Haileybury Rendall School is an independent co-educational School located in Darwin in the Northern Territory. Enrolment numbers during 2022 remained constant at around 940 students. The School includes: > an Early Learning Centre of around 44 students, > a Junior School with two classes at each level from Transition to Year 6, > a Middle School with an average cohort size of 110 students from Years 7–9, and > a Senior School that is growing in size of approximately 150 students from Years 10–12.

Haileybury Rendall School is proud of being recognised as a Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Education.

Approximately 15% of students at the School are from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds. In 2022 there were over 80 boarders living at the School. The majority of these students were Indigenous and come from remote

or very remote communities. The boarding population comprises approximately 10% of the school population, meaning that 90% of students are day students from the Darwin region.

Haileybury Rendall School is proud of its affiliation with Haileybury Melbourne where there are five different campuses and over 4,800 students. Haileybury also operates a campus in China. There are strong connections between staff and students from Darwin to Melbourne. Several staff in 2022 had been seconded to Darwin from Haileybury Melbourne. The Schools share a common curriculum which is partly why Haileybury Rendall School is the only Northern Territory School that runs the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) through Years 10–12.

Haileybury Rendall School supports the broad Haileybury aspiration of ‘being a great world school’ whilst having an immediate vision of being the best School in Northern Australia.

Principal’s introduction In 2022, Haileybury Rendall School (HRS) completed its fifth year of operation and made significant progress. Enrolments at HRS have continued to grow steadily with the School starting the year with 940 students including over 85 boarders.

This was a significant increase on the previous years’ enrolment. The growth in enrolments was predominantly in the Junior School with a third Year 6 stream for the first time, and in the Senior School as student numbers push through the School.

The key goals of the School are to further academic excellence, develop student wellbeing at all year levels, and staff development and opportunity remained a high priority. We continued to enhance our standing as a recognised Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Education. It was wonderful that 10 Indigenous students completed their Year 12 education at HRS which was a strong endorsement of our retention rates and contribution to ‘closing the gap’.

There were good VCE results and ATAR scores and this continued a trend of strong results across the last 3 years that have seen 16% of our students achieve ATARs over 95, 23% of our students achieve ATARs over 90, 34% of our students achieve ATARs over 85 and 42% of our students achieve ATARs over 80.

These results were a strong endorsement of the academic culture in the School, the work ethic of the students and the dedication and quality of our teachers.

Haileybury Rendall School continues to establish its reputation in Darwin as it seeks to be regarded as the best school in Northern Australia. The local community has endorsed our progress with a rapid increase in enrolments that supports our goals and aspirations. The School is determined to continue to develop, improve and provide a world-class education for students in and out of the classroom. At HRS, every student and every team member matters every day.

Mr Andrew McGregor A further growth in academic results was shown in ACER PAT testing and NAPLAN 2022 online testing. It was great to see an improvement in 17 out of 20 NAPLAN measures from 2021 to 2022. HRS was recognised as the top-performing NAPLAN primary school in the Northern Territory for the second consecutive year.

Our Indigenous students from remote communities showed steep academic growth in numeracy and literacy from Years 7–12 with some students completing over two years growth within the year in aspects of their learning.

Student body The students at Haileybury Rendall School embrace the School’s high expectations. The student body is made up of both day and boarding students.

Student numbers On Census Day, 5 August 2022, Haileybury Rendall School had an enrolment of 827 students (Transition to Year 12), of whom 367 were boys and 460 were girls. This enrolment included 122 Aboriginal students. Haileybury Rendall School also had Early Learning Centre enrolments of 44 for a total enrolment of 871.

Student attendance and retention Attendance Attendance is taken each period and electronically recorded. Parents of students who are to be absent are asked to ring reception before School. Parents of students who have not confirmed their child’s absence by recess are contacted

by SMS requesting information. In 2022, the attendance rate was 94.82%.

Retention 71.43% of students in Year 12 had attended the School since at least Year 9.

Vocational and trade training 5.2% of Years 10-12 boys and 2.2% of Years 10-12 girls were undertaking Vocational or Trade Training. A total of 3.9% were Year 12 students.

Five students completed a Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) qualification in 2022.

Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Haileybury Rendall School offers the VCAL in Years 10, 11 and 12. The students complete units in: > Literacy and Numeracy Skills > Work Related Skills > Industry Specific Skills > Personal Development Skills.

In 2022 the following was achieved: > 10 students completed the VCAL in Year 12 > 70% pass rate and all awarded the VCAL. The NAPLAN results in 2022 were outstanding. Most areas showed growth in almost all aspects from the 2021 results across all year levels. As shown above, the results were much higher than the Northern Territory averages in all areas. The Primary School was recognised as achieving the best NAPLAN results in the Northern Territory.

Haileybury Rendall School is committed to providing academic excellence through high quality teaching. The School sets high expectations in all aspects of education and the NAPLAN results are a testament to the leadership and direction of the School.
