Around this time, 150 years ago, the British North American Act 1867 (now the Constitution Act 1982) was enacted by the Parliament of the United Kingdom and the Parliament of Canada. Laws defined, for the most part, by people serving a young King from another world; laws that had little to no regard for the people who had lived on this land for countless generations. And so, this Canada Day, how can we celebrate being Canadian, together with grace?

Holding space: each of us has a unique life experience worthy of compassion. Everyone, deep down, wants and deserves to feel safe, heard and above all, appreciated.

Listen to each other: with the intent to understand. This means not formulating our answers while the other person is talking. (Easier said than done but profound when applied.)

Grow and learn: indeed, it is often what we think we know that keeps us from learning. Astronomer, cosmologist, astrophysicist, astrobiologist and author Carl Sagan’s said it well: “It is good to have an open mind, but not so open that your brain falls out.” Learning how to treat each other equitably is a worthwhile goal.

Eagle in the Woodshed

A little while ago, while driving from Masset out to the beach, my partner spotted an eagle close to the side of the road.

We turned around to have a closer look, initially thinking it was eating a deer. Upon closer inspection we could see its left wing drooping, a sign that it was hurt. I called the Conservation Office and they directed me to the folks at the Prince Rupert Wildlife Rehab Shelter. The shelter is run by a kind couple who have been caring for injured beings for 28 years. First though... we had to go and get the eagle!

Taking a tote with a lid, along with a blanket and gloves, we went back to the spot and, sure enough, it was still there, wet and bedraggled. After a brief and slow chase through the mossy, muddy forest, the bird, cornered and on its back, let out a loud hiss from its massive yellow beak, sounding like one of Khaleesi’s dragons. We quickly covered it with the blanket. It was obvious from our chase that the eagle’s wing was busted at the elbow. Talk about a big bird! With its tail sticking out, the large tote now seemed almost too small. Thankfully, we had a larger cage at home from taking care of a raven with a broken wing last year.

Being a Friday, we had to wait until Monday for the Inland Air float plane to fly it over to Rupert. We sheltered the eagle in our woodshed and during the weekend it ate salmon, drank water, and dried its feathers. I built a wooden crate for it to travel in and we put it on the plane Monday afternoon, along with our kind thoughts and blessings for a full recovery. I am reminded of Kyo Maclear’s words from her book Birds Art Life, “I used to think that freedom was a simple matter of release, a door to be opened, the inside let out like a caged bird or a wish made true.” Geshe Kelsang Gyatso writes that, “Our meditation should not be like the flight of a small bird, which never stops flapping its wings and is always changing direction, but like the flight of an eagle, which soars gently with only occasional adjustments to its wings.”

We CARE

Providing Rural Emergency Medical Care It’s three in the morning, and raining. A car crashed into a hydro pole and paramedics transport a seriously injured adult into the Emergency Department. The doctor and nurse leap into action; IV’s are started, the heart monitor is attached, a quick head to toe assessment is performed, medications given and blood tests done. It’s touch and go if this patient will need a ventilator to help with breathing. In any case, his injuries require his transfer to a larger hospital, and preparations are made.

This was one of the many training scenarios twenty four Haida Gwaii doctors, nurses and paramedics faced in a recent weekend training course at the new Haida Gwaii Hospital in Queen Charlotte. The CARE (Comprehensive Approaches to Rural Emergencies) Course provided interactive hands-on learning in a fun and supportive environment. Health care providers from Masset, Queen Charlotte, Port Clements and Sandspit reviewed medical, trauma and obstetric emergency management.

“Working in a rural site, there are many kinds of emergencies that we may not see often, yet we still need to be prepared to deal with them, should they happen”, said Lana Hooley, Registered Nurse in Queen Charlotte. “The CARE course did a great job preparing us for such events, especially as we worked the scenarios together as a team and not in our separate disciplines”.

So how can we, the community support our health care providers? “Love them and be supportive and understanding of the difficult work they do. Value their commitment to the community and let them feel that”, advises Jel and Rebecca.

And there is more to do, they say, on an individual level.

“Everyone should train in CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) and start it immediately if someone has a cardiac arrest. And push for AED’s (automatic external defibrillators) to be available in community locations”.

Finally, Jel and Rebecca praised the Haida Gwaii doctors, nurses and paramedics for their expertise and caring for each other and their patients. “The CARE Course teaching faculty were very impressed and would be very happy to be looked after by such a great team”.

Dr. Caroline Walker in Masset agrees. “We all felt our confidence build during the weekend in making team-based decisions and coordinating management. Shared education and simulation is vital for having a common approach and minimizing panic when the minutes count.”

Dr. Jel Coward and Rebecca Lindley RN are the CoDirectors of The CARE Course. They live and work in a small rural community and deliver this training in many northern BC communities. They know first-hand, the challenges and benefits of providing medical care to those you know and live with. “In a small community, it’s a blessing to work here, but it also puts extra pressure on health care providers to deliver care. They have to deal with

Moon Over Naikoon Haida Gwaii’s favourite mobile bakery, Moon Over Naikoon, is back open for the summer season. Be sure to stop in for a muffin or coffee on your next trip out to North Beach, but make sure you don’t zip right past it. The bus is located in a semi-hidden nook about 8km past Masset Grocery. Although it can be difficult to spot, that only adds to beauty of this hidden gem.

Jennifer Rice The Haida Gwaii Trader team would like to formally congratulate Jennifer Rice on her re-election as the region’s MLA. Rice has represented Haida Gwaii well during her time as MLA and we are more than confident that she will continue to do so. Reading on the Rock Reading for Reconciliation 2017 is Canada’s 150th anniversary, but it is also a year of reconciliation. The Vancouver Island Regional library has put together a reading list that emphasizes the history of residential schools in Canada. We hope to encourage our customers to read a book/books from this list and raise awareness about this period of our history. We also want to highlight the work of Indigenous authors during this time.

Customers can come into the branch to pick up a hard copy of the Read for Reconciliation List or download one online from virl.bc.ca/rfr. We are encouraging everyone to share what they are reading on social media using #Read4Reconciliation.

From the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: “For over 100 years, Aboriginal children were removed from their families and sent to insititutions called residential schools. The government-funded, church-run schools were located across Canada and established with the purpose to eliminate parental involvement in the spiritual, cultural and intellectual development of Aboriginal children. The last residential schools closed in the mid-1990s.

During this chapter in Canadian history, more than 150,000 First Nations, Metis and Inuit children were forced to attend these schools, some of which were hundreds of miles from their home. The cumulative impact of residential schools is a legacy of unresolved trauma passed from generation to generation and has had a profound effect on the relationship between Aboriginal peoples and other Canadians.

Collective efforts from all peoples are necessary to revitalize the relationship between Aboriginal peoples and Canadian society – reconciliation is the goal. It is a goal that will take the commitment of multiple generations but when it is achieved, when we have reconciliation – it will make for a better, stronger Canada.”

Continuing Medical Education in the Boonies

The Black Oyster Catcher

Black Oyster Catchers are one of two species of Oyster Catcher, and can be found all around the world. They are shore birds that feed in a small section of space in the intertidal zone. If you see lots of Oyster Catchers on the beach on Haida Gwaii, that is a sign of a healthy intertidal zone.

Some “Fun Facts” about the orange billed birds: they have a very long life span, with some living up to around thirty years; with a keen eye for detail, you can differentiate males and females by the spots on their eyeballs; and lastly, the brave souls often scare eagles out of their nests by dive bombing them!

At Your Service: Richard Clarmont

18 Years of Food Service Excellence on Haida Gwaii At the end of this month, after a four year term as Branch Manager of the Delmas Co-op, Gwaii Branch in Skidegate and then a fourteen year tenure as the General Manager of the Haida Gwaii Consumers Co-operative Association, Richard Clarmont will be retiring.

Changing the name of the HG Co-op was just one of many forward-moving projects that Richard helped realize.

“Recognizing that the size of the trading area of Delmas Co-op included all of Haida Gwaii,” Richard states, “it was crucial to look at the changing of our name to ensure all island members were recognized.”

Under Richard’s tenure, the Gwaii/Skidegate operation was turned into a financial contributor to the Co-op Ass o c i at i on … me an i ng more dividends to all of its valued membership; more money back into the pockets of hard working folks like you and I.

“I am very proud of my current management team that consists of all island residents and the successes they have realized…which make me look good!” admits Clarmont. “None of the successes that our Co-op has enjoyed can be attributed to the General Manager without the hard work by our employees and management and for this I will be eternally grateful.”

“I have had the opportunity to work with some of the most talented and hardworking individuals,” Richard beams, “and I have watched their careers over many years with many of them being married, having their children and grandchildren.”

One of Richard’s crowning glories is the mountain of preparations and groundwork he has done for the new Skidegate Store replacement project. On May 24, 2017 it was announced that the new 16,000 square foot food store project was approved by the Board of Directors following membership meetings in Sandspit, Skidegate and Masset with 83% of members in support. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2017!

In 2007, Richard oversaw the construction and opening of the new Masset Food Store, and through his tireless and talented money management skills he ensured the mortgage for this store was paid off two years earlier than planned – saving thousands of dollars Although it is known that Richard’s favorite in interest costs. Accomplishments abound pastime is fishing in the beautiful outdoors, - he also shepherded community projects such as the ever-popular annual Christmas Tree Lighting successful business management comes in a strong second in things he is darn good at. WHALE SEASON Why the Whales come to Haida Gwaii in the spring, and why there were so many this year

Story by Pete Moore Photos by Jags Brown The time between spring and summer is a beautiful time on Haida Gwaii. Flowers start pushing their way up, the salmon berries begin to form as their bushes grow more and more lush, and the days get brighter and longer. But for another yearly indicator that it’s “that time of year again,” we turn to the water, as everyone’s favourite aquatic mammals make their return.

During the month of May, it seems everybody’s Facebook feed was filled with either posts saying something along the lines of “Whales outside of ______!” or pictures by local photographers of whales splashing, spraying or feeding outside of Jags’ coffee shop. Indeed, this spring was certainly defined by the abundance of whales in the water.

Although there are around 15 different species of whales that appear in Haida Gwaii waters, the ones that you see up close

around this time of year are either North East Pacific Gray whales or Humpback whales – the reason being that both are here to feed. “The Humpbacks are here longer and the Gray whales are just in transit heading further up,” explains Dr. Norm Sloan. Dr. Sloan has been a practicing Marine Biologist on Haida Gwaii for 20 years and was the Marine Ecologist for Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site for 17 of those years. He was also previously part of a study on the marine mammals of Haida Gwaii.

“Both are on a mission to fatten up, because when they return to warmer waters to breed and socialize they stop eating,” he explains. “They are on a food binge when they are here.”

Both Humpbacks, who spend their winters in Hawaii, and Grays, who spend their winters in Mexico and their summers in the Bering Sea, are baleen whales, meaning they filter feed. The difference between the two is that Humpbacks are

shallow water feeders and Grays are bottom feeders. Despite the difference, both cases account for why we see them in so close in the inlet during the spring, but the bottom feeder Gray whales are the ones we see in what seems like impossibly shallow water.

“With the occurrence of Gray Whales, who are more in transit than the Humpbacks, there seems to be more variability between years on whether you see lots or not... so if people are seeing more, I believe it,” explains Dr. Sloan. The reasoning behind this is something that is difficult to confirm, but Dr. Sloan has a few ideas.

The first is that this is just part of somewhat of a biannual cycle.

“It seems that the whale biologists think that the mainland coast is the most commonly used route north for the Gray whales, rather than Haida Gwaii,” explains Dr. Sloan, going on to further explain that because of this, every few years we might see more whales choose this route.

Another idea is what we are seeing now is part of a larger trend that has been decades in the making. “Both of these whales are

now present in pretty large numbers throughout their range.

Their populations are restored largely to pre-whaling levels. So they are, both of them, a success story in restoration,” says Dr. Sloan. This is definitely something that has been noticed with Humpbacks: “Over the last decade, we’ve definitely seen more Humpbacks throughout eastern Haida Gwaii, in the South Moresby area,” he says.

Although the populations of the Gray and Humpback whales are at healthy levels, Dr. Sloan notes that this is not the case with all species. The North Pacific Right whale and the Blue whale are just two species that remain critically endangered.

Whales were hunted until 1968, and Haida Gwaii had 2 whaling stations (one in Rose Harbour and one in Naden Harbour) that operated into the 40s.

Although the specific reason for the influx of whales this year is hard to pin down, it is definitely a showcase of the healthy populations of Gray and Humpback whales, something that hopefully other species can reach in the future.

National Geographic Docks in Queen Charlotte A big expedition ship with “NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC� written across its hull made its way through Queen Charlotte earlier in May. The ship was one of the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic boats that starts in Seattle and makes its way up the coast to Alaska. These ships go on expeditions all around the world, and are part of a partnership between Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic to combine tourism with natural history and science. On this particular ship, there was about 90 passengers, about 60 of which were guests; the remaining 30 were crew, biologists, scientists, etc.

The ship was stopped in Queen Charlotte after having visited Ninstints and surrounding area before heading North to stop again in Masset. One aspect that separates these expeditions is that they bring on local knowledge holders to further enrich the experience. Elsie StewartBurton was on this last trip.

Friday Night Softball A Haida Gwaii Radio Society update from a fledgling reporter

As days on Haida Gwaii get longer and summer approaches, the Haida Gwaii Radio Society continues to bring Haida Gwaii voices to anyone with an internet connection who wants to listen, drawing in listeners from as close as next door and as far away as a different continent.

At the forefront of our current live broadcasts, and heating up our schedule for the upcoming weeks, is the Haida Gwaii Softball League’s 2017 season. With the support of league commissioner Cairns Ives, we’ve organised a Friday night livestream that has really taken off. Every week, an array of volunteer commentators join us in the Al Vandal broadcast booth, named after player, coach, and longtime supporter of Haida Gwaii Softball Al Vandal. Commentators have brought the games to life for listeners across Haida Gwaii, the country, and even the world, as we’ve seen listeners tune in from Antarctica and China, as well as other distant places – this, we are realizing, is one of the beautiful things about broadcasting online. A softball game on the “radio” is only as good as the commentators make it, and we’ve had an amazing team of hosts.

Feedback from the Friday show has been consistently positive. Perhaps the appeal lies in the excitement of live sports, hearing familiar names over the airwaves, or the

commentators’ witty critique as they call plays from players they know well. We’re looking forward to livestreaming the annual Hospital Day softball tournament as part of our broadcast of the event on June 17th! If you’re now wondering how to tune in, visit haidagwaiiradio.org for our schedule.

Aside from softball, a few shows have been holding down the weekly schedule over the last few months. Thursday’s Erratic Static and Sunday’s D.U.I. are both music-centered programs, with occasional additions. More recently, we’ve had Haida Gwaii Trader writer Pete Moore join the roster with HGRS’ first talk show, Talk of the Town, and Hexy Bexy hosting a show drawing from the depths of her musical library.

Though these shows and the dedicated volunteers who run them every week constitute the backbone of our programming, we have had many exciting opportunities for live broadcasting events over the past few months, including CoAST and CHN’s Enbridge Victory Celebration and Haida Gwaii Coffeehouse’s diverse monthly performances.

Our weekly shows, as well as the addition of community event broadcasts and special projects are slowly bringing us toward our goal of submitting a CRTC application which will lead to an (eventual) broadcast license and FM transmission frequency.

Now Shore to Shore

Bountiful green spaces are indeed high on the list of the rewards of living, working and playing on Haida Gwaii.

Visitors from all over the world come to this region and marvel at our sparsely populated, nature-rich archipelagos.

Our green spaces not only bring so many people moments of awe, peace, contemplation and joy, they also enrich our local economy through tourism and civic improvements.

Green space enhancements are especially walk-worthy in Port Clements these days with the nearly completed phase 3 of their community trail system. Funded by both the Gwaii Trust’s Major Contributions Program and the Province of BC Gas Tax Fund, what started as an idea back in the late 1990’s has evolved to become a leisurely, easy to walk greenway that will now take you from one shore to another.

At one end, the trail system starts at the stunning Yakoun River Estuary Bird Tower and soon moseys past the Sunset Park Campground. For 2 kilometers, the Sunset Park Trail then continues along with forest covered seawalk paths that cross over several wooden bridges. The route then traverses the west end of Bayview Drive and meanders up and alongside the Port Clements Community Park and then winds back down through a lovely section of forest where it meets up with the east side of Bayview Drive - across the street from the Port Clements Museum.

Here is where a brilliant thing happened. With monies awarded from the Canada 150 Fund, the PC Museum Board thought it made perfect sense to continue the community trail across from Bayview Drive, down through the forest and along a section of the Stewart Bay waterfront. And so it is.

With the help of local companies like C & C Beachy Contracting Ltd., this has been a community unity project, through and through.

The completion of phase 3 of the trail system is set for the end of this month. The next time you are in the mood for a rejuvenating walk, it is well worth checking out!

HAIDA GWAII LOCAL For the love of Food and Community

Submitted by Sarah Stevenson, Jenn Dysart, Shelly Crack & Kiku Dhanwant Venison and halibut burgers, Jam with fry bread, venison stew and salad bars, are just a few of foods on the menu these days at Haida Gwaii schools. Thanks to funding from Gwaii Trust for school food programs and many generous donations from both band councils, CHN Haida Fisheries programs, Haida Wild and Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the school freezers have been stocked with salmon, halibut and other seafoods this winter. Deer meat was also a regular occurrence on the menu thanks to donations from local hunters and the Llgaay gwii sdiihlda - Restoring Balance project aimed at restoring plant and wildlife habitat by eradicating deer on four islands in Gwaii Haanas. Along with their regular meals, students at SNES, GKNS and GTNSS and other schools have been trying out a variety of salad bars this spring with local carrots, school grown greens and BC produce thanks to funding from Farm to Cafeteria Canada.

In addition to eating and preparing foods from the land and the sea, students have been busy putting away all kinds of overwintered and frozen local foods, preparing and planting gardens/green houses and getting out on food field trips with support from the North and South End Pantries. Some of the pantry activities included canning salmon, making jam, making fruit leather, making carrot juice, carrot crackers, pumpkin soup and apple chips with many valued teachers from the community. Chief Mathew’s students also had a chance to get out with Stan Hansen and Rhonda Bell to pick seaweed and a potential fishing trip is being planned to Copper Bay with the GKNSS students. With many “little hands” helping, the “mother” Rhubarb patch was harvested again this year and new patch was planted at Chief Mathews.

Back in the Canada Day

Pillow Fight

Girl Scouts Over the years, the July 1st weekend gatherings have been a plenty. In the 1920’s, at the July 1st Picnic, one would find the Boy Scouts, first Port Clements Troop manning the lemonade stand while the Girl Guide Troop were in charge of the “Rest Tent”…just as the name implies, a place to rest. As a part of the sporting events, a popular event was the “Pillow Fight” where a pole was hung by two wires, high enough that the contestants’ feet could not touch the ground. Each entrant was given a pillow to whack the other and try to topple the opponent to the ground.

At one time, the Village of Port Clements attended the Canada Day Parade in Prince Rupert. What a hoot! Long before the PC Community Park was built, people watched while kids gave it their all in sack races on the field across from the still standing water tower.

The parade in Port never failed to delight one and all and a special, annual honor went to a lucky gal as the Canada Day Queen. Logger sports, of course, were a yearly highlight as well.
