A warm, light-filled space that enhances student life and insprires collaboration.

Stony Brook University Library is a new 30,000 square-foot building that integrates information management, technology, and a student-centered setting where study, intellectual discourse and social interaction provide an anchor for college life. The two story library includes a mezzanine where group study spaces overlook the reading room and meeting spaces on the lower level. Collaborative study is encouraged through two sinuous work/ study tables, and an assortment of smaller meeting and conference rooms equipped with integrated technology, comprising an online resource center that can be used by individuals and small groups.

The Rockefeller PAVE Academy University

PAVE Academy

A public charter school founded on the belief that a strong school can transform a community. PAVE Academy is a three-story 43,000 square-foot building with a front play yard and a rear courtyard. It accommodates 18 full-size homeroom classrooms, 3 shared classrooms for science, art, and music, a cafeteria with kitchen, a gymnasium, and administrative spaces. The Academy’s core values of perseverance, achievement, vibrancy and excellence are included as bold graphic texts covering the walls throughout the building, embracing and surrounding the children with encouraging words. Informal study and meeting spaces in the corridors provide opportunities for group projects, as well as study and interaction among students of all ages.

Mitchell Giurgola designed a master plan for the 21.5-acre SHAPE International School campus (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe) near Mons, Belgium, which called for the replacement of all existing campus buildings with new, stateof-the-art facilities for the US and other NATO member nations. Designed for 21st century students, the schools are equipped with sophisticated information technology systems, including fully integrated Smart Boards fully integrated, a video/broadcast studio, highspeed wireless internet, and voice-overinternet protocol supported digital services, which enhance communication capabilities for both staff and students.

A state-of-the-art teaching and research facility for a renowned Computer Science program. The new 76,000 square-foot Computer Science Building at Stony Brook University provides state-of-the-art graduate and undergraduate teaching and research laboratories for the Department of Computer Science at Stony Brook. Ranked among the leading computer science research programs in the nation, spaces were designed to accommodate specialized research topics such as visualization and graphics, wireless and mobile computing, cybersecurity, and algorithms. The new three-story facility includes a striking, light-filled atrium that offers open space and study areas for collaborative work and information sharing.

Harlem Children’s Zone, Sendero Verde

Harlem Children’s Zone, Sendero Verde

A charter school that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life. Mitchell Giurgola is currently working with Harlem Children’s Zone and Civic Builders to design the fit-out of a new K-5 school that will serve 550 students. The project is under construction and will open for students in the fall of 2022. Uniquely located within Sendero Verde, a large mixed-use affordable housing development in East Harlem, the new facility will provide new classrooms, a cafeteria, gymnasium, music and art rooms, as well as administrative spaces. Bright colors and patterns are woven throughout the project to create a lively setting for students both in the classroom and in larger gathering spaces such as the cafeteria and gymnasium.
