The Taste of Sudbury - 11th June The Taste of Sudbury, a fantastic annual event, held in the centre of town, is aimed at celebrating, promoting and showcasing the very best producers, restaurants, chefs and food industries that we are so lucky to have in this part of Suffolk.

The event, on Sunday June 11th will feature a fantastic kitchen theatre where some of Suffolk’s most exciting chefs will be taking to the stage throughout the day including Oliver Macmillan of The Long Melford Swan, award winning James Carn of The Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds, Regis Crepy of The Great House, the Infusions Cookery Experience (ICE) and Rafi’s Spicebox. There will also be demos throughout the day by NEFF chefs courtesy of KSL Kitchens and the chance to win some amazing prizes.

On Market Hill and inside St Peters Church you will find a wonderful selection of over fifty producers and street food vendors including freshly baked bread from Wooster’s Bakery, a wonderful range of culinary herbs from Herbal Haven, locally produced biltong, a fantastic range of olives, marinades and sauces from Scarlett and Mustard, chilli sauces from The East Coast Chilli Company and fruit and berry infused vodkas and gins from The Tiny Tipple Company. Hot food stalls will include Longhorn beef burgers, Mac n Cheese, gourmet chorizo sandwiches and bowls of cheesy nachos.

Entry to the event is totally free of charge. Parking in town is free and there will be a free Park and Ride system in place, all day, starting at 9.45am from The Delphi Car Park, Newton Road, Sudbury, CO10 2RR. The free bus will run every 15 minutes. There will be no bus service between 1pm and 2pm.

St Gregory’s Church Sudbury Happy Hour Concerts One down, three to go!

Hugest thanks to all who came to our first Happy Hour Concert and who gave so generously. An excellent start to the Organ Restoration Fund. The audience enjoyed a social time afterwards with a glass of wine and it was lovely to see a really good mix of people from within our church and from the town.

The next one is on Friday June 2nd starting at 7pm. We are very lucky that Stephen Cleobury, Director of Music at Kings College Cambridge, is very generously giving a recital on our organ in aid of the Restoration Fund.

Suffolk County Council (SCC) having announced in 2015 a totally revised way of supporting community transport, from June last year we have provided (with the help of our friends at GoStart in Sudbury) transport for residents throughout the Babergh District. We now operate three services under the name of “Rural Transport – Connecting Communities”, based on Hadleigh, Lavenham and the Shotley peninsula. These, on request, bring passengers from outlying villages without a bus service to where they want to go within a defined area or to connect with bus services for onward travel. For those without access to transport of their own we operate the Dial-a-Ride (DAR) service in and around Hadleigh.

HCTG are currently running a service taking passengers to Ipswich Hospital for appointments. (This service is currently being reviewed.)

We also operate the Wheels-within-Wheels (WwW) service for those who cannot access normal transport or who require a door-to-door service.

Having acquired three minibuses for the new services, one for the Dial-A-Ride service and a smaller accessible car in addition to the three sixteen-seater minibuses that we already owned, we now have quite a fleet to maintain. We operate services from Hadleigh to Manningtree and Ipswich, from Whatfield to Ipswich, from Ipswich to Shotley and from Hadleigh to Stowmarket (all sponsored by SCC). The vehicles are also used for other work such as school transport and are available for group hire to organisations in and around Hadleigh e.g. for trips to the theatre or the seaside.

Bedding-in all the systems required with the changes in financial support and the maintenance responsibilities has kept the small team in our office fully occupied, especially our manager. HCTG rely on the drivers we employ to help provide a high level of service and in return we have the policy of paying at least the Living Wage rather than just the legal minimum wage. The challenge in the next few years will be in maintaining and renewing our fleet with reducing support from SCC. Our committee are local people from Hadleigh and Lavenham: we are seeking more volunteers to serve on it.

Following our successful planning application, work has begun on the Suffolk Long House. Already 27 new students have had a hand in working on the green oak timber frame. They have been learning how to lay out the massive timbers, mark them up and (after several checks), and finally cut mortise and tenons. The oak they are learning and working on has come from Raydon Great Woods where Orchard Barn Volunteers help the woodsman each month with the restoration of the ancient woods.

Further collaboration and learning took place when Volunteers from Greenways Conservation Project (Ipswich) brought their mobile sawmill to the woods and converted two windblown oaks into timber for two bays of the old house.

OBee CIC is organising a FREE Tree to Timber event 10-4 on Saturday 29th July. It is funded by Suffolk Community Foundation. There will be talks, demonstrations, tours and hands-on taster sessions. Sorry, no mobile saw mill, but lots of traditional hand tools and techniques using locally sourced green wood! Put this date in your diary and come along and see what we do.

Squirrels This half term, Squirrel Class have started to learn about Transport.

The children spent time designing and creating their own transport from junk modelling. Examples included hot air balloons, army tanks, rockets and a cable car. We recently enjoyed a fantastic trip to Wattisham air base where the children particularly enjoyed looking at the different types of vehicles and trying on uniform. We were even lucky enough to see one of their helicopters take off from the air base. We have lots to look forward this half term including the police coming in to visit and teach us about road safety, a class trip to Ipswich Transport Museum and our class assembly.

Hedgehogs Hedgehogs class have had a busy few weeks learning about different types of transport and how they have changed over the years. We enjoyed visiting Wattisham airfield and seeing the helicopters. Next week we are visiting Ipswich transport museum and going on a train ride. We are very excited!

In PE we have been developing our hockey skills. We have been practising dribbling the ball, dribbling through cones and passing the ball. We have also been learning a Bollywood dance.

Badgers In Badgers class we have been developing our ICT skills by coding our own stories based on the legend of Baba Yaga. We have also been coding machinery as well as creating the front of our board games on Paint and Word.

We have been focusing on the topic of Russia this half term and have been busy making our own scrap books at home. In our Art lesson we have used images of Russian gymnasts to create a piece of art where it looks like the athlete is flying through the air.

We are also really excited to be starting our Roman topic next term, which includes a trip to Colchester Castle.

Owls Owls have been learning about the Shang Dynasty this half term, finding out about some of the great Ancient Chinese emperors and their powerful warriors- we now know how both the rich and the poor people lived and why they chose to settle near the Yellow River. In Science, we have been focusing on light and shadows, and we are currently making our own shadow puppets and writing a script to put on a shadow puppet play. Y6s completed their SATs last week and at the end of the week, we all enjoyed a fun picnic on the Glebe to celebrate; Y5s were very supportive of the Y6s and we all deserved our treat!

Stoke-by-Nayland WEA Stoke-by-Nayland WEA presents its Annual Day School at Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall, Saturday, 15th July 2017, 10 am.

‘DEFENDING THE HARBOUR’ Landguard Fort, Felixstowe by Dave Wood Landguard Fort is situated on a peninsular, opposite Harwich and where the Rivers Stour and Orwell join to flow into the North Sea. It has a long rich history, but its major triumph is the preventing of the last full scale invasion of England by the Dutch on 2nd July 1667 - exactly 350 years ago this summer!

By 1900 the Fort was obsolete, until the problem of reliability of large bore breech loading artillery was resolved. The Fort was manned throughout both World Wars, but by the 1950s the rocket age had arrived and in 1956 Coastal Artillery was finally closed down Dave Wood has been involved with Landguard Fort since the 1980s and was present when the first guided tours were carried out..

Total cost is just ÂŁ19 including coffee on arrival and the talk by Dave Wood in the morning - followed by a buffet lunch.

In the afternoon a coach will take us to the Landguard Fort for a visit. We will have the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of the Fort. The coach fare, entry to the Fort and the guided tour are included in the cost. Tea and snacks are available in the Fort or in a nearby beach cafe (cost not included).

Suitable footwear should be worn. Early booking is recommended.

Perhaps you remember, or maybe youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard tell of, the days when, with entertainment unavailable over the airwaves, or on line, many villages had their own Brass Bands to provide music in the community.

Well, even in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fully â&#x20AC;&#x153;connectedâ&#x20AC;? world, Elmsett still does! In fact Elmsett Fellowship Brass Band in its current incarnation was formed in 1981 with a number of local residents, young and old, taking the trouble at that time to learn a new skill and/or instrument. We are pleased to say that some of them are still playing with the band today. The band members give their time freely and enjoy playing a variety of music to entertain the public at concerts, fetes, garden parties and Church services. Money raised from performances is used to support local and National charities such as the Hospices and Action for Children. We all thoroughly enjoy playing for our own pleasure and for that of those who come and listen.

Our players congregate regularly for Monday night practices throughout the year and we are always on the look out for new playing members. If you are perhaps a lapsed brass player and would be interested in reviving your skills please do get in touch - the band have a limited number of spare instruments available for loan to players. Alternatively, come along to one of our events to meet us for a chat.

This summer, one of Shakespeare's most enchanting and enthralling comedies is coming to Lavenham Hall.

As You Like It, co-directed by Paul Vella and Clare James, is the third outdoor Shakespeare production produced by Lavenham Players. Our previous two productions, 2013's Much Ado About Nothing and 2015's Twelfth Night, were both sell-out shows, drawing spectators both from the village and beyond, and received acclaimed reviews.

This summer's effort promises to be no exception, with a talented cast and crew ready to once again bring the Bard's work to life in the beautiful and stunning grounds of Lavenham Hall. Photos are attached of both actors and picnickers at the last production in 2015.

As You Like It is a joyful journey into the Forest of Arden, where normal rules no longer apply. It is an enchanting and whimsical tale of love, honour, confusion and the clash between country life and the world of the court.

There's even a wrestling match! And of course, it wouldn't be a Shakespeare comedy without girls dressing up as boys...

Sudbury Dramatic Society are following up their successful production of The Ladykillers with an adaptation of Edith Nesbitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s story of The Railway Children on at Sudburyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Quay Theatre from Tuesday 4th to Saturday 8th July at 7.45pm. This adaptation of Edith Nesbitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book by Mike Kenny is the same script as the one that has been successfully performed at railway stations in London and York, although SDS canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t provide a real-life steam train at The Quay!

When their father is wrongly arrested, three children and their mother are forced to move to the country near to the village railway station.

There, they make friends with Perks the station Porter, the travellers on the train, they rescue a lost Russian and an injured runner, before being finally being reunited with their father. A grown-up Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis take us through the story as they recall the time when they really were The Railway Children. The Railway Children is being directed by Linda Dowdall who has directed and acted in various SDS productions, including a recent cameo as a little old lady in The Ladykillers! Following an appeal in Marchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Community News, the Village Newsletter and posters around Elmsett, the photo shows the nine people who collected their high vis jackets, safety instructions, bags and pickers from the village hall on Saturday 22 April. Volunteers chose the area that they wanted to pick and when they would do it. Although the pick was focused on 22 - 23 April, as the idea was to clear as much of Elmsett from litter as possible, other volunteers who were not able to be there on that Saturday had agreed to clear an area at another time. Elmsett Parish Council who supported the campaign thank the volunteers for helping and Babergh District Council for supplying the bags and pickers and high vis jackets.

Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together Suffolk Farm Fair On Thursday 20 April, children from Years 3 and 4 went to the School Farm Fair at the Suffolk Showground in Ipswich. The day allowed the children to experience many different aspects of farming, food production and the countryside with demonstrations and interactive ‘hands on’ exhibits.

It also enabled pupils to understand the relationship between the crops grown in the fields to the end products found in the shops. Our coach was partially funded by Suffolk Agricultural Association and we would like to thank them for helping us.

Where the River Runs The children were able to enjoy an exciting piece of dance theatre created by Full House called “Where the River Runs”, a show set in an unknown place deep in the wilderness which was an energetic yet simple story of a brave adventurer on an environmental mission. Children from our collaborated school, Whatfield Primary, were able to share this event with our children.

Enrichment Design and Technology Event Four of our children were selected to attend a Design and Technology Enrichment Session hosted by Kersey Primary School on Tuesday 28 March.

Able Maths Event Two of our children were fortunate enough to enjoy an able maths session held at Chilton Primary School. They had a rewarding day working with one of the UK’s leading maths tutors, Julia Smith. Julia has been running maths workshops privately and in schools for many years and our children gained a great deal from working with her throughout the day.

Royal Hospital School XC Run Selected Year 5 and 6 pupils went to the Royal Hospital School to compete in a cross country event on Wednesday 29 March. Children from across the county took part and our children did exceptionally well with William in Year 6 coming 6th in his category and Joshua in Year 6 coming in 14th position. All of the pupils deserve a special mention though as the course was long!

British Cycling Mountain Bike Sessions We have been very fortunate to secure British Cycling UK to run some “Go Ride” sessions at school with our Year 5 children. Go-Ride is British Cycling's development programme for young people. The programme provides a fun and safe way to introduce young riders to the world of cycle sport and provides a platform to improve bike handling skills Wattisham Airfield Hare Class children were invited to the Visitors Day at Wattisham Airfield on Wednesday 3 May 2017. The children had an opportunity to look at an Apache helicopter and other military aircraft. They were also able to walk round and view the exhibits in the military museum, including the small arms display.

SATs Breakfasts Due to the success last year of our SATs breakfast club, we offered the same club for our current Year 6 pupils. During the week of their tests they were able to come into school to enjoy some breakfast with their friends. This also gave them the opportunity to get into school on time and to settle ready for their day.

Netball Tournament On Monday 15 May a team of our Years 5 and 6 pupils played in a Netball Tournament against the schools in the Hadleigh Pyramid.

Several schools took part with fair play and sportsmanship being the theme running through the tournament. We were so proud of our team as they came fourth overall.

Stowmarket set to feel the rhythm with the 7th annual StowBlues Festival The ever-popular StowBlues festival returns on Saturday 10th June 2017, with an electric line-up of 7 live bands, bringing a taster of authentic Americana Blues to Suffolk.

Live acts include singersongwriter Paolo Morena, the stunning vocals of Malaya Blues and firm StowBlues favourites Back Porch, all ready to bring a unique and unmissable blend of Blues, Delta Blues, uptempo Rock, Roots and Rock and Roll.

Organised in conjunction with BBC Radio Suffolk, the event has been able to attract a succession of quality bands.

The event also benefits from the expertise of Mike Rushmore, a well-known name in the East Anglian Blues scene. With a CAMRA supported real ale bar, the event hosts a selection of ales from brewers from across the region including Calvors, Earl Soham Brewery and Colchester Town Brewery.

Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers For June’s walk on Saturday 17th we will take the 91 bus service towards Sudbury, alight at Newton Green and walk to Sudbury via Goulding’s Farm, Cornard Mere and Henny Street where we will stop for a short rest at the delightful Henny Swan. Then on to Sudbury bus station via Sheepcote, The Stour Valley Path and Ballingdon. This walk is about 7.5 miles in length. We will catch the 0950 bus at the Hadleigh bus station (Coop side) arriving at Newton Green at 1010. We should be in good time to catch the 1400 return bus from Sudbury. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre The horse racing evening was a great success I hear, and made a whopping £2,000 for the Centre. Apparently people were crying with laughter at the antics of the jockeys on Rob’s wonderful racing steeds. I have just heard about another racing steed at The Museum of Horse Racing in Newmarket, it’s a cousin of mine, another simulator, but set to go much faster than me. If you see it yourself, think of me, and what great technology fits inside my insides to make me work for our riders. I am very proud to be part of this innovative scene!

We had six riders for the Own A Pony Day. They came in all shapes and sizes but of course the herd can cope with that. From Parys to Cindy (and the Shetlands) everyone was matched to a suitable Owner.

They made up the beds in the stables, filled hay nets and buckets, had snacks, fetched in their ponies, groomed them and settled down for a picnic lunch and to do a quiz.

Then came the fun riding part consisting of a 2.5k hack and a game of musical sacks in the arena. Rugs went on, the horses were returned to their fields and tea rounded off the afternoon. I think our ‘owners’ did a great job and learnt a lot about horse care during the day.

Someone who has learnt even more about horses and horse care is Rebecca Jackaman seen here receiving her Grade 4 certificate from Sue Diggins. That smile says it all; she has had to work very hard to achieve this result and we are all very proud of her.

Just to change from horses to DOGS now, don’t miss the second Shelley Fun Dog Show on July 8th! Starting at 10.00 you can register for any one of 9 classes; bring the family to enjoy a great day out with BBQ, children’s games, a Dog Agility course, cakes, raffle and the usual fabulous, happy Shelley atmosphere.

Half-way through the year already and the Summer months are pretty baron astronomically because technically it doesn't get totally dark and the sky is bathed in twilight until the Sun begins to rise again. The night sky will not have complete darkness until July 27th and onward . For those interested, the nights begin 'pulling in' on June 29th.

But with limited darkness, we can still do some work and our targets this month are as follows.

The Moon Full 9th June; Last Quarter 17th June; New 24th June.

The Sun Summer Solstice is on June 21st at 05.24. Sunrise on this day is at 04.35, and Sunset is at 21.20.

The Planets Venus is a morning object that is located very low down in twilight. A good photo opportunity occurs on the 20th when Venus will be a little above a Waning crescent Moon.

Jupiter Is the large yellow object dominating the southern sky in the evening and shining at magnitude -2.1, it cannot be missed and is within the Zodiacal constellation of Virgo.

Saturn This month sees Saturn reach opposition on the 15th, that is to say, that the Earth is directly between the Sun and Saturn. It is shining at magnitude 0.0 and again, cannot be mistaken. On the night of the 10th, the planet will be visible below the Waning gibbous Moon.

The Summer Triangle Dominating the Summer sky is a familiar group of three constellations that are collectively known as the 'Summer Triangle', a phrase that was coined many years ago by the late Sir Patrick Moore on one of his Sky At Night tv shows.

From the map here, you can see how it got its name and if you go outside on any Summer evening you will spot it directly overhead . The three principle stars are very bright and sweeping the area with a pair of even modest binoculars will reveal star-rich fields that are the Milky Way. Deneb is the leading star of Cygnus. A massive star at some 203 times the radius of our Sun, (which itself is 695,500 km) and some 196,000 times brighter. The surface temperature is in the order of 8,000 degrees Celsius (our Sun is 6,000 degrees C), and it lies some 802 light years from us, meaning that the light entering your retinas today began its journey from its host in the year 1215, the year of the Magna Carta. This star has a mass of some 19 times that of our Sun, and because of this, its ultimate fate will be to go supernova in the distant future.

Altair is much closer to us than Deneb at just 17 light years away. The surface temperature is in the order of 7,700 degrees Celsius and it has a mass of 1.79 Sun's and a diameter of 1.63 Sun's. It is the only star other than our Sun which has had its surface clearly seen and visually it appears 'squashed', or an oblate spheroid as we call it. This is due to the star's rapid rotation which causes it to bulge at the equator.

And finally, Vega. A stunning blue-coloured star, Vega is again a close neighbour to our Sun, lying at just 25 light years away. It is roughly 2 times the size of the Sun, and twice the radius. The surface temperature is around 10,000 degrees C. Vega was once our pole star back in the year 12,000 B.C, and will again be so in the distant year of 13,727 A.D. This star is also young by cosmic standards at just half a billion years old, but because it is burning through its fuel reserves at a vast rate, the star will die young too when it reaches 1 billion years old, our Sun by comparison is middle-aged right now at 4.5 billion years old. Its other distinction is that it was the first star (other than the Sun) imaged by photograph in 1850.

PPG Awareness week is a national initiative which will be widely advertised nearer the time. If you visit the Hadleigh or Boxford Surgery in the week beginning Monday June 19 you may well meet members of the Patient Participation Group, who will be able to tell you more about the purpose of the group and how it operates. Nicky Willshere, Chief Officer at Ipswich Citizens Advice, used Dementia Awareness Week to highlight the importance of properly planning for the future.

“When someone receives a diagnosis it is understandable that they will take some time to process what it means to them and their family,” she says. “However, by taking positive action and controlling what choices can be made on your behalf, when and by whom, it can take a lot of worry out of the future.

“Organising your affairs is prudent at any time but should you or a loved one face a diagnosis of Dementia or Alzheimer’s, one of the most important things you can do to ensure your wishes are carried out is to thoroughly review and update your financial and legal affairs. “This could be as simple as updating contact information and details on existing legal papers such as leases, insurance policies, agreements, other contracts or just writing a will. However, in more complex cases it may be that you want to consult a solicitor to appoint guardians or enact a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)“ How can Gotelee help? Sudbury Choral Society’s Summer Concert 2017 After their excellent rendition of Elijah in their 70th anniversary concert in April, Sunday 2nd July sees the Sudbury Choral Society move from their standard fare of oratorios and classical music to Songs from the Silver Screen.

The choir will be singing in a variety of styles and genre’s with excerpts from “The Wizard of Oz”, a selection of James Bond themes not to mention “Grease” and medleys by Cole Porter and Paul Simon. The choir will also be supported by performances by “The Accidentals”, our local female singing group some of whom sing in the choir. As part of their programme for supporting young soloists just starting out on their musical careers we will be again welcoming Laura Barnard a local singer who is studying musical theatre at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Laura has already been chosen for roles on the stage in the West End of London and is a soloist with the National Youth Music Theatre. Also in July the choral society are promoting a concert by Tony Halsted Horn Ensemble on Sunday the 23rd July at 3 pm which features some of the best French Horn players in the country.

Kersey Mill Newsletter With the warmer weather upon us visitor numbers have risen.

There have been private group tours along with the many people taking advantage of the sunny days and leisurely touring the Mill & taking a look around the beautiful gardens which are now leafy and green.

We had record numbers of visitors from near and far who enjoyed seeing the fine cars and enjoying the various attractions, touring the Mill & art gallery, sampling delicious cakes & enjoying the home made produce on the BBQ & The Copper Kettle. Much needed funds were raised from the raffle and cake stall, proceeds being split between the Friends of Kersey Mill Restoration Fund and the Alzheimer’s Society.

Our annual competition for “Best in Show” was nominated by a non-car person, this really means “what car would they like to take home?” Amy Day from The Flower Shop was nominated as judge; she faced a very difficult task, after much deliberation she chose a beautiful red Porsche owned by Richard Wilding who can be seen receiving a bouquet presented by Amy. A very big thank you to all those that attended the event, helped with fund raising, donated and to all the marshals that gave up precious time, you all contributed significantly in making the day a huge success.

The following Sunday we were delighted to host the start of the CVCVC Cento Miglia in the morning and to also welcome The Classic Car Club of Bury St Edmunds that afternoon.

It was recently National Mills Open Weekend, it was nice to see a good number of people some visiting us for the first time and others returning whilst visiting a number of mills.

The roof repairs over the wheel-house have been completed and the scaffold removed. The wildlife around the mill has woken and with the warmer weather.

The House Martins ,Swallows and Swifts have all returned from the winter in the South, the Kestrels are sitting on 5 eggs, (these are being monitored via our cameras and can be seen through video link in The Suffolk Craft Shop). this is the 5th year running that they have used this site. We are expecting the chicks will appear late May/ early June. We also now have two pairs of swans are nesting too. So it will be exciting to see new life beginning here at the Mill soon.

Milden Events Milden has enjoyed two great social events in the past month on April 22nd the Fun Quiz hosted by Andrea and Laure raised £405 for Milden Pavilion, with some amusing games during the evening!

At the beginning of May The Milden Singers provided their best concert to date, according to the audience, raising £1026 with £320 donated to Marie Curie Cancer Care from the Raffle. Their next concerts will be on 17th and 18th November.

Milden Pavilion offered Milden Residents the opportunity to attend an accredited Emergency First Course by SRE First Aid Training. Due to the demand plans are underway to host another evening course along with one specifically for the younger members of the community funded by Milden Pavilion.

My brother Oliver is a doughnut! I say that out of complete respect for my sibling. He thinks I am a technosaurus because I am not on Facebook, I tell him Alexander Graham Bell gave us a perfectly good method of communication long before Facebook arrived! My brother snorts with derision.

But then I’m not the one who hired a van to deposit our mother’s belongings here in Hadleigh only to discover he couldn’t find his credit card to pay the deposit! Nice one, Bruv. This one’s for you and it comes courtesy of aforementioned social media website. It is extremely tasty and can be adapted for vegetarians by leaving out the bacon and using vegetarian cheese.

Hasselback cheesy potatoes Quantities depend on whether this is a main or side dish and how many you are serving. This example is for a side dish for 4 or a main for two hungry people!

4 large shallots (banana or pink variety) or 8 small brown shallots.

8 medium potatoes (any variety as long as they are waxy, like new potatoes, or general purpose like King Edwards) sliced ¾ of the way through – see photo Olive Oil; 8 cubes butter (as big as you like); Salt Garlic to taste, sliced; Small glass white wine (optional) Finely chopped bacon (optional – lardons are best) 400g Brie (or similar soft cheese) cut into large pieces 200g Gruyere (or similar) grated; Approximately 200ml double cream.

Method: Cut the shallots into halves and place evenly in an ovenproof dish.

Clean the potatoes but do not peel. Then slice evenly three quarters of the way through making sure that you do not fully slice – THIS IS IMPORTANT. They will fan out during the cooking. Place potatoes in the dish with the shallots, pour on a little oil, place the butter on top of each potato and then salt to taste. Place in the oven at 200oC for an hour. Remove from the oven and add the garlic slices, bacon and wine (if you wish - it works well as a vegetarian dish). Place the Brie evenly over the top and then cover with the grated Gruyere. Finally pour over the cream and return to the oven for a further 15 minute. Remove and enjoy!

Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 23 (Summer 2017) This seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s issue contains lots of shorter articles illustrated with old picture postcards, modern photographs and family tree. It was a family tree drawn up in the mid-19th century by an unscrupulous genealogist that was not discovered to be incorrect for over one hundred years. According to the pedigree, through the marriage of Mary Revett in the mid-17th century, a family from Derbyshire believed that they were related to the Revetts, manorial lords of Bildeston.

Four 15th century timber framed houses in Chapel Street are examined for their original appearance, which can still be traced even though the buildings were sub-divided to accommodate thirteen households in the 19th century. The layout of medieval houses is explained with Nos.23-33 Chapel street used as an example. The history of a lost public house is investigated, lost that is, until now! The Cock is still standing in High street but it was not recognised for what it was until the ownership and occupancy were researched. At one time, the building became Bildestonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unofficial rectory, then the home of two doctors from 1781 to 1804. Currently, it is for sale under its present name. Can you guess which building it is?

The occasional series â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Fields with historyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; returns with the story of two pieces of arable land named Stubbins, the rents from which went towards supporting almshouses in Hadleigh. Early 20th century photographs illustrate a brief history of Bildestonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Salvation Army Corps. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Extracts from the diary of William Freeman Squirrellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; have reached 1877 to 1879, when circuses, travelling menageries and the notorious Madame Rachel visited the village; charity land was mortgaged to pay for restoration of the church; and the coconut-fibre factory closed. Ray Bridger of Monks Eleigh and Eva Hart of Bildeston are thanked for naming people appearing in bildestonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Coronation Parade of 1937 and in Bildeston section of the National Fire Service in 1942. Chelsworth Open Gardens Day 50th Anniversary Sunday, 25th June 2017 11am – 5pm Chelsworth is a picturesque village situated in the beautiful Brett Valley in Suffolk, just a few miles from Lavenham and is regarded as one the prettiest villages in the country. This will be the 50th year that residents in the village have opened their wonderful private gardens to the public on the last Sunday in June. HIDDEN GARDENS of HADLEIGH

On April 27th a stalwart group of members set out on a cold wet day for the first of the summer garden visits. In the morning, we arrived at The Dip on the Hill, at Ousden, Newmarket, and were given a warm welcome by Dr and Mrs. Geoffrey Ingham, who created this wonderful architectural, largely evergreen, garden. Situated on a south facing hill, meandering pathways led us through cloud- pruned hedges, sculptural trees, shrubs and groundcover. Pines and a grove of Philyrea latifolia, palms and a large bamboo, were underplanted with ferns, and lily of the valley were just beginning to flower. Dr. Ingham explained how he shaped and pruned large overgrown shrubs to form the sculptural shapes he needed. A fascinating visit to a highly original garden.

In the afternoon, we were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Alastair Robinson, who have created a stunning garden at Ousden House. Despite the wind and rain, they guided us round the herbaceous borders, rose garden, summerhouse lawn and borders, ornamental woodland and lake, (beside which stood a wonderful sculpture of a mare and foal). A spectacular long double crinklecrankle yew hedge leads from the clock tower, and a moat garden with gentle fountains was densely planted with moisture loving plants. There were so many rambling paths leading us through avenues of flowering cherry, and scented flowering shrubs, that it was an absolute joy to explore it all, even in the rain! To warm us all up, we were treated to a wonderful tea, with sandwiches and home-made cakes.

I will certainly be going back to visit again, when it is opened for the NGS on June 11th, hopefully in better weather.

The next outing to Spencers, at Great Yeldham, is on the 4th June, followed by the Summer Social at Stoke Priory, Stoke by Nayland on June 27th. Full details of these events will be found on the website.

Down to Earth ...with Dave When any group of gardeners meet at the moment the main topic of conversation is rain, or more likely, the total lack of any meaningful amounts in this area. It's amazing that the gardens are looking so good. I have gathered together a few ideas to try and help. Fit water butts complete with diverter kits fo save any rainwater that we do get, a bit late now but worth doing for the future. Any roof will do, be it house, shed, garage or greenhouse just as long as they have gutters and downpipes. Raise the butts off the ground to make access easier for a watering can. Water butts should be cleaned out annually to prevent the spread of disease. Now might be a good time as, like mine, they are probably empty. Use collected water on established plants and not on seedlings, tap water only on seeds and seedlings.

Domestic wastewater or grey water can also be used in the garden. This can be from the kitchen, the washing machine or the bath. Household soaps and detergents are harmless to plants, but avoid bleaches, disinfectants, dishwasher salts and strong cleaning products as they can harm plants and possibly damage soil structure. Use on vegetable crops is also best avoided, and don't store the water for too long as it can start to smell. Water in the early morning or in the evening to prevent evaporation by the hot sun. Also direct the water at the base of the plant, not on the leaves.

A generous mulch on the beds will help to contain any moisture that is present in the ground. Anything will do, homemade compost, spent mushroom compost, bark chippings or the recycled soil improver recently available from the council for free. Put it on good and thick, this will also help to keep down the weeds. Why give them precious water? Pots can be a problem when it is dry as they are entirely dependant upon you for their water. The bigger the pot, the easier it is to keep watered, small pots dry out much quicker. Put saucers under all the pots, terracotta pots can be lined with old compost bags to prevent evaporation. Group pots together to create a little humid micro climate, add a mulch of something like gravel or slate chippings, it looks good and it helps to minimise evaporation. Lawns can be vast users of water but only if you insist on having perfectly green grass, relax and let the lawn go a bit brown.

It will not die and will soon green up again when we do get some rain, let the grass grow a bit longer and create its own shade. It is perhaps not the best time to sow a new lawn or to lay turf, if you do then it will need a lot of watering, perhaps best left to the autumn. It's not all bad as the slugs and snails don't like the dry weather and are leaving my hostas alone. Don't forget to leave out water for the birds to drink and bathe in.

Hadleigh and District Garden Club Monday May 8th 2017 For our May meeting we welcomed Rob Tibbs who gave a timely presentation on patio planting. It was good to see so many attend the first indoor session of our 2017/2018 programme and we all came away with new ideas for planting schemes. Rob is an engaging speaker and we will be seeing him again later in the year.

We certainly enjoy a wide variety of subjects at the garden club, and whilst I suspect the number of us having forests to test our horticultural skills is few, we look forward to learning what Jonathan Barker has to say on the subject at our next meeting. The Food Station The Food Station is a Suffolk based catering company re-launched in the area by the new owners Emma Bennett and Dominic Carter.

Both Emma and Dominic are well established within the local hospitality industry and passionate about food and customer service.

Plenty of members who have been through the same thing who you can have a chat and cup of coffee with.

Hadleigh optometrist returns from Africa Optometrist Holly Coleman of D J Dunstone Optometry has just returned from two weeks providing eye care in Ethiopia. The trip was with the charity Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) and in conjunction with Grarbet Tehadiso Mahber hospital. Clinics were held in Butajira, Ziway and surrounding rural communities. As well as examining eyes, Holly was providing support and training to local optometrists and ophthalmic nurses. With the help of translators she would screen for trachoma and other treatable diseases, as well as dispensing much needed spectacles when necessary. Hollyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trip was funded by the Practice and has made a significant contribution to help those with poor sight in Ethiopia. She was part of a team of five optometrists who together examined 772 patients and dispensed 488 pairs of spectacles.

VAO supplies predominantly new spectacles to patients although some pairs are recycled. Donated used spectacles are now sold by the charity to help support training and equipment to promote independence and sustainability of eye care in the future. The Practice will continue to collect used spectacles for VAO and so if you have any that are no longer required please do drop them off at 3 Queen Street. The house is like a woodland cottage lately. A pheasant chick, suspended above the Rayburn quietly cheeps. A recovering blackbird gently taps on his cage. Hedgehogs rustle in their winter quarters ready for release - then Ollie trots in with a baby rabbit in his mouth. Did he look silly when Mum returned it to the field after checking it over! Thank you to everyone who helped raise ÂŁ2500 at our Spring Sale in Long Melford. Visitors enjoyed chatting to our Volunteers including local wildlife guru, George Millins and his assistant, Jules. I enjoyed modelling our new "Kenny Range" of jewellery, handmade by our talented crafters!

Our next big event is our Open Day and Fun Dog Show on 30th July. All pooches welcome to join in the fun (with their humans) including a special class for ex-SESAW dogs. In the meantime, unwind at our Summer Dance featuring local band â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sound Brigadeâ&#x20AC;? 7.30pm on 1st July at Assington Village Hall. Animals awaiting new homes include Bex, a shy, short haired tabby and white cat, dumped by her owner in London. By contrast, an active family is required for nine year old Poppy the Beagle, overlooked because of her age. She enjoys her walks and has lots of love and cuddles to give in exchange for a nice warm bed and a caring home. Time for me to go now because I can smell food! Must be dinner time for all the dogs, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

Fidelis Activity News Old sayings have become so much part of our language that their origins have long since been forgotten. In a recent talk, Pater Banham, who has researched many of them, revealed the fascinating and often unexpected roots of the most common expressions. His audience were given an opportunity to guess before Peter explained the true origins. Not surprisingly many have evolved from ancient nautical terminology and several from the wool and cloth industry of yesteryears. A most interesting talk which was much enjoyed.

Sweet Memories I have been enjoying watching my sweet peas over the last weeks as they have been growing up and around the canes; not just because itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fun to see things you have planted spring to life but also because they hold sentimental value.

When my Grandma died a few years ago, my mum took some of the seeds from the sweet peas in her garden and subsequently planted them in hers. When they had grown, she took some of those seeds and gave them to me, which I then grew and then harvested the seeds from those in turn. Now that these are coming up they are both a wonderful new bit of life and colour and a beautiful reminder of happy memories of my grandparents and their fabulous garden.

When my husband and I moved into the village almost two years ago exactly, the garden we inherited had been neglected and was overrun and in a bit of a state. Slowly, when time has allowed, we have been bringing it back into order, spending the first year just removing a lot of chaos: largely bramble with a heavy sprinkling of nettle, ivy and elder. But by doing so we have discovered lots of wonderful plants that had been forgotten and hidden but now after some TLC give us great joy. With things relatively under control, we now have the fun of adding and creating our own garden ideas to be appreciated for years to come.

If you love gardening, perhaps like me you will be planning all sorts of planting schemes and ideas to enjoy in the future. (Although I like to include some quick-hit changes too each year because patience may be a virtue with gardening but sometimes itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nice to see something a little quicker off the mark to enthuse and interest.) If you are not so keen on doing the physical work or perhaps donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the space, we are lucky to live in an area where there are some lovely places to walk amongst nature and there you will surely be able to spot some fabulous plants from the past that are wonderful to look at now.

Hadleigh Cycling Club will be running the third annual Gayford Flyer on Sunday, 10th September 2017. The Gayford Flyer is a non-competitive cycle sportive. There are two signed rides of 62 miles (100km) and 31 miles (50km).

Entry is via the British Cycling website (www.britishcycling.org.uk) and the last day for entering is Sunday, 3rd September. There is no entry on the day. Riders pay £10 to enter and helmets are compulsory. “Last year’s sportive was fantastic”, said Mike Motteram, Chairman of Hadleigh Cycling Club. “Most of the riders and their families stayed around and enjoyed refreshments and live music at The George.”

The Committee wants to thank all the volunteers and juniors who helped to promote the Club at this year’s Hadleigh Show. Despite the odd shower, plenty of children had a chance to cycle the course.

Riders are invited to gentle social rides starting at 8am from The George on Sundays, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. Sudbury Life Saving Club 2017 sees the Sudbury Life Saving Club reach its 50th Anniversary and to celebrate the club is hosting a reunion event on Saturday 22nd July at the Sudbury Snooker Club in North Street from 7pm.

The Club was launched on the back of a local disaster in 1966, when three young brothers drowned during the same tragic incident in the River Stour.

Over the years the club has had more than 300 members with many gaining nationally recognised Life Saving qualifications with members competing both at regional and national events. The Club meets every Sunday evening at the Kingfisher Leisure Pool from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and new members aged 8 and up are always welcome. Sudbury Life Saving Club are inviting all past and current members to attend the reunion on 22nd July to remember the past 50 years and look forward to the future.

I want to use this column to do two things. First I want to thank all those who voted for me in the Cosford ward in the Suffolk County Council election. I won by 111 votes (1630). The new Conservative got 1,519, UKIP 115 and Labour 106. Secondly I want to tell you that I am standing as the Green Party parliamentary candidate for South Suffolk.

I am standing because I feel that the conventional politicians are abandoning local communities and local economies in the bid to chase infinite economic growth.

I’m pleased and honoured to be able to represent people on Suffolk County Council, but the council’s ability to improve people’s lives has itself been seriously weakened and almost destroyed by successive Labour and Conservative Governments taking ever more power and money to Whitehall over the past 40 years.

With occasional help from LibDems, they have not only centralised power: they have also kowtowed to corporate lobbyists, allowing giant developers, chain stores and other corporations to hollow out local economies. This is why so many across South Suffolk feel angry and abandoned. Brexit was supposed to be about taking back control. But there is no sign that the three conventional parties want to give back control to local communities. Our outdated First-Past-The-Post voting system is rigged in the two big parties’ favour both nationally and locally.

In the 2015 Babergh District Council elections, Conservatives won 40% of the votes but ended up with 71% of the council seats. As a result, the Conservatives are able to stifle any opposition to their plan to move the council from Hadleigh to a rented floor in Ipswich. Their latest wheeze to stop anyone with differing political views having any say is to move to a cabinet system and cut the number of councillors that Babergh citizens are allowed to elect from 43 to 31.

At the national level, First-Past-ThePost voting ensures that South Suffolk will always be a safe Conservative seat. The outcome is so predictable that I may as well congratulate James Cartlidge now. Opinion polls show that the LibDems are on about 8%. Labour have no chance in South Suffolk. UKIP are a busted flush. If any of them come second, it will be a distant second.

The good news is that this frees you to vote for what you believe in. A tactical vote in South Suffolk is a wasted vote. But a strong vote for the Green Party will send a message that shows people want more local control. So vote for what you believe in. Vote Green.

Making Waves in the Art World

By Local Artist and Founder of Papa G Prints Alastair Becker Challenges Bring Rewards Teacher by day, artist by night, my dream of establishing myself as an artist has finally taken shape, having founded Papa G Prints earlier this year – home to a growing portfolio of unique fine art prints and originals. It has been a challenge balancing being both a father and teacher in addition to building up a collection of artwork but it has been an invigorating journey that I urge others to take.

Growth Mindset Every day, in my role as a teacher, I talk to children about going after their dreams and having a growth mindset. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. This view develops a love of learning and a resilience that is key to great achievement.

If I Can, You Can Far too often we put off chasing the things we dream of, but having now done it myself (finally) I have no regrets. So why wait for the next new year? Make your resolutions now and start achieving. As we often say in our classrooms, “Dreams don’t work unless you do!”

Why the name Papa G? Son of renowned portrait artist, Anne Becker, I set up Papa G Prints to share my collection of original artworks with the world. The name Papa G comes from my father Gerald who is lovingly called Papa by his four grandsons.

Inspiration to Create My work pays homage to my time in Asia where I taught English for over 9 years, marrying Japanese calligraphy techniques and mediums including Japanese' Sumi' inks with more traditional western mediums such as watercolours and acrylics. The artwork also takes inspiration from the subtle beauty of both the natural and man-made worlds, with artwork themes ranging from the critically endangered Black Rhino to images of the iconic Double Decker buses.

Tip for Success - Don’t be afraid of mistakes The word ‘FAIL’ is a horrible word but not if we view it as meaning ‘First Attempt In Learning’. We learn so much from the mistakes we make and this has been so true in my journey as an artist. One thing I learned from my mother is that you should never throw any of your art away. Many pieces that I once deemed failures have in the end turned out to be either personal favourites or the most popular among fans of Papa G Prints. So, if you have been sitting on an idea for some time and wish you could make something of it, trust me, go for it!

Newton Green is a hit with Society Teams An annual society day at Newton Green Golf club has helped boost interest in groups visiting the club near Sudbury. Eighty players making up 20, four-ball teams from Suffolk and Essex took part in the second annual society day run by the club. Ben Tawell, club manager, said: “We started this initiative last year and Lee Vaughan, Colin Martin, Rebecca Evans, immediately attracted Jim Smith (for Graham Horne) 18 teams. We invite all and Steve Lawrence. the societies that support us, and the day has proved a very successful format.

“We have received excellent feedback regarding the condition of our course and catering, which in turn we would hope will increase interest in even more societies visiting our club. Our bookings for this summer are already showing a marked increase. “People seem to enjoy the atmosphere of a members’ club that shows a welcoming approach to visiting groups. Our course offers an interesting challenge suitable for people who appreciate traditional, historic golf blended with attractive and challenging new holes.”

Nedging And Naughton Football Club Thanks to much hard work and research by Alan Wignall the Nedging and Naughton Football Club held their long awaited 50th year and 48th years reunion sides of winning the Lavenham Cup in 1967 and the Brent Eleigh Cup in 1969. This was held in the Nedging Village Hall on Saturday April 8th with photographs, newspaper cuttings, match reports and much memorabilia and many many memories of all those that played in 1967 and 1969. Catering was more than special and was enjoyed by all who attended thanks to Cheryl Chaplin Catering who many will know always does exceptionally well.

Alan Wignall was eventually able to contact all the players who played in both the finals and was also able to borrow the splendid trophies on the day, thanks to the Lavenham British Legion and especially Paul Garrod. All the players and their wives were all coming up to the last minute when sadly three of the team were unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances.

Most of the players did still remain fairly local, but a special mention to Dennis Wright and his wife who came up from South Wales to attend making a total of 28 on the day. It was indeed good to all meet up once again and talk and laugh about memories and times of 50 years ago. To be fair all the players may have looked older and also greyer in the hair and maybe a little heavier, but after 50 years what would you expect. However all still remarkably well and in good health and none had died, thankfully, so all in all an enjoyable and worthwhile effort.

Forty-Eight Ladies played Medal format, split into two handicap Divisions. The Salcombe Salver for the 0-20â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s was won

by Sue Latham with a nett 76, closely followed by Mandy Byham with nett 77.

The Suzetta Platt Cup for 21-36 handicappers was won by Gwen Broadhead with a handicap shattering nett 68; Teresa Close was second beating Janet Hodge on countback, both with nett 73.

The afternoon Greensomes was played over Nine Holes and the front nine winners were Karen Lewis and Katrina Bygraves with 24 points. Sue Latham continued her winning ways on the Back Nine with her partner, Sybil Paton, scoring 19 points.

Alice slices her own womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s record at Newton Green Alice Barlow has sliced her previous womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s course record at Newton Green Golf Club. Playing to retain the Earl Howe Trophy, the 18-year-old carded a three under par 68.

This was two better than her previous course record. The round put her into the last 16 for the knock-out stage of the most difficult competition to win at Newton. Off her handicap of one, Barlow recorded a net 67, one better than 19-handicapper Lizzie Johnson, and two ahead of Margaret Hills, net 69. Barlow, aged 18, is in her final year at Thomas Gainsborough School, Great Cornard, and is spending the summer playing in leading womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amateur events, including a recent appearance in the Welsh Open, when a nine in her opening round left her down the field.

To date, her best finish has been fifth. Her run of success last year means she is a qualifier for the England Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Amateur Open in July.
