As President of Sacred Heart Foundation, I have the honor and pleasure of meeting with a diverse group of individuals connected by a similar passion — serving others to help leave their community better than they found it. Thank you for your gifts of support during the past year. Your support has had a direct impact on the lives of thousands of individuals and families. Your continued support will serve as the bedrock of our effort to provide vital new equipment, advanced technologies and expanded capabilities to The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart in Pensacola and our Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast campus in Miramar Beach. GIVING BACK Bubba and Angie Watson Partner with Studer Family Children’s Hospital for a Major Gift

W

While living away from Pensacola in Arizona and Orlando, Bubba Watson fell subject to the magnetic influence exerted by the Gulf of Mexico on many who have experienced Northwest Florida. And, for Watson, that pull was joined by a powerful homing instinct. Those combined forces proved irresistible and Watson, relenting, assured himself that if LeBron James could go back to Cleveland, surely he could return to his roots. He is glad he did, and now he and his family and his foundation are engaged in publicly embracing Pensacola, working generously to make it a better place and, in particular, doing what they can to bring about the realization of The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart. With two gifts made in August and September, Watson, a professional golfer with two Masters Tournament titles on his resumé, donated a total of $2.1 million to the Children’s Hospital project. “We are eternally grateful,” said Henry Stovall, president of

Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola. “Bubba is one of the biggest supporters that this hospital has ever had.” Work on the $85 million, 120,000-square-foot children’s hospital began in March. “In my business, winning a trophy is great,” Watson said. “I do that, and on Sunday night, I’m a hero. When the world moves on so quickly, you begin to ask yourself how to make a longterm difference, one that will last for generations to come. For me, supporting the Children’s Hospital is the answer.” Watson’s connection to Sacred Heart in Pensacola is lifelong. He and his sister were born there, and his father underwent cancer treatments there. “I won’t always be Bubba Watson the golfer, but, as a person, I will always be a representative of this town and indebted to it,” Watson said. “People here helped me become better at the game of golf and shaped who I became as a person.” Watson is an admirer of healthcare consultant and children’s hospital namesake Quint Studer, with whom he co-owns the Pensacola Blue Wahoos minor league baseball team. Studer shared with Watson his vision for the children’s hospital, first at a baseball game and subsequently at his home. Those conversations got Watson to thinking and led to prayerful consideration and conversation at the Watson house. “The Lord has given us an amazing platform with which to be helpful, and we want to see this project and this dream come true,” said Bubba’s wife, Angie. “When we adopted our daughter, Dakota, we were at a hospital in California for four days, and we enjoyed a sense of relationship

“The Lord has given us an amazing platform with which to be helpful, and we want to see this project and this dream come true.” – ANGIE WATSON with hospital personnel at every level. That experience inspired me and drove my desire to support a world-class children’s hospital right in Pensacola.” Angie said that the children’s hospital undoubtedly will have a regional impact. “It’s not a stretch to say that people from a large radius will come to Sacred Heart for services, and many of them will fall in love with Pensacola while they’re here. As a parent of two children (the Watsons also have an adopted son, Caleb), I know that healthcare, along with schools, is one of the things you think about when you decide where to raise a family. Having one of the best children’s hospitals in the country here will be a big factor for people.” To Bubba, supporting the hospital feels like acing a par 3. “I am far from perfect,” he said. “I make a lot of mistakes, as a parent, as a husband and especially on the golf course — I make a lot of bogeys. The goal for me is always to get better. I benefitted from a community that supported junior golf and enabled me to make progress toward living my dream. Now, it’s good to be able to give back.”

BILL GREENHUT

O

A century of service

One thing you might not know about Bill Greenhut is that he has ties with Sacred Heart Health System (SHHS) dating back to 1913. A native Pensacolan, Bill’s heritage includes Adolph Greenhut, who led a delegation of 12 community leaders to Emmittsburg, Maryland, to ask the Daughters of Charity to come to Pensacola and run a hospital. They accepted, and that was the birth of SHHS. Bill joined Sacred Heart Hospital’s Advisory Board in 1977 primarily because of his appreciation for the neonatal services that helped his son. “But,” he says, “it was the spirit of the Daughters of Charity sisters who inspired me to get more involved. Their dedication to service, to the poor, healing both body and spirit, and courageous faith was awesome. There is no greater feeling than making a difference in someone’s life.” Today he credits Susan Davis, CEO of SHHS, with being “not only a great leader but also a courageous visionary.” Sacred Heart has the only dedicated Children’s Hospital from Pensacola to Gainesville. It was established in 1969, and the current Children’s Hospital was built in 1996 — 21 years ago. With technology changing so rapidly, as well as patient and family needs, a new Children’s Hospital is needed to meet current demands. “Susan recognized these needs and was able to steer this dream to reality, based on our ability to fund about one-third of the project with philanthropy.” “I hope my legacy will be that I was a caring and loving dad and husband, someone proud of his offspring and their families, someone who cared about others, especially those less fortunate, and someone who wanted to make the community better.”

SEEING

Jesus

THROUGH THE EYES OF

D

Rachel McFarland, RN, Med/Surg, had an experience with an unforgettable patient at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf in Port St. Joe, Florida. During my new-hire training, I crossed paths with one patient I will never forget. He was a gruff, grumpy man, not the cleanest nor the most polite person. He was struggling with respiratory problems and alcoholism. He was constantly on the call light, calling for more assistance or ready to share his latest complaint. One time when I was in the room with him, he told me he would like to get a shower because it had been a few days since he had been out of bed and he felt like he had the strength that day. He started bathing himself and asked for my assistance to help clean his feet because he was unable to bend down and reach his feet without getting short of breath. I bent down and started to scrub his feet. A few moments later I felt his hand on my shoulder. I looked up at him and he was weeping. Through his tears, he said, “Today you have washed my feet like Jesus did, and for that you will be blessed.” I was immediately humbled. I felt convicted of my negative and judgmental attitude. Oftentimes, the patients who have the hardest outward countenance are the ones who are hurting the most internally — lonely, struggling with the chains of addiction or personal strongholds. In that moment, the position of my heart was changed toward this man. Since then, I have come in contact with several other patients who may be deemed as difficult or needy. I've prayed to see them through the eyes of Jesus — to see as He does, to love them as He does, to love them like He loves me.

DAN MCMILLAN

D

A Trustee of the Past, Present & Future

Dan McMillan carries a great responsibility as managing trustee of the D. W. McMillan Trust and its Foundation in Brewton, Alabama. His work calls for celebrating the family’s past, supporting certain needs of the present and looking to the community’s future. While his family’s roots in Brewton date back to before the turn of the century, the legacy Dan manages was born in 1929 when his great grandfather, Ed Leigh McMillan, Esq. drew up a trust for Dr. Dan McMillan’s considerable assets. Dr. Dan worked at the old Sacred Heart Hospital on Twelfth Avenue where he treated patients regardless of their ability to pay, in keeping with the Daughters of Charity’s mission. He wanted that charitable work to continue and stipulated that “charitable money would go to the poor and needy of the two Escambia counties (Alabama and Florida) without regard to color, race or creed, whether they were worthy or unworthy.” Today the D.W. McMillan Foundation contributes to more than 80 different health and welfare organizations, including Sacred Heart. “We have been able to grow and provide more and more benefits, grants and contributions to the betterment of communities such as Pensacola, Atmore, Brewton and beyond,” Dan says. “A lot of our giving,” Dan says, “goes to organizations that provide medical services, but a lot of it also goes to long-term things — like investing in The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart. Sacred Heart did a lot of work in the past to make itself known as being at the forefront of providing the best care and medical attention for our community’s children. In the future, they will be known throughout the Southeast for children’s care. “I have been fortunate that I’ve been able to play a part in carrying forth the work of giving back that my family began so many years ago. It is kind of like one of the lines in a song by Jewel, ‘I am an accumulation of the dreams of generations.’ Now I have an opportunity to make a difference.”

REAGAN REESE MASON & Miracles Do Happen

W

When Johnathan Mason came running across the finish line as the winner of the Everyday Hero 5K Run/Walk on May 13, 2017, the crowd roared and cameras flashed. But the applause perhaps wasn’t for him as much as it was for the baby stroller he had been pushing in front of him for the entire run. It held identical twins: 2-year-old sisters who were enthusiastically enjoying the experience that day as much as their dad was. However, when Reagan and Reese Mason were born at The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart, their parents Jonathan and Janna could hardly envision how their babies would become so healthy and robust, because the twins came into this world several months premature, with Reagan weighing 2 pounds, 10 ounces, while Reese was but 1 pound, 12 ounces. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) became their lifesaving home, each provided with care in separate, state-of-the-art isolettes that would protect them and enable them to grow. After their birth, Reagan and Reese were treated in the Level III Trauma unit for intensive medical care of critically ill and premature newborns. They were in separate isolettes, in separate rooms. But when the sisters graduated to Level II Trauma, they were cared for in isolettes next to each other. “Then for the first time we got a family picture,” Jonathan says. “That was one of my favorite memories.” More than 1,000 babies are admitted to The Children’s Hospital NICU each year, with about 80 percent born prematurely, defined as coming into this world between 2 and 16 weeks early. The NICU is staffed 24 hours a day by neonatal nurses, developmental specialists,

therapists and technicians, along with seven of this country’s best neonatologists (pediatricians with specialized training in the care of critically ill infants). The average stay in the NICU is around 24 days, with the Sacred Heart’s unit of 67 beds often at capacity. Fortunately, the new, expansive four-story Children’s Hospital currently under construction will ease the community’s growing demand for specialized pediatric care. “Our new Children’s Hospital will strive to provide one consolidated healthcare home that is designed with a child’s needs in mind,” said Susan Davis, CEO of Sacred Heart Health System. It will also feature a larger, even more advanced NICU to provide care for extremely premature neonates such as Jonathan and Janna’s daughters. Jonathan participated in that 5K run pushing his daughters because the event was being held in honor of Sacred Heart’s “Everyday Heroes”: the doctors, nurses, parents, caregivers, service members, first responders, donors and volunteers such as those who provided care for Reagan and Reese. Moreover proceeds from the run benefited The Children’s Hospital. Miracles do happen, as Jonathan and Janna can testify to. Reagan was able to come home after six weeks and Reese was discharged after eight weeks. “Today,” Jon says, “we really enjoy trying to contain the energy of our children.” The couple was introduced to the care provided at Sacred Heart early on in Janna’s pregnancy when she saw a maternal fetal specialist and found out that she was at high risk. From that point on, Janna says, “Absolutely, we felt we got the specialized care we needed. There was always somebody to answer our questions. Staff went above and beyond to make sure we understood what we needed to do and what was happening. “We were completely okay with leaving our babies in the NICU. They were in the best place, where they needed to be to get better and stronger. “It was very traumatic to go through. The whole experience changed our lives forever, but I think it has made us better parents, more patient with our children.” They feel it is important for young families to know that the best possible neonatal specialized care is available right here in our community. They were thankful that they did not have the added stress of transporting their babies to Birmingham or Gainesville for care. While the Daughters of Charity who founded Sacred Heart Hospital in 1915, made sure it had a pediatric ward, they would hardly recognize the state-of-theart pediatric care available to this community today. But they would be gratified to know that their mission will continue on by serving the future needs of sick and injured babies and children in a new, larger, even more advanced Children’s Hospital — Northwest Florida’s only hospital solely dedicated to the care of the young, turning no one in need away.

B AN HAYWARD

“It’s All About the Kids”

12 Sacred Heart Foundation

Born and raised in Antwerp, Belgium, An Hayward was a dancer for the Royal Ballet of Flanders when she was discovered by a modeling agency some 25 years ago. Today as a well-recognized model for Chico’s, her career is still going strong. She enjoys serving on the Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola Advisory Council, which she admits is a “new world” for her. But in that role, there could hardly be a better ambassador. She is a strong advocate for Sacred Heart becoming known throughout the nation as an exceptional healthcare system. “I want the new Children’s Hospital to become a destination hospital. I want people to know that we are competing with the best of the best. It’s just a matter of telling our story,” says An. “It all started with three sisters who had a vision for this hospital: to help those in need, a hospital that doesn't turn anyone away — and look where we are today!” Married to Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward, they have a son Aiden, whom An describes as her “pride and joy. Family is everything to me. It’s the pillar of my existence. It’s where it all starts. “I’ve been extremely blessed in my life,” she says. “And my mantra is that when you receive, you have to give back.” Part of that is being a strong supporter of fundraising for the new Children’s Hospital. “I believe in Sacred Heart Hospital for many reasons, but for me it’s all about the kids. I know what it’s like to be a new parent with a sick child.” When Aiden was born at Sacred Heart Hospital 13 years ago, he required care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. “When you have a child with certain needs,” An says, “you do not want to have to travel to another healthcare facility out of your community. You want it to be in the city where you live. Our kids are our future, and it’s our responsibility to nurture their needs.”

The

SCHLOSSBERG FAMILY

A “I was given unbelievably wonderful care, I watched how they cared for me, I watched how these nurses cared for my daughter; I could do that too.”

— ASHLEY SCHLOSSBERG

A mother with a life-threatening illness delivered a baby barely old enough to survive, and her medical ordeal led to a new career and purpose. When Ashley Schlossberg was 24 weeks pregnant, she was diagnosed with a severe case of preeclampsia and a liver disorder called HELLP Syndrome. The way she put it, her body was shutting down and trying to reject the baby inside her. At just 25 weeks and six days, her doctors told her there was no choice; they had to take the baby, and Lauren was born weighing 1 lb., 5 oz., and measuring at just 12 ½ inches long. “We had to be separated for both of us to survive,” Schlossberg explained. Lauren spent six months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart, and Ashley and her husband, Scott, went home without their baby. “It was a dark time for us,” says Ashley, who notes that “I did everything right during my pregnancy,” but she still developed the condition that affects 5 percent to 8 percent of pregnant women. She was so small, the caregivers had to improvise. “Because she was so unbelievably tiny, to keep her insulated and to keep her body temperature up, they had to put her in a quart-size Ziploc bag. Can you imagine?” Schlossberg said. Lauren is now 6 years old. Looking at her, you’d never guess she came into the world with just a 50 percent chance of survival. “The reason she is doing so well is because of the doctors and nurses at Sacred Heart,” says Ashley. Her birth was a turning point for her mom. “When I was younger and I was in high school, my mom always said, ‘I think you’d be a great nurse. I think you need to think about being a nurse when you got to college,’” Ashley remembered. “And I’m like, ‘No, I’m not interested in college.’ When I was 18, I wasn’t.” Now, after five years of juggling school and motherhood, Ashley is now a registered nurse at Sacred Heart. “I was given unbelievably wonderful care, I watched how they cared for me, I watched how these nurses cared for my daughter; I could do that too,” Ashley said. She works on a med-surg floor, and isn’t sure if she’ll ever be ready to work in the NICU. But she knows she has the power to touch lives. “I can give back, and I can give what was given to me,” Ashley said.

JIMMY NEILSON

T

Committed to the Community

The community of Destin would hardly be the same today without Jimmy Neilson’s commitment to its betterment. But there is one particular community asset Jimmy’s leadership contributed to that has significantly impacted the Destin area in a way no other organization could: Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast (SHHEC). “At the time, I could see that there was a serious need for a hospital in our area and I was driven to do something about it,” he says. His passionate commitment to making SHHEC a reality was reflected in extensive fundraising for the new facility. “I knew it was going to be an excellent hospital giving superior healthcare for all.” And, yes, he was there for its groundbreaking ceremony in 2001, shovel in hand. Over the years, Jimmy feels he has been blessed to be able to support SHHEC in a variety of ways. “Sacred Heart has been the greatest success story of our time on the Emerald Coast,” he says. “I have met many people who chose to live in this beautiful area mainly because of our hospital. Look at the patient satisfaction survey — it is in the 98th, 99th percentile.”

“Any project is possible when approached with honesty, integrity and character.” Jimmy’s successful community and professional leadership has always revolved around his work ethic. “In all of the activities and everything I have ever done, I always had the best interest of the organization in mind, and I never, ever had a personal agenda. I always looked for the positive in all situations.” His father taught him, “Any project is possible when approached with honesty, integrity and character.” As Chair of the SHHEC Advisory Council and the Foundation Development Board, he supports capital fundraising efforts that will facilitate the hospital’s mission to continually grow, expand and improve healthcare for all. “My legacy is simple — I would like to leave my community better than I found it.”

WELCOMING OUR FIRST GUEST Just One Day After Opening

T

The first baby born at the newly expanded Family Birth Place at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast (SHHEC) arrived before 3 p.m. just one day after the new postpartum rooms opened. Sage Lucas was born to Shanelle Lucas at 2:47 p.m. and was the first baby born since the opening of the new postpartum suites at the Family Birth Place, part of the $30 million expansion at SHHEC. Sage was born at 6 pounds, 9 ounces, and a perfect 20 inches long. The growth and success of the Family Birth Place at SHHEC during its first 10 years has been unprecedented. With six obstetricians and a growing service area, the Family Birth Place delivers more than 1,200 babies a year. The added suites for new mothers nearly doubled the previous capacity for maternity services. The inpatient expansion includes 12 new postpartum rooms and 12 new inpatient rooms, bringing the total number of inpatient beds to 76 for the hospital. All inpatient rooms throughout the hospital are private rooms with a private bathroom.

“This is the community’s hospital,” Susan Davis, President and CEO of Sacred Heart Health System said. “This only happened because of the community. We want to thank everyone who made a dream into a reality.” The Family Birth Place houses five spacious, private labor and delivery suites, 12 new private postpartum suites, two antepartum rooms, four triage rooms, a newborn nursery, an education room and a family waiting area. Lucas was impressed with the size of the FBP delivery suites. “The room was large, which was great because I had a lot of family with me during the birth,” Lucas said. “It’s very much about the baby as well as the family.” When asked how she made the decision to deliver at Sacred Heart, Lucas said, “I received a lot of recommendations on where to deliver. I’ve just always heard such great things about Sacred Heart, so it just made sense for me to deliver here. I know some of the nurses and have had friends deliver here. This was my first baby and also a high-risk pregnancy so it was kind of scary. Everyone has been really nice and consistent across the board— genuine.”
