elizabeth gilbert

American journalist and author best known for Eat, Pray, Love.

In Februrary 2004, Gilbert was in a car accident and was paralyzed from the neck down; doctors told her she would never walk again but after more than 5 years of rehab, she now walks.

A subject in “Trial by Fire,” Gilbert knew of Willingham when he was on Death row for alledgedly setting a fire that killed his three children, investigating his case and revealing flaws in the

evidence used to convict him and opening the door to the possibility of his innocence. She grew up on a Christmas tree farm, her father was a chemical engineer and her mother was a nurse that established the Planned Parenthood clinic, attended New York University, studied political science and wrote short stories.

Her first short story “Pilgrims,” was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway award. In her early years in New York she worked as a

journalist and wrote in GQ about her experiences bartending on the Lower East side, eventually becoming the basis of Coyote Ugly. Gilbert resisted taking literature classes and writing workshops “I never thought that the best place for me to find my voice would be in a room filled with twenty other people trying to find their voices... I felt that if I was writing on my own, I didn’t need a class, and if I wasn’t writing on my own, I didn’t deserve one.”

Elizabeth published her first novel, Stern Men, the story of brutal territory wars between two remote fishing islands off the coast of Maine. Gilbert believed that writers find stories not in a seminar roo, but by investigating the world.

jhumpa lahiri

Nilanjana Sudeshna “Jhumpa” Lahiri debuted a collection of short stories “Interpreter of Maladies,” which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the PEN/Hemingway Award. The first novel, “The Namesake,” was adapted into a popular film of the same name was a New York Times Notable Book, LA Times Book Prize finalist. Her 2008 novel “Unaccustomed Earth,” won the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award and her

second novel, “The Lowland” 2013 was a finalist for both the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Award for Fiction and Lahiri won the USD 50,000 DSC Prize for Literature. Lahiri explored Indian immigrant experience in America. Later, in 2011, Lahiri moved to Rome, Italy and her first novel in Italian, “Dove mi Trovo” and compiled 40 Italian short stories written by 40 different Italian writers and editted and translated the

“Penguin Book of Italian Short Stories.” Lahiri also translated some of her own writing and other authors from Italian to English. She was awarded the National Humanities Medal in 2014.

She has been a professor of creative writing at Princeton University since 2015.

marianne brandt

Marianna Brandt was a German painter, sculptor, photographer, metalsmith, and designer who studied at the Beaugaus art school in Weimar and later became the head of their Metall-Werkstatt (Metal Workshop) in Dessau in 1927. Brandt’s designs for household objects such as lamps, ashtrays and teapots are considered timeless. She also created photomontages.

Brandt became a student of Hungarian modern theorist and designer László Moholy-Nagy in the metals workshop. After leaving the Bauhaus for Berlin in 1929, Brandt worked for WAlter Gropius in his Berlin studio. She became the head of metal design at the Ruppel firm in Gotha until 1932. In 1939, she became a member of the Reichskulturkammer, the Nazi regime’s artist organization, however Brandt was never a member of the Nazi Party.

JR has the largest art gallery in the world. Thanks to his photographic collage technique, he exhibits his work free of charge on the walls of the whole world – attracting the attention of those who do not usually go to museums. As the creator of the 28 Millimeters Project, whch he started in and around Clinchy-Montfermeil in 2004 continued in the Middle East with Face 2 Face (2007), in Brazil and Kenya for Women Are Heroes (2008-

2011), the documentary for which was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010 (Critics’ Week). JR has created “infiltrating art.” His college work included the spectators taking part in his artistic creations. JR’s anonymity and lack of explanations accompanying his massive portraiture leaves him free to “forming the essence of his work.”

Eric Ripert was exposed to a duality of cuisinces, his birthplace of Antibes , France, and Andorra, a microscopic country just beyond the Spanish border where he moved as a young child. Ripert left home at 15 to attend culinary school in Perpignan. He moved to Paris at 17 and cooked at the legendary La Tour D’Argent before taking a position at a Michelin three-star restaurant Jamin. He fulfilled his military service then returned to serve

under Joel Robuchon as chef poissoner (fish cook). In 1989, Ripert worked under Jean-Louis Palladin as the sous-chef at Jean Louis in the Watergate Hotel. In 1991, Ripert moved to New York, working briefly as sous-chef to David Nouley before being recruitted as Le Bernadin’s chef by Maguy and Gilbert Le Coze. At just 29, in 1995, Ripert earned New York Times’ four star rating. Le Bernadin earned five consecutive four stars,

becoming the only restaurant to maintain it’s superior status for this long without ever dropping a star. La Bernadin’s 2011 redesign won a James Beard Award for “Best Restaurant Design” in 2012. In 1998 the James Beard Foundation titled Ripert the “Top Chef in New York City,” and in 2003, “Outstanding Chef of the United States.” In 2008 Ripert published On the Line, his second cookbook and in 2009, AVEC ERIC won many awards.

Hélène Binet (b. 1959) is a Swiss and French internationally acclaimed photographer based in London. Hélène Binet is commited to working with analogue, as opposed to digital photography. Carrying around heavy equiptment, expensive film, putting her head under the dark cloth at the back of a large-format camera, of composing the photograph with the upside down image it offers and developing it in a dark room.

Born to Swiss and French parents and brought up in Rome, Binet has been based for the past 30 years in north London. She touts the importance of Architecture in the part of growing up, to be touched by space and the history of space. She learned her techniaues of the tradein Rome’s Instutio Euroopeo di Design but she found their emphasis of fashion and consumer goods unsatisfying. She shot rehearsals in the Opera House.

In the mid-1980s in Milan and Venice, she met Bunschoten and Liveskind. Binet captured both Bunschoten’s The Collapse of Time, and Libeskind’s installation The House Without Walls. Binet barely spoke English and confessed to know nothing about architecture.Yet, the universal language of the struggle of the human being was evident in the narrative of building. In the UK, Binet photographed for Hadid and Zumthor’s Thermal Vals.

Sophia Amoruso is an American businesswoman known for founding Nasty Gal, an eBay store she launched in 2006 after developing a hernia and working a deadend job as the card swiper for an arts school. In 2015 Amoroso stepped down to focus on her GirlBoss mediaplatform, distancing herself from her brand.

In 2016 she was named one of the richest self-made woman in the world by Forbes. However, Nasty Gal filed for bankrupcy,

decimating her fortune. In a comeback, in 2017 Amoroso founded Girlboss Media, a company that creates millenial content for women of the generation to progress as professionals and personally. The autobiography she wrote in 2014, #GIRLBOSS was adapted into a television series of the namesake.

He played for University of Minnesota under under legendary Coach John Mariucci, where he tallied 45 points from 1957-59. From there, Herbie went on to play on several U.S. National and Olympic teams from 1962-70. Brooks got into coaching, taking over his alma mater, Minnesota, in 1972, where he led the losing Gophe

r Squad to winning an NCAA title just two years after. Brooks brought them three wins, the second title in 1976 and the third in 1979. Brooks boasted an impressive 175-100-20 record along the way. Brooks’ legacy is the fabled 1980 Olympic Team for the United States, dubbed the “Miracle on Ice,” it’d later be named as the best sporting event of the 20th century.

Oobah Butler created an imaginary London restaunt, The Shed at Dulwich, one of the most elite eateries in South London for about six months. Available only by reservation, the exclusive mood menu, for example “Yorkshire blue macaroni and cheese seasoned with bacon shavings and served in a 600TC Egyptian cotton bowl” titled Comfort. The Shed was a ruse, the hoax complete with fake reviews written by friends.

Butler, a culinary con artist and freelance writer for Vice UKthought up and executed the idea. He came up with the prank as a social expirament. Butler loved the idea of “people lusting after a non-existent space.” Once the Shed got really popular, they decided to open for one night only. They served ready meals, dressed as fancy food with actors pretending to love the food: “I wanted to recreate the same psychological space as TripAdvisor.”

35 years ago the 303 Gallery was established by owner and director Lisa Spellman. The namesake is both due to the address and in reference to Alfred Stieglitz’s “Intimate Gallergy,” the artists- collaborative in Room 303 of the Anderson Galleries building, dedicated to offering memorial encounters to progressive artists. When Spellman founded the gallery in college, she slept in the back of the exhibition space.

She had a number of high-profile artists build their foundations of their careers at the 303 Gallery. It’s a rare gallery that stays open for 30 years straight, particularly female-run.

Hans Ulrich Obrist (b. 1968, Zurich, Switzerland) is co-director of the Serpentine Galleries, London. Prior to this he was the Curator of the Musée d’ Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. He produced his first show, “World Soup” (The Kitchen Show) in 1991.

In 2014, he curated the Swiss Pavilion at the 14th International Architecture Biennale in Venice, where he presented “Lucius Burckhardt and Cedric Price--A stroll through a fun palace.”

The building was designed by architects Harzog&amp; de Meuron. In 2016, Obrist co-curated the Serpentine Galleries solo shows for Michael Craig-Martin, Simon Denny, Hilma af Klint and DAS INSTITUT. Obrist’s “Art of Handwriting” project is taking place on Instagram and is a protest against the disappearance of handwriting in the digital age.
