‘The Gayford Flyer’ a great success! Hadleigh’s inaugural cycling festival attracted hundreds of riders and their families to the town. The festival consisted of a sportive for over 200 adult cyclists of a junior event for 24 young cyclists. The Hadleigh Cycling Club planned the weekend to capitalise on the national and countywide interest in cycling, enthuse children and their parents, draw cyclists to the town and benefit local businesses. The sportive was named “The Gayford Flyer” in recognition of the town’s world record breaking aviator, Oswald Gayford. The 50km and 100km routes took the riders past landmarks including Gayford family home on Angel Street, RAF Wattisham where he served as commander and his final resting place in Naughton. The junior event proved to be an excellent opportunity for youngsters to receive coaching and experience racing in a safe environment. James Cartlidge, MP for South Suffolk, visited the event and witnessed the youngsters as they were put through a series of drills and participated in races. Adam Chamberlin, Chair of the Club said, “We believe that this weekend supports the Suffolk’s Year of Cycling initiative and links with the County Council’s ambition to be the “most active county”. “It also helps to ensure that there is a legacy for cycling in Hadleigh after the visits by the professionals in June with the Women’s Tour and the Tour of Britain last weekend.” Richard Holdaway, Sportive Director said, “The Flyer couldn’t have taken place without the help of numerous volunteers and the backing of businesses in the town. It has been a tremendous amount of work but the riders are already asking whether we will run it again next year!” ...Continued on page 3

Hadleigh’s First Cycling Festival

Super Summer Season Here at the River Stour Trust we have enjoyed a super summer season. Our boat trips have been more popular than ever and our four boats operating from Sudbury have been on the river taking passengers for trips almost every day. Our usual Saturday and Sunday lunch cruises from The Granary at Sudbury to The Henny Swan have been constantly booked all summer. It’s a great help that the new owners of The Swan are continually delivering good service and good food, thoroughly enjoyed by all of our passengers that stop for lunch. We have seen increased amount of mid-week charter bookings too. With parties, groups and family’s booking a complete boat for half a day. Some times for a lunch cruise or some for an evening trip. All our boat trips are maned by friendly, fully trained competent volunteer crews, who are well versed in the history of the navigation, much to the delight of our passengers. Our four boats, Rosette the 8 seater blue electric launch, Edwardian Lady a 12 seater white electric launch remain firm favourites with near silent running. The Frances J our 9 seater ugly duckling is as ever popular with customers with mobility problems as she is wheelchair friendly, has big comfy seats and is very stable. The pride of our fleet is of course the historic restored lighter the John Constable. Of course today she is not pulled by a horse as should would have been in the seventeen and eighteen hundreds when she would have been working as a commercial vessel on the river, but instead by silent electric motors. Our special events including Bat watch evenings, super cruises, Four for Three offers have all been well supported. Our next special event is October 17th where we will be offering a Harvest Lunch cruise at just £19 per ticket for a trip from Sudbury to Henny and return to the Visitor Education Centre for a bowl of soup and ploughman’s lunch. To book a ticket phone 01787 313100. Our usual Saturday and Sunday services will continue to operate until the end of October, so if you fancy a day on the river watching the world slip by steadily and huge amounts of wildlife come soon. riverstourtrust.org Facebook - Sudbury Boat Trips

The sportive was supported by The Pedal House, The George Public House, Sunny Day Cycleworks, Crockatt Garage, Morrisons and the Co-op. The club has had an exceptional busy year. It runs weekly junior coaching sessions and a range of regular rides for its members. Ten of the members took part in an epic ride from London to Paris in 24 hours in June and raised over £7000 for the Brendan Oakes Trust, a local charity which supports young cancer sufferers. Fashion Show #Rethink Fashion An exciting new event is being planned for November. The Porch Project is hosting a Fashion Show in St Mary’s Church involving Tatty Broyd’s, Girls Love Roses, Rachel’s and Hall Street. An array of gorgeous outfits will be showcased together with the opportunity to do some shopping from a number of stalls offering a range of products from accessories to homewares. The organisers are hoping to involve many of Hadleigh’s shopkeepers in this endeavour. We hope that while the evening will highlight all that Hadleigh High Street has to offer, it will also provide a fun evening out for many local people combining shopping, chat and sartorial inspiration in equal measure. Most importantly, we hope that your support will raise some much needed funds for the Porch Project. Alongside the Fashion Show we are running a Competition for 12 - 20 year olds to reinvigorate an item of clothing bought from a charity shop. The idea is that they will up-cycle any tired, unwanted piece of clothing and modernise it, creating a look for today. We invite any young person to enter and the designs will be showcased at the Fashion Show with prizes on offer for the best designs. The competition will be free to enter but competitors will need to provide a before and after photograph of their creations. Any item of clothing may be entered, or indeed a complete outfit, the main stipulation being that it must have been pre-loved. We are very excited about this aspect of the fashion show and very much hope that we will be inundated with entries. Porch Project hold a regular evening for girls in years 7-10. It’s a great place to socialise and have a laugh with other like-minded girls and is certainly not all pink and fluffy! They have many upcoming activities and have already organised an outing to laser quest. They are planning to help organise the fashion show and are busy designing and creating outfits. Come and join in at the Deanery Tower in Hadleigh – for more information please contact Lizzie Beckett at youthworker2@porchproject.co.uk. For details of how to enter the competition and ticket information please email funding@porchproject.co.uk. Tickets for the fashion show will also be on sale at outlets around Hadleigh. We look forward to welcoming you all in November for what promises to be an exciting evening.

Hello my readers: you often stop me in the High Street and tell me that I do so many unusual things and that is true. In the early part of the Summer a call came through from the Office of the Lord of the Manor of Polstead inviting my mother and I to join Alan Keeble who is the Lord of the Manor and his wife Susan to The Night of a Thousand Pipes – at The Troxy Cinema in Stepney. This was another one of those occasions that will be remembered for years to come. On a Sunny afternoon in August, Frank my chauffeur slid us through the highways and byways to The Marriott Hotel at Canary Wharf where we met our hosts. Afternoon tea by the old docks followed and before long we were alighting from the motor car to enter The Troxy. The Troxy was full of art deco splendour. This Wurlitzer had initially been installed at The Trocadero Elephant and Castle. It was removed in 1960 and over the last ten years had been installed in this cinema. The theatre was packed. Robert Wolfe who is the resident organist at The Thursford Collection in Norfolk gave what Alan Keeble described as a “world class” evening. We were absolutely thrilled as the organ located in chambers on either side of the auditorium reverberated through us. Brenda, my mother said how sad she was when the evening came to an end. The whole place was on its feet as Robert Wolfe was joined by another organist for the finale and together they put the instrument through its paces. It was a magnificent occasion and I am ever grateful to Alan and Susan Keeble for inviting me. Life is not always a bed of roses. You will know that I love my three miniature dachshunds. It was awful to find that Tilly, my youngest and quite adorable, had lost the use of her back legs. I was so lucky to obtain an immediate referral to the specialist veterinary hospital, Dick White, in Newmarket where they were able to operate. As I write this piece Tilly is still in care but I am assured that she is doing really well and I am looking forward to being re-united A Lasting Power of Attorney can make matters so much easier should a relation lose mental capacity or not be up to running his or her affairs as they once used to. It makes things much more straightforward to have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place rather than wait until it is absolutely necessary by which time the person giving the Lasting Power of Attorney may no longer have the capacity to do so The sale and purchase of a property or the granting or taking of a lease can produce problems that a lay client may not envisage at the outset. Do make contact with us so that we can assist you. We are on your doorstep Howard Gibbons

Don't be sheepish come to our events.. HADS have been busy over the past few months arranging and rehearsing for our events. Our next event is our variety show on the 10th October at the URC church 7pm. This show is part of the "Year Of The Sheep" events and is the encore event to round it all up. The show is a mix of HADS drama, music, comedy and magic also featuring The Walking Sax, Elmsett Fellowship Brass Band, also VIP balloons who will be attempting to make a life time sheep and Taylor & Harry will be singing too. The show is open for all ages and tickets are ÂŁ5 each on sale at Keith Avis NOW. Looking ahead to next year HADS are busy working on their next panto "Robin Hood Of Wolves Wood" which this year is kindly sponsored by The Hadleigh Thrift Shop. Yet again it will be held at St Mary's Church in January 2016 and is a mix pantomime, slapstick comedy and some fantastic toe tapping music. Like last year the panto has been locally written by Sarah-Jane Clarke and myself and features lots of local landmarks and references to Hadleigh. As you can see HADS has been so busy and also being involved with the Year Of The Sheep events too its been a brilliant year for all. To keep up with all whats happening check our our Facebook page and also our website www.hads.moonfruit.com. Trev Clarke, Chairman of HADS hadleighents@aol.com

Well Done Jodie! Jodie Turner age 9 wanted to help raise money for people with cancer by holding a cake sale and so we decided to be part of The Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer Support hosting it at Milden Pavilion on Saturday 19th Sept. Jodie a pupil at Boxford School, who is a keen cake maker helped to bake, decorate and test all the cakes. Along with her brother Owen and friend Asha Mayes washing cars they raised a final grand total of ÂŁ458! This is a staggering amount of money and Jodie has been so lucky to receive such tremendous support, donations and cakes to sell on the day.

Kersey Mill Newsletter As a busy summer draws to a close our thoughts turn to winter and there will be no let-up in activity at The Mill. Preparations for our annual fund raising event “Santa’s Workshop and His Elves” are in full swing and it is expected to be bigger and better than before. Santa’s Workshop is far more than a Grotto it is a unique and magical experience & fun filled interactions for children, primarily between the ages 2-12 years. Lasting approximately 45 minutes a truly magical experience is the description that a lot of visitors have used in the past. The event is arranged and presented by the Friends of Kersey Mill, with kind donations from Cliff at Cobwebs Donkies, All Season Marquees, Art & Craft at Kersey Mill all the local girls from Hadleigh High School & various volunteers from this community that give up their time to help. We are truly grateful. Tickets prices have been held at £12 per child with an accompanying adult free of charge, these are now on sale so do book early as each year we have sold out well before Christmas. Tickets can be purchased via www.kerseymill.net or www.eventbrite.co.uk Major works to the frame are about to get underway, a huge task with main structural timbers measuring 8,2 meters long and 30cm by 30cm across being replaced not to mention the meters of flooring and floor joist that then need to be replaced. More on this next month. The previously mentioned works to the exterior are now complete, all windows now have glass and open and shut accordingly, Bill made a fantastic job of replicating a centre pivoted window that can been seen in situ within a photograph from the 1950’s. A fresh coat of paint over the repaired weather board has finished the job off nicely and allowed us to move inside to commence with phase two. So with the works taking us through to Christmas it looks likely that we will have real elves working away with Santa in his workshop this year!!

New treatment for Asthma Sufferers now available at Hadleigh Physiotherapy DO YOU SUFFER WITH ASTHMA? Would you like to be able to control your symptoms better? Would you like to reduce your dependence on medication? Would you like to improve your quality of life? As a development to the Respiratory Physiotherapy Service we provide our Specialist Respiratory Physiotherapist Sarah Fowler is now offering courses in the BUTEYKO METHOD. The Buteyko Method is a structured programme of breathing retraining developed by a Ukrainian Doctor Professor Konstantin Buteyko in the 1960’s. He noticed that when Asthmatics experience symptoms they over breath or Hyperventilate. This natural reaction leads to an increase in symptoms. He therefore developed a treatment approach which taught patients to reduce the size and rate of breathing. This treatment method was not well known in the West until the 1980’s and there are still relatively few trained practitioners in this country. However as more research has been produced the approach has been gaining credibility. Its effectiveness was recently assessed by the British Thoracic Society (BTS), the national society for specialist Respiratory Doctors, and having examined the published evidence was given a strong recommendation in its guidelines for Asthma care in 2014. They agreed that the clinical trials to date demonstrate that it can • Improve Asthma symptoms • Reduce use of Bronchodilators • Improve quality of life The Buteyko Method is complimentary to conventional Asthma management. The aim is to maximise your wellbeing. If you are interested in this new treatment and would like to receive more information, please contact Hadleigh Physiotherapy on 01473 810185 or send an e-mail to enquiries@hadleighphysio.co.uk

Sudbury Dramatic Society present Neil Simon’s very funny play Rumours November is farce time at Sudbury’s Quay Theatre when Sudbury Dramatic Society present Neil Simon’s very funny play Rumours (the British version), from Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 7th at 7.45pm. When Ken and Chris, Len and Claire, Ernest and Cookie and Glenn and Cassie arrive at a wedding anniversary party they discover that although the food laid out in the kitchen all ready to cook there are no staff, their hostess is missing and their host, Charley, has a bullet wound in his ear lobe and is too dazed to speak! To add to the mayhem, Len and Claire have just been injured in a car crash and each of the four couples brings their own problems with them. With Charley being a prominent Government Official, and the guests needing to protect their own social standing and careers, to avoid any breath of scandal is paramount. When a second, accidental, gunshot leaves Ken temporarily deaf, and the police arrive, Len has to pretend he is Charley, concocting a funny, touching and fantastic explanation! Come and join us for an evening of laughter perfect for chasing away those winter blues! Rumours (the British version) is on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 3rd until Saturday 7th November at 7.45pm. The last SDS Gala Evening of 2015 on Wednesday 5th November at 7.45pm offers audiences the chance to dress up and enjoy canapés served during the play’s interval. Tickets are on sale from the Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.quaytheatre.org.uk

Cosford Comment ...from Jenny Antill Schools in Suffolk are making steady progress. The summer period saw the publication of GCSE and A level results, and also the outcomes of SATS tests in primary schools. It is good to see that improvement is being seen at all levels, with our secondary school public exam results outperforming those of the nation as a whole. At the primary level our schools’ performance has moved much closer to the national average, and Suffolk has risen by 22 places in the league tables. We are now 118th out of 150 authorities; a good rise but there is much further to go. The Scottish Referendum and the promises made by politicians across the board with regard to devolving further powers from Westminster has focussed the mind of the government on the issue of power sharing with local councils and other bodies. So far devolution deals have only been finalised with large metropolitan areas such as Manchester. However ‘expressions of interest’ have been invited from all areas, rural or urban. In early September Suffolk sent in its own opening proposal. This is an initiative shared by the County Council and the seven Suffolk District/Borough Councils, together with the Police and Crime Commissioner, the NHS and the New Anglia LEP. The document can be found on the County Council website among the papers for the Council Meeting held on 16th September. There is a good deal of uncertainty about what additional responsibilities and powers might be devolved, and, indeed, what demands Westminster might make in return. At best however devolution could mean a stronger local voice regarding how services are delivered in Suffolk, plus the funding to back this up. It is clear that any changes will radically alter the structure of the public sector across the country as a whole, but it is less clear how. I am aiming to be in Lavenham Library between 10 a.m. and 12 a.m. on the morning of Saturday 24th October with a view to meeting anyone who wants to talk about any issue that may be concerning them. Please come along and have a chat. Jenny Antill is the Suffolk County Councillor for the Cosford Division. Contact her through the SCC website or through www.jennyantillsblog.blogspot.co.uk

French’s Care Haven Boxford Quiz 7pm Saturday 10th October The Village Hall Boxford. Special Fish and Chip supper available. Licensed Bar. Come and have a great night out and help our Charity at the same time. For tickets please contact: Mandy Flather – 01787 210228, Anna Warren-Thomas – 01284 831043 or Diana Witts – 01473 806635. Jo has kindly organised a Golf Charity day at Brett Vale Golf Club in Raydon on 14th October. 9.30 start. Includes breakfast, 18 holes of golf and lunch, to book a place please contact Jo on her number below. As well as the pony smuggler that we rescued last Month, we also received a desperate call from a local elderly man in his 80’s who’s wife owned 3 small ponies, unfortunately the man’s wife has dementia and has had to suddenly go into a care home. With the man unable to cope with the ponies French’s agreed to take them. With our farm full to capacity it puts a strain on us, so any help or donations from people is very much appreciated. We are desperately looking for a mobile home, due to the sick animals we have coming to us there are times when staff have to stay with them all night and at the moment they are sleeping on the floor of our kitchen! I commend their dedication and passion to help the animals that come to us, but with a mobile home, things could be a great deal more comfortable for our staff on these nights of attendance. It does not matter if the mobile/large caravan is old or scruffy, we can with a combined effort make it useable and comfortable. As local people may also have seen in the East Anglian Daily Times, French’s Farm is to be sold and we have to find a new home/base for our Charity and Care Farm, our farm helps abandoned, neglected and abused animals and people with confidence problems, low self esteem and learning difficulties. We are looking for somewhere with a minimum of 20-30 acres that has out buildings. We are hoping there is a land owner out there who likes what we do and wants to support and help us grow. You may not be able to help with premises or mobile home, but you may know of someone who can, so please pass the word and help us, contact Jann on info below. DRIVERS our last request for this month: If you drive a vehicle can you please be aware of the horses on the roads, we have had several incidents where drivers have come so close to the horses and riders that they have hit the foot of the rider. A lady recently tried to squeeze though the narrow arrow give way sign on Station Road while a walker and two horses had the right of way, she totally ignored the pleas of people and other drivers to stop. This sort of behaviour is becoming common practise in Hadleigh, it takes seconds to wait and seconds to badly injure or kill a rider and horse. There are virtually no bridleways for us to ride on in Hadleigh and certainly non we can get to without going on the road. So please take a second to brake and pass wide and slow. As we all know, Horses and their Riders have a right to use the roads and was here and doing so way before cars and lorry’s came along. So please have a few seconds of patience and slow down, while passing wide of us. VOLUNTEERS, SPONSORS AND FUND RAISERS NEEDED Please contact : Jann Turner 01473 833944 / 07747 755556 jann.turner@hotmail.co.uk - Jo Sargent 01473 824865 / 07743 558142

Romania Tour 2015 In the early hours of Monday 24th August, fourteen of us left Hadleigh for Stansted Airport and our flight to Bucharest in Romania. Our tour guides were Danny and Claire from ‘Le Petit Paris’ in Maiden Way. Danny was keen to show us ‘the real Romania’ and its people and his enthusiasm for his homeland shone through. We enjoyed our first afternoon and evening exploring Bucharest and meeting personal friends of Danny and Claire. We had a royal feast as they welcomed ‘the English’ to their restaurant in the city. Seeing the beauty of Bucharest with its green parks, history and architecture outweighed the tiredness of the early start, especially the impromptu visit to the Romanian Athenaeum – stunning! The next day we travelled into the hills - a long drive but the few days that followed exploring the area was well worth it. Basil, our coach driver, settled into our group and helped us learn a bit of Romanian. He navigated the roads and the hills with skill and took us to some amazing places. Danny’s programme, which included Monasteries, lakes and a boat trip, gorges, villages, a Spa town, shopping in the gift stalls, and the secret view from the mountain, were all out of this world and will stay with us forever. The people are lovely and their hospitality was superb with tasty, fresh, home cooked food. A visit to a friend who had his own beehives and enabled us to buy home produced organic honey was another highlight. The week was tiring with a lot of travelling and I for one will never complain about the state of our English roads ever again. However, the whole experience was fabulous and Romania is a place to which I would happily return. Danny wants to do this tour again and arrange different ones to other parts of the country so give him a visit in Le Petit Paris and sign up. Pauline Thrower and friends!

Weather fails to dampen support for lead theft church Following the lead theft from Lavenham Church’s Roof, the local community refused to let the Bank Holiday Rain dampen their spirits as the came out in force to support the Church’s “Raise the Roof Appeal”. Rector, The Revd. Stephen Earl said of the day, “We were overwhelmed by the numbers of people who turned out, despite the weather, to purchase items which had been donated for sale by so many from the village.” Mr Earl continued, “On the day alone £7,059 was raised, and people are continuing to post cheques through the Rectory door. We have even received promises of support from as far afield as the USA, Austria and Australia” Churchwardens, David Deacon and Graham Pattrick, commented that “yesterday’s fundraising was amazing, far better than any of us could have dared imagine, and whilst we have a long way to go to raise the significant amount need to repair the damage caused, we are encouraged by the huge support our community has shown us.” An online “Just Giving” site will be up and running this week, enabling people with links to Lavenham, both locally and around the world, to be able to support our “Raise the Roof Appeal” by donating via credit or debit card. Further fundraising is already being planned, with a team being assembled to support this. If anyone is interested in being part of this they are encouraged to speak to the Rector in the first instance. Fundraising events will include an Auction, a Bridge Tournament, and Concerts by various choirs and musical groups whose members have kindly offered to sing and/or play to raise funds.

Lavenham Christmas Fair December 4th, 5th and 6th Light up your Christmas early this year by coming along to Lavenham's magical three-day Christmas Fair, set in the lovely old Market Place and historic Guildhall. Festivities, entertainment and shopping start at 5pm on Friday with the traditional Lighting Up Lavenham ceremony, when the village is momentarily plunged into darkness and then magically lit up by thousands of twinkling white lights, and continues on Saturday and Sunday. The emphasis will be on festive food, drink, fun and shopping. There will be 80 stalls in marquees and the Guildhall throughout the three days, selling a unique selection of gifts, clothing, toys, stocking fillers and food and drink from some of East Anglia's most exciting contemporary designers and innovative cooks. You can eat and drink as you stroll around , taking your pick from mulled wine and mince pies, hot chestnuts, non-alcoholic drinks, great coffee, hog roast, pork and apple burgers, beef stews and curries, pulled meats in buns. And you can buy Austrian wine and spirits, English spirits and liqueurs, cakes, lavender food and products, East Anglian cheeses, pies, curry spices, pickles and chutneys, local hand-made chocolates, mince pies and many other Christmas goodies. Bring the children too: they will love the mini-fairground rides, the candy floss stall, the Big Wheel, which was a huge success with adults as well last year with its bird's eye views over Lavenham and the surrounding countryside -and Father Christmas, of course, in his grotto in one of the loveliest buildings in the Market Place. There will be entertainment all weekend, including performances by the Lavenham Upbeat Contemporary Choir who now travel across East Anglia with their music with a twist, and there will be plenty of stalls to interest the little ones: wooden toys and gifts, funky jewellery and folding hats, beanbags, pottery chickens, fur hats, beaded Christmas decorations, books and paintings. You'll be able to buy garden items, artwork, wildlife paintings, photography and prints, stained glass gifts, all kinds of jewellery, handmade candles, fresh Christmas wreaths and decorations, Christmas cards and stationery, retro bags, pottery, spa products and natural skin products....and you can even have fun buying blankets, toys and bandanas -- for your dog! There will be lots of other entertaining Christmas-themed events going on and all the shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants will be open for late night shopping and throughout the weekend. So make a date in your diary now and come along for a festive feast of food, fun and shopping! Free parking throughout the village and shopping under cover. Catching the Smile September 10th saw the first event of the Suffolk branch of the Masonic Fishing Charity (MTSFC) which was held at the Hintlesham Fly Fishing Club lake. The Suffolk branch, set up by Court Knoll Lodge, based in Boxford, “aims to bring an interactive fishing and countryside experience to people with Special Needs”. It achieves this by running fishing events, both coarse and fly, at various fisheries and inviting participants from special needs schools and centres and people who have suffered trauma to come and join in. This is far more than just a days fishing though! It enables mentally disabled people to gain in confidence, meet new challenges and achieve tangible results to take away; it helps disadvantaged people and those from harsh backgrounds to renew their confidence in meeting people and interacting with adults from outside their spheres. It helps physically disabled people (including war heroes and stroke victims) to participate and experience something that may otherwise be unavailable to them and it enables our volunteers to give back to the community and have some fun along the way. The Masonic fishing Charity which has been running in the UK since 2000 is completely run by volunteers and is a non profit making enterprise. The group benefitting from this first Suffolk event was Julian Support from East Anglia, the group works with people with mental health issues and helps to facilitate and support recovery, more information on the group can be found at www.juliansupport.org. A total of 42 people arrived at Hintlesham in bright sunshine to start the day and a hearty breakfast of bacon and sausage baps, tea and coffee was immediately served. After a comprehensive health and safety talk was issued all the nine participants from Julian Support were given a quality rucksack 'welcome bag' containing a cap, waterproof poncho, wristband, antiseptic hand wipes, water bottle holder, a fish bag to hold their catch and a leaflet explaining the work of the MTSFC. They were then introduced to their experienced fishing partner for the day and made their way too the waters edge to begin fishing. With trout rising all over the lakes it was only a short time before the first fish of the day was landed by Ian with a little help and encouragement from caster Mick Austin of Holland on Sea. Ian commented “I have been fishing at Needham Lakes before but this is my first go at fly fishing and is a good break from my normal daily routine, I'm really enjoying myself”. In the following few hours around 40 trout were landed in total. The participants were allowed to keep two fish each to take home, the remainder being unhooked and returned unharmed back to the lake. A horn sounded at 1 pm to mark the end of the mornings fishing and everyone walked from the lake to enjoy a hearty BBQ lunch of burgers, sausages, fresh salad and rolls followed by strawberries and cream.

All competitors received a framed certificate and lapel badge. James Gant, recovery co-ordinator for Julian Supported commented "I really can't speak highly enough of the Suffolk and Essex Freemasons and helpers who made this event happen, they all thoroughly spoilt us throughout the whole day. There isn't anything you could of done to make the day any better. To be able to offer such an opportunity for our Service User's to participate in has been amazing, you only had to look at the smiles on the participants faces at the end of the day to see what a positive impact the event has had on them”. “It is event's like this that enable individuals to gain confidence and recover in the community." Court Knoll Lodge are the organising team for these events and would welcome any support from volunteers, the next event will be a coarse fishing event. Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre For the last three years whilst on loan to The Shelley Centre Thyme has proved himself to be a very versatile and willing pony, much loved by those special riders at Shelley for whom he provided valuable therapy and also became a great friend. He took readily to the new skill of carriage driving which he greatly enjoyed, and with his owner Lucy he has kept himself extremely fit doing Pony Club events, show jumping, cross country and endurance riding, as well as his ‘day job’ with the disabled children and adults at Shelley. So we will miss him as he has now moved on to a new home, but thank him and his owners for his time with us at Shelley and hope he enjoys the next stage in his life. Difficult to replace but we are now looking for another Thyme. A 14hh ride and drive pony with a good temperament, on permanent loan or to buy. If you know of such a pony we would really like to hear from you. Please contact Lyn, our Stable Manager at The Centre. Our new term is progressing well and we are delighted to see a few new faces in our team of volunteers. September saw a working party of 20 very keen volunteers from B.T. who came to lift ragwort, cut grass, hedges and tidy the garden, as well as some carpentry work. We are very grateful to them all for their enthusiasm and assistance, as well as for their donation of some tools for our future use. We are also grateful to all who took part in the Long Distance Sponsored Ride, to those of our helpers and supporter who spent the day stewarding the route, also to the local landowners who allowed us to cross some of their private property which made the route so enjoyable for the riders. Our next fundraising event is an evening of Frog Racing at Nayland Village Hall on 17th October. Fish n’ Chip supper. For details contact Di on 01473 658552. Sounds like fun so do come and join us. Wattle be the future for Orchard Barn? Over the past two or three months several new volunteers have joined the regulars at Orchard Barn. And as we all know, many hands make light work. We have also had a number of donations of tools and materials, for which we are always very grateful. Recently we’ve had exercise and fun in creating lots of daub needed in the construction of our new rest area, a communal shelter for volunteers that will be much appreciated during break times in very cold or inclement weather. Daub is a combination of clay, hoggin (subsoil), straw and water, trodden and rolled into a blended mixture. The clay needed in the daub mix has been harvested from our own ditch, thus improving drainage as well. Wattle on the roof, consisting of last year’s hazel coppice material, has the daub applied to it and then pantiles are laid on top to provide a watertight and insulated roof as the photo shows. If you’d like to get muddy then join us when daub is being applied to the walls sometime soon. We are SW of Mill Road, Battisford or visit our website www.orchardbarn.org.uk or phone 01473 658193

A Huge Thank You Thankyou to our families, friends, charities and all those who supported us with our fundraising for the World Scout Jamboree 2015 in Japan It was a trip of a lifetime like we expected and we were so lucky to have this opportunity. We started off our 30 hour journey to Japan in Bedfordshire on 24th July 2015. After a 3am start, our journey began with 2 planes to Japan and eventually we reached our destination. Following this we travelled through Tokyo and took the bullet train to home hospitality (HoHo) in Toyama. Despite being exhausted, we were both excited to meet our host family and on arrival we were dressed in Kimonos and enjoyed typical Japanese meal of sushi and noodles along with celebratory fireworks. The next day consisted of visiting a museum, a temple and a shopping mall in which we had a meal out. We finished the day with a family meal back at the house, of octopus dumplings and a peach cake for pudding. That night we went to bed early ready for the early start travelling down to the Jamboree. It took us 12 hours to travel from Toyama to Yamaguchi in the south of the main Japanese island. Even though it was sad saying goodbye to our family and everyone else we met, everyone couldn’t wait for the next phase of our trip. After a few days of settling in we had activities starting with the opening ceremony where all 30,000 of us were gathered for a range of entertainment including an aeroplane show and welcomes from leaders in Scouting. Whilst on the Jamboree we participated in different events including a day trip to Hiroshima, and different schools for community service, and activities onsite like world culture day – where we tried a range of food from all over the world by walking around different camps – and global development village – where we explored and learnt about different ways of life. Hiroshima was a life changing experience and gave us an insight on the terrible disaster of 1945. Community service was also a highlight and it was amazing visiting schools in rural areas to learn about the education system in Japan. There were many other facilities on the camp, like a massive pavilion which was like a market place, and in our free time you could walk around and make friends with people all over the world. Next to our camp were a Brazilian, Hong Kong and Danish units, and every night we had a different country round to share dinner with. We had a ceremony to conclude our amazing stay at the Jamboree which included a visit from the Japanese prime minister and prince, and some popular bands and singers in Japan. After 12 days on the Jamboree site we packed up and got a bullet train to Tokyo (which travelled at 150mph) and got us to Tokyo for 8pm when the city was all lit up. After reaching the hotel, we put our stuff away and adventured back into the city for food and a walk around late at night. The next few days consisted of sightseeing and we started early the next morning at the top of the Skytree with an incredible view of the whole city. We also visited electric city, joyopolis (a stimulated theme park), temples, the imperial palace, and finished off with the Scouting Tokyo live festival. It was sad leaving Japan and saying goodbye to our scouting family that we’d spent the last 3 weeks with but it was an unforgettable experience. We would again like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped us get to Japan and we’d both be happy to share more memories and pictures with anyone who wishes. Thanks again, Charlotte Woodmore and Ellenor Norman

Halloween is coming up at the end of the month as well as bonfire night at the beginning of November; please consider others on both of these nights and all can have a good time. Suffolk Police are urging you to consider the effect your actions may have on others this Halloween and Bonfire Night – and to respect those may not want to take part in the festivities. Traditionally both Halloween and Bonfire nights are busy for police with a large number of calls during the end of October and beginning of November relating to anti-social behaviour by a minority who take trick or treating too far and firework-related incidents. We want people to enjoy their Halloween and Bonfire night celebrations but we also want those taking part to have consideration for others. There is a need for everyone taking part to behave responsibly. We would ask parents to ensure they supervise their children, for their own safety and to ensure they do not call at addresses where the occupants do not want to take part and that anyone trick or treating only visits homes where they know the residents. Most residents that do like to take part normally have some form of Halloween gimmick outside their property. Halloween and Bonfire night can be genuinely scary for many older residents - please don’t cause them any unnecessary distress. There is a line between high spirits and anti- social behaviour and we are well aware there are small minorities who will ignore our appeals and we will be out trying to cause trouble. A series of posters has been produced which address the issues surrounding Halloween. One is designed for those who do not want to take part while another asks parents if they would normally let their children call on a stranger’s home unsupervised. These posters will be put up around the county and are being widely distributed to schools and businesses, (look out for these nearer the time in your local shops, also at Hadleigh police station). Don’t forget the clocks will go back at the end of the month. This is a little reminder I use to remember which way and when to change the clocks: - spring forward (1 hour forward in the spring time) and fall back (1 hour back in the fall/autumn) PCSO 3108 Mandy Coleman

Hadleigh and District Gardening Club At our September meeting we were treated to a fascinating talk on bonsai by Rosemary Smith from the Ipswich Bonsai Society. How can something that we see every day outside that is so large, instead be grown in a small pot and often kept to just a few inches tall? Rosemary, with obvious enthusiasm for her craft, attempted to unravel the mystery for us. The secret seems to rest with a Rosemary Smith is on the right with combination of regular club member Julia Wild pruning (above and below the soil), choosing the right pot for your specimen, using the right soil, correct feeding and finally regular watering. I was all set to 'go bonsai' until that last point - for someone who only remembers to feed the cat if it miaows at me, the thought of watering twice a day seemed unrealistic. However, it does seem a craft worth considering if you have the patience, and it is something anyone can try. In front of our eyes Rosemary even turned a regular perennial plant, bought that afternoon from a local nursery, into a fledgling bonsai. It was good to greet new members at our last meeting but we do have room for more, so if you have any interest in gardening why not give us a try? No gardening knowledge necessary (no one is tested!), and whether young, more mature in years or somewhere in between, all are welcome. We are a friendly bunch, membership cost is nominal (just ÂŁ1 per meeting for members or ÂŁ3 for non members) and we meet on the second Monday of the month at 7.30pm in the Town Hall. At our next meeting on Monday October 12th our guest speaker is local photographer Clare Dawson. Clare specialises in still life images of flowers, and plant portraits shot in their natural environment. We hope to see you there. Andy Leeder, Chairman

4 LIFE LANDSCAPES

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts One of the joys of having a garden is being able to sit out in it on a sunny day, and enjoy the beauty of the flowers, and the birds flying around. Mary and I like warmth, but not too much sun, so our favourite spot is sat under an ornamental plum tree near the back of our house. The bird feeders are hung in the tree, and providing we are quiet birds will come and feed within a few feet of us. We also have a couple of spots in the extended part of our garden where we like to sit at certain times in the year. Immediately outside our summerhouse is good on sunny days in Spring when the bulbs in that part of the garden are flowering, and when the damson and apple trees are in flower. We also have a garden bench by the yew hedge between the vegetable patch and the fruit trees which can be very nice at this time of the year on a sunny afternoon. Think about your own garden. Could you improve its attractions as somewhere to sit and enjoy the open air ? When I think about it my seating spots are short on perfume. There are plenty of perfumed plants around the garden, but not near my favourite seating positions. By the way the plum tree was a mistake. It was a Silver Wedding present , and so has been planted for over 30 years. The label said that it would grow to 12 feet, and all those years ago I believed it. It is now over 20 feet tall, and is much too close to the house. I saw my house built, and am not worried about the house foundations, but if you are planting trees make sure you know how big they could be after say 30 years. Weather Records In August at Kersey there was 44.5 mm (1.75") of rain which is just a bit less than average monthly rainfall. The 3 monthly total at the end of August was 138.4 mm (5.4") which is again just a bit less than the average figure. In August the maximum temperature was 28 Cel (82F) which is typical. The minimum temperature was 11 Cel (52F) which is a couple of degrees higher than average. Hints October is the month to start the Winter clear up while enjoying the last of the Summer flowers, and harvesting and enjoying the vegetables that you have grown. For me it has been a very good year for beans, onions, strawberries and blackberries. There is an increasing interest in planting Spring Bedding and Containers, and this is the time to get on with this job. The popular plants are Pansies and Wallflowers (correctly Cheiranthus), although there are other plants such as Bellis (the double daisy) that can be used. I am a little wary of buying Wallflower plants, because they belong to the crucifer family, and are therefore susceptible to the "Club Root" disease which affects cabbages and related vegetables, and I do not want to risk introducing this into my vegetable patch. Where no vegetables are grown this is less important. October is a good month to lift and replant Crocosmia & Montbretia. Throw away the old tubers and replant the best of the new ones. It is also important to remember that we can have a damaging frost by the end of October, so it is a good idea to either protect or propagate tender perennials. We do not know what the coming Winter will be like, so we should be prepared. One can get very good sweet pea plants by sowing them now in pots or root trainers, and over wintering them in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. Enjoy your gardening, John Rye

Thankyou

Discount Shopping Night!

A Fund Raising Autumn Fayre was held at Whatfield on Saturday 12th September and the monies raised is to be shared between The Whatfield Carpet Bowls Club and Fisher House at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in recognition of the care they gave to families who were injured in the Tunisia Beach Shooting, two of whom were our Bowls club members who’s Daughter had been injured. The Committee and Members would like to express their sincere thanks to all who donated and supported the event.

On Thursday 22nd October, Corn Craft and Black Barn Toys & Games are holding a 15% off shopping evening. Between 5pm and 9pm, everything, with just a few exceptions, will be discounted by 15%!!! A great chance to get ahead with your Christmas shopping! The full range of Christmas cards and decorations will be available at Corn Craft and the tea room will also be staying open for supper and refreshments. So if you fancy combining a meal out with some early Christmas shopping, why not give them a call! Black Barn Toys & Games is a fantastic toy shop for those of you with little ones to buy for. Toy shops are rapidly disappearing from our streets as internet sales and electronic toys dominate this market. But if you are looking for stimulating, traditional toys, plus a raft of great stocking fillers for the kids, then come and take a peek in this lovely little shop. Find them at Bridge Farm Barns, Monks Eleigh, IP7 7AY www.bridgefarmbarns.co.uk

A Date for your Diary The ball is rolling! We have a small army of volunteers ready and willing to provide a free Christmas lunch with an afternoon of entertainment in the Ansell Centre. Now what we need is a guest list! The event is open to all those in Hadleigh and the surrounding villages who would otherwise be on their own at Christmas. There is no age restriction and no set criteria. For example, full time carers could come with the relative for whom they care, people may have partners serving in the forces, people may have family abroad or on holiday at Christmas, people who are bereaved etc. So this update goes out in particular to groups, residential homes, churches, businesses, health, care and social welfare professionals to help identify people who would benefit from such an opportunity. The first meeting for the volunteers, who will also be welcome to join the Christmas lunch, is to be held on Tuesday 13th October at 7.30pm in the room upstairs at The George pub in Hadleigh. Everybody with an interest in this venture will be most welcome; ideas and suggestions encouraged, further development received heartily and refreshments will be provided. Watch this space for news of a very special fundraising auction! If anybody would like further details, please feel free to contact us, Sarah and Simon Thompson on 01473 – 829246 or email sarahtooley10@hotmail.com

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029

Press Gang Laundry Services serves Hadleigh and the surrounding area with laundry, dry-cleaning and This month celebrate 20 year ironing we services to domestic and trading in Hadleigh high stre commercial customers alike.

Oh dear! It’s Ollie to the rescue again because Kenny is so dog tired after his outing that he missed his deadline. Our little mascot was a great hit at the I.T. Fleet Automotive Fun Day in Raydon and enjoyed meeting the lovely employees who are currently supporting several charities, including Sesaw. By the time you read this, the winners of our Facebook Photo Competition will be chosen for our 206 calendar. The judges had a difficult job, naturally I was not entered to give the others a fair chance! Back at the Sanctuary, we have lots of black and black/white kittens, one poor girl had SEVEN! Mother thinks herself quite the big game hunter. Went out trapping and guess what? Returned with more black cats! Nobody wants us but please do not pass by. Look beyond our colour to discover our personalities. Now the bonfire season is upon us please check for hibernating hedgehogs before you light up. There are so few of our prickly friends left to help in our gardens that each one is precious. The fundraisers are holding an Autumn Sale with a Christmas flavour, 11-4pm on 25th October at Great Bentley Village Hall. Our big Christmas Fair and Annual Draw will be held on 15th November, 10-3pm at The Old School in Long Melford. I hope my cat’s eye view has been of interest. Kenneth may well fret over my little exposÊs but I’ll save them for another time. Mother is in need of my company on her evening rounds, then it will be back to a nice warm hay barn for another 80 winks for me, Ollie (the Black) Cat! We were sad at Whatfield that another year 6 had to leave our school family, but we know they have moved on to High school as a real credit to the school. We had such a lovely finale to the year with the best results we could wish for in end of year SAT’s, and sporting triumphs in our sports week. It is lovely to know that we can work hard academically, enjoy competing in sports and have fun too! We wish them all well in High School. Our new pupils are mixing in well, and enjoying all the activities available to them in our lovely Early Years Area. As our school is so small children feel at home very quickly, and often join in activities much sooner than you would expect at Reception. We have started by launching into the project of ‘Holidays’ and it looks like the boys have had some fun playing in the sand. Our children have settled in really quickly and are often to be found at playtimes on the field or playground in their luminous builders jackets! Pupils have started to attend the new clubs, and craft club remains one of our most popular. Using sea shells for frames fits brilliantly with the topic for Key Stage 1 of ‘Holidays’. Key stage 2 began their topic of ‘Rainforests’ with a fantastic visit to the Cambridge botanical gardens, where they went with our partnership schoolBildeston, and had a fantastic day looking at the most amazing plants from all over the world. Our little kitchen is back in use and the children have been making some tasty cheese straws. Next week we will be using the produce from our allotment to make some runner bean chutney for sale at the craft fair on the 4th October in the village hall. Before the Summer holidays we enjoyed a fantastic sports week. Children participated in all sorts of sports, and we had a lot of help from local coaches, so that the pupils enjoyed horseriding, bowls, gymnastics and had a fantastic sports day. Sport is something we really enjoy at Whatfield, and it’s not just the children. Our HLTA, Miss Jones, has been running a keep fit club on Thursdays at 4pm. It is open to adults from the local community and costs just £2 per session, all ages and abilities welcome. We are also proud to be associated with Mr Cotter’s marathon attempt to raise money for the parents and friends of the school. He has 3 more marathons to race, and has completed one a month for almost a year. If you would like to support him you can do so easily by donating on his justgiving page http://www.justgiving.com/fows2015. This terms topic on space has been a real success, as have some of the Art and Maths projects that have been going on around the school. We want our pupils to be the best they can be. If you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school, you are always welcome. We are holding a special Macmillan coffee morning on Tuesday 6th October where you can enjoy a cup of tea, raise money for Macmillan and also have a tour of the school. Please telephone 01473 823 309 or use our website link www.whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk to make an appointment. Lynne Golding, Headteacher

Newton Green Juniors do it again

Newton Green has defeated Ufford Park in the Suffolk Junior Team Handicap cup to add another trophy to a golden season for the club’s juniors. The sixstrong team now goes forward to represent the county at Warley Park in the Eastern Region qualifying round of the Home Counties Championship on September 27. Newton has already won the three-player Suffolk team handicap (Stableford) cup and finished fourth out of 33 teams in the national final. This comes in a year when Newton’s Ellie Aldous is captain of the county’s junior girls, and Alice Barlow has won both the stroke and match play junior titles, as well as both continuing to represent the county ladies team. The latest stroke play team success was staged at Hintlesham, and Newton overcame Ufford, who they also beat in the Stableford final. The latest encounter was in doubt until late in the match, as several games went to the final few holes. With Jed Seeley, James Cooper and Kieron Sorrell having established a 3 – 1 lead, but Ufford performing strongly in the final two games, it needed the one-up Oli Page to gain at least a half from the remaining two holes to get Newton over the line. As it happened, an unfortunate mix up led to both Page and Mat McCreal playing the wrong balls. The Newton player was awarded the hole as his opponent had offended first, giving Newton overall victory. In the sixth match, Alex Iveson was two down, also on the 17th, but with the match decided, his game was conceded. Junior captain Connor Talbot, who did not appear in the final, but had played in two previous rounds, received the trophy from Suffolk Golf Union president Phil Platten. Scores. Newton names first: Seeley won 2 & 1 to Harry Fricker, Watts lost one down to George Fricker, Cooper won 5 & 4 to Tripp, Sorrell won one up to Robertson, Page won 2 & 1 to McGreal, Iveson lost 2 & 1 to Smith.

Prizewinning Ladies from Hintlesham Golf Club Alison Mitchell and Jill Smith qualified for the National Grand Final of the Ping Ladies Fourball Better Ball Competition which was held recently at Guiseborough near Doncaster. Hundreds of golf clubs around the UK held a qualifying competition at their own clubs and the top 50 qualifiers are invited to play in the final. Returning a superb score of 40 points Ali and Jill won 9th place in the Grand Final. The girls said it was a wonderful experience and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Jill too has much to celebrate as its her 65th birthday this year and this was the icing on the cake for her special year.

Stoke by Nayland Golf Club Norman Plum Trophy win Stoke by Nayland Golf Club have won their first Essex County trophy after only seven years as members of the Essex Golf Union. Stoke Ladies have also been successful in 2015, winning the Bronze Shield, so this second win has made it a wonderful season for the club. In previous rounds the Norman Plum matches are played, simultaneously, home and away but in the final there is one neutral venue. The final was played on Sunday 13th September, against the very strong Chigwell Golf Club. The match was very competitive but Stoke were always in control. Tim Dickens and Dean Brace were the lead players out, and did not disappoint, going on to win 2 up. The second pair, Dan Goddard and Dan Brown, made their match look easy when they were five holes up after nine, going on to win 4 and 2. It was a different story for the third pair Trevor Warren and Ian Benson, who found themselves in a very tight match but they showed great resolve to win two up. Marcus Harden and Craig Morton were all square at the turn but managed to secure the fourth, and winning, point on the 17th hole. With the match won the Essex County officials called in the remaining matches but Gary Thomson and Chris Williamson had also won 4 and 2 and Keith Hodgson and Steve Evans were also two up with three to play. Team Captain John Sandford was presented with Norman Plum Trophy to cap a wonderful year for Stoke by Nayland Golf Club.
