Big Day for Hadleigh RBL Hadleigh RBL will mark this year’s Armed Forces Day by holding an open day on Saturday 25 June from 10:00 to 16:00. A section of George Street will be closed off for a street fair with stalls, BBQ, refreshments, exhibitions, activities and entertainment and there will be a table top sale indoors. The highlight of the day will be the grand opening of the Legion’s new ‘Drop-in Centre’, which will take place at 13:00.

The new Drop-in Centre will be open monthly and will provide an easily accessible facility for service personnel, veterans and their families to drop in for an informal chat and a brew. Manned by trained volunteers the drop in centre will also be able to offer help and advice on welfare matters. There is a large service and ex-service community here in the area and it is hoped that this new drop-in centre will become a focal point.

The recently refurbished drop-in centre lounge will also be renamed in honour of local girl, Staff Sergeant Sharron Elliott who was killed while on active service in Iraq in 2006. Please come along and show your support.

Local cyclists have already begun to sign up for the Gayford Flyer, Hadleigh’s own sportive on September 18th. Last year’s event attracted over 200 adult cyclists and the town’s cycling club is looking to reach 300.

The sportive is named “The Gayford Flyer” in recognition of the town’s world record breaking aviator, Oswald Gayford. The 60 and 32 mile routes will take riders past landmarks including Gayford family home on Angel Street, RAF Wattisham where he served as commander and his final resting place in Naughton.

Richard Holdaway, Sportive Director said, “We had a tremendous push to encourage early sign ups on Oswald Gayford’s birthday and it was pleasing to get the support of the Town Council, Radio Suffolk and local businesses.” Cyclists can sign up via www.britishcycling.org.uk from 18th May, Oswald Gayford’s birthday.

The sportive is supported by The Pedal House, The George Public House, Sunny Day Cycleworks and Crockatt Garage. Lucy Jay and Simon King from the HCC Committee handed over a Club jersey to Pedal House in recognition of the shop’s support for the event. Adam Chamberlin, Chair of the Club said, “We’ve been pleased with the take up for the Get Back on Your Bike sessions which have been running on Tuesday evenings. We’re very keen to attract more women cyclists to the Club.”

The Unhappy Medium

by Pat Whymark, Julian Harries & Pat Marlowe Common Ground present an “entrancing” new comedy. Set in the 1920s, The Unhappy Medium tells the story of Montague Faulke, a “spiritualist” and some-time music hall entertainer (played by Julian Harries), as he struggles with his conscience, his creditors and his put-upon assistant Aubrey Miles (Patrick Marlowe who last performed with Common Ground in The Signalman).

Matters come to a head when Faulke comes under the scrutiny of psychic investigator Morton McLean, played by Dick Mainwaring – his last appearance with the company was in Stuff In The Attic. Both he and Pat Marlowe have appeared in Eastern Angles' Christmas shows. Expect oodles of ectoplasm, lashings of levitation and a bump or two in the night.

Common Ground Theatre Co was set up in 2007 by Pat Whymark and Julian Harries to create new music theatre. We have been touring steadily since then, mainly within East Anglia, producing seventeen new plays which have been received stunning reviews both here and in London. We have received funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, The Suffolk Foundation, The Seckford Foundation, Suffolk Youth Ops, The Brook Trust and Suffolk Single Gateway.

We are delighted to say that the Living with Dying event on Saturday May 14th in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh was a great success. We had lots of people attend in the church and there were a lot of really positive comments about how informative the whole day had been. Our aim was to help everyone with two difficult subjects, End of Life Care and Death. Including the businesses and charities that took part to members of the general public who came, I think we managed to achieve In times of need...

Ask us that aim. The 5 Masterclasses in the Guildhall were also very well received by those who attended. Our Memory Tree in St Mary’s looks beautiful with all the coloured cards and written notes as people remembered their loved ones. It will be in church for a while longer if you want to go and have a look or add your memory.

Thanks go to the wonderful people who made a cake for the refreshments. As a result we were able to serve copious amounts of cake and tea, and the proceeds from donations for those are all going to be shared between Sue Ryder and St Elizabeth Hospice. We are pleased to say we have been able to send each one £95.

We would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who helped to make the day possible. Our Sponsors (Aldham Common Charity, Hadleigh Town Council and The Thrift Shop), Joan and all the groups who produced such beautiful flower displays for us all to enjoy, to those who helped on the Saturday and all those willing people who took it in turns to sit in St Mary’s for the duration of the exhibitions to welcome visitors. Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers Finally, a dry day for our May walk to Boxford and 17 of us walked the 10 miles from Hadleigh via Wicker Street Green and Edwardstone. It was a very pleasant walk that included a stop at the Edwardstone White Horse for a pint and coffee in Boxford whilst waiting for the bus back to Hadleigh. A highlight was a herd of horses joining us for the cross field walk into Edwardstone. We were pleased to welcome the newcomers who joined us.

Our next walk looks to be equally enjoyable and will be on Saturday 11th June.

We will meet at 0930 at the small car park by the playing fields in Stoke by Nayland and follow a clockwise route back to the start taking in Polstead, Mark Wood, Scotland Hall, Thorington Street, Wick Farm, Tendring Hall Farm and Poplar Farm. The walk is about 9 miles although there are a couple of break points where those not wishing to complete the entire walk can take a shorter route (5 miles) by road back to Stoke. We will put a map on the web site showing where the car park is located. If anyone is in need of a lift to Stoke

by Nayland or is prepared to offer someone a ride in their car, please contact us through the web site and we will try and match people up.

Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site.

The 177th Hadleigh Show Saturday 21st May 2016 Despite a variable forecast the weather stayed dry and the crowds came out in force once again to visit our popular local Show.

The highlight of the Show for many were the fantastic displays in the Grand Ring by the Royal Signals White Helmets Display Team.

With 24 bikes and riders they entertained the crowds with amazing bike control including the iconic pyramid and breath-taking fire jump. The ground was hard and uneven causing a few wobbles, but the crowd, who were 9 deep in places, enjoyed the spectacle.

New to this year was the Cookery Demonstration area, where mouth-watering food was prepared and cooked by local chefs, led by Malcolm Long of the Barn at Assington. Great entertainment, and some people even got to sample the final produce.

The Education area also proved popular with the Sheep Show, art work from local schools in the Education Tent and the conservation garden with Suffolk Wildlife Trust and Suffolk Beekeepers.

The highlight of the Show for this year’s Director, James Harris, was the farm machinery demonstration which showcased the last 100 years of farm mechanisation and saw four generations of this family in the ring together.

Numerous local trade stands were showcasing their businesses and the Food Hall and catering courts were busy all day with many local producers to tempt the taste buds.

The Flower Show and Rural Craft Marquees were, as usual, filled with a spectacle of colour and talented craftsmen, and the Art Tent sold a record number of painting for local artists.

The Hadleigh Farmers’ Agricultural Association would like to thank everyone who has supported or visited the show this year. So whether you have been attending this event for years or came for the first time, we hope to see you again next year on 20th May 2017.

Many Happy Returns of the Day to my mother, Brenda, as she has just celebrated her 90th Birthday. There has been great excitement as we had a party at The Orwell Hotel in Felixstowe with a lunch for 32 guests. There was much scurrying as the preparations were laid. It was like Grieg’s “Wedding at Troldhaugen”, a piece written to celebrate his 25th Wedding Anniversary. My mother had her hair prepared especially, nails, facial and so on. The dress wasn’t as it should be, the nails had to be re-done, guests came to stay and we were able to secure the services of a Dame to entertain us. There were Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen. Frank was busy as he oversaw a cavalcade of four limousines brought round from the motor house and which sped to Felixstowe. The lunch party was a wonderful occasion which my mother really enjoyed and was so pleased to have her friends around her; she even delivered a speech. We also enjoyed a lunch at Hintlesham Hall which was done very well, however, I do wish that the hotel would improve its front of house demeanour; even the new manager wandered by without speaking.

As we were making our way to Hintlesham Hall, Frank was collecting a guest from Kersey when the children from Kersey School in their red uniforms crossed the road in front of us. All was well until they thought that my mother was the Queen where upon there was a great hue and cry!

The face of the teacher did not reflect the joy of the children. We all love waving at the slightest opportunity.

And that is what we did when motoring from Christchurch Mansion to Felixstowe for the Ipswich Transport Museum Classic Car Run. There are well wishers along the whole route, on every round about and in the laybys. It was a great day. One Friday evening, Frank arrived with Number 1 car for a journey to Norwich Cathedral to see Aled Jones in Concert. It was an entertaining evening but a pity that so much of the music was on backing tapes rather than live.

This is a busy time of year for Frank as he tends the kitchen garden. His buds have been rather delicate and have had a tendency to wilt. Maria sprays them with iced water, they wince and all appears to be well again.

700 at Capel’s Beacon The lighting of Capel St Mary’s Queen’s 90th Birthday Beacon was applauded by 700 residents, a quarter of the village’s population. The Beacon was lit by South Suffolk MP, James Cartlidge, at the same time as hundreds of others around the United Kingdom, precisely 8.30pm on Thursday, 21 April.

The night’s celebration started at 8pm with refreshments in the Methodist church and a display of children’s work celebrating The Queen’s birthday. The bells of St Mary’s parish church rang out at 8.15pm and Scouts and Cubs marched to the Beacon.

Their parade was followed by the singing of the National Anthem, led by members of Orchard Players.

Group Captain Gary Bunkell CBE, a serving officer who lives in Capel, read a message from Prince Charles. Methodist MInister, the Rev Andrew Sankey, paid tribute to Her Majesty and led a prayer for Her. Capel Parish Council Chairman, Les Bryant, welcomed Mr Cartlidge and all those present. When the Beacon was lit everybody sang Happy Birthday Your Majesty, Happy Birthday to you. Mr Cartlidge joined the dozens of residents who signed the Birthday Book which will be sent to The Queen after Her official birthday weekend, 11-12 June. The leather-bound, embossed birthday book was displayed with photographs of The Queen in Suffolk from the EADT archives.

There was also a photographic display of the life of The Queen from birth until now. The Birthday Book will be at Capel’s June Fun Day in an exhibition with photographic displays of The Queen, portraits of The Queen by members of the Art Club, royal-themed drawings and colouring-ins by Capel’s primary school children and other exhibits.

The village’s churches, groups and clubs have held special royal-themed events since late May and will continue until mid-July. The last event, in the village hall on 15 July, will be the draw for a 90-prize Queen’s 90th birthday raffle with a £90 first prize and the announcement of the £90 winner of a 90question quiz on The Queen life.

I imagine the recipient felt totally sick too; they believed they had a great friendship, and ended up deeply hurt. To see what was really thought of them was awful and a friendship was shattered.

I wonder, what do you think God thinks about you? Do you think He is totally disinterested in you? Do you think He is a genial old man in the sky who will weigh your good and bad deeds to see which is greater ? Or donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t you care?

God does have an opinion about us. He hates the wrong stuff we do (sin) and He says clearly He is angry about it. God also says He canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t overlook it, either, but the Bible makes clear, God loves us at the same time, â&#x20AC;&#x153;while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.â&#x20AC;?(Romans 5.8) Jesus was willing to die on a Cross for us so we can receive forgiveness and everlasting life. Incredibly, anyone who accepts Jesus paid in full for our sins, and trusts God for forgiveness, is seen by Him as His own special and greatly loved child. In the end, it is only Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opinion of us that will count.

"Yes it's going well - really well" laughs Cathy Bullen who, together with her husband Peter, runs Bildeston's ever expanding Boule-in French empire. "In fact it seem to be going, going, gone!

Our biggest challenge recently seems to be keeping up with the demand for new stock. We had this lovely plan that we could rotate pieces between our Suffolk fairs and our London shop but demand this Spring has been unbelievable!

Luckily, we've had great success in sourcing some fantastic new stock for our Fete de Monet Fair (Saturday 18th to Sunday 27th June) having been in Provence over the Pentecost weekend which is a highlight in the French Brocante calendar. It's a magical time in Provence with everything burgeoning - irises, olive trees and the markets, so it hasn't been a question of what to buy but rather how to fit it all in the lorry!"

Certainly a glimpse of what's in store for visitors at the forthcoming Fete de Monet Fair is a delight. "Monet himself was a great artist" Cathy points out "not just in his paintings but he was a creative artist in his home - famous for his garden at Giverny, he also loved 'al fresco' entertaining being a keen cook himself."

The Tempest from Sudbury to Spain!

Sudbury Dramatic Society, based at The Quay Theatre is delighted to announce their summer 2016 production of The Tempest, celebrating the 400th birthday of William Shakespeare, which is on at The Quay from Tuesday 5th to Saturday 9th July at 7.45pm Following the performances at The Quay the whole production goes on tour with a Garden Performance at Magpies, Little Maplestead on 16th and 17th July at 2pm and then SDS will be taking it to a small community theatre in Spain at Laroles, in Las Alpujarras on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada at the end of July.

The Tempest is one of Shakespeare’s shortest plays - about magic, monsters and the marooned, shipwrecks and shape-shifting.

An ensemble of 9 actors playing several parts and live musicians will bring this mystical play to life, using silks from local suppliers in Sudbury to weave the magic and symbolise the different characters. Although the sources are unclear, The Tempest has been linked to Spanish and Spanish-Caribbean origins, strengthening the links between the community-based theatrical spaces in Sudbury and the theatre in Spain. Theatrical, musical and visual devices are all being combined in this production to make the play accessible and to communicate with all audiences, creating a Tempest for everyone to enjoy.

Member of Parliament for South Suffolk The first Sunday of May marked one year since I was elected as the MP for South Suffolk, and what a year it has been! It has been a great privilege to serve the constituency both here in our beautiful corner of the country, and as a Conservative MP in Westminster.

Governing with a small majority comes with some significant challenges but also provides opportunities for backbench MPs to influence policy. I recently spoke out against a Government policy publicly for the first time as I truly felt that the proposal for enforced academisation of schools was a step too far.

Having visited both primary and secondary academies in South Suffolk, I have seen how effective the academy model can be for those schools that have already chosen to make the transition. In particular, academisation has presented a powerful tool for implementing change where a school is struggling, bringing new leadership and ensuring that poor standards will be challenged.

Nevertheless, I had considerable reservations about forcing all schools into becoming academies, particularly those that are already achieving a good or outstanding OFSTED rating. We are extremely fortunate that 80% of Suffolk’s schools are already rated as good or outstanding, including a large number of primaries. When we debated the academisation proposals in the House of Commons I referred to the case of primary schools such as Lawshall which are outstanding but not academies, and explained that what I fundamentally struggled with was the idea that I should go to a school like that and say, "Although your school is outstanding, and all your staff are working brilliantly and delivering a fantastic education, we are now going to force you to become an academy."

Fortunately, my colleague, Secretary of State for Education Nicky Morgan MP, may have come in for some criticism but the great thing is that she took the time to meet with me and likeminded Parliamentarians on several occasions to listen to our concerns. As a result, the Government withdrew proposals for enforced academisation but the commitment to higher standards remains.

A Midsummer Dream for Dominic With all the recent programmes on television and radio it won’t have escaped anyone’s notice that 2016 commemorates 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare. Here in Hadleigh a pupil from Hadleigh Community Primary School is playing his part in marking the event and helping to put his town and school on the map!

In March 200 children from Suffolk auditioned for a part in Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ which will be directed at the New Wolsey Theatre in June and July by the world famous Sir Trevor Nunn. Twenty children were chosen- and Dominic from Hadleigh was one of them. The opportunity is a fantastic one and will be a significant commitment with no less than 14 performances. As a very young boy Dominic was probably one of the last children to elect to ‘perform’ or speak publicly and his turnaround and success is a huge testimony to the support, and encouragement Dominic has received throughout his years at Hadleigh Community Primary.

The Hadleigh school –(which recently took its 90 strong choir to perform at Snape Maltings), is renowned locally for its strength in Music and Sport and the extracurricular opportunities that include Drama, Dance, Wildlife Explorer Clubs and School Camp.

Dominic would like to take this opportunity to thank his school and Miss Lesley’s SPA for their support. And we wish you every success Dominic.......but please, please, DON’T break a leg!

To unclog showers heads it is advisable to soak the head in boiling water and vinegar. Using a small squeegee on wall tiles after each shower will help you to avoid water spots forming on their surface.

The best piece of advice we can offer when cleaning your bathroom is to ensure you do it on a regular basis to avoid a build-up of mildew and soap scum. Taking the regular cleaning approach will mean you are simply maintaining a high standard, which will be less time consuming in the long run.

Sudbury Symphony Orchestra Commemoration Concert 26th June Sudbury Symphony Orchestra’s next concert on 26th June at 6pm at St Peters Church, Market Hill, Sudbury celebrates the life of Hedi Morgan who died in September 2015 at the age of 100. Hedy was the mother of the orchestra’s past Principal Flautist, Nigel Morgan and a very accomplished pianist whose professional career was cut short by Nazi persecution and the war. To commemorate her life and musical talents, Nigel asked the orchestra if they would play music that Hedy herself had played.

Hedy (Hedwig) was born in Germany in 1915 and had been booked to give her first large-scale public recital as a pianist, playing Chopin’s 1st Piano Concerto at a concert hall in Stuttgart. Her father though came from a Jewish background and such a public concert was too dangerous in 1930s Germany. By 1936, the family had decided it would be safer for her to leave the country and at 20 years old, Hedy began a new life in England, becoming a teacher and later marrying Nigel’s father in 1939. Hedy loved England, she gave many piano recitals throughout her life including to servicemen during the war and usually for charity. But Hedy Morgan never performed her dreamed-of piano concerto.

Nigel wanted a musical tribute to his mother and what better way than having the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra play the Chopin Piano concerto that his mother missed out on all those years ago? Our soloist on the 26th will be Jill Morton, a firm favourite with the orchestra’s audience. The concert will also include orchestral music by Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Ippolitow-Iwanow, all pieces drawn from Hedy’s wartime and pre-war concerts.

Roots to the 92 Have you ever thought about writing a book? I suspect many have, it’s a common enough ‘bucket list’ goal, but finding inspiration to get started and then keeping the momentum going can be tricky. It is something I have wrestled with for some time, but in the end I used one goal to achieve another.

Not everyone’s cup of tea, but I wanted to visit all current 92 football league grounds. Last Autumn I’d notched up 84 of them, but after 44 years of footie watching getting to the 92 had become a bit of an ongoing sore with no end in sight. Things then fell in to place – with my eldest son Jim moving back home to Hadleigh I now had my match-day mate back, we shelled out a plan to see the remaining eight, and set 2 April 2016 as the end date when my team (Southend) were due to play at Blackpool.

It was then I decided to kill two birds with one stone and put pen to paper on it all. I set myself the target of writing up one ground visit a day, which by and large I stuck to. Deciding how to cover it all was key – I considered that even the most die-hard fan would not be remotely interested in reading about how many corners their team had in a match in 1982 (even if I could remember or look it up). So I decided to steer clear of giving match reports, and instead tell a tale of experiences and what it was like to be there. ‘Style’ was the next decision and I opted for what I hope comes across as a ‘dry humour’ approach, I wanted it to entertain as well as be a memory-jerker. Having a unique name is key too – Southend play at Roots Hall so I built that in to the title.

Coming towards the end of the writing I still needed to find something extra to round things off – this came by setting up a meeting in Blackpool with an exinternational who I had helped chair off the pitch at a promotion party back in 1981. The bonus was that he then kindly agreed to write a Foreword for the book. The easiest part in the whole process has been the publishing – there are online tools which make this simple including cover design, and the cost need not be prohibitive (I did it for less than £100). The publisher even sets up the ‘buy’ links with Amazon for you.

Just publishing might be enough for some but I’m looking to have some fun playing at marketing it, mostly online via fan websites. I’m also fortunate in that Jim is a web designer and so together we have crafted a site where people can learn more about the book, see a picture video and buy if they wish. Milden Singers 70’s & 80’s Concert Another successful and enjoyable concert from The 70’s and 80’s by The Milden Singers which raised in total £1156 for Milden Pavilion Fund. A donation of £330 from the raffle is being sent to The Shelly Centre for Therapeutic Riding. Since starting the shows The Milden Singers Concerts have raised over £14,000 for Milden Pavilion with donations to local and national charities too. Hadleigh is where we belong with its curving High Street, its wool history, its wonderful architecture, its warmth and welcome. Nothing will persuade us to leave here. By the way our 3 children chose to live in or around Hadleigh, and we now have 5 grandchildren! Maybe that helped our decision!

Gordon Clarke 1920-2000 Many people contacted us after this photo of Gordon pictured at the counter of the ‘Coffee Tavern’ appeared in last months Village Edition. For everyones further information, the following article appeared on the front page of Hadleigh Community News in April 2000.

The end of an era?

The sudden death of Mr Gordon Clarke in February has resulted, unfortunately, in the closure of the ‘Coffee Tavern’, which was renowned far and wide as a specialist confectionery shop, where sweets of all kinds, shapes, sizes, colours and flavours could be purchased, and many of them still served in the time-honoured way, i.e. in white paper bags and not in sealed prepacked plastic containers as found in most shops these days. Many will remember Gordon as a quiet, unassuming and patient man whose aim was always to try and meet the individual requirements of all his customers.

Each customer would receive his undivided attention, irrespective of whether they were purchasing £10 or 10 pence worth of sweets, and he was equally happy serving children and young people as he was serving his elder clientele.

When World War II broke out in 1939 Gordon, like many other young men in Hadleigh, was conscripted for military service and served with distinction in the Royal Corps of Signals, attaining the rank of WOII and saw action in Europe in 1944 with the 21st Army. On his return to Hadleigh after the war, he gave up his career in accountancy to assist his Auntie Maggie Goss (proprietor of the Coffee Tavern), eventually taking over when his auntie’s deteriorating health prevented her from serving in the shop.

He took a keen interest in the affairs of the town, and served as a councillor on the old Hadleigh Urban District Council prior to the formation of the larger Babergh District Council. He was also one of the founder members of the Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce and served on its committee. It seems unlikely that we shall see another shop like the Coffee Tavern, another shopkeeper like Gordon Clarke, in Hadleigh in the future, hence the title at the heading of this article – The End of an Era?

At Christmas last year Jane had no choice and was not in a position to renew her lease in May at Friars Street. This was a huge decision and not taken lightly. I feel I had reached my potential here and so many people do not come to Friars Street to shop or browse and since the fire in September I feel I was not in a strong position to continue by just ticking over any more. My loyal regulars just weren’t enough to make it viable to stay. But because Jane feels there is so much more potential if she was more centrally placed she continued to keep looking for a suitable property. Customers need speciality products that you simply cannot buy anywhere else and I am always happy to source and order such items in for people.

Most of the larger premises in North Street being suitably placed become too expensive along with crippling business rates so Jane was unable to give her customers the commitment of a new location she felt the shop much needed.

All of the regulars will know that things were desperate with the last day of trade being last Saturday and still nowhere to go! Stock was run right down and customers were led to believe that the shop was in fact closing.

I just kept saying to customers “watch this space” because I couldn’t believe that this was the end and I felt hopeful and remained positive that something would come up, I just didn’t know what!

A week before closing an opportunity came up for a little shop in North Street which Jane felt was the perfect location to move her business too.

75 North Street is the new address for Health Foods For You, next door to Sudbury Shoe Repairs. Past Juniper Flowers and Rafi’s Spice Box. Jane acted quickly to secure the shop and as of next week is preparing the business for this amazing and exciting opportunity. I’ve always believed in fate but this was getting bit close even for me!

Melford’s Famous Old House Gallery are currently showcasing an exhibition of paintings by renowned artist Clive Madgwick

In 1965 Clive left the RAF and joined a dental practice in Friar’s Street Sudbury. It was whilst working here that he got struck down with a serious bout of glandular fever and to keep him occupied while he recovered he began sketching and painting local houses. Madgwick’s works began attracting attention and as his reputation grew so did demand for his work.

He exhibited in numerous galleries in East Anglia and also became a member of the Society of Equestrian Artists, the United Society of Artists and the Royal Society of British Artists.

His paintings can be found in many collections including the private collection of Her Majesty The Queen. Babergh District Council’s new Chairman has unveiled the charities he will be supporting during his role Councillor Peter Burgoyne was elected as chairman at a full council meeting at the end of April. Cllr Burgoyne, who represents the Pinewood ward, has been a district councillor for five years. He spent the last year as Babergh’s Vice Chairman. The Chairman’s first charity is Age UK Suffolk Chilton Club - a specialist Day Club for those affected with dementia. “I am passionate about both of the charities I am supporting this year,” Cllr Burgoyne explained. “Several close relatives have been affected by dementia so I have firsthand experience of how devastating this can be for those affected and their families.

“The Chilton Club provides a wonderful, safe, environment for all and offers some muchneeded respite for families.”

Jilly Vince, Chilton Club Manager, said: “We at Suffolk Age UK: The Chilton Club are delighted to have been chosen by Cllr Burgoyne as one of his charities of the year. Our club in Sudbury offers people with memory problems the chance to meet others, make new friends, enjoy a freshly-cooked meal and participate in fun and stimulating activities. Staff at Chilton fundraise throughout the year for all the little things that make a day so special for our members and the support and recognition of Cllr Burgoyne and Babergh Council means a great deal to us all.”

The second charity supported by Cllr Burgoyne this year is the Sudbury Gateway Club - a social and leisure club for adults with learning disabilities, which facilitates a number of activities in a safe and fun environment. He added: “In the face of ever-decreasing government grants, anything that I can do to aid the club’s fundraising and raise awareness of what they do and provide is a good thing. “All too often these charities provide a fundamental service within our communities and go largely unnoticed. We would all be the worse off if they weren’t there. “I hope to raise as much money as possible for both charities and look forward to working with them over my time as Chairman.”

Cllr Burgoyne said he ready for his new role and is aiming to meet as many of the communities in Babergh as possible. He added: “Not only am I delighted to have been elected as Chairman but I am thoroughly relishing the thought of getting out there and meeting the many, many people that make up our wonderful and diverse communities in Babergh.

“We as councillors represent all of those people and I feel we should be out there engaging with people and showing them who we are and what we stand for.”

As I write this we are in the middle of Foster Care Fortnight 2016. At any one time Suffolk County Council has around 750 children in care who need people to provide them with a safe and stable home.

Anyone can apply to be a foster carer whether they are single or married, own their own home or not. All they need is to be able to offer space in their home and time in their lives for a child. Teenage children are particularly in need of foster carers to support them through difficult years.

I am not sure whether being a foster parent should be regarded as a ‘career’, but it is certainly a worthwhile supported occupation through which people give something back to the community. All foster carers receive financial allowances to look after the children in their care as well as payment for the time spent carrying out their role as a foster carer. It is a good way to allow people to work at home, and could even provide a new way ahead for someone looking to change direction.

Were you to become a foster carer you would be participating in a Suffolk success story. The fact is that Suffolk is good at looking after children in need.

In February the authority’s Children’s Services were rated as Good by OFSTED, only one of 17 out of 83 authorities to be so judged.

The inspector praised our social workers for their work in keeping children in care safe. They were commended for knowing children well and understanding their needs. Children and their families were considered to receive a timely and comprehensive early help service. In particular, OFSTED recognised the good support given to children that need foster carers or who are seeking adoption. Albireo Summer is upon us and for astronomers it is a bit of a Marmite situation; you either love it or you hate it. The hours of darkness are few and when the Moon is in the sky for two weeks, the observable month seems way too short. But some gems are to be beheld and this month if you have large binoculars or a small telescope you can see the best double star in the entire sky.

To see Albireo you will need binoculars no lower than 15x70 and a telescope of at least 3 inches aperture. Anything less will just resolve this double star as a single star which will be no use for this exercise.

Where To Find It: Albireo is located in the constellation of Cygnus the swan which in June skies is rising perfectly as darkness falls. The map here will help you to locate it very easily, the star we are looking for is also a stunning golden yellow of magnitude 3.

What We Are Looking At: The primary star is classed as a K311 bright giant. These stars are much cooler than our Sun's 6,000 degree c surface temperature, coming in at some 4,100 degrees c. The star is around 20 times the size of the Sun and around 100 times more luminous.

Another star actually orbits Albireo, but cannot be seen unless you have a very large telescope. This other star orbits at a distance of 46 Astronomical Units (1 A.U. is 93,000,000 miles). This star system lies at a distance of 386 light years away, so the light reaching our eyes left the system in around 1630.

The blue star in the picture is classed as a B8Ve main sequence star and has a much hotter surface temperature of 12,000 degrees c, with a diameter of 3 times that of our Sun and 175 times more luminous. These stars are actually gravitationally bound together in space, and the blue star orbits the yellow primary in a period equalling 7,270 years. The colours are truly outstanding to see, and some observers see the colours blend to a greenish tinge.

Prince’s death emphasises the importance of making a Will When singer-songwriter Prince died last month, he left a musical legacy that will never be forgotten. But it is believed there was something the 57-year-old didn’t leave behind that could cause his family more pain as they come to terms with their loss – a Will. Prince’s apparent failure to make his final wishes clear has created the very-real potential for a messy legal battle over his multimillion dollar fortune – one that could rumble on for years.

The lessons from the tragedy are clear: everyone should have a Will – and it is never too early to make one. By doing so, you are ensuring (as best as you can) that your money, home and possessions are divided between your loved ones as you want. But the benefits go beyond pounds, pence, bricks and mortar.

By making a Will, you can: · set out your funeral wishes.. · appoint guardians for your children. Without a Will, the authorities may take on that responsibility, meaning you could have no formal say over who looks after them. · decide at what age your offspring receive their share of your estate by creating a trust fund for their inheritance – particularly useful when planning long-term financial provision for disabled children. Whatfield School loves adventure, and we are pleased to say that Key Stage 2 pupils have enjoyed two exciting exploits away from home! The younger pupils went to Thorpe Woodlands with Bildeston Primary School, and had a fantastic time being challenged with all the adventurous activities that were available. Pupils stayed in the purpose built log cabin, and enjoyed kayaking, climbing, archery and caving as part of their three day experience. We know this visit developed their self-confidence and was wonderful for forging friendships across the schools.

As I write, we are away with the older pupils at Africa adventure. This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to empathise with villagers in Africa, and they perform a huge range of tasks to try to assist the villagers who would like to move back to their village. Pupils enjoy team-building games, climbing, low ropes, archery, clearing a minefield and organising ways to get fresh water to the village. At Whatfield we believe this residential experience is invaluable in developing the children’s ability to understand the lives of others, and is also a fantastic teambuilding experience. Again, we are away with Bildeston Primary School, and strong friendships have grown during the week, which will be a great help when pupils move on to their High School.

Whatfield School were pleased to celebrate a fantastic win at the regional heat of gymnastics. Pupils prepared routines and were excited to visit Piper Vale gym in Ipswich to perform in front of the other schools, parents and the judges.

The scores were very close, but Whatfield got through to the Suffolk Finals in Bury St Edmunds in June, and are looking forward to the challenge of competing against the best school gymnasts in Suffolk!

Back at school we were excited to see our duck eggs hatch, and the baby ducklings move off with their mother duck to enjoy the pond and wildlife area in our lovely school grounds. No sooner had she left than we were amazed to find that another mallard duck had decided to choose the Early Years Area to lay her clutch of eggs!

Pupils in class 1 decided it was important to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday on her real birthday as well as her official one. A cake was made, cards were sent and party was enjoyed by all.

Whatfield has continued to concentrate on their fitness levels by running the golden mile, and so far pupils have reached Portugal on their journey to Rio for the start of the Olympics.

We have really enjoyed rehearsing this programme – especially the ‘Danse Macabre’ (great fun for the 2nd. violins).

As is our custom, we do not charge for entry, but we do ask you to make a contribution as you leave towards the costs of the concert and to enable us to give a good donation to the church so kindly hosting us. We are privileged to play in this beautiful historic church with its great acoustic. We estimate that the concert will last about an hour or so.

Suffolk Open Studios unveils line up for Summer 2016

Around 130 artists have signed up for the month-long event in June, inviting members of the public to view them at work and browse exhibitions. To share what we do and talk about what we love is what Suffolk Open Studios is about.”

Suffolk Open Studios has been running since 1993 and has grown from a group of around 15 local artists. At this point it now boasts 129 full members, 12 associate members and 5 art galleries. More and more artists are collaborating these days to create a great experience for visitors, with artist R IN A RY P R A trails incorporating several studios, often with refreshments provided by the artists. Bridget Palmer reminds us that artists will have artwork to sell in their studios or hubs, though there is never any pressure on anyone to buy. If visitors choose to do so, it’s a great opportunity to buy interesting, affordable artwork, direct from the artist who made it. Parachute Party in aid of hospice Adrenaline junkies are invited to join the Parachute Party this July in aid of St Elizabeth Hospice. The local charity is looking for groups of people to join them and dozens of other supporters to skydive on Saturday 16 July at Beccles Airfield. The hospice is hoping to have a record number of people in St Elizabeth Hospice history jumping - all in one day!

Joanne Rodger, St Elizabeth Hospice’s events and challenges fundraiser, said: “This year we are holding our first Parachute Party and we are looking for groups of friends, colleagues and families to enjoy the exhilarating experience of jumping out of a plane 10,000ft above ground – on the same day.”

Where possible, groups will be able to go up in the plane together, and skydive one after the other. Each skydiver is asked to pay a £50 deposit and to raise a minimum of £300 for the hospice. Miss Rodger added: “We are hoping to have a record number of people in the hospice’s history jumping on the same day, all in aid of the hospice. “All the money raised from the skydives will go towards improving life for people living with a progressive illness such as cancer, motor neurone disease and heart failure in East Suffolk. “We already have 15 signed up, but if we have 50 people skydiving, we can raise thousands of pounds which would help make a huge difference to our patients and their families.”

Unheard of! Mum and Dad out for the evening in best bib and tucker. I couldn't believe it until Buttons reminded me about the Babergh District Council Community Achievement Awards. Within minutes of their return Mum swopped her framed certificate for a mop in one hand and a four week old kitten's feed bottle in the other. A typical example of life's ups and down in animal rescue, now I understand why Mum calls it SESAW! Here's a sad story with a happy ending. Little and large dogs, Prince and Duke were blissfully happy with a little girl and her family then illness struck. The humans had to give up their beloved pets. Fortunately they came to SESAW. After waiting eight long months the inseparable friends finally got a fantastic home with another adoring family. Judging by the attached photo, they certainly look comfortable!

June is a quiet month on the fundraising side as everyone is concentration on getting the Sanctuary ready for our annual Open Day at the end of July. A chap has to be careful where he walks with all the sweeping, shovelling and mowing going on. I think I'll stay out of the way in the kitchen and wait for someone to make a cuppa for me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

Six of our riders came for an “Own a Pony” day last month. They were really lucky with the weather and had a wonderful time. They had to put down the beds in the stables; have a snack; fetch in the ponies and groom them; have lunch outside in the yard, do a quiz, hack out or practise dressage in the arena; have another snack, remount to play musical sacks in the arena, turn the ponies out and then have tea and prizes. Notice what they missed? Apart from washing the bits after riding, nobody had time to clean tack! Ha ha, you got away with it this time, kids, but I saw you.

During the month of May we have seen many visitors. “Drive it day” was a huge success with thousands of visitors. We were very privileged to have had some of the world’s most beautiful vintage vehicles on display.

We thank each of you who supported the event by way of either attending, exhibiting, marshalling or helping in some way, we would especially like to thank many local businesses that donated raffle prizes. Without this support the event would not have been possible. We are already planning next year’s Drive It Day. It was lovely to have BBC radio Suffolk broadcasting live from the Mill too.. We officially opened the upper floors of the Mill for the first time for the public to see the latest stages of the restoration. So all in all it was very much a special day.

We had National Mills open weekend at the end of May and it was nice to see a good number of local visitors but was also pleasing to see some from the other side of the country. We welcomed Spratt’s Mystery Tour group during last week who all enjoyed their visit.

For those interested in the local wild life, for the fourth year running the pair of kestrels again have taken up residence at the mill.. There are currently 5 eggs being nurtured, We have a video link through to the Suffolk Craft Shop / Glass & Craft where their activities can be seen. Kestrels are adaptable in their use of nest sites, but do not build their own nests. They often use ledges on buildings high up. We have a box perched under the locum and they have used this site year after year. It is anticipated the eggs will hatch some time during early June.

The chicks fledge gradually when they are around four weeks old. They explore increasing distances from the nest, but return to it to roost for another couple of weeks. Adults continue to feed the young for a month after fledging, during which time they will learn to catch their own food.

The usual pair of swans are nesting and we look forward to the cygnets appearing during June, if they stick to their normal routine they will stay at the Mill for a week or so before heading to Toppersfield Bridge Hadleigh. We have another pair of swans that have been enjoying the northern stretch of river, we know the female is 2 years old, from Mistley she moved to Dovercourt before pairing up and coming here to Kersey Works to the frame continue, we are now able to give relatively safe access to the upper floors with the exception of the top floor. This being where works are continuing with repairing the main structural timbers, floor joists and roof valley.

News from Kersey School Owls (Yr5/6) In Owls class this Summer term we have been finishing of our topic of Leisure and Entertainment by making our own Ferris Wheels! We have used a saw, hot glue gun and created our own pods to be attached to the wheel. We are now preparing for our great week away to African Adventure by learning all about Africa. We have focused on the country of Kenya. So far we have made African masks and also created a travel agency poster to entice people to come to Kenya. We are excited to announce our summer play will be...Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, more details to follow!

Hedgehogs (Yr1/2) Hedgehogs have had a fantastic trip to Hollow Trees Farm. We spent the morning learning about bees, planting our own flowers for the bees and learning a bees dance. We then had a tractor ride into the farmers fields and learned about the different crops, before returning to the farm and visiting the animals. We finished our day off with some well earned free time in the woodland play area.

Squirrels (YrR) The children in Squirrel Class have been learning all about growing. We have been busy planting lettuce, cress, beans, sunflowers and other colourful flowers. The children have been watering the plants regularly to ensure that they grow. As part of our topic, we went on a trip to Hollow Trees Farm where we enjoyed learning about bees and how they communicate, looked at the different crops that grow at Hollow Tress and went on a tractor ride. It was lots of fun!

Alongside the shows, from 12 - 5 pm, the FOBS team will be running the usual summer fair staples such as: a BBQ, Bar, stalls, & our ever popular raffle. We hope that the fun of the circus and the other activities will not only attract families of the school, but the greater community. All are welcome! A Sports club has been reunited with a valuable silver tankard it presented as a wedding gift to one of its legendary figures more than a century ago. William Allen Hart, who was part of Sudbury Cricket Club during a golden era at the end of the 19th century, received the inscribed pint mug from his team mates as a wedding gift in 1899.

It was at a time when “Slogger” Hart’s playing days were reaching an end, and as a widower was marrying for the second time at the age of 46.

The hard hitting tonker, who farmed at Edwardstone, was part of the club committee that saw it develop its present ground in 1892. His matches for the club included fixtures with the MCC. An investigation into his history has been sparked by reports that online £45 bids were being sought for a copy of the club’s 200th anniversary history book, written in 1987. Louis Brooks, club chairman, explained: “We were totally taken aback when the tankard came up online for £500. It was being offered by a dealer, who bought it recently at a Suffolk auction.”

He said three members of the club had put up money to buy the tankard, which he hoped would be used as a trophy for individuals making special efforts to help the club.

Mr Brooks said at a club dinner in 1936, Hart was remembered in a speech by then president, Frank Nott. He described the late farmer as the best “slogger” he had ever seen.

Sudbury CC c1896 with William Allen Hart The 19th century fourth from left, back row cricketer’s father, Jeremiah Kerr Hart, was born in Edwardstone in 1815. He became an Inland Revenue officer. He married at South Shields in 1842, and among his six children was William Allen Hart, who was born in Kilmarnock in 1853.

In his early 20s, William Allen Hart and his younger brother Henry moved to work with their second cousin William Hart, at 160-acre The Willows, Edwardstone.

William died in 1874 and, although he had a daughter, the cricketer took over the running of the farm.

Henry also farmed at Boxford, and eventually died in 1938, aged 84. William Allen Hart married Elizabeth Mary Machin in 1881, but she died in 1892, while having The Willows, Edwardstone, their first child. The offspring died within a where William Allen Hart short time. In 1899, Hart married Edith farmed Parsons, of the Firs, Boxford, who was 20 years his junior. The couple were married in London, when the certificate said he was living in Marylebone. They had a daughter Eileen, who was 13 when her father died, aged 63, in 1916. His final address was given as Boser House Farm, Boxford.

In 1924, daughter Eileen (1903-1991) married Arthur Ronald Byham (19041955), and at one time they were living in Chilton. Their son Ronald Roy Byham (1925-2004), a driving instructor, married Sylvia (nee Parker) in 1950, and she became a district councillor and mayor of Sudbury, dying a short time ago. One of her two sons, David Byham, a great grandson of the cricketer, lives locally at Long Melford. He commented: “I was aware there were distant relatives by the name of Hart, but had not previously heard of the cricket connection.”

Bildeston History Quarterly

Weeds away - the easy way!

In 1911, Percy Finter came to Bildeston to set up home and a gentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hairdressing business at No. 90 High Street. He was Summer 2016 Price ÂŁ3 an accomplished musician and very keen Issue 19 on cameras, so he also had a photographic studio. The pictures that he took in and around Bildeston were issued as post cards, which today give an insight into the village one hundred years ago. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;When Bentons was Bildeston Rectoryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (part 2) looks at three incumbents who lived there from 1879 until 1921. The first was James beck, a great collector of curiosities, who also grew green-house plants with which he decorated St Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church at Christmas; and entertained up to 200 people annually to afternoon tea on his lawns, including children from Semer workhouse, for whom it was a special treat. The third rector was George McClanaghan who, like several of his parishioners, lost sons during the Great War. The reasons for the home of the rectors being moved from Wattisham Road to a house in Market Place are also investigated.

The possible reasons for the medieval woollen-cloth industry developing in this area of Suffolk and the processes involved in manufacture are rehearsed in part 1 of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;At work in Bildeston textile industryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Carders and spinners, weavers and shearmen are introduced from the documents that they left behind. For example, to support herself after the death of her husband Elizabeth Barwicke returned to spinning, while John Mauldonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; probate inventory lists possessions that indicate a quality of life beyond the basic economics of earning a living as a weaver. The diary of William Freeman Squirrell is again dipped into, this time for the early 1860s. Drunken frolics continue at the Bull Inn in Market Place; the local GP accidently shot his own dog; and the diary-keeper records that owing to the price of cotton, he had â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;only one shirt, and that all to piecesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

After making various archaeological finds at Brick House Farm in Hitcham, the conclusion was drawn that there might have been a forgotten church here.

In 1984, I was on site with my camera when skeletons were found that confirmed that theory. This second story from Hitcham features in the occasional series â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Tales from our neighboursâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and includes some rather gruesome pictures. Hadleigh and District Gardening Club Our first visit of the season took us to the gardens and arboretum of Marks Hall near Coggeshall in Essex. It was, in part, a journey through history – known as Merchesala in Saxon times, it was occupied after the Norman conquest by the Merkshall family.

In 1605 it was bought by Robert Honywood whose descendants owned the estate for nearly 300 years and gave their name to the famous Honywood oaks, one of which is thought to be over 800 years old. It was even home to U.S. airmen during the second world war.

Curator Jonathan Jukes led us on a fascinating tour of the estate. In the recent past the estate was planted with conifers by the Forestry Commission who leased the land, but in 1971 a charity was formed to protect the estate and now many areas are gradually being restored to native woodland. Other parts of the estate are planted in ‘geographic’ zones and planting is in groups rather than single specimens. We saw a group of Wollemi pines standing like a set of skittles in the distance – a strong arm with the watering can is needed as new trees need to be watered for a whole year after planting!

We ended our tour in the walled garden, the fourth wall of which is - a hedge!

This fourth ‘wall’ leads through to the lakes lower down, a good time to visit is later in the year when, on the opposite side of the lake, the trees in their autumn colours are reflected in the water. The walled garden was redesigned in 2003 and is a modern take on traditional walled gardens, with landscaped structures as well as planted terraces. The plants and trees were looking lovely with their spring blossom and fresh foliage. Our time there was all too short and I think many of us are already planning a return visit. This for me might be early in the new year when there will be two acres of snowdrops to enjoy!

Our next club meeting is Monday June 13th in the Town Hall at 7.30pm. Lucy Redman will be talking about Garden Art and the use of plants. The competition for members this month is one rose bloom. Entrance is £1 for members and £3 for non-members, including refreshments, so please come along and join us then.

Down to Earth ...with Dave Some days lately it really has seemed like summer has started early with clear skies and very warm days. This means that most of the planting out down on the allotment can go full steam ahead. The sweetcorn plants have been planted out in blocks to aid with pollination. They are contained within the very strong wire mesh badger-proof enclosure. This has to be erected around the corn every year as once the badger has found the ripening corn heads all would be destroyed, just like a fox going mad inside a chicken pen. I lost the whole crop a couple of years ago now, so up go the defences.

Various other directly sown seeds are now in- carrots, parsnips, swiss chard, spinach etc. There is an air of expectancy as the rows of tiny plants gradually emerge and it is possible to hoe between rows and to thin out the plants. No matter how carefully you sow there are always far too many little seedlings with many having to be put on the compost. Some can be transplanted or given away but not all will survive being moved.

The first asparagus has been picked, this grows very rapidly and must be cut every couple of days just below ground level. As we have four rows that have been established for several years there is plenty to share around.

Right next to the asparagus bed are the rows of daffodils, all that’s left now are masses of untidy foliage. This should be left to die back before it is gathered up and put on the compost. What a bumper year it’s been for daffs- one of the best ever. I remember years ago when the foliage used to be neatly knotted up, it looked nice but was not of benefit to the bulbs, as they need to absorb goodness from the leaves ready for next years’ flowers, likewise any growing in grass should not be mown. Next to the daffodils are the gladioli, now just showing above the ground and hopefully going to give a good supply of cut flowers for indoors. Keep earthing up the potatoes, I find I always plant them a bit too close together and then don’t have enough soil for earthing up.

All of a sudden the greenhouse is becoming less crowded, with the tomatoes now outside in their pots and baskets. I prefer to use very large pots filled with compost from grow bags, as they are easier to keep watered. Keep pinching out the side shoots on the tomatoes, as the plants grow trained up canes, it is very easy to miss one and soon you have two or more plants. When they have reached the desired height, pinch out the top, keep watered and feed with a liquid feed once the first truss has set. The basket tomatoes do not have the side shoots removed.

Suffolk’s Warm Homes Healthy People service (supported by all the District, Borough and County Councils in Suffolk) has secured funding from central government to help 270 households across Suffolk have fully-funded first time central heating. Terms and conditions apply.

To qualify, households must meet one or more of the following financial criteria: Have a household income of less than £17,000; or be in receipt of Pension Credit; or be in receipt of any other means tested benefit; or spend more than 10% of net household income on fuel; or be in substantial fuel debt (over £1,000). In all circumstances the property must be owned by you or be privately rented (i.e. not a council house or housing association property) and must only have room heaters, open fires or storage heaters. Personal saving must also not be in excess of £20,000.

In most circumstances the works will be carried out at no charge to you but if you rent privately your landlord may be expected to fund some of the costs.

This will be determined as part of the assessment process.

Due to the limited funding more vulnerable residents will be given priority.

Access for All at Orchard Barn Wednesday volunteer days at Orchard Barn are site maintenance days. With spring well established and summer now here we’ve been improving access for the many people who attend courses here.

As a training centre it’s important that less able people can come and learn, so we’ve just completed our disabled parking bay and a wide path to access the main teaching areas. We’d like to thank local contractors for their generous donations of materials and time.

The wheel-chair friendly board walk that’s been open for just over a year has been levelled off, cleaned up and oiled. The outdoor seating area in front of the barn has been repaired. The barn doors and main gates have been cleaned and oiled. More of the hedge at the front of the site has been laid and small trees transplanted into gaps in the hedge line. The car park and the mulched area between it and the hedge have been weeded. Even the wheelchair accessible compost toilet has had a spring clean!

The Unhappy Medium

by Pat Whymark, Julian Harries & Pat Marlowe Common Ground present an “entrancing” new comedy. Set in the 1920s, The Unhappy Medium tells the story of Montague Faulke, a “spiritualist” and some-time music hall entertainer (played by Julian Harries), as he struggles with his conscience, his creditors and his put-upon assistant Aubrey Miles (Patrick Marlowe who last performed with Common Ground in The Signalman).

Matters come to a head when Faulke comes under the scrutiny of psychic investigator Morton McLean, played by Dick Mainwaring – his last appearance with the company was in Stuff In The Attic. Both he and Pat Marlowe have appeared in Eastern Angles' Christmas shows. Expect oodles of ectoplasm, lashings of levitation and a bump or two in the night.

Common Ground Theatre Co was set up in 2007 by Pat Whymark and Julian Harries to create new music theatre. We have been touring steadily since then, mainly within East Anglia, producing seventeen new plays which have been received stunning reviews both here and in London. We have received funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, The Suffolk Foundation, The Seckford Foundation, Suffolk Youth Ops, The Brook Trust and Suffolk Single Gateway.

Trevor and Ashley run The London Marathon On May 23rd, Trevor Bygate and Ashley Thrower ran the London Marathon for 2 great causes. Trevor completed the course in 3hrs, 51 mins and his sponsor money is going towards The Royal British Legion.Ashley completed it in 4.5 hrs for The British Heart Foundation. A serving soldier, Trevor ran in memory of his 19 year old daughter who died in 2014. He has been running and raising money for youth charities ever since and keeping her memory alive in all that he does. Ashley ran in memory of his Uncle Graham who died of a heart attack at the age of 56 when Ash was 10. Always a special Uncle who spent a lot of time with Ash as a little boy, he has always wanted to run the Marathon to give something back to a great cause. Both Trevor and Ashley will be in Morrison’s on June 25th, from 9am- 9pm, doing a 12 hour static cycle ride to raise more money for their causes and to help them achieve their sponsor targets. A total of 20 Hadleigh Hares have been pounding the streets over the winter, building up their long runs in preparation for a Spring Marathon.

Seville Marathon Paul MacAllister kicked us off in sunny Seville going just under 4hrs 30mins narrowly missing a PB. Paris Marathon After all the cold winter training the four girls were dealt a tough hand right from the start with temperatures rising throughout the morning. Definitely not a day for fast times but just to enjoy and complete.

Jacqui Cobbold completed her 2nd marathon and now heads onto Edinburgh for her second marathon in 2 months. Karen Murphy completed her first marathon and despite the tough conditions enjoyed the day and now plans to enter either Brighton or London next year. Rachel Bodsworth completed her 3rd marathon, this was just a warm-up before she attempts 100km! in August.

Katrina Rigby enjoyed the scenic course and toughed it out as usual, She’ll be back for more next year.

Brighton Marathon We had 7 Hares entering the excellent Brighton Marathon. Team Chris (Chris, Debs & Andrew Stewart) were competing following their World Record attempt (Fastest Half Marathon pushing a Wheelchair) at Gt Bentley in February. The noise was deafening cheering them in which was well deserved after such an eventful year so far. Ironman Dave Sephton has run a couple of Marathons before but only at the end of an unbelievably long swim / bike so this should have been easy but somehow he finds running a Marathon at the end of an Ironman easier! Sara Taylor Balls also had a great run and is adamant that this is her first and last Marathon but she’ll no doubt be persuaded to go again. Pat Atwood had a great run and finished 4th in her age group, perfect preparation for her Ironman training.

London Marathon 6 runners headed to London on a cool Spring day, perfect for marathon running. Sarah Watkins who only started running 2 years ago completed her first marathon and paced it like a professional even managing a fast 5k finish. Davina Greenwell also ran a perfectly paced race to finish exactly on target and achieve a massive PB and Championship start next year.

Tim Ryder ran his first UK marathon after 3 othersacross Europe and has plans for another next Spring before the Ironman Barcelona in 2017. Mat Blacoe who has run some exceptionally quick marathon times had a tough day with a foot injury but still recorded a great time. John Scaife ran his 4th Marathon and narrowly missed the Club record so will have another go next year at either Boston or London. It was a great day for Victoria Kenny who knocked lumps out of her own Club record. A well paced run saw her finish 29th female overall and at the time of writing she sits comfortably in the UK Top 50 for the Marathon distance.

Manchester Marathon Training partners Paul Ballard and Simon Fenn headed up to Manchester for the fast flat course. Paul successfully completed his first Marathon despite being injured mid-way through and will be back again for more. Simon Fenn really cracked it this time, in his 3rd Marathon, with an excellent run to finish well inside 3hrs 30 mins and achieve a qualifying time for Boston.

Heritage Coast Marathon - Thorpeness Success for Amanda Dunn and Rachel Bodsworth who crossed the line together in joint 3rd place at the sunny, off-road event on the Suffolk Coast. Amanda now plans to run the Orkney Marathon in July.

Captain Cade is no Aunt Sally Newton Green Golf Club ladiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; captain Sally Cade put two of the best rounds of her life together to score an impressive win in the handicap section of the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s championship day.

Competing in the 36-hole event, Cade carded rounds of nett 64 and 66 - a total of eight shots below her handicap â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which has now been reduced to 12.

Playing for the Emmie Hoare Trophy, her nett score of 130 put her 10 shots ahead of second place Alice Barlow (handicap four), with Cate Fraser (15) third on 145. However, the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reigning scratch champion Barlow was not to be outdone during a day which saw 18 ladies, one with a handicap of 36, complete the two-round event.

Barlow retained the club championship Ann Tankard Trophy, with a gross score of 148, including a three over par 72 in her second round, matching the ladiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; amateur course record she equalled in lifting the scratch title last season.

Barlowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s retention of the club title came within a week of her also winning the Suffolk Ladiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Championship final.

Cadeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gross 160 gave her second place, following by Barlowâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s other joint Newton course record holder, Ellie Aldous, who was third, on 164.

Stoke by Nayland junior golfers played their first match in the Essex Golf Union Inter-Club Youth Shield on Saturday 30th April against Five Lakes Golf Club. The team are in a zoned Scratch League which includes Benton Hall, Playgolf, Clacton, Colchester and Five Lakes Golf Clubs.

Newton Green’s Alice Barlow is Suffolk Champion

Alice Barlow, at the age of 17, has taken on the might of Ipswich Golf Club to win the Suffolk Ladies’ County Golf Association match-play title.

It is the first time Newton Green Golf Club has provided a winner of an individual county ladies title for 57 years.

At the end of three days of golf at Stowmarket, involving six rounds, the Thomas Gainsborough School, Cornard, Caddie Mark Barlow with pupil came up against last year’s winner victorious daughter Alice in the final, and held her nerve to win two holes up with one to play. With her dad Mark on her bag, Barlow saw off reigning champion Lottie Whyman (Ipswich) in a match which the Newton player looked like losing after eight holes, when she was three down.

But she clawed her way back, and a birdie on the 12th brought the game level.

On the par five 13th Barlow sunk a massive putt on a hole she looked like losing, and from then on she matched Whymark, before winning the 15th and 16 holes. With a half on the 17th she was home and dry. On the 36-hole, opening stroke play day, Barlow had been equally impressive, with two of the best rounds of her life giving her second place on 150, two shots behind winner Fiona Edmonds (Ipswich). Her fellow Newton junior Ellie Aldous, also put two good rounds together to finish seventh. The scores meant the pair was into the 16-player line-up for the two-day, knock-out event. Newton was the only club to feature players in the top eight who were not members of Ipswich.

Aldous got through to the second round by beating Jenny Howlett (Bungay), before going out to eventual finalist Whyman.

Meanwhile, Barlow, who is the current Suffolk junior captain, was recording wins against May Bird (Flynn Valley), Lils James (Bungay) and, in the semifinal, Vicki Inglis (Ipswich). The Newton player also retained the Berendt Jug she won last year for the best nett score in the opening day’s stroke-play event.

She started the tournament with a handicap of five, now reduced to four.

Barlow’s success comes three years after her and Aldous, as 14-year-olds, stunned Suffolk golf by winning the Haskell Trophy. The county has confirmed both will be included in the full Suffolk squad for county golf week later in the summer. Newton’s last woman, individual county title winner was Mary Openshaw in 1959.
