When we in healthcare have a vision, often it is courage — a word derived from the French meaning “of heart” — that is required to bring that vision to life. Indeed, our healing ministry is rooted in the courage of the Daughters of Charity, whose vision 101 years ago was responsible for the first Sacred Heart Hospital. Today, we continue their legacy by ensuring that growth takes place where it is most needed, as with the expansion of Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast. Our President and CEO Susan Davis has exhibited great courage with her vision of the new Studer Family Children’s Hospital. This will ensure that the children of tomorrow, throughout our region, will have greater access to specialized health care designed with a child’s needs in mind. Drew Barefield A CHAMPION FOR OUR COMMUNITY

he miraculous Drew Barefield survived multiple traumatic injuries suffered in a boating accident after which he was hospitalized for 75 days and underwent 13 surgeries. Throughout, doctors and nurses were impressed by Drew’s persistent “can-do” attitude and the concern he expressed for others, despite what he was going through himself. He has a great outlook on life and hasn’t let his traumatic experience get him down. Drew is a happy and seemingly carefree child with a knack for making people laugh. For Drew, it was never a question of whether he’d walk and run again; he was determined to do both and pushed through the pain. He is an inspiration to others and draws upon his faith as a source of strength. “Since God saved me,” says Drew, “I know he has a purpose for me, and I can’t wait to find out what that purpose is.” Through laughter, prayer and play with Nerf toys, Drew formed lasting relationships with nurses, physicians and administrators at the hospital.

“It’s about paying it forward and raising money to be there for someone else’s child. People have poured into us, and we are grateful.” – TREY BAREFIELD “Every one of the nurses became family to us. The nurses weren’t just treating Drew. They were making sure we were being taken care of,” says Drew’s mother, Wendy. Drew, meanwhile, had a significant impact on his caregivers. “Drew became a blessing and inspiration to everyone at Sacred Heart and showed us that good things and miraculous things happen when we work together,” says Dr. Robert Patterson, medical director at The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart. Drew brought people together in ways that demonstrated what community truly means. First responders, caretakers, physicians, hospital personnel and other concerned persons united to provide Drew the life-saving care he needed. “God put people in place that were meant to be,” says Trey, Drew’s dad. Indeed, it took an entire community to save Drew’s life. While many stories would have ended after rehabilitation, Drew’s is just beginning. On May 5, 2016, about two years after his accident, Drew was celebrated as the 2016-2017 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Champion for Florida due to his remarkable medical story and his demonstrated passion for advocating on behalf of children’s hospitals. Drew wants to use this opportunity to tell his story and inspire other children to keep their spirits up. Now 14 years old, Drew’s generous heart and sincere gratitude will leave a legacy for the children and families in our communities for years to come. “It’s about paying it forward and raising money to be there for someone else’s child. Quint and Rishy Studer MAKING THE HOSPITAL A REALITY

acred Heart Health System hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking on May 3, 2016, for its new four-story children’s hospital, which will be named The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart in honor of Quint and Rishy Studer. “Sacred Heart is pleased to recognize a couple with passion for improving the health and education of children in our community, and a leader who has improved care to hospital patients across the country,” said Debbie Calder, chair of Sacred Heart Health System board of directors, in reference to Quint and Rishy Studer. The groundbreaking was about “what the Studers represent to our community, and what Quint represents to healthcare across our nation,” says Susan Davis, CEO of Sacred Heart Health System. Widely known and respected within the healthcare field as founder of the Studer Group, Quint Studer is a consultant who has worked with 900 hospitals during his 29-year career. Quint and his wife, Rishy, have been strong proponents of the development and betterment of our community. In his remarks, Quint Studer thanked Sacred Heart, a member of Ascension, for investing millions of dollars in Pensacola to care for children. “It shows that they are looking at children, at all children,” Quint said. “We’re very fortunate to have Ascension. We’re very fortunate to have Sacred Heart. How a community takes care of its less fortunate speaks to the values of a community.” In reference to the naming of the hospital, Quint said, “On behalf of Rishy, myself and Mallory, we are thrilled with this honor and we plan, with you, Susan, to help do the heavy lifting, believing that we need to continue to raise money to make this children’s hospital a reality.”

CMNH is a national not-for-profit grounded in its mission that every child deserves a chance to live better. While CMNH is a national organization, its impact is local. 100% of all proceeds raised by CMNH help better the lives of the thousands of children treated each year at The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart, your local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Panama City Beach Walmart HELPING EVERY CHILD LIVE BETTER

almart Store #3119 at Pier Park in Panama City Beach, through passionate associates and a generous community, is taking great strides to raise funds and awareness for The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart, your local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital (CMNH). Store manager Jennifer Ross enjoys being supportive of fundraising ventures that her associates and managers are passionate about. She personally believes in the cause because she has seen firsthand the wonderful work done at The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart. Jennifer’s son, Jackson, was born with one kidney and was treated by one of the few pediatric kidney specialists in the country who is housed at Sacred Heart in Pensacola. She and her husband were comforted by the fact Jackson received and continues to receive the best care possible. Stories like her own are what inspires Jennifer to manage up and, in turn, inspire her associates. “Our (fundraising) success is a testament to a few people really getting behind the cause and the work done at Sacred Heart. The rest of my associates and especially the community support them,” said Jennifer. She attributes most of their fundraising success to one man, who they lovingly refer to as “Mr. Paul.” Mr. Paul is a people greeter who sits with his decorated CMNH shopping cart at the market entrance of the store. It’s here that he greets customers using his own special approach, asking them a simple question: “Can you spare a dollar to help the children?” He enjoys listening to people when they share their personal experiences with The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart and other Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals throughout the nation. Mr. Paul attributes his success in raising funds to his faith. He prays daily for God to bless his work and fill his donation bowl. “Every day when I turn in the money from my bowl I say, ‘Isn’t God great?’ ” said Mr. Paul. The good words, actions and labor of love that Store #3119 has poured into Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is heartwarming, and as Mr. Paul shared, it “is storing up treasures in heaven.” They are helping to make miracles — one dollar placed in a bowl at a time.

THOUSANDS HAVE A BALL AT THE MALL The 21st Annual Cordova Mall Ball was held Jan. 23, 2016, and raised over $450,000. Net proceeds will go toward the construction of The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. Presented by Wendy’s, the event drew 2,400 guests who enjoyed six live bands, free food provided by 30 area restaurants, a silent auction, a French Market, several libation stations, formal photos and a mobile “fun photo” booth. This event is considered the largest Mardi Gras Ball in Northwest Florida. Over the past 21 years, Cordova Mall Ball has generated more than $4.5 million in proceeds benefitting The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart.

MULTI-FACETED EVENT BENEFITS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL The Preemie Cup, a fundraising “Day of Play on the Water,” was held Aug. 25 and 27, 2016, and raised more than $70,000. Net proceeds will support the construction of The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart in Pensacola. Presented by pediatric dentist Dr. Stu Bonnin, Wind Creek Hospitality and Pediatrix Medical Group, this event is made up of a fishing tournament, paddleboard race and sailing regatta — three activities with one big purpose. Over the past 16 years, the Preemie Cup has generated more than $477,000 in proceeds benefiting the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

CALL IN TO SUPPORT THE KIDS The 18th annual Radiothon was held March 2–4, 2016, and raised over $48,020. Net proceeds will support the construction of the new Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart in Pensacola. NASH FM 102.7 and its sister stations, Soft Rock 94.1, Magic 106.1, WCOA News Talk 1370 and Jet 100.7, joined together in broadcasting live at Cordova Mall and encouraged listeners to donate “for the kids.” Wind Creek Hospitality rallied additional support by sponsoring a generous community challenge as well as having its “Good to Go” truck visit The Children’s Hospital, where it provided lunch to associates in exchange for donations for the cause. In its 18 years, this event has generated more than $1.4 million in proceeds benefitting The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart.

GOLF ‘FORE’ A GREAT CAUSE The 15th Annual Charity Golf Classic benefitting Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast was held April 3–4, 2016, in Miramar Beach.The Spring Bash pre-party on Sunday featured fun, food, live music and a spirit of philanthropy and was held at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa. Golf professionals were paired with foursomes for Monday’s golf tournament, spots that are highly coveted. Play included 96 golfers and 24 pros.The golf event in its history has raised more than $3 million for various projects. This year’s tournament raised $229,584 in support of Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast’s emergency department expansion, part of the Second Century Campaign currently in progress.

Charles & Shirley Simpson TIME, TALENT AND GIFTS GROW HEALTHCARE ON THE EMERALD COAST

hirley and Charles Simpson never have lost sight of their modest beginnings in Tulsa, Oklahoma. While they would become highly successful entrepreneurs in the oil and gas industry, they have remained amazing models of servant leadership. Now retired, they radiate, wherever they go, their love for each other, their family and their causes they support. The couple’s first experience with the limits of local healthcare came when Shirley fell ill while on vacation. With no closer options available, the couple had to leave Northwest Florida to get Shirley the medical attention she needed. As frequent visitors and future residents of the area, the Simpsons became aware of the need for a community hospital. After learning of plans to build Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast (SHHEC) in Miramar Beach, the Simpson’s passion for the hospital began. With his big-picture view and his generous nature, Charles has been instrumental in navigating several successful transitions and additions at the hospital, including the current Second Century Campaign for the SHHEC expansion project. SHHEC, its wonderful doctors, nurses and the hospital’s steadfast leadership have touched the Simpsons. Through their donations and leadership, the Simpsons have played an integral part in moving the campaign forward. One of their goals is to inspire others to give and get more involved. Their trust in SHHEC is deep because they know that 100 percent of any donation goes directly for its intended purpose. Thus, the Simpsons remain steadfast in their commitment to the hospital. “This hospital is the greatest blessing we have on the Emerald Coast,” says Charles. Shirley adds, “When we don’t support this hospital, it will be because we are gone.”

Keeping the Legacy Alive THE KUGELMAN FAMILY FOUNDATION

t is only fitting that Jane Sable Kugelman be described as the matriarch behind the Kugelman Family Foundation. Her life revolves around her children and family, spending time with close friends — and giving to others. Today, she helps carry on the legacy of her late husband, Jack Kugelman, who took over his family’s foundation and devoted his efforts to giving back to community causes. Jane is chairwoman and president of the foundation. Her granddaughter, Jane Lauter, who serves on the Family Foundation board, says, “When we sit down at foundation meetings, she takes charge. She is Jack’s voice. She has very firm beliefs, and she makes sure we all understand. She will say, ‘This is what was important to your papa and me.’’’ She and Jack had four daughters during their marriage: Marcy Kugelman, Janet Livingston, Nancy McSweeney and Jackie Kugelman. Marcy and Janet were born at the original Sacred Heart Hospital on Twelfth Avenue. As a philanthropist, Jack Kugelman would often ask, “Where is the most need?” Jane says that he wanted to give to community organizations and efforts that would “help a vast array of people be better off,” and he always gave where kids were concerned. “Our foundation gifted The Children’s Hospital with their first children’s ambulance,” Jane notes. The Kugelman Family Foundation contributed significantly to the new Studer Family Children’s Hospital, which will begin construction in December 2016. “I want our family to be a part of the future growth of Sacred Heart,” Jane says. “If you’ve led a fulfilled life and you’re fortunate, you give to someone else. I think that’s what our family through the work of our foundation is about — growing things in our community and making a positive impact. This children’s hospital will have a positive impact on the lives of many children and their families across our region for many years to come.”

Their creative approaches have courageously, generously and effectively garnered support for the adults and children of the communities we serve, with a regional impact of $7 million.

SACRED HEART FOUNDATION’S SECOND CENTURY CAMPAIGN As co-chairs of Sacred Heart Foundation’s Second Century Campaign, Robert Emmanuel and Charles Simpson are paving the way for Sacred Heart’s next 100 years of service to communities across the Gulf Coast. Robert Emmanuel serves as chairman of the Sacred Heart Health System Board of Directors. Charles Simpson served as the chairman of Sacred Heart Foundation’s Board of Directors, as well as chairman of Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast Development Board.

St. Joe Community Foundation – Janet Greeno, Executive Director D.W. MCMILLAN FOUNDATION AND ST. JOE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Like the Daughters of Charity, the D.W. McMillan Foundation and the St. Joe Community Foundation are dedicated to the care of the poor and vulnerable. The D.W. McMillan Foundation was one of the first recorded donors to Sacred Heart, having consistently given since 1959, with funds specifically designated to support indigent care. The St. Joe Community Foundation has been Sacred Heart’s largest contributor over time, having donated land for both Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast and Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf when members of these medically underserved areas reached out to Sacred Heart asking for a community hospital. These committed foundations have an aggregate giving history of more than $13 million.

Barby Parks – Gerald and Vicki Adcox These individuals are recognized for their tireless dedication and commitment to serving our healthcare ministry, including the events and activities of the Sacred Heart Foundation throughout the year. Barby Parks volunteers 40 to 60 hours each week at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast, in addition to hours she spends helping to procure merchandise for the hospital’s two gift shops. Gerald and Vicki Adcox have devoted more than 15 years of service to Sacred Heart as donors, volunteers and committee members. Gerald was one of Sacred Heart Foundation’s longest serving board members, and Vicki is the 2017 Cordova Mall Ball Chair, in addition to volunteering in the office and for foundation events such as Preemie Cup and Riding for a Reason.

Dr. Thomas Sunnenberg Colleagues describe Dr. Sunnenberg as selfless with his patients and giving of his time to a variety of charitable causes. In 2006, Dr. Sunnenberg led the formation of Sacred Heart’s Medical Oncology Group, which he currently serves as medical director. The Medical Oncology Group has since grown to include 14 physicians with offices in Pensacola, Milton, Santa Rosa Beach and Andalusia. Dr. Sunnenberg was instrumental in the opening of the Sacred Heart Cancer Center in 2010 and in developing the vision of the Bayou Tower, which opened in 2014. He is praised for his personal and professional commitment to the region.

Cordova Mall Ball and Charity Golf Classic Driven by their compassion for others, volunteers at these two signature events selflessly give of their time, talent and treasure to serve the needs of our region. During their long history, these events have accounted for more than $6.7 million in cumulative impact! Not to mention, each year almost 250 volunteers dedicate more than 1,800 hours to our ministry through these two events.In 2015, Cordova Mall Ball celebrated its 20th anniversary benefiting The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart, and the Charity Golf Classic celebrated its 14th anniversary benefiting Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast.

Donna Pittman GIVING BACK

acred Heart has given much to Donna Pittman and her family during the past 90 years — gainful employment, the opportunity to enjoy meaningful work in service to the sick and the poor, and the chance to pursue dreams. Now, Donna is giving back. Retired in 1992 from her position as director of pharmacy at Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola (SHHP), Donna worked at both the old hospital on 12th Avenue and the current facility when it opened on Ninth Avenue in 1965. She maintains an interest in Sacred Heart and keeps in touch with friends in the pharmacy department. Donna’s great niece, Kellie Stephens, RN, is the fifth generation of Donna’s family to be employed at Sacred Heart. Recently, Donna decided to update her will and trust and chose to leave a gift to The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart. Carol Carlan, President of the Sacred Heart Foundation, says about meeting Donna, “Within a short few minutes, her love for Sacred Heart, her love for those she worked with and her passion for helping others all became apparent.”

“Sacred Heart is in my blood.” During her retirement, she has influenced generations of young students in her pharmacy classes at Virginia College. Now, her gift to Sacred Heart will allow The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart to touch the lives of future generations. Donna says she often pondered what her vocation was to be in life. What was God calling her to do? “I never really knew what my vocation was until I retired,” she says. “Then I realized that, all along, my vocation was Sacred Heart. I remember my grandmother used to say, ‘THE Pensacola Hospital.’ To me, Sacred Heart is THE place, too — the only hospital to me. Sacred Heart is in my blood.”

Investing in Our Community’s Future DAVID SANSING ADVANCES HOSPITAL’S MISSION

o walk into David Sansing’s office is to know immediately what is most important to him. Pictures of his parents; his wife, Lauren; son Webb; and daughter Julianne adorn the walls and decorate his desk. “Family is incredibly important,” David says. “I was taught at a young age that you may lose your friends, you may lose your money or job, but you are never going to lose your family. They are always going to be with you.” Today, David is vice president of the Sandy Sansing Automotive Group. While he works long hours, David spends as much time as possible with his wife and two young children. But he also lends his leadership abilities to Sacred Heart Hospital, where he and both of his kids were born. “There is no other organization or group that I can think of that positively affects more people,” he says. He is chairman of the Sacred Heart Hospital Advisory Council and has chaired the hospital’s board of directors. David is dedicated to raising funds for The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart because he believes that it will be a great asset for our community. It will provide the highest and most sophisticated level of specialized care for children along the Gulf Coast and eliminate the need for travel outside our region. He also participates in the Sansing Foundation, Inc., which gives generously to a variety of area causes, as well as the World

Health Organization. David explains, “When you’ve been blessed, you’re not blessed just to hold on to it. You have to help others, to benefit other people’s lives.” What does the future hold? He hopes, of course, to continue to be involved with Sacred Heart. “Having a hospital known for its quality and excellence and doing the right thing is great for our community,” says David. “It is such a positive driver for the future of Pensacola.”

The Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation supported the future Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast in Destin. This 10-bed expansion will be operated in conjunction with The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.
