Virtual Reality has arrived just in time for the winter season. We have three new virtual reality headsets for three age groups: 7-10; 10–13; and 13-up. Drop into the library and view an introductory five-minute video, then sign up for a longer session. Children under 13 will need their parent or guardian to sign a release form. The Queen Charlotte and Masset sessions have already been held.

Jumping balls of code, Batman!

Get a jump on the future with Sphero Bots. Right now, there are four of them on Haida Gwaii, and we will be getting two more. These educational toys are an excellent introduction to coding. By dragging coloured blocks of code around on the controlling device, little kids can “drive” the robot ball by moving buttons on iPad, iPhone or android devices, and bigger kids can program the balls to do things like run mazes, races, pop balloons or tell stories. More advanced kids can write the JavaScript code directly.

Move and Be Moved We are standing, sitting or lying down, usually with eyes closed.

Waiting to be moved; staying open to what is there, with no expectations for what should happen. Maybe it starts with a twitch of the pinky finger. Then maybe it spreads to stretching all five fingers straight out, and they then want to flap like a bird’s wing.

And then, maybe the whole arm wants to move in large circles above the head. Or not.

We just stay curious, accepting what wants to be expressed in that moment. This is the practice of Authentic Movement- simple, unprogrammed time in our bodies. We respond to impulses that come from the imagination, the unconscious, and our heart. In an Authentic Movement group or class, no one is giving instructions on how participants should move, or when. But there is always someone there in a supportive role - a witness - watching us with respect and acceptance.

Even a short time of moving authentically feels like a meditation that can leave you relaxed, refreshed, and grounded in your body in that delicious way you feel after a deep massage.

Authentic Movement started out many years ago as a creative and inspiring practice for dancers, singers and artists. Now the practice is used by people in all walks of life and at any physical fitness level. In August, thanks to the generous financial support of the Elizabeth Inkster Memorial Music and Arts Award, I attended an Authentic Movement training workshop on Salt Spring Island.

Participants included a sales rep, a therapist, a nurse, a school administrator, a university student, and others. What were we hoping to experience there? For some, it was a time out from an overly scheduled life. Others talked about wanting to get back into their body and the present moment but in an unstructured way.

Several people wanted to open up their creativity for art-making.

A common underlying theme that emerged over the weekend was how do we live a meaningful, creative life?

Psychologist Rollo May addressed this yearning in his book, “The Courage to Create.” He wrote, “If you don’t express your original ideas, if you don’t listen to your own Being, you will have betrayed yourself. Also, you will have betrayed your community in failing to make your contribution to the whole.” It sounds heavy, but somehow we know this to be true. May admits it takes courage, but a “...courage that requires a centeredness within our own being...We need to develop the capacity to listen with the body. It will mean valuing the body as a means of empathy with others and as an expression of the self as a thing of beauty...”.

So, are you curious to learn more about listening with the body?

Wouldn’t it be fun to experience that childlike, spontaneous, joyful way of being that you knew when you were young? If you answer yes to any of these questions, you may be ready to move and be moved!

lthough all recreational activities breed distinct cultures specific to them, it seems the sport of surfing is particularly so. Much like the common surfing catchphrase, “Surfing is life; the rest is details,” and “Out of water, I am nothing,” said by the father of modern surfing, Duke Kahanamoku, there is something deep and mystical about this energetic ocean activity.

catching lovely waves of its own. I went to the end of the road and, deep inside my mind, I heard heavenly music playing as I saw a gorgeous swell pushing in and peeling into the river with the mist, eagles and the forest. I still have the small note I wrote on the back of a receipt that I left on my dashboard with my name, family contact, and when I intended to return... in case I just drifted off to Alaska despite my best efforts. Instead, I surfed all alone on the beautiful waves into the sunset. And I never left.

“Masset doesn’t have a pool anymore.

But it has, in my mind, something better.

Crisp, clean, salt water washing over your face as the sun comes up. The surf community here is very family oriented...moms, dads, kids, random folks, and fires for those not surfing, and a very positive vibe.”

“Surfing was one of the reasons why I moved to Haida Gwaii. There’s not very many people here and the people that are here are very friendly. That’s the main appeal. It’s being in nature. For me, the thing I love the most, apart from the ride which is for sure one of the best parts, is paddling out in the waves that are really big and hard to get through. It’s a noisy and hectic experience. You get ice cream headaches and you get ripped around by the waves, but then, you finally make it through the breaking waves. It has a certain serene quality on the back side. You then have time to catch your breath, collect your thoughts and just enjoy being out past the mayhem of the breaking waves.

“I learned to surf as soon as I arrived on Haida Gwaii. My husband had bought me a suit and put me on a board before I got to do anything else on island. I was instantly hooked. The sea is so powerful and it’s beautiful to let yourself be part of its environment. I sometimes hear people complain about winter storms and weather, but that weather is creating the ultimate playing field. Surfing is different than other sports – you don’t have registration fees, time slots or need to coordinate with a team. Surfers have to be patient, ready and willing.

“When you’re out there, there are sometimes sea lions and grey whales…last spring we had a killer whale come through the lineup. A bunch of us saw it come steaming up the beach - going quite fast - it was running parallel to the shore and went right through where we all were. We saw an eagle take out a gull one day and have seen hail and snowstorms too.

“Tips for newcomers: You really must try it to know what it’s like. Go to North Beach Surf Shop in Masset or get a hold of Mike McQuade and arrange some lessons. Surfing can be quite dangerous, and there are a few things you need to know before you get in the water.”

“We try to make surfing and beach time a priority in the winter. It’s the place that brings out the best of all of us. I enjoy watching my husband in the water. He will paddle through the waves, get out way past the break and sit there, on his board staring out to sea. He is waiting for the perfect wave but also taking time to breathe it all in.

“My kids are learning how to balance play with fear; learning respect for the power of the ocean and, at the same time, have a healthy fear for it.”

swam competitively for eight, and started seriously surfing twenty years ago.

“Surfing on Haida Gwaii is different than many other places because we’re so remote with empty expansions of beaches and waves. Our waves are fickle, they’re not here every day, but when they are, they’re world class. On average we have around 100 high quality days. Surfing is an all-island thing, East Beach, Rennell Sound and North Beach. I feel totally blessed to be able to surf for 3 hours, be totally exhausted, get out of my suit and pick up 25 scallops off the beach. How awesome is that?”

I used to skateboard and snowboard a lot when I was younger, so it didn’t take long before my interests turned to the root of all board sports...surfing. Back then, all my summers through school were spent out at Duu Guusd (the west coast of Haida Gwaii) working at Rediscovery in T’aalang Stl’ang where we took the canoe and old kayak out riding waves whenever we had water time.

“To me, it was much more than catching waves, it was the experience of putting on this skin-like suit and being out in the ocean connecting with, and respecting, the greater forces that have always been, which our people have always talked about. Being filled with our different stories that tell about the many supernaturals and other beings created a whole different way of being on and in the water.

“Haidas have always been a water people; we’re island people with an extensive seafaring history. Certain types of our wonderfully crafted canoes had the stern end designed specifically for riding waves. So, wave riding, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t new to us. We have Xaad Kil (Haida language) terms for riding waves, reading set waves, the winds, the tides, the currents, weather watching; all knowledge that can be directly applied to surfing today.

“I came to understand that it is a continuation of our culture in many ways. Drawing upon Haida canoe design, I was inspired to carve and paint a cedar surfboard, which displays one of my clan crest figures in the bow and stern end of the board.

“The late Ts’inii Stephen Brown gave surfboards the Haida name Tluuwa Tl’apjuu, meaning Flat Canoe. I’m extremely stoked we have this as a ‘thing’ to further explore and experience on Haida Gwaii. It gets people back out on the land and in the water to rediscover places and continue building meaningful relationships with the different areas. I’m thrilled about the extensive work our people have been doing regard-

Access to nutritious food is one of the challenges of living in a remote community. Grocery shipments don’t always arrive on time, and healthy food like fresh fruits and vegetables can cost more than they do on the mainland. But more and more islanders are meeting this challenge by turning to locally-grown and harvested food. Thanks to the efforts of several organizations, deer, salmon, halibut, chanterelles and cranberries are a few of the delicious ingredients that are making their way onto lunch tables at islands schools and adult day programs, and in the packages distributed by north and south-end food banks.

The Gwaii Trust recognizes that food security – making sure everyone in our community has access to nutritious food – is a an important issue, with benefits to our health, culture and economy. In our Strategic Vision 2017-2022, we committed to working towards a healthy island, built on a foundation of healthy individuals supporting healthy communities. We are dedicated to helping to create an environment where

all islanders have adequate access to food, water, shelter, income, safety and recreation.

Enhance Your Life

by Stephany Pryce Food Combining for Improved Health As an adult, go with your natural body rhythms to feel better. As a child it is possible to be very calm, collected, and eliminate food sensitivities. Try food combining for a week with your family to see how you feel. The digestion is the key to overall health. Low energy, weight gain, poor skin, indigestion, allergies and ulcers, mostly stem from improper eating habits.

This new way of eating is difficult at first because most meals consist of proteins with carbohydrates, followed by sweets after the meal. Over time, the digestive tract creates a mucus coating to protect itself from the effects of improper food combining. This will slow down the absorption of nutrients, and therefore overeating occurs. When the body is working the way it is designed, the system will have feelings of clarity and excess energy and health issues will be eliminated.

It takes 6 hours to digest a meal of beef, veggies, potatoes, carbs and gravy. If properly combined, the digestion time is cut in half. Think of what happens to that meal in that time, and you have the answer as to why you feel unwell.

or diarrhea. Eventually heartburn, gas and stomach ulcers become the norm, but in reality, this is an indication that is something wrong. What happens to a baby after eating pureed protein, carrots, carbohydrates and fruit? Vomiting or spit up. This is the body’s way of rejecting the improperly combined meal. The baby will be happier and have no discomfort, bad sleeping patterns, allergies or digestive disorders if you change the way of eating. The worse possible combination is carbohydrates and fruits, or desserts combined with animal proteins.

This is the major cause of disease.

It is necessary to be stringent at first with the combinations until the digestive system improves. As the body detoxifies, food sensitivities should disappear as well as other ailments. Some food combinations and dairy can be reintroduced, and if it is not right, your body will tell you. Everything that a person is used to in their diet can be eaten, adjust accordingly to the Food Combination Chart. This may not apply to everyone as systems are unique. If this resonates with you, then give it a try. I recommend Dr. John Matsen’s “Eating Alive” book. It will be the best $20 ever spent.

Food Combination Chart • Do eat animal or seafood proteins (or nuts and seeds), with salads and non-starchy vegetables, and then give 4 hours before you eat anything else.

• Do not eat breads, carbs, sweets or fruits with animal or seafood proteins • Do eat vegetables with grains, rice or other carbohydrates, and then give 3 hours before eating anything else.

• Papaya, pineapple and kiwi are high enzyme fruits that will improve digestion.

• Use fats and oils sparingly.

• Eat alone or leave it alone: melons, oranges, and milk.

• Eat most of the sweeter fruits on their own, and all types of berries can be eaten together, but give 1 hour before eating anything else.

• Do not drink while actually eating as it washes away digestive juices

Built in 1916 and nestled beside a picturesque switchback of the tea-colored Tlell River sits the Richardson Ranch family homestead. Originally purchased by Eric Richardson back in 1919, seven different generations of Richardsons have worked hard over the last 98 years to maintain their family farm and serve the community.

Sitting around the kitchen table are longtime friends, Alice Richardson, Lois “Smitty” Akana, and Bill and Karen Ronnenkamp. Stories are plentiful, and smiles abound.

LONG-TIME FRIENDS… Alice Richardson, who recently turned 85, has five children, all born on Haida Gwaii, and is the grandmother of 10, nearly all born on-island, as well as the great-grandmother of four. Originally from Halkirk, Alberta, Alice has lived in Tlell longer than anyone presently residing there. In 1951, she met and married Doug Richardson. “I was never, ever going to marry a farmer because I did not like living on the farm,” affirms Alice. When Alice met Doug, he was in the logging business, but a year after they were married, his father, Francis, fell ill, and in February 1953 they came home to Tlell to take over the Richardson family business. And so, living back on a farm for Alice was just meant to be.

Smitty, aged 92 years very young, is a dear friend of the Richardson family. At Christmastime in 1952, she arrived in Queen Charlotte, and for two years worked as a nurse at the Queen Charlotte Hospital. “I was on duty the night Don [Dr. Don Richardson] was born. I’m his godmother,” Smitty proudly notes, “I always say, if I ever had a son, I would like him to be just like Don. He’s a fine gentleman rdson

that boy, well, ‘boy’, at sixty odd years!”

After her time at the QC Hospital, Smitty continued her nursing career in Vancouver for a couple of years and then moved and worked in Hawaii for eighteen more years.

She considers the Richardson family, and many other folks Smitty Akana in her on Haida Gwaii, to be nursing uniform, 19 50 her unrelated family, and thus has come for a visit nearly every summer. In fact, when her good friend, Sergius de Bucy of Queen Charlotte introduces her, he says, “This is Smitty Richardson.” Smitty and Alice have been pals for nearly 65 years.

AND LONG-TIME NEIGHBORS… Bill (84) and Karen (74) Ronnenkamp, who live about a potato gun’s shot away (literally - a Richardson Christmas morning tradition) on the other side of the river, have been neighbors and friends with the group at the kitchen table for many decades.

To all the Richardson kids, Bill is honorarily adopted, and known as Uncle Bill. “He’s also known as Sweet William,” Smitty giggles.

Bill, who was an RCMP Mountie for 20 years, was born in Stettler, Alberta. Talk about a small world. Halkirk, where Alice was born, is like Tlell is to Port Clements, only a short drive away…but they never knew each other back then.

Karen was born in Vancouver but grew up in Mount Sheer, a now abandoned mining town above the Britannia Mine Museum in Britannia Beach. Karen’s grandfather, who homesteaded up in the Tow Hill area back in the 1920’s, told her many stories

about the Charlottes/Haida Gwaii, and thus she was excited when she and Bill travelled to the area for the first time in the early 1970’s.

“We had a lovely visit,” Karen says, “and on the way back to Kitimat, where we lived at the time, we stopped into the RCMP office at Prince Rupert and they asked how we liked the Charlottes. We said we loved it and they said that was good because Bill was to be transferred there!" , aren ght) Denise, K

The cabin came completely furnished with gas lights, bunk beds, an oil stove and I painted it chocolate brown with orange trim. It looked like an A&W!”

AND SOME SLOWER PACE GOOD OL’ FUN… "Back in the 70’s, when Sergius de Bucy's Mom, Sybil was still alive,” Karen says with a grin, “she was in her 90's and still driving…" As couples often do, Bill continues telling the story, "If you saw Sybil coming, well… you just pulled the police car over." Now full-on laughing, Karen adds, “And let her go," and with a smile from ear to ear, Bill finishes, "She was following the white line down to the store…Oh, here comes Sybil, everybody knew - you pulled over."

Keeping the merriment going, Alice adds, "I think the best driver I knew was Bob Beitush, who owned property at the mouth of the Tlell River. He used to have one of those old Model A or T's and he would sell vegetables in Skidegate and he would go about 15 miles an hour…all the way to Charlotte.”

More topics are covered, such as the secrets of living a happy life and what they know now compared to when they were in their 20’s or 30’s: Bill: “It’s all small stuff.”

Alice: “I knew it all then.” (another hearty group guffaw) Smitty: “You live to 92, you don’t drink, you don’t smoke, eat lots of onions and listen to your Mother.”

Karen: “I never listened to my Mother.” (it’s a giggle session that goes on and on) VALUES LIVED BY: Bill: “Honesty.”

Karen: “Bill’s the most honest person I know, so yes, honesty.”

Alice: “If it’s got some money in it, I’ll do it.” (sly grin) Smitty: “A sense of humor. If you can’t laugh at yourself, then you’re in big trouble. And, you can’t please all the people, all the time.”

ON GETTING OLDER: Smitty: “I’m only 92, ask me when I get old.”

AND THEN THERE ARE THE GATHERINGS… In the early 80’s, a common get-together this group of friends helped coordinate was the Tlell Fall Fair Pit BBQ. 500 people attending was not uncommon. Sometimes, there were people 4 deep, lined up for as far as you could see, to enjoy the Alice and D feast. A pit was dug, and rocks were put at the oug Richard son (left and mid dle) with bottom of it. Covered in wet burlap, beef, pork, Smitty Aka na and her and at times turkeys, were then placed on the daughter K im in the 70 ’s rocks, roofing was put over them, then dirt, and then a big fire was built on top which stayed lit all day.

“Back then, we didn’t have people come and sell food at the fall fair,” Karen reports, “we did this big dinner ourselves. We made coleslaw right here in Alice’s kitchen. One year, we decided to do strawberry shortcake for 500 people, so I made all the cake and froze it. Well, it rained so hard that year, we ate this cake at every Farmers’ Institute gathering for the next three years.”

It was a huge undertaking done by a select group of volunteers.

Back in the day, if you happened to attend a Richardson family gathering, chances are you’d hear an accordion rendition of the song Whispering Hope, played earnestly by the late Doug Richardson. So often did Doug play this song, the mere mention of it today has Alice, his beloved wife of 64 years, smiling while rolling her eyes and shaking her head.

AND THE LASTING SUCCESS OF THESE BONDS OF FAMILY AND FRIENDSHIP… According to sixth generation Heidi Richardson (23), who for this whole time has been quietly enjoying her elders chat while sitting cross-legged and off to one side on a kitchen counter, “Family dinners are very important for the Richardson family. In fact, Alice still makes the work crew lunch every day except Mondays. We’re a big family and everybody, for the most part, gets along with everybody else.”

“Keep your mouth shut and your nose clean,” Alice adds, “I had in-laws when I came here, and we had our own lives, and you didn’t interfere with other people.” The consensus around the kitchen table: don’t stir the pot and respect each other’s privacy. “Mind your p’s and q’s as people used to say it,” Smitty confirms.

Be kind. Be grateful. Be polite.

Live with integrity. Work hard.

Potential for Housing This size of the proposed property also provides the possibility for subdividing the land and offering it for sale for residential development. This could help meet the increasing demand for housing.

HAIDA GWAII LOCAL FOODS PROJECT Local Food Preservation Passion Haida Gwaii-wide, folks have pantries and freezers that feature preserved, locally grown, gathered, hunted and fished food. Whether it’s a few jars of huckleberry jam or a winter or two’s store of canned, smoked, pickled, frozen, fermented and/or dried goods, their reasons for food preservation are common and many. To name a few: • Frugality: most of the garden’s bounty and every edible morsel of the hunt or fish is saved and savored.

• Nourishment: capturing fresh ingredients at their harvesting peak ensures high quality nutrition and flavor.

• Full-disclosure: usually with homegrown or harvested food, there are no secret, hard to understand or unwanted ingredients.

• Self-reliance: when the power goes out or the ferry doesn’t make a crossing or two, having stores of food equates a sense of security and peace of mind.

• Paying it Forward: sharing food with family, friends and neighbors nourishes our human connections.

While food preservation drudgery is a common burden reported by many, for most, it is good, wholesome fun. For some, the act of preserving food is healing and even spiritual.

It’s been a busy food preparation year for Port Clements’ Christine Lowrie. Her pantry’s bounty includes canned crab, coho, sockeye and spring salmon, as well as huckleberry Christine Lowrie’s pantry jam, blackberry jam, peaches, peach chutney (made with peaches from Joe’s fruit truck), homemade BBQ sauce, tomato sauce, green tomato relish, salal berry jam, apple sauce, apple pie filling, baked beans and even a blackberry liquor.

Recently, on an exquisite fall day, I had the pleasure of chatting with locals, Jennifer Pigeon and Greg Morris. Sitting on their sun-drenched porch, I was impressed to learn that 65-75% of all the food they eat they grow, harvest or hunt themselves. “It’s a lot of hard work,” Greg shares, “but life is never boring.” Jennifer adds, “It’s more rewarding than it is hard.” Greg goes on to describe that by eating food you produce yourself, you are intimate with it. “The critical mass of life force,” Greg says, “depends on getting intimate with our food.” Greg is an industrious hunter and thus they are wellstocked with venison sausage, jerky, smoked shanks, ground, roasts, ribs, steaks, stuffed backstrap, heart, liver pâté and bone broth. Besides a good supply of frozen food, Jennifer and Greg also preserve by canning, drying, dehydrating, brining and smoking. Awe-inspiring self-sufficient living indeed.

Another avid and talented local food preserver is Skidegate’s Kim Goetzinger. From butter clams that are dug, dried, smoked and then canned in oil or broth to her delectable November 2017

candied salmon, Kim’s passion for local food is both eloquent and affective. This year, from a plum tree in her yard, Kim decided to make a tasty treat: Salted Plum Leather. Cooked with sugar, salt and spices, the plums are then spread out on a pan, dried, cut into strips and dusted with salt or sugar. “They are to die for,” Kim reports. Spending many hours gathering and processing edible treasures from the sea is also one of her joyous endeavors. “Seaweed is my heaven,” Kim beams, “and the ocean, my sanctuary.”

For Marylynn Hunt of Tlell’s St. Mary’s Spring Estate, it is just another day for her to can three, twenty-six-pound boxes of Island Joe tomatoes. For this article, she shared a food safety story about preserving pumpkins. “Pumpkins are perfect for preserving – to put in things like soups and pies. If you have a fall abundance of pumpkins and you don’t want to peel them every time you feel like throwing a pie in the oven, you can peel, cut up, cook until soft and jar up the pumpkin and then process in a pressure canner for 110 minutes. With pumpkin being a low acid food, you can’t just process it in a water bath canner like you would salsa. That would be an invitation for botulism! As a young person, I almost poisoned my whole family because I didn’t understand how serious the difference is between canning low and high acid foods. Luckily, there was a house fire and all that pumpkin that I only processed for 15 minutes in a water bath canner got burnt up before we ate any of it! Safe canning everyone!”

Of course, this is just a snippet of the many amazing things the people of Haida Gwaii do with local food, and I say, kudos to you all. May we all work towards living simply, laughing often and eating well!
