Haida Gwaii Eyes…Wide Open

Proactive Ponderings about Common Challenges by Shellene Van der Beke

Challenge: Evolving Perceptions of the Economy of Conservation In this issue of the HGT magazine, in Thomas Arnatt’s Haida Gwaii Goshawk article, it states that every dollar spent on conservation brings six dollars back into the local economy (CBC report). When I read this statement for the first time, I found myself saying, “Really? Wow!” Hmm…sure enough, I then read that Science magazine, back in 2002, stated that “The best deal going, by a wide margin, is the environment.” I then found myself wanting to learn more.

Proactive Solutions: Awareness is King

As a bona fide layperson, simple things resonate with me the most; things like water, air and food.

Water: according to the Water Project, every year, 100 billion dollars is spent on bottled water worldwide. So, with the earth’s largest natural filter being the soil, it makes sense that protecting our watersheds will mean tons of money saved by ensuring an ongoing supply of potable drinking water.

Air: being in the air filtration business these days makes for mucho dinero. As stated in a TechSci report, the global air filter market is projected to surpass 19 billion dollars through 2020. So, standing right next to soil, the champion or water filtration, are trees, the aces of air filtration. Maintaining an ample and healthy presence of flora and fauna on the planet keeps more money in the bank. Food: it humbles me and boggles my mind that in Canada, 40% of our food – 27 billion dollars’ worth – ends up in the landfill (Value Chain Management Centre, 2010 report). “Waste not, want not” reads truer now more than ever. Conservation indeed makes economic sense.

“If you really think the environment is less important than the economy, try holding your breath while counting your money.” – Author, independent scholar and permaculturist, Dr. Guy McPherson ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

On July 25th, Haida Gwaii revelled in the news that Petronas’ proposed Liquified Natural Gas project in Port Edward, that had been backed by the BC Liberal Governement, was cancelled. Having started the process in 2012, the reason behind the late pull-out was Petronas was no longer confident in the market conditions. Despite that being the reason they are sticking to, for many this still felt like a win. Many took to social media to share their joy over the projects cancellation. The blue and pink “NO LNG” shirts, which became common attire at the All Native basketball tournament in 2016, were easy to spot that day. Objection to the project has been ever present on Haida Gwaii, especially within the Skidegate Basketball community. Another round of shirts were given out at this year’s Clan Tournament, and then “NO LNG” foam fingers and headbands at the All Native. The Boon Docs – the comic side of small town medicine

Have a Happier Holiday Recently, while walking my friend’s dog at Haydn Turner campground, I talked to a young couple who were suddenly let go from their summer jobs at Wells Gray Park because of the wildfires. They decided at the last minute to venture to Haida Gwaii. I also met a woman from Smithers who travelled here with her husband and two young children for the purpose of finally getting married; they were high school sweethearts! It’s holiday time! We have high hopes for our vacations to meet our needs for new adventure, connection and rest. And at some point, we’ve probably all experienced holidays that left us feeling irritable, tired and just so-so. Now neuroscience research shows us what the brain needs for holiday happiness! So, here’s some tips taken from the book by Jaime Kurtz, PhD, The Happy Traveler: Unpacking the Secrets of Better Vacations.

Tip one:

Did you know that anticipating a holiday provides almost the same positive effects in the brain as actually experiencing the holiday? In the planning stage, leave room for unscheduled time to allow doses of awe and flow. Awe helps us connect to something bigger than ourselves and can open us to life’s deeper meaning. Flow is when you are so immersed in something fun or meaningful that you lose track of time.

Tip two:

Have you ever visited museums or the beach for perfect sunsets and by the fifth one you start to lose interest? The brain, in its brilliant capacity to adapt, registers repetitive visits as “done that, been there”. The trick to keeping it fresh and stimulating is to mix up destinations and experiences so you don’t adapt.

Tip three: Include a bit of uncertainty and challenge in your holiday to stretch you out of your comfort zone, even if you like comfort and predictability. This can be simple things like talking to a stranger (meeting our important social connection need), or eating local, traditional foods. Sign up for that kayak lesson, or take a hike (knowing your limits of course). The ‘climb-every-mountain and

ford-every-stream’ adventurer might consider challenging themself to a day of going nowhere; to just sit and smell the sea air, feel the breeze on their face, and listen to birdsongs. Finally, take time to savor your experience while you are having it. This means put the phone away! Maybe you don’t have to call the office. And yes, take the picture but don’t let getting the perfect shot for Facebook take you away from the present moment. Also, no posting photos on social media until you get home. Stay present right where you are with the people that are right there with you. For those of us not on holiday, these tips can be included in our daily lives with the same effect. I remember vividly my unexpected swim before work last August. That refreshing dip on a warm, sunny morning contained newness, spontaneity, connection to the natural world and flow. I was a “new” person at work that day!

THE

KEEPING UP WITH LOCAL MUSIC AND GOOD TIMES BY PETE MOORE

SCENE

It’s been a busy summer for local music on Haida Gwaii as the scene continues and continues to grow. Kicked off by the rainsoaked Chown Town Throw Down on June 3rd, momentum has continued to roll, even taking Haida Gwaii Punk bands Jason Camp and the Posers and Dub Jackson Band (of which I am the keyboardist) off-island.

SBC, Vancouver

SBC is right on the corner of Hasting and Main, the heart of the Vancouver homeless population and the frontline of the BC Fentanyl crisis. Getting to spend time in that neighbourhood was a humbling experience, one that I look back on as a main takeaway of the tour. Despite the area’s reputation, I felt it to be an important area to experience given the news surrounding it.

The Punk Quake Tour, although featuring fewer shows than originally planned due to a few last-minute cancellations, was still full to the brim of highlights. At the Terrace show, we shared the stage with local rockers the Coastal Drifters, who we met when they came to Haida Gwaii earlier this year. After Terrace, we hopped on a flight to Vancouver. With a few days to spare in the city, we tried to make the most of it by doing some busking. Dub Jackson Band’s upbeat tunes always seem to go over well near an ocean, so accordingly we drew a decent audience of kayakers and paddle boarders out in Deep Cove. Next stop, Tofino. After a day on the beach full of swimming, skimboarding, and playing tunes, we set up the stage in some locals’ basement. Basement shows have long since been a staple in DIY punk, so this was right up our alley. Co-op, a band of local jammers, opened up the night, and then we followed. Long story short, Tofino knows how to ROCK!

Jason Camp and the Posers at SBC

Inside the SBC, a skateboard ramp funnels the crowds right to the front of the stage. The show was a great night, and we all hope to do it again soon. The momentum continued when we returned back home, as One Man Band Scott Dunbar was touring the island. His final Sunday was capped off with a mini Chown Town Throw Down that featured local talent Jen Wilson and Tow Town as openers. The event was another, of hopefully many, on that stage. Jen Wilson at the Chown Town stage. If you’ve got a music event that you would like organized, promoted, or covered, contact: pmoore@haidagwaiitrader.com

Co-op at Tofino house

After Tofino, we made our way back to Vancouver to play the legendary Smilin’ Buddah Cabaret (now SBC Restaurant), a venue that’s housed Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and the Dead Kennedys to name a few. 8

Haida Gwaii Goshawk A symbol for a higher perspective

WHAM!

Story and illustrations by Thomas Arnatt

The window behind my head shook as I jumped up in total surprise. My friend and I, who had been having a pleasant conversation, ran outside to see what had hit it. Lying on its back was a stunned juvenile Haida Gwaii Goshawk (HG Goshawk). Brown with streaked underparts, it looked at us as if to say, “What was that and who are you?” Within moments it had regained its composure and scooted off through the tall mossy spruce of North Beach. I was both excited and concerned to see such a rare bird up close and I was curious about what its dramatic appearance meant. To learn more, I went to our good friend Teresa’s teepee on the beach to consult her Animal Medicine Cards. “Messenger and the gift of higher perspective” was the hawk card message. And so, the HG Goshawk brings us a profound communiqué: the need for action founded on a higher perspective. And that message is “Help.” The HG Goshawk is federally listed as threatened but it is truly endangered on Haida Gwaii and therefore protected. It has such an involved relationship with forest health that by taking care of them and the environment around them, we help to safeguard their survival. This genetically distinct subspecies is unique to Haida Gwaii and is on its way to extinction unless we help. And we can. We have information from 20 years of monitoring and research to guide us to make informed landscape management plans. For example, we know that access to chickens kills goshawks. So, thanks to initiatives led by the BC Ministry of Forests, we are presently covering chicken coops islandwide. Bringing the HG Goshawk into the spotlight not only inspires change but spurs action for a recovery plan as well. Known as both Accipiter gentilis laingi and Daw gaatl’lxagaa.nga, the HG Goshawk is the epitome of a fierce and wild bird. The adult has a striking dark blue, 10

slate gray back with gray barring on a whitish chest, a sporting white eye stripe punctuated by a deep red eye, like one of those exquisite glowing scarlet agates, and topped with a raw argillite colored crown. To a birdwatcher, it is a rare sight to behold as it keeps to itself flying beneath the canopy of large mature old-growth trees. It’s broad, rounded wings give it needed agility and maneuverability as it hunts prey such as blue grouse, woodpeckers, squirrels, and marbled murrelets. It is believed that the HG Goshawk survives the winters here by hunting ducks and other seabirds. Biologist Frank Doyle, who is a prominent HG Goshawk expert, reported that in 2016, out of the 16 monitored areas on Haida Gwaii, there was no evidence of breeding and fledgling young - except one fledged young reported in Gwaii Haanas. Although bird populations have always been fairly low on Haida Gwaii due to the small size of the islands and the far distance to the mainland, this news is very concerning. Doyle’s research has identified that compatible forestry practices such as: • restoring riparian zones, • thinning and pruning second growth to speed up goshawk habitat recovery, • sustainable harvest management strategies that support future breeding areas, • continued research and monitoring of their nest sites and foraging areas and, • forest worker training to identify HG Goshawks and report sightings immediately, will assist in the survival of the HG Goshawk. CBC Radio has reported that every dollar spent on conservation brings six dollars back into the local economy, and that there is a similar return on dollars spent on the arts. Developing a forest economy focused on habitat restoration, value-added forest uses, Haida cultural revival and tourism are just a few of the options that we have yet to fully explore.

“…every dollar spent on conservation brings six dollars back into the local economy...“ - CBC Radio Under the Council of the Haida Nation (CHN) Land Use Agreement, HG Goshawk nesting areas on Haida Gwaii are protected by a reserve zone of 200 hectares around a nest tree. Creating and maintaining foraging sites is also critical. All islanders and visitors can help to save this bird by keeping an eye out for it and/or any sign of it and then report sightings to the CHN Heritage & Natural Resources Department at 250-626-6058 and to the Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations Species at Risk Coordinator at 250-559-6200. This rare and stunning bird of prey can be identified by its “cac, cac, cac” scream and by its rather untidy and inconspicuous nests located under the canopy of hemlock or spruce trees. Underneath the trees, one will also find the remains of prey (feathers and bones) and after-meal pellets. Tourists I talk with – especially people here for the first time - are visibly moved by the beauty and specialness of Haida Gwaii. Their trips to Gwaii Haanas and Naikoon Park leave them sparkly-eyed and speechless and the sense of “Island Time” reminds them how much the pressures of city life demand of them. The HG Goshawk lives on island time; time where patience and respect prevail. It is the natural world, the untouched, pristine, treasured world that these birds live in and need.

HG Goshawk painting on the Masset Post Office

Recently, I painted an HG Goshawk as a part of the Masset Post Office mural. One of 18 stamps featured, it brought back so many good memories as I painted it. I remembered seeing that fallen bird outside of the cabin window. Another time, I stumbled across feeding on a grouse among the enchanted groves on the White Creek trail. I have also seen one barrel across a windy gray sky towards the Delkatla Sanctuary, owning the air. These are all spots in time in a bird lover’s life, and they confirm our interconnectivity with nature. In the book “H is for Hawk”, Helen Macdonald describes the goshawk as “A griffin from the pages of an illuminated bestiary. Something bright and distant, like gold falling through water.” With our help, how uplifting, empowering, and awe-inspiring it will be to see the Haida Gwaii Goshawk stabilize and

HOUSING CRISIS

Identifying the problem and pondering solutions with Bonnie Olson

By Pete Moore

In the May issue, we touched on the expiration of the BC Housing Subsidies, and how the province-wide crisis is affecting us here on Haida Gwaii. However, the issue extends further. The difficulty with finding housing on island these days is a widespread experience, one that Bonnie Olson is familiar with. Bonnie holds two contracts with Islands Wellness Society (IWS), one for victim services and another for victim outreach. This means she deals with those experiencing crime or trauma in their lives, and with the two contracts combined, she serves a lot of people in the community. Although IWS doesn’t specifically provide housing for those in need, it is something that Bonnie often helps clients with. “Housing is a core issue when you’re dealing with people in trauma or crisis,” she explains, noting that people in these situations are often escaping an unhealthy environment and are searching for a new home for the time being. “I’m not a housing outreach worker,” she clarifies, but given her line of work, sometimes it’s a necessary step to getting people on the right path. But with the housing shortage on island, this is getting to be a harder and harder service to provide people. “As far as I know, [the issue] is mirrored everywhere,” she explains. Although Bonnie is based in Queen Charlotte, she has clients all over the islands, and has a counterpart in Masset. “What I’ve noticed, since I’ve lived here for 22 years,” she says, “is all the smaller places where they might have been suitable for a low income house, are all vacation rentals now.” This is something Mayor Greg Martin has mentioned previously. However, both stated this isn’t inherently bad. Tourism is quickly becoming the biggest economy on Haida Gwaii, and so naturally residents are working to keep up with that, something Bonnie can respect having run a coffee shop for 13 years. “In my estimation, we have a huge crisis of infrastructure based on the large amount of tourism that is coming here,” she counters, explaining that is more so the issue. “Personally, I like to think of solutions,” she says. Bonnie favours creative ways of establishing enough units for those in need. “We need to solve this now, and then we have some infrastructure,” she explains. With the communities’ small numbers, she believes solutions should be easily attainable, and could serve as a model for others to look to. This fall, a Housing Forum is taking place to identify the specific needs of our communities. For more information, contact the QC Housing Development Society at 250-559-8800 August 2017 13

Sacred Stories

PRESERVED

By Shellene Van der Beke, illustration by Gwaai Edenshaw

Often when I look out across the charismatic Hecate Strait, I hear my Grandfather’s voice. I remember the rich and colorful stories he shared with me as a child, such as when he worked aboard the SS Catala, a 229foot passenger and cargo Union Steamship vessel that travelled up and down the BC Coast back in the mid 1920’s. His words are very much a part of who I am and no doubt why I have such reverence for coastal living. His words remain ever in my heart and give me ongoing strength, appreciation and awe. Of the many ways that wisdom is passed down through the generations, oral history offers a different perspective that cannot be found in the written word. Often shared by Elders, spoken words provide unparalleled perspectives; priceless viewpoints that can offer balance to today’s web-based communications. Recently, I had the honor of sitting down with wellrespected Haida Elder, GwaaGanad (Diane Brown), who has been teaching and working with the Haida language and oral history for most of her life. “We were never, ever a written society,” affirms GwaaGanad, “we were all oral.” I have a deep appreciation and awe for Haida Gwaii, this place my family and I now call home, and having the opportunity to learn more from GwaaGanad about Haida oral history, left me sitting at the edge of my seat. “The Creation stories are all oral,” she continues, “and take as many as four days to tell. To go from beginning to end, these storytellers were trained from pretty much birth. There were 60 to 80 people in a longhouse. Your Elders were there; your parents were there. When an exceptional one was born, the Elders knew, because they are going to be our storyteller, so at a young age, they start telling them the Creation stories; it’s their life, it’s set for them.” GwaaGanad goes on to share with me that there are three types of Haida oral history stories, Creation, Along the Way of Creation and Personal stories, with the most important being the legends of Creation. “Elders would sit this young person down and tell a piece of the legend 14

from start to finish and this would happen in the evening. So, you would have 60 to 80 people gathering and the Elder would tell a whole section of a story, then they would say for the one in training to tell the story. The minute they made a mistake, it was called off, everybody would go to bed. They had to tell the story word for word. The next night they would have another go at it until by the time they’re an adult, they have it. And then, it’ll be their job to find a replacement, each clan would have a storyteller or two, just as each clan would have singers, artists and a medicine person.” GwaaGanad reported that there are 10-12 ladies currently learning the Haida language, and after two years, they are getting very close to being fluent. They are the first group to utilize everything the Skidegate Haida Immersion Program (SHIP) has produced including 70 written lessons and an extensive glossary. Thanks to all of SHIP’s hard work, every story that has ever been told is on tape. With the ongoing commitment from GwaaGanad and those like her, sacred Haida history is being preserved.

HAIDA GWAII LOCAL FOODS PROJECT Skidegate Health Centre - Stewards of Wellness The mission of the Skidegate Health Centre (SHC) is to empower generations of Haida to achieve their highest level of wellness. Two summers ago, the SHC hosted two semesters on cultural sensitivity for UBC Health students. As their main project, the students were asked to develop a Haida Food Guide. They met with Elders, went on food gathering expeditions and interviewed traditional food gatherers. What resulted are two impressive pamphlets that highlight the stories they heard. They are titled “Wellness from the Sea” and “Wellness from the Land”.

“Wellness from the Land” includes information on Jiit’l (Red Elderberry), Xaaxa (Labrador Tea), Guudangxal (Stinging Nettles), Glaayingwal (Licorice Root) and K’aad (Deer). In the introduction to there is a wise and moving quote from Lauren Brown, “Knowing who we are (Haida) makes us well. By speaking our language, knowing our lineage, and being involved in our food gathering makes us well rooted and connected to our sense of self. Often, during times of food gathering, people are well in all aspects of health. Our historical access to an abundance of food from the land and sea created time

Based on the four Haida Laws, these guides are information-packed and beautifully laid out. Each provide brief introductions to medicinal and nutritive properties of traditional Haida foods. “Wellness from the Sea” features details about a wide array of food from the ocean. Delectables such as K’uust’an (Crab), Giinuu (Sea Cucumber), K’aaw (Herring Roe on Kelp) and Taaxid (Sockeye Salmon) are but a few highlighted.

to develop our complex art, laws, and society. Both bodies of work share local food knowledge and respect that are worthwhile lessons for us all. Located at 156 - 2nd Avenue in Skidegate, the SHC is open between 8:30-12 and 1-4:30 Monday-Friday and for more information they can be reached at 250559-4610. St. Marks

Still Standing and Cute as a Bug’s Ear By Shellene Van der Beke

elightfully nestled in the center of the quaint, seaside town of Port Clements sits the more than 100-year-old St. Marks Anglican Church and the St. Marks Gift & Gallery. Back in 1913, this church was built on land donated by one of Port Clements’ founders, Eli Tingley. Charles “Matey” Clayton was contracted to build the 36’ x 22’ structure and the tender, dated Oct. 29, 1913, was for $925. St. Marks held its first service on January 25, 1914 and since it was the only church in the area, many denominations shared it over the years. Besides common uses like christenings, weddings and funerals, this longstanding structure was also home to social gatherings, a school, and during the flu epidemic in 1917-18, it served as an emergency hospital. By the 1980’s and 90’s, the building had fallen into disrepair. Then, in 1999, the Port Clements Economic Development Advisory Committee and the PC Council and Staff embarked on a restoration project that spanned several years. A noteworthy restoration detail is a stained glass window that features the famous Haida Gwaii white raven. Designed by Elizabeth Stewart and constructed by Bruce Tessaro, it is said to be breathtaking when the sun shines through it. 16

Today, St. Marks is the home of the St. Marks Gift & Gallery which features a wide array of products - 80% of which are locally sourced. One will find everything from affordably priced, handcrafted jewelry, cards, art, photography, dried chanterelles, kelp flakes, salal jelly and body care products to curios, books and tasty treats like fudge and peanut brittle. There is also a convenient and fun kid’s space so that folks with children can shop at their leisure. Equally renowned as the white raven and located right beside St. Marks is the Golden Spruce sapling...well worth checking out. For the full stories, be sure to drop by either St. Marks or the Port Clements Museum which is located just a hop and a skip away. St. Marks Gift & Gallery is located at 54 Bayview Drive and is open for business Wednesday to Saturday from 10am-4pm. For more information call 250-557-6809. The Port Clements Museum, at 45 Bayview Drive, is open from 10am-4pm seven days per week and can be reached at 250-557-4576. If email is preferred, both St. Marks and the PC Museum can be reached at pcmuseum@qcislands.ca

With August Came Summer

As the summer progressed, June-uary turned into a equally rainy and cold July. What was beginning to look like a “winter instead of summer” situation took a sudden turn when August rolled in. Haida Gwaii resident’s were greeted with beautiful sunshine and clear blue skies. What’s more is that the forecast was calling for it to last more than a couple hours. Let’s hope the nice weather holds!

An aerial photo of the Black Wolfe, which can be spotted in the top left corner

Pesuta’s Sister

Taking a look at the little known shipwreck outside of Queen Charlotte By Pete Moore

As a local knowledge holder and story teller, when Jags Brown hears about something he hasn’t heard or seen before, he hops right to action. When Mark Yaroshuk told him of a shipwreck between Bay Street and Robertson Island, Jags went on an investigation. After waiting for a low enough tide, Jags walked out to and around Robertson island. Low and behold, there it was: a shipwreck that effectively hides by spending most of its time underwater.

So now that he’d found and documented it, the next step was to learn more about it. Internet searches proved unhelpful as any “shipwreck” themed queries are dominated by Pesuta centric results. At this point it Jag’s sought out someone with more answers than Google: Sergius De Bucy. Sure enough, Sergius was able to tell Jags enough to get his investigation off the ground.

The ship was called the Black Wolfe, and shipwrecked in Queen Charlotte in April 1929, just four months after the more commonly know Pesuta (which shipwrecked just north of the Tlell River mouth in December 1928). Both ships were built about 1919 by Sanderson and Porter company of Raymond, out of Washington. Both were purchased by the Pacific Coyle Navigation Company, of Vancouver, and were brought to Haida Gwaii for use as log barges. The Black Wolfe was 264 feet long (the same length as the Pesuta). Next low tide, keep an eye out for Pesuta’s sister. It can be spotted from most areas in Queen Charlotte. Top photo courtesy of the Village of Queen Charlotte’s historical photo bank.
