Investing in the Future

“Haileybury is committed to investing in our facilities so that current and future pupils live and learn in a world-class setting. Whether in classrooms, Houses or co-curricular spaces, it is a strategic priority to ensure that our campus and wider estate create an environment which supports excellence in every aspect of school life.

In addition to routine maintenance, this year we have invested in our facilities as below:

1. Completed significant repairs in the roof of our Chapel and put in a beautiful new stained glass window

2. Fully refurbished our historic library

3. Undertaken substantial repairs of our cloisters

4. Built a new outdoor education centre

5. Placed irrigation on Terrace, our premier playing field

A large proportion of our buildings are listed and works are completed in conjunction with various heritage and historic buildings organisations”.

SciTech

The recently opened SciTech Centre at Haileybury ensures that our pupils not only learn science but have the opportunity to become scientists themselves.

The new buildings include science laboratories, state-of-the-art IT suites, robotics amenities, Design Technology facilities, a dedicated Research Centre and a VR room. There are also twenty interconnected teaching and seminar spaces and an outdoor courtyard.

The Research Centre is home to international and pioneering research, including the prestigious Stan-X project, which is run in partnership with scientists at Oxford and Stanford Universities. In addition, a space mission is planned to launch a CubeSat into space so that pupils can learn about spacecraft systems engineering, mission planning and orbital mechanics. Pupils benefit from learning from leading industry experts in this mission.

Outdoors Education

This year, Haileybury has greatly enhanced its Outdoor Activity Area, transforming it into a dynamic space for adventure, learning, and community. Sustainable design has been at the heart of the project, with wood from felled trees repurposed to create new fire pits,

bench seating and a parachute canopy for outdoor gatherings. A new canopy classroom and waterless composting toilets now enable year-round teaching and environmental education, while a newly built open wood barn and outdoor kitchen—complete with a pizza oven, grill

stations and raised decking—provide a versatile hub for group activities. A newly constructed boardwalk through Hailey Wood links these spaces, bringing the School’s commitment to outdoor learning and sustainability beautifully to life.

The Library

Throughout the day, the library buzzes with activity: Sixth Form pupils study during free periods, Middle School pupils visit to choose books and teachers bring classes for reading lessons and research. In the evenings, the library becomes a calm workspace for pupils in Years 11–13 completing prep and private study.

The space also supports a wide variety of initiatives, from the Lower School Humanities research project on Ancient Egypt to IB Extended Essays, Model United Nations meetings, and Community Action and Service community events such as knitting workshops.

With digital access through the SORA app, extensive archival connections and pupil-curated heritage displays in partnership with the school Archives, the library is a cornerstone of both Haileybury’s academic excellence and its living history.

Chapel

After some challenges caused by water ingress, the final phase in a three-year programme of restoration in the Chapel has been completed.

The works addressed the source of the water ingress, carefully removed damaged plaster and wooden lath and allowed the building to fully dry before the restoration phase began. This meticulous process involved a team of highly skilled heritage specialists, including stonemasons, lime plasterers and stained glass artisans. Notably, our lime plasterers’ previous project was the restoration of the Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben), highlighting the exceptional craftsmanship involved in this work.

From Easter to Summer 2024, restoration focused on the West Transept and lower Nave, followed by the East Transept and upper Nave from Easter to Summer 2025. Alongside these works, we also introduced a new state-of-the-art audio system, greatly enhancing the sound quality and visitor experience. Three newly commissioned stained glass windows were also installed in the Clergy Chancel, beautifully completing the circle of windows and adding a stunning visual feature to the restored space.

Cloisters

The restoration of the East Cloister roof was a key part of protecting and enhancing the Chapel. Following detailed structural surveys and careful architectural design, carried out in close consultation with the local authority conservation office, a full restoration of the roof was undertaken.

The project involved replacing deteriorated structural timbers with new, custom-made sections precisely crafted to replicate the originals, ensuring full respect for the Cloister’s listed status. Through collaboration with conservation experts, it was identified that the original roof would have been finished in lead.

The previous covering was therefore replaced with a new, beautifully hand-crafted lead roof that closely reflects the Cloister’s historic character and original design.

Haileybury’s Terrace pitch has undergone a major transformation this year with the installation of a state-of-the-art irrigation system featuring 32 pop-up sprinklers and a full surface renovation completed over the summer.

The upgrade ensures exceptional pitch quality, improved water efficiency and consistent playing conditions throughout the year, reinforcing Haileybury’s commitment to maintaining first-class sports facilities that support performance, sustainability and pupil wellbeing.
