About us

In 1915, Sacred Heart Hospital opened its doors to its first patient and began a tradition of commitment to Pensacola and the surrounding communities. The Hospital’s mission was, and is, to serve all who are ill and injured, young and old, with a special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable.

The Hospital’s tradition began through another tradition: the tradition of philanthropy, of giving to help others. For it was through the vision and generosity of one man who contributed $500, and his 19 friends, who he solicited for matching gifts of $500, that gave our community the ultimate gift – Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital.

Formed in 1984, Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation, certainly, is much younger but we share the same traditions, mission, and values. The Foundation seeks contributions and volunteer participation to support patient care, programs, and leading-edge technologies at Ascension Sacred Heart Health System. With your support, we bring hope and healing to all who enter our doors.

Message of gratitude

Dear Friends,

As the new president of Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation, I am filled with gratitude for this very special opportunity, and I am thankful for our previous leaders who have served and accomplished amazing things for our foundation over its 38-year history.

Some of our most challenging years are behind us. I cannot think how we might have gotten through the pandemic without the hope, perseverance, and faith that we would eventually move beyond it to a better place. Hope is such a powerful emotion. When you give to our foundation, you are investing in hope and healing for the patients and families we serve across the region, and I could not think of any greater gift.

I am very grateful for the trust placed in us. We have a tremendous responsibility as a foundation – to respect and fulfill that trust. To the thousands of individuals, organizations and foundations who commit to our mission of care and caring each year, thank you. It is incredibly inspiring and touching to know you choose to invest your time, treasures, and resources into our mission.

When people come to us in their most difficult and trying times, we respond with compassionate, personalized care, never turning anyone in need away. For over 100 years, we’ve been here for people in every season of life, and we will continue the call to service for the next 100 + years.

My vision for the foundation is for the community to see us as the most trusted not-for-profit organization in the community; one that engages and connects people who want to make an impactful difference. Your generosity and giving will not only help sustain the future of Ascension Sacred Heart but will also be a catalyst for change.

Our work at the foundation in the year ahead will continue on a steady course to bring this vision to life. From pennies in the piggy bank to lasting legacies, your generosity and passion has a place here. You make an incredible impact and join more than a century of “giving to help others.”

Gratefully,

Charity Golf Classic

It was a gorgeous Fall day of great golf, laughter and back-slapping; of generous hearts; and of smiles and the satisfaction of knowing that a worthy cause was served while honoring the camaraderie of our beautiful community. Golfers helped raise a total of $227,982 through the 19th Annual Charity Golf Classic, which was applied to the purchase of the most advanced CT scanner available on the market.

Held on Oct. 1 at Burnt Pine Golf Club at Sandestin, the tournament was made possible by presenting sponsors Silver Sands Premium Outlets and Watercrest Santa Rosa Beach. Serving as tournament co-chairs were Bill Tate and Cory Fosdyck, who coordinated the successful event with committee members Joe Capers, Charlie White, Scott Campbell, Kelly Curry and Dr. Daniel R. Buchan.

A total of 30 golf teams participated, with Team VDT Construction capturing first place. Breakfast, lunch and on-course food and beverages were provided to golfers, and the event included live entertainment by The Backsliders and a live auction with a chance for four to travel and play in the inaugural Play Yellow Invitational at PGA Spa and Resort.

Since 2002, the Charity Golf Classic has raised more than $3 million for various expansion efforts. At Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast, including the Olson Women’s Center, the Family Birth Place, the Judy & Steve Turner Heart and Vascular Center, Cancer Center, the Emergency Department and the Comprehensive Spine Program.

Emerald Ball

The black-tie Emerald Ball, benefitting Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital Emerald Coast and held at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa, was an occasion where guests could relax and reconnect following two years in which the event was not held due to COVID-19. They danced to music provided by the Tribute Show Band from Mobile, Alabama; enjoyed meals prepared by the Hilton Sandestin catering staff; joined in a bourbon and wine pull and gathered for photos.

Presented by Howard Group, Grand Boulevard Sandestin Town Center, Silver Sands Premium Outlets and Jim and Tammy Pierce, more than 290 community members, physicians and supporters gathered on April 30, 2022, for a night of celebration that raised $190,666 for the purchase of a state-of-the-art CT scanner. This new technology is part of a continuing effort by Ascension Sacred Heart to provide care that is consistent with its designation as one of the top 100 hospitals in the nation.

Radiothon

The Cat Country Cares for Kids Radiothon is a one day, 13 hour event hosted by Cat Country 98.7 personalities Brent Lane and Mel McCrae; WEAR ABC 3 News Pensacola host Sue Straughn; and NewsRadio 92.3 and ESPN Pensacola. Radiothon brings the community together to hear stories from patient families, physicians, and leaders about the impact of our local Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Ascension Sacred Heart. A Children’s Miracle Network event, Radiothon has raised funds and awareness for many needs over the years. In the past 5 years, Radiothon has helped fund the new standalone Studer Family Children’s Hospital, the Bear Family Foundation Pediatric Oncology Center for Hope, and a Neonatal Transport Unit equipped with a specialized incubator. In 2021, the event raised over $76,000! Year over year, we are blown away by the support our community shows during this event and we are thrilled to know the impact that it brings.

Our vision is to have not only in the krewe’s name ‘For the Little Ones’, but featuring the little ones: The children in need, the children that will need the services of Studer Family Children’s Hospital, and the children whose parents have decided to invest and give.”

Krewe of Les Petits Enfants giving society

For the little ones, with the little ones

Autumn and Peyton Blackledge are inaugural chairpersons of the official Krewe of Les Petits Enfants (Order of the Small Children Giving Society), named in honor of those whose needs it will help support.

Autumn, a long-time member of Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation’s Board, and her husband Peyton, a professional firefighter in the city of Milton, are natives of Pensacola. Their marriage resulted in a blended family of five children. Today, the eldest is serving in the Navy, stationed in England, while the other four are teens in every grade at Central Catholic High School –from freshman to senior.

Autumn and Peyton are delighted that they’ve been given the opportunity to kick-off a krewe at Northwest Florida’s largest Mardi Gras Ball of the season. But what inspires them the most about this project is that children will be the focus, the face of the krewe. Autumn explains, “Our vision is to have not only in the krewe’s name ‘For the Little Ones’, but featuring the little ones: The children in need, the children that will need the services of Studer Family Children’s Hospital, and the children whose parents have decided to invest and give.”

Autumn was taught at an early age that, “You give your talents, you give your time, you give your treasure.” She and Peyton are trying to impress this mindset upon their children that when you are blessed with more, you need to give back, to help those less fortunate. They point out that the community’s future charitable needs will not continue to be met unless children learn

early-on what giving is all about, and then carry forth this tradition as adults. Introducing kids to the Krewe of Les Petites Enfants through their parent’s membership will be a valuable first step. The hope is to help create generations of givers.

Autumn and Peyton are staunch advocates of the Studer Family Children’s Hospital and consider it a blessing to have this resource “in our own back yard.” When their daughter was injured in a car accident, she was transported to its emergency room where the care she received was exceptional.

From the perspective of a fireman, Peyton expresses concern that the community sometimes seems to take for granted the presence of this amazing trauma center. It is often mentioned during his training that children from Tallahassee, Baldwin County, Brewton, and the Mobile region are flown to the Studer Family Children’s Hospital for treatment. He states, “Being as we are not a large community, it is an enormous benefit and opportunity for the children in our area. Care for children can remain right here where they reside.”

Panda Cares Center of Hope

Panda Express pledged $1.25 million to Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Ascension Sacred Heart, a gift that will provide ongoing support for the hospital’s pediatric services and programs that provide compassionate, healing care. Funds for this philanthropic contribution are made possible through the generous giving of Panda Express customers and associates.

As part of this pledge, a room within the Bear Family Foundation Pediatric Oncology Center for Hope has been renamed The Panda Cares Center of Hope™ Movie and Multipurpose Room, a respite area for young patients and their families going through cancer treatment.

It features an underwater submarine theme, two movie screens, arcade-like games and comfortable seating. The Panda Cares Center was purposefully designed to not only entertain kids, but also to provide a peaceful, homelike space away from the medical atmosphere where children – sometimes spending 30 days at a time in treatment for oncology – experience programs that address their mental, emotional, physical and spiritual needs.

Since 2007, Panda Express has proudly served as a Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Partner. Dr. Peggy Cherng, co-founder and co-CEO of Panda Restaurant Groups, said, “We are humbled to be able to be part of the healing journey for the families at these hospitals.

Children are our future. We hope that through this partnership, we will bring smiles and hope to communities nationwide.”

In fulfillment of its charitable mission to “Inspire Better Lives’, Panda Express has raised nearly $500,000 for Studer Family Children’s Hospital since 2010. Foundation President Adrienne Maygarden says, “We cannot provide the level of support and services we do for our children without donors like Panda Express, devoting their time, their resources , and their philanthropy to this very vulnerable population. On behalf of every child fighting childhood cancer, thank you for your generous commitment.”

Lynn McKenzie: Supporting the hospital

Gifting the community

Lynn McKenzie has traveled down many a path in her life’s journey: Accomplished equestrian…avid cook… devoted mother…skillful gardener…patron of the arts… supporter of non-profit organizations. But there is one path Lynn encountered in 1990 that made a big difference in that journey.

At the time, she and husband Tom lived in Navarre Beach close to the emerald waters of the Gulf, when they decided they wanted another house. So they opted to make use of a lot purchased from the St. Joe Company to build a new home. Lynn returned to the residence they owned in Tallahassee, where she began working on their beach house plans – only to discover she was a “first-rate” architect! With her own drafting board, she designed the lighting system for the home to be constructed. When she gave it to the location architect, he exclaimed, “You just caused us to change our whole electrical planning system,” to their benefit. She used her new-found talent to help build and design three major homes, also renovating many more, explaining, “We always had a house here and a house there, one in Key West, houses on the bay and on the rivers, because we loved being on the water.”

Lynn grew up in Swansboro, Georgia. She attended Florida State University, and while living in Tallahassee, was introduced to Tom McKenzie, whom she married a year later. They moved to Pensacola, where her husband worked for the family business and their son Edson was born. Lynn confesses that she “fell in love” with the area, which led to the acquisition of a boat and a passion for deep sea sport fishing.

Years later, when they were living in the beach house Lynn participated in designing, Tom’s health began to fail. He was often a patient at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital, or in rehabilitation, during the decade she cared for him.

When Assisted Living and Memory Care became necessary for Tom, Lynn decided to sell their beach home and buy another residence closer to his location, making it easier to visit. But shortly after she acquired a house in Miramar Beach, Tom passed away. Lynn confesses she didn’t know a soul in the area she moved to, but soon discovered she was blessed with wonderful neighbors who became close friends. The “Gang of Ten”, as they became known, continues to enjoy many social activities together.

Lynn recently made a transformational gift to Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital, where she had “wonderful service and really good care” when she underwent emergency surgery and spent ten days there. But that is not the only reason for her gift. She supports the hospital because its presence is vital to the community. She encourages friends to contribute and help sustain the hospital, since it is the area’s single source of outstanding healthcare services for all its residents, turning no one in need away. And she believes, “When you have a good hospital, you have a good community.”
