accountant he is the most useful addition to our management.

Currently there is a lull in the copper mining industry due to the fall in the price and various worldwide trends reducing investment and development, particularly with the Chinese element, so we are between contracts at present with our drill rigs in a care-and-maintenance mode.

Wendy is setting up home in Congleton, Cheshire where we have bought a flat overlooking the very pleasant market town, located in a bend of the River Dane and adjacent to the beautifully manicured town park between a high hill and the river with a very pleasing restaurant and bar. The younger members of the family and friends are busy producing the next generation and we have the most delightful granddaughter and two very new boys of other relatives. Wendy is glorying in the new arrivals and all the involvement new families can provide.

Mike Holgate (Mullens 2000) I completed Intermediate Command and Staff College in 2015, followed by a two-year secondment to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus as the Operations Officer and lead for landmine clearance.

I recently returned to the UK to take command of a squadron in the north of England, in preparation for further UK contributions to United Nations peacekeeping operations in Africa. When free time permits, I enjoy getting out into the mountains or under the sea, but spend most of the time returning to the South West to be with the family and two very energetic children.

Our younger son now has a new partner with a wedding very much in the planning at Christmas. In addition to his two boys, his partner has the most engaging and delightful pair of girls and there is never a quiet, peaceful moment in the house save during sleep time!

So it looks as if retirement is on the cards but I am going to have difficulty leaving here, having been overseas since 1975 working in seven countries and having been in Zambia for 22 years. Being “put

John Holt (Bristowe 1975) I turned 60 in November last year and am doing well. I still enjoy my involvement in the OR Third Sector Group and numerous coffee dates with friends. We went to Paris (the week after the terrorist attacks) to celebrate my birthday with family Elle, Pete, Dan and Gail.

My son Daniel got married to his beautiful girlfriend Gail in September 2016 at Bookham Baptist, and now have a flat in Leatherhead. Dan graduated in Physics this year and has started a PhD involving building nanostructures for solar energy at the University of Sussex!

We are still very involved in Esher Green Baptist Church and still lead a small group (was weekly, now fortnightly). We are both greatly enjoying volunteering at Cobham Foodbank on a regular basis.

Giles House (Capel 2000) I live in California where last year I married my wife Tanya. This year we welcomed a new addition to the family, Sterling James House. Now nearly six months old he’s keeping us all nice and busy! I am the Chief Product Officer for top cloud company CallidusCloud, where I’m responsible for the company’s product strategy and engineering. When I’m not working or looking after Sterling, I’m on my bike cycling up a mountain somewhere.

John Hughes-Wilson (Mullens 1962) As some of you will know, I had a 31-year career in the British Army rising from a trooper in the Royal Scots Greys to an officer in the Intelligence Corps, ending as a full colonel on British and NATO intelligence staffs.

Since retiring I have carved a new career as an author of over 15 books and a commentator on security and defence matters: ‘Military Intelligence Blunders’ has become a best seller and was even found alongside Osama bin Laden’s bed!

Back in June I donated a unique collection of military, intelligence, security and defence books, journals and documents to the English School Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus to open a new Security Studies Archive for the ESK Library.

Mike Jaggard (Mullens 1970) I met with Dave Mcelhiney (Mullens 1969) in February this year. We had a great time playing golf, and then relaxing afterwards with plenty of laughs around the table and lots of wine consumed!

Richard Jefferies (Blathwayt 1975) 300 words to cover 42 years…here goes.

Travel, and lots of it, summarises my life since Reed’s, and a very low threshold to boredom.

I graduated in Geology from Kingston Poly and started work as a Wellsite Geologist on oil rigs around the world. The North Slope of Alaska in December is not recommended! However, Puerto Limon in Costa Rica is a must. I moved to Calgary, Canada in 1980, working mostly in the Rocky Mountains. Work on the exploration wells offshore east coast Canada allowed me to live in Toronto 1982-1986, where I

got married in 1983, and where my daughter Victoria was born in 1985. I moved back to Calgary with family in 1986, worked for PetroCanada for four years, and ran my own consulting business.

I then divorced, and moved back to Guildford area in 1996 working for Landmark, the technology division of Halliburton Company (one of the world’s largest oilfield services company) for nine years, ending up running their software business for NW Europe. I moved to EDS, a small French software company focussing on 3D modelling of subsurface hydrocarbon reservoirs, running EMEA and CIS, until the company was sold to Paradigm Geophysical in 2007, a large Houston-based oil and gas exploration software company. With Paradigm, I was EVP Eastern Hemisphere based in Woking.

Again, we successfully sold the company on to Apax Partners, a large London based private equity firm in 2012. I left the industry in 2014, and am now living between Shamley Green in the Surrey Hills and our house in La Croix Valmer, South of France.

I married Debbie, BA cabin crew, including Concorde, who was the girl next door from my childhood, in 1997. I have two beautiful step-daughters Olivia and Hannah, and two grandchildren, Ruby and Finn who have me totally wrapped around their little fingers. Best wishes to all ORs.

Ed Jones (Former Assistant Director of Music) I am still a Housemaster and Assistant Director of Music at Christ’s Hospital and I spent much of 2016-2017 as Acting Director of Music (during which time Iain Carnegie came to adjudicate our House Singing Competition with great panache!).

I am looking forward to concentrating on running the House in 2017-2018.

Luke Jones (Bristowe 1986) I have been very involved in setting up ‘1880’, a members club that opens its doors in Singapore in October. Three years in the making, ‘1880’ is collaboration of partners including British interior designer Timothy Oulton; luxury drinks leader Proof & Company, and award-winning creative agency, TSLA. The club will offer a variety of international cuisine, a range of quality wellness treatments, a screening room, an innovative co-working space, a high energy cocktail bar, a yoga and pilates studio, an intimate private dining room, event spaces and a spectacular outdoor terrace. As a member of 1880, guests will also be able to visit overseas clubs such as the Devonshire Club in London and the Capital Club in Dubai.

I am delighted to say that fellow OR, Fazal Mahbob (Mullens 1987) has been hugely helpful in advising and connecting us to a fascinating and eclectic group of individuals in south-east Asia and beyond.

Other ORs: Simon Hague, Derek Venn, Benn Shepherd and Attila Emam will also be regulars at ‘1880’.

From HMS to HMP…. I retired from being a Chaplain in the Royal Navy in November 2015 after 23 years of time afloat and ashore. Since then I have been working as the Church of England Chaplain at HMP Dovegate in Staffordshire, so it’s a move from working in cramped conditions at sea in a cabin to working in cramped conditions in prison cells. Whilst missing the Navy I have successfully made this move ‘ashore’ and am enjoying my new area of ministry. I hope not to see any ORs as one of my new parishioners!

Regrettably, there is little good news from me. Margaret, my wife of 43 years, who had had a lengthy history of heart disease (cardiomyopathy) suffered a major brain haemorrhage and, despite lengthy and complex neurosurgery, died peacefully in June. Following all the turmoil, I am back at work (superannuation fund accounting and administration), and trying to get used to bachelor life once again; not easy for a 65-year-old after such a long partnership.

Norma Kiehne (former Matron 1960 to 1995) Apart from a few creaks here and there I am doing quite well and living in Australia.

I still remember my time Reed’s very well.

In 1960 when Mr Drayson offered me the job and added that he would expect me to stay for at least two years, I had to take a very deep breath before I said okay. I was very home sick and a long way from home.

The people I met were so kind to me and I was intrigued by the idea of working there.

It was spring time and the grounds were beautiful. It turned out to be a very interesting venture and during 35 years I was never bored. I enjoyed working with the boys and learning how to manage them was quite a task. They certainly kept me on my toes.

I did not know what a 1st XV was let alone who was in it. Poor Philip Scott, who was in charge of the team, was literally tearing out his hair in despair when I had half his team on the off-games list. However, I did eventually ‘get the message’ and the fun being had by those trying to pull the wool over my eyes came to an end!

I am delighted to say that my company, SIAN Wholesale, was recently a finalist in the top 50 fastest growing businesses in Surrey. Having increased our turnover 67% in three years, coming in 24th fastest out of 90 thousand businesses in Surrey. SIAN wholesale currently distributes exclusive brands into major high street retailers.

On the lighter side, our daughter and son-in-law have adopted a (now threeyear-old) girl from Taiwan, who is absolutely delightful (I would say that, wouldn’t I), and has been the source of much needed light relief and enjoyment during this rather sombre time. They have also been approved for adoption of a second baby who should arrive here in about 12-15 months time.

Also, I met up with Mike Jaggard (retired) in July for lunch and “refreshments” at The Oaks at Neutral Bay (one of the infamous local haunts!). Always good to see him.”

Felicity Lawrence (Bristowe 2007) I got engaged to Andrew Verona in Brussels on 27th May this year.

Brian Miles (Blathwayt 1952) When we attended the most enjoyable reunion in June, we were encouraged to provide a contribution for the next ‘Reeder’.

So here goes but first, I want to thank the Headmaster and all his team for making everyone feel so welcome last weekend, with special thanks to Sharmaine for all her efforts on behalf of Old Reedonians.

Now to sum up very briefly my life in past years. I served in the P&O for 10 years, leaving in 1964 to join the RNLI as an Inspector of Lifeboats, first in Scotland and then in Ireland. I was appointed to Head Office in 1973 and following various staff appointments, I became the Director for 11 years before retiring in 1998. I could write a book about the RNLI but space being limited, I will just say it was an unforgettable privilege to be part of such a wonderful organisation especially the opportunity to meet truly dedicated and inspiring people throughout UK and Ireland.

Following retirement, I served for seven years as Chairman of the Poole Arts Trust overseeing a massive redevelopment of Poole Arts Centre, then the largest arts centre outside London. I also became a trustee of the Fishermen’s Mission finally serving as Chairman for four years. More locally I served as Chairman for over 20 years of the Friends of Dolphin, a local charity which operates a specially designed boat taking over 2000 disabled people every year for trips in Poole Harbour.

Let me conclude by paying tribute to my wife Anne and our family of one son and two daughters. I met Anne when I was serving as a Second Officer on the passenger ship ‘Strathmore’ undertaking a cruise in 1962, such happy memories.

Finally I want to express renewed and heartfelt thanks to Reed’s School for all they did to give me a sound start in life and for teaching me values which have remained cornerstones throughout my life.

Keith Miller (Bristowe 1951) Having recently undergone two hip replacements, it is really good to be able to walk and get in and out of cars easily and without pain again.

We are living and loving life in Cobham.

Jocelyn is a solicitor in London and I look after our two girls – Sophie (eight) and Alice (six). Mum lives nearby and we do a lot together as a family. I am proud to have set up the Simon Church and Jonathan Turner Bursary Fund, in memory of my brother Simon, and his friend Jonathan, who were both ORs.

Last September Heather and I joined our group of Ramblers for a week-long walking holiday in the Dolomites in northern Italy.

Based in a hotel in La Villa in the Alta Badia region, situated at 1500 metres, we set out each day into the mountains, ascending to 2,000 to 3,000 metres with a choice of three walks of different lengths and difficulty, ranging from 6-7 miles up to 10-12 miles. We were all stunned by the quite beautiful scenery and I found I had taken 94 photographs by lunch break on the first day! It was very gratifying that, apart from occasional reminders of the

We are currently helping to support two boys at the School and will be adding a girl to our Reed’s ‘family’ in September. Last year saw our first fundraising event at the School, a ‘Sing-A-Long Grease’ night. It was a great success and we raised over £2,200. Our Film for the Foundation will be an annual event, so I hope to see many OR friends, from Simon’s era and mine, over the coming years!

Simon Moseley (Capel 1975) In September 2016, my son, Toby, and I trekked up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania (the highest mountain in Africa at 19,500 feet) to support Epilepsy Research. I had previously climbed Kili in 1994 after leaving the Army but Toby thought it would be a good idea for me to do it again! Fellow climbers looked at me strangely: why would anyone do it more than once?

The ascent is not technically difficult but very hard work and extra challenging because it starts in rainforest and ends in arctic tundra, requiring different clothes and equipment. The mountain also has no respect for age or fitness levels; a local teenage porter eventually had to have oxygen and descend to reduce the effects of altitude sickness.

A key difference to my first climb was that 20 years ago we saw no one else from entering the park gates until we reached Uhuru Peak at the summit. This time there were many more people but the whole process is well managed by the Tanzanians and the climb remains a very formidable challenge. No one is allowed on the mountain other than in an organised expedition and the mountain is surprisingly clean.

We finally summited after five days trekking; the final ascent of over 1000 feet was in darkness over very steep and rocky terrain. It was an unforgettable experience to appear at the summit with my son and to see the three glaciers around the caldera of the dormant volcano (Geography masters at Reed’s would have been proud!) and to raise a significant amount for a charity that is a very personal one for our family. We are now considering the next challenge and Simon is hoping none of his daughters wants to climb Kili!

Dan Murray (Blathwayt 1992) I am married to Madeleine and have two boisterous boys Jackson (seven) and Freddie (three) who keep us busy. I am very much enjoying working as Director of Client Development for Sedex, a not-forprofit membership organisation and the world’s largest collaborative platform for sharing responsible sourcing data on supply chains.

Bryn Nathan (Capel 1977) After spending 30 years in insurance in the City of London and serving as the National President for the charity, Moose International, an international organisation of men and women dedicated to caring for young and old, bringing communities closer together, I am now looking forward to enjoying semi-retirement in Bournemouth. Antony Pilkington (Capel 2010) Since leaving Reed’s I have finished a degree at University of Southampton, studying Geography. I went on to travel the world for a year, exploring as much as I could. I came back from my trip around the world and have worked in various jobs including manufacturing cars back in Southampton and as an activity leader for a children’s summer camp.

My future plans are to travel more and continue to find jobs that allow me to move around and explore each place I get to.

Ralph Pomphrey (Capel 1948) Andy Pickles (Mullens 1989) I have just celebrated my 12th wedding anniversary with my Danish wife, Louise, and was recently best man to my brother and OR, David. I am a freelance contractor helping senior executives to plan, build and deliver programmes of change, optimise their cost bases (and make them look good!).

David Pickles (Mullens 1990) On 15th July 2017 I tied the knot with Sarah Wooler, surrounded by a small and amazing entourage of family (including OR brother, Andy, who was best man). It was a crafty affair with a family wedding in the morning and an amazing joint birthday party at the Rookery in Streatham that

I have been stationed almost ‘next door’ to Reed’s in Ripley since 2013, but sadly I live alone as my wife, Janet, died in 2015.

My brother, Donald (Capel 1952), lives in Canada with his family. When we see each other, talk often turns to our days at Reed’s and the gratitude we owe to the Foundation.

Richard Raymont (Mullens 1949) My one visit a year back to Reed’s for OR Reunion Day confirms that although things generally may change, the School stays the same! The same immaculate grounds, the same quality of cricket, the same lasting friendships and the same genuine ‘welcome back’ from staff. Please don’t change a thing!

Toby Redman (Capel 2010) I received an unconditional offer from Birmingham City University to study for a PGCE in computer science which I am very much looking forward to.

What have I been up to? Other than spending the last six months in Cape Town, I am still in the acting and modelling world, shooting commercials and building my show reel. A few examples include Peugeot, Nissan, RADO watches, De Beers jewellery and Huawei. I also have

Benn’s son, Leo – a current Reedonian – ensured that three eras of Reed’s were represented at this unique event.

Andrew Smith (Blathwayt 1974) a few agencies around Europe so am travelling back and forth for shoots there.

I started a street food business back in 2015 through which I have explored a few avenues with and am currently deciding where I want to take it going forward; watch this space I suppose…

Marc Rhys Evans (Bristowe 1998) I have recently moved to Hersham with my wife and children. Still involved with Reed’s Weybridge RC and see the likes of Jon Don Carolis, Toby Conway-Hughes and Ben Lewis regularly.

Geoff Scales (Bristowe 1959) I joined the RAF in 1960, with the hope of becoming a pilot (as one does)! I left in 1968 at the very high rank of Corporal Tech Electronics Fitter! I married a French girl in 1968; we had a son, Stephen, born in 1970, and a daughter Catherine born in 1972.

I joined ICL as a hardware engineer in Manchester, was sent to Paris in 1970 on a job and, after an offer paying 2.75 times more than the UK salary, we moved to Paris. I went on to be recycled as a Software systems engineer with ICL but left ICL for an ICL customer as Computer Manager in 1975. A couple of changes later. Retired at 58. I divorced and remarried a previous English acquaintance.

We moved to south west France 2002, to a run-down small holding that we have totally restored. We’ve had visits from Harry Ridsdale and Jim Williams. I am still riding my Norton Dominator model 88 1956 and my Triumph T100 1969: ‘You don’t stop riding motorcycles because you are old, you get old because you stop riding!’

Having left Reed’s, I spent 31 years with Lloyds Bank. In December 2007, I was made redundant and then joined Southampton Solent University as a Credit Controller in the Accommodation Office. As of the 31st July, I semi-retired, something I have looked forward to. My wife, Diana, is also giving up work so we should have plenty of time to explore Hampshire and get in some regular walks.

We have three daughters Kate, Emma and Hannah, who has just graduated from Brunel University and started work as an Occupational Therapist. I will be 60 next year and looking to explore other countries if possible.

Paul Steward (Mullens 1982) I am still ‘batting on’ providing taxation and accountancy services to members of the public, small businesses and some professionals in a small office close to East Putney underground station. I also write wills. I am finally starting to become more useful to both God and man given that I am ‘long in the tooth’. I live close to Wimbledon Common.

CLASS NOTES

Michael Strutt (Blathwayt 1956)

My services to the public are biased towards personal taxation, which is what I am best at, although, I also advise businesses and have been successful in having problem-solving narratives to queries from accountants published in Taxation magazine. In my church I care for some people pastorally as and when they need help. After nine years of not having had a holiday I am looking forward to soon taking one and catching up with some friends.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of my first term at Reed’s at the age of seven.

I still vaguely remember my first day at The Close, wondering what to expect.

Fortunately it didn’t take too long to settle in and realise that all of us had one or both parents no longer in our lives. I didn’t particularly shine at anything, was reprimanded a few times for various misdemeanours, but managed to obtain reasonable results in GCEs being well adjusted and self-reliant.

After I left in 1956 I worked in a workshop repairing electrical items and attended college one day a week to obtain my City and Guilds. I moved into mechanical engineering and eventually received an HNC, at the same time working as a draughtsman. This led to a career supervising and managing projects on

refineries, steelworks and power stations in most corners of the UK as well as some works in Europe.

I retired ten years ago and now live in Wiltshire where I settled 30 years ago with my wife and family after living in the north and south of England at various times.

Douglas Taylor (Mullens 1970) After Reed’s, I decided to go to Newcastle University in the north and dedicate myself, full-time, to studies. Taking my cricket seriously would have been (in those days anyway) too time-consuming and I was not that brilliant to handle both sport and studies at the same time. I am glad to say that my plan worked out okay. I graduated in Spanish and Latin American Studies with a distinction in spoken Spanish (which I started to learn at Reed’s, in a class of three!). I joined Lloyds Bank International as an international trainee in 1973 and came out to Brazil. After 10 years, I was their branch manager in Manaus, in the Amazon jungle! After 13 years, I decided to leave the bank, to be able stay on in Brazil, in Belo Horizonte – MG, where I am today!

Andy Thompson (Mullens 1984) ‘I get knocked down, but I get up again, you are never gonna keep me down…’, ok, so Chumbawamba might not be my usual cup of tea but it is catchy and the lyrics resonate:

The last 10 years have had their difficulties: a motorbike crash, a failed business venture, more trauma from the rugby pitch and a huge dilemma regarding our son Jack’s education. Jack has Asperger’s and we have tried everything in mainstream schooling (from state to private) but finally we have returned to home ed. He follows a curriculum, has a number of tutor groups and, more importantly, his stress levels and

33

anxieties have decreased in the last year or so. Jack is now 14 years-old, he will probably take a number of the core GCSE subjects a year early, and he is turning into a fantastic young man. Jack was diagnosed when he was five-years-old and we were told by the consultant that Jack would never play a team game. Well, since U6s Jack has been playing for Old Northamptonians RFC and, although he is not blessed with fast motor skills (much like his dad!), he will prop against anyone.

A highlight of Jack’s rugby was when I organised a rugby tour to Reeds Weybridge in 2015 at U12s. It was a great weekend although I was suffering: first, because of recent knee ligament reconstruction and then by drinking the ORs bar dry (not the wisest thing to do when on crutches!).

As part of what seems a continual rehab from injury (motorbikes and rugby have taken their toll somewhat) I put myself through an annual endurance-based challenge. This year my brother Richard (another OR) and I have gone ‘loadbearing’ on the winter and summer editions of the infamous SAS ‘Fan Dance’ in the Brecon Beacons (the photo was taken 6th January 2017 at base camp, Richard on the left and me on the right. It was extremely tough going but we were rewarded by being told that our finishing times were the equivalent of an SAS test pass! I’ll take that. Yes, rehab hurts, but it’s certainly worthwhile.

During that time there have been other positives too. Despite selling our family home to pay the bills, and the stress that a failed business venture can cause, we are a closer family unit today than we were five years ago. We have also still continued to help others and in 2010 I founded a registered charity to assist those who want to play rugby but need assistance with playing fees or rehab from injury.

It’s whilst training, often alone on the hills, you can tune into your inner self and have periods of contemplation. You certainly find out what you are made of when every muscle is screaming for you to stop – and you keep moving forwards. You also take absolutely nothing for granted – it’s not what we have that counts, but who we have. Without a doubt Reed’s School played a huge part in helping to shape me.

I probably didn’t realise how beneficial it was at the time, and maybe I should have stayed into the 6th Form, but Reed’s has not only given me an inner strength and a confidence to be able to tackle whatever life throws at me, but it reinforced family values, the benefits of hard work and of helping others.

Alex Truelove (Blathwayt 2013) After graduating from the University of Wolverhampton in September 2016, I started to work in an insurance brokers specialising in convicted driver insurance.

Whilst it was interesting and in many ways rewarding, it didn’t fill me with the excitement that my current job does.

I have recently become the SSI at Reed’s taking over the duties of CSgt Wright after his move to the States. The role of SSI has already taken me on some brilliant trips with the CCF, and it allows me to impart the knowledge I have gained as an Army Reservist to the cadets to ensure they get

the most out of the Cadet experience as I and so many of my peers did. I am also continuing to serve in the Army reserves with the Royal Yeomanry, and I am currently going through the first stages of the commissioning process with them.

As the academic year approaches I look forward to getting stuck in with the CCF and ensuring that the skills and experiences I took away from the CCF continue to present themselves to the current and future cadets of the Reed’s CCF.

Richard Turner (Mullens 1956) I had an interesting experience on Reunion Day this year: an Old Boy was passing and I noticed the name on his nametag as Ralph Pomphrey (Capel 1948).

The name rang a bell because it was Ralph who had joined the Merchant Navy and returned to School one day when I was probably about 13, resplendent in his uniform. That’s for me, I thought – nicelooking uniform and a life on the ocean wave and, indeed, I did go to sea via Southampton University School of Navigation. I mentioned this to Ralph and his parting comment was that he hoped that by influencing me to go to sea he did not blight my life!

On the contrary I had a great career, 46 years with P&O, some hard times but also many memorable moments, finishing my

years as Master retiring in 2002. If you are reading this Ralph – no regrets. In fact thank you for showing up in your uniform in 1952 or 1953; but for that I may have existed for a lifetime in a desk job, perish the thought!

David Varley (Blathwayt 1969) I continue to be summonsed by fellow OR, Peter Verstage, to his now almost famous, ‘This Friday’s Lunch’ which he directs with an iron fist and rule book approaching two volumes and reprinted annually.

I remain a committeeman for the local joint Branch of RINA and IMarEST and attend the IMarEST posh dinner when March comes round. This is usually be tied in with seeing brother Simon’s widow for the few days I am in London. Apart from that I am fully retired as the paucity of potential employers unbalanced enough to offer me employment remains since redundancy struck in 2011. My collection around electrically reset gravity-arm escapement timepieces fills any gaps in my unbusy schedule – it also serves to test the boredom threshold of my visitors!

Peter Verstage (Capel 1965) I’ve been living in the Isle of Man since I sold my business in 2000. Amongst other things I run a Friday lunch group where I meet David Varley (Blathwayt 1969) pretty much every week when I’m on the island.

He tells me it’s my turn to submit an entry to The Reeder this year! I’ve been a Reed’s governor for the last few years, but now that I’ve turned 70 I’ve decided to move on. Not a good thing to have a board full of 70-year-olds!

Recently I met up at The Bear in Oxshott with Dave Pafford, Tony Turnbull, John Hill, Geoff Levy, Ian Chate and Chris Hawkins where we reminisced about our time at Reed’s. I’m also a friend on Facebook with Richard Gaunt who now lives in the West Country. And I met up with Tim Pool on ORs’ day when I was accompanied by my sister who was a pupil at Dogmersfield in the 1950s up to its closure. I’m keeping busy with my kitesurfing where I’m still able to see off a lot of the younger practitioners. I go several times a year to Dakhla in Western Sahara, and to Brazil and Barbados. I’m also an avid umbraphile, chasing the eclipses wherever they happen. By the time this goes to press I will hopefully have met up with Benn Shepherd in Madras, Oregon, where we are hoping for clear skies for two minutes two seconds of totality starting at 10.19am on 21st August! I would love to hear from anyone passing through the Isle of Man. Why not consider coming out for the TT next year?

Mike Voller (Capel 2005) I’m pleased to say I am getting married on 23rd September to Charlotte Pearce – we’re both very excited and looking forward to hearing Jamie Feaver give the best man speech! Lots of other old Reedonian ushers too, including Henry Mitchell, Ben Clarfelt, Jake Jackson, Michael Wakefield and Alex Davies.

Henrietta Weedon (Bristowe 2014) Fellow ORs Matthew and Nicholas Beven and I are undertaking a two-week-long cycle trip across Europe; starting at the Greenwich Pavilion in London and concluding at the centre of Budapest, Hungary. This expedition will be taking place from mid-August; we are hoping to raise money for charity in the process.

Wish us luck – we will certainly need it!

Matthew Whittle (Capel 2001) Career wise I still work as a primary school teacher and love managing PE and sport across my school. I also (somehow!) find time to play and coach tennis at Wellington College. 2017 has been a very happy and successful year in that I completed the London Marathon in April and got engaged to a fellow teacher in June. Charlotte and I are looking forward to getting married in April 2018.

Andy Wotton (Mullens 1975) The ‘London Beer and Curry Club’: over the past few years a group of us has met up in London for beers, curry and a general chat, and these get-togethers show no sign of abating any time soon!

It began with Chris Wilson (Mullens) and Nic Yellowlees (Capel) and me, but, over the years, we have been joined

by Carl Bjorkstrand (Capel), Nick Dean (Mullens), Ian Deans (Capel), Richard Jefferies (Blathwayt), Richard ‘Glasses’ Johnson (Mullens), Simon Moseley (Capel) and Roger Northwood (Capel).

Two new recruits, who have yet to make their bow, are John Burnett (Bristowe) and Nick Blacoe (Mullens) but, hopefully, they will join us soon. We also have one overseas member, Martin Anastasi (Mullens) but, since he lives in Cyprus, his attendance is likely to be limited! We never all manage to get together

at the same time (too impossible owing to busy diaries), but that doesn’t seem to matter and the banter is usually pretty much the same! We meet at the Old Bank of England pub on Fleet Street and then head to a curry restaurant down a side alley nearby. If anyone would care to join us let me know, you’ll be more than welcome!

Jamie Woodward (Blathwayt 2005) I am delighted to report that Rex Woodward was born on 16th July weighing a healthy 9lbs 3oz and mum and baby are doing really well.

Luke O’Donoghue (Blathwayt 1997) Many congratulations to Luke and Jenn Wallace who tied the knot’ in August 2016, ably witnessed and celebrated by a few other ORs: Jorrit Schrauwers (Capel 1997), David Bell (Mullens 1997), Nigel Mitchell (Mullens 1997) and Nick Hearle (Mullens 1997).

Emma Beamish (Blathwayt 2001) On the windiest, coldest and wettest (in other words a typical Irish summer) day in August 2016 – the 20th to be precise, I became a Mrs and Barry was officially stuck with me forever. After five years together, having lived in three countries, we were finally in one place long enough to get married in the beautiful church of Rathmichael in Dublin.

I am currently teaching English, coaching sports, editing the yearbook and generally getting involved in most things going on at The High School in Rathgar, Dublin.

Tasha Banks (Bristowe 2006) and Tom Woolston (Bristowe 2006) Many congratulations and best wishes to Tasha and Tom on their marriage back in September 2016. Jeremy Stephens (Capel 2005) On 8th October 2016, Courtney and I were married in Brighton Town Hall, followed by the reception in the quaint Barcombe Village Hall. Mark Stiles was best man, Alex Davies and Jake Jackson were ushers and Nikki Hamblin signed the register, so it was a Reed’s wedding party all round!

David Coates (Blathwayt 2001) Katie and David met in Weybridge at the end of 2012 and, having stumbled across the beautiful village of Lower Slaughter in the Cotswolds in 2013, subsequently decided to tie the knot there on 4th July 2017 at St Mary’s Church. Post wedding blues quickly subsided when the happy couple flew to the Island of Zakynthos, Greece for their honeymoon.

Annie Robertson (Mullens 2008) Many congratulations to Annie and Tim Ward who became engaged in June this year.

des Arcs, where Epke’s parents married 35 years ago, a spiritual ceremony was held in Eglise du Sacre Coeur in Cahors all on the 34th wedding anniversary of Philippe’s parents! In honour of our time at Reeds, we sang the Reed’s School Hymn.

Old Reedonian, Ann Deckers, sang ‘We were just kids when we fell in love’ from Ed Sheeran’s song ‘Perfect’ which made many shed a tear, especially us thinking back to the time we fell in love at Reed’s in 2002.

Epke Le Rutte (Mullens 2005) and Philippe Duterloo (Capel 2005) It is with great pleasure that we would like to share the news of our marriage! The two-day sunflower-themed wedding on the 18th and 19th of August in the South of France saw friends and family from all over the world. After the official marriage proceedings in the village of Laroque

Philippe is now working as an HR Manager at Shell’s HQ in The Hague, The Netherlands, and Epke is a veterinarian performing scientific research at the Department of Human Public Health of Erasmus Medical Center at Rotterdam University, where she just completed her PhD thesis on tropical infectious disease control.

Great times and old friends SEPTEMBER 2016 Recent Leavers’ Drinks It was wonderful to see so many of our 2016 Leavers join us for their first ‘official’ drink as Old Reedonians down at Reed’s Weybridge to watch the Reed’s v St George’s match.

OR Golf Society – Hartley Wintney The final 2016 OR Golf Society day took place at Hartley Wintney GC, courtesy of OR Richard Plank (Blathwayt 1977). Despite a rather wet start, the course took the rain well and the afternoon cleared up so a great game was had by all, especially our overall winner, Peter Griffin (Capel 1984).

Totnes Reunion The annual Totnes OR Reunion was another rip-roaring success.

Although a smaller group than last year, we were perfectly formed and the memories and stories were in abundance as ever, as well as the usual Reed’s bonhomie. Thank you to everyone who joined us, including wives, and to our absent friends who were definitely there in spirit. We hope to see more of you in 2018.

DECEMBER 2016 Recent Leavers Rugby XV v School 1st XV The change of date for this fixture to later in the School’s season seems to have worked well. Not only did it allow for a more even match, but it has become a bit of a pre-Christmas celebration which is well attended by ORs, parents and former parents at Reed’s Weybridge.

NOVEMBER 2016 Headmaster’s Reception in Hong Kong Every year the Headmaster invites ORs living in Hong Kong and the wider region to join him at a special reception held during the Education Expo week. We were delighted that this year Julian Doyle (Bristowe 2000), Dilal Ranasinghe (Capel 1999), Simon Hague (Capel 1986), Lucas Kiely (Bristowe 1994) and Tim Cheung (Bristowe 2010) were able to attend.

The 2016 OR Leavers had a large and still relatively strong squad (despite the devastating effects of a term at uni!). This meant, after a hard-fought game, the OR captain, Toby Dabell (Capel 2016), lifted the President’s Cup on behalf of his team.

They may be separated by around 60 years, but it’s great to see that Reed’s friendships stand the test of time. Two Christmas lunches – one with ORs from the 1940s and the other from the 2000s – took place simultaneously, both groups having met every year since leaving School! We are sure the banter was similar at both though and plans are afoot to get the two groups together to celebrate Christmas 2017!

Mini-Dutch School Reunion As Alex van Holk was our guest speaker for the Andrew Reed Lecture (see Feature article), we thought it would be good to gather a few of our former Rijnlands Lyceum ORs. MARCH 2017 OR Hockey – Stephen Shiells Competition We held our annual OR Stephen Shiells Hockey competition down on the astros with two competitively fought matches: the School 1st XI and a Staff XI playing against a great group of ORs from across several decades! The end result was that the ORs lost in both matches but by only one goal in each; the important thing was that everyone had fun.

20 Years On… 1997 Reunion We had a really lovely family Sunday in May at Reed’s as we welcomed back some of our 1997 leavers to celebrate their ‘20 Years On’, and held a christening of an OR’s son!

We took a nostalgic walk around the grounds, making a special visit to The Close (where it all started) and some of the classrooms, especially the Biology lab named after Mr Hearle!

This was all followed by a delicious cream tea and a browse of the Reed’s Heritage website (reedsschoolheritage.co.uk) where we found some hilarious pictures and mentions of the chaps. We hope to do this again soon, hopefully with a few others who sadly couldn’t make it.

A Reed’s Christening It was also wonderful to see James Davey (Bristowe 1996) with his wife and family celebrate the christening of baby George at the School, after a service conducted by Reed’s Chaplain, Rev. Andrew Winter. A very special Sunday afternoon on a beautiful spring day at Reed’s.

ORS ATTENDED OUR EVENTS THIS YEAR MAY 2017 OR Golf Society – Tyrrells Wood The Spring 2017 OR Golf Day saw 16 intrepid ORs tackling the wonderfully picturesque Tyrrells Wood course in Leatherhead, hosted by OR Andy Shiells (Bristowe 1984). The occasional sloping fairway favoured those with one leg shorter than the other, and it was no surprise that the winner had a low centre of gravity!

Well done, Dave Edwards (Blathwayt 1982), for showing us a clean pair of heels, and many thanks to Andy for inviting us to a great venue and generously donating the prizes, leaving part of the entry fees to be donated to the Foundation.

JUNE 2017 Reunion Day 2017 Thankfully it wasn’t as hot (or as wet) as the weather had been leading up to Reunion Day, making for another perfect opportunity to welcome back to Reed’s our ORs who left in a year ending with 7 plus our Totnes gents and Dogmersfield ladies. It was also wonderful to see so many families come along to picnic in the grounds and share the afternoon of games and cream teas.

The cricket was magnificent this year, and the Captains’ match reports make for some very entertaining reading.

Earl Valentine (Capel 1987) – who flew in from Cape Town for the game like a favourite distant aunt who turns up surprisingly at your wedding – is a paragliding expert, so that helped.

As is tradition, the School side batted first and rattled along at a healthy pace despite some tight bowling by the legendary Dusan Jaksic (Mullens 1985) and Grayson Stuckey (Capel 2012) who is both a member of staff and an OR, although he doesn’t look old enough to be either. Our guest, David Miller, coped splendidly behind the stumps with our pace attack which was a major surprise considering he went to Claremont Fan Court as a schoolboy.

Angus Darroch-Warren’s (Capel 1986) action had changed somewhat since his time at School: scaled down in favour of a curious, loopy number but – as he has connections in the dark world of security – let’s just say he bowled nicely and took a wicket.

Jonny Gleed (Mullens 1987) also embraced change this year with an unexpected appetite for sobriety. Certainly, his (only) contribution of passing the ball back to the bowlers from first slip had a greater accuracy this year although his usually enquiring and insightful sledging lacked a certain piquancy as a result of not being hammered. Although Mrs Gleed may not concur, back to the claret next year Jonny?

OR Cricket – Dylan Paris XI v School 2017 Leavers’ XI Match report by Simon Stokoe (Mullens 1986) With the usual Captain, Chris Gore (Mullens 1987), off to watch the Lions, the Dylan Paris OR XI had a new look when taking on the Reed’s Leavers XI on 12 (minus 5) Acre. Andy Shiells (Bristowe 1984) was also absent which wouldn’t normally matter, only he took his supporters with him, which was disappointing.

However, the team had a refreshing set of new skills … for example,

Joe Paris abandoned his inherited gift for spin bowling but instead gave us a credible demonstration of medium pace ‘seam up’. His father would have been impressed, I suspect. He’s a good looking lad and a chip off the old block, though frankly, a haircut and a shave wouldn’t go amiss.

Jamie Jamieson (Mullens 1985) bowled the longest continuous spell of five overs with a testing line and length, but the Captain must take responsibility for not realising Jamie’s Achilles heel, which is his Achilles heel! So when it ‘went’ during his fifth over, grave concerns arose regarding his capacity to open the batting.

The bowlers all did a fine job. Jaksic and Stuckey took two wickets apiece, D-W took one, assisted by a fine catch in the deep by Jamie, who followed up with a plumb lbw of his own. All of the bowlers were enthusiastically and ably supported by the fielders, other than Benn Shepherd (Blathwayt 1986), that is. To say Benn had quite a disappointing day in the field yesterday is a bit like saying Diane Abbott had ‘quite a disappointing’ election campaign. When he spilled his third sitter of the day off Mr Stuckey’s bowling, it was only being a School Governor that saved him from a ‘wedgie’. Ross Webster (Mullens 1995) showed natural leadership in the field that comes with being a former Captain of School cricket but, as he doesn’t bowl – he batted at four and got a duck – we must assume he was a heck of a fielder in his day?

The 20 overs came and went and the Reed’s XI scored an impressive but not insurmountable 158 for 6, with Burnett, Major and Wakeling doing most of the damage with the bat.

As the ORs had visibly not been shy with food since we all left Reed’s, we were encouraged to miss tea and carry straight on.

Jamieson, now effectively using one leg (and Jo Paris as his runner), joined Simon Stokoe (a prolific run scorer in previous years and the people’s Captain – Mullens 1986) at the crease.

The pitch was bordering on unplayable for batting and, despite a neat leg glance for four, Stokoe succumbed to a vicious in swinger that lesser men could not have got a bat on, brilliantly taken at mid-off by Reay.

We would also like to thank Sharmaine and her team for helping so much to get us organised, and to the lovely support we had from all the wives, partners and children who came along to watch.

As for next year, this was such a close-run thing, I suggest we stick with the same 11 but advertise for a non-playing manager?

Simon Stokoe (Captain, Dylan Paris OR XI, 2017) OR 1st XI v School 1st XI Match report from Jonathan Hedges (Blathwayt 1999) As is tradition, the OR XI batted first on Big Side and thanks to fifties from Alex Redmayne (Mullens 2012) and Michael Wakefield (Mullens 2005), the ORs took a comfortable lunch with the score at 138/2. Sadly, Michael failed to convert his fifty to a century as he was caught at cover for 97, trying to up the scoring rate in preparation for the declaration. However, a succession of quick wickets followed and the ORs looked in a precarious position at 233/8 before a 50-run partnership for the 9th wicket pushed the score to 280 from 56 overs when the innings was declared. With the bowling options a little light on the ground, early wickets would be crucial to stop the 1st XI completing a comfortable run chase.

Shepherd, Ross, Jaksic and Darroch-Warren all went cheaply, with Cookman taking two wickets, and O’Connell and Major one each. Zadjler completed a remarkable spell of two overs for 28 which included 1 wide, 5 no balls, obviously no wickets and suitable hilarity among his unsympathetic team mates. (Curiously, Zadjler received an award at the end of the match for a 6-wicket haul in a previous match this term. The mind boggles.)

With Jamieson still in (hobbling like a lame donkey and aided by an increasingly thirsty Paris) and Stuckey joining him at 7, the game seemed entirely beyond our reach. However, this pair proceeded to deliver what can only be described as one of the great partnerships in the history of the fixture with a magnificent 100 run stand. Stuckey was 33 not out at the close off 30 balls for which he should be richly applauded. Jamieson opened the innings, faced 56 balls, scored 11 fours and 3 huge sixes for 80 runs and was run out just 2 runs short of the target (how good would he be with two working legs?!). The only cricketer who could match Dylan for pure class in our era was Jamie and he proved the adage yesterday that class really is permanent with an extraordinary display of shot selection and ball striking that we were privileged to witness.

The fact it was not quite enough for that long-awaited victory mattered not, as all involved had a thoroughly enjoyable match played in great spirit. On behalf of the Dylan Paris team, I would like to thank the school and the boys very much indeed for providing us with the opportunity to play this important match and we wish all the Leavers the very best of luck in their future pursuits.

Kieran Corbett (Bristowe 2014) delivered just that: two early wickets and then Wakefield claimed the big scalp of the 1st XI Captain and leading run scorer, Nathan Tilley just before the tea, leaving the 1st XI 38/3 at the break. However, a superb partnership for the 5th wicket of over 100 runs recovered the innings and, as the final 20 overs approached, only 120 runs were required. The OR XI then made the breakthrough and cleaned up the tail with relative comfort to complete a victory by a 60 run margin with Corbett finishing with 4 wickets. Thanks to those mentioned and the rest of the winning team: Sikh Rihal (Mullens 2001), Sam Brandon (Capel 2008), Rory Woolston (Capel 2012), Lewis Bowerman (Mullens 2015), Michael Woolston (Capel 2015) and Mickey Strang (Capel 2016).

Reeds Weybridge Update For those of you who do not follow rugby too closely, then perhaps you should, because we have such a young and talented side down at Whiteley Village playing an exciting brand of rugby that makes for great Saturday afternoon entertainment, and a welcoming clubhouse as well. But you would have needed nerves of steel to stay calm during this last season of rugby.

In the previous season we had come so close to promotion and were bitterly disappointed to have missed out. We played eighteen League games, home and away, with the two top sides going up and, during the first half of this last season, we were looking the favourites to claim the top spot having had some relatively comfortable wins. However, we lost our ninth game, the last before Christmas, against a very good Old Haileyburian side.

The top three in the league were now Haileyburians, Reed’s and the Met Police. In the second half of the season we had some desperately close games against lesser fancied sides, nicking a win against Merton, and a very close game against Old Rutlishians away. But it was the next game against London Media that so nearly cost us promotion: we had stuck eighty-four points against them in the away game, but they came down to Whiteley with a completely different side and tore into us from the start. At half time we were nearly thirty points adrift and staring defeat in the face. With nothing to lose, we ran everything and Reeds fitness was crucial to the final result; seeing big Joe Moriarty, the winger, thundering down the touchline for the winning try was something that packed touchline crowd will remember.

Now for the home game against Old Haileyburians, which was also the occasion of the Past Players lunch. The Whiteley Village touchlines were packed, they had come to see their heroes win, but they didn’t… on the day our visitors were the better side and we went down by three tries to one – promotion hopes were now on a knife edge. We won narrowly against a very good Johnian side and that left us second in the league, our final game was against the Police: promotion would be decided on the result of that last game away at Imber Court.

Reeds had the better ‘points-scored’ record so the Police had to win and score four tries for a bonus point. Reeds could lose but, as long as we scored four tries, we would be promoted. We were all over the Police in the first quarter and then they scored three tries and we had just one at the change round. We just had to score three more tries; it didn’t matter how many the Police scored so long as we got the four. It was really nail-biting stuff, we collected another two tries, but it wasn’t until the last five minutes when winger Chris Stegmann received the ball out wide on the 22.

The Police cover was fanning out, they got hold of him but just couldn’t bring him down-it was try time, the fourth, and Reeds was promoted. You really couldn’t make it up, a truly ‘boys’ own’ finish to the season.

George Spinks (Blathwayt 1953) ORs at Surrey Schools Golf Society Festival, Bramley Golf Club Old Reedonians were invited to play in the festival for the first time this year versus twenty teams from Surrey schools (the likes of Hampton, Tiffin, KCS, Wimbledon) at Bramley Golf Club. The tournament format was seven players with best five cards counting for your team score handicap limit 24. The mighty Reed’s team included Jeremy Sherwood (7), Andy Macharg (9), Dave Mcelhiney (13), Andy Shiells (15), Richard Plank (20), Ed Peters (24) and Adam Jones (11). We played off the yellow tees, the consensus of the course was short, tight and a little tricky on the first four holes.

Ed was so keen to collect his prize, he was seen marching down the sixteenth fairway to collect the nearest the pin marker just to make sure! Although we didn’t win the individual prize, we gelled well as a team and won the team competition with consistent golf; Dave (35 points), Adam and Ed (34 points) Andy and Richard (31 points), Andy and Jeremy (29 points). We will be defending our title at Bramley next year.

OR Tennis Our OR Tennis team of Alex Croker (Capel 2012), Harry Burley (Blathwayt 2012) Josh Southern (Capel 2014) & Adrian Blackman started off the OR entry into the prestigious D’Abernon Cup in fine form by beating Old Etonians 3-1 in the first round match.

JULY 2017 Reed’s ORs v Exeter Uni Every year, Rhys Davies (Blathwayt 2011) organises a T20 match on Big Side between 11 of his 2011 OR contemporaries and 11 of his alma mater 2014 Exeter grads.

This year the following ORs took part with many who came down to spectate, and a great time was had by all!

Oli Doyle (Mullens 2017) August 1991 to September 2016 We were so sad to receive the news that Oli had passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. To remember him, we held a special Chapel service conducted by our Chaplain, Rev. Andrew Winter with special memories shared by Alex Balls (see OR Events and Reunions section).

Derek Pulleyn April 1950 to April 2017 Although not an Old Reedonian, we thought that many ORs would want to know that sadly Derek Pulleyn passed away in April 2017. Derek was a formidable force for many years within the Reed’s hockey coaching team, as well as being the Deputy Head at Parkside School.

During WWII Norman joined the Fleet Air Arm and served as a radio mechanic on escort carriers. He served on HMS Tracker, part of Escort Group 2, accompanying convoys across the Atlantic. In 1944 he served on HMS Chaser on Arctic Convoy JW57 to the Kola inlet near Murmansk, Russia. This trip enabled him to become a member of the Russian Convoy Club in 1998 and he joined them for the Remembrance Day march past the Cenotaph.

Norman Alvey (Blathwayt 1938) May 1922 to December 2016 Norman was born in Teddington on the 20th May 1922. His brother John (Blathwayt 1940) was born three years later.

Norman left school at 16 and went to a technical school to study for the Civil Service examination. He passed and went to work at the Ministry of Agriculture, cycling from home in Kingston to the city.

On being demobbed in 1946 he returned to the Civil Service in the Ministry of Town and Country Planning. However, in 1950 he decided to move into horticulture. At one point he was employed at Hampton Court where his job included trimming the famous maze.

A few years later Norman moved to the John Innes Institute, then in Bayfordbury, near Hertford, where he became a research scientist. At the same time he studied for the Institute of Statisticians examinations. While there he met and married Diane in 1956.

Their father died when Norman was seven and his mother sent him to the London Orphan School in Watford. Norman was very unhappy to begin with but, gradually settled in. In later life he was always appreciative of the sound foundation and education that he had received there and remained in touch for the rest of his life.

Whilst at school, Norman played rugby and was proud of gaining his colours, a small cap with a tassel. However, he was better at cross country, winning the school championship in 1937 and 1938 (his

In 1966 he moved with his wife and son, Ian, to Harpenden where he worked as a statistician at Rothamsted Research Station until his retirement in 1982. Then for a few years he worked part time as a statistician for the Consumer Association, or Which?, as it is better known.

Apart from work Norman had many outside interests, mainly gardening – particularly growing vegetables – and history. In 1978 he joined the Architectural and Archaeological Society of St Albans where he took on active roles in the local history section, including being chairman for four years. At the same time he was a founder member of the British Association for Local History (BALH) and was the treasurer from 1985 to 1992 and a trustee until well into the 21st Century.

Norman enjoyed writing and had articles on both WWI and WWII, including his own war memoir blog; short radio talks; booklets on Reed’s School and Charity Legislation; and articles for various history society magazines published.

In his 80s Norman joined the Harpenden Writers Group which he thoroughly enjoyed and where he made many friends.

Until a few months before his death he enjoyed entering the competitions and contributing to the read arounds.

Memories of school life and his other experiences often played a part in his writings.

Norman died in early December 2016 in Watford General Hospital as a result of a fall, when he fractured his thigh, followed by a stroke.

Ian Alvey, son of Norman Peter (‘Boris’) John Courtney August 1940 to September 2000 Peter Courtney passed away on 30th September 2000 after a short illness. Peter was born on 17th August 1940 in Henley on Thames. One of three children, his father died when he was an infant, leaving his mother to cope with a young family.

daughter, Elaine. Their second child, Patrick, was born in 1966.

Peter left the Royal Navy in 1967, joining the Foreign Broadcasting Information Service as a Telecoms Operator based at Caversham Park, Reading. Dedication and professionalism awarded him swift promotion, leading his team until illness forced an early retirement. His work with the FBIS took him regularly to the USA, Japan and Athens.

He loved Henley on Thames dearly. Often found walking beside the River with a camera at the ready, sometimes at 5am to catch the sun rise over Marsh Lock.

Peter was an active member of The Henley Photographic Club.

A great lover of the outdoors, Peter liked to walk, taking his children through the local villages of Binfield Heath, Shiplake and Harpsden all in one afternoon. Given better health, he would have followed the same paths with his three grandchildren.

Peter had a deep love for music, from Van Morrison to Classical and Jazz. Peter would listen to his vast collection of music, headphones on, oblivious to the world.

Peter was a family man, a very loving, supportive and caring man; just three days before he died, he and Jean celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

Peter was a listener, supportive to those around him and a man who would do anything for anyone he knew. He was always on hand to offer sound advice and guidance. He adored his wife Jean and was proud to have such a caring and loving family around him.

Peter attended Trinity School in Henley on Thames until 1949, before moving to Reed’s School where he was educated until 1955. Peter left school to join the Royal Navy in 1956 where he served on board HMS Fearless and HMS Afrikaans as a Radio Operator.

Peter met his wife Jean whilst stationed in Simon’s Town, South Africa. They were married in 1960 and continued to live in Cape Town until 1963 when they returned to Henley on Thames with a young

Leslie MacArthur (Blathwayt 1944) June 1928 to June 2016 My brother Leslie died in Ottawa on 30 June, a week after his 88th birthday.

Six years older than me, he was a contemporary of some of those whose obituaries were in the 2016 edition of The Reeder. It’s that time of life!

The days out with his grandchildren, talk of West Ham United, his fascination with the Grand Prix, Billy Connolly, the birthday celebrations, the bedtime stories and celebrating the new Millennium with his family, Peter lived a wonderfully rich and fulfilling life and was an inspiration to many people.

To the end of Peter’s life, he was a very proud, smart, brave and very courageous family man, so dearly loved and now so sadly missed.

Leslie left the school at Totnes in 1944, when he was 16, after School Certificate.

He started at once on an apprenticeship with Yarrows on the Clyde (Sir Harold Yarrow had sponsored him when he joined the then London Orphan Asylum in Watford) living with our father’s family in Glasgow. With a break of 27 months National Service (he was one of those whose service was extended by three months in 1948 at the time of the Berlin crisis and the Air Lift) he completed his five-year apprenticeship.

In September 1952 he married Elsie Scott, the daughter of a Lanarkshire farmer, and they lived in Glasgow. He went to sea for quite long spells as 4th, 3rd, 2nd and finally Chief Engineer over a period of about 10 years, on cargo and passenger ships, while his four children arrived and grew up in a new house in Glasgow. After a few months in a “shore job” with Lloyds, he emigrated to Canada to join the Coastguard Service. The family lived for eight years in Newfoundland before moving to Ottawa, where the children grew up and the daughters married. For some years he and his wife lived in Toronto, where he continued his responsibilities for shipping in the Great Lakes and the St

Lawrence Seaway. Finally he moved to Ottawa again, firstly with the Department of Transport and then from 1986 with the Canadian Shipowners’ Association. He retired from CSA in 1991 but remained in Ottawa until his death.

Leslie had a burgeoning family: four children, seven grandchildren and, at the time of his death, nine great grandchildren, surely with more to come. From the time he moved to Toronto, sailing was a major pastime, especially amongst the Thousand Islands on the Seaway when he moved to Ottawa. Golf was another leisure activity, which we both shared – in Ottawa, Britain and South Carolina during Ottawa winters.

In 1989 his wife Elsie died but, the following year, he married Kathleen Smith, Canadian born and bred and, after cancer also took her away he married Elizabeth Milne, who survives him. His latter wives were good Catholics both, so Leslie switched his allegiance to the Roman Catholic church, and it was in the Canadian Martyrs Church that his funeral mass was celebrated. (What would “The Old Man” have thought?!)

From the time of our 40s, Leslie and I visited back and forth with our wives, and he and I became closer friends than had been possible before. I visited him in hospital in Ottawa twice during the early summer months before cancer took final control. Bed-ridden when he and I were together, he suddenly said: “For oft when on my couch I lie/ In vacant or in pensive mood” and I recognised Wordsworth’s daffodils. Having an iPhone with me, we looked up the full poem, and this got him started, as he recalled sections of many more: ‘The Village Schoolmaster,’ ‘How Horatius Kept the Bridge,’ ‘Gray’s Elegy’ and others. He was (quite) fluent with passages of all of these and more, things that he had learned in Totnes around 75 years earlier. Remarkable that my residing happy memories of my only brother revolve around things that LOS/Reed’s drummed into him all those years ago!

John MacArthur (1942-1949), brother of Leslie John Merriman Bain December 1943 to May 2016 John, age 72, left this earth on Sunday, May 29 2016, at his home in Waimea Bay

on the North Shore of O‘ahu, Hawaii, surrounded by friends and family. He was born on December 19 1943, in Cape Town, South Africa to social worker Eileen Blythe Bain, and entrepreneur and philanthropist, Donald Bain, who made a groundbreaking study of the history of the Kalahari Bushmen for the British Empire in 1936-7. John’s great-grandfather, Andrew Geddes Bain, was South Africa’s first geologist and revolutionized transportation routes throughout the country, and his grandfather, Thomas Charles John Bain, continued the legacy by engineering 23 major mountain roads, many of which are still in use today.

John was loved by many for his quickwitted humour, generosity, vast knowledge of history and culture and eloquent command of the English language. He was a loyal friend to many. He is survived by his half-niece Judy Orpen, half-nephews Clive Bain and Peter Bain, niece Frederika Bain, and cat Tigger, but he himself lives on in the minds and hearts of the many whose lives he touched.

A memorial paddle-out and service was held on Sunday, December 16 2016, at Waimea Bay on the eve of what would have been John’s 73rd birthday and at the time of year he loved for its surf and surf culture.

Frederika Bain, niece of John Donald M Bain (Capel 1958) January 1942 – May 1990 Don joined Reed’s in 1951 aged 9, left in 1958 from the Arts VI, represented the School in athletics and 2nd XV rugby and was a lance-corporal in the ACF, attaining Certificate A Parts I and II.

After his time at Reed’s, John went on to become a graphic and fine artist, working in New York City in the 1960s before relocating to Hawaii.

John painted the story of a North Shore that is often unseen. He created a series of surfboard portraits depicting close friends, surfing icons and community activists. His work was exhibited at Café Haleiwa and can be seen throughout the community on signs, advertisements, t-shirts and bumper stickers. John created posters for concerts and happenings, including a classic image for the Grateful Dead concert in Diamond Head Crater.

He was responsible for the iconic t-shirt art for the North Shore Lifeguard Association’s Pipeline Bodysurf Contests for many years, and hand-painted the signage for well-

Roger Mew, OR contemporary Posthumous Tribute to Rodney Exton (Headmaster 1964-1977) (by Douglas Taylor, Mullens 1970) Ever since I left Reed’s (a long time ago), I have never formally recognized Rodney Exton’s sincere dedication to characterbuilding and for trying to drill into my “thick skull” the importance of thinking tactics in cricket! He was extremely modest and never told me his own story… that he had

been a very talented cricket player who had his sports career sadly interrupted, as a young adult, by polio. It is only time and curiosity that encourages us to look back and search for answers as to why someone should go to such lengths to squeeze out of me whatever talent I had for the game. True teachers seem to have a built-in desire to produce better and more complete versions of themselves.

They are certainly not in it for the money.

Much greater satisfaction seems to come out of the results they produce through their students.

In the rugby season, I suffered an impacted fracture in the left shoulder which should have put me out of the game and certainly prevented me from playing cricket in the summer. After two manipulations under general anaesthetic and physiotherapy, Rodney Exton decided I should continue exercises by practicing golf shots on the school grounds in the hockey season – and by playing with an old friend of his on a very traditional golf course. Certainly he wasn’t going to give up! Well the rest is history now.… I am sure nobody else will lose his head and score exactly 99 in an afternoon match against another school, play for Surrey Schools in Canada, nor open for England Public Schools at Lord’s (in a one-and-only match) and score a fifty! I owe a lot to Rodney Exton for taking me out of the comfort zone and showing that a lot is possible, if you persist and don’t waste whatever talent you have.

A great pity I did not say that to his face….

I am sure that many former students deeply appreciate the time dedicated by their teachers. I have singled out Rodney Exton, but all of them in my day were interesting characters and dedicated, tolerant individuals. Many students, like me, may not have had the decency to ‘create time’ to say it. If there are any close relatives of Rodney Exton ‘still around’, I should be very satisfied if you can pass this on.

Rev Douglas James Challis (Former Chaplain, 1967-1981) August 1921 to June 2017 ‘Jim’ Challis passed away on 14th June 2017 aged 95 years. He was the Chaplain at Reed’s during Rodney Exton’s headship and kept in touch by telephone from his

home at Laird in Scotland with other former masters, most recently to gather any news (gossip) of former colleagues!

His career saw him hold the following positions: Chaplain of Summer Fields School, Oxford (1958-60); Assistant Chaplain of Stowe School (1960-63); St Bees School (1963-72); Chaplain at Reed’s School, Cobham (1973-81) and latterly at Crowhurst Christian Healing Centre (2005-06).

the Queen visited in 1997, saw the tree planted by the Queen Mother and planted a tree herself. On both occasions, Mrs Shirin Lalani, once as Shiraz’s mother and once as Rahim’s grandmother, participated in the ceremonies at the School.

Shiraz N. Lalani (Blathwayt 1959) September 1943 to January 2017 Shiraz passed away on 2nd January 2017 in Hampstead, London, surrounded by his family.

Originally born in Dar es Salam, Tanzania, he moved with his family to London, attended Reed’s as one of the first students of South Asian origin and then went on to read Economics at the London School of Economics. He then moved to Karachi, Pakistan, with his father where they worked together to establish an industrial enterprise. His son Rahim (Blathwayt 1997) subsequently also attended Reed’s and now continues work on the same initiative in Pakistan.

While at Reed’s, Shiraz would cycle and explore Surrey and beyond. Shiraz was present when the Queen Mother visited in 1959, planted a tree and opened the new wing (now the 6th Form house) in which his son, Rahim, subsequently boarded.

38 years later Rahim was present when

Shiraz leaves behind his beautiful wife, Karimeh, and his two sons, Rahim and Nooruddin. He would always remark that life is dynamic.

Eddie Parsons (Bristowe 1940) July 1925 to December 2016 Eddie’s daughter wrote to let us know that sadly her father, Edwin (Eddie) Parsons passed away on 4th December 2016.

The Rev Nicolas Stacey (Former Governor) November 1927 to May 2018 We are saddened to report the death of former Reed’s Governor, The Rev. Nicolas Stacey. Nicolas David Stacey, clergyman and social services director, was born on 27 November 1927 and died on 8th May 2017.

He left the Anglican ministry because he came to believe that he was better able to try to build the kingdom of God through secular structures. He was an outstanding

director of social services for Kent from 1974 to 1985 and had a lasting practical influence outside the county. He introduced the UK’s first professional fostering scheme and individually tailored home care for older people.

Born in London, Nick was a twin, and one of three children of David Stacey, a stockbroker, and his wife, Gwen. At the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, he won the King’s Telescope (the naval equivalent of Sandhurst’s sword of honour). He resigned his commission, studied modern history at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, and sought ordination at Cuddesdon Theological College, outside the city.

While at Oxford, The Rev Stacey competed as a sprinter in the British Empire games in 1949, and in 1951 he served as captain of the combined Oxford and Cambridge athletics team. In the 1952 Olympics, he was semi-finalist in the 200m and finalist in the 4x400m relay.

In 1955 he married Anne Bridgeman who died last year, and he is survived by their three children, David, Caroline and Mary, four grandsons, two granddaughters, and his brother, the writer and publisher Tom Stacey. His twin sister, Jill, died in 2005.

Malcolm Hume (Mullens 1975) October 1956 to July 2017 We heard from Malcolm’s sister, Fiona, that he sadly passed away peacefully on 2nd July 2017 at Trinity Hospice, Blackpool with both of his sisters at his side. He had battled for four years against cancer and was aged just 60. Malcolm sadly leaves a beloved son, Scott, 21 years of age.

Malcolm’s was a Captain in the Merchant Navy and at his funeral in July, he had a guard of honour of eight from the Merchant Navy and they flew the flag at half mast at the nautical college where he trained.

Howard Young (Capel 1988) November 1969 to April 2017 Howard’s partner, Kerry Knight, emailed to let us know that sadly he had passed away unexpectedly on 12th April 2017, aged just 47. She writes: Howard passed away at home in Ipswich, Suffolk. He was born on 29th November, 1969 in Uganda, Africa to Eileen and Terence Young. Throughout his education, he gained O Levels, A Levels, a 2:1 Degree and an MA. He spent the majority of his working life working in IT with his most recent position being an IT Director for Moneyfacts.

Howard lived his life to the fullest whilst always demonstrating his huge love for family and friends. He touched many lives and was loved by all who met him.

He is survived by his Fiancee Kerry, Brother Adrian, Children, Noah and Darcey and Step-Children, Connor, Keileigh and Liberty-Rose.

John Charles Warner Mudd (London Orphan School) September 1914 to January 2017 John Charles Warner Mudd was born in September 1914, just after the start of WW1, in Leyton, East London. His father was killed in the last months of the war and his mother was left to care and provide for the children. John and his sister, Mary, were educated at London Orphan School, Watford. Their father and uncle had been educated there before them as their father (John’s grandfather) had died in a ‘flu’ epidemic in the 1890s.

In WW2 John was a conscientious objector. This brought him into contact with Quakers. He later joined the Society of Friends (Quakers). As a CO he was permitted to continue in his chosen career and helped children who had been evacuated from cities to settle in new surroundings in rural Gloucestershire.

After the war John married Evelyn who was also a teacher. They had two daughters, Sarah and Bridget.

On retirement, John and Evelyn moved to rural Dorset beginning a new chapter in their lives. He always provided practical help to others where he could. His faith, his patient kindness, his respect for nature and commitment to teaching, were an inspiration to many – his family, his pupils, and the many people who encountered him in his voluntary work.

At the age of 98 he relinquished living independently and moved to live with his elder daughter. Just before his 102nd birthday he elected to move again to Manor Lodge Care Home in Chelmsford where his daughters visited him daily. He recognised his physical needs could no longer be managed at home. “It is time to make way for the next generation”, he said.

School years were remembered fondly by John. He recognised the education he received at Reed’s School equipped him to further his studies, first at Sixth Form in Hackney Downs Grammar School, and then at Imperial College London where he gained a degree in biology. He spoke of the kindness he experienced at school from the scout mistress, the school nurse and other staff. He and his sister were able to meet up on Sunday afternoon’s for one hour. Their mother would visit every month and he greatly appreciated this.

John studied to be a teacher. He went on to build a successful career as a science teacher, house master, and finally, head teacher, and went on to set up one of the very first comprehensive schools, now Reigate School, Surrey.

He died on 23 January 2017 leaving two daughters, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Remarkable that my residing happy memories of my only brother revolve around things that Reed’s drummed into him all those years ago!”

FROM THE SCHOOL ARCHIVES Fifty Years Ago

One Hundred Years Ago

“The wide choice of activities available in the School at present may undoubtedly raise questions.”

The Great War continued to rage and claim even more lives; 1917 witnessed the highest number of deaths from within the ranks of the School’s former scholars – 29.

Those words were written in the Editorial of the Reedonian of 1967 and with some justification.

If the clubs and societies of a School mirror the interests of any given generation, then the late 1960s were an eclectic mix at Reed’s. Here is the list of clubs and societies that existed fifty years ago; The Music Society, The Christian Union, The Astronomical Society, The Political Society (Polity for short), The Sixth Form Art Society, The Printing Society, The Art Society (separate from the Sixth Form version), The Judo Club, The Junior Science Society, The Practical Chemistry Society, The Zoological Society, The Motor Car Club, The Philatelic Society, Brass Rubbing and The Motor Boat Society.

But of course that list did not include all the other activities available fifty years ago. There were Outward Bound Courses, Mountaineering and Adventure Corps, Shooting, Sailing and Skiing Holidays, not to mention the activities of the Combined Cadet Force.

The Editorial concluded, “It is impossible to say which of the many activities pursued by a boy at the school will bear fruit. A grade “A” may be less important than an interest in Drama or Public Speaking. A Society meeting may produce a future Prime Minister and a sailing holiday another Sir Francis Chichester. Failure in one field may produce success in another, and no roll of honour has yet been devised to include those boys who, somehow or other, have contributed to the School simply by the happiness and harmony they have spread by their presence, who have won no material awards, but have created part of the tone of the school. It is by helping boys to find themselves, to come to terms with the life around them that the variety of activities in the School is justified.”

The year also claimed its youngest and its oldest former pupils in the conflict.

Lance Corporal Ernest Louis Eric Brosinovich of the 8th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment was 16 years and 10 months when he was killed in action on the 16th May 1917. Notwithstanding the fact that he was too young to enlist and fight, he joined the fray and paid the ultimate price before his life had truly begun. Ernest was the son of a shipping clerk and was born in Odessa. His grandfather was a shipping and insurance broker, originally from Buccari in what was Bosnia and is now Croatia. He had come to England in the 1860s to set up a shipping business in North Shields and became a British citizen in 1868.

Ernest’s father died in Odessa in 1909, at which point he and his sister Dorothy came to England and were admitted to the School. Dorothy went on to become Head Girl and after leaving school became a teacher. For a time she was a Head Teacher in South Africa before returning to England where she held various teaching positions. She died in 1988 at the age of 89.

Ernest Alfred Howard Kighley Sprange was born in February 1877 and was the oldest former pupil to die in the conflict when he was killed in action on the 16th September 1917 at the age of 40 years and 7 months. A married man with four small children, Ernest enlisted in the Poplar and Stepney Rifles, a Territorial Battalion. After training, Ernest was posted to Belgium on the 18th August 1917.

Tragically, a mere thirty days later he was killed in action. Heavy German artillery shelling in the Ypres sector was recorded in the Battalion’s War Diary.

The short report for the 16th September recorded the casualties for that 24 hours; four killed, eleven wounded and three missing. Ernest was one of the missing three and his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate at Ypres. Ernest Sprange left behind a widow, three sons and one daughter. His widow, Emily, never remarried and died fifty eight years later in 1975 at the age of 90.

One Hundred and Fifty Years Ago

Two Hundred Years Ago

In 1867 the School was in transition. It was just getting over its worst health scare fourteen months earlier, when nearly half the School was struck down by typhoid and 15 children died, and the Governors were actively looking for a new site away from Clapton which was being encroached upon by the sprawl of East London. It was a time for strong leadership and steady nerves. The Reverend Alexander Furnice Houliston took over the reins of the Boys’ School that year. He was young, only 25 years of age on appointment, and considered as a force for good by all who came into contact with him. The Board of Managers had complete confidence in his stewardship, he was loved by the boys and held the respect of all those associated with the institution. Academically, the School progressed well under his guidance. Amazingly, given the period in question, Houliston banned corporal punishment, an act almost unprecedented at that time. In fact it took until 1986 for corporal punishment to be banned in all secondary schools, including some private schools and a further twelve years for it to be banned totally in all schools.

Tragically his time at the School was to prove all too short and he died of Consumption in 1874 at the young age of 31.

From small beginnings in 1813, the School’s registers in 1817 stood at 37 girls and 27 boys.

The girls were accommodated in rented property in Bethnal Green and the boys in Hackney. It would be another five years before the move to a purpose built school in Clapton by which time there were 100 children in care.

At the same time that Reverend Houliston was guiding the boys, Miss Emma Evans was entering her second full year as Headmistress of the Girls’ School. Emma herself had been a pupil at the School in the early 1850s, following the death of her father and the sad demise of her mother in the mental institution called Bethlem Hospital. Emma Evans brought a calm assurance to the Girls’ School following the typhoid outbreak, a point noted by the visiting external examiner: “The sound and useful knowledge imparted to the children, and the careful mental training they receive throughout the course have enabled them to witness the shock of the sad epidemic which for a time thoroughly disorganised the School. Great energy and ability, coupled with hearty devotion to the work on the part of the teachers; and on that of the children, a healthy spirit of emulation, supplemented by a grateful desire to make the best return in their power, for the care bestowed on them, could alone have achieved this.”

One of the boys at the school in 1817 was Richard Parsley Hookham. Born ten years earlier in Coventry he had eight siblings and was admitted following the death of both his parents. The School’s records show there were no relatives able to support the orphans, but no indication of what happened to the other eight Hookham children.

Richard Hookham remained at the school until the early 1820s and then embarked on what was to be a very successful and profitable business career. He became a silk robe manufacturer and for over thirty years ran his business in Oxford. At various times he went into partnership with others, not all of them were a success. The property at 3 Cornmarket Oxford still exists and had once been a tavern frequented by William Shakespeare.

Richard Hookham had a long life, dying in April 1903 in South Yardley in Worcestershire at the age of 95. There is one small footnote about Richard Hookham. In 1898 he donated £100 to the School, a little over £10,000 today, saying that he thought he would save his executors the bother! He was 90 at the time and went on to say, “I was the very first boy to come under the Institution’s wings.” His case for admission to the London Orphan Asylum was taken up and supported by the slave abolitionist William Wilberforce and Richard travelled down all night from Coventry to London by mail coach. He arrived three hours before the other four boys who were to enter the School that day and as he put it,

“thus, I think, establishing my claim to the honour of being first!”

Official records no longer exist, so we might have to take Richard’s word for it, although his friend Colpitts Harrison also claimed to be the first boy admitted to the School!

Focus on the Foundation Overview from Kathryn Bartram It is amazing to think another year has gone by, and I am now starting my fourth academic year at Reed’s. Although it is always so sad to say goodbye to another group of Sixth Form leavers, there is some comfort in knowing that they are now officially becoming part of our world as Old Reedonians.

This past year has been a busy but exciting one, where we have seen the culmination of many projects and initiatives, as well as the beginning of new ones. In total this year we have managed over 175 different events, campaigns and publications. None of this would have been possible without the incredible work of the Development Office team and the support of ORs in so many ways.

The Old Reedonian community is truly special and having the opportunity to get to know all of you makes all our jobs such a joy. It is amazing that although so much has changed at the School over the years, the very core ethos and values have remained the same. Preparing the Reed’s Heritage archive site for launch this year has particularly brought this to the fore.

We have added two new team members to the Development Office: Lucy Sadler and Ruth De Fraga Gomes. It is impossible to think how we ever managed to survive without them. Lucy has been working alongside Sharmaine on the many Old Reedonian events, as well as doing an incredible job pulling together all our mailings and reports. Ruth, as Foundation

On the marketing side, Alison Atkins is clearly doing too good a job in her role, as this January we had nearly a 35% increase in the number of applicants sitting the entrance exams to the School. Our new branding, website and prospectus have earned us accolades amongst other independent schools.

And, of course, the lynchpin of the entire OR community, Sharmaine. I am convinced she has some secret to finding more than 24 hours in a day. In addition to running all our OR events, which you will have read about, she has organised careers seminars, managed all the OR social media, run our Foundation marketing, kept in touch with our ORs, helped with fundraising, put ORs in touch with each other, reconnected ORs to the School and, alongside Andy Wotton, spear-headed the launch of the Heritage website. If you haven’t yet been on the Heritage site please log on and have a look. It has only a slightly less encyclopaedic knowledge of the OR community than Sharmaine herself.

Although the Development Office is technically a team of six, in reality we are a virtual team of nearly 3500, as so much of what we do is reliant on the support we receive from you, our ORs. So on behalf of the entire team, our Foundation pupils, and everyone at Reed’s I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you.

Ed Whiffin has earned a well-deserved promotion and is now our Events and Outreach Manager. I would extol his virtues on the event-management side, but I live in constant fear that one of our ORs may try to entice him away. He has done an incredible job expanding our outreach and

I look at our boys who are starting in The Close and I can’t help but wonder what their life journeys will be and what stories they will be telling at their Reunion Day in 2077. It is a privilege to know that in some small way, we will be a part of that journey.

OR Syndicates Through our OR Syndicate donor programme, over a hundred Old Reedonians have joined together to help 13 Foundation pupils realise their dreams of an incredible education, stable living environment and friendships that will last a lifetime.

The Syndicates are funds defined by year-group decades which allow individuals to band together to help support named Foundation pupils. The Syndicates are absolutely key in helping the Foundation provide life-changing opportunities for these deserving children, and we would like to say a very warm thank you on behalf of all the recipients.

The Simon Church & Jonathan Turner Bursary Fund (part of the 1970s OR Syndicate) Incredibly it has been 36 years since my brother, Simon Church (Mullens 1979), was tragically killed a few days shy of his 18th birthday in a motorcycle accident in the South of France alongside his friend Jonathan Turner (Blathwayt 1979). The holiday was supposed to celebrate the end of their school days and the exciting beginning of their adult lives.

An event like this has an earth shattering and long-lasting effect on families and that most certainly was the case for mine.

People react differently to awful situations and the way our family dealt with it was to bury our grief and not talk about Simon; subsequently, my parents sadly divorced.

Just before Christmas 2014 my father passed away and it made me really want to turn the finality and negativity of death into something a lot more positive and life giving.

I wanted to celebrate my brother Simon’s life and give it a lasting legacy. Working with the Development Office, I set up The Simon Church & Jonathan Turner Bursary Fund as part of the 1970s OR Syndicate.

The aim was to give a boy from a disadvantaged background the opportunity of a solid foundation and education which will help him achieve his full potential. Our initial target was to raise £7,000 which would give a Foundation pupil an annual Bursary of £1,000 for each of the seven years he would be at Reed’s.

I am delighted to say that thanks to the generosity of several of Simon’s 1970s OR contemporaries and some wonderful fundraising initiatives (see OR Event, page 42) we have actually managed to achieve funding for two boys and one girl thus far.

The most rewarding element has been that my mother and I have been able to elect which Foundation pupil Simon & Jonathan’s Fund will support, a process that has very much helped the healing process.

Looking forward, I am excited to continue collaborating with the Development Office to organise further fundraising initiatives at the School that will ensure that the wider Reed’s community can become involved in the Foundation.

Annual Foundation Appeal Fundraising for the Annual Foundation Appeal has traditionally been borne out of our long-standing connections with the City. This remains a vital part of our Foundation income, with the Appeal being one of the longest running in the country.

This year (2016/17), the Appeal has been headed by its first female President, Angela Knight CBE, and we are pleased to report that it is looking to raise around £160,000.

However, we are delighted that there have been some new income streams into the Appeal, not least of all the Cazenove Bursary Fund, subscribed to by the partners of Cazenove, supporting a Foundationer in perpetuity.

Also, we have been extremely grateful to the ORs, parents and members of the wider Reed’s community who have supported the Appeal directly or taken part in either the London Marathon or the Ride-London Surrey 100 for the Foundation. The phenomenal efforts of our runners and cyclists alone have raised over £20,000 in the last two years, which is attributed to the Annual Appeal and goes directly to helping educate our Foundation pupils.

Legacy programme – the Andrew Reed Society Each year we see an increase in the number of Foundation applications we receive which is not only a sign of the success and reputation of the education and pastoral care offered by the Foundation at Reed’s but also – sadly – the state of our society today where the need to support some of our most vulnerable is still so great.

To meet this demand, we are revitalising our legacy programme and establishing the Andrew Reed Society which recognises all donors who have pledged a legacy, whatever the amount, or have given over £100,000 to the Foundation in their lifetime.

Members of the Society (together with spouses/partners) will receive special recognition (at their discretion) through invitations to key Reed’s events, membership lapel badges and their names on our special honours boards.

All legacy donations received will automatically* go into our Endowment fund, only the income of which helps to support Foundation pupils directly. This means that a legacy is truly a gift to the Foundation in perpetuity, offering deserving children life-changing opportunities for generations to come.

This is what OR Ned Kelly (Bristowe 1978) said about his reasons for leaving a legacy: “I’m often asked: ‘Where were you educated?’ and although I’m proud to say “Reed’s”, I often think that what I received in those days in the 1970s was not so much a good education (although it was that too), but more importantly, I was ‘schooled for life’.

The education and life skills taught, cajoled, drilled, coerced and encouraged have stood me in good stead both personally and during my time as a Chaplain in the Royal Navy and now as a Prison Chaplain. It is at work in the prison where daily I meet inmates in their 20s and 30s who, if they had received a ‘schooling for life’ such as I obtained at Reed’s, would not be in a locked cell today.

As a former Foundation pupil, I probably have more reason to be thankful for my time at the School, but I know the majority of those associated with Reed’s look back at their time and realise the affirmative impact it has had on their lives and the lives of loved ones.

So, when I came to write my Will, I thought it was incumbent upon me to recognise Reed’s with a legacy gift that will ensure others in the future will be able to have the chance to be ‘schooled for life’.

I would definitely encourage others to leave their mark and remember Reed’s in their Will.”

The Richard Garrett Scholarship Award How do you recognise nearly four decades of sterling service?

W

here do you start when describing Richard’s character and his legacy to Reed’s? The most sensible place would be at the beginning!

After being educated at Kings, Wimbledon, and Durham University, Richard started his teaching career in a comprehensive school located in a very deprived area of the north of England; a million miles away from Reed’s in so many respects!

However, some of the challenges he faced no doubt shaped how he would be as a teacher in years to come. Faced with daily incidences of abuse and aggression, Richard had to cajole, coerce, encourage and engage pupils who had an utter disinterest in learning and thus no respect for the person trying to teach them.

However, showing the resilience we know he has in bucket loads, Richard persevered and, at the end of his tenure at the state comprehensive, he was presented with a specially painted glass by his pupils as a thank-you gift. It was this simple, but precious, glass that sat on Richard’s mantel shelf in his office for the 39 years he was at Reed’s, as a constant reminder of that special moment when the hard work and heartache made it all worthwhile.

Richard arrived at Reed’s in 1978, which is definitely a generation ago, as proven by the fact that several of the pupils he taught now have their children at the School! The headmaster was John Tyson and he took Richard on as an Economics teacher.

The School back then was very different. As a young teacher, Richard felt that some of the rules and regulations were not bringing out the best in

the pupils, who were always central to his thinking.

He undertook to change these – and change them he did. By the time he had become Bristowe Housemaster, he had enlisted the support of his cohort and put into place a prefect system that was respected and properly managed, as it is today.

So, what did Richard do during his 39 years at the School? Well, the question really should be what didn’t he do? Economics master, teacher of hockey, cellist, tennis coach, Housemaster (Bristowe and Capel), senior manager and latterly Development Director.

He was integral to the success of the Slater Tennis Scheme which saw the likes of Tim Henman OBE, Chris Eaton, Jamie Delgado and many others go through its ranks. This has flourished to become the Reed’s School Tennis Academy. With the same drive and determination, Richard also oversaw the development of the Reed’s FutureTech initiative, bringing together a cross-curricular programme of science, maths and design, encouraging pupils to solve tomorrow’s problems.

Richard’s passion for helping the disadvantaged was obviously a quality that was innate, as he developed our very successful Reed’s Primary and Secondary Forums, now a thriving body of nearly 40 state schools in deprived areas of London and South-East which sends around 1500 of their pupils annually to the School to take part in a unique programme of enrichment activities.

Richard’s commitment to the School is unsurpassed and so much of what Reed’s has become today is down to his tireless dedication and vision. For that, we offer our collective thanks.

Richard Garrett Scholarship Award In true Richard fashion, when we were discussing how best to recognise his contribution to the School, he said that he did not want a hall or building named after him but would like a Foundation bursary award in his name.

Consequently, we are establishing the Richard Garrett Scholarship Award. This is an endowment and the resultant scholarship awards will be presented to deserving pupils each year in recognition of their emerging talents. The award will give those students extra opportunities academically, culturally and through sport to enable them to further excel. It will also celebrate Richard’s 39 years of outstanding service to Reed’s, its pupils and its Foundation.

We hope that ORs – and those who knew Richard personally – might consider supporting his award and ensuring his legacy lives on.

Richard represents everything I love about Reed’s: the family atmosphere, the network that extends far beyond school days and the ability to never take oneself too seriously.

A great teacher and mentor for the pupils of Reed’s for many years. A delightful and caring man who was the bedrock of the school during my time.

Richard (aka Rome) was a big influence on me in my formative years as a student and resident of Bristowe between 1987 and 1992. His approach to discipline was often delivered in a humorous and disarming fashion, and his genuine concern for student welfare set him apart from many of the other masters. Tough but always fair!

My sincere congratulations to Richard on a well-deserved retirement and best wishes for his future endeavours!

FUTUREED’S

Delivering our Vision to Provide an Education for Life One of our core aims at Reed’s is to ensure we are preparing our pupils for the future.

Alongside that we need to ensure we are preparing the School infrastructure and the Foundation for the future. In order to achieve this we have established the FUTUREED’S initiative.

Education and technology have evolved dramatically since we first moved to our Cobham site nearly 75 years ago. During the same period there have been dramatic shifts in philanthropic funding patterns for the Foundation. In response

to these changes we have designed a strategic development plan to meet these shifts and ensure we are well positioned to continue to deliver an outstanding education to all our pupils for many generations to come.

and a fond farewell to the following members of staff…

Richard Garrett retired last year after having been part of the Reed’s community for 39 years as teacher, Housemaster, Head of Tennis, Head of Hockey, Senior Master and for the last ten years of his career was our Development Director. Richard is now CEO of the Tim Henman Foundation and so works closely with Tim in supporting him. We have also set up a bursary fund in Richard’s name: The Richard Garrett Scholarship Award (see page 68).

Simon Bramwell, former head of MFL, head of student mentoring and our lay preacher, is pursuing a career in the Christian Ministry. He is a brilliant teacher and we know that these communication skills will serve him well. We sincerely hope that in one of his sermons he will find an excuse to rap in German as he has done so many times at Reed’s – he has left an indelible stamp and shaped the ethos of the School in so many ways.

The multi-talented Adam Jolly has been with us for seven years and has been the quintessential schoolmaster.

We are sure that Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, where he his headed, will make great use of his talents.

Tom Rimmer has gained a promotion to Assistant Head (Sixth Form) at Sherborne College. Tom’s reputation for being a bit like an egg is because, like an egg, he is hard on the outside and soft on the inside. Tom has been an excellent Assistant Boarding Housemaster and Assistant Head of Sixth Form, teacher, and schoolmaster and so many of our Sixth Formers have been influenced and moulded by his values and support.

Mike Wright, our SSI in the CCF, has made the difficult decision to leave Reed’s after nine years of excellent service to move to the beaches of Florida, where his wife Anna will be starting a new role.

Zoe Davison moves to become Head of Art at Box Hill School.

Zoe deserves this promotion; she has been a key member of an outstanding department and we are sure she will be highly successful in her new position.

Ben Tosh has been with us for three years and moves to North London Collegiate School. Ben started his career at Reed’s and has been an outstanding teacher of Drama over the last three years. He is a product of the Reed’s teaching programme and we know he will be highly successful.

Aoife O’Donavan, who has taught Chemistry, is moving back to Ireland to pursue a career in industry.

Although only with us for a year, she has made a wonderful contribution both inside and outside of the classroom and we wish her well.

Simon Pyburn, who taught Chemistry, is moving to the Royal School in Haslemere. Although only with us for a year, he has made a wonderful contribution and we wish him well.

Graham Spawforth joined Reed’s in 2007 as our Deputy Head and during his 10 year tenure, gained the respect of all around him, not least the pupils, staff and parents. We wish Graham and his family well as he takes up the post of Headmaster at Ditcham Park School in Petersfield. (Look out for a more indepth profile of Graham in the next edition of the Reeder.)

As Admissions Registrar for over 12 years, Richard Gilliat oversaw the growth of the School from around 400 pupils to the thriving 700 we are today.

He brought a wealth of experience with him from Charterhouse where he held the position of Second Master, and not least as former Captain of Hampshire CCC. He and Pauline will be sorely missed, but we know they will be fully occupied with the arrival of their new grandchild.

MEET YOUR OR TEAM

Nigel Taunt (Mullens 1971) OR President & Chair of OR Committee I left Reed’s in 1971 and followed a traditional path through university and chartered accountancy training which led to 20 years as Finance Director of various industrial, technology and financial businesses. In 2001, I moved into corporate finance and, latterly, venture capital investing. I have now retired, although I still look after one legacy investment.

During the 1970s I played rugby and cricket for the ORs, enjoying rugby tours and captaining the OR cricket team, although my primary sporting focus then was squash. Sporting “retirement” may have been due to injury, marriage or the arrival of children but, regardless, I played a bit of golf and continue to do so.

I have been OR President, a Governor of Reed’s School and a member of the Board of Reed’s School Enterprises for nearly three years. It has been a very enjoyable new challenge for me and I have enjoyed meeting many ORs and sharing ideas on how we can take the organisation forward.

Justyn Herbert (Capel 1983) Vice President ORs & OR Committee member I left Reed’s in 1983 and studied hotel management at Westminster College, after which I started a management training course at The Savoy for three years. I then worked at The Ritz, the Stafford and Dukes Hotel, where I stayed until 1993. I was the Finance Director for London Bridge Hotel for ten years and now work for Luxury Hotel Partners as Commercial Director, which is owned by the operators of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.

I am Chair of Governors at a local primary school. Through my connection, Reed’s are very involved in this school and provide many of the children with opportunities they may never experience otherwise.

As an OR from the 1980s, I have met a few leavers from this era, but I am actively looking for more. The School offers many functions for the ORs, and it would be great if you could attend some.

Roger Mew (Bristowe 1959) OR Committee member Aged between 5 and 11, I was a boarder at Andrew Reed’s Royal Wanstead School.

On passing 11+, I transferred with nine others to Cobham in 1953 to join Bristowe.

I did not excel at sport generally but represented the school at boxing as well as learning piano and clarinet. I was Secretary of the Woodwind Orchestra, a member of the Choir, the Jazz Club, the Cycling Club and a Corporal in CCF.

I left Reed’s in 1959 and, after travelling and working in Europe, finally settled down in the financial world. I eventually became a tax consultant, which still occupies me on a part-time, freelance basis.

I enjoy immensely the renewed friendships of ORs and running the online 50s Forum.

Andy Wotton (Mullens 1975) OR Committee member Leaving Reed’s in 1975, I joined National Westminster Bank (as it was once known!) and essentially had two careers with the organisation. The first was in what would now be considered “traditional branch banking.” The second was in the Training and Development arm of the bank.

Now retired, I always look forward to the summer months, when I can watch cricket, be it at the School, at County level or Test matches, all of which I find both absorbing and enjoyable. I have always been very interested in history and recently I undertook some research about the life and work of Andrew Reed, which has led me to become more interested and engaged in the work of the Foundation and the heritage of the School.

It can seem rather daunting to make contact with people you were at school with, and for some there is no interest in doing so. It took me almost 40 years to take the plunge! Matt Ridsdale (Bristowe 2003) OR Committee member I left Reed’s in 2003. Whilst at the school I was a keen hockey player, dabbled at other sports and was a regular contributor to school productions and arts festivals. Since leaving Reed’s I have pursued a career in the City latterly as a Director of Tavistock Communications and recently as Director of Corporate Affairs at Camelot.

Jerry Ross (Mullens 2008) OR Committee member Having joined Reed’s Sixth Form in 2006, from Oakfield School in Pyrford, I totally immersed myself in all the opportunities available, from Calabash, DofE, CCF, LST, Performing Arts, Toastmasters, Netball and a new-found love of Hockey.

My role is to act as a conduit between individual ORs and the Committee, ensuring that OR’s views are represented and their needs are catered for at OR events and within the community more generally.

Clive Moon (Blathwayt 1994) OR Committee member After leaving school, I attended university in Wales studying History and Drama.

Post university my first job was in Investment Banking for the US bank, Salomon Brothers. After a few years, I realised my interests lay elsewhere and I began my current career in property.

Since 2007 I have worked for Savills, running our Wimbledon office for just under nine years, and I have recently transferred to run our Guildford team, looking after our business in Surrey and across into Sussex.

I left Reed’s with life long-friends and family. Whilst my sister finished her final year at Reed’s, I went on to Oxford Brookes University to continue my studies in English Literature and Geography.

To that end, I am always keen to hear from ORs of all ages but particularly, those who left in the ten years since the millennium. Please contact me via the Development Office. If you don’t currently receive news of events or invitations do write in and we’ll ensure you’re on our list for the next one.

I joined the public sector as an Intelligence Researcher within law enforcement and found a real niche and love for the business. I recently left law enforcement to challenge my skills in a new arena; that of private security.

I joined the ORs Committee to keep engaged with those still at Reed’s and reconnect with those who left in the latter days of the ‘noughties’. I’m particularly interested in representing your views as fellow ORs and raising the profile of the ever-growing female community now establishing itself in the Old Reedonians’ network. Lucy Hurford Treasurer to OR Committee & Bursar, Reed’s School I was educated at St Teresa’s School, Ruskin University and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.

Mark Hoskins Headmaster, Reed’s School I was educated at Gowerton School and at the University of Nottingham where I read Economics. After working briefly for the Civil Service as an economist, I studied for my PGCE at the University of London and then entered the teaching profession. I have a Master’s degree in Education from the University of London and a Master’s degree in Applied Economics from SOAS, University of London.

I was previously Second Master (Senior Deputy Head) at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, and before that was Head of Middle School and Head of Economics and Business Studies at Whitgift School. I took up my post at Reed’s in September 2014.

My wife, Sharon, and our two children – Oliver (a current Reedonian) and Imogen – are loving being part of the Reed’s community; I enjoy working with governors, staff, parents, pupils and Old Reedonians to continue to build on Reed’s School’s many successes.

I taught at Seaford Head Community College and Chichester High School for Boys before joining Hewlett Packard to train as a management accountant. I then started a career as a Bursar at Ripley Court School in 2008 before joining Reed’s as Bursar & Secretary to the Governors in January 2013.

I married Ed in 1998 and we have three children. Both my boys currently attend Reed’s and are thriving from its excellent education and pastoral care.

Kathryn Bartram Development & Marketing Director, Reed’s School As an American I have been on the receiving end of Alumni communications since finishing nursery school, so it has been a fantastic experience to be on the other side. I really love what I do and can not imagine a better workplace: fantastic colleagues, incredible grounds and an amazing group of ORs.

I live just down the road in Oxshott with my husband, Jacob, and our two children, James (ten) and Caroline (eight). Working within my own community is something special and I know many Reed’s families personally as well as professionally.

Bumping into either a Reed’s parent, pupil, OR, staff member or even a governor in the local shops is now the norm.

After nearly 20 years in the corporate world it is wonderful to work in an educational and charitable environment where you can really see the impact of all you do.

Lucy Sadler Alumni & Development Officer, Reed’s School I grew up in Cobham and was educated at Notre Dame and Exeter University. After leaving university I worked in the City of London where I pursued a career in marketing and PR. After many fantastic years, I decided to return to Cobham where I live with Tom and our son Noah.

In January 2017, I joined the School as an Alumni & Development Officer; a position I was delighted to have been offered. It is an honour to have joined the support structure behind this prestigious School and I take great pride in being part of such a reputable and positive establishment.
