Preparations for the 176th Hadleigh Show on Saturday 16th May are nearly complete and we hope you will join us for a great family day out at Holbecks Park.

Hadleigh’s “Year of the Sheep” will be launched at the show so make sure you visit their marquee to find out about what is planned for the town. The Education Tent will also be filled with sheep from many of our local primary schools.

The top 30 Programme entry covers will be on display; spot the winning entry printed on the front cover of the Show Programme. The Grand Ring will welcome the Inch Perfect Motorcycle Trials Display team with their exhilarating action packed display of balance, skill and extreme bike control. These two highly enthusiastic and talented young stunt riders will perform tricks and jumps up massive vertical steps and a whole variety of other manoeuvres you wouldn’t even think possible!

Following last year’s successful machinery demo, this year we will be showcasing Sugar Beet production where you will discover that a mouse doesn’t always have whiskers and a tail! New this year are 2 Food Courts with seating, where the best of our local caterers will tempt you with a range of food for breakfast, lunch or tea. The Food Hall will also showcase the very best local food and drink producers, tempting you to sample and buy.

Race Night for ‘WomenVCancer Cycle Africa 2015 Challenge’ On Saturday 21st March at Nayland Village Hall, a Race Night was held to raise funds for ‘WomenVCancer Cycle Africa 2015 Challenge’.

The event was well supported and greatly enjoyed by eighty people and a tasty fish and chip supper was cooked on site by ‘Smallfry’ a mobile business from Bungay, which was followed by delicious ice-creams from Aldeburgh. Gill Dutton would like to thank everyone who supported the event, purchased and named horses and the six businesses who kindly sponsored a race each: Hadleigh Kitchens, The Travel Stop, and The Kings Head, Beaumont, Seymour Accountants, HSJ Dental, Colchester, and Mike Hatton of BFP Wealth Management of Sudbury. She would also like to thank Keith Avis Printers who printed and donated stunning Race Cards!

A dozen businesses generously donated superb prizes for the prize draw and each winning horse owner was presented with a bottle of ‘Bubbly’. The total amount raised on the night was an amazing £2,035.00.

Charlie Townsend Following Charlie's funeral, donations totalling £792.14 were sent to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Wendy, Anna, Lizzie and family would like to thank everyone who donated - It is heartwarming to know that Charlie was so well liked that such a wonderful amount was given to this worthy cause.

A coffee and cakes morning was held on Thursday 19th March 2015 in Monks Eleigh where coffee and many delicious cakes were consumed. These had mainly been baked and donated by some of those attending and there was a very impressive array. A tombola added to the fun and most people went home with a prize or two. The event was held to mark “Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month” and to raise funds for two charities, Ovacome and Macmillan. The funds for Macmillan are being used towards the funding of the new cancer centre at Ipswich Hospital which will make such a difference to those affected by cancer. A total of £141 was made on the day with further donations still to come from those who couldn’t attend.

Lovis Passfield-Taylor, who organised the event was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in September 2012 and is currently receiving further chemotherapy at Ipswich Hospital. She said it is crucial that women can recognise the early symptoms of ovarian cancer which are often quite vague and are listed below.

Leavenheath Open Gardens & Magna Carta Scarecrow Day Sunday June 14th 11:00 – 5:00pm To celebrate the sealing of Magna Carta, Leavenheath village in Suffolk which is 8 miles north of Colchester on the A134 close to Constable Country, will be commemorating the event with a number of gardens being open. An exhibition in the village hall of the 25 Baron shields painted by a cross section of the community with an explanation of who each Baron was and where he came from in England. Scarecrows with a medieval theme will be in the village with clues to solve. A dateline showing the key dates on how the Magna Carta influenced our democracy, especially the part Suffolk played in the meeting of the Barons in November 1214 at Bury St Edmunds will be on display. A full size brass rubbing of a Knight who is buried locally will be shown together with other Magna Carta information. A choir will be singing period songs in one of the open gardens and visitors will be able to visit a medieval house of the 14th century. This is a charitable event with all profit from the event after expenses, being divided between Leavenheath Scouts/Cubs/Beavers and the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice. Hadleigh & District Probus Club The object of the Club, established in 1998, is "To promote fellowship amongst retired and semi-retired professional and business men".

Following the change in venue at the start of 2014 we have been meeting at The George, High Street, Hadleigh, where Tori and Paul have continued to make us welcome on the third Wednesday of each month and provide us with good meals. Following our happy experience in 2013 we visited the Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club again last year for our Ladies Lunch on 6th August. Our high expectations were well met by an excellent meal in elegant surroundings and on a perfect day weatherwise. This year we again held our customary Annual Dinner in the Town Hall Dining Room on 1st April. The turnout of members and guests were well served by Angel Delights of Hadleigh. We had two lunchtime speakers during the year. In November Councillor Mrs. Angland, Hadleigh Town Mayor, was our guest at lunch and in January Steve Laing, the landlord of the Queen’s Head, Layham, gave us a talk on his experiences during the Falklands conflict. We lost a founder member and past Chairman of the Club: Peter Castle died last August but at the ripe old age of 95 his funeral was more an occasion for celebrating his life rather than mourning his passing.

The number of members in the Club is limited, mostly by the accommodation available for lunch, but we have room for a few more. Any person interested in joining should, in the first instance, contact the Secretary, Chris Drake, on 01473 808147, email chrisdrake29@talktalk.net.

Polstead Art Group 2015 Exhibition Our 15th Exhibition will be held in Polstead Village Hall on Saturday 25th July from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday 26th July from 11 am to 5 pm. Admission is free. Pictures on view and for sale. Homemade refreshments available.

I'm really pleased to say that on April 11th, I complete the world's toughest foot race the Marathon Des Sables in pretty brutal and extreme conditions as described by the great explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes who also managed to complete the race as “more hellish than hell”.

I experienced daytime temperatures peaking at 53 degrees (127 fahrenheit) a total distance of more than 250 km the equivalent to 6 marathons in 6 days, a very long 92km in one day, and climbing three mountains in one day each the size of Mt Snowden all whilst carrying a backpack with everything I needed to survive. I was presented with the most challenging situations my mind and body have ever experienced, I was in some pretty dark places that I needed to pull myself through in order to finish but the end result was worth it. We have raised over £8000 for the NSPCC which is what this really was all about.

This year long journey has been pretty extreme with some big sacrfices with family time with the training being mostly 7 days a week sometimes running twice a day, and the ongoing commitment for the charity work.

But what I can now say from experience is to really challenges yourself and try something different, put yourself in a place where you have never been before, the feeling you will get that achievement is like nothing else, you will have a new outlook and slant on life. My wife and children have been with me all the way on the year long journey and to them I am deeply grateful, without them it would not have been possible.

News from St. Margaret's Church, Whatfield Following on from our successful Cheese & Wine evening, which raised an amazing £930 in February, our next fundraising event is to be on Saturday 23rd May, when we welcome the popular and talented Hadleigh Community Choir to our Village Hall, which promises to be an enjoyable evening of summertime music. A mixed choir of about 35 will perform a varied mix of songs – well known, classic favourites, traditional folk, popular and there will be opportunity for an audience sing along. Hadleigh Community Choir have a high reputation for providing good entertainment, and are noted for all they do to raise charity funds. Tickets are £7 pounds to include refreshments, from Diane Armour on 01473 822000 or from other members of the Parochial Church Council. A bar will be available too.

Mandy’s Walk for JDRF at Partridges On Saturday 4th April 2015 Mandy from Partridges Machinery Department took to the treadmill to raise funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). JDRF is a charity close to her heart which researches to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes.

Mandy set off at 8 am on the treadmill in the Machinery Department window as customers came in to guess how far she would walk in the day. At around 3 pm Mandy was doing well until the treadmill decided to stop, so she took to the High Street walking up and down with a bucket to get more donations for this worthy cause. By the end of the day she had clocked up 23.98 miles, worn out the treadmill but also raised a fantastic £540.22 for JDRF with more money still coming in.

Mandy would like to thank all the Partridges customers for their generous donations and Partridges staff for helping her raise this fantastic sum of money.

We would like to thank Mandy for arranging this event and putting in so much effort to make this work. Keep your eyes peeled for the next Partridges fund raising event.

Looking After The Hearts Of Suffolk Do you have a heart condition? Do you know anyone with a heart related illness that could benefit from exercise and support? Upbeat Heart Support has meetings at The Delphi Club in Sudbury on a Tuesday morning. If you feel you could do with a bit of support, come along and see us. We have a Cardiac Nurse present all morning and our exercises are designed specifically for heart patients lead by BACR trained Instructor. Plenty of members who have been through the same thing who you can have a chat and cup of coffee with.

Upbeat Heart Support in West Suffolk is a self financing charity and provides rehabilitation exercise classes for patients with heart and related illnesses.

Race Night to raise funds for research into Vasculitis Vasculitis - Not a commonly known condition, even GP’s would only encounter this devastating condition once or twice in their whole career. The vasculitis range is vast from very mild (which my 5 year Grandson has contracted) up to acute, which is what my Brother Paul died of in September last year. Often associated with other conditions including cancer, my Brother first suffered from Arthritis, which progressed to polymynosis (arthritis in the muscles’s) then vasculitis. It was lovely to motor to Thursford on Easter Sunday. Yes, that is where the fantastic Christmas Show is held and the rest of the year the Wurlitzer cinema organ is played twice daily by Robert Wolfe who is one of the leading cinema organists and who has been playing the mighty Wurlitzer at Thursford since 1981. His dexterity on the keyboard and pedals alike was absolutely breath-taking. The collection amassed by George Cushing includes carousels, steam organs and there are some shops. We enjoyed beverages and a light lunch in the limousine. I had a thoroughly enjoyable visit but my chauffeur Frank finds a run of several hours quite tiring these days.

Frank and Maria have been on their knees propagating in the kitchen garden for the Summer. The Essex Section of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club contributes to the Walton and Frinton Lifeboat. And so it was that on the Section’s visit to the lifeboat that I won a place to go to sea on board. I was concerned that my best shoes should not be water-logged but my wellies sorted that and I alighted bone dry. The picture shows me on the deck. The engines were unleashed and we powered through the sea off Walton pier at 25 knots. We were seated in special captain’s chairs with computer screens in front. It was quite an experience.

Synergy Café in Hadleigh “Welcoming people living with dementia and their family and friends”.

Sue Ryder run the Synergy Café in Hadleigh which is held each Thursday at the Ansell Community Centre from 11am – 3pm, it is a place to relax, make new friends, share experiences, learn new things, music, singing, games, art and craft and generally spend time in a supportive environment – refreshments and light lunches are available. The Café has been running successfully for over a year and a half now, and a large part of that success is due to the wonderful people who attend and who really get involved in making the Café special. For example, recently two family carers organised an Easter raffle and managed to amass a truly impressive number of prizes and raise £60 for the café’s funds.

The Synergy team members work hard to make this a place that people enjoy coming week after week and were delighted to have been selected as one of the Mayors charities of the year. The Synergy café are also hosting the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance community event at 11am on Thursday 21st May. All welcome to attend this event.

I couldn’t help it! I just had to take a nap in my new igloo and that pompous puss rattled off April’s news! Mind you, it is a lovely, cosy bed sent in by my Kettlebaston fans, Peter and Val so I don’t really mind, and Ollie (the Black) Cat did a good job last month.

My canine pals and I enjoy playing outside on warm, dry days, finishing up with a thorough dust bath! Some of our supporters are also busy in the garden, growing plants for the Leavenheath Open Gardens Day on 14th June.

Visitors can look around the Sanctuary on the day, and browse our gardening stall. Prior to that, the volunteers will be holding a two day Bank Holiday garage sale at SESAW from 10am to 1pm on 23rd and 24th May. Thank you to everyone who helped raise £1054 at our Easter Fayre in March.

Some of our volunteers (and a couple of SatNavs!) didn’t know the location of Whatfield before the first day of Spring. They do now, and waxed lyrical about the lovely Village Hall and customers!

At the time of writing permanent homes are needed for a selection of animals including a pair of degus and several rabbits. We also need more volunteers in the mornings to care for the animals and walk dogs. If you can spare three hours to help once a week please leave your details on the answerphone.

I’m off for a run around the garden with my friends and I hope you didn’t believe the story Ollie told you last month? I was just checking the bait was tasty enough when they found me in the trap. Anyway, the silly thing must have been faulty to catch me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua!

Tales From The Woodshed….

The Chestnuts Woodturning Club meets at the United Reformed Church, Community Room in Hadleigh and holds a club night on the third Thursday of every month.

In March our members were treated to an extremely competent demonstration from Simon Hope, a local professional turner. His ability to hold the attention of club members whilst working at the lathe and keeping us amused was truly worthy of the title ‘Professional”. It was a great night sharing turning techniques and experiences. He made two items, an offset turned candle stick and a scalloped dark stained bowl. In the time available neither of these items were wax, oil or acrylic finished but his ability to encourage us all to try these methods was good to witness. The photographs of his work on the night explain all!

This month, April 16th, Graham Slaughter a well respected amateur turner, demonstrated how to turn a lidded string box from an old mahogany table leg, this was recycling in action. Graham used various hollowing tools and chucking techniques in completing the task but because he was using mahogany he only briefly used abrasive on the work piece to limit the wood dust and of course it wasn't surface finished. Graham also brought along a selection of boxes he had made and finished.

Next month, on 16th May one of our more talented club members and AWGB Branch Secretary, Brian Partridge will be turning items (including jewellery) using Plywood.

As I said last month we have members from Hadleigh and surrounding villages, it’s a very friendly and sociable club so if you have a woodshed that is currently under utilised or you are harbouring a desire to give woodturning a go, why not come along and see us.

In early June this year local men Lester Bennett and Dean Nuttall plan to become pirates in the Scottish highlands when they aim to complete the Great Glen Waterway in order to raise money in aid of Macmillan cancer and also Leukaemia & Lymphoma research charities.

Alas this won’t be done in a Spanish galleon called the Black Pearl.. more a hand paddled 16 ft open canoe and will involve a weeklong trip covering 100 km (65 miles) of the Caledonian canal, wild camping on the loch side and carrying all supplies and utilities with them.

A day on the farm and river for Autistic Society Rosa Simon Music Workshop & Concert Saturday June 6th 2015

Volunteer guides from River Stour Boating and members of the West Suffolk Branch of the National Autistic Society get ready to paddle Youngsters and adults from the West Suffolk Branch of the National Autistic Society enjoyed a day of outdoor activities on the banks of the River Stour recently. The day-long event at Rushbanks Farm and Campsite, near Bures, included canoe trips, nature walks, art lessons and an evening folk concert and barbecue. Gareth Bates, from Rushbanks farm, said: “I was determined to do something positive for the society and all the people they support so brilliantly. It was all about having a day of fun in the great outdoors and despite the weather everyone clearly had a great time.” River Stour Boating provided canoes and guides to take paddlers on river trips - some for the first time in their lives.

Steve Mann, River Stour Boating Director, said: “The wind and rain made it quite interesting at times but it was great to see so many people enjoying this beautiful river. It can be a bit daunting if you haven’t canoed before and we were all very impressed with how they were all prepared to give it a try.” A nature walk under the guidance of Neil Catchpole, Project Officer at The Dedham Vale AONB, was followed by an art class with Barri Appleby cartoonist for the Beano and Dandy comics - who showed techniques for drawing animals and birds. Julie Marco, WSBNAS volunteer, said: “It was a wonderful day and we can’t thank Gareth and all the other people who made this very special day possible.”

Solar Power - have your cake and eat it It all started with yet another cold call, but this one hung around long enough to say you get paid for what you generate even if you consume it. Roly's immediate reaction was that he had seen a flypast of the Pink Arrows.

When he took said person's advice and looked at the website of the Energy Saving Trust he realised the caller was right, but there was other (more useful) advice on that website that the caller had hoped would not be noticed. Among these little gems was inviting lots of prospective contractors to quote.

We sought further advice from Steve Cutmore at TSB and came away comfortable in the knowledge that there was a better return to be had on our money. By the time the salesman arrived from the cold call firm we had quotes for two different systems in the bag. This bloke arrived on horseback sporting platinum spurs on his boots; he was selling an electrical installation & didn't understand the difference between wiring something in parallel or in series. He could only offer one system and took very little time offering us a 20% discount on the bargain price of £12,500, providing we signed up that day. Little did he know that we had been quoted £5,800 for a similar system, and had concluded that a slightly more expensive system would work better on our site. This firm had some amazing subcontractors, though: they could arrive on site, erect a scaffold, fit 16 photovoltaic panels, wire them up and be gone with their scaffold in 3 hours. Another firm managed to quote without a site visit; needless to say this didn't inspire us with confidence.

We eventually narrowed our 5 chosen candidates to two, neither of whom use subcontractors. One was in Ipswich, the other in Hadleigh, & the monetary differential between quotes for like systems was not worth considering. Energy on Tap got the job as they were nearest, and we are most satisfied with the workmanship and attention to detail. However it did take 4 days.

Now for the bottom line. Our system came to £7,100. That money was earning 39p a day in a cash ISA. Right now we are generating some 22 KwH a day and using very little in the way of chargeable units from our energy supplier during the day. For every unit we generate we receive a government subsidy of 15.8p; this is called the feed-in tariff or FIT. At current rates we are receiving some £3.50 day - better than 39p; but wait for it: it is index linked for 20 years and tax exempt. Ho!ho!ho!

Another month gone by and another marathon completed. By the time you all read this Gary Cotter will have completed his 4th marathon, this one slightly closer to home in Bungay. Again his family will be supporting him with all his efforts not only during the marathons but all the hours of training he has had to complete.

Gary's dedication and commitment to completing this challenge and raising funds for Whatfield School is very much appreciated. Hadleigh & District Footpath Volunteers Our walk this month will be on Sunday 17th. It will be one of David Warner special interest walks. We will leave Hadleigh by Coach from the bus station (Co-op side) at 9 am and travel to Lovers Lane, Leiston. We will then walk to Eastbridge via Minsmere, Dunwich, and Westleton. We will stop for lunch at the 18th century smugglers pub the Eels Foot. After lunch we will walk to Sizewell via Minsmere Sluice for the return coach ride to Hadleigh, arriving back around 4pm. This walk is 10 miles in length, and the total walking time should be about 4 hours. The cost of this trip will be £5, and we will need at least 20 participants to make it financially viable. Please contact David Warner by the 10th. May if you will be joining us on this walk.

This is one of the loveliest walks in Suffolk, and it will be well worth the effort.

Patient Participation Group (PPG) Are you interested in having your say?

Our virtual patient participation group was formed in 2011, with the intention of our patient members becoming a more integral part of our practice.

Members of the PPG will become involved in the range and quality of the services we provide and to take part in the decision making process that leads to a change in our existing services. The PPG can take a leading part in developing patient surveys, sharing results, newsletters and patient feedback.

As a practice we want to expand our PPG to help develop and improve the group further. We are looking to change from a virtual group, to one where we meet together face to face. It is our aim that we have a broad range of patient members to get a true representative group.

We intend to co-ordinate and chair these meetings initially although it is hoped that a natural patient Chair will emerge. The terms of the group and the frequency of the meetings can be agreed together, when we first meet.

If you are a patient at Hadleigh or Boxford, you are passionate and committed to improving quality care and you would like to volunteer to be part of our PPG, then we would like to hear from you.

We have been working incredibly hard on various tasks; Bill and Tim pictured below, the re-cogging of the Pitwheel continues and is worth a visit if only to see the craftsmanship within this exercise alone.

We expect to have the waterwheel turning by water; this will be the first opportunity in the past 100 years or so, for everyone to see the amazing strength and energy created by a few inches of water.

We have been doing considerable works to the wheel house; those who have previously visited on one of our open days will recall the numerous trip hazards and the lack of health and safety that existed in the early 1800’s.

Pictured is George who managed to spare us some time over the last few weekends to help with reinstament of walls and floors, George is normally building extension, installing drives repairing roofs and doing all manner of building tasks, we are extremely grateful to G.B Property Services for all the help with the mill as we are with the help we have received from Bill Griffiths and Tim West and many others who have helped with hands on tasks and fund raising, the progress that can be seen today is a real credit to all those that are helping with the restoration of this piece of Suffolk history…Thank you.

Stretching is vital for muscle health. Whether you are a professional athlete, play amateur football, hockey, rugby or basketball, a keen cyclist, runner or swimmer, even if you are just walking the dog every day, no matter what your level of fitness keeping muscle flexibility is key to good muscle health.

Stretching before exercise helps prepare the body for activity by increasing the circulation of blood to the muscles and clearing the lymphatic system around the soft tissues. Stretching helps increase flexibility and joint range of movement preventing injury and improving muscle and joint performance.

HOW TO STRETCH GENTLY and SLOWLY take each muscle to the point when you start to feel a resistance, GENTLY hold the stretch for 30 to 60 seconds, allowing the muscle to release and grow longer. DO NOT cause yourself any pain – there’s no need.

CAREFUL - If you take the stretch too far you can cause an inflammatory response, meaning your body will try to repair the damage. Every time you feel pain when stretching you are actually causing damage to the soft tissue.

Stretching is also used in the treatment of injuries and the rehabilitation from injury or surgery. I use stretching within part of my treatment plans for anyone who is injured and by using a number of stretching techniques maximum performance is quickly and successful regained.

Asparagus with Hollondaise Sauce

Recipe for Success

If my husband listens to anything I say, and let’s face it, there’s always a first time, then by the time this goes to print, we should have embarked on a pick you own asparagus adventure somewhere in our

by Sarah Thompson beautiful county. Much as I love asparagus, I refuse to eat anything but seasonal. Don’t worry if you don’t have a culinary asparagus cooker, boiling it in a saucepan is just as good, but do ensure you smother it in hollandaise sauce. Oh how I love the merry month of May. The Hadleigh show is a wonderful opportunity to see the reason why we should all grow local, eat local and support our local traders. BASIL! Buy And Source It Locally – or in this case, sauce it locally. Somebody stop me before I get too political.

Ingredients 500ml white wine vinegar, 1 tbsp peppercorns Bunch tarragon, 3 large free-range egg yolks 200ml melted unsalted butter., Squeeze of lemon juice Method Boil the vinegar together with peppercorns and tarragon, reduce by half. Boil a large pan of water, then reduce to a simmer. Using a large balloon whisk, beat together the egg yolks and 2 tsp of the reduced wine vinegar in a heatproof bowl that fits snugly over the pan. (Think bain-marie). Beat vigorously until the mixture forms a foam, but make sure that it doesn’t get too hot. To prevent the sauce from overheating, take it on and off the heat while you whisk, scraping around the sides with a plastic spatula. The aim is to achieve a golden, airy foam (called a sabayon), which forms ribbons when lifted. Note - if the sauce mixture starts to ‘split’ or curdle, immediately scrape the mixture into a clean bowl and whisk in an ice cube or 1 tbsp ice-cold water, then continue whisking in the remaining butter just a ladleful at a time.

Whisk in a small ladle of the warmed butter, a little at a time, then return the bowl over a gentle heat to cook a little more. Remove from the heat again and whisk in another ladle of butter. Repeat until all the butter is incorporated and you have a texture as thick as mayonnaise. Finally, whisk in lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste plus a little warm water from the pan if the mixture is too thick.

The new auction house will throw open its doors to members of the public looking to sell or have valued their antique items, jewellery, watches and much more. Bishop & Miller Auctioneers is based on the Charles Industrial Estate in Stowmarket and will be offering Fine Art & Antique sales throughout the year. The new business venture will see a minimum of 6 auctions a year with the aim to holding them every month as business gathers pace. Taking pride in keeping Suffolk safe

SUFFOLK CONSTABULARY The county of Suffolk has always been a low crime area and a safe and beautiful place to live and work. Suffolk Constabulary is committed to ensuring it stays that way. Unfortunately over the past couple of months the Western area has suffered a significant increase in burglary dwelling offences. Since the 1st January this year, there have been 66 burglaries across both the Babergh and Mid Suffolk districts. Offences are occurring during both the daytime and the evening, and jewellery is the main item stolen. It is believed offenders are becoming more risky when committing offences and there may be times when local residents have seen the offender(s) in the area.

Suffolk Police would like to remind local residents that if they see any people or vehicles that look out of place or which raise suspicions please telephone on 101 with any information such as time, location, clothing or registration details. Always 999 however if an offence is taking place.

Taking just a few steps can make a big difference in keeping your home safe from burglary: • Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you’ve just popped out to the neighbours, or are working in the garden, remembering to double-lock UPVC doors (lift handle and turn the key).

• Consider upgrading locks if they do not reach current British Standards or Kite Marked approved, and fit window locks with keys to all downstairs windows and those upstairs that are easy to reach from flat roofs etc.

• Remove all keys from view, including car keys, and keep them out of sight but nearby should you need them for safety or fire risks.

• Install an intruder alarm in the property, with a visual external box to deter offenders before they even try to set foot on the property. Look on www.nsi.org.uk or www.ssaib.org for police approved alarm companies that operate in your local area.

• Install good outside lighting such as ‘dusk till dawn’ lights at the front door(s) and on your garages and sheds. Leave radios or lights in your house on a timer to make the property appear occupied.

• Remove valuables from view and store any jewellery in a properly secured safe bolted to the wall and floor. At the very least, place jewellery in an obscure location in the house that wouldn’t be found by an offender.

• Keep ladders, tools and loose bricks locked away; don't leave them outside where they could be used to break into your home.

• Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property.

• Mark your property with your postcode and house number in a UV pen and register your property for free with www.Immobilise.com (UV pens can be purchased for £1 from Sudbury, Hadleigh, Stowmarket, Elmswell, Eye, Needham Market and Debenham Police Stations).

• Alternatively a forensic property marking solution such as www.smartwater.com could be purchased.

• Consider joining or forming a Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) scheme. Please call your local NHW Officer on 101 if you’d like more information.

Full Steam Ahead at Bridge Farm Barns Following a very successful event last year, Monks Eleigh Bygones Collectors Club (M.E.B.C.C) are returning to Bridge Farm Barns (Corn Craft) on Sunday 10th May with an exhibition of their vintage machinery which include steam engines, cars, tractors & motorcycles plus displays of other bygone collectables. Laura worked as a Specialist Community Podiatrist for the NHS for 10 years, where she managed high risk patients alongside routine foot care. She is an experienced Podiatrist who is able to assess, treat, and provide advice on a wide range of foot problems such as, callous (hard and thickened skin), corns, in-growing toenails, fungal nails, verrucae’s and basic nail care/cutting.

Mark has worked as a Biomechanical and Musculoskeletal Podiatrist for the past 11 years. He was a clinical lead in the NHS for 10 years to both adult and children services, worked as a clinical lecturer at Cardiff Metropolitan University, and in 2012 completed his MSc in Clinical Podiatric Biomechanics.

For the past two years he has been employed by the Ministry of Defence and works as the regional Podiatrist to East Anglia and the South East. Mark regularly delivers training to Physiotherapists and Doctors within the MoD and is actively involved in research and audit to develop new treatment protocols for running injuries.

Mark can assess for a range of lower limb injuries, sports injuries and problems associated with biomechanics and gait analysis (walking/running assessment). Treatments may include footwear advice, exercise and stretching programs, gait and running education/advice, and if required insoles/orthoses, bracing or footwear modifications.

Whose Future? Whose Planet?

How & Why Tackle Climate Change On Saturday 13th June from 10 am to 1.00 pm, St Mary’s Church in Hadleigh, Suffolk, will host “Whose Future? Whose Planet?” - a talk and workshop on climate change led by guest speaker Colin Bell MSc MA, a researcher, writer and editor of two books on faith and environment issues at the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion, Cambridge University. The meeting will be chaired by the Very Rev. Martin Thrower.

The event, sponsored by Hadleigh Thrift Shop, is free to attend and open to anyone interested in climate change, one of the greatest challenges facing humanity this generation. Colin Bell will help us explore a variety of issues including the beauty of the natural world, what we know of climate change and our impact upon it, why it matters and why change has been difficult, and positive ways forward both global and in our local communities to benefit future generations.

Local children and young people will at the same time be celebrating the environment with an exhibition of artworks inspired primarily by the Suffolk landscape and coastline. This exhibition will be hosted by St Mary’s Church.

The exhibition will be held from 4th – 15th June, to coincide with the “Whose Future? Whose Planet” talk and workshop. It will feature artworks by pupils participating in the environment inspired “It’s Our World” art project www.itisourworld.org.uk from Hadleigh High, Beaumont, St Mary’s and Hadleigh Community Primary Schools, as well as by students from Suffolk One Sixth Form College in Ipswich. “Planet Earth is amazing! Hadleigh Community Transport Group Hadleigh Community Transport Group (HCTG) seeks to provide transport for its residents and those in the Lavenham and surrounding areas.

We operate two Links services on behalf of Suffolk County Council (SCC) that, on request, bring passengers from outlying villages without a bus service to where they want to go within a defined area or to connect with bus services for onward travel. For those without access to transport of their own we operate the Dial-a-Ride service in and around Hadleigh. These services use SCC provided and maintained vehicles. We have three sixteen-seater minibuses of our own which we use on the services from Hadleigh to Manningtree and Ipswich, the service from Whatfield to Ipswich and the Ipswich to Shotley service: these are all sponsored by SCC. The vehicles are also used for contract work such as school transport and adults to day services and are available for group hire to organisations in and around Hadleigh e.g. for trips to the theatre or the seaside. HCTG are currently running a pilot operation taking passengers to Ipswich Hospital for appointments. This looks promising and we hope to make it more permanent: look for announcements.

HCTG rely on the drivers we employ to help provide a high level of service and in return we have the policy of paying at least the Living Wage rather than just the legal minimum wage. Because of careful management we are in a position of being able to update our vehicles when necessary.

Our committee are local people from Hadleigh and Lavenham: we are seeking more volunteers to serve on it.

Hadleigh Orchestra Summer Concert at Boxford Church Sunday, June 14th 6.30 p.m.

This year our summer concert will be held in Boxford Church (where we hope parking will be easier than at Polstead). We are going there because one of our main items is the popular Scherzo for piano and orchestra by Litolff (about the only thing he’s remembered for today!), and at Boxford church there is the ideal piano for this work. The other main item will be the last two movements of Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony. This is the very dramatic depiction of a storm and the calm that follows it. The programme will also include Bizet’s ‘Carillon’ and the overture to Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin’ – a real crowd pleaser.

As usual entry is free but we will ask you to contribute to a retiring collection as you leave which will help us to cover our expenses and enable us to make a donation to the church.

Traction ’15 - A Hundred Years of Tractors On Sunday 10th May, the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket will be hosting TRACTION’15 - a hundred years of tractors. This event will draw together a range of tractors, including examples seen at work in the fields of Suffolk during the last 100 years.

Vehicles on display will include the Museum’s Burrell Ploughing engines, some of the earliest surviving engines to come out of the factory at Thetford, Norfolk, as well as a working steam tractor and early petrol tractors that take us through both World Wars and into the days after WW2 when every farm moved from horse to tractors.

Barry Salmon, Steam and Grease Team volunteer at the museum says “We have many local supporters who have wonderful collections of tractors. This will be a unique and fascinating event that shows how tractors have changed over the last 100 years.”

There will be demonstrations of different aspects of tractor development, including cultivation activities in one of the Museums demonstration fields. We will also be offering the chance to win a ride in the ‘jump seat’ of a modern 250 horsepower Case while it struggles through the heavy clay lands of the Museum site! Traction ‘15 coincides with National Mills Weekend, so the Alton Watermill at the Museum will be in action with demonstrations of corn sacks being lifted to the top of the mill using just water power. If you enjoy the roar of a tractor or want to know more about these fabulous machines, the Museum of East Anglian Life is the place to be on the 10th May. We look forward to seeing you there!

The event will be opened by Lesley Dolphin of BBC Radio Suffolk and there will be cooking demonstrations by local chefs on the stage outside compered by Mark David and inside the church there will be cooking demonstrations by Neff Appliances organised by KSL Sudbury. Men and women can choose to walk or run one of three new and improved routes which all start and finish at Ipswich Town Football Club; the five mile, eight mile, or the more challenging half marathon. Gavin Lamb, event organiser, said: “The Midnight Walk is fast approaching and we’re all getting really excited for the biggest and best night of the year! “We’ve already got over 1,200 people signed up and that number is going up all the time – so sign your crew up now.” Pirate fancy dress is optional, but if you do want to dress up, then head to your nearest St Elizabeth Hospice shop where you can get your hands on an array of pirate fancy-dress all for £5 and under. As the 2015 visit of the children approaches again this year we are once more appealing for donations of clothing. These children really do arrive with nothing except the clothes they travel in so if anyone has anything that they could donate to these children 14 girls and 4 boys, requiring clothes of age sizes 6 to 13 , we would be very grateful. Summer and Winter clothes are appreciated as although they visit us in the summer they return home to winters that often are colder than minus 25 degrees! When this article goes to publication three of the Charities representatives will be in Belarus where we will have the opportunity of meeting with the children who have been selected by the local authorities. This will be the second group we will bring from this area but still many of the parents are very concerned as they do not know where or to whom their children are going. Our job will be to explain our program and reassure them that their children will be looked after as part of the family they will join. We have many exciting experiences lined up for the Children this year including a trip to a Camel Oasis and we also hope to repeat our great experience of last year being a trip to London.

This was so successful that our Sponsors have very kindly offered to repeat the event for 2015. The Leaders who came with the children said it was an extremely educationally beneficial event as well as a tremendous day out.

Another new fundraising event this year is to be a “Big Barn Bash” on June 28th. This will be a Barn Dance with a Country & Western Theme, outdoor open fire cooking and dancing to a 6 piece band, Box Car Kelly & the Railroaders. Further details will be given in next months newsletter or can be obtained from our website under the Fundraising Heading. Rosa’s Fund: biggest donation to date to launch Hadleigh Junior Choir A fund set up in memory of a small Hadleigh girl killed in a tragic accident last year has confirmed that it will be underwriting the launch of the town’s first ever junior community choir. The Rosa Simon Music Fund, which has received close to £15,000 in donations from many individuals and organisations since Rosa died in June 2014, has already supported 14 projects to the value of £4000. Now it can confirm that it will be donating £1500 to help the Hadleigh Community Choir realise a longstanding ambition to establish a junior choir for singers aged between eight and 16. The money will be used to fund a musical director as well as the costs of music and hiring rehearsal space, plus those associated with putting on two concerts at both Christmas this year and during the summer of 2016.

Paul Simon, Rosa’s father, explained why the fund founded in his three and a half year-old daughter’s name wanted to back this venture: “Rosa simply adored singing. We believe that under the wise and enthusiastic guidance of the well-established and respected Hadleigh Community Choir, the children and young people of the town and the surrounding villages will have the perfect chance to learn the joys of singing different types of music together.

“We hope that with the backing of the Fund for the first year, this choir will be a positive and enduring reminder of Rosa and all that she meant to both her family and the very many people who knew her and are still inspired by her”.

Peter Finch, Chairman of the Hadleigh Community Choir said ““It has always been the aim of Hadleigh Community Choir to include children up to age 16 and while we had lots of community support and volunteers who wanted to work with the juniors the stumbling block had been raising the money to cover the operating costs. Thanks now to Rosa’s Fund that has all changed. This generous grant will enable us to launch our new Junior Section with a professional music team comprising Alan Humphrey as its Musical Director and Maggie Addison as its Manager.

“The official launch of the Junior Section will be in September 2015 when local eight to 16 year old children and their parents will be invited to come and hear our plans. Rehearsals will start in October and the first appearance of the juniors will be at Hadleigh Community Choir’s official Christmas Concert on Saturday 12th December 2015”.

A budding young actress is celebrating after winning the first award of its kind at a prestigious performing arts festival Zoe Troy, 10, was named the first winner of the Wardale Williams Award for Excellence in Speech and Drama. The award was presented for the first time as part of the long running Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts.

Jan Osborne, chairman of the festival, said: “We are delighted to have been able to introduce this award as part of the festival, which rewards an outstanding performance. The judges and independent adjudicator chose Zoe, who lives in Bury St Edmunds, due to her impressive use of facial expression, which helped her to deliver great stage presence and I would like to congratulate her on such an excellent performance. I would also like to thank Wardale Williams for supporting the festival and allowing us to present this prestigious award.”

The Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts is a competitive festival open to people of all ages. It gives an opportunity for people to perform in front of an audience and to receive an expert and friendly assessment from a professional adjudicator. The festival started in 1922 and now offers about 400 classes in the three main branches of the performing arts; music, dance and speech. People from across the East of England take part in the festival. Martin Russ, Wardale Williams, director, said: “We are delighted to be supporting this important festival, which is an established part of the Sudbury calendar. We often seem to be asking for your support for our fundraising efforts but sadly our expenses never seem to diminish. We have just paid our annual Insurance premium of over £4000 and the cost of hay, feed, Vet, Farrier and general running expenses all add up to around £65,000 a year. We will be at the Hadleigh Show on 16th May selling cakes and plants, so do call in and see us there. We have more congratulations to report this month. Debs Bennett has become a Group Riding Coach and we welcome her into our present team of 12 Coaches who instruct the weekly rides Mondays to Fridays.

Seven of our Riders entered the Dressage Anywhere Competition last month and have all qualified to take part in the National Finals, so we will be video recording their Test again this month to submit to the Judges and await the results with great excitement.

We also congratulate Eunice and our Carriage Driving team who have ensured that Bob has been suitably trained and experienced to enable him to pass his assessment to join the team as a carriage driving horse.

Our summer term is always busy and the warmer weather should allow some of our rides to be out around the fields and beside the river – such a joy for those who are unable to walk on uneven ground to experience the sights and smells of the countryside with the help of four strong legs beneath them.

Building teams at Orchard Barn There are always seasonal projects to get involved with at the Barn. Over the years we have learnt that tasks are completed more quickly if we work as a team. As John Heywood (1497 – 1580) said “Many hands make light work”.

OB uses natural and traditional building projects as a way of bringing people together to learn. And both experts and beginners learn from each other – we all have skills and experience to bring to a project.

Working as a group we chat which makes the time fly by and inevitably there is an element of competition that means the job in hand is completed more quickly.

We enjoy working outside and hearing the sounds of nature all around us including the agricultural background noises We also keep safety in mind and help each other if a large or awkward load needs to be moved.

Being part of a team we share knowledge, have a wide circle of contacts and know where to get resources locally. Each completed project builds selfconfidence and we share our achievements furthering our feelings of camaraderie, friendship, companionship and community.

TV Game Show Crashes Sudbury Website It seems like everyone has an opinion about ITV’s recent addition to Saturday night TV, a quiz show called “You’re Back In The Room”. Hosted by Philip Schofield, the show employs the skills of stage hypnotist Keith Barry to make the games much more difficult. Barry puts contestants into hypnosis and gives suggestions that make them respond in unusual ways, making otherwise simple games much more difficult, with hilarious results. The first program provoked such divided and heated opinion that the show was often referred to as ‘Marmite TV’. Many Hypnotherapists loved it, but many said it was terrible PR for them; many viewers thought it was the best thing on TV, others thought it was all fake. Arguments exploded in pubs, online forums and on social media. Sudbury based hypnotherapist Benjamin Ryan was able to give some insight into these arguments, having been invited to the filming of the first episode, so he wrote a blog post called “You’re Back In The Room – Real or Fake? And other hypnosis questions”. Benjamin said “I expected the post might get a few dozen readers and a few comments, but I was entirely unprepared for what happened!” During the broadcast of episode 2 Keith Barry (the show’s Hypnotist) tweeted a link to Benjamin’s post, with the comment “[Benjamin Ryan] is a hypnotherapist who understands hypnoentertainment vs hypnotherapy. Enquire about the most comfortable deckchair from which to admire the results achieved by one’s spouse.

But let us be a little more serious for a moment. It is very much our hope that a visit to the gardens will give visitors an idea of what they may achieve themselves. Most of the gardens (not all of them) are fairly small, but there is a wide variety of age content and layout. A fine selection of shrubs, herbaceous plants, annuals, fruit and vegetables can all be found and a fair idea obtained concerning what may be expected to flourish in these parts. We have several gardens opening for the first time this year and one or two returning after a year off. The emphasis remains on town gardens. So do come and see us – oh! and the church needs the money for maintenance and repair!

I am sure that most of us will want the historic centre of this lovely old town preserved for the future.

Finally, I am looking for advice about compost heaps and how they work. I have been variously advised that the results are attributable to splendid little pink worms or bacteria or something similar or fungi. Perhaps it is a mix of all three but I would love to know and can only hope that whatever it is, it does not get banned by Brussels because, my goodness me, the results are useful. www.hadleighgardens.co.uk John Hunt

Hadleigh and District Gardening Club Our talk on the 13th of April was by the owners of Shrubland Nurseries who gave a fascinating and informative insight into the many problems of gardening on heavy clay soil, with accompanying slides. This was very relevant to a good few members who suffer from these very conditions, myself included. They also pointed out that Hadleigh has a huge variation in soil types from the said heavy clay right through to sand and gravel -- the Ice Age Melt has a lot to answer for! Like Shrubland Nurseries I suffer from occasional soggy patches developing, despite being on some of the highest land in the district, and with a huge sand pit in the next door field. As it was developed more or less entirely for wildlife, they don't actually complain, although my elderly mini Dachshund does! She doesn't like wet feet, never mind finding herself in the middle of a mini bog with water up to her tum!

Our next meeting is May 11th when we will be hearing all about the growth and development of Hollow Trees Farm. We meet on the second Monday of the month at the town hall at 7.30, with refreshments afterwards and we are always happy to welcome new members.

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts At last I have finished laying the path in my vegetable patch that I started in February last year before my wife broke her elbow. It is lovely to have it finished, and it makes access so much easier. The next job is to redevelop the border that lies between the new path and the hedge. This border was not good before I started work on the path, so it is now a shambles.

This month I managed to do something that I always intend to do, but rarely manage. I visited one of the gardens that I list in the column. I went to Woodwards in Coddenham and found a fascinating long narrow garden full of bulbs in full flower. A lot were planted in the ground, and a lot were in hanging baskets. I liked the effect, but I have rather gone off of hanging baskets because of the effort needed to water them. The garden is open again this month when it will present a very different picture.

For once at I am fairly happy with my garden at the moment. I have lots of colour and the fruit blossom is coming out. There is still lots to do, but providing we have a drop of rain it looks like being a good Summer in the garden.

The 3 monthly total at the end of March was 114.4 mm (4.5") which is about three quarters of the average figure. In March the maximum temperature was 13 Cel (55F) which is lower than usual, and the minimum temperature was 1 Cel (34F) which is warmer than average.

Indeed it is unusual not to get a frost in March. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 10 Cel (50F) . This is slightly warmer than normal.

Hints Garden Centres and Nurseries are now bulging with beautiful plants to tempt us. Before you part with your money, think where the plant is going to go in your garden, and whether it would grow there. Would it be the right size ?

Would the colour of the flowers or foliage fit its surroundings ? Is your soil suitable for it ? Would it get the amount of sun it needs ? Could it cope with the wind that whistles round that corner ? One needs to accept that there are lots of beautiful plants that you have no hope of growing in your particular garden.

As a good general guide the time to prune shrubs is after they have flowered.

So have a look at your forsythias, kerrias, flowering currants and spring flowering spirea, and trim off the flowering shoots, so that they can make new shoots, which will flower next year. There are odd exceptions, so one needs to get to know your plants. I have one variety of forsythia that flowers best on the side shoots of one year old growth. This needs 50% of the shoots cut out each year at this time.

Some varieties of roses are prone to the disfiguring fungus on the leaves called black spot. I do not like spraying, but the way to control this problem is to start early, and spray prone varieties with a fungicide. The same approach applies to hollyhocks which get a fungus called rust which is generally not fatal, but does spoil the apprearance.

Sheep at the Dentist: Drawing on old pom-pom making skills the ladies produced sufficient to cover a defunct CD rack and create an endearing colourful sheep. As part of the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep celebrations, he now stands proudly watching the world go by from the window of Dr Lawrence Werberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dental practice at 62 High Street. There will be others popping up all over the town.

History Boys:- Although the premier of this Alan Bennett play was in 2004 its message and characters are every bit as relevant today as then. This new production at the New Wolsey Theatre by Sell A Door Theatre Company gave a young cast, just embarking on their professional career, an opportunity to show their talents. As high spirited adolescents they certainly did that trying the patience of their more mature members of staff. An entertaining, humorous play with plenty of underlying messages.

The Secret Adversary: Returning to the New Wolsey, members much enjoyed this Watermill Theatre production which was part of the 125th anniversary celebrations of Agatha Christieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s birth. The play follows the daring adventures of Tommy & Tuppence through 1920â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s London. However, this inventive new adaptation was a completely different take on the traditional thriller with fast paced action, comedy, live music and a dash of romance.

Veterinary Anecdotes: Practicing vet, Brian Faulkner, had plenty of hilarious stories relating to his long and varied career throughout the UK. As an accomplished speaker with a gentle Irish lilt he knew exactly how to tell his humorous tales to advantage.

His audience laughed their way through memorable moments which included coping with unusual ailments in domestic animals, a randy camel, a highly spirited horse and the innards of a sick cow. Although Brian still has his own practice in Wickham Market he also specialises in the science of psychology with respect to the veterinary profession. This fascinating new dimension to his work is in great demand both at home and abroad.

Hopefully it will include a second visit to Fidelis.

Brett Vale Golf Club The East Anglian Ladies at Brett Vale Golf Club, Raydon, Suffolk, have raised £1070 for Macmillan Cancer Support. The cheque was presented by 2014 Captain Sue Curran to Macmillan representative Mandy Jordan at a Photo courtesy of E.A.D.T. presentation last week.

Sue said "I selected Macmillan because of it's work with cancer, which most families are touched by. I'm very grateful to all the ladies who gave their time and money so generously to raise this total, which I think is very good for a small club like ours.

Jed Seeley Bags Nine Trophies Jed Seeley, who broke the course record for adults at Newton Green Golf Club during the year, bagged an armful of prizes at the annual presentation for the club's junior section. He collected nine awards, and aims to join the Professional Golfers' Association training scheme with professional Tim Cooper later in the year.

Seeley's awards included being voted junior club person of the year. His other awards included the KVR Trophy, Cooper Trophy, Junior Shield, coaching/skills Award, C List eclectric, Order of Merit and also the S Woodhead doubles knock-out with Harvey Watts. Another major award winner was James Cooper, who is following in the footsteps of his dad Tim, Newton's professional.

Sudbury Bowls Club The new outdoor season has begun for Sudbury Bowls Club on Quay Lane and on a gloriously sunny afternoon the President of the club - Jacqui Edgar, put the first bowl down to signal the opening of the green. 32 players turned out for the occasion and played friendly drawn matches followed by a tea in the clubhouse. Sudbury is well known for having one of the best greens in the county; it looks magnificent this year and is the work of the club greenkeeper Graham Rowland. All the players congratulated him for his hard work over the winter to get the lawn looking so good and playing so well. There will be an open day in May - date to be confirmed - to encourage new players to the club and let’s hope the weather will be as kind as it was for the opening of the green.

On Saturday the 12th April Stoke by Nayland played host to Five Lakes in the opening Jubilee Cup league match, on a very blustery but sunny morning.

6 singles matches playing off scratch (12-16 handicap ) and 3 four ball better ball (17-24 handicap) ¾ handicap matches were played, with each match scoring 1 point for the winner, 0 points for the loser and ½ for a halved match.

The singles got under way with SBN’s Tim Dickens taking a commanding lead, four up by the 13th hole. A spirited come back from Five Lakes’ Danny Owen was soon halted with an excellent par on the 17th, which saw Tim Dickens winning his match 2&1. Don Wiggins out second for SBN found Dave Chignall too hot to handle as the Five Lakes man ran out a 4&3 winner, levelling the overall match to one apiece. The third match out saw Tony Woods of SBN take on Tony Cook, with Woods blitzing his way to an impressive 6&5 win, playing some outstanding tee to green golf, and restoring SBN’s advantage to 2-1.

The fourth singles match paired Danny Goddard of SBN against Pat Sweeney.

A tightly contested match eventually favoured Sweeney as he produced a master class in putting and won the match 4&3 to level the scores overall at 2-2 Daniel Brown of SBN produced the performance of the day. His opponent Andy Lee could only admire the swashbuckling Brown as he produced some near-perfect golf, duly winning his match 7&5 and moving SBN back into the lead 3-2. The last of the singles matches pitted Ian Benson of SBN against Richard Hardy-King in what was arguably the YO-YO singles match of the day.

There was nothing to choose between them as they approached the 17th tee.

Both drove well and found the fairway. Benson to play first struck his second shot into the greenside bunker whilst Hardy-King’s second shot ended at the back of the green - advantage Hardy-King. Benson chipped out of the bunker to within 3 inches of the cup then Hardy-King putted to within 12ft but subsequently missed his par putt and conceded the hole. The 18th hole, which Hardy-King needed to win to halve the match, ended in disappointment for him with Benson winning the hole and the match at 2up, moving SBN into a 4-2 lead.

Then it was the first of the four balls and for SBN it was the ever-dependable Roger Gardiner and Jubilee debutant Damien Slater, playing Clive Jenner and Lee Stafford of Five Lakes. Some scintillating golf from the SBN pairing dealt a devastating blow to Five Lakes as they ran out 5&4 winners, ensuring an unassailable 5-2 lead to SBN in the overall match. The penultimate match saw SBN’s Richard Allen and Keith Hodgson play Peter Dunnett and Dave Parkins. The SBN duo fought their way back from being 2 down with 2 to play to earn a very commendable half. The last game produced the comeback of the day with SBN’s John Sandford and Chris Williamson, who came from 3 down after 9 holes to win 2&1. The pair’s refusal to accept defeat inspired them to some exceptional stroke-making that left their opponents wondering how they lost this match. The overall match score was SBN 6 ½ to Five Lakes 2 ½, a thoroughly entertaining match played in good spirit.

With the arrival of spring it’s all change for Stowmarket Golf Club’s various captains First to take to the fairway was New Seniors’ Captain Jim Deasy. Jim has been an avid golfer since well before his senior days and a very supportive member of the golf club. Having adopted his role at the recent Seniors’ Prize Presentation and AGM during which he was presented with the traditional Captains’ shirt from outgoing Captain Barry Lloyd.

On a bright but slightly chilly morning the New Ladies' Captain, Annie Tyler, was chauffeured in style to the 1st tee by Ladies Section Secretary Linda Gilham driving a golf buggy decorated to resemble a learner driver's car and with Madness - 'Driving in my car' playing over the p.a. system for all to hear. Linda was particularly worried when Annie told her to STOP!! The theme for Annie's Club Captain David Fletcher drive-in was based around her having been a Driving drive-in Instructor and the teeing area was appropriately conedoff. 'L' plates were everywhere and Annie was well supported by many of the club members who turned out to watch her drive-in. Annie, undeterred by the restricting narrow cones, drove straight and true, finishing fairly and squarely on the fairway, a perfect shot. Ladies’ Captain Annie has chosen for her Captain's Charity the Mid Suffolk Citizen's Advice Bureau based in Stowmarket.

The very active junior section has begun its year with the election of Ben Moyes to the role of Captain and Ben will be supported in this important role by vicecaptain Jack Orriss. Ben has been an loyal junior member at Stowmarket for some time, notching up quite a few good competition results along the way and playing to a high standard of golf. In fact Ben got off in fine style to his year by winning the club’s Junior Easter Trophy. Ben is pictured receiving his trophy from club professional Jon Markham.

Completing the foursome the new club captain David Fletcher his year by firstly hosting an excellent lunch for family and friends, followed by an informal speech, prior to being chauffeured to the first tee by vice-captain Ian Harvey in a golf buggy. Vice-Captain Ian Harvey had decided on a theme reflecting the new captain’s 'previous life' as an estate agent and had worked hard on creating a spectacular effect. Ian had also painstakingly placed well over 400 tee pegs into the ground to, helpfully, indicate the direction David should play his shot.

As usual club Manager Geoff Scott tee'd David's ball up and after due encouragement from a good sized crowd he confidently hit the ball a good distance straight down the fairway unfazed by a very strong headwind.

Measured by the pro Jon Markham, the prize of a bottle of champagne for correctly guessing the distance hit went to long serving lady member June Morton who seems to have a talent for this type of prediction as she also won it last year! The raffle for the 12 month personal car parking space was won by lucky member Mike Creffield. Captain David has chosen for his charity, St Nicolas Hospice Care. We wish them all good luck and hope they achieve their fund raising aims.

This is an American Greensomes mixed pairs event played on the Gainsborough course with a shotgun start. There was a good entry of 22 pairs.

Ten Hadleigh Cycling Club members will attempt to ride from Marble Arch to the Arc de Triomphe on 27th June in 24 hours. A distance of 265 miles. The team has undertaken a series of gruelling training rides over the last few months, including 160km to Ely, 225km to Duxford and a trip of 250km up the Suffolk Coast. The riders intend to raise money for the Brendan Oakes Trust.

This Hadleigh based charity is named after a 15 year old who lost his life to cancer in 2005. The charity aims to fund activities for young cancer sufferers and their families.

Lucy Holdaway, the young daughter of a Hadleigh Cycling Club member has raise £84 with a sponsored silence and the pupils of Springfield Juniors in Ipswich have raised nearly £700 with a non-uniform day.
