The resources are not equally distributed among the women of a society. Among different communities of women, victims of domestic violence are one of the most vulnerable groups, and solving their problems requires a multifaceted and interdisciplinary approach. A major step for women who are unable or unwilling to return home is to have an environment where they can learn skills, prepare to start short-term businesses, and ultimately grow. Empowering abused women is the answer to bringing them back to society and providing a platform for their voices to be heard, voices that are silenced in the shadow of violence.

We studied the urban fabric of the center of Tehran (capital of Iran). This area has a mixed texture which is important in several ways. The most important spot in this zone, which has played a role in the formation of other activities and attributing a special identity to this area, is the University of Tehran, which has caused the coexistence of different functions and the attraction of diverse social layers. In addition, the presence of contemporary architectural manifestations of Tehran has enriched the spatial quality of this area. We came across a large number of these old buildings, which are mostly abandoned or left in poor condition due to a lack of care, but they are still valuable because of their quality of space and design style.

Enghelab Street

The articulation of our project is placed at the intersection of women’s empowerment and the revitalization of dilapidated buildings. This project seeks to define an alternative space for victims of violence to heal their wounds and stand on their feet in its memorable rooms. In this regard, we first mapped some of these old buildings on a larger scale. Afterward, we formulated the buildings into a network of meaningful relationships in such a way that they can work as a complex and cover the needs of women in the four areas of safe house, treatment and counseling services, skill learning and entrepreneurship. Our main focus was on the third and fourth areas: the adaptation of the Boulevard House into Boulevard Collective 204, a place to pursue lost dreams and freedoms.

The Boulevard House

The story of this building began in the early 1950s; it was originally designed by Paul Abkar and now its owners have decided to replace it with a multi-story apartment. On the other hand, the Cultural Heritage Organization wants to take the house from the owners because of its historical value and probably leave it to suffer the same fate as the rest of the buildings left unconserved.

This house has also been the point of many disputes with the University of Tehran since this institution has also started to acquire the surrounding units in line with its development plan.

Another point is the dominant approach seen in the renovation of similar buildings in this area: turning old houses into cafes or galleries. In fact, the approach we adopted in the reuse of this building is a critique of the gentrification process and the profitability logic of reconstruction.

Collective Starts

The name of this place and its three main zones are inspired by the art collectives of the early 20th century and are also related to the activities of the surrounding galleries, including: constructivism (educational spaces), impressionism (participatory and collective spaces) and expressionism (entrepreneurial-exhibition spaces). The third zone has been added on the south side of the courtyard to accommodate the communication with the professional community. The scenario of this collective starts with skill-learning spaces, arouses creativity in collaborative spaces, and finally becomes voices and spontaneous expressions in entrepreneurial-exhibition spaces. Women would participate in the construction of the collective’s interior spaces, furniture and partitions; handicrafts, paintings, pastries and other professional skills that women learn will connect them to the economic cycle of the society through the showroom, gallery and entrepreneurship space, and will gradually enable their economic self-sufficiency.

In Tehran’s suburbs, there used to live homeless people called (Goorkhab); that is, grave-sleepers who slept in dug holes reserved for burial of the dead. Five hundred years after the dominance of AR technology, Tehran is virtualized into a post-Metaversal city where the idea of community has been lost since History just ended. Public urban spaces are no longer occupied, resulting in the fall of social concepts that have developed over History. Distant from physical huggings, street activism, and the places that isolated collective memories and emotions, no one can remember the immediate experiences of commune-related ideas.

Under the reign of the Meta-Emperor, the historical places are left to decay and perish. The residents’ bodily experiences are bound to the minimum space they need to survive in the Metaverse-PLUS complex. They have been totally detached from the physical space, having lived in an abstraction of the (now the only real non-existent) universe for a long time.

A decade ago, after a citywide outbreak of a memory-defecting virus, people went on Meta-strikes, their action making the Rivers of Lethe to flow: huge curtains hanging from drones right above marked points of Tehran where social events were once documented, disproportionate avatars projecting images discovered by each citizen on the curtains, and a sarcastic representation of meaningful experiences deliberately distorted by the authorities.

These spaces were made for people to recall a disfigured perception of collective-driven concepts, making us wonder which one is more grave-sleeper: a Goorkhab or a Metaverser?

3. Explosion of Imploded Urban Design Practice 2021

The concept of this project originated from Bernard Tschumi›s design of Park de la Villette, which is a critical moment in the history of Urban Design. In the context of Tehran, foreign approaches have heavily influenced architectural and urban projects.

Additionally, there is a trend of planners and designers imposing their personal attitudes onto these projects. This situation has led to a lack of user agency and creativity in the development of life matters, which is a significant issue.

This research project aimed to address this issue by empowering individuals to become their own designers. A collaborative approach was adopted to ensure that the outcome would be well-received by a diverse group of individuals. The collective-built projects are adaptable, fostering a culture of creativity among citizens. The instruction to create, demolish, and recreate follies encouraged experimentation and innovation. This approach aligns with the principles of participatory design, which emphasizes the importance of involving users in the design process. By empowering individuals to create their own spaces, they can address their upcoming needs, which may otherwise be neglected by decision-makers. This approach also aligns with the concept of placemaking, which emphasizes the importance of creating spaces that reflect the needs and desires of the community.

4. “De/ Re”Constructed Tenement National Competition: Residential Apartment in “Tehran” Hosted by: “Kooche” Magazine 2nd Place Winner (Result) 2021

In recent years, the residential areas of Tehran have experienced substantial transformations in living conditions, leading to substandard living standards for many urban residents. The building industry shoulders some responsibility for this situation, as the prototypes of residential buildings often lack quality in terms of livability, suitability, and functionality. Furthermore, existing building laws and regulations have proven to be ineffective, exacerbating the issue. Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge that in the past century, Tehran residents have been fortunate to reside in high-quality buildings with minimal amenities.

As part of this research project, traditional techniques have been redeveloped and presented as an alternative approach to designing residential buildings. The primary focus was on optimizing spatial efficiency, creating communal areas, maximizing natural light, integrating vibrant terraces and porches, and establishing a spatial hierarchy. These practices facilitated the development of modernized residential buildings that harmoniously blend traditional and contemporary design principles.

Firstly, all the sets were used without any overlap.

Then, the second and third sets of curtains were superimposed to create a solid wall that separates the inside from the outside. Finally, the innermost layer defines the interior walls that create thresholds inside a unit.

Feasibility of Pedestrian Level in Tehran The approach used in this project can be applied to already-built buildings. This procedure increases green spaces and terraces in a compact, polluted city.

By plugging in lightweight structures, a higher level of pedestrian-oriented paths can be created, leading to an eco-friendly design on a larger scale within the city.

The Iran Science Museum represents an integral component of Tehran’s physical and cultural development, offering a platform for exploration and serving as a nexus for societal convergence. In the contemporary context, Tehran recognizes and embraces such opportunities, dedicating itself to enhancing the city’s infrastructure for the improvement of its inhabitants. The city’s architectural landscape reflects its historical lineage, embodying the collective essence of its people, society, and culture, transcending mere temporal and spatial dimensions.

The museum operates within three distinct realms: itself, its subject matter, and its contextual surroundings. As one among numerous social and cultural institutions with a comprehensive perspective on Tehran, it fosters the ongoing generation and dissemination of scientific knowledge as an innovative and inclusive force. Through its pedestrian pathways and educational workshops, the museum encourages visitors to engage in scientific inquiry, functioning as a communal hub for presentations and events.

Situated atop a hill at the intersection of two key highways, it offers a unique perspective overlooking Tehran. The spatial arrangement of the museum’s exhibitions and galleries draws inspiration from Iran’s historical scientific progress, aiming to present a unified whole. This spatial organization bridges the gap between intuitive and practical scientific knowledge of the modern era, reflecting a cohesive approach to the presentation of scientific achievements.

The implementation of the previously discussed design strategies has been adeptly translated into physical components and integrated into the site to harmonize with its natural topography. The natural terrain has played a pivotal role in guiding the placement of these components.

Initially, lightweight structures in the form of simple platforms were considered to promote social interaction within scientific contexts.

The museum’s interior features four distinct galleries, referred to as “Gaam,” each representing significant stages of scientific events and moments in Iranian history. Additionally, the museum includes two main halls, or “Vaadi,” located on opposite sides of the facility, symbolizing Eastern and Western Science.

Subsequently, the primary section of the museum’s landscape was purposefully designed to accommodate scientific experiments, which are facilitated through temporary installations. Lastly, at the summit of the museum, three workshops are accessible, enabling visitors to observe ongoing scientific activities. This approach not only optimizes the utilization of the site but also enhances the overall visitor experience by seamlessly integrating scientific engagement with the natural environment.

Moreover, the workshops are readily accessible from both the exterior and interior of the museum, fostering a seamless integration of hands-on scientific engagement within the museum’s educational offerings. This intentional design not only provides a comprehensive portrayal of Iran’s scientific heritage but also encourages interactive learning experiences for visitors.

6. “Kar-gol Khaneh” TAO Office (more information: Recreation of Rey Cement Factory) National Competition: Call for Recreational Plans for Rey Cement Factory Role: Studies, 3d Development, Presentation 2020

First sequence

Rey is a city in Iran with a long, rich history that tells the story of its people through times of war and other challenges. Despite these setbacks, Rey has managed to maintain its agricultural way of life, which has helped preserve its ecological and cultural landscape for future generations.

Poor City

The Rey cement factory played a significant role in the development of the region’s residential areas. However, after being abandoned, the factory’s surroundings became a temporary place for people to live in.

Furthermore, the development of transportation infrastructure over time resulted in the region becoming isolated from urban development.

Undeveloped urban fabric

The area has suffered from a lack of citizen involvement, resulting in the government’s reduced attention to the region. Moreover, low land prices have enticed industrial factories to set up operations in the vicinity.

Second sequence

The construction of the cement factory in the historical area of Rey and near the valuable civilizations led to significant changes in the area’s history. Agriculture declined, and farmers became factory workers.

This resulted in an increase in the city’s population, leading to the replacement of agricultural land with urban blocks.

Third sequence

The factory in the City of Ray operated non-stop for 50 years, from 1933 to 1983. During this time, it caused damage to nearby fields and slowed down the development of other industrial structures in the city.

However, when production stopped in 1983, the citizens of Rey, who relied on the factory for their livelihoods and found their identity in the industrial system, suddenly felt lost without it.

In addition, the factory had caused significant harm to the environment, and the pollution it produced damaged the ecosystem. The country was also at war, which caused all production structures to stop functioning.

As a result, the citizens who had been a part of the production system were now just observers of the abandoned factory area.

Enhancing the regional identity of the historical heritage factory can promote community involvement through various activities, such as working, shopping, and socializing in a familiar setting.

The proposal suggests converting the factory into a hub for agriculture, fresh produce procurement, and social interaction to revitalize the facility and promote community development.

Many inhabitants in this region are employed in other parts of the city.

As a result, a need for more attachment to the locality has arisen, which has led to a reduction in its overall livability.

Fourth sequence

The new factory produces specific parts for selling agricultural products, enabling farmers to sell locally and communicate with nearby distributors.

In 2023, Kaar[Gol]Khaaneh will be working to restore the green landscape of the Rey plain and repair damage caused by 50 years of environmental destruction. The new complex will focus on reviving the historical relationship between the factory and its neighboring residents.

It aims to promote sustainable practices for the citizens of Rey, both now and in the future, by creating a new urban identity incorporating technology and traditional agricultural practices.

Undeveloped agricultural practices

Outdated farming methods used by farmers in the region lead to reduced productivity and profitability.

Modernization of farming practices, including provision of technical know-how and equipment, is critical to prevent further decline of the agricultural industry.

The new factory can boost agricultural practices in three ways: by providing space for less experienced farmers, incorporating advanced science labs for innovation and productivity, and fostering a symbiotic relationship between senior and junior farmers to facilitate knowledge transfer.

Agriculture is not profitable

Due to the long distances that farmers have to transport their products to customers, they often end up selling them at low prices.

In order to promote agricultural practices on barren lands, a range of cubic greenhouses is planned to be constructed, extending the factory’s boundary to the south side. These greenhouses will provide a conducive environment for farmers and researchers to grow their products under specific conditions that may not be possible on regular farms. Additionally, the range of plants grown here will include flowers and edible vegetables that can be sold to local residents, offering an opportunity to boost the local economy.

Transplantation

Old cement silos are turned into a vertical greenhouse in which a range of seeds can be grown. To provide the required lighting for growing, a set of artificial lights, which comply with the latest technology, is considered.

The urbanization of Tehran, while advancing the city’s infrastructure, has had a detrimental impact on its urban landscape. The construction of highways has resulted in the fragmentation of the city, leading to diminished accessibility, underutilized spaces, and a predominant focus on vehicular traffic. This evolution has ultimately eroded the city’s distinctive identity. In response to these challenges, we undertook extensive research to delve into the historical underpinnings of the project, uncovering the site’s significant role in Tehran’s modernization.

Our investigation revealed that the area originally housed the first national bank, signifying its historical and social significance in providing financial services to the public. Subsequently, we devised a comprehensive plan to reconnect the disjointed areas, emphasizing the social and historical importance of the site. The design process commenced with the drawing of generative lines (ribbons) that extend from each side of the site, aligning with historical streets and orientations. Our main objective was to humanize this mechanized environment by fostering diverse forms of social interaction for both local residents and pedestrians, thereby diverging from the conventional approach of prioritizing highway construction. This approach aims to re-establish its intrinsic connection to the city’s social fabric.

The land of this project is part of an old factory with two types of products in the construction industry and modern agriculture field. A large field along with pedestrian and bicycle paths and recreational land use has divided the project into two parts inside and outside. This spatial organization is used in the outer layer of striation which operates in the north-south direction of the relation between the plant and the northern natural environment. ‫‏‬The independent applications of the project are located in the outer layers, the main field of the project can have the characteristics of a broad public space.

The project’s main goal was to revitalize this historic yet neglected area of Tehran by considering the context and heritage of the area and making the most of the land for the intended purposes.

An island surrounded by three highways in the city and its surroundings has suffered a significant reduction in its connection to the city. The area is surrounded by low-quality housing, abandoned plots of land, and industrial workshops. Most residential areas are disconnected, unsuitable for comfortable living, and barren lands have further diminished the neighborhood’s potential.

Our project is centered around the idea of “creating a center of leisure and social activity instead of a green landscape to promote the community.

Tehran has undergone a rapid transformation due to the exponential growth of its population and urbanization. Consequently, the city’s urban landscape has become notably diverse. Building facades have become increasingly significant and are subject to strict municipal rules and regulations in the construction industry. Consequently, the spatial value created by the building’s form has been eliminated, resulting in the meanings conveyed to the building’s users becoming insignificant. Thus, it is crucial to distinguish between designing facades and other spaces.

In 2016, the TAO office presented the Puff-fuse project for the design competition of the Helal company’s office building in Tehran. The competition was held during the construction of the building’s skeleton on Taleghani Street.

We decided to incorporate a public space into the project by extending the sidewalk into the project with the use of both Puff and Fuse techniques. Throughout the design process, our goal was to utilize techniques that are pertinent to modern Tehran spaces. By identifying the commonly used techniques in the city, we have opted for these two methods to create the desired public space. Furthermore, these techniques provide a critique of the facade design by modifying the prevailing structures in Tehran.

The project was designed to have an urban outdoor area that is an integral part of the city, open to all individuals, and serves as a hub for a variety of activities. Our belief is that modern-day Tehran necessitates “Puffusion” rather than extrusion.‫‏‬

11. ARK Urban Design Practice 2018

While exploring the streets of the “Enghelab” district years ago, I discerned a distinct potential within the area that catered to a specific demographic. During the daytime, this section of Tehran is bustling with a diverse crowd of people, including officials, scholars, students, and ordinary citizens. However, as night falls, the streets become deserted, with only artists wandering about. The presence of galleries, cafes, and pedestrian-friendly streets entices them to spend their time in this unconventional locale. Their collective presence imbues the environment with an artistic spirit, with the essence of art seemingly regenerating through their presence.

The concept of the ARK materialized in my mind by picturing an ark floating on a dark sea. During the nighttime, wanderers ascend its ladders to access a space where art is both celebrated and deliberated.

It is worth noting that the ARK may host musical festivals on certain nights and be occupied by actors and actresses on others. Everything depends on the flow of art events.

Leisure Zone “Laleh” Park

Inspired by the Bauhaus movement, my bachelor’s thesis project sought to establish a dynamic environment for graduates in Architecture, Industrial Design, Sculpture, and Graphic Design to engage directly with the community. The building’s program encompasses cutting-edge laboratories equipped with advanced technologies such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and simulation machines, as well as workshops featuring the latest equipment. Furthermore, the inclusion of conference rooms serves as platforms for showcasing products and accomplishments in these disciplines, while collaborative spaces are strategically integrated to foster interdisciplinary interactions between creators and clients.

A central challenge encountered during the design process revolved around facilitating meaningful connections between individuals and the activities within the building. To address this, the building was conceived with inter-visibility in mind, enhancing the relationship between individuals and the building’s interior. Additionally, an outdoor event space was incorporated on the underground level, providing opportunities for open-air presentations. Finally, the integration of various stages throughout the site’s landscape serves to further support creators, offering temporary usage options for their activities.

Spatial Organization

The spatial functions are distributed across six floors.

Facade as Medium

On the western side of the building, there are movable panels that serve the purpose of preventing excess sunlight from entering in the afternoon. However, these panels have also been used to create a media platform for industrial and graphic artists.

Temporary artworks are installed on these panels which can be replaced with new ones.

Additionally, the whole western facade can be transformed into a screen for displaying media art.

13. Swimming Pool Technical Design Studio Instructor: Dr. Fayyazi Group Project with Parnia Azini 2015

We were tasked with designing and constructing a pool, considering its structural type, construction method (from foundation to finishing), ventilation system, and joint details. The building needed a lightweight structure that could be erected quickly while considering a maintenance process compatible with the structural properties for long-term use.

One of the key considerations in our design was the ventilation system, which needed to provide adequate air circulation throughout the pool area to ensure a comfortable and safe environment for swimmers. We also paid close attention to joint details, making sure that all connections between different parts of the pool were watertight and secure.

The building features a dynamic system for removing ceiling panels that can be rolled to each side, allowing fresh air to circulate during swimming sessions.

In the summer, the indoor pool can be transformed into an outdoor pool.

The building’s weight is conveyed to the earth through a series of linear foundations.

The wave-like shape of the structure is created by a series of arcs, which are then covered with punched metal sheets.

Considering how the weight of the ceiling is transferred to the foundation is crucial since the arcs act as both beams and columns.

14. Replicated/ 1968 Design Practice 2018

In August 1968, Ford Company debuted its latest Mustang model, the 1969 Mustang, to the general public. With its striking aesthetic qualities, the vehicle immediately captivated audiences. Beyond its superb functionality, the automotive envelope’s design was so compelling that it became the seminal choice for classic cars even five decades later.

Through an inquiry, this project aimed to replicate and translate the 19689 Mustang’s visual properties to bridge gaps between architectural practice and automobile design relative to external form. Accordingly, properties including materials, curvature, integrated form, illumination, sense of dynamism, and finishing details were identified, analyzed, and subsequently translated into an architectural replication lexicon.
