GOLF

GREEN-SIDE SAND PLAY - Jay Garrick, PGA, Director of Golf The Set Up In order to hit a shot from the sand, a player must set up to the ball correctly. Taking what would be your normal golf grip, a great bunker player will always get into a well-balanced posture, with knees slightly bent, a nice tilt forward with the spine, and arms hanging straight down. During the set up the ball position would be right off of the inside of the front foot, with a slightly open stance. The club face would be square to the target line unless trying to hit an extra high lofted shot to the green, which would require a slightly open face at address. The Swing The swinging motion is a little different than your normal swing meaning that the initial take away must be abrupt and steep. This requires the hinging of the wrists to occur immediately. So we swing the arms back, hinge the wrist and blast the sand out of the bunker with great force…following through is a must out of the sand. The Divot To be a great bunker player you must take the correct divot. Allowing the club head to enter the sand behind the ball and come out of the sand in front of the ball is key. For hard and compact sand it is closer to ball (~ 1 in.), for fluffy sand it is further back behind the ball (~ 3 in.). Throw the sand out and the ball will come out!!

TENNIS

WORDS OF WISDOM from UNCLE TONI When Rafael Nadal started playing tennis, his uncle and coach, Toni gave him a three rules to follow and in the end created a great champion. 1. “If you ever throw a racket, we’re finished. They’re expensive, and when you throw a racket you don’t just disrespect the sport, you disrespect all the people who can’t afford equipment.” 2. “Losing is part of competing. You will lose. And when you lose, it’s not going to be my fault or the fault of your racket or the balls or the courts or the weather. It is your fault, and you will accept it. Too many people in this world make excuses for their problems. You take responsibility and try and do better next time. That’s all.” 3. “Have fun. When you stop enjoying this, it’s no good. You’ll find something else that gives you pleasure.”

THE FIRST KEY TO HITTING BETTER WIMBLEDON ROUND ROBIN Saturday, July 3 SHOTS Da Fus Kie of hitting a great shot is a solid and responsive ready position. A great ready position does one thing: it allows you to move in the quickest and most efficiently way possible. There are three elements of a great ready position:

The Wimbledon Round Robin will be held on Saturday, July 3 from 9 – 11 AM. Following the tennis, our traditional luncheon of strawberries and cream will be served. Please be sure to wear your best Wimbledon whites. Registration is on the Tennis Homepage.

1. Wide Base – The base should be wider than your shoulders. The wider your base, the lower your center of gravity. 2. Hands in front – The hands should be away from the body. Don’t make the mistake of putting your hand on your belly button. 3. Racquet head above your hands – The weight of the racquet is in the head; the racquet will be more maneuverable if the weight is above the base (your hands) and not below.

US OPEN ROUND ROBIN Saturday September 4

POWER VS. CONTROL Your strings can go a long way to improve your game. One of the most misunderstood concepts in tennis is the effect of string tension on your shots. The tighter you string your racquet, the more control you have over your shots. The looser the tension, the more power.

The Haig Point Tennis Center is pleased to announce the US Open Round Robin will be held on Saturday September 4 from 9:00 – 11:00. Very special door prizes and food will be offered. Registration is on the Tennis Homepage.

The theory behind tighter strings resulting in more control derives from several factors. The first element is string movement, which looser strings have more of. If a string moves more on impact, the resulting ball trajectories will be less predictable. Think of throwing a ball against a concrete wall (tight string bed) vs. throwing it against a trampoline (loose strings). The wall will have the more consistent response.

EQUESTRIAN

HORSES and HEAT Living in paradise comes with a price for both horses and humans during Summer months! As we move into the hottest months of the year on Daufuskie, it is extremely important that all who ride understand how heat affects horses and what are reasonable expectations of their performance at high temperatures. As a general rule, horses should not be ridden when the temperature is over 90 degrees. Heat index and humidity levels are also a factor to consider. If it’s only 85 degrees but the heat index is 95 and the humidity level over 75%, its too hot to ride in the sun! It’s the staff’s job to take into account all factors when asking a horse to work but here are some points we consider when making those decisions. These factors will affect when and how often we can reasonably ask our horses to work. Continued on the next page

3. How old is the horse and is he/she fit? Our older lesson or trail horses will not be able to be ridden as often during the week as the younger more energetic ones

4. How long is the ride? The maximum our horses can work during one session is an hour but they may be cut down to a half an hour during times of intense summer temps

Morning trail ride tailored to those interested in learning about the unique island environment

We appreciate everyone being understanding of what has to be considered when asking animals to perform in higher temperatures. Expect changes in lesson time duration as well as availability! If you are accustomed to taking three lessons a week, you may have to limit back to 1-2 weekly to accommodate heat restrictions as well as member demand.

NAUTICAL FACT: SPARTINAOOK A A coppery brown during the winter, this perennial grass sprouts vivid green new growth as spring approaches. Spartina alternaflora is one of the keystone elements of our saltmarsh environment and it plays a unique role in the preservation of this ecosystem. While spartina roots don’t necessarily grow very deep, a single plant’s root system will spread out 12 to 15 feet and interlock with surrounding plants. These root mats help stabilize the marsh, or pluff mud, protecting against erosion. Spartina stalks also break up wave energy before it reaches land, lessening the impact of storms. This feature contributes to Hilton Head’s status as a barrier island. These grasses, measuring 8 to 60 inches, also provide an important refuge for all kinds of wildlife. Wading birds, marsh wrens, clapper rails, mink and otter are among the critters seeking refuge here from predators, inclement weather and the curious eyes of humans. In the fall, the grass develops small white flowers along the upper stalk that develop into seed heads. As the leaves turn a golden brown, the seeds disperse. These seeds not only create new spartina plants, but are also an important food source for local and migratory birds. In the winter, when the grass dies back, the spartina forms what is called wrack. This wrack is pushed into the current by rising tides and new growth, and quickly begins to decompose. Wrack releases nutrients back into the ecosystem and eventually sinks to the bottom. This nourishes the pluff mud from which it grows. Each and every stage of life plays an essential role in the health of the saltmarsh. One of this plant’s most unique features: spartina grass requires freshwater to nourish its root systems. One might wonder how it acquires freshwater when we only find it growing in saltwater marshes. The plant actually draws saltwater up into its core and then “sweats out” the salt through special glands located at the base of its leaves — in essence distilling its own freshwater.

With its excellent survival skills and ability to protect our wildlife and our coastline, spartina alternaflora demonstrates all the properties of a warrior. It’s definitely worth a trip out into our saltmarshes to have an up-close encounter with this amazing plant. Courtesy of Anneliza Itkor, Outside Hilton Head

SUMMER FISHING TARPON, REDFISH, JACK CREVALLE, TRIPLETAIL, SHARKS, TROUT, MACKEREL Tarpon arrive in the sounds and backwater creeks that surround Daufuskie Island and are one the most exciting gamefish to catch due to their explosive runs and incredible leaping ability. Jack Crevalle can be sight fished on fly or spin and are pound-forpound one of the hardest fighting fish that swims in our inshore waters. Tailing Redfish on the high tide flats with spin and fly is at its peak during these months as well. Several species of Sharks are inshore, nearshore in the sounds and are a blast to catch on light tackle while targeting tarpon. Tripletail can be sight fished on the surface during the summer as well.

SUMMER MARKETING UPDATE

NEW WEBSITES COMING SOON Haig Point and its family of brands are all getting new websites in the coming months. This includes haigpoint.com, daufuskieislandferry.com, daufuskietrailrides.com and a new domain and website for Premier Properties by Haig Point. We are grateful for all the help our Marketing and Membership Committee has provided in analyzing market demands and assisting with development. As we roll out these new and improved websites you will see an incredible update to our brand image, with an expanded focus on multi-generational families. You will notice new taglines, imagery and copy. We are not resting on our laurels of the past year. Now, more than ever, we are committed to taking our sales and marketing efforts to the next level. NEW HAIG POINT MEMBER APP We are excited to announce that on June 7, 2021, we launched an upgraded version of our Club’s mobile app - powered by our web partner Clubessential. We have been hard at work preparing to improve your mobile experience while keeping personalization, ease of use, and security at the forefront. We think you are going to like what you see, and this is only the beginning. We plan to roll out more app updates in the near future making engaging in Club life as easy and convenient as possible. You can download the app by going to your device’s app store and downloading ClubEssential. You will be required to log in with your Club ID, Username, and Password. As a reminder, our Club ID is: haigpoint. If you do not know your Username and Password, you may reset it on the desktop website or contact lhunt@haigpoint.com
