s we say goodbye to 2021 I can’t help but reflect on some of our Club’s greatest assets – our employees. In a year dubbed a “Labor Pandemic” and “The Great Resignation,” I am more thankful than ever for the dedication, professionalism and commitment shown by all our staff. Their focus on quality customer service is completely responsible for our exceptional Member experience. There would be no Haig Point without them.

Our staff was so exceptional last year, we had TWO Employees of the Year, Stephanie Hodges and Jose Mastrache!

It was with a heavy heart that our family said farewell to Captain Raymond Morris this winter. Captain Ray served our Membership for over 30 years as the Senior Night Captain. In a service befitting an honored sailor, every boat in our navy escorted his final journey to rest in peace at sea.

RUNNING DOWN A DREAM

2022 marks 5 exciting years since Run 4 a Reason teamed up with Haig Point and created the Daufuskie Island Marathon

W

hat started as a small boat trip with 5 friends turned into a weekend many will never forget. It started in 2016 when Race Director, Dan Hernandez joined some friends to do an exploration run on this

quaint island. Touring the island on foot for 18 miles provided Dan with enough inspiration to develop a race. With his experience being the first race director to bring ultramarathons to Savannah, Georgia, it only made sense to have a 25k or 50k race. Dan and race coordinator, Jason Edenfield, quickly planned the race.

In January 2017, the race sold out its first year and proved to be a hit! Although successful, Dan knew this race could be so much more. Kerry Dulina joined the team as co-director the following year and the race was officially the “ Daufuskie Island Marathon and Ultra” and consisted of a half marathon, full marathon, and 39.3 mile ultra marathon.

The Daufuskie Island Marathon is the perfect “runcation”weekend. This all inclusive USATF certified race is favorite among the locals and across the US. The ability to qualify for races like Boston, Chicago, and New York only adds to the incentive of getting some island time! The weekend actually starts on Thursday, when packet pickup starts at Fleet Feet Savannah, then again on Friday at the Haig Point Embarkation. Daufuskie Island is a short 30-minute cruise aboard the private ferry from Hilton Head Island. This year to start off the weekend, Haig Point will be holding a Pre-Race Pasta Dinner. While you are carb-loading we will have Traci Falbo answering all your questions about training, family, and setting the world record for women in a 48-hour event.

On race day, runners arrive at the heart of Haig Point and get pumped up under the tent with DJ Jarian Rich and enjoy a homemade cinnamon roll and a cup of PERC coffee. LuAnn Lucier, our volunteer coordinator, will have our incredible volunteers in place to serve the runners' needs. While on the course runners take

This flat and fast course is nothing short of an incredible scenic tour. Runners pass by many points of interest including the Daufuskie Island History Museum. Here you'll find the bricks of all the overall winners for this race for the past 4 years. Runners will notice there aren't many vehicles on the island. Most islanders get around by golf carts or bicycles. The back end of the course through Haig Point takes runners on a picturesque tour of some beautiful homes. The best is saved for last when runners continue over a wooden bridge that opens up to breathtaking views of the ocean and Lowcountry wildlife.

Lunch will be served to all runners, along with adult beverages courtesy of Anheuser Busch. Local artist, Jacy Vergara, will be engraving medals as part of the Artisan Village with local artisans and vendors. Visit with Jennifer Smith for all your Daufuskie Marathon merchandise. Hang out and listen to the live bands and mingle with other like minded folks. Give big cheers for the overall and age award winners at the awards ceremony! We encourage all spectators to stay the length of the race to cheer all the runners in. Before you head home on Sunday, consider joining us for a “ Mimosas after the Marathon” party! NEW YEAR, NEW VIEW The Equestrian Department's Ride 'N Wines offer Members a unique experience

The Haig Point Equestrian Center offers lessons and trail rides, along with special events and custom rides throughout the year. One of the most popular and unique ways to experience all that the quickly expanding department has to offer, is joining our team on our monthly Ride 'N Wine! New Members and riders of all experience levels are encouraged to sign up. This is a great way to meet new people, and try something different. We ask that all attendees be at least 21 years old. Closed toed shoes and long pants are required.

Rides begin from the beautiful Sportsman’s Lodge at the Melrose Stables, where all riders will get checked-in and assigned horses. Our growing herd is made up of 12 beginner-friendly trail horses of various breeds. Riders will enjoy a relaxing 45-minute stroll through the maritime forest and alongside the Calibogue Sound, where they will experience the beauty of Daufuskie’s flora and fauna from horseback.

These special tours are led by Director of Equestrian, Claire Sistek, who has lived on Daufuskie for four years. Originally from Ligonier, Pennsylvania, Claire has been working in the equine industry for many years and attended Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, where she received a BA in Biology and was a member of the Bloomsburg

University Equestrian Team.

After the ride you will be able to enjoy complimentary charcuterie prepared by Chef Taylor, paired with wine of your choice. The Lodge itself is a warm and welcoming venue, with a lounge, pool table and gift shop. Guests are welcome to bring their own beverages if they would like something other than the provided wine. Although our horses are all beginner friendly and new riders are always encouraged to participate, we completely understand that riding just isn’t for everyone. If a member of your party would like to join only for the refreshment portion of the event that’s totally fine, we just ask that it is mentioned at the time of confirmation.

Ride 'N Wines are offered one Tuesday afternoon each month and cost $75 per person. Individual members are welcome to join, however please note that we do require at least three total participants for the ride to occur. Reservations are able to be made online on the Haig Point member calendar, and attendees will be contacted after signing up to confirm. 2022 dates may be viewed on page 17.

THE FLOP SHOT - Jay Garrick, PGA, Director of Golf The Set Up Grip – Slightly Weak (Right Handers – Right Hand more on top) (Left-Handers – Left hand on top) Aim – Stance Very open, Club Face open with much more loft added (60 Degree wedge is great for this shot!!)

Posture – Wide stance, bend at the knees, bend at the waist, arms hanging straight down The Swing The swing for a flop shot is much like a bunker shot meaning the angle of attack must be very abrupt. As the back swing starts the wrists must hinge immediately, typically this requires a full swing in order to get the ball up in the air. The swing must be aggressive to generate club head speed… also to help the ball get airborne with back spin. One of the unique features in the finish of the swing is the ability to hold the face angle off! In a regular golf swing the club face rotates over, where as in the flop shot the angle of the face remains at the sky. This shot requires a tremendous amount of practice and is only used when absolutely needed.

PICKLEBALL WINTER CLASSIC BENEFIT Friday, February 18th | 10 AM - 12 PM Our first Winter Pickleball Party will be a fundraiser for the Deep Well Project on Hilton Head. The event will feature Men’s and Ladies Doubles, as well as, Mixed Doubles. The entry fee will be a $25 minimum donation to the Deep Well Project. The party will also have a 50/50 raffle and great items for the silent auction.

The Deep Well Project was founded in 1973, digging wells to provide clean, safe water for the Hilton Head Island community. Since then, it has been the source of emergency assistance to the local community and is supported by individuals, businesses, religious institutions, foundations, clubs, schools and various other organizations.

NEW YEAR’S DAY ROUND ROBIN Everyone knows the best way to kick-off a new year is to play tennis. On Saturday, January 1st, the Haig Point Tennis Center will hold the first tennis event of the year with the fun starting at 10 AM. Registration is on the Tennis Center page on the Club’s website.

COURT MAINTENANCE During the month of January, the courts will be undergoing their annual topdressing and taping. This process will add two tons of material to each court. New lines and nets will also be added. Please observe the “Court Closed” signs to ensure the best tennis playing experience.

SUPER BOWL ROUND ROBIN Saturday, February 12th 10 AM - 12 PM We don’t know which teams will be playing in this year’s Super Bowl, but we know there will be great tennis played at the annual Super Bowl Round Robin. This team challenge will divide the players into the two super bowl teams; the team that wins the most points will be the winner. Following the tennis, we will enjoy great snacks and beverages. MARCH MADNESS ROUND ROBIN Saturday, March 5th 10 AM -12 PM The madness of March will come to the Haig Point Tennis Center as the Tennis Center will host our first March Madness Round Robin. The team event will pair players with their alma mater, teams will be formed based on conference and location.

Hannah Ehlinger Hi there, my name is Hannah Ehlinger and I grew up in the tiny town of Kimball, Minnesota. I am a recent graduate of William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri, where I received a degree in Equine General Studies with a concentration in media. While New Orleans is arguably the coolest city in the world, it is relatively lacking in equestrian opportunities, so I took a break from riding

Since graduating, I’ve worked a variety of equine jobs including sponsorship, events, and barn management. I recently relocated to Hilton Head with my two adorable cats to work at Haig Point!

In my free time, I love spending time at the beach, fishing and exploring everything the island has to offer. I’m excited to be working and living in a beautiful area, along with getting to know members and coworkers!

OYSTER SEASON in the SOUTH Nothing says the start of the winter season in the Lowcountry more than enjoying a bushel of local oysters with friends and family. Save this article as a guide to ensure you enjoy these delicious bivalves responsibly this winter season HARVESTING YOUR OWN OYSTERS - BEST PRACTICES So, you’re interested in harvesting your own oysters? Think they taste better knowing you, individually, hand-selected your own clusters? I don’t blame you. Here are a few key rules to know before you go!

1. Buy a saltwater fishing license – Money from these licenses goes back into restoring and conserving our marine resources.

2. Check the recreational shellfish map – Ensure you are harvesting in an area where it is allowed and safe.

3. Cull in place – Bring the proper equipment to break off any dead shells and smaller oysters from your clusters. They will provide habitat for future oysters to grow.

4. Know your limits – Two bushels of oysters in one day, limited to two calendar days per seven-day period. One bushel is equal to 8 gallons. There is a maximum possession of three personal limits per boat or vehicle.

RECYCLING YOUR OYSTER SHELL You’re done with your backyard oyster roast, and you’ve heard about the importance of the shell going back into our waterways to create habitat for future oysters to grow. So, you’re going to go to your closest waterway and dump the shell yourself, right? Wrong! This is illegal and can harm local oysters by spreading diseases.

While we think we may know where and how to place these oyster shells in our creeks, it’s best to leave that to the biologists.

BOATING + OUTDOOR NEWS Recycle your shell at one of the SCDNR oyster shell recycling locations. Biologists will quarantine your shell to prevent the spread of any diseases, and then the shell will be replanted on our shorelines to ensure the maximum benefit not only for our future oysters but for our shorelines as well.

WHAT IF I PREFER TO EAT MY OYSTERS AT A RESTAURANT? Be an informed consumer by asking your local restaurant if they recycle their oyster shells—applauding them if they do and encouraging them to do so if they don’t. You can also view a current list of participating restaurants on the website.

WHAT ELSE? Getting involved: Add your name to the list if you are interested in receiving the Conservation League’s communications related to marine resources.

WINTER FISHING REDFISH, BULL REDFISH, TROUT, BLACK DRUM, SHEEPS HEAD Winter is a peak time to target large schools of hungry Redfish on the low tide flats and creeks using spin or fly gear. Offshore/ nearshore fishing during the winter months can be epic for big Bull Redfish found 5 - 15 miles off of Daufuskie Island in big schools using artificial and flies. For the most part, over the upcoming months our fishing will consist of Redfish, Redfish and more Redfish as many of the other inshore species that we

normally see have either gone deep or migrated south. This is not such a bad thing considering that the Redfish action will be world class to say the least as you will primarily be sight casting in crystal clear water using light spinning tackle and fly fishing outfits. Moreover, the Reds will be schooled up in tight balls on the flats which makes for some very exciting fishing. These fish will be super sensitive to any disturbances in the water so a slow quiet approach and good bait presentation is extremely important. A super stealthy approach will be just as important as the terminal tackle that we use. In some cases you can lead the Redfish schools by better than 20 feet to ensure that the bait does not spook them as it hits the water. Furthermore, fly fishing can be especially effective with spooky Redfish because a properly presented fly will generally land softly on the water as most flies are much smaller and lighter that standard casting lures.

Nearshore, Wreck and Bottom Fishing One of the tastiest fish that swims through our waters is the Sheepshead. These black and white bait stealers will be staging up over most any hard structure off of the beach and will range in size from one to fifteen pounds. Sheepshead have very hard teeth plus their inner mouths and throats are lined with hard crushers used to scrape barnacles and crush crabs. Considering the armored mouths of these fish, sharp hooks are the key to putting them on the end of the line. Outside of Sheepshead the local wreck sites should also be holding a good number of Black Sea Bass, Flounder, Bluefish and the occasional Bull Redfish.

As you move out to the live bottom areas look to catch Black Sea Bass, Grouper, Snapper, Triggerfish, Porgies and even a few Cobia over the deeper spots during the winter months. Is it too cold to fish in the winter month? Not really; just look for calm clear days and bending a rod shouldn't be an issue!

How I Got Here

Meet Vincent Logan, Haig Point’s Assistant Food & Beverage Director Where did you grow up?

I was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, started my F&B career at numerous family owned restaurants at 13 years old. After high school I moved to Washington D.C. where I worked at the Mayflower Hotel. When I was 20 years old I moved to Maui, Hawaii and never returned to the US east coast until now.

Give us a brief background of your career My culinary back ground is classical French trained, my cuisine now is influenced by the robust culinary scenes such as California, Las Vegas, Hawaii, Grand Cayman Islands, Bahamas and Washington D.C. and my cooking philosophy is using fresh, local and seasonal ingredients to create wonderful dishes Introduce us to your family I am happily married for 17 years to Melissa Ann Logan who is the Executive Pastry Chef at the Montage at Palmetto Bluff and we have a 10 year old son, Malcolm Vincent Logan p a g e | 22

How did you get into F&B? My F&B career stared at the age of 13 at a seafood restaurant, busboy, dishwasher then fry cook. As I moved to grill station and then sautée station, the passion for cooking started to evolve.

Favorite thing about the Lowcountry so far?

What I love most about Lowcountry, is its beauty, I love to paint and draw, since I’ve moved here it has inspired me to start at it again. The sunsets, the lakes and the ocean all surrounded by this beautiful landscape of oak trees, pine trees and Spanish moss is phenomenal.

Favorite place to get dinner in Bluffton/Hilton Head?

One of my most favorite places to eat is Wasabi’s a Japanese fusion restaurant on Buckwalter in Bluffton Favorite beverage?

My favorite beverage in the mornings is an ice cold

Coke, in the evenings a good glass of wine or bourbon on the rocks Least favorite food?

My least favorite food is melons, all melons, honeydews, cantaloupe, watermelons Do you cook at home? What’s your favorite meal to prepare?

I love my veggies, I found that a good meal is always balanced with fresh vegetable, roasted, grilled, sautéed and even raw Favorite Holiday?

I would say my favorite holiday is Easter, not for the bunnies or egg hunts, it’s the fact that the son of our Lord God, rose from the grave after dying for all of our sins, all other holidays and Easter, is way too “commercial”
