The Rosa Simon Music Fund now stands at about £5000 Named after our 3.5 year-old daughter who died in a tragic accident in June, the Fund aims to buy new instruments for the schools, playgroups, churches and registered child minders in the Hadleigh area, reflecting Rosa’s love of music and dancing. Thank you ever so much to the very many individuals and organisations who have so generously given to this Fund, including those fantastic people at the Hadleigh Thrift Shop who gave £500 and the Hadleigh Community Choir who donated £300! The photograph shows Rosa’s big sister Millie and father Paul receiving the cheque from Josie Read, treasurer of the Community Choir. We are trying to find out what the local demand is for specific instruments and will be sending out a questionnaire to as many schools, playgroups, churches and registered child minders as possible – as well as inviting them to a brief meeting in the early autumn – to find out what is needed. We will then be in a position to start buying the instruments!

Anyone wishing to contribute to the Fund is very welcome to do so. Cheques can be made out to and sent to: Hadleigh United Reformed Church.

Saturday 9th August some 70 former staff members of Angel Court Hadeigh came together to celebrate almost 50 years of quality care given to the elderly of Hadleigh and surrounding districts. Angel Court will be sadly missed by many as a long standing local residential home, where there has always been an outstanding caring professional team, with a great performance record, who held the respect from all other professionals within the caring field.

With the help and support from our local doctors and community nurses we were able to give unrivalled care for all those within our care for many years, thank you. A great time was had by all staff reminiscing the many happy times had working together, which hold a lot of special memories for us all.

Hadleigh & District Footpath Volunteers Our walk this month will be on Saturday September 13th. It will be a 10 mile walk from Claydon back to Hadleigh. We will travel by bus leaving Hadleigh Bus Station at 9.30am. (Car Park side). We will walk from Claydon to Hadleigh via Little Blakenham, Bramford, Flowton, Hintlesham, Aldham, and on to Hadleigh arriving back at about 3.00pm. This walk is 10 Miles in length, and is suitable for most walkers and older children.Your dog is welcome to join us, but must be under close control when passing livestock. Strong shoes or walking boots should be worn as some of the paths are wet, and rough in places. The Annual Porch Project Summer BBQ The Porch Project is Hadleigh’s local youth charity, engaging with over 450 young people between the ages of 11-20 through its social activities, learning and support programmes, school visits and street-based youth work . Over 350 local young people are registered with the project and regularly use the projects: • Evening drop-in centre, with recreational activities, hot food and tuck shop facilities • State of the art media and computer suite, with its homework and revision club, job search facilities and e-learning programmes • Additional support programmes such as counselling and mentoring The project needs to raise approximately £100,000 per year to provide all its support and activities free to local young people.

Hadleigh Library Friends Group Liz Trenow, best selling author of The Forgotten Seamstress will be at Hadleigh Library on Wednesday 24th September. Liz will be talking about her new book The Poppy Factory and promoting The Poppy Factory Charity which helps disabled veterens back to work and back to normal lives.

HMS Angel Court continued it's voyages, sometimes through sad times, but mostly through good.

The passengers were happy and so were the crew.

In 2012 new owners took over the Suffolk Fleet so HMS Angel Court sailed under a different flag.

In 2014 it became apparent that HMS Angel Court and Hawthorn were to be replaced with a new 5 star Cruise Liner, Asterbury Place.

The crew were in disarray, many jumped ship, but many remained.

Angel Court sailed through stormy waters, it took on water, was prone to listing from side to side, there was the frequent sounds of crashing waves on rocks, the smell of seaweed, the squawking of gulls.

It was only the frantic running of the crew, which included shipmates Jenny, the Sue's, Sharon, the Anne's, Vicki, Teresa, Alison and others, from one side of the ship to the other that kept her on an even keel. Such was their success that no one else realised the difficult waters HMS Angel Court was in, not even Lou the Ships Master.

During this time the below decks boiler keeper Phil Crowfoot was made Captain, his contribution was to run around with the rest of the crew cracking stupid jokes to one and all so when seas were really rough everyone just laughed.

Eventually, when HMS Asterbury Place was ready for commissioning Pirates from older vessels of the same fleet started to plunder the goods on board Angel Court. It was carnage.

Luckily the remaining crew survived, and HMS Angel Court was steered to a secure mooring, some shipmates retired, others moved on to other ships, some to Asterbury Place.

Lifeboats were a frequent sight in the waters as they ferried passengers and crew to various parts of the globe On the 4th August 2014 Captain Crowfoot secured Angel Court in a dry dock at Hadleigh and handed the vessel back to its original owners.

Angel Court had completed its final journey, the passengers and crew were safe, it was time to pull up the draw bridge, break out the rum rations and celebrate journey’s end.

Bildeston History Quarterly: Issue 12 (Autumn 2014) Bildeston History Quarterly welcomes the first of a series of articles by Peter Hubbard of Bath. He spent his childhood in the village and now shares his memories of the people and places around him in the 1930’s. Peter’s family lived in the house with the first floor bay window overlooking Market Place so he was certainly in the centre of things.

Views of Market Place are included with occupiers of houses and proprietors of shops identified. All the guests are wearing their best clothes and two of the ladies have cloche-style hats. Do you know who the happy couple are?

‘Tales from our neighbours’ tells the story behind the village sign at Kettlebaston, one of the first to be erected in the area. Occupiers of the nearest house have had several unwarranted knocks on their front door over the years as the style of the sign resembles many pub signs. Thanks go to Christine Coe of Chattisham for the loan of her family papers concerning George and Susanna Pearsons who had an island off the coast of Australia named after them and, for eighteen years from 1819, ran a shop in Bildeston Market Place. With further research, it has been possible to identify the shop and also trace the endeavours of their thirteen children.

The series ‘Lords of the manor’ now comes to the period 1765 to 1814, when the Brand family of Polstead Hall were lords. Read about William Beale Brand’s complicated will, how he directed that the manor house Bildeston Hall and its accompanying lands were sold, which left his brother Thomas only the lordship here. Also how volumes on manorial descent and authorities on Suffolk heraldry have failed to mention Thomas, although his name clearly appears in Bildeston’s manorial court books. Neville Whittell of Hadleigh has kindly responded to an appeal for information about Bildeston men who served in the First World War. During a visit to the editor, Neville loaned photographs for copying and told of his family story that cousins Frederick Whittell and Harry Whittell volunteered together for military service in 1914 and that both men returned safely. More research has taken the story of the Whittell family in Bildeston back to 1737 and possibly turned up the reason why Fred called his home Vimy Ridge.

Howard with Teresa at the Saracens Head You will remember that I do like to make a visit to the Norfolk Broads at some time during the Summer months. Frank pulled up at the boat yard of H E Hipperson (Tel. 01787 379036) at Gillingham Dam in Beccles.

There was much excitement as my mother and I alighted and a trolley was brought round for cold boxes, picnic hampers, leather holdalls, mooring stakes, mallets and cleft sticks. We were taken to our day boat.

Frank doesn’t sail well and so he stayed with the car and the boat was “self-drive” for us. We meandered past reeds and courting couples, herons and water voles and tied up for our coffee. We enjoyed our lunch in a quiet cove on the way to Oulton Broad. We chugged back into the boat yard as the clock struck five and Frank had the motor car running so that we could purr back through the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk.

Let me tell you about the Saracens Head at Newton Green Sudbury CO10 0QJ (Tel. 01787 379036) where the proprietor is Teresa and I enjoy dinner from time to time. Teresa has a varied menu at reasonable prices and an ample frontage. Teresa’s father is renowned for his marrows which Teresa serves stuffed with mince beef and covered with cheese along with mixed vegetables and new potatoes. That is an item on the £6 menu. The dressed Cromer crab with salads from the salad bar has been a favourite of mine over these warmer days. Why not give Teresa a call – tell her that I sent you.

I know that you were all delighted to have news of Frank and Maria. I made mention of Frank’s plums which have now dropped off and were sliced on top of my breakfast. Maria tells me that she is looking forward to lifting Frank’s King Edwards.

Banks will not lend on a property that has been owned by the Seller for less than six months. These are rules that stem from the Money Laundering Regulations. One would not be able to mortgage a property that had been owned for less than six months. There will also be problems for a buyer in a sub-sale who is unlikely to be able to obtain a mortgage. There are so many issues that could arise in a conveyancing transaction and fortunately my 29 years of experience keeps us on the straight and narrow.

The Boule-in’s Autumn Fruits…

Cathy Bullen, proprietor of Bildeston’s stylish French store The Boule-in, is not concerned by the lack of fruit on her quince tree “I planted it last autumn to celebrate our first ‘Fete du Coing’ Exhibition” she says “and although it would have been nice to have some fruit from it this year the tree looks healthy and has given the garden great structure.” Cathy really doesn’t need to worry as her charming garden is already full of structure – obelisks, plant supports and French garden urns sit happily beside rustic buckets and enormous vintage watering-cans. The ‘fruits’ of her latest trip to Provence have been very bountiful – “we’ve had a fantastic time sourcing new stock for this year’s ‘Fete du Coing’ Exhibition (Saturday 20th until Sunday 28th September): It is always such fun as you never know what you will find when you set off! We’ve been really lucky and have found some wonderful and unusual pieces for both the house and garden – some lovely textiles, glassware and furniture. We’ve also had fun driving our large new van which has allowed us to bring back some much larger pieces of stock – and of course we took the opportunity to join in the ‘Fete du Coing’ celebrations back in our old village where the quince trees were heavy with fruit!

Lavenham Traffic Concerns Over the years there have been concerns expressed, and investigations, regarding traffic related issues within the village. These include parking, speeding of vehicles through the village, HGV traffic (especially in Water Street), pedestrian safety etc. This has lead to a number of suggestions, but no lasting solutions have been implemented.

The Lavenham Parish Council in response to the continuing concerns has set up a Working Party to consider and produce proposals in response to the above traffic issues and to prepare an implementation plan for agreed solutions. Longer term strategic proposals, where appropriate, will be incorporated in the Neighbourhood Plan which is currently being developed.

The Working Party will consider past proposals and petitions from parishioners and will be consulting with the bodies with responsibility for road and traffic management within the village and surrounding area. It may be that you will be approached by members of the Working Party for information or views on the issues and your cooperation will be welcomed.

Shortest but hottest Sponsored Walk ever On Thursday 18 September Anita Postle from Hadleigh will be joining 29 other likeminded people at Ickworth House near Bury St Edmunds to take part in the Suffolk Firewalk.

Anita, who works for local Accountants Walter Wright and the other volunteers will be walking 20 feet over hot coals as part of BBC Radio Suffolk’s 8 Days A Week Appeal to raise £250,000 for Suffolk Family Carers to buy, equip and run a mobile Family Carers Centre to take their amazing services across rural Suffolk to the doorsteps of Family Carers of all ages.

The Mobile Family Carers Centre will • Deliver information, advice and guidance and provide a place where Family Carers can be listened to, supported and directed according to their needs.

• Provide a space to deliver health and wellbeing activities e.g. complementary therapies and simple health checks.

• Host group activities giving Family Carers a break from their caring role.

• Provide a ‘base’ for other activities, whether these be day trips or regular Family Carer support groups in rural areas where Family Carers may otherwise feel isolated and alone.

The Porch Project needs a volunteer administrator The Porch Project is Hadleigh’s local youth charity, engaging with over 450 young people between the ages of 11-20 through its social activities, learning and support programmes, school visits and street-based youth work. Over 350 local young people are registered with the project and regularly use the projects: • Evening drop-in centre, with recreational activities, hot food and tuck shop facilities • State of the art media and computer suite, with its homework and revision club, job search facilities and e-learning programmes • Additional support programmes such as counselling and mentoring We have three paid staff and the rest of our team are volunteers We are looking for someone to help support our Communications and Fundraising Officer and our Youth Work Co-ordinator during the day. We are looking for someone to make and take phone calls, write letters, type up policy documents, audit our registrations, set up a filing system and update our news, Twitter and Facebook sections on our new web site (training will be provided for this). We need someone who is organised, can occasionally work on their own, can present the project in a professional manner to external contacts and who has Microsoft Windows IT skills.

This role would suit somebody who is retired, or somebody who is looking for work and wants to put some experience on their CV. You would need to undergo a DBS check. We are a nice bunch of people to work with and would be happy to talk to interested individuals about the amount of time they would be available to help us.

I am spending a good deal of my time this summer thinking about how savings can be found to help the County Council to balance its books over the next three years. We are only half way through the process of cutting over ÂŁ200m from our budget due to cuts in grant funding from the Government and increased demand for our services. Looking for savings is not a particularly pleasant task, and so it is good to be able to report two good news stories this month.

I recently visited the new Energy from Waste facility at Great Blakenham for the first time. I was worried that I would not be able to find it, but there was certainly no danger of that. It certainly presents a major feature in the landscape. The facility is now in its commissioning stage, most of the construction work on the site having been completed. In addition to waste from Suffolk, SCC recently entered into an agreement with Norfolk to take 40,000 tons per annum of their waste. This is a good deal for both sides. We will benefit from greater economies of scale and Norfolk will save money due to not having to pay landfill charges. Once the Waste facility, which, it is anticipated, will be officially opened next year, is fully operational only about 3% of Suffolk’s waste will go to landfill. This is not just cost effective for the County, but also good for the environment The beginning of August marked the second anniversary of the transfer of the county’s library services to the Suffolk Libraries Provident Society. Freed from the ownership of the County Council (although we still give grant support) our libraries have in general gone from strength to strength in their new independent guise. Representatives from other councils have visited Suffolk to see what has been achieved. Successes include the installation of WIFI into all libraries in the County and a greatly enhanced offering of e books and free legal music downloads. We have also twice been able to run the Suffolk Reading Challenge for children, and I am looking forward to going to Lavenham Library in September to give certificates to children who have taken part in our area.

Polstead Art Group Art Exhibition 2014 Our art exhibition was more successful than ever this year so a very big “thank you” to all who came along. It’s also encouraging to read the comments in the visitors book and we are grateful to all who took the time to write them. It also gives great pleasure to us to see so many friends meeting and enjoying the exhibition as a social event, some having come quite a distance. ‘Wall of Death’ at the White Hart, Boxford Birthplace of the legendary ‘Wall of Death’ rider George ‘Tornado’ Smith, and burial place of his companion, the twelve stone lioness, Briton. The White Hart has had quite an extraordinary past; and it is from this historic hostelry that the story of a British eccentric begins, one might go so far as to call it the birthplace of extreme sports. Indeed, I cannot think of many sports today that could rival the extremity of stunt motorcyclists riding a 20 foot drum, at 90 degree angles with a lioness in tow!

After stumbling upon the sport in a fairground, Smith brought the ‘Wall of Death’ to the site of the old Victorian brewery at The White Hart during the 1930’s, and set out to entertain the locals of Boxford with his daredevil stunts.

This September, The White Hart welcomes the stunt motorcyclists of the Wall of Death back to the site of their historic beginnings and devilish predecessor.

The weekend of the 26th September will be one for the books, with outrageous stunts, great food, activities for the kids and live music to boot. Whilst in times gone by The White Hart has been somewhat of a magnet for talent and eccentricity, in its more recent history we might say that the apple has not fallen too far from the tree. This unassuming village pub has been a hub of activity over the last decade, and home to many a talented musician. In fact there is a running joke amongst the locals that the staff of ‘The Hart’ have to boast some extracurricular talent in order to qualify for a job. Currently exhibiting artwork by their extremely talented head waitress, Michelle Wood, and hosting open mic events once a month, with larger music festivals in the summer, all of which are organised and headlined by bar manager, and musician Nic Keeble. ‘The Hart’ truly does take talent to another level with spades of ambition and drive simmering just beneath the woodwork of this charming and unheralded local inn.

Nic Keeble, in association with The White Hart presents 'The Granary Sessions'. The recently renamed open mic event which takes place every first Sunday of the month gets its namesake from the old granary towards the back of the pub, original practice space to local band 'This Boy Wonders'; who gained success at reading and leads festival with BBC radio one Introducing.

Sadly the band has dispersed and the members have moved on in different directions, however, the old granary with its musical heritage has been an inspiration to current events within the pub. The Granary Sessions relaunches on Sunday 3rd August from 8:30 - 11pm, welcoming musicians of all abilities.

The Hart's open mic evening boasts entertainment, charm and a friendly atmosphere. This is a relaxed night which is as much about individual performances as it is about everyone getting stuck in together. In fact, some of the best evenings have come about when musicians who met for the first time on the night have mucked in together with a bit of improv.

A Very British Evening Saturday 20th September The choir is performing in the World War I commemorative concert in St Mary’s church on Saturday 20th September at the request of the event organiser Fred Bryer. We will be singing a selection of World War II songs and leading a World War I sing-along with the audience. The evening is intended to be both entertaining and solemn and will raise funds for the British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. Hadleigh Community Choir is delighted to have been asked to participate in this special event and we look forward to seeing you there.

Sunshine Glorious Sunshine Summer is here and living in the East of the country we are so lucky with the weather especially at this time of year.

What a fantastic summer it has been so far and those of you who have installed solar PV will be seeing a daily generation of around 20kWh per day which means you are probably getting all your electricity free. A Hive of Activity at Orchard Barn This summer we have been buzzing, with lots of projects completed or under way. We have run many courses, including timber framing, making and using lime render, natural building and making a shave horse to take home. We are also progressing well with our gate hurdles for the Access to the Orchard project, and our raised vegetable beds are very productive, with a huge crop of broad beans, thanks to our home-made compost.

We are passionate about maintaining our national heritage, especially in the form of our historic buildings. To this end we are again running our Care and Repair for your Traditional Building course, specifically designed to help owners to look after their precious homes, forming as they do part of our community heritage. This 3-day course will run in September (22nd to 24th) and is suitable for not only home owners but also surveyors, builders, conservation officers, architects and anyone with an interest in traditional building techniques. We will cover repairs to timber frame, wattle and daub, lathe and plaster, brick, flint and clay lump, as well as how to tackle the issue of damp in the Heather harvesting the home. Our tutors are experienced broad beans craftspeople who will give talks as well as helping with hands-on practice. This will give you the knowledge and skills to help you undertake authentic repairs, or be more knowledgeable when dealing with your builder. No previous experience is needed, and it will help you to avoid costly mistakes, undertake sympathetic repairs and preserve the value of your traditional building. This is a selection of comments from previous students on the course, indicating what they learned: • ‘Knowledge to evaluate building repairs and their construction’ • ‘A range of hands-on experience to give a useful understanding’ • ‘Gained much knowledge and insight into all aspects…as an owner/maintainer of an historic building. Leslie Olive, The Sailing Conductor, writes: A local man (Tuddenham St Mary) I once taught as a schoolboy, Martin Soons, is currently doing a circumnavigation of England, Wales and Scotland in his boat.

Individuals are sponsoring him in aid of the Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra, which is a registered charity. I am currently also on the boat, which as I write has reached Kinlochbervie in the far north of Scotland, having set off from Leslie Olive and Martin Soons Shotley (opposite Harwich, as you know - so all very Suffolk) some weeks ago. Martin is doing the circumnavigation in spite of having a deep vein thrombosis - a circumnavigation on Warfarin.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 Summer may be over but we are still basking in the afterglow of our annual Fete and Fun Dog Show. My human friend, Sandra, called it the happiest day of the year as the garden filled with friends, both old and new. Several animals were reserved and have now started a new life in their ‘forever’ homes. The Ace Agility and Fun Dog Show was enjoyed by animals and humans alike and some of our previously rescued dogs joined the SESAW class. Chloe the Cocker Spaniel was justifiably proud of herself when she took first place. I’m glad I didn’t have to choose, Mum said they all looked like winners to her. Tails wagged, visitors chatted, the band, ‘Jazz Galore’, entertained and just over £2500 was raised on the day. You know what I’m going to say next! Thank you to everyone for making Sunday 27th July such a success.

Our next event is our Garage Sale, Saturday and Sunday 6th and 7th September starting at 10am - call in early to grab a bargain. If you want to make some extra money for yourself/Christmas, book a table at our Grand Table Top Sale in the Old School, Long Melford on Sunday 12th October.

Residents and many relatives participated in preparing the gardens for the big day. Relatives made all the cakes, residents went strawberry picking, staff created savoury bites and animal shaped jellies. The weather was just perfect for a cream tea with all the trimmings. Staff dressed as waiters and waitresses serving old fashioned lemonade, ginger beer and dandelion and burdock to quench their thirst. Over £200 was raised on the day with a raffle. This is the start of a big fundraising event for the home to purchase a mini bus.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You I wanted to write this message to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who donated money, took part in the quiz, bought raffle tickets, and joined in with a couple of competitions, and to everyone who turned up on the night to show their support for myself and my Auntie Lynne (Bill’s wife) as we strived to raise as much as possible for the Woolverstone Wish charity. It was gobsmacking to see so many people turn up, and to see how much money was raised was absolutely overwhelming. In total, £1,164 was raised for the charity, which I am thrilled about as I didn’t expect (in all my wildest dreams) to reach £1000!

I also need to say a special thanks to everybody who donated prizes for the raffle as without these donations, we certainly would not have raised as much as we did.

This event was a chance for me to do something to allow us all to honour the memory of a man who was not just an uncle, a godfather, a brother, a son, a husband or a friend, but an inspiration to many. The way he fought his illness until it got the better of him was admirable, and he should be remembered for being a truly brave human being. Like everyone else that knew him, he is sorely missed and is in our thoughts every day.

Thank you again for all the support received and for coming along, it was an unbelievable night!

An AONB is an area of abundant wildlife and great habitats, formed by unique, beautiful countryside with a surrounding community population of villages and towns that is passionately protected to maintain its dynamic quality for the future.

The Dedham Vale and Stour Valley has been designated as an AONB for its distinctive lowland river landscape; famously epitomised by the artist John Constable – a notable area often described as "Constable Country” - set within the broader beauty of the Stour Valley. Active encouragement of enhancement and careful conservation of the area's natural vitality - both present and in the future - is a core value of the project, as well as a passion for its marvellous wildlife. The area is cared for by 26 organisations all working in unison and striving to maintain its sheer beauty, and a management plan is in place to help focus its activities.

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre The AGM and BBQ is the final event of our year. This is a time to report, reflect and show appreciation to so many people who make The Centre’s work possible. A full report on The Centre’s year was given by the Chairman Jan Derbyshire, the breadth of the activities undertaken is staggering. Amongst the statistics reported were that we gave 2344 rides and carriage drives to 132 people ranging from 4 to 50 years old, approximately 80 each week. These figures are passed to the RDA National organization, our umbrella body. A strong indication of the dedication and belief in our work is shown by the number of service awards given to volunteers. This year thirteen awards were presented to volunteers for 5, 10, 15 and 20 years service to The Centre.

25 and 30 years service are recognized by RDA National and we have several people in this category. Our own In House award of Volunteer of the Year went to Rob Southgate who heads up the splendid team of five men in charge of maintenance at The Centre. We also submitted Louise Kemp’s name to RDA National to be considered as an RDA National Volunteer of the Year. The business over it was time to enjoy companionship and the delicious BBQ food provided and served by the Management Committee, a tangible way to show appreciation to our dedicated volunteers. Although riders do not come to The Centre in the summer holidays, the Carriage Driving still takes place, taking advantage of the good weather. As well as their work as RDA horses/ ponies they have able bodied riders to help them keep fit and motivated.

During the summer break six of the horses/ponies stay at The Centre where they are looked after by a team of volunteers, the remaining six go to holiday homes. Ebony is dusted down and rested. We all return refreshed in September following the school holidays. How long our horses and ponies work with us depends on them. Lyn our stable manager knows when it is time for them to retire. Holly has done sterling work for years and has a good home to retire to, she will be greatly missed by riders and helpers, but we have a good photographic record of her time with us.

Replacements are hard to find, we are looking for a 13hh ‘teenager’, fit and with a good temperament. Can you help? Fundraising is always on the calendar. We begin with the Sponsored Ride on the 14th September beginning and ending at The Centre. Riders enjoy 15 miles through the beautiful Brett and Box valleys with a half way stop at the Polstead Cock. Interest Free Credit Option Now Available As we discussed in last month’s edition, many people we speak to are experiencing high levels of cold calls offering them ‘Free Solar’ which actually, when looked into, leads to an expensive installation being put up for them, and being paid for through a 10 year finance agreement with some leading high street banks. Kersey Mill Newsletter After a beautiful summer the harvest draws to an end for another year, it’s interesting looking back at how in times gone by harvest would have been such a very busy time for so many people, perhaps we take food production a little bit for granted today. When the mill was in full production back in the mid 1800’s farming and food production was a major occupation for many, labour intensive and very hard work. The mill being a hive of activity and would have had a major part to play in producing fine flour. The millers wife would have made the bread from the freshly ground flour. To the rear of the Mill House is the “Bake House” which still has the original Dutch bread oven. Faggots of sticks would have been lit and left to burn, the ashes raked out and the bread would have been baked in the red hot brick oven. A lot of work was achieved using hand tools or horse driven implements and when it came to milling it was water or wind before the introduction of steam and engine power.

A census taken in 1871 lists the owner of Kersey Mill at the time as Benjamin Mason who farmed 280 acres and had 16 men and 2 boys working for him.

Benjamin Mason died 18th May 1935 leaving an estate of £435.

A local book titled “ Kersey Within Living Memory”. An Oral history compiled by Anne Maltby with an introduction by Ruby Ling is a fascinating insight into local life in and around the area over the years. Within this book there are many recollections of life, how it was in the early to late 1900’s, with many recalling their memories of life on the farm; Claude Munson recalls: “My father was second horseman at Trickers Farm, and the blacksmith was a-running then at the forge. The horsemen had to keep the horses going- even if it rained. The men would put corn sacks over their heads to keep some of the wet off and they’d just keep walking behind the horses, guiding the plough. But they loved it- it was a real skill that job. There are many recollections giving a taste of how life was and of how they just got on with it. There are many wonderful memories within this book and most certainly worth every penny, printed and available from Keith Avis Hadleigh. Another book with similar tales I recently read, written

by George Ewert Evans, The Horse in the Furrow, again wonderful tales of life as it was, the author has written several books that recall life in the country in years gone by.

If you find yourself in Stowmarket do visit the The Museum of East Anglian Life, it is a Museum that specialises in presenting the agricultural history of East Anglia through a mixture of exhibits and living history demonstrations, along with many other attractions recordings made by George Ewart Evens can be heard. It’s also home to Alton Water Mill. This was built in the 19th Century and originally situated in Holbrook. It was dismantled and rebuilt at the Museum in 1973 and is now a working museum piece.

Farming and milling was a very hard, dirty and at times, a dangerous occupation, we previously recalled the tale of a tragic accident that occurred at the mill in c1845 - Reported in the Hadleigh Herald: SHOCKING ACCIDENT A melancholy and distressing accident occurred at Kersey Water Mill, near Hadleigh, on Wednesday morning last, which terminated fatally. A youth named Leech, 14 years of age, had only the previous Monday entered the service of Mr Mason, of the above mill as an apprentice, having previously been a considerable time in a wind mill. The poor boy was left alone in the mill, and is supposed to have been looking down at the great wheel in the pit, and overbalanced himself, and then fell between the cogs of the wheels. In consequence of the machinery having stopped, Mr Mason looked about to ascertain the cause, and found the poor boy between the wheels, with his heels uppermost. When taken out, the thumb of one hand was discovered to have been torn off, and the knuckles at the wrist lay bare: what state the body was in we could not ascertain, as an inquest had not been held when this report was written: death, however, was, doubtless, instantaneous.

Restoration work continues at the mill. With a fresh coat of white paint to the rear and side, we are currently working on repairing and repainting the windows. We recently had the pleasure of Suffolk Mills garden party, sadly the weather was not kind. There was laughter and joy on hearing tales, stories and anecdotes recalled on the day. Whatfield Carpet Bowls Club - September Fayre We are holding a September Fayre at Whatfield Village Hall on Saturday 13th September from 2 - 4 pm. All the proceeds will be shared between the Bowls Club and the Suffolk Family Carers which is a really worthwhile charity, helping people to live fuller lives. BBC Battle Bertha in Ride London An amazing 32 members of the Boxford Bike Club managed to complete this year’s Prudential Ride London cycling sportive held on the 10th August. The ride, now in it’s second year, saw 24,000 cyclists set out on the route which led them from the start at the Olympic park through the Surrey hills and back to the finish in front of Buckingham Palace.

Unfortunately hurricane Bertha meant that the weather conditions were nothing less than horrendous. The riders faced torrential rain and high winds, which in turn meant that the Trevor Crisell and Ian Fovargue at the finish with their medals. organisers were forced to shorten the course, taking out two steep descents of Leith hill and Box Hill. The shortened 86 mile course was no less challenging for the riders than the normal 100 mile route, as the roads literally disappeared under a sea of water and the 40 mph gusts of wind threatened to knock them off their bikes. The crowds along the course were amazing and certainly helped the riders in their efforts. Thankfully all of the Boxford riders completed the treacherous course safely, in times ranging from just over 4 hours to 71/2 hours. Members also raised considerable amounts of money for their nominated charities which included Macmillan Cancer Support and Epilepsy Research UK. From Chernobyl Childrens Life Line

On the evening of Friday August 1st August we held our leaving party for the children, Hosts and Supporters at the Cedars hotel in Stowmarket. The children performed a concert for which they had been practising hard and then went on to enjoy a disco especially geared towards them. Everyone who attended had a great time and Sunday 3rd August saw the return to Belarus of the 18 children who had been staying with families in the local areas for the last four weeks. Although a few tears were shed at departure the children were soon cheerfully looking forward to being reunited with their families once more and sharing the many happy memories they take with them.

Not only must we thank our Host families for their work in this project but also the many people who support us throughout the year, raising funds to enable us to bring the children and providing sponsored outings and events for them whilst they are here, giving their time free of charge, providing valuable dental and optical services free of charge, collecting clothing, donating medicines to take home and many other items which all benefit either these children or those at home in Belarus.

Unfortunately the children still suffer with the same terrible dental problems caused by their poor diet and living conditions, this year saw a total of 51 extractions and 42 fillings within the group and all carried out on the same day! This is the worst we have ever experienced.

Our special thanks must go to Beestons Coaches of Hadleigh who gave the children the most fantastic day out in London atop a double decker coach complete with toilet and DVD player! This was a real trip of a lifetime for the children who generally regard London as the Capital of the world and will also be a great aid to them during their English lessons as London is a topic that is covered extensively. There are many other supporters whom I have never met but who continue to help us in the background year on year, it seems like only yesterday we started this group but it has now been seven years with over 150 children having been brought to the Mid Suffolk area for recuperation health breaks. So many local people have contributed to our cause and supported us in many ways with donations and gifts for the children and via our Charity Shop. It is not possible to mention everyone here but without you the children would not have had the wonderful time they have had, this is appreciated more than you will know.

We are especially pleased to report that three of the children have now received Sponsorship from local people through our Family Support Program.

These children have been chosen by their Hosts Families or others who have met them during their visit and will receive a sum of money each month to help them. The Sponsors have the reassurance that they know exactly who the money is going to and we will assist in giving progress reports each time we visit the area.

Hadleigh & District Flower Club - On The Move After many years at the Beaumont School Hall (where we were very well looked after) we have decided to move back into the centre of Hadleigh. Our first meeting at the United Reformed Church will be on Tuesday 14th October at 7.30pm. Hadleigh & District Garden Club First of all, congratulations to Carole for successfully getting fifty members and friends of the club to Barnsdale Gardens and back, without any hitches. Many thanks for all that organisation Carole. Many of us had been intending to visit the much publicised gardens of the late Geoff Hamilton, one of televisions first gardening gurus, for years. It is an eleven acre site consisting of thirty nine individual gardens in which he was able to demonstrate various gardening techniques and approaches to managing the smaller gardens of post war Britain. This was a huge challenge for anyone and it must have been truly spectacular in its hay-day, although by general consensus seemed to have a slightly neglected feel and appearance, but possibly this was due to the inevitable seasonable problems of a problem year, weather wise.

A terrific day out with lovely weather, thanks Carole. The next meeting is on Monday 8th September 7.30pm in the Town Hall, Mr Micheal Perry from Thompson and Morgan Seeds will be taking about their products. The competition is three tomatoes.

Come and explore the history of the last 100 years in Burstall through the stunning medium of flower arranging. St. Mary's Church, Burstall, will be transformed by the residents of Burstall to illustrate the last century with a wide array of beautiful arrangements; these will include the lost landmarks of Burstall, clubs and organisations and historical events. The festival will run over the weekend of 11 - 12 October 2014. To accompany the displays, there will be a Church history available.

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts Some years ago I inherited 3 stone sinks. I like alpine plants and sinks provide a good way of growing some of them, so 2 of the sinks were put by my Summer House, and planted up with alpines, and the third one was sited by my greenhouse to be planted up with a variety of small plants. I included one plant of erigeron karvinskianus (Mexican fleabane). This is a low growing perennial daisy which flowers for months on end. It makes a lovely show, but it will seed around in cracks, and so could become a bit of nuisance. The two planted up with alpines have been good for several years, but now need overhauling. Some alpines have died, some have grown too big and are crowding out other plants, and some weeds have got established and need getting out. September is a good month to overhaul or plant alpines in a sink.

If you are going to plant up a trough or other container with alpines remember that it will need very good drainage. The trough must have a drainage hole that you cover with broken clay pots. The object is to allow good drainage, but stop the soil from washing out. In the bottom you need a layer of coarse grit, and then you need to fill the rest of the space up to about an inch below the top with soil to which extra grit has been added. 2 parts soil to 1 part grit is about right. You then plant your plants, and then top dress the top surface with more grit.

There are an enormous range of plants that will grow well in troughs. The simplest are the sedums (stonecrops) and sempervivum (house leeks), and plants from these species would make a good start before moving on to something more exotic and challenging.

This mostly fell in the second half of the month. The 3 monthly total at the end of July was 164.6 mm (6.5") which is slightly higher than the average. In July the maximum temperature was 28 Cel (82F) the minimum temperature was 8 Cel (46F) both of which are typical. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 15 Cel (59F), which is typical for mid August, but has dropped back from the July value due to the cooler weather.

Hints By September most annuals will be past their best, so we have to rely on the late flowering summer perennials like michaelmas daisies, and sedums to provide the floral display supported by half hardy perennials like dahlias and a second flush on some of the roses. In all cases it is worth cutting dead flowers off as this promotes more flowers.

September is the month to buy Spring flowering bulbs. If you want to have them flowering indoors for Christmas they need to be planted immediately. To be successful the bulbs have to make good roots in advance of sending up their flower spikes. To do this they need to be kept quite cool after planting, and in the dark. This is not easy in a modern house. One could bury the planted pots in the garden, but if the bulbs are being grown in bulb fibre in pots with no drainage holes they are likely to get too wet. I have used the attic, but then you do need to remember to water them occasionally.

September is a good time for taking cuttings of plants that you want to increase. The range of possibilities is wide. Three inch lengths of shoots that have grown this year, and are non flowering will work well for a lot of plants.

September is also a good time to give your lawn some loving care with a feed, and some raking to remove dead material.

Point to point and Eventing in One Sponsored Ride A full day of horse riding fun through Constable country will take place on the Essex/Suffolk border this September in aid of the Horse Rescue Fund and other local charities.

On September 7th 2014, Bildeston based EquinEd are holding its third annual sponsored horse ride and this year will include a huge equine car-boot.

Riders will be able to choose from two courses, based on their ability. The first course is for more experienced riders, consisting of over 11 invigorating miles of off-road tracks and fields, including a small amount of road hacking which will lead to the Higham Race Track. EquinEd has kindly been given permission for participants to ride upon the Higham race track itself, before they return to Stratford Hills and complete an optional schooling round of cross county. The second course is a 4.5mile hack through the countryside, designed for beginners and those still on the lead reign. This will be taking place on off-road tracks and fields.

On site will be first aid facilities, a photographer, and an on call vet and farrier.

Stewards will be placed at intervals around the course for safety. Organiser and MD at EquinEd, Shaun Moffat said, “This is an amazing opportunity for anyone that loves riding, regardless of their age or ability. Last year saw record entries and we expect 2014 to be even bigger. We expect a great atmosphere with lots of people riding out through beautiful countryside and of course the chance for a good canter on Higham Race Track.”

New Season Ahead for Hadleigh Table Tennis Club Hadleigh have again entered two teams in the competitive Ipswich and District League. Hadleigh “A” will again play in Division 1, where they finished in a respectable mid-table position last season. The team will be aiming for a top half spot in the new season. The “Owls” team who will be operating in Division 3 have unfortunately lost several players from last season’s team. Rupert Pyett remains, and will be joined by ex-player, Alan Middleton. This team will require at least another two players in order to compete in the League.

Hadleigh cricket club continue to supply players for the Suffolk sides Nick Bigg and Dom Manthorpe were involved in the two day ECB championship game against Norfolk u17's which ended in a high scoring draw.

Batting first Norfolk were all out for 353, Nick finishing with figures of 8 overs 0 maidens 31 runs for 1 wicket, a dropped catch costing him a second wicket. Dom finishing with figures of 13 overs 1 maiden 42 runs for 3 wickets, two dropped catches costing him a five wicket haul. Nick wasn't required to bat and Dom made 67 from 150 balls to enable Suffolk to reach 284 runs.

Hadleigh Sunday first team player, Matt Wearing and Dom Manthorpe have been selected for the under 19 one day cup game against the Cambridgeshire development side and Dom's recent county form has seen him rewarded by his inclusion in the Suffolk first team squad for their three day MCCA championship game away against Norfolk.

“Young Restaurant Team of the Year” national award for Stoke by Nayland Hotel – and special dining treats offered to celebrate!

Stoke by Nayland Hotel Golf & Spa is delighted to announce that two of their young chefs and a waiter led

by Executive Head Chef MCGB Alan Paton, have won the national award of Young Restaurant Team of the Year 2014. The competition is run prior to the Skills for Chefs conference, held in Sheffield for the last The Stoke by Nayland winning team receives seventeen years. Last their award year the Stoke by Nayland team came second and won the Best Menu Award, but this year took overall top spot and fought off some stiff competition which included last year’s winners. The winning team were Martin Lane and Jamie Mallett, both talented Chefs de Partie and Jack Butler who excelled as a star Waiter – all 21 years of age.

The menu brief was to create a three course menu inspired by Eastern Mediterranean cuisine and “the spice route”. Part of the brief was also to include a reception drink, matching wines and hot beverages to finish. The sub cultures of these regions also had to be taken into account. This provided the team with a hefty task to take on, especially considering that they were working on all of this at the same time as fulfilling the daily requirements of their full time roles at Stoke by Nayland.

The winning menu was : Grilled Red Mullet fillet, Almond Tarator, Beetroot Sugar, Kadaifi Apricots and Za’atar Cucumber; Cutlet and Loin of “Nedging Lamb”, Ras el Hanout Beluga Lentils, Garlic and Onion Seed Kebab, Lamb and Pomegranate Courgette Flower, Carrot and Cumin Puree and Lamb Fat Gravy; Dark Chocolate and Aleppo Pepper Dome, Orange Semifreddo, Yoghurt and Cardamom Cream, Pistachio Granola Their prize is a four day tour of Istanbul and time at MSA – The Culinary Academy of Istanbul. The judges of the competition are all highly respected chefs – Andrew Bennett MCGB, Executive Head Chef of The Sheraton Park Lane Hotel, Paul Gayler MBE MCGB recently Executive Head Chef of The Lanesborough Hotel, John McGeever MCGB Executive Chef, St Edmund Hall Oxford

Newton Green’s unique tribute to World Record Holder A unique tribute to the world’s longest serving golf professional has been unveiled in the form of a course starter’s shelter.

Arthur Davey was professional at Newton Green Golf Club for 60 years, during which time he operated from a small shed near the first tee. The old wooden building is now rotting to pieces under a canopy of ivy, but members have clubbed together, and with aid of grant support, raised £5,000 to build a replica as a starter’s shelter.

It was officially opened by club president Michael Oliver, whose late father and grandfather had been presidents during the Davey era, which ended in 1979.

Peter Philpott, Jean Davey When he retired, Davey was and Michael Oliver made an honorary associate member of the Professional Golfers’ Association. He died, aged 97 in 1992, and is buried in the village church yard at Newton, which is three miles from the Suffolk market town of Sudbury. Among guests at the ceremony, introduced by club chairman Peter Philpott, was Jean Davey, the daughter-inlaw of Arthur Davey. In addition to external signage replicating that previously on the old shed, the interior has been fitted with a display of clubs made by Davey, and a montage of pictures of his life at the club. Chairman Philpott said: “Five years ago we revived the name of Davey by naming a new pay and play membership after him. It has helped bring in a lot of members that might not previously thought about getting involved with a club. “The opening of the shelter is a natural progression of continuing to use Davey’s world record status as a significant marketing tool. The shelter is quite stunning and gives visitors a real eye-opener as they turn towards the club house.

“We have taken advantage of the development to upgrade the area round our first tee, including laying luxury, soft surfacing to the pathway and surround of the shelter.”

Hadleigh Bridge Club A new year for the club starts on 1st. September. On Mondays (except for bank holidays) we play Duplicate bridge starting at 7 p.m. On Tuesdays we have an afternoon of Chicago bridge starting at 2 p.m. We welcome any new faces and if you do not have a partner we will try and arrange one for you.

Please contact us beforehand to let us know if you need a partner. If you are learning or just wish to pick up some new ideas, we run a 'training session' starting at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays. These are only run on request so please feel free to contact us to discuss.

Stoke by Nayland Ladies Club Championship Nineteen ladies played 36 holes on Saturday 26 July 2014 in the blistering heat. Eighteen holes on the Gainsborough course, followed by 18 holes on the Constable course. The winner was Hannah Moul with a score of 75 on the first round and 74 on the second round making a total gross of 149.

She was presented with the Club Championship Trophy by Ladies Captain, Roz Clements.

Rebecca Mercer was second with a first round score of 84 and second round of 86, total gross of 170. Jude Hanner was third, first round score 90, second round 86 total gross of 176 Best net scores: First Fran Chandler with first round score of 77, second round 79 total net of 156. Second Corinne Jackson with first round score 79 second round 78 total net of 157. Bronze Trophy Winner: First Roz Clements with first round 99 second round 103 total gross 202. Second: Lesley Hitchcock with first round 97 second round 108 total gross 205

Hadleigh Dolphins A Hadleigh Dolphins Team entered the Open Water Swim on 19th July at Whitlingham Norforlk Sunshine and Storms.

Alex Deal Head Coach swam in the 3k event with a time of 58.49. followed by three swimmers making their debut in the 800m swim, Violet Salway (time 19.56) Elizabeth Stewart (time16.09), James Preedy (17.47). All swimming with the benefit of sunshine.

Will white in the first Wave of the 1500 m set off with the dark clouds forming but managing to finish in a time of 28.04, closely followed by Isobel Field (time 29.07), wave two began with a rumble of thunder, Finley Kirk back first in a time of 23.05 , followed by Ben Olive (time 26.05) and Gerraint White (30.16). Wave three set off but was abandoned due to the electric storm, swimmer Jasmine Hayward was brought back in a safety boat.

Finley Kirk and Ben Olive both came 3rd in their age group for Suffolk an excellent achievement for the club from Hadleigh. The event was enjoyed by all who entered but as with many English Summer Events the weather has an influence.

New Boy snatches Jonathan Lambert Salver A new member who had been given his first ever handicap a few days previously beat off a field of 120 to win the prestigious Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver at Newton Green Golf Club. The event came at the end of the club’s annual golf week, which again attracted more than 500 entries for a wide range of events over six days.

Salver winner was Philip Wheaton, one of a number of younger players from the Colchester area that have recently joined up at Newton. His success reflected the continued appeal of the competition, which presents the opportunity for a player from any sector of the club to unexpectedly hit the bigtime for at least one day in their golfing life.

Wheaton, given a handicap of 28 following submitting three qualifying cards, played six shots below his handicap and registered 42 points in the popular Stableford competition. He was followed by Zennan Szpurko and last year’s winner Lewis Woodhead, both on 41 points. Jonathan Lambert presented awards for the week at the Saturday night presentation party, with Jenny Downes (38) winning the best lady award and Harvey Watts (37) best junior.

For the first time, lower handicap players competed simultaneously on a gross score basis for a trophy in the form of a claret jug presented to the club by manager Carole List. She handed the award to Tom King, who came home with a total of 73. King achieved his success, despite scoring an eight on the par four first hole. After playing his round, he left for his seat at Portman Road, but then had to leave the Ipswich versus Fulham match midway through, after being notified of his success, and rushed back to Newton to pick up his award.

Other winners during the week were: Delaney Scramble: David Thurgate, Caroline Draine, Jenny Wilkins and Steve Wordley. Stableford: Jed Seeley, Adrienne Hughes, Mike Fuller and Alex Iveson. Kiskadee Trophy: Jan Doe and Phil Barlow. Three Clubs and Putter: Ian Duncan, Gwyneth Ferreira and Sally Cade. Points Mean Prizes: 1 James Cooper, 2 Steve Knappett, 3 Frank Salt.

Cross Country: 1 Jeremy Hamp, 2 Frank Salt. Best junior, Jed Seeley; best lady Adrienne Hughes. Nearest pin, Ben Uttridge.
