Happenings from the Chief Dear Members and Guests,

This has certainly been a year like no other. I take great comfort and pride in Haig Point’s response to the COVID pandemic and in the way our community has come together in this difficult time. Haig Point has been a safe haven for many of our Members who have been able to enjoy extended stays working from and playing in our Island paradise. Once again, Haig Point sets the standard in Member experience and community. I hope you were able to enjoy our many summer activities and events. There is still time to register for the fall golf tournaments and events. Thank you to all the participants and sponsors of the Haig Point Foundation’s 2nd Annual Golf Tournament. The event was hugely successful. I wish to express special appreciation for our Gold Level Sponsor Chuck Hunter of Osprey Construction, and our Special Spirits Partner Anthony Chase of Daufuskie Island Distillery, for their continued support of the Foundation’s objectives.

This time of year brings a slower pace to our Island but also ushers in perfect outdoor temperatures. So get outside! Enjoy the beach, the water, the sand, and of course a game of golf or tennis! You might even meet one of our many new Members, Logan the Loggerhead. Be well, Doug

Meet Logan

HAIG POINT’S NEW MASCOT, LOGAN THE LOGGERHEAD

page | 6

FAL L HAPPENI NG S | HA IG P OIN T

Hi! My name is Logan. I am a Loggerhead Sea Turtle. Loggerhead Sea Turtles are the most abundant of all marine turtle species in US waters and happen to be the state reptile of South Carolina. I was born on Daufuskie Island and this is my favorite place in the entire world. I love the quiet, clean beaches and the abundance of Blue Crabs - my favorite food! As a sea turtle I can get easily confused between garbage and food. Plastic bags can look a lot like jellyfish! I love to teach kids to reduce-reuse-recycle to help keep all sea animals healthy and happy. Read on to learn more about fellow Loggerhead Sea Turtles like me. I look forward to meeting you at future Haig Point events - this turtle loves a party!

WHAT IS THE LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLE? The largest of all hard-shelled turtles, loggerheads are named for their massive heads and strong jaws (leatherbacks are bigger but have soft shells). Their reddish-brown shell, or carapace, is heart-shaped. Their front flippers propel them through the water like wings, and their hind feet stabilize and steer them. While adults males generally weigh about 250 pounds, loggerheads of more than a thousand pounds have been found.

Turtle Kisses + Starfishes - Logan

The Loggerhead is considered a “keystone species,” meaning that other animals in its ecosystem depend on it for survival. These turtles feed on invertebrates, whose shells pass through their digestive systems and, upon excretion, fall back to the bottom of the ocean for other animals to eat as a calcium source. Predators also rely on loggerhead hatchlings for food, while more than a hundred species of animals—including barnacles, crabs, and algae—live on their shells.

pag e | 7

HA I G P O I NT | FA L L H A P P EN I N GS

HABITAT These highly migratory turtles have an enormous range that encompasses all but the most frigid waters of the world’s oceans. They prefer coastal habitats in temperate and subtropical regions, though they often frequent inland water bodies and will travel hundreds of miles to reach them. REPRODUCTION Mature loggerhead females often return to the beach where they hatched to lay their own eggs, sometimes traveling thousands of miles. They’re able to do so with the help of Earth’s invisible magnetic field, which loggerheads use to navigate at sea. Each stretch of coastline has its own magnetic signature, and these turtles remember and use them as guides. Breeding occurs year-round but peaks in the summer months. Females may lay two to five clutches of up to 130 eggs in a season with different mates. The eggs incubate for 50-60 days, during which time the sex of the embryos is determined by the temperature in the nest; warmer temperatures produce females, cooler temperatures produce males DIET Loggerhead sea turtles are primarily carnivores, and their strong jaws allow them to crush conchs, bivalves, and horseshoe crabs. They also eat jellyfish, shrimp, sponges, fish, and sometimes even seaweed and sargassum. They are capable of diving for up to 20 minutes.

THREATS TO SURVIVAL Loggerheads are the most common of all the sea turtle species in the waters of the United States. But persistent population declines due to pollution, shrimp trawling, and development in their nesting areas, among other factors, have kept this wide-ranging seagoer listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act since 1978.Fisheries pose the greatest threat to the loggerhead turtle, which often gets caught accidentally in fishing gear like trawls and nets. Humans also have killed these turtles for their meat and skin for years, while ocean debris can injure or kill them. Climate change is also throwing off the ratio of male and female sea turtles. The temperature of the sand in which turtles are hatched determines their sex—and, as those temperatures rise, more female loggerheads are being born. Climate change is also raising sea levels and creating more extreme weather events, which also harm the turtle’s coastal habitat.

page | 8

FAL L HAPPENI NG S | HA IG P OIN T

CONSERVATION There are efforts underway around the world to save the loggerhead sea turtle. In the southeastern U.S., communities are working to protect the turtle’s beach habitats and nesting areas. Some communities have developed ordinances reducing the amount of artificial light allowed near nesting sites as it can disorient hatchlings making their way from the nest to the sea. Since 1987, the U.S. has required commercial fisheries to use turtle excluder devices that help turtles escape from fishing nets. When these devices are fitted into the neck of a trawl net, larger animals like turtles bounce off their grid-like bars while smaller animals like shrimp pass through. In spite of these protections, loggerhead sea turtle populations continue to decrease. Given the migratory nature of these animals, researchers say that long-term international cooperation is essential to their stability.

SEA TURTLES DIG THE DARK As the young begin to hatch, they cooperate in digging towards the surface, and emerge when the sand temperatures cool and daylight fades. They navigate to the ocean by following the downward slope of the beach and skylight reflected off the ocean’s surface. Landward lights that are brighter than this natural light disorient the hatchlings and cause them to move inland, where they often die from dehydration and exhaustion, drown in pools, are hit by cars, or are taken by predators. There are many very simple things we can do to promote the survival of Loggerheads: - If your building is visible from the beach, turn off your outside lights at 10 PM from May 1st - October 31st, the nesting and hatching season for Loggerheads. - If any of your interior lights are visible from the beach or cast light on the beach, close blinds or drapes at 10 PM or turn them off. - Never leave beach umbrellas, chairs, or any other beach accessories on the beach overnight. Nesting female turtles may get tangled in them, and for hatchlings they are often impassable and disorienting. - Fill in any holes so that sand is returned to its original state before you leave the beach for the day - Place all trash and recyclables in the appropriate receptacles. - Never disturb a sea turtle nest, a nesting sea turtle or a hatchling.

At 10.4 ounces strung, the Ultra 100L should appeal to a broad range of intermediate players, including the occasional league player or weekend warrior. All in all, with its combination of speed, precision, and power, this update to the Ultra 100L should enable a broad cross-section of improving players to play more aggressive tennis. Entry will be via the club website.

IT’S UPHILL One of the most common misconceptions in tennis is when you are serving, you should have the feeling of hitting down on the ball. The reality is you need to serve up and out – the feeling of serving up hill. When you are about to serve, you are looking at the opposite service line through the net; a straight line from your eyes to the service line will go through the net. If you were to stop your racquet at the point of contact and look through your strings, you would still be looking through the net.

THE ENCHANTING ECO TOUR Joining an Eco Tour with Haig Point’s Trail Program Manager, Claire Sistek, is an educational experience unlike any other. Not only do participants experience the island’s unique flora and fauna firsthand, but they do so on horseback giving each rider a unique perspective that cannot be replicated on a golf cart or even on foot. A graduate of Bloomsburg College in Pennsylvania with a Bachelors in Art in Natural History and Environmental Biology, Claire is a wealth of knowledge. During the ride, she shares her passion for the many different species of birds, palms, island pines, and epiphytes, just to name a few. Participants can expect to learn about our island’s most common plant and animal species but no two tours are alike. Each excursion brings encounters unique to the location, season and time of the tour itself.

Beginning in October, in addition to traversing the woodland ecosystems on horseback, Eco Tours can now extend to the beach allowing for an entirely new set of coastal creatures and plants to be discovered. Each tour can accommodate five riders, and all tours have sold out in the past. Reserve your spot today! Custom tours can be arranged upon request with a minimum of four riders, $100-$150 pp.
