Want to challenge Suffolk’s Strongest Man? Teams of 8-10 are wanted to join the St Elizabeth Hospice Truck Pull to compete to pull a truck 50 metres - in the fastest time possible. The new event, which is the first of its kind for the local charity - will take place on Saturday 18th July, from noon, outside Mannings Amusements, Felixstowe.

As well as the Truck Pull, individuals can challenge themselves further by trying their hand at the Car Lift – testing their strength and stamina as they see how many times they can lift the car – with the most repetitions winning.

Rachael Brown, St Elizabeth Hospice’s Fundraising Support Manager, said: “We wanted to hold a fun, team event to encourage a bit of friendly competition - but to organise something a bit different - and we took inspiration from Suffolk’s Strongest Man, our Catering Manager, Graham Reid.

“If you want to encourage team building and bonding or are looking for a challenge for you and your colleagues, friends or gym buddies, then this is the perfect, fun – but tough – contest for you.”

Teams for the Truck Pull can be male, female or mixed. Each team is asked to raise sponsorship with all funds raised going towards providing vital care and support to more than 2,000 local people living with a progressive illness every year. The event will be as much fun for spectators as it is for participants and there will be entertainment for all ages – so bring all the family along too for a fun day out! With thanks to: Seven Group for donating a truck for the day; Whip Street Motors for donating a car for the day; and Mannings Amusements for use of the venue.

We are delighted to announce that The Build a School in Gambia Golf Day and Dinner was a huge success raising over £16,000 for the charity. The event was staged at the Stoke By Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa and was well attended by many in the Plumbing & Heating Business. Local businessman Alan Seager of Seager Home Solutions is the driving force behind the event and charity and spends most of the year sorting out the details of the day and inviting teams to attend the event.

This year the Golf Day comprised of 38 teams and 151 players and vying for a team win! The weather was glorious making it even better being out of the office for the day. As well as the traditional ways of winning there was also an opportunity to win a Land Rover Defender on the 18th hole in a specially arranged ‘hole in one’ competition and a luxury stay at a hotel for a ‘hole in one’ on the 7th.

Sadly neither of these were won this year but everyone had fun trying!

The fun continued once everyone handed in their cards with a putting competition on the practise green. More funds were raised for the charity as everyone dug deep to enter and show off their putting skills.

After a fantastic day of golf it was time to scrub up and get the evening dinner underway.

John Wark, Ipswich FC and Liverpool football legend entertained the crowd with his after dinner speech outlining his successful footballing career. With the number of Ipswich fans in the audience, his appearance was well received. The crowd were delighted once again with comedy and impressions from Les Gibson.

The day concluded with a successful auction of fabulous donated prizes.

Tickets to football matches, a fishing trip to The Gambia and golf breaks were up for grabs and this led to some entertaining bidding wars.

The event was a huge success and we would like to thank everyone who attended and the organisers who made the event run so smoothly.

Next year’s BASIG (Build a School in Gambia) Golf Day is on the 20th May 2016.

Whatfield 12 month Challenge Next up is number 5: Brecon to Cardiff run which is an ultra 42 miles. Training has been paramount and an 18 mile race between marathons has helped with conditioning. The weather has taken a turn for the better which always helps and with Gary's commitment and his family's ongoing support he is well on the way to achieving his goal and raising much needed funds for Whatfield School. We cannot help but be impressed with the miles Gary has covered since he has started training let alone all the marathons he has already completed. Well done.

10.30am, Saturday, 18th July 2015 - Stoke by Nayland Village Hall '200 Years of Local Countryside History' by Ashley Cooper An illustrated talk following the fluctuating fortunes of local agriculture and village life through farm diaries, letters, reports from learned societies, and human memories looking at the land, those who worked it and lived around it, from about 1730 to 1940. Ashley is a full time working farmer born at Hill Farm, Gestingthorpe in 1952, shortly after his late Father had discovered a Roman villa on one of the fields. He has written five local history books, including the Long Furrow, The Khyber Connection and Our Mother Earth. Since 2013 I have been a joint patron of the Stour Valley Community Archaeology Group, which has been conducting excavations on a medieval site on the farm.

Total cost is just £14 including coffee on arrival, morning lecture, lunch, and a visit to Hill Farm, it's Museum and Roman Villa in Gestingthorpe (CO9 3BL).

Places at the Museum in the afternoon are limited to 25 so early booking is recommended.

On Saturday 9th May 2015 we hosted our Annual Reunion Service and tea party at St Gregory’s Church, Sudbury and were delighted to finally launch our book of memories which includes photos and stories 1936 – 2014 covering the school’s history, from its opening in the 1920’s, through to its transformation into Uplands Middle School in the 1970’s. For those of us involved in gathering the information, it was an absolute delight to read some of these memories and to share our own! The first print run has now completely sold out and we have a waiting list! We will be ordering more copies from Keith Avis Printers, who have been so patient with our very unprofessional approach to the book, in June, so for those of you who are interested in purchasing a copy, we need to know by 20th June at the very latest, and for those of you who are waiting for the copies you have requested, we would ask you to be patient, please. Calling all volunteers to help create colourful fun!

The count down has begun to the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) Ipswich Colour Dash and organisers calling for any willing volunteers to help on the day. The EACH Colour Dash will be held on Sunday 7th June, in Christchurch Park, Ipswich.

Colour dashes are the newest craze to hit the UK and see participants race around a 5km course as they are showered with clouds of coloured powder – creating truly impressive multi-coloured results! Event organisers are asking anyone who doesn’t feel energetic enough to take part but would still like to be involved in the colourful fun to consider volunteering as a marshal on the day.

Patsy Johnson-Cisse, EACH Fundraiser, explained: “We’re all really excited to be hosting the EACH Colour Dash in Ipswich for the second year running.

We’re on the look out for marshals for the event, to be dotted around the course, cheering on our runners and steering them in the right direction. “The event is so colourful and great to watch, the atmosphere on the day makes it so worth while to be involved in – so if you’re interested in finding out more we’d love to hear from you.” More than 500 places have been sold so far for the colour dash but spaces are still available. Patsy continued: “We’ve had pallets full of paint powder lots of colours delivered last week and a mountain of white t-shirts and medals so we’re nearly all set for a fun day! Places for the day are selling really well, so if you do want to take part I’d encourage you to book now to avoid disappointment.” The Samboomba Band will be coming along on the day to keep participants and well wishers entertained. The event had kindly been sponsored by Pure Resourcing Solutions (Pure) in Ipswich.

Hadleigh’s Medieval Woollen-Cloth Industry As part of Hadleigh Year of the Sheep 2015, there will be a morning of talks at St. Mary’s Church on Saturday 25th July (doors open 9.30) by two distinguished Suffolk historians.

Professor Mark Bailey will give ‘An overview of Suffolk’s medieval woollen-cloth industry’ while Dr. Nick Amor will look closer to home with ‘Clothmaking in Hadleigh during the 15th century: the age of William Forthe I’.

Whilst I was visiting, a fluffy Victoria sponge came out of the oven and on to the rack ready for some guests who were shortly due back.

As usual I have been out and about in the County. The Royal Hospital School at Holbrook is a fine school to behold. A party of us went to the Annual Brass Band evening there which was the Valedictory Concert for Mr Jones who has given the School’s bands his all for twenty years.

He was so entertaining and it was a great evening. My chauffeur Frank used to struggle with his French horn and his cheeks ballooned as he tried to produce middle “C”. I was delighted to see several of you at the Ipswich to Felixstowe Classic Car Run that wended its way from Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich through the Trimleys and arriving at Felixstowe. The weather was dreadful but it was thrilling to see so many well wishers waving along the route. As I commit these words, we are remembering my mother’s birthday celebrations to mark her 89th Birthday.

At 9.30pm on Friday 8th May, the Queen lighted a beacon at Windsor to commemorate the 70thh Anniversary of VE Day. At the same time in towns and villages all over the country, beacons were lighted including the one in Burstall. About 50 people met at the newly refurbished Village Hall for light refreshments and then made their way to the nearby beacon site. In accordance with national guidance, the tribute below was read out including the names of the three villagers who were killed in that conflict.

The Tribute read out to those present was Let us remember those who gave their lives at home and abroad, whose sacrifice enables us to enjoy the peace we have today And from Burstall let us remember: Gunner Charles William Davey Sgt Air Gunner Richard William Gray Fusilier Stanley Charles Heath who lost their lives in the Second World War Let us remember those who came home wounded, physically and mentally and the friends and family who cared for them Let us remember those who returned to restore their relationships and rebuild their working lives after years of conflict and turmoil Let us remember the families that lost husbands, wives, sons, daughters and sweethearts Let us remember the servicemen and women of other nationalities and faiths - from Commonwealth and Allied Countries - who fought, suffered and died during six years of war Let us remember those in reserved occupations and the brave people who kept us safe on the home front – the doctors and nurses who cared for the wounded, the men and women who toiled in the fields, those who worked in the factories and the air raid wardens, police officers, firemen, ambulance drivers, and the young people of the scouts and guides who all played such a vital role in the war effort at home.

Over £100 was donated to be sent to the Royal British Legion who continue to support those personnel and their families who still suffer from the aftereffects of the Second World War. N. J. Fiske

The Long Melford Swan and adjoining Melford House have been awarded top ratings from the AA Boutique restaurant with rooms, the Long Melford Swan, has received two AA Rosette Awards for Culinary Excellence, the highest available rating for its first visit. Newly opened Melford House has also received the highest rating, an AA Five Star rating. The Long Melford Swan is run by the Macmillan family. Lorna Pissarro and brothers’ Oliver and Iain Macmillan started their Suffolk business at the Long Melford Swan almost four years ago, supported by Dad Andrew.

Lorna Pissarro said: “Since the beginning we have set out to offer our customers quality expected of the AA accreditation system. From our contemporary menu and fine wine to a constant focus on the service we deliver, we know the importance of attention to detail. “It has been a nervous few weeks as we waited for the visit and to find out how we had done, so it was both an incredible thrill and relief when we found out we had received the top awards. I am incredibly proud of the whole team and we will be celebrating for some time to come.”

The restaurant with rooms will receive plaques to recognise the awards, which will be displayed at the front of the buildings. Melford House is a boutique luxury four bedroom guest house which opened at the beginning of this year.

With the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War being remembered this summer, some features of the war effort on the home front are related from the minute book of Bildeston Parish Council. Two public information posters show Bildeston Invasion Committee’s plans to keep residents safe, while schemes to raise funds were enthusiastically supported, for example, ‘Wings for Victory Week’ in 1943 and ‘Salute a Soldier Week’ a year later. In 1949, the First World War memorial erected in Market Place was cleaned and five more names were engraved to commemorate the fallen of the 1939-1945 conflict. A mystery for many years, Bildeston’s deserted medieval village is now investigated in depth. All the factors that contributed to the settlement’s relocation from hill-top site to the valley below will never be known but certainly, it is not the story of a population wiped out by the mid-14th century visitation of plague but probably a lord’s plans a century earlier to create a market town. For historical reasons, it is such a shame that the earthworks by the parish church were ploughed up in 1974 but also because the depressions were a great attraction during cold winter when the water in them froze and many school children enjoyed skating there. Memories of the village in the 1930’s by Peter Hubbard of Bath continue with his school days in Chapel Street and how the new head teacher Miss Wilmhurst became a great influence on his life. A brief biography of Bildestonborn artist John Roberty Hobart (1788-1863) and two of his works are featured in colour, with thanks to Museum of Thetford Life in Norfolk. Three BHQ readers have contributed short pieces that recall shops and services in Bildeston not so long ago. Monica Barber of Claydon remembers when her father was manager at Emerson’s the butcher; Cyril Francis of Stowmarket recalls the delivery van from Still’s Stores coming to Rinshall; and Percy Fletcher of Edwardstone tells of a very cold office in Market Place that he ran for Cosford Rural District Council. If you are able to volunteer to help with car parking, stewarding or catering on either of these days, with free entry to the Horse Trials, we would love to hear from you.

The Riders are now practicing hard for the Dressage and Countryside Challenge events at our in-house Shelley Show on 28th June. This is a very special occasion when the riders are able to show their friends, families and visitors their riding ability in competition with their fellow. The array of highly polished trophies is a great incentive for them to do their very best on the day in their chosen event. Awards will also be presented to riders who have been nominated by their Group Coach in recognition of the special achievement that they have made in their riding progress during the year. Grab your camera, Smartphone or tablet device and head down to the Museum of East Anglian Life this summer as we launch the ‘My Museum’ photography competition for Museum Visitors. No matter what your skill level, the ‘My Museum’ competition is open for everyone to have a go.

Snap a picture, send it in and you could be in the running for a prize!

Use our 75 acres of stunning Suffolk countryside, heritage buildings and resident wildlife as inspiration. Take photos of your day out, of your friends and family, of anything from creepy crawlies in the Walled Garden, to the turkeys or pigs in the animal area. We want to see how you view the Museum in an image that represents one of the competition categories: • Wildlife • Landscape • Architecture • People • Heritage For budding photographers, the Young Photographer categories (up to 11 and 12-18) will allow for younger visitors to also take part in a competition that all the family can enjoy. Category winners will receive a great prize and one lucky overall winner will see their image chosen as the cover image for the Museum’s 2016 attraction leaflet, with over 40,000 leaflets distributed throughout East Anglia. An incredible opportunity for somebody to see their photography work exposed to a large audience.

Anybody that visits the Museum during the competition is eligible to enter.

Take advantage of wide open green space, the River Rat nature trail and hidden gems such as the Walled Garden and Bee Garden to capture a winning image. Think you’ll need more than one visit? Why not purchase a Membership and come back as many times as you need. Additionally, when you purchase a Membership to enter the competition, you will have the fantastic opportunity to join a photography training day to be held with a professional photographer, allowing you to pick up some handy hints and tips to help create your perfect image.

How to enter Visitors can fill out a registration form when they enter the Museum, they are then free to take photographs throughout the Museum site. Photographs can then be submitted via email to competition@eastanglianlife.org.uk The competition closes at 5pm on Wednesday 30th September 2015, winners will be announced shortly afterwards with a prize giving ceremony at the end of October.

Plants are flying out from Hollow Trees Farm Plant Centre We grow the vast majority of our plants on site at Hollow Trees Farm and it’s just as well we have upped our production of them this year. We have recently invested in more poly tunnels and are growing many of our best sellers together with some interesting less well known varieties. The range of patio and basket plants available nowadays have improved beyond recognition. The plant breeders have worked hard producing better colours, improved habit and plant health.

One to recommend is Trixie (pictured) a colour co-ordinated range of three plants in one pot.

They are proving very successful and are excellent value compared to buying three separate plants. Tray bedding sales are still holding their own. This year our summer concert will be held in Boxford Church (where we hope parking will be easier than at Polstead). We are going there because one of our main items is the popular Scherzo for piano and orchestra by Litolff (about the only thing he’s remembered for today!), and at Boxford church there is the ideal piano for this work. The other main item will be the last two movements of Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony. This is the very dramatic depiction of a storm and the calm that follows it. The programme will also include Bizet’s ‘Carillon’ and the overture to Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin’ – a real crowd pleaser.

As usual entry is free but we will ask you to contribute to a retiring collection as you leave which will help us to cover our expenses and enable us to make a donation to the church.

Friday June 12th Our traditional walk along the historic Monks Path to Kersey, and then to participate in the liquid delights of the Bell Inn. We will leave St. Marys School, Stonehouse Road at 6.30pm. We will return via Kersey Vale, Coram Street, and Constitutional Hill arriving back about 9pm.

This walk is suitable for all walkers, Children, and Dogs, and is only 5 miles in length.

Saturday June 13th By popular request we will fly the Orwell (Walk over the Orwell Bridge). We will leave Hadleigh by bus at 9.30am from the bus station car park side and travel to Sproughton Crossroads. We will then walk to Ipswich via Tesco’s, Pinewood, Belstead Village, Thorington Hall, Wherstead Village, over the Orwell Bridge, Orwell Country Park, Landseer Park, Holywells Park, and the Ipswich Water Front. This walk is 10 miles in length and it will take about 4 hours to complete. It is suitable for all fit walkers, children over 10 years and dogs. We will return to Hadleigh by bus leaving Ipswich Bus Station at 2.15 pm arriving back at 2.42 pm.

Sunday June 14th A gentle 6.5 mile circular walk around the west and north of Hadleigh. We will leave St. Marys School, Stonehouse Road at 10am and walk via Duke Street, Park Farm, Potts Cottages, Hadleigh Heath, Kersey Vale, Monks Path, Castle Road, and the River Side Walk to Toppesfield Bridge. This walk will take about 2.5 hours to complete, and is suitable for all walkers, children over eight and dogs.

Babergh announces its leader and portfolio holders With a single party in majority control for the first time in its 42-year history, Babergh District Council’s Full Council meeting today (May 19th) registered an impressive series of firsts. The district elections on May 7th resulted in the Conservatives winning 31 seats compared to the Independent and Labour group’s nine and the Liberal Democrat total of three. No fewer than 23 new councillors were elected, representing what is thought to be the largest intake of first time representatives in the District Council’s existence.

As a result of their unprecedented majority, the Conservatives have formed the new administration and whilst maintaining the committee system have renamed the previous ‘Lead Member’ roles as Portfolio Holder positions to align them with their equivalents at Mid Suffolk District Council.

The following senior team was approved at today’s Full Council: Cllr. Jennie Jenkins: Leader and Portfolio Holder for Finance & Resources Cllr. Frank Lawrenson: Portfolio Holder for Environment Cllr. David Holland: Portfolio Holder for Housing Cllr. Jan Osborne: Portfolio Holder for Health & Wellbeing and Communities Cllr. Simon Barrett: Portfolio Holder for Growth and the Local Economy (including Planning) Cllr. Peter Patrick: Portfolio Holder for Public Access Cllr. Nick Ridley has become Chairman of the Council, having previously served in the same role between 2012 and 2014 – another first.

Much has been achieved thanks to them, especially in their support for the new ways of working with our partner, Mid Suffolk District Council, that are transforming what we are able to deliver at a time of ongoing financial cutbacks.

By the way, congratulations to Anita Young, newly elected Councillor for Hadleigh South from all your friends at SESAW. Life at SESAW can be a roller coaster of happy and sad stories but this one ends like a Walt Disney film. Three months ago, a Graylag Goose was shot and callously left to die. Fortunately, caring people brought her to SESAW where she eventually recovered and was ready for release. Very early this morning, along with our own domestic geese and ducks on the field, Mum spotted something new - a pair of Graylag Geese. Quietly, she ushered the rescued bird out to meet the visitors and after grazing for two hours, the three flew away together until they disappeared into the distance. Arrh! Meanwhile, two little chaps still looking for a home are Snoopy, a Parsons Jack Russell and his Chihuahua type companion, Pip who loves a cuddle once he knows you.

Initially nervous, these five year olds would soon settle with a grown up family or active retired couple.

Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hope the suns shines for the Leavenheath Open Gardens day on Sunday 14th June, at least between 11-5pm. Chernobyl Childrens Lifeline Mid Suffolk Link Having just returned from Belarus I regret that we have found no improvement in the conditions for the people we visit. In fact things have got considerable worse due to rising unemployment and the enforcement of a “foreign exchange” tax. Although people are paid and goods are purchased in Belarusian Roubles everything is worked out on the US Dollar and the 30% tax now imposed has effectively caused inflation of 30% also. Also, anyone who is of working age but not employed will have to pay an annual Tax despite the fact they may be available for work but unable to find a job. In the area where the children come from some of the people have been put on either a three or four day week.

It is even more important for us to raise the necessary money to not only bring these children here for respite breaks but also to be able to engage in projects to help others back home as well. With this in mind we would ask you to support our new Fundraising event for this year. On 27th June we are holding a Country and Western Themed evening. The venue has been provided by one of our Host families at The Old Timber Barn, Church Farm,Church Lane, Somersham. (Only ten minutes from Needham Market & Ipswich) The “Old Piggery” Pop Up Bar will be open serving real ales at very competitive prices (Wine and soft drinks will also be on sale) plus live Music from a six piece band, Box Car Kelly and the Railroaders, the ticket price also includes a great Hog Roast. For anyone who would like to to make a night of it our Hosts have kindly offered the use of the adjacent field for overnight campers at no additional charge but camping pitches must be booked in advance.

We were able to attend an event there recently and can assure you of a fantastic atmosphere, good food, great entertainment and of course good company ;o). Western dress is invited but not compulsory and there will be a prize for the best dressed Cowgirl/Boy. We also hope to have someone on hand to show anyone the basics of Line Dancing so even the complete beginners (and that includes myself) can have fun trying it out if they want to.

Kersey Mill Newsletter The month of May has seen an incredible number of visitors here at the Mill.

National Mills day was well attended by visitors wanting to see our progress with the restoration. We had people from near and far, including Germany, the Home Counties and the north of England. We were thrilled to see the Whitmore family from Salisbury who had come to Suffolk to see the work of their ancestors. John Whitmore & son, they were an established family business founded in 1780, they produced engines and complete mills.

Whitmore & Sons built the original section of Kersey Mill around 1810, in 1868 George Binyon became a partner and the company became known as Whitmore and Binyon. It was soon after that when Kersey Mill was extended and the steam engine along with the elevators and bolters along with the other machinery on the upper floors were installed. The name of Whitmore & Son, along with the latter additions Whitmore & Binyon are clearly visible on the machinery today.

With the works taking place leading up to National Mills Day, the timing was perfect. The Pitwheel re-cogged with its lovely new oak teeth was completed the day before the open day. The visitors were delighted to see the Layshaft turning by water power.

The craftsmanship displayed by Mill Wrightsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Bill Griffiths and Tim Whiting is a real credit to them.

Their enthusiasm and attention to detail in their work is a pleasure to see. We were delighted that Bill was in attendance all day to share his incredible degree of Wind and Water Mill knowledge with the visitors.

This was the first open day since the waterwheel was been refurbished together with brick floor and protective railings installed within the wheel house providing a safe environment in which visitors can enjoy the spectacular and incredibly powerful wheel turn using minimal amounts of water.

May has also seen our annual visitors take up residence it the mill once again. This is the third year running.

They must love this place. Kersey Mill has been favoured as their summer home and a safe place to raise their off-spring.

At the time of writing we have five Kestrel eggs within their nested home. This year we have installed cameras with a link to the Arts & Craft Barn screen to ensure that the public can enjoy the progress of the Kestrels and their chicks. So do pop along to see â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the chicks are due in June. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wonderful to watch and fascinating how the father & mother take care & feed their young.

Suffolk Q Guild Butcher chosen for national BBQ contest finale A Q Guild butcher from Suffolk is getting fired up to take on counterparts from across the UK in the national final of their annual barbecue competition.

Winners of the Eastern regional heat have now been announced and Andrew’s Quality Butchers of Hadleigh will be hoping for further sizzling success at next month’s finale, when national winners in each of six BBQ product categories will emerge. One of them will have the ultimate honour of being crowned overall supreme champion by the Q Guild, which represents 110 awardwinning butchers from the Scottish Highlands down to the south coast.

Andrew’s Quality Butchers will be at the finals after winning the Steak category with their locally reared beef, matured for 28 days. The shop also picked up three more gold awards for their Pork Sausage, Beef Burger and Toulouse Sausage. Andrew Belcher, owner of Andrew’s, said: “The steak is one of the biggest sellers in our shop. We’re delighted to win the regional award – it’s very tough competition so we’re very pleased to have achieved such a high standard up against our peers. We’re very much looking forward to the national competition.”

Almost 300 products from Q Guild butchers nationwide were entered for this year’s competition. Q Guild national chairman, Alnwick butcher Mark Turnbull said: “Entries have increased this year, such is the prestige of winning a Q Guild BBQ championship. Hopefully, the weather will warm up as the 2015 BBQ season gets into full swing and one thing’s for sure – Q Guild butchers come well equipped to cater for al fresco aficionados nationwide.”

French’s Care Haven A lovely day was had by French’s at the Hadleigh Show, we send a big thank you out to all the people who made a donation to us. We have had a busy month of May, French’s would like to send a big thank you out to Wattisham air base, they sent 9 of their guys who had kindly donated their time to come and help us with our fencing.

We could not have done the work without them and they were fantastic on the day, for the safety of our animals and the people who care for them it was imperative to have the new secure fencing put in place and they did a brilliant job. We are always looking for volunteers to help with maintenance and help with other jobs on the farm, but the job of banging in big posts was a hard one and needed someone who was physically fit and able and the guys from the air base were certainly that!

On Sunday 21st June we are having an open day for visitors to come along and have a look around and join us for tea cakes and sandwiches. This will be organised by a small group of ladies that help us raise money for our Charity and they are planning a special surprise on the day. There will also be a famous Equestrian artist coming along to chat with people and display her artwork, I am sure some pieces will be available to buy and you may be able to speak to her about painting your animal for you. Our visitor day is open to all locals and the people of Suffolk are welcome to come along and join us.

You might remember my previous articles in the HCN giving details of my charity motorcycle challenge across the Himalayan foothills in India planned for October later on this year with 3 of my old college mates. We are all around the 60 mark hence the reference to “Wild Hogs”, for those that know of the film. This is just one challenge of many different types organised by Global Adventure Challenges, a company who specialise in charity fundraising events all around the world. But you don’t have to complete a challenge for charity, you could just pay for it yourself (as my 3 mates are).

And even though I have decided to do the challenge for charity, the trip is not all paid for by monies from my fundraising.

I have already had to pay an upfront registration fee of £370 and will also be responsible for paying for travel insurance, airport taxes, airline fuel surcharges and costs of jabs and inoculations – all in all about £1000!

My fundraising target is atleast £3,500 for a charity called “Breathing Matters” which is aligned with lung infection and pneumonia research and is part of UCLH Charity No 229771 and I chose this particular charity because of suffering from severe lung infection and pneumonia in spring last year and have now only just about recovered from the illness. Fidelis Activity News Microwave Meals in a Minute: The demonstration by Jane Sago highlighted the versatility of this essential piece of kitchen equipment. It soon became clear that this speedy machine could be more than just an emergency defrosting unit. From meringues to casseroles and the resurrection of dried fruit and leftover veggies, Jane showed its many capabilities. Jane is no stranger to the limelight having once been asked to put left-over Christmas turkey to good use for a local TV programme. As the proof of the pudding is in the eating members were happy to sample the results of the demonstration.

La Fille Mal Gardée:- Frederick Ashton’s colourful romantic comedy ballet delighted its audience of which Fidelis members were part. Although it was beamed in live from Covent Garden to Cineworld, Ipswich this did not detract from the superb performance by Natalia Osipova, Steven McRae and the Royal Ballet Company. It was a feast of colour, sound and humour which uplifted and cheered us all in the run up to the election.

More Than A Splash:- On a recent visit to Kersey, Blue Badge Guide Ian Baalham, not only introduced his audience to the hidden treasures of the village but also entertained them with interesting historical information and humorous anecdotes. Apart from looking more closely at the familiar High Street and The Splash the ladies viewed Hammond Innes’ previous residence, the Church and several other noteworthy listed buildings. This absorbing walk ended with refreshments at Corncraft and a browse round Bridge Farm Barns.

BBC daytime show The Housing Enforcers, featuring Matt Allwright, the champion of consumer rights, heads to Babergh and Mid Suffolk. For many of us mortgages are unaffordable, council houses are full, and the number of new houses built each year is half those needed. In total, more than eight million people rent their home from the council or a private landlord. The last time the number was this high Britain still had food rationing.

The Housing Enforcers sees Matt Allwright join council teams as a trainee housing officer, separating hovels from homes in sixteen locations across the UK. In this the 20 x 45’ series, Matt confronts dodgy landlords, unwilling tenants, nightmare neighbours and he’ll come to the rescue of those in need.

The producers, Twofour, worked with Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils to secure access to Housing Officers working in the area.

Staff from the councils’ Housing Team spent two months earlier this year filming with the production company across both districts. They visited a variety of different tenants, each with their own particular problem or issue. Officers were keen to show how different their role – and the challenges they face - in a rural area compared with more urban councils across the UK. Gavin Fisk, Babergh and Mid Suffolk’s District Councils’ Corporate Manager – Tenant Services, said the team worked hard to show the production team all aspects of the work they face on a day-to-day basis. He said: “The work of Housing Officers often goes unnoticed. We expect this series of Housing Enforcers to highlight the challenges faced by our staff everyday whilst managing rural housing. Housing officers are often unsung heroes whose work has a direct impact on the lives of those tenants they come in to contact with.

“Officers involved in the filming really enjoyed working with Matt Allwright and members of the production team. We hope the TV series to show just how diverse, sometimes difficult, but above all rewarding, the work of Housing Officers is.” Ian Watson, Community Housing Officer for Babergh and Mid Suffolk, added: “It was great having some time with Matt he understands the housing issues and is genuinely concerned for the tenants and how we deal with them. “I am looking forward to seeing how our work compares with the the other councils up and down the country.”

Build A School in Gambia Race Night On the 28th March a Race Night was held and raised over £1000 for the charity.

They bought some land and built a fabulous new school. The evening was held at Whatfield Village Hall and the venue lent itself well to the event due to it having a fully loaded bar (!) and a stage for the large racing screen. It was a superb atmosphere and everyone enjoyed the evening with lots of noise cheering on their horses/donkeys and Afghan hounds …yes, that isn’t a typo!

There was great support from Seager Home Solutions and Plumb Mate who kindly sponsored a couple of the races. The evening raised over £1000 for the charity with over £100 raised on the cake stand (Seager's Home Solutions very talented Dianne from the office spent a few days baking the delights that literally went like 'hot cakes'!

Cosford Comment ...from Jenny Antill Due to the election I was not able to write a Cosford Comment last month.

May 7th marked the end of my eight year period as a Babergh District Councillor. Although some people manage to serve on both councils, I personally do not believe that it is possible to perform well in both jobs, and this is particularly true if your District Ward does not overlap with your County Division. I have enjoyed my time on Babergh and will miss many of the officers with whom I worked. The council has seen a good deal of change over the past eight years, most significantly the merger of the officer structure with that of Mid Suffolk District Council. This has inevitably changed the ‘feel’ of Babergh and, while money has certainly been saved, not all the changes have been for the better. There is certainly less active debate among members.

Formerly we used to have a very lively annual session, the State of the District Debate, at which everyone could ride their particular hobby horse for their allotted three minutes. Sadly such wide ranging discussions are a thing of the past. Latterly council meetings have often been rubber stamping exercises, when they have not been cancelled due to ‘lack of business’. Towards the end of my term I attracted criticism for supporting Robert Lindsay’s efforts to stimulate debate on the issue of the effect of supermarkets on the traditional high street. While I accept this is an important matter, particularly in an area of market towns, I must admit that my principal aim was to try to inject some democratic life into council proceedings.

It will come as no surprise to my former Babergh colleagues that my worry for the future concerns the council’s unrelenting emphasis on promoting development and economic growth to the exclusion of other considerations. In my last Cosford Comment I wrote about the importance of tourism to the local economy. Some people find it hard to understand that failure to conserve our natural and historical assets, a failure to keep Babergh beautiful, could well damage the vibrant economy that they are seeking to promote.

Whatfield Footpath Walks A series of footpath walks accompanied by long term residents who can fill in some of the background are being planned. All start from the village hall, they are: Sunday June 28th 2pm based on Furneaux Farm Richard Mower and Jimmy Wilding Sunday July 19th 2pm based on Lower Farm (Peyton Hall) Ronnie Gant and Jimmy Wilding Sunday September 20th 2pm based on Hill Farm Richard Mower and Jimmy Wilding We hope these will appeal to all residents and a wider audience who like walking especially those who are new to the village or area. They will not be overly long!

Building for all at Orchard Barn Much has been achieved since 2007 when restoration of the Barn began. The old timbers were repaired using locally sourced wood and eased back into position. The old corrugated metal roof was removed, the original pitch discovered, restored and 20,000 hand-crafted shingles used to cover it. A tool shed has been built on one end that has daub under the roof tiles for added insulation and a rest room is being repaired at the back of the Barn.

But during all this activity we haven’t forgotten the wildlife that lives in the area. Many of our deadwood screens, not only providing support for piles of compost or shelter from the wind, also provide a home for bugs and birds.

Recently we’ve tried to attract house martins to nest on the Barn by providing a 5-bay cob terrace complete with oak roof as pictured.

And of course birds are always looking for safe spots to nest and this year we have a pair of blackbirds and a pair of thrushes nesting inside the Barn with homes high up on the wall-plate.

News from Whatfield School Villagers will be used to seeing us walk down to the church with fluorescent jackets on, and forming our Whatfield line to cross the road, but they may not be aware that we have two Junior Road Safety Officers, who work all year to raise the profile of Road Safety issues at school, organising competitions and leading assemblies on how to keep safe. This year they linked up with the road safety officers who have just started at Bildeston Primary School, and shared some good ideas with them.

At Whatfield CEVCP School we celebrate all achievement and are proud of the huge variety of talent in our small school. We Walking back home always enjoy swimming, and the majority of the school have taken part in lessons and a schools gala this year.

Our Quicksticks (hockey) team did particularly well this year, assisted by our ‘Mumagers’ they got through to the County finals, and were one goal away from going through to the nationals. A fantastic result for a school of 42 pupils! Again, two proud artists from our school, Eloise and Archie, were awarded the honour of exhibiting at Aldeburgh. They were chosen above artists from every Primary School in Suffolk, and represent both ends of the school from year 6 to Reception! We love our Early Years Area, and the whole space is well used, with Quicksticks a range of activities for the children to explore. Superheroes have been popular this year, and have sparked an interest in writing and talking. It’s good to know they have time to relax and chat when they are not saving the world!

As a school in a rural setting, we like to ensure we are looking outwards at what is happening in the rest of the country, and fundraising for comic relief and supporting world book day are two of the ways we do that.

We aim to make education exciting and engaging so that pupils want to learn about the world. This terms topic on space has been a real success, as have some of the Art and Maths projects that have been going on around the school. We want our pupils to be the best they can be, and so Winning Whatfield Artists were thrilled to give them the opportunity, with children from Bildeston, Kersey and Elmsett, to watch the Wolsey Theatre production of ‘When I grow up’ which encourages children to think about long term goals, and what they will need to do to get to them. Ideas ranged from being footballers, performers, teachers, actors, fashion designers, vets and artists to working for the police and RSPCA. If we help the children to fulfil any of those dreams, or produce adults in any or all of those fields of work we will have done a good job!

Hadleigh and District Gardening Club had the pleasure of welcoming one half of that amazing and dynamic duo who, at a very young age, conceived the idea of selling their farm produce direct to the public. Yes it was Sally from Hollow Trees Farm. They started with a hand cart at the bottom of the lane where they grew their produce and which, after some time, finished up at the entrance to their present site. This is quite difficult to write without sounding O.T.T. but these two are really something else. When they started Robert was growing the produce and Sally was delivering boxes to various shops, en route to her 'proper' job and they were living on site in a caravan.

Talk about 'from little acorns mighty oak trees grow.' Anyone who has lived locally could not fail to have noticed how year on year they have grown, winning ‘Farm Shop of the Year’, although as Sally pointed out it was the only year it has been run. What is so impressive is their determination to show the public, and particularly children, where their food actually comes from and, to that end of course, the farm trails have proved an irresistable draw for the children and parents alike. The vastly expanded business now has a dedicated building used as a classroom, which is used to teach all aspects, as local schools bring in children for Sally to talk to. How important is this? We read from official data that a lot of children know more about African animals than they do about the ones they eat on a daily basis, and even think that potatoes grow on trees! More power to their elbows, and my, how they have worked over the years, so to Sally and Robert, many congratulations and thanks for your input into the life of this locality. Over the summer months the club will be out and about visiting gardens near to home and further afield.

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh is on June the 6th, and right now I am very relieved that I did not agree to open mine this year. When I wrote the last column I really felt that Mary & I were getting back in control of our garden, but since then we have both been hit by the cold bug which seems to be going around Hadleigh and the garden has suffered. The fact that I am not open means that I shall be able to enjoy visiting the gardens that are open.

My garden has been invaded by a weed that is new to me. I usually have plenty of weeds in my garden, and I know most of them by name, but this Spring a weed appeared that I did not recognise. In fact I had to dig my reference books out to identify it. It turned out to be White Bryony, which my reference books tell me occurs widely in hedgerows on well drained soils, but I had not seen it in 40 years of gardening in Hadleigh. It also does not explain why I have seedlings germinating in my cold frames. It is poisonous to us, but apparently birds can eat the berries, and are the most common explanation for it spreading.

Apparently some extra regulations on the sale of insecticides and fungicides come into effect in the Autumn. At the moment I have not managed to work out the implications if any for amateurs, but I gather that shops selling these products will have to have a member of staff with appropriate qualifications.

The 3 monthly total at the end of April was 74.2 mm (2.9") which is about a third of the average figure. In early May we seem to be catching up quite quickly. In April the maximum temperature was 21 Cel (70F) which is quite normal and the minimum temperature was 2 Cel (36F) which is slightly warmer than average. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 10 Cel (50F). This is slightly warmer than normal.

Hints

By June plants have been bought and planted, and most seedling have been raised, so to a large extent gardening moves into a maintenance phase. Plants need to have adequate water and feed, and weeds and insect pests need to be kept under control, but the peak in gardening work is over. Some plants will need a bit of extra support as they grow. This particularly applies to tall stately plants like delphiniums.

There are optional things that one can do. For example one can get bigger rose blooms by removing side buds on a stem, and if you have space you can lift and divide polyanthuses and primroses so that you have more plants for next years display.

Many flowering plants will give you extra flowers if you remove the dead flowers before the plant uses its energy to make seed.

June is not too late to sow seeds of many vegetables, particularly with things like lettuce when you want a continuous supply.

The 176th Hadleigh Show Saturday 16th May 2015 Despite a variable forecast the sun shone once again on the beautiful setting of Holbecks Park for our annual show and the crowd came out inforce to visit this rural showcase. With the launch of Hadleigh Year of the Sheep the focus was on our local community and the part that farming has played in its history and still plays today.

Sheep were to be found all over the showground from the School Art work in the Education Tent to Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a Sheep get me out of Here! in the Countryside Ring.

Real sheep were also found in abundance up in the livestock area, along with cattle, goats and Suffolk horses, whilst horses of all types and colour were competing in other rings.

Highlights in the Grand Ring included the daring stunts of Inch Perfect Trials Display Team and a demonstration of state of the art sugar beet machinery showing just how the sugar for your cornflakes is grown in this area.

Numerous local trade stands were showcasing their businesses and the Food Hall was busy all day with many local producers to tempt the taste buds. The Flower Show and Rural Craft Marquees were, as usual, filled with a spectacle of colour and talented craftsmen.

The Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association would like to thank everyone who has supported or visited the show this year. So whether you have been attending this event for years or came for the first time, we hope to see you again next year on 21st May 2016.

Lavenham Players are proud to announce that their next production will be an open-air performance of one of William Shakespeare's most celebrated comedies, Twelfth Night, co- directed

by Gemma Leggett and Penny Mills.

Building on the success of Lavenham Players' memorable 2013 production of Much Ado About Nothing, which captured the imagination of the village and beyond, this production will once again take place amid the elegant surroundings of the beautiful Lavenham Hall, with evocative music that will transport you back in time to the roaring twenties, so expect a Charleston or three! The last open-air Shakespeare production, a complete sell-out, proved to be enormous fun both for those involved on stage and our audience, and we are confident that 2015's effort will be no exception. Gemma said, "After the huge success of ‘Much Ado About Nothing’, Penny and I are delighted to have been asked to direct this summer’s production of ‘Twelfth Night’. We have been so lucky to secure a hugely experienced cast, many of which were involved two years ago, and have performed open-air theatre in the past. It is a bittersweet tale of contrasting emotions, weaving together several intriguing sub-plots of fools and madmen, brash drunkards and scheming servants, mourning matriarchs and confused twins, and of course that famous pair of yellow stockings! The result is a story that is both hilarious and thought-provoking in equal measure.

Stoke by Nayland Golf Club Dickens’ Celebrate Jubilee Salvers win The popular Bank Holiday Monday Jubilee Salvers mixed competition was played in warm, sunny conditions on Stoke by Nayland’s Gainsborough course.

Twenty four pairs made up the field for the exacting Foursomes format. Although scoring was difficult Tracey and Tim Dickens led the competition with a creditable 35 points. The Hadleigh Historian: Issue 28 (June-July 2015)

The series ‘Made in Hadleigh’ continues with ‘Public Clocks’ by regular contributor The Hadleigh Historian The Hadleigh Historian Millie Goulbourn of Hadleigh. Millie has June - July 2015 Price £3 Issue 28 been researching into Hadleigh’s clockmakers and from this, she has chosen to highlight clocks on display for the benefit of the public along with their makers. These include a variety of timepieces, some of which are still in use today, as well as a magnificent 17th century sundial on a long-gone south porch of St Mary’s Church. Mike Woods of Layham kindly loaned photographs, which has led to research on Joseph Foster and his family. He was manager of the gas works in Bridge Street from 1896 until 1930 but the story revolves around a wartime wedding group pictured in 1915, which shows the brothers of the bride in their military uniforms. Tales of the various manors of Hadleigh continues with ‘Who’s been living in Peyton Hall?’ As the owners of the manor of Hadleighs in Hadleigh were seated at Hintlesham Hall, Peyton Hall was home to a series of tenant farmers. A probate inventory drawn up in 1720 not only takes us through the house room-by-room but also into farmyards and fields. The late John Bloomfield identified this timber-framed building as a raised aisle hall of 1300, one of the oldest houses on the area. Fredrick Holbrow’s memories of Hadleigh continue with his time during the late 1930’s at the Brett Works in Pound Lane. His particular gang of friends were keen on going to the cinema, not only in Ipswich but also the Palace Cinema in Hadlegh High Street. Fred also mentions the fish & chip shops that the boys visited, as well as the Coffee Tavern, which is featured on the back cover.

Barbara Scarff of Hadleigh is to be thanked for the loan of her brother’s manuscript memoirs. In order to encourage visitors to the town, 2015 is ‘Hadleigh Year of the Sheep’ and the Hadleigh Historian is proud to sponsor a morning of talks on Saturday 25 July in St Mary’s Church. The speakers Professor Mark Bailey and Dr Nick Amor are well-known Suffolk historians and their subjects will be the medieval woollen-cloth industry with special reference to Hadleigh. Doors open at 9.30 and the £10 tickets will include refreshments. (For details of tickets, please see notice elsewhere in this issue of Hadleigh Community News.)

Recipe for Success Now I don’t know about you, but I resent recipes that start with “First find your pheasant”, and so in response to one reader who has asked for simplicity, you can’t get much more simple, or more tasty for that matter, than home made pesto. And let’s face it, it’s a great excuse to add BASIL.

by Sarah Thompson (Buy And Source It Locally) Now thanks to the lovely Trimley Herb brigade, another basil, of the Greek variety don’t you know, is gracing the Thompson kitchen windowsill. So here we go…

Home Made Pesto Ingredients: 100 gms pine nuts Large bunch of basil 50 gms Parmesan cheese (grated) One clove of garlic 150 mls. olive oil (plus extra for storing) Method 1. Heat a small frying pan over a low heat. Cook the pine nuts until golden, shaking occasionally. Make sure they don’t catch and burn, or you will end up with a bitter flavour to the pesto, and you don’t want that! Put into a food processor with the remaining ingredients and process until smooth, then season.

2. Pour the pesto into a sealed or air-tight jar, cover with a little extra oil, then store in the fridge. It will keep in a fridge for up to two weeks. But a word of caution, if added to your favourite pasta, or used as a dip with artisan bread (lots of lovely local loaves to choose from) it may not last that long!

Alice Regains Newton Green Ladies Title Alice Barlow scored a second round, course record equalling 72 to take the ladies’ 36-hole scratch championship at Newton Green Golf Club. For the fourth consecutive year the title represented a head-tohead tussle between Barlow and her fellow junior and Suffolk ladies player Ellie Aldous. Both 16-yearolds scored 79 in their morning rounds, and in the afternoon Aldous could only improve her score by one shot, for a 157 total, but Leighann Wordley and Alice Barlow Barlow’s three over par second round 72 saw her regain the title by six shots.

Her 72 equalled the previous best ladies’ score set at Newton by Aldous. The pair now have their names on the Ann Tankard Trophy twice each. In the 36hole nett score championship for the Emmie Hoare Cup, Leighann Wordley produced scores of 69 and 74 to give her a one shot margin win over Cate Fraser.
