Local Girls on Scout & Guide International Trips 5 girls from Hadleigh High School have been selected to go on international trips through Scouting and Guiding.

Charlotte Stiff (16), from Sudbury Quay Explorers will be going on a walking expedition in Finland in 2015. Katy Gant (15), from Hadleigh Guides, is going to Mexico to participate in a community project this summer through Guiding. Charlotte Woodmore (16) and Ellenor Norman (16) have been chosen to attend the 23rd International Scout Jamboree in Japan in 2015 through Guiding in Hadleigh. Bethanie Clements (16), from Quay Explorers has been chosen to attend the Scout Jamboree through Scouting with 35 other Scouts from Suffolk. The Japan Jamboree will bring together Scouts and Guides from all over the Globe and will be a life changing experience for all attending. They will be building a global development village and commemorating the 70th anniversary of Hiroshima.

The girls have to raise several thousand pounds between them to be able to attend these exciting Scouting events. They are holding an Easter Fair at Hadleigh High School as a joint fundraising event. Please do come and support this event. It is perfect timing to select a Mothers Day gift for Sunday 30th March and plenty of time for Easter ideas and gifts.

Or, just a great opportunity to look round some great individual craft stalls and enjoy a coffee and homemade cake with friends.

The Fair is to be held on Wednesday 26th March from 6.30 – 8.30 pm.

Mung Bean opening soon!

We expect that many people in Hadleigh and around were, like us, shocked when they heard that THE SUNFLOWER was going to close at the end of December. The Sunflower, Hadleigh’s local whole food shop, was a valuable community resource for the people of Hadleigh. It supplied products that enabled people to follow specialist dietary needs for their health and wellbeing, as well as supplying toiletry and cleaning products that were organic, animal cruelty free and environmentally sustainable.

So, because of our and others frustration at no longer being able to buy some favourite food items and widespread encouragement, we decided to take the plunge and open our new whole food/health food shop which will be called ‘MUNG BEAN’. This was a spontaneous decision and since our best decisions in life have always been made this way, we are confident that the business will be successful. Visiting other similar shops, this model of health/whole food shops is vibrant, as is our High Street since the rejection of the Tesco store.

Our MUNG BEAN shop will be located in the central shopping area of Hadleigh, at 2 Maiden Way. This was the old Hospice shop, in the walkway, which goes from the High Street to Magdalen Way, between Rachel boutique and The Kitchen and Bedroom Studio shop.

MUNG BEAN is a new business, with completely new stock. We will, of course, supply your old favourite lines and some familiar faces will be serving you. The opening date will be announced. Please keep an eye on the shop window.

Come, join us, all locals of Hadleigh and beyond are welcome to come along to our fund raising dog walk. So dust off your dog’s woolly winter coat, dig out the ball and head down to Hadleigh on 23rd March at 10.30am.

We are meeting at Hadleigh council offices on the grass opposite the main doors. £5 per dog and all dogs will get a FREE doggy treat bag for taking part, donated by Hadleigh Pet Supplies. All funds received from this event will go directly to French’s Care Haven a sanctuary for our 4 legged rescues.

With the continual heavy rain our fields have been completely water logged and muddy, it is hard to imagine how they will recover! Due to the conditions, by 1 pm the horses are cueing up to come back into their dry stables and huge barrels of hay, their not silly! Hopefully by the time you read this, the rain would have gone and sunny spring days are on the way. Here at French’s we are preparing at the yard for two more rescues that are coming to us, next months edition should have an update and a photo of our new arrivals.

This month’s photo is of Jann and a group of teenagers with learning difficulties that come to help on the farm at French’s. The ‘springboard to work’ project is starting to take shape and the tidy up in the orchard is gathering pace. Work will start this spring on the vegetable plot, we can’t wait to get that part of the project going.

As from this month, we are starting our recycle bin. Please dig out any old mobile phones, ink cartridges, items of clothing/material DVD’s, CD’s, unwanted furniture, garden bits and pieces and horse equipment/rugs for us. I am sure you folks have un-wanted items laying around your house or shed that are cluttering up the place. To us this is a much needed donation, which we would be grateful to receive.

COMPETITION Win a bottle of wine and your name in lights (well in our news letters) for whoever comes up with the best name, for our future fund raising recycle bin. St. Margaret’s Church, Whatfield Our Burns Night Celebrations and meal attracted 65 guests, to a decorated and music filled village hall. So many people contributed to the success of the

evening, when ÂŁ701.00 was raised for the church funds.

The next social event will be a Silent Auction and Cheese and Wine on

Saturday 29th March. Our thanks goes out to who regularly arrange all those

flowers and keep the church clean. Concerns have been expressed about the condition of the path leading to the main porch, plans are now in hand.

Spring into the Boule-in!

With our long winter days finally receding and flowers emerging along our roadside it’s good to know spring really is on its way. Traditionally the time to refresh the house and clear up the garden in anticipation of sunny days ahead – and after all the hard work an outing to give you new ideas for your home and inspiration for your garden. Lavenham Spring Craft Fair The 'Spring craft fair' at Lavenham village hall is just around the corner and now fully booked, is shaping up to be a great follow-on fair to the 'Christmas craft fair' which ran back in November 2013. The 'Christmas craft fair' was hugely successful and had a fantastic visitor attendance.

Event organiser Kylie Sparkes says 'we are all really looking forward to visiting Lavenham again with this event, we had such positive, enthusiastic feedback from the visitors at the the last event and have another great fair full of exciting new talented local crafters to inspire you for the Spring season.'

The 'Spring craft fair' is on the 16th March 2014 in the Village hall at Lavenham, it will be open from 10am – 4 pm and amoungst the craft stalls you will find glass and ceramics, textiles and weaving, homebaking and preserves, silk flowers and fresh flower arrangements, handmade soaps and candles, art and photography, handmade jewellery, handmade cards and much, much more. Once you have had a good browse round the stalls come and enjoy a cup of tea and choose from our selection of cakes, savouries and light luches. 'I hope to see lots of visitors enjoying this fantastic selection of very talented local makers, which offer very high quality, individual items which you would struggle to find on the highstreet,' say's Kylie.

Babergh District Council’s Planning Committee have rejected an application to approve 26 hectares of agricultural land near Newton for use as a solar energy farm. The application, which would have seen a large area of land at Rogers Farm in Newton given over to the generation of electricity by solar power, was put forward by solar farm development company Sun and Soil Ltd last September. It was this morning rejected by Babergh’s Planning Committee by 9 votes to 5 due to concerns over the landscape impact, effect on nearby listed buildings such as the nearby Church of St Mary the Virgin and the temporary loss of agricultural land for the 25 years of the solar farm’s operational life.

Peter Beer, Chairman of Babergh’s Planning Committee and District Councillor for Great Cornard (South), said: “The Committee took some time this morning to fully consider all the evidence, both from Sun and Soil ltd and from the organisations and communities opposed to the change of use. Ultimately, despite changes to the proposals in December, the Committee felt that the application did not give sufficient weight to mitigating the landscape and heritage impact of the proposals, nor to the consequences of removing such high quality arable land from agricultural use.

“While Babergh remains committed to greater renewable energy generation, all developments must be appropriate to their sites. In this case the applicant simply failed to convince the Committee that this was the case.”

From Ethiopia to London Running for VSO!

Richard Gomersall and his wife Davina have recently returned to Bildeston after spending 16 months in Ethiopia as VSO volunteers, sharing skills and knowledge in a Teacher Training College and Primary School for the Blind.

VSO is an international development charity that works in the world’s least developed countries across Africa, Asia and the Pacific, with the aim of alleviating poverty and improving livelihoods. VSO volunteers work with local organisations that serve poor people. They help give children a future through education, they improve the standards of care in hospitals, and they train poor people in the skills they need to earn a living. VSO volunteers are experienced professionals from various backgrounds such teachers, doctors nurse, and business - volunteers do whatever needs to be done to break down the barriers that trap people in poverty.

Whilst in Ethiopia Richard developed and helped install IT networks and systems, and Davina established an English language improvement centre, working especially with blind children. With the support of friends and family they also built new toilets for children at the blind school, and supported eye surgeries for some of the children. VSO do fantastic work around the world, and Richard has now embarked on a challenge to raise funds to support VSO, by running this year’s London marathon – although she might not be running Davina is supporting the fundraising effort in many other ways! As part of their fundraising effort Richard and Davina are planning two big, fun filled, events and it would be great to get as much support as possible!

The first event is a charity Ceilidh on Saturday 15th March in Hitcham village hall, there will be a sausage and mash supper for everyone, and dancing to Skylarking Ceilidh band (with caller). This should be a great night so please come and bring your friends! Tickets are £10 for adults and £5 for children (516 years), under 5’s free.

The second event is a clairvoyant night with local clairvoyant Fiona Nicholls on Friday 28th March in Stowmarket Community Centre. There will be tea, coffee and cakes available, and a grand raffle. Fiona is well known around the area, so please book in advance! Tickets are £8 in advance or £10 on the night.

Howard about to play a very grand piano Hello my readers: this month the picture shows me about to take to the stage to play a few numbers on the piano. But where could I be? If ever I have anyone round for dinner or afternoon tea, we usually end up with some fun on the piano. A number of my friends play and so it is all quite entertaining. Several weeks ago I was expecting six for an evening jolly.

I had spent my Saturday making a chicken and leek pie, preparing starters, making up the fire and all the things that one has to do. I was horrified when late in the afternoon my AGA started to lose temperature. I ended up having to take everything that I had prepared to one of my guests who kindly hosted the party for me. I am glad to say that all is now well again.

I was pleased to join the members of Hadleigh Probus for their February meeting. We had a very pleasant lunch indeed at The George (Tel. 01473 822151) and ended with one of my favourites which is Bread and Butter Pudding and custard. I was replete as I outlined to the members the joys of making a Will or indeed using my firm if you are moving house. I was delighted to find that so many in the audience were your fellow readers.

You will remember that I mentioned just after Christmas that Frank and Maria had had a near squeak in the High Street when shots rained down on them. Maria has been unconscious for some weeks and Frank is so glad that she had put in place a Lasting Power of Attorney. This has made life so much easier for Frank as he is now able to manage and run Maria’s affairs without too much difficulty. Frank had to lodge a certified copy of his Lasting Power of Attorney with the bank and he realises that life would have been so much more complicated without a Lasting Power of Attorney.

Frank suggests that all of you dear readers should follow Maria’s example and come to see me to make a Lasting Power of Attorney.

If you have owned your property since before the mid 1990s, it is likely that you will have an unregistered title. The title to your property would consist of a pile of Conveyances. If you should lose your title then you could be in some difficulty. As people get older they do forget where they have put things. You could ask us to attend to a voluntary registration of your title at the Land Registry. Once the title is registered it is committed to the Land Registry’s computers and is as good as the last time it was downloaded.

Armchair Players’ Tribute to Love At their monthly meeting in February, the Armchair Players paid tribute to love and romance with diverse readings ranging from the romantic to the hilarious.

The members chose to define love and relationships with pieces written by well-known authors such as Shakespeare, Robert Frost, E. E. Cummings and Sue Townsend as well as from those better known for other pursuits such as John Constable and Lady Mary Wilson, wife of the former Prime Minister, Harold Wilson. There were also readings from Corinthians and original skits written by one of our own members, Diane Armour.

Our next meeting will be on March 10th at The George pub at 7:30pm. We will be reading An Inspector Calls written by J. B. Priestley and first performed in England in 1946. The play has become a theatre classic and adaptations have included films and two television mini-series. Stop Living In Fear – Free Yourself From Anxiety Anxiety is something we all face from time to time, but how we respond to that anxiety, and what happens next, can have a dramatic effect on the quality of our lives. Anxiety takes many forms; sometimes it’s a reaction to a past event or in anticipation of some real or imagined future event; sometimes anxiety becomes a full blown phobia of spiders, flying, driving or something you would rather not tell other people about. Whatever the triggers, and whatever the symptoms, excessive anxiety always operates through the same psychological mechanisms, this means that they can all be successfully treated with the right combination of specially developed techniques.

When Good Anxiety Goes Bad Anxiety is an integral part of an entirely natural and very useful threat response called the Orientation Response (Fight Or Flight), which is fired by the amygdala - a small area of the brain dedicated to spotting threats in our environment.

The Orientation Response is supposed to be fired in any situation that may pose a threat to your wellbeing. When fired, it heightens your senses and allows you to make a quick decision to investigate further, defend yourself or escape. It also give you a shot of adrenaline, which speeds up your physiology to do enable you to take the latter options more effectively. Inappropriate anxiety, whether it’s a specific phobia or of the more general kind, is the result of a misfiring Orientation Response, and the reason it is often so hard to control is because the amygdala fires so quickly - long before there is time for conscious logical thought.

Good News For Anxiety Sufferers Through the use of hypnosis, the amygdala can be re-trained to understand that the previously perceived threat is not really a threat, and that there is no need for alarm. If you find yourself getting excessively anxious, far too frequently, or in situations where you know this is an over reaction, I have some good news for you - this is not something you have to put up with.

It has been shown and is fairly well known that the way to well being and happiness can be boiled down to five elements. Essentially these are: connection, being active, being present/ noticing, lifelong learning and giving to others/ making a difference. You could also say this is the holistic approach to well being of taking care of the mind, body and spirit.

As one of our members is keen to say, she found all of these by joining our volunteer days at Orchard Barn: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have to write to let you know how much I am enjoying my Wednesdays at Orchard Barn. Having recently finished working full time I have been wondering what to do with myself and have actually been feeling quite low. However, working at the Barn gives me so much pleasure that I could never have imagined, it really does tick all the boxes: Connection â&#x20AC;&#x201C; working as a team with others, connecting with other like-minded people, connecting with the earth Being active â&#x20AC;&#x201C; doing physical work outside in the fresh air â&#x20AC;&#x201C; no need to pay for expensive gym membership, this is the perfect workout Being present â&#x20AC;&#x201C; noticing changes in seasons, seeing the first snowdrops, listening to the birds, being aware of the ecology of the site. Learning â&#x20AC;&#x201C; learning new skills, eg building a deadwood screen, making and using compost, using permaculture principles, rainwater harvesting, naming different tree species, making traditional cob walls and floors. Making a difference â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at the end of the day the difference is visible â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we have created something beautiful, tidied or cleared an area, helped the ecosystem, through giving our time I would also add: Co-creation â&#x20AC;&#x201C; using materials that might be labelled as waste to make something useful, eg using waste wood to make screens and benches, using hoggin and clay to make cob. f you would like to improve your well being and give your happiness a boost I urge you to give it a go.â&#x20AC;? There are gardening volunteer days on Tuesdays (see photo) and site maintenance on Wednesdays; no previous skills are required but are always useful. Italia – la terra del buon cibo, del vino e romanticismo!

Italy has an extraordinarily diverse culture with many other Mediterranean influences. Over the last few years, more and more people are travelling to Italy – some for the first time, many for a second and lots who have been several times and who still consider that there are many more places yet to see. As a result, the popularity of two or three centre holidays has grown significantly as the ability to combine a city with a countryside location, or a lakeside and a seaside, or indeed multi-cities has become so easy to do by making the best use of the local rail network. And there are some areas of Italy which remain unexplored.

Romagna is a slice of Northern Italy that has much in common with its famous neighbour on the other side of the Apennines, Tuscany. It has the same rolling countryside, but with beaches facing the Adriatic rather than the Mediterranean. It has historic cities, traditional villages and relaxing thermal spas – what is does not have are the crowds!

The cuisine and wine of the region are remarkable. Hence the reason why, for the first time, Travel Stop has decided to arrange an escorted group departure to the “Al Vecchio Convento” Hotel and Restaurant – the first Albergo Diffuso in the Region of Emilia Romagna. What we are offering is an Italian experience, with its typical daily life and having the opportunity to interact with the family of the hotel and with the local people, instead of just a holiday.

We have decided to include cooking lessons, truffle hunting with the dogs, wine tasting, a visit to Agriturismo to see cheese production and tasting, a chocolate tour in Modigliana, panoramic walks in the vineyards and olive tree hills to learn about the local products and how they are made, an excursion to the beautiful Ravenna, and numerous opportunities to taste some of the local produce, such as wines and olive-oils, cheese and sausages, balsamic vinegar and much more, with the possibility of buying directly from the producer. For those of you who are not really interested in cooking yourself, but like the idea of this Italian experience, participation is not compulsory! A Grand Day Out

Our walk this month will be on Saturday 8th March. We will walk from Sproughton to East Bergholt via Washbrook, Copdock, Belstead, Bentley and Capel St Mary. We will leave Hadleigh by bus at 8.30am, from Hadleigh Bus Station (Co-op side), and return to Hadleigh by bus from East Bergholt arriving back at Hadleigh Bus Station at 2.18 pm. This walk is 8.5 miles and is suitable for all walkers, older children and dogs. Most of the walk is on Bridleways, and Tracks, with only a few cross field paths so it will be fairly easy going. Some of the tracks especially through Bentley and East End Woods will be wet in places so strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn. Sheila and all the family thank all those who sent so many cards, messages and calls on the sad loss of George. The large number of people who were able to attend the funeral was a great tribute to a wonderful man. Throughout Hadleigh and beyond there is the enduring legacy of his great skill in the home and wider construction industry, especially his craftsmanship with wood (one small example being the hymn boards in St Mary’s Church).

Thanks must go to Hadleigh Health Centre, Martin Thrower who conducted the funeral assisted by David Stranack and Ipswich Hospital (in particular A&E, EAU, Washbrook and Kirton wards) for their wonderful care.

A dear husband, father, stepfather, grandfather and great grandfather, to whom family was very important, will live on in our hearts and memories for always.

Diamond-Lites Majorettes

The girls are training hard ready for the upcoming season and hoping that it will be as good as last years. As you can see from the picture the girls had an amazing year achieving their best results since the troupe started in 2007. In total the girls brought home 37 first place trophies, 21 second place, 17 third place, 6 fourth place, numerous individual trophies, medals and sashes and their proudest achievement was winning overall troupe of the day at three competitions.

The troupe would not be able to run without the hard work and dedication of the majorettes and their parents who give up so much of their spare time to fundraise for the troupe. We have had a few fundraisers lately and we would like to say a massive thank you for everyone’s support. We are very lucky to be part of such a supportive community. Thank you to Morrisons in Hadleigh and all its customers who gave so generously while we were bag packing in February. Thank you to Jo at Jo’s Kitchen in the Eight Bells for hosting the fundraising event in January and to all the hard work from Jo organising the raffle and for putting on such a fantastic spread for us. Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 10 features several house in High Street. The front cover shows George Manning’s forge its site is now the front garden of No 81-83) and on the back cover, No.4 and No.66 are used as examples of wattle and daub infill in timber-framed buildings. The series ’17th century people’ looks at the monumental brass dated 1599 on the north wall of the parish church, which depicts Alice Wade.

Unfortunately, the figure of her husband was stolen many years ago and she now turns towards an empty space where William once stood, high constable of Cosford, clothier in the woollen-cloth industry with business connections in London and probably the richest man in Bildeston at that time. Their home in High Street has been identified, one of the larger properties in the village, which has since been sub-divided but still exhibits its medieval origin. Catching up with past stories, ‘BHQ follow-up’ includes a different picture of the fire feature in Issue 1, when Percey Finter, photographer and hairdresser, was on the scene while Bildeston Fire Brigade was still damping down. The house was so badly damaged that what remained had to be demolished. The site was left empty for many years, eventually to become No 176 High Street, which was the Rectory for twenty years from 1979. Continuing the High Street theme, comparison is made between pictures dated 1906 and early 1970s that look north from outside The King’s Head.

Do you remember when Barclays Bank was open on Fridays mornings for a couple of hours? New contributors are welcomed to the magazine with stories of family and schooldays. The great-grandparents of Nigel Crisp of Hadleigh feature in ‘The Raynhams of Bildeston, 1877-1943’, which is illustrated with wonderful photographs showing Bildeston village scenes including High Street, and the writer’s grandparents on their wedding day in 1911, when the whole family turned out in their best clothes. Alan and Sue Wignall, also of Hadleigh, recall their times at Bildeston Primary School during the 1950s, when sunny days meant boys went fishing for sticklebacks down Mill Lane with their teacher and the girls were taught maypole dancing in the playground.

All the shop premises that Alan mentions are now closed, which is such a loss to what is now becoming a growing community. However, the children’s delight in the 1950s was Mrs Fayers’ sweet shop at No.88 High Street, where the shelves were lined with big glass jars tempting youngsters to part with their pocket-money. Sue remembers Danford Park on the road to Chelsworth as the venue for Bildeston Sports, which was a great attraction to athletes and cyclists throughout the county.

Hadleigh and District RNLI At the recent AGM of the Hadleigh and District RNLI Fundraising Committee, held at Kersey Bell, notice was given of the closure of the Branch. Despite raising an average of over £5,000 a year it has not been possible to continue the Committee without further co-opting of assistance to undertake the hard work involved in fund-raising events such as the popular wine tastings and shanty suppers held in previous years, as well as the street collections.

As no further assistance has been volunteered, the Committee has now been disbanded. Should anyone wish to donate to the RNLI at any time, do please either contact any of the Lifeboat Stations such as at Harwich, or send cheques to RNLI, West Quay Road, Poole, BH15 1HZ. February ‘fill dike’ has certainly lived up to its ancient name this year!

Compared with other parts of the United Kingdom, at the time of writing, we have remained relatively flood free in Suffolk. However, the council’s highways officers have been busy dealing with numerous local problems involving blocked drains and overflow from streams and small rivers.

This aside, the County Council, in common with local authorities from other more or less unaffected areas, has been able to offer help to other counties; water rescue teams and firemen from Suffolk have been sent to assist with emergency conditions in the Thames Valley and also on the Somerset levels.

I am assured that this didn’t compromise safety here in Suffolk.

In difficult times it is good to show mutual support. This applies at the community as well as the official level. According to Sue Herne, the Emergency Planning Office at Mid Suffolk and Babergh District Councils, recent ‘extreme weather events’, including the St Jude’s Storm and the coastal surge in December, have led to an exponential rise in interest from parishes looking to develop their own Community Emergency Plan. The process is generally led by the Parish Council.

In Cosford, Monks Eleigh and Cockfield already have fully developed Plans in place, and a number of others are working on them. Not all villages have signed up however. Watching the work in progress from a distance I have been struck by how, in addition to being a good thing in itself, the creation of a Plan brings a community together. People with all sorts of skills, whether they are professionals such as nurses, or are just good tea makers who can offer ‘psychological first aid’, can volunteer to get involved and get to know one another better in the process.

Don’t Leave Your Neighbours In The Cold Last year 24,000 people died because of cold homes – deaths that could possibly have been avoided had they had some support. It is suggested that this year, we could be facing the severest winter for decades.

Hopefully, you will know who your vulnerable residents are. If you don’t, please make an effort to find out and consider following our ten-point plan: 1. Find out who your elderly/vulnerable residents are.

2. Drop round to see them or pop a leaflet through their door with your name and telephone number on, and tell them to call you if they get into trouble.

3. Ascertain if they have relatives who keep in touch, and the frequency.

4. Consider giving the relatives your contact details, in case they can’t get in touch and are concerned about the person’s welfare.

5. Suggest that they have a nominated key-holder (preferably not you).

6. Inform their immediate neighbours – In some communities even next-door neighbours don’t know each other.

9. If their house is very cold, try to persuade them to put the heating on, even if just for an hour a day. Do not take it upon yourself to turn it on, as you will incur costs for them that they might not be able to afford. The government website www.gov.uk/energy-grants-calculator assists an individual to find out if there is any help available for energy grants and heating costs in the home, dependant on circumstances.

10. Elderly people who don’t use their heating will usually say it’s because they can’t afford to. Tell them that Energy companies provide a huge amount of help and support for the elderly. They do this through schemes that offer free cavity wall and loft insulation, by giving access to trust funds and a priority register for people with disabilities. The Home Heat Helpline (0800 33 66 99) gives advice to those struggling to pay their fuel bill and keep warm. The helpline gives access to Britain's biggest free insulation programme.

It's that time of year again. We are all struggling with maintaining to keep our New Years Resolutions of being Thinner, or healthier or fitter!

So why not do yourself a favour, and help the charity Help For Heroes at the same time by taking part in the 2nd annual bike ride on Sunday 6 April organised by Hadleighs very own BWB Cycling Group. We are known as Birds Wot Bike, but as we now have several regular men join us (honorary Birds) we welcome all to join us in what we hope will be an even bigger and better event than last year.

In 2013 we raised a little over £2600 for this very worthwhile cause. Achieved by almost 100 cyclists taking part in our 50k ride. We even had 2 tandems take part, and participants from several local cycle clubs. This year we will have the same 50k route, and for those wishing to challenge the legs a little more a 70k option. As previously, the event will begin and end at The George in Hadleigh - where hosts Tori and Paul will be planning food and hopefully entertainment for us all to enjoy.

Nursery School in Sambuyang, South Kombo Region, Gunjur, The Gambia CAN YOU HELP? We have just returned from a visit to the Gambia where we own a small house in a rural area. One day we were approached by the headmaster of a local nursery school. He had started up two months previously, and on making an unannounced visit, we found it operating in the headmaster’s house, a simple domestic compound with bare walls and a mud floor. A teacher was reading from a tattered story book, the only one they had; there were no pencils and paper, no art materials, and nowhere for the children to sit. In spite of this, there are 34 children (aged 4-7) eager to attend, and two enthusiastic teachers and one assistant who are working without pay.

The Gambia makes no provision for education before age 7, and although after that it is ‘free’, it is still too expensive for many to afford (books, uniforms etc are provided by the parents).

We decided to help. We organised paint and a local ‘artist’ to decorate the walls, and benches and desks from a local carpenter. The pictures tell the story, and the gratitude was touching. To our great embarrassment, the school was named after us.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? The school will be financed through sponsorship. Each child will have a sponsor who will undertake to pay £50 a year for the duration of the child’s nursery school attendance - maximum 3 years, £150 in all. With 100% take up, this should generate enough income to pay the teachers, and provide the children with books, pens, and paper, and a daily meal. It might also stretch to improving the infrastructure, e.g. constructing an outside toilet, and making the open well more safe. Sponsorship money will be paid to us; we will ensure that it reaches the school and is used in appropriate ways.

Priorities for spending will be agreed with us and full accounts provided at the end of each year. The first priority is to pay the teachers - Salaries in the range of 1500 to 2500 dalasi a month, which depending on exchange rate is approx £30 - £50.

Hadleigh is one of the oldest oneday Agricultural Shows in the Country; this year it is celebrating its 175th show. Organised annually by the Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association, this annual fund raising event has all the features you might expect from a traditional celebration of the best of rural Suffolk but also a great deal more.....

Show Director Paul Gillies has Introducing our very own “tractor chosen this year’s focus which is boy” Angus, who will be the face of “How we farm today”. There will be the Hadleigh Show 2014 lots of modern farm machinery on show, both on display and showing what they can do in the rings. The 175 year old heritage will be represented by vintage tractors, the “Flying Fergies” and our very own Suffolk Horses. And to show that farming in the region is still very much about families, Paul’s son Angus is the star of our advertising campaign proving that it is never too young to start.

Angus and friends will also enjoy the Land Train, introduced last year, which will once again take children around the showground and stamp their “passports” at various stands to claim their prize. Also returning is “The Sheep Show”, a humorous yet educational live stage show about sheep and wool with some surprisingly talented dancing sheep! The separately run, but always popular, Bert Stocks Fun Fair will also thrill adults and children alike.

Ringside entertainment features the Welsh Axemen, the Young Farmers TugO-War, Cyril the Squirrel and the racing terriers and the “Dog and Duck” show – with the dog rounding up ducks instead of sheep. Sounds quackers!

There are more than 150 classes of cattle, sheep, goats and horses on show; over 120 trade stands exhibiting; the Art Exhibition and Sale; Rural Crafts and the popular Flower Tent; “Have a go” areas including the Education Tent, featuring art from local schools and where you can mill wheat, make bread dough and test your skills in identifying seeds and vegetables. The Food Hall will as usual showcase the very best of our local food and drink producers, tempting you to sample and buy.

News from Whatfield School No we are not hibernating through the long wet winter of 2014, but Whatfield schoolchildren were dressed in onesies to support Children in Need, and we were proud to receive a thank you certificate from them this month.

We have all enjoyed our trips to Bradfield Woods, working on ‘Forest School activities this term. We built dens, and bridges, as well as participating in a variety of outdoors art and environmental activities in all weathers.

As you can see, Maths is an important and useful subject, which all the children enjoy. We try to make it as practical as possible whenever we can.

A new initiative for us was our ‘Aspiration Afternoons’, where parents came in to explain to the children the type of work they do, and why it is important to work hard to achieve the best results at school. We had very interesting talks on a range of jobs, including banking, social work and the agricultural industry, all of which were much enjoyed by the pupils.

Kersey Mill Newsletter As spring approaches the garden around the mill are having a make-over with new planting and lots of composted mulch on the beds for good measure.

The snowdrops look absolutely wonderful covering the riverbanks and give us hope that spring is only just round the corner.

On the restoration front the work continues on restoring the mill to its former glory that was built in 1810. Much of the work on the wheel has been delayed due to the heavy downpours and high water level through the river. We are currently experiencing difficulties to our efforts due to the backwatering of the river and tail race to the wheel. This occurs and impedes the wheel because the water is struggling to get away due in part to the flow between Kersey Mill and Toppesfield Bridge in Hadleigh having a large amount of fallen trees which have been effectively damming the river and impeding its flow.

We would welcome any landowners along the river bank who have fallen trees in their portion of the river to help by removing these obstructions.

This will also help others that live near to the river and potentially reduce the risk of flooding. There is currently an abundance of blockages along this stretch. Photographs show a section of river to the rear of Ann Beaumont Way. Despite the horrendous weather works have not ceased. Repairs to the joinery are currently on-going.

With the wheel now free and turning manually, the under shot chute repaired and down in the race ready to be fixed in position it is hoped that this year will see the wheel turning once the new buckets are fabricated and installed. It is thanks to the volunteers who helped with Santa’s Workshop and those that supported the event, which proved popular enough to raise monies to pay for over 50% of the cost of the buckets that are currently being made from Corten steel. With the happy band of volunteers the project continues to gain momentum to the ultimate goal of opening the mill up for education visits and regular open days. Cut in Solar Feed-in Tariff now confirmed It has now been confirmed that the UK Government’s Feed-in Tariff for Solar PV systems will be reduced with effect from the 1st April 2014. The tariff is being reduced by just over 0.5p, meaning that the Solar industry as a whole will now get incredibly busy for the next few weeks, as people look to maximise their potential returns and get their systems installed and registered before the cut-off date of March 31st.

HOW DOES THE SOLAR FEED-IN TARIFF WORK? ● If you install an electricity-generating technology such as Solar PV, the UK Government's Feed-in Tariff scheme (FITs) could mean that you get money from your energy supplier. ● You can be paid for the electricity you generate, even if you use it yourself, and for any surplus electricity you export to the grid. ● And of course you'll also save money on your electricity bill, because you'll be using your own electricity.

It is widely predicted that the wholesale price of electricity will double in the next decade, so inevitably there will come a time when it is cheaper to invest in equipment for your home that generates a good proportion of your energy, than it will be to pay your energy provider for all the power you need. We are now seeing this situation arise in countries like Spain, where there is no Feed-in Tariff, but still the demand for energy-producing systems such as Solar PV has drastically increased.

The Feed-in Tariff gets reduced periodically, depending on how many Solar systems have been installed in the UK. It is purely an incentive to attract people to ‘go green’ and help the Government reach their targets for reducing the UK’s Carbon emissions, it therefore won’t be around for ever, and will

continue to reduce over time. So whilst the facility is there to have your system pay for itself over time, and to then go on to make you a very good return that far outperforms those being offered by most financial products, why not make full use of it?

ABOUT FEED-IN TARIFFS Feed-In Tariffs were introduced on the 1st April 2010 and replaced UK government grants as the main financial incentive to encourage uptake of renewable electricity-generating technologies. The UK Government's Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) makes the key decisions on FITs in terms of government policy. The energy regulator Ofgem administers the scheme. Your energy supplier will make the FITs payments to you. The large energy suppliers are required by law to provide them; smaller suppliers are not, but many have opted to offer them anyway.

For you to qualify for the Feed-in Tariff, the installer and the products you use must both be certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).

The tariffs you receive depend on both the eligibility date and, for solar PV, your property’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating.

If you are eligible to receive the Feed-in Tariff you will benefit in three ways: ● Generation tariff: your energy supplier will pay you a set rate for each unit (or kWh) of electricity you generate. Once your system has been registered, the tariff levels are guaranteed for the period of the tariff (up to 20 years) and are index-linked, so the amount of money you will receive each year from the Feed-in Tariff actually increases. ● Export tariff: you will get a further 4.64p/kWh from your energy supplier for each unit you export back to the electricity grid, so you can sell any electricity you generate but don't use yourself. This rate is the same for all technologies.

At some stage smart meters will be installed to measure what you export, but until then it is estimated as being 50% of the electricity you generate. ● Energy bill savings: you will be making savings on your electricity bills because generating electricity to power your home and appliances means you don’t have to buy as much electricity from your energy supplier. The amount you save will vary depending how much of the electricity you use on site.

Time is already starting to run out before the Feed-in Tariff cut off on the 31st March, available installation dates are already becoming limited, and we would hate you to miss out if you are interested in maximising the potential returns on a system.

May I introduce myself.....

My dad was Polish...a master carpenter...old school, no power tools just mallet and chisel and a lot of natural talent.

I left college with a diploma in electro/mechanical engineering, no way was I going to butcher wood!! But blood (or sawdust) is thicker than water and he apprenticed me into the trade.

Forty years later here I am, wood has been my passion and has put bread on the table.

Towards the end of last year I was approached by certain members of the Parochial Church Council to submit ideas/designs and an estimate to refashion and refurbish twenty of the present church pews into ones that will carry through the history of the church into the next century. Having carried out work for the church before I was mindful of certain constraints and the need to follow tradition and that the work carried out would be open to critical approval. It was an honour and pleasure to be accepted for this task which is now in the early stages of enactment.

Sixteen of the original church pews have been stored off site for approx. eighteen months and these are the ones I am working on at the moment.

They are eighteen feet long and in reasonable condition - I am cutting them down to a length of 9' 6" - the excess material (minus the woodworm!) being reserved for further church projects. The dismantling and restoration is being carried out in my workshop but it was decided that the actual re-construction should be carried out in a temporary workshop set out in the church itself. Next to the work area I have set up a display board showing a photographic history of the actual woodwork involved together with descriptions and a little humour!

We would like Hadleigh at large to know and understand what we are doing to and in our church!!....

I am there most mornings from about 9 am till 2 pm and will be until at least the end of March - available to answer questions either on the task at hand, carpentry in general (try and stop me!) to chat in general or to put minds at rest if need be. We are all mindful of the fact that this project does not sit easy in some quarters and understand the respect needed where this hub of the community is concerned.

And now........a little history.......!!

At a meeting of the Parochial Church Council on19th April 1870 amongst other business it was put forward that permission be obtained and the 'Sanction of the Parishioners' be requested that ' the present enclosed pews be replaced by open benches....''. This seems to be the first mention of the life of the present population of pews that we see in our church to-day!!

Entry by the Rev. R T Wheeler in the Vestry Minute Book on September 14th 1870 ''...after much effort to complete the restoration of this venerable edifice......it is now proposed to remove the old high pews and replace them by open sittings which will....PROVIDE MORE AND BETTER SITTINGS FOR THE POOR!!....'' I assume he means the likes of you and me!!

25th November 1870 - Meeting of the Committee for the Restoration of the Interior of St Mary's Church......''Seats!!......A report from the architect J.D.Whyatt was read stating that; ...The existing high pews must be entirely swept away. The few fragments of former seating are so unimportant and imperfect, that while it would be well to preserve them as 'relics' I conceive no actual use need be made of them. I suggest similar which I made drawings of for St. James Church, Bury St. Edmunds, and since also used at Lavenham. Adult and CHILDREN seating to be separate!.......'' Now that's what I call fire and brimstone and while we're at it send the little brats up the chimney!!

Interesting little point here - The pews at St. James Church Bury St Eds. I have seen - they are similar but no cigar!! - also there is an excellent book called ‘Pews, Benches and Chairs’ edited by Trevor Cooper and Sarah Brown, 500 pages packed full of info, drawings and photos again some similar pews to ours but none exactly the same - methinks we have

some unique examples in our little church - unless of course you know different!!

To continue the history lesson...

Soon after a 'Bond' was issued by the Very Revd. Wheeler and Joseph Abbot Pettit and others for performance of a contract for work in the interior of the church. The architect appointed was a Mr John Drayton Whyatt of Gloucester House , Liverpool Road, Holloway, London, obviously country architects were only fit for the odd 'barn' or cow shed! Part of the ‘stipulation’ was for the accommodation of 1160 worshippers to include 314 children - yes we can only envy the church attendance figures of those days! - and seats to be of “seasoned English Oak” - hmmmmm from what I am finding - “seasoned” obviously meant something quite different 150 years ago!

Time moved on and on the 9th December 1871 (Extract from the Ipswich Journal) ''On the successful completion of the restoration of the fine old church of Hadleigh, the bells rang out a joyous peel last Thursday from the old tower, and they have been rung for no better cause since they were first placed there three centuries ago”. The greater part of the nave was occupied with pews of the ugliest pattern. So deep, that those seated in them could no more than see each other's heads and so badly constructed that they looked like cattle pens in a market place and gave a crazy ramshackle look to the interior”. “The new benches are all of Oak of a very elegant make. The backs are sloping and the end framing is crossed so as to obtain this form. The ends next to the passages are elaborately and beautifully carved; some representing ears of corn, others fruit or flowers and hardly two are alike. To those who knew the church in its former condition the effect of these benches is as remarkable as it is agreeable”.

The woodwork carving was executed by Mr John Spurgeon of Stowmarket it would have been an honour and a privilege to have met the man and shaken his hand! I am indebted to Roger Kennell for the factual historical information - the funny bits are my doing!

Our pupil reporters have covered key events over the last month and we hope your enjoy reading their work.

‘Try’ing hard The U13s team have had huge success on the Rugby pitch when they recently beat a South London team from a much larger school. This means they only have to play three more teams before they reach the national competition at Wembley. A member of the rugby team, Oscar Farrow said: ‘It’s amazing, we’re playing at the Allianz Park Stadium and I’m very excited!’ At Hadleigh High, we are extremely proud of our team, as they are in the top 16 of the whole of the UK! We’ve always been successful at rugby but this year the Year 8 team have topped the lot! Harvey Sharpe, another member of the rugby team, said: ‘it’s good, the stadium is big and I’m really looking forward to it!’ Their coach Mr Cook is delighted at the progress the boys have made since they started in year 7. In other rugby news, both our U12s and U13s have recently qualified for the highly esteemed Suffolk Finals Day coming up, and our U14s have qualified the Suffolk Shield, good luck to them all!

Lights, Camera, Action!

Recently, Little Shop of Horrors, this year’s school production has been performed to audiences who were very impressed with the sophistication of the students, and thoroughly enjoyed the show. The day before the opening night, a Year 10 student, Harry Planck, said: ‘It’s good, I’m enjoying it because you get to show your comical side.

The atmosphere of the production was amazing and wonderful to watch.

Everyone was buzzing and it was inevitable to say that it was a fantastic experience had by all. As one of the youngest members of the cast, Thomas in 7G, said: ‘As a year 7, I had a great experience and hope to do it again next year.’ It’s great to see that pupils in the younger year groups are getting involved.

The Production is a brilliant way to get different year groups to mix together, and everybody always manages to have a good experience, with many people auditioning for the next year’s show. For the Year 11s, this is their last performance, and Faith Plummer in 11G said: ‘It’s really good fun and a great experience. Thank you to Mr Day and Mrs Reader for putting it together.’ The staff are always very supportive and try to make the performance as good as possible, and we can always tell that production is a wonderful experience to be involved in because retired staff often come back to help with music and the technical elements. The music is always one of the main parts of the production, and there is a very skilled team who are involved in putting it all together.

A Year 10 student, Tim Jenkins, played the drums and said: ‘Production was amazing! I really enjoyed playing the drums and was very honoured to be chosen as there are some very skilled musicians helping with the show. It was a wonderful experience and I would definitely help out again next year.’ Music teacher and guitarist in the performance Mr Hellewell said: ‘It was my first production with the school and I was really excited.

We take the music from the West End show and the students have the same scripts, so it is very similar but we put our own edge on it.’

The scenery this year is looking exceptionally good thanks to Art teachers Mrs Reed and Miss Manford, along with help from students of all year groups. A student involved in production, Livi Player, said: ‘I think it’s one of the best sets we’ve ever had.’

Miss Manford made the plant herself and she said: ‘It was difficult because some of the fabric was difficult to sew as it was very thick, however it was very fun to make. For the scenery we first sketched out a rough copy before adding the details to make it look as good as possible’. Well done to everybody who was involved the production, it was an enjoyable experience and we are already looking forward to next year!

Frantic Fundraisers Currently our Year 8 students have been supporting the Age UK charity using a range of ideas such as the 'coats and coppers' campaign. Age UK supports 34 Telephone Community News on 01473 823366

the lives of the elderly who are struggling to pay for heating and other monthly costs that are required. The Year 8s liked the idea of supporting this charity so recently they have held a cake sale to raise money. They sold a variety of different cakes which were enjoyed by everyone! This resulted in a very successful fundraising activity for the whole school to take part in and enjoy. The Year 8 students that were hugely involved with the fundraising were: Georgie Alger 8T, Anna Norman 8M, Antonia Marks 8T, Amy Morton 8T, Beth Hanson 8T, Kaylee Powell 8T, Will White 8M, Kerys Nash 8T and Nadia Johnson 8T. Mrs Thomas told us, "We sold cupcakes, mini bobble hats and felt caterpillars. It has been enjoyable for the Year 8s who were involved and will hopefully have a beneficial outcome!"

Altogether, they raised a whopping £86 from the charity event. Well done Year 8!

Dress to Impress Our hard working Prom Committee members have arranged both a date and venue for the prom. It has been decided that the event will be held on Friday 11th July 2014 at Wherstead Park. Lisa White, a member of the Prom Committee said, "This is one of the key events of my school year, and I consider it as a reward and feel privileged that I get the opportunity to help organise the whole event." All the Year 11s are extremely excited for the upcoming prom and are looking forward to attending it later this year.

Ally Horridge, another loyal member of the Prom Committee said, "It took an awful lot of work to organise the whole event. We had several meetings discussing the possibilities of what would be featured at the prom. We had to visit several possible venues before deciding on Wherstead Park." All of Year 11 are looking forward to the prom and are greatly appreciative of the hard work done by the Prom Committee. We hope this year’s prom will be equally as good as last years, if not better!

Bon Voyage On the 14th March, 107 of our lucky Year 7 pupils are having an amazing opportunity to visit Boulogne for a day. Mrs Sibley, a French teacher, has organised fun activities such as visiting a Sea Life Centre where they will able to get up close and personal to the animals. She has also planned for them to visit a French bakery where they will learn how to make croissants. Mrs Sibley said: 'It's been hard work but will be worth it in the end; all the Year 7s are looking forward to it and so am I.' It is an opportunity for French to be taken out of the classroom and for some Year 7s it could be their first trip abroad. Sam, Year 7, said: 'I'm excited! I've never been away with my friends before so it will be fantastic!’ Another pupil in Year 7, Jessica, said: 'I'm really looking forward to it, especially the croissant making.'

We hope our Year 7 pupils thoroughly enjoy the trip and put their French they have learnt earlier in the year to good use!

Are you worthy?

There are new prefects on the way from Year 10. There has also been a change in what type of prefect the Year 10 students can be. They have moved away from subject prefects to School Prefects, as well as Prefect Leaders and Head Boy and Girl. These roles are very sought after and pupils will have to show their best traits to get the role. Mrs Calvino stated: “we have moved away from subject areas because there is no variety for subjects. Being a School Prefect offers more variety giving the Year 10s more experience to become better leaders.” Good luck to all the Year 10s going for the prefect roles.

‘Fete’al Attraction Year 10 are also currently organising a fete which is to be held on the 10th of May. They are organising and running the entire event, which will involve them having to ring up businesses and negotiate for the best price. There will also be other opportunities for all the years to get involved. The money raised will go to each house charity. The houses each have an individual charity: East of Anglian Air Ambulance : EACH : Suffolk carers Home Start : Ormiston children & families trust Down Hill Wonder On Friday the 14th February Years 9 – 11 will be going to Austria. They will be travelling for two days over several countries. Chloe Read Year 10 stated: “It will be an exciting experience for all of us and I’m really looking forward to going snowboarding.” They will be coming back on Saturday the 22nd February by which time they will have had a fantastic experience. We hope they have a brilliant time and enjoy every second of it.

Drivers needed for Lifeline Car Scheme A community organisation needs more drivers for its community car scheme which supports local people without access to other forms of transport.

Hadleigh Community Transport Group needs volunteers to drive its community car, which can carry up to five passengers or a wheelchair user and three passengers. The service is available to help people living in the Hadleigh area – including the elderly, those with impaired mobility and the rurally isolated – to carry out important tasks such as attend medical centres, go shopping, pay bills, take part in social activities and to visit family friends.

Joy Moran, the group’s manager, said: “We want to remind people that the community car is available. The service is already well used but we have the capacity to help even more people to avoid isolation and to get out and about to carry out tasks and improve their social lives.

“We are sure there are many more people who could benefit from this service but do not realise it is available to them, so we are publishing it as widely as possible. However, to ensure we can meet future demand for the service we need to recruit more volunteer drivers. Anyone who can spare sometime would be making a big difference to the lives of many local people who may struggle to live life to the full without access to the community car. All volunteers would be given full training and would not incur any costs.”

The car scheme is available to people living in Hadleigh and the surrounding parishes including Bildeston, Lavenham, Boxford, Semer, Raydon, Polstead, Elmsett, Kersey and Monks Eleigh.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club The talk to the club on 10th February by Jim Marshall, was on carnations but not just any old carnations, it was a detailed history and the growing of Malmaison carnations. The plight of endangered mammals seems simple compared with that of the malmaison carnation.

Stop the killing of and destruction of the mammals habitat and that could be solved whereas this fussy carnation is apparently determined on self extinction! They first came to light and took their name from a district of Paris and soon there were twenty seven colours, now there are only seven remaining. How this came about is difficult to discover but the plant is very susceptible to virus, added to which it is fussy about its bed fellows. It won't mix with most other plants, even in a vase, so asparagus fern is the only greenery added to show vases or arrangements.

To say Jim Marshall is a dedicated expert in raising these challenging flowers is an understatement as his many gold medals testify. He explained how he buys in scientifically grown minute plants grown in gel from single cells then grows them into "mother" plants from which he takes cuttings for two years before destroying them and starting again as above. These mother plants are never allowed to flower but this method of using vegetatively produced plants is the only available way as the flowers produce neither pollen or seed.

It was a most interesting evening learning what amazing efforts people like Jim go to in order to save individual plants. These prima dona flowers would soon disappear due to virus if they were not constantly being renewed. It is apparently all worth while as they have wonderful perfume and certainly "the photos" showed a lovely loose habit very similar to a fully blown rose with three centre - well done and good luck Jim. Next month is our AGM when I look forward to seeing you all.

Sudbury Rowing Club is situated five minutes from the centre of Sudbury on the Suffolk side of the River Stour, in the middle of scenic Constable country. Rowing and sculling take place on a 1500m stretch of water between a weir at one end of the river and a low bridge with shallow water at the other. The club is active the whole year round, concentrating on competing in side by side racing action in regatta events in the summer, including the Sudbury regatta held in august, this involves crews competing in competitive racing which will be familiar to those who saw the rowing in the Olympics. In the Winter longer time trial events take over, with the club competing in events such as the prestigious ‘Head of the River’ race on the Thames which sees clubs from all over the country competing for a place among the best clubs GB has to offer.

In the last year Sudbury have competed at the ‘Fours Head’ on the Thames and achieved a club best position of 211th out of over 450 crews which included the top clubs in the country, with a strong new crew who are currently preparing for the summer regatta season where they can prove themselves.

2013 was also the year where the clubs only Adaptive rower Sophie Brown won at Women's Henley where she received her medal from olympic champion Katherine Grainger, as well as winning at British Championships, doing herself and the club proud. Achieving a club record of 52 victories in the 2013 regatta season the club looks ahead to a good summer of racing in 2014.

The next event takes the club to Norwich within the coming weeks as winter training continues and preparations for the summer regatta season are made by competing crews.

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts In the January column I wrote about relaying some paths, and in spite of the weather this job is going quite well. It has been a matter of doing an hour whenever it is practical, and as far as possible working from the paths rather than treading on the wet soil. So far it has been a very mild Winter so lots of bulbs are flowering early, and I have one or two geraniums that I did not lift that are still alive. Some fruit buds are bursting and this worries me. If we get some hard frosts after the mild weather it will do a lot of damage.

There are all sorts of gardeners. Some like me dabble growing a lot of different plants passably well, and others are really passionately committed to growing one particular plant perfectly even though it is difficult to grow. One can not but admire the dedication of these gardeners. One of them called Jim Marshall grows Malmaison carnations at Shelley, and gave the February talk to the Garden Club. Malmaison Carnations are very highly scented and showy, but very difficult to propagate and keep in good health. His garden will be open on July 16th.

Weather Records It was interesting to see James Dent's weather statistics in the last HCN. The most surprising thing, when you remember how much rainfall varies locally, was that his figures agreed with the ones from Kate Banks for the annual rainfall. Kate's figures come from conventional approved measuring equipment whereas Jamesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s figures come from modern electronic equipment. In some ways the temperature readings from Jamesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s equipment are more useful to gardeners than the maximum and minimum ones from Kate which may only occur once in the month In January at Kersey there were 74.7 mm (2.9") of rain, which is about 50% higher than our average monthly rainfall. This is the highest value in my records since 1998. It was very close to this in 2003 (73.4 mm). I think we have got away well compared with other parts of the country. I have figures for Holbecks from 1931 to 1986, and in 1939 they recorded 143 mm (5.6") That must have been some wet month.

The 3 monthly total at the end of January was 191 mm (7.5") which is 30% more than the average. So the garden soil is still very wet, and we have had more rain since the end of January. In January the maximum temperature was 10 Cel (50F), which is what we would expect. The minimum temperature for January is highly variable. This year it was -2 Cel (28F) which is at the warmer end of the range. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 5 Cel (41F), which is slightly warmer than average for mid February.

Hints In March we can hope for some nice dry days to tempt us back out into the garden where we shall find a mass of jobs needing urgent attention. In the flower garden we shall find that the weeds are growing much better than the plants and need removing promptly before they seed. There will also be the decision as to what to do with perennial plants that appear to have died during the Winter. Initially it is best to just trim off the obviously dead growth as some of them will throw up fresh growth from ground level. Rose pruning should be completed. If you plan to grow annuals from seed March is the month to get on with it. Hardy annuals can be sown directly in the ground where they are to grow.

For vegetables it is again time to get sowing and planting and there are varieties of just about all of the common vegetables that can be sown in March either under cover or direct in the ground. The main problem is likely to be the condition of the ground. It spoils the structure of the soil if you walk on it when it is so wet that a large layer of it sticks to your boots. If you have a long board that you can lay on the ground and work from this it helps. Do not be in too much of a hurry. This year it will take some time for the ground to dry out.

There has been much talk of “The New Website” at Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare recently. There are also photos of some fluffly little bundles even smaller than me. Yes, we have Guinea Pigs again, long and short haired in pretty colours, ready and waiting for new homes. If they are still with us, some of them will be going to a Pet and Poultry show next month.

This is the weekend when Lavenham, home to so many artists and creative talent, turns into a walking art tour, with 15 open studios throughout the village and exciting and unusual artistic events in the market place.

Our first festival (well, our first for over 50 years!) was held in May 2012 and was such a success, despite the weather, that we couldn't wait to hold another one. Now we're busy organising a bigger, brilliant festival, packed full of something for everyone. We might even be able to do something about the weather as the festival is being held over the second, later (and hopefully warmer and drier) May Bank Holiday Weekend!

We're still at the planning stage and more events and exhibitions will be included but these are the plans so far: There will be a ‘Studio Trail’ with at least 15 local artists opening their studios - or exhibiting at Lavenham Hall and Lavenham Photographic - and they will all be on hand to show their work and discuss it. A once-in-a-year opportunity as they usually work behind closed doors! There will also be three days of fun and activity in the market place. These include: Kate Denton making a sculpture out of a shetland pony. This promises to be an amazing spectacle and you can watch Kate at work from start to finish. Peter Partington drawing live birds of prey. This will be with ‘audience participation’. Come along to see exactly what that means! Vernon Lever and Dave Gilbert will be working with 'budding artists' - local and visiting children - to create and colour in a mural of Lavenham. This was a huge success in 2012, even if Saturday's section turned out a little soggy! Neil rutherford will be demonstrating mould-making, another perfect pastime for children and grown-ups.

There will be pottery exhibitions in our picturesque and historical Little Hall.

Spinners, weavers and tapestry makers will be demonstrating their skills. Other artists and craftspeople including jewellers, quilters, florists and artists who make instant portraits of visitors may also be taking part. There will be a colour programme with a map showing where all the events are taking place.

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre March is already with us and Spring is on it’s way; I think!! Having made references to the need for volunteers it occurred to my simple electronic mind that some of you who would like to join us have doubts in that you are not “Horsey” people and are reluctant to make the first move. Well…..just read what our Chairman, Jan Derbyshire, says and it will dispel any doubts I’m sure.

Jan says “Do you need to be horsey to volunteer at the Shelley Centre for Therapeutic riding? A very simple……No! I’d never been near a horse in my life when I was asked if I would walk along side one helping a disabled child ……I thought I’d last five minutes!

Little did I know that what I thought would be a one off visit has become, 19 years later, one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Arriving apprehensively at the centre set in the most glorious, uplifting, scenic countryside I instantly felt this was a very special place. I was made to feel welcome and introduced to everyone – both two legged and four legged! I’d never heard of Riding for the Disabled so hadn’t realised it’s therapeutic purpose – riding improves muscle tone, breathing, stamina, strength, balance, co-ordination, speech, helps with confidence, communication, teaches teamwork, colours, shapes and stimulates all the senses. I was overwhelmed by the benefits and the variety of disabilities it can help – cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis arthritis, strokes, Parkinson’s, M.S., Down’s Syndrome, autism and many with learning, speech, hearing & sight difficulties. I was very impressed by this. Here is a place that heavily relies on lots of man/woman power – every disabled rider needs three able bodied volunteers – one leading and two side walking.

Realising this and not wanting to scare anyone off – you can do as much as you are comfortable with.

With some training given, I set off walking beside ( helping to relay instructions & making sure they didn’t lose their balance) some very determined, brave & wonderful people who achieved little by little each week. It was so rewarding!

And still is! As time went on, I learnt more and more, went on training courses ( all organised & provided by RDA) and with growing confidence started leading a horse which in turn led to me learning to ride myself. Perhaps my enthusiasm outweighed my lack of equine experience, but to my surprise I was encouraged to become an Instructor – with full training, support and backup, this is a role I still fulfil to this day. I can’t express too highly the commitment, dedication, enthusiasm and sense of fun the team of volunteers at Shelley has – I felt it that first day and wanted to be part of it – it is such a worthwhile cause. It is a very magical, healing place where lives are changed and improved for both the able and disabled. The horses know it too – they have a sixth sense when it comes to our riders and know they have ‘fragile parcels’ on board and behave accordingly.

The part they play must never be underestimated – this therapy produces some amazing results. I never tire at the wonder of it all and love being a part of this fantastic team”. Well? What do you think? It’s easier than you think and very worthwhile knowing what a difference YOU could make to someones life!

Although it is winter there has been and still is lots going on at Hadleigh Bowling Club in Stone Street. During the winter months we try to have at least one social event per month and the New Year kicked off with a race night on 18 January. We also tried a new venture for the club with an afternoon talk on 31 January and the first speaker was Graham Hart who is a new member of the club and told us of his challenge of walking all the “Wainwrights” in the Lake District in one summer in his 60th year. The talk was accompanied by tea and cake and was a great success, so much so that a further talk on his Isle of Man walk is booked for 28 February. The cost is £1.50 including refreshments. We held our Valentines dance on 15 February with live music provided by “Take Two” who had performed at the club previously. It proved to be a great night and for just £5 per head.

We are now the proud possessors of 2 church pews from St Mary’s and they look splendid standing on the veranda. We are grateful for the assistance given

by Jim Wilding from the church in getting these monsters to our club.

We like to get the spring off the a good start by holding a “Pre Season Coffee Morning” which is traditionally provided by the gentlemen of the committee and is an opportunity for potential members to come along and see what the club has to offer from a bowls and social point of view as well as a chance to meet the club coaches and captains to answer any questions they may have.

For the existing members, who do not play short mat during the winter, this offers the chance to catch up with friends and put their names down for the various working parties that are essential to get the whole club ready for the outdoor season which gets under way on 19 April with a drive and “fish and chip” supper. We also have an open weekend on 10 & 11 May at 2 pm where new bowlers can just have a go with our coaches, Sylvia and Doug Doust, on hand to offer advice if needed. Why not come along and have a go, all you need is a pair of flat shoes.

Before that we are restarting an old club tradition of Sunday Roast Lunches on the first Sunday of each month throughout the year starting on 2 March.

Members’ guests are very welcome and the bar will be open from 12.30 with lunch served at 1pm. The cost is £10 per head for a main course and a pudding. Initially you will need to confirm your order 2 weeks in advance but once the event is established we hope that will not be necessary. Why not make it a regular date?

Our ladies are putting on the annual coffee morning on 3 May from 10.00 to midday, the event will include a cake stall, tombola, plants and books.

Admission will be £1 which includes coffee and a biscuit.

We also find time for Short Mat Bowling during the winter months with our 2 league teams, Weavers and Spinners playing in the local Ipswich League.

Results have been mixed but our overall results have been better than last winter. We have also started our own interclub league this season which has added to the opportunities for competitive bowling in addition to our roll ups on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and Sunday Mornings.

There is always something going on in the club 12 months of the year by way of bowling and social events and what better time to get involved than this spring. We would love to see you at our coffee mornings on 22 March and 3 May or the open weekend on 10 & 11 May. Annual membership fees range from £20 upwards, making membership affordable and excellent value.

Newton Seniors Pass £1,000 Charity Mark Charity fund raising for the men’s senior section at Newton Green Golf Club passed the four figure sum for the first time during the last year.

Section retiring captain Bill Havers handed a cheque for £1,030 to Abbi Lang of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) at the annual meeting.

The sum was on top of £278 raised in a one-off gesture during the year for victims of the Philippines hurricane disaster. It was reported half the club’s senior matches against other clubs had been won, and 53 of the section’s 75 members had played in the weekly summer Tuesday Stableford competition.

To enable seniors to achieve more realistic handicaps, it was decided all games in the Thursday Ken Brown Trophy would be played off competition white tees. Mike Norton was elected captain for the coming year and he will be supporting as his charity Canine Partners, which trains dogs for disabled people.

The Old and Bold section may be one of the smallest at Newton Green Golf Club, but it has a big heart when it comes to fund raising.

At the group’s annual meeting retiring captain Michael George handed over a cheque for £947 to Sudbury Salvation Army.

The cheque was received by Captain Emma Knights who, in return, presented the golfers with a certificate of appreciation. This is the first time any group at the club has supported the Salvation Army, and the money will be used for community work.
