French visitors welcomed to Hadleigh Some visitors have been coming for many years and for others it was their first visit to our lovely medieval town. They were warmly welcomed at the Royal British Legion in George Street by Hadleigh and District Twinning Association members and the new town mayor Sue Angland. Friday evening was a night spent renewing friendships and making new friends at various dinner parties and BBQ’s around Hadleigh. On Saturday at their request they went to visit Cambridge where they were given a guided tour and then left to explore the city. Back in Hadleigh it was a quick change and off to the Town Hall for a delicious buffet by Cheryl Chaplin and a non-stop dance with Lindy Lou late into the night. Sunday morning saw three brave Frenchmen and our own Nick Gilbert board an oil-drum raft on the river Brett and battle their way through water pistols to come nearly last in the Scouts annual Raft Race.

The afternoon was kept casual and our members were left to amuse their guests with shopping, visits to the seaside and eating. In the evening we had our formal Dinner Dance in the lovely peaceful surroundings of Hintlesham Hall Golf club where we were presented with a wrought iron cockerel- a symbol of France, which was hand painted by their very talented member Roland Verbeck. As usual the weekend was over far too quickly and on Monday morning we all gathered at Hadleigh Leisure Centre car park for our

group photograph and to make sure everyone was safely on the coach ready for the long journey home. We have lots of fundraising events throughout the year where we meet up and an active committee which does all the planning.

Thankyou from Robert Lindsay I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me in the South Cosford by-election and who thereby helped to elect a Green councillor for the first time ever to Babergh District Council. It was a close-run thing, I finished just 16 votes ahead of the Conservative candidate. Yet he and my other opposing candidates, huddled anxiously around the table where the count was taking place, were gracious in conceding their defeat and shaking my hand when the final tally was announced. So there was no need for a recount.

A closely fought election is probably a good thing for democracy and will certainly keep me on my toes for the 11 months I have in office before I have to seek re-election along with all other Babergh councillors. I was particularly pleased to see the size of the turnout - 55% - much higher than the turnout for the Euro election across Babergh and the Eastern region which was, I believe, 30-something per cent. I’m told Semer polling station - the village hall - drew in something like 55 people on the day – which apparently it hasn’t seen for many a day! It was fun meeting people on the doorsteps of the villages of Elmsett, Whatfield, Nedging with Naughton, Semer, Kersey and Aldham, but inevitably I was unable to meet everyone, so I look forward to meeting more of my constituents in the coming months, whichever way they voted, and to meeting the parish councillors in the six villages, who have been without a district councillor since my predecessor quit in March.

At the time of writing (June 8) I have only just been inducted in my new role so I am unable to regale you with tales of the council at work. However, I can say that I have been impressed with the warmth of welcome from fellow councillors - particularly of the independent persuasion - and the care and courtesy with which the council officers have welcomed me to their Cork’s Lane premises. This is good because, if I want to get anything done for my constituents and for the area, I will have to work with officers and councillors of all political parties.

As I first step, I have teamed up with Councillor Clive Arthey, a councillor with no party label (not even that of “independent”) who has for many years represented the neighbouring ward of North Cosford. For the remaining 11 months of our term, we have decided to form a group, based geographically on our two wards, which we are calling “The Cosford Group”.

It is a technical issue but two councillors together constitute a “group” and get slightly greater access to officers than we would as lone councillors. We can also substitute for each other when one of us is unable to attend a committee meeting It does not mean that we have to vote the same way, and I am sure Clive and I will have different views about a lot of things, but so long as we share all information and explain to each other why we think what we think, then I’m confident our arrangement will work.

The 134th Sudbury Regatta will be taking place this year on Saturday 2nd August on Friars Meadow, Sudbury. The 650m rowing course attracts clubs from far and wide providing an exciting day of racing for both competitors and spectators alike. The course is raced upstream from a stakeboat start with some challenging bends along the way. One of the highlights of the day is the sprint eights racing along the 350m meadow stretch of the river – perfect for spectators! As well as the on-water entertainment, there are activities to keep children entertained, an on-land rowing machine challenge – fastest rowed 500m of the day – and the usual food and drink outlets in the form of BBQ, beer tent and tea cake tent.

Keep Calm and Take a Selfie Keep Calm and Take a Selfie - Is what Free Rein challenged both the exhibitors and visitors to do at the recent Anglia Business Exhibition, and as a result had people queuing up to submit their entries via the iPads on Stand 62, via their own smart phones and in-directly via twitter when they got back to their offices the following day.

The winners of the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;selfieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; competition were Caroline Gould of Caroline Gould Events and Richard Pond of Business Connected whose selfies were immortalised in icing, sponge, jam and cream as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;mini-meâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; selfie cakes.

Caroline and Richard were delight by their wins and entered into the spirit of the competition by posing with their cakes and tweeting their success on social media.

Commenting on her win, Caroline said â&#x20AC;&#x153;Social media is a great tool to connect with new customers. The Free Rein â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;selfieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; competition is a simple example of how you can make it work for your businessâ&#x20AC;?. A sentiment echoed by Richard's comment, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;selfieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; competition was light hearted fun at a business exhibition. It does however highlight the opportunity that exists by engaging people via social mediaâ&#x20AC;?.

The word 'selfie' was only announced as being the 'word of the year' by the Oxford English Dictionary in November 2013, while many people are increasingly comfortable using social media within their private lives, many businesses are still reluctant to put social media at the heart of their marketing strategy.

BIG Lunch success and the future of HADS

On the 1st June 2014 a BIG lunch was held on Cox park which attracted over 200 people. The BIG lunch is a community annual event which people come together to share lunch together.

The event started at 11:30am with the Diamond Lites Majorettes followed by a Magic and Punch & Judy show with Bryan Clarke AKA Professor Jingles.

Then followed the Elmsett Fellowship Brass Band which provided music for all ages then Bryan did another Punch and Judy show. Food was on offer to buy including freshly made pizzas and hot and cold drinks from Kate from Expresso coffee.

An ice cream van was also on hand to cool us all down with temperatures in the mid 20's one of the hottest days for the year. Local groups also had a chance to raise some funds and I would like to thank all the stall holders for taking part. Thanks to the Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce for supporting the event and to Brian Riley for using his funding from Suffolk county Council via the Locality Fund.

I was so impressed with all the great feedback from this event which I decided to do off my own back because i enjoy putting on events for the town. If you didn't know I have just taken over as chairman of HADS (Hadleigh Amateur Dramatics).

I feel that Hadleigh needs family events and I miss the yearly pantos which I used to love being involved with. In my vision I would like to a put on yearly pantos and talent shows and maybe a comedy night - not forgetting another BIG Lunch next year too. Howard at Greene King Brewery Hello dear Readers. This month the picture shows me at the Greene King Brewery in Bury St Edmunds. When my friends Mitch and Shaun at The Brewers on the 1071 at Polstead asked if my mother and I would like to join a tour of Greene King I was delighted to be able to take part.We ascended one hundred steps to the roof of the Brewery where we had fine views of Bury St Edmunds.I was quite amazed at the scale of the operation which produces three million pints a week and employs 22,000 people.

I am not a beer drinker but after the tour we enjoyed a smashing buffet and were able to taste the various beers.I started with the well known “Speckled Hen” which apparently derives its name as a result of a string of events at the MG factory.I know that many of you enjoy dinner at The Brewers at Polstead as indeed I do. I have recently returned from a voyage to Iceland and Norway.

I was so excited during our time off the Icelandic coast when a hump back whale soared out of the water just off the ship.The enormous whale slipped back down again and we saw that iconic tail disappear beneath the waves.In truth, I was not particularly taken with Iceland or Reykjavik which seemed to be particularly drab. Many years ago, I was initiated in the usual ceremony crossing the Equator.There were similar goings on as we crossed the Arctic Circle on this occasion.Of course in the Summer months, the sun hardly sets in that part of the world – quite a strange feeling.

It is fantastic driving or walking around the Suffolk countryside in early summer. Everything is so green, the uncut verges are fat grass pillows, stunning churches and fine old cottages line the village streets, or can be glimpsed between the trees. Our natural and built environment is really something to value and preserve.

I was therefore sorry that, although the commitment to being â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the greenest countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; remains, conservation of our natural and built assets did not feature in the County Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s headline priorities for the next three years that were announced at the annual meeting in May. One of these aspirations, the promotion of economic growth in Suffolk, would surely be undermined if, because we have not sustained the features that make our area uniquely attractive, visitors stop coming to spend money in our shops and hotels; or if owners of companies seeking a good quality of life locate elsewhere.

It was a consolation therefore to read about the successful launch of Suffolkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Nature Strategy at RSPB Minsmere in early June. Presented by Mark Bee, the Leader of the Council, the Strategy was positively endorsed by BBC Springwatch presenter Chris Packham as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;a highly intelligent way forwardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

The policy was planned over many months by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, the National Trust, the RSPB and Suffolk County Council. It recognises the importance of the natural environment in promoting economic activity and also social benefits such as the promotion of health and wellbeing. It is thought to be a truly innovative document and the first of its type in the UK. Related to the Strategy is the attention that is paid in Suffolk to our roadside verges. There are more than 4000 miles of road in Suffolk, of which 80% are classed as rural. It is now recognised that the verges offer important â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;corridorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for wildlife, migrating between different habitats. Additionally, in themselves they can be the home of rare plant species such as sulphur clover. There are now over 100 stretches of verge in the county that are designated as roadside nature reserves subject to special cutting regimes to ensure their ecological sustainability.

The event brings together coracle owners and the general public for a fun afternoon of racing, demonstrations and an opportunity to have a go handling one of these unusual craft. The ‘coraclers’ are kind enough not only to share their craft but also spend time explaining the best way of moving along the river. If you own a coracle but would prefer not to share it just bring it along and join in the fun.

People of all ages can have a go and some get wet! Life jackets are available and there are safety boats on hand.

Spectators are kept entertained throughout the afternoon by races such as the ‘Poachers Run’.

Light refreshments available from the friendly lavender ice cream man so you’ll only need to bring a picnic for something more substantial. There is no admission charge but donations are gratefully accepted!

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 We had a lovely surprise last month when pupils from Thomas Gainsborough School in Sudbury presented us with £72, raised by selling their own homemade cakes. Charlotte Ellis and her friends were charming (yes, they made a great fuss of me!) and a credit to their school when they visited the Sanctuary. We must also thank local supporter, Debbie Lock, who organised a Garden Party at Rouses Farm in memory of Dotty Lock. Over one hundred guests enjoyed games and competitions in perfect weather and some of my canine pals won places in the Dog Show. The event, held on 7th June when Dotty would have been seventy, raised £800 for SESAW. Sometimes the news is not so good, as was the case when the poor cygnet died (see separate article). I heard the volunteers say it was not an isolated case of wildlife suffering due to a human’s negligence. A few days later, Mum found another animal carrier dumped by the road outside SESAW. This time it was a young black cat, severely traumatised by the passing traffic. It would have been better to leave the box in clear view, rather than hidden behind the hedge.

Now, as promised last month, I’ll tell you about the dogs. Firstly Lexi is looking for a home again, another victim of changed circumstances. She is a lovely six year old Staffie who needs to be the only dog. Little Flossy, a white Jack Russell/Westie narrowly escaped being put down in a dog pound. She likes people and wants to be the only pet in her new home. Two year old Toby is hoping a family will come for him soon. He loves people, other dogs and walks.

He can’t help his Jack Russell/Staffie parentage and is really lonely since his canine pal, was rehomed. Ralphie, a Chihuahua cross, is less than a year old and needs an extra special home with one to one attention. They tell me he suffers with anxiety and it will be a long job but he will cope.

The bunting will be out again for our annual Fete, Fun Dog Show and Open Day on Sunday 27th July. All the usual attractions plus entertainment from local musicians, “Jazz Galore” will make the afternoon go with a swing. I’m very thirsty after all this dictating so I hope someone has saved a drop of tea for me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

by Sarah Thompson 2 tbsp caster sugar 1 pot of whipping cream (300ml/10.6 floz) Pre-heat the oven to 180 C. Line a standard cake tin.

1: Starting with the buttermilk (as the pot can then be used as a measure for the sugar & flour), empty it into a bowl, clearing the pot really well. Now add the sugar & give it a good stir.

2: Next add a little of the flour and the first egg,give it a beat, then a little more flour and the 2nd egg, again beat it. Add the baking powder to the remainder of the flour plus the pinch of salt, the 3rd egg goes in & then the flour-saltbaking powder mix.Give the whole mixture a really good beat.

3: Pour the cake mixture into a square cake tin. Now sprinkle the almonds evenly over the cake mix. Once done sprinkle the 2 tbsp of caster sugar on top of the almond layer.

4: Bake in the oven for 20-30 mins.The earliest to check with a skewer is after 20 minutes in the centre of the cake, return to the oven if needed for a little longer. The cake is done when the skewer comes out clean.

5: Once the cake is done, remove it from the oven and start ladling the whipping cream onto the top of the cake. Try & cover it evenly. Any `pooling` of cream around the edges is nothing to worry about as the cake will absorb the cream over the next couple of hours. You can either leave the cake on the kitchen worksurface to cool or return it to the now cooling down oven.

DO NOT PUT IT IN THE FRIDGE TO STORE !

I usually bake this 24 hours before I intend to serve it, as it gives the cake the time to really absorb the cream.

New Aquatics development for Bridge Farm Barns Exciting changes are happening to the aquatics shop at Bridge Farm Barns in Monks Eleigh. Bubble Aquatics has been taken over by Marine Reef, the marine Aquarium Specialists from Kirby Cross near Frinton. Kersey Mill Newsletter As another month goes by we have been blessed with some amazing weather that has allowed us to carry on with many different tasks at tut mill. The summer Ball that was arranged as a fund raising event was a great success and was very well attended and supported a very big thank you to all those that helped in so many different ways, your efforts helped raise over £2500. We have continued to have large numbers of visitors, with several WI groups, Long Melford Historical Society and other organisations visiting the mill, if you are part of a group and would like to arrange a visit then please do get in touch.

The previously mentioned work to the sluice gate has continued, with the shaft that lowers and raises the gate now repaired and back in its correct position, attached to the shaft are the original racks that having been repaired are now back in their correct location, they have a wonderful oak gate attached at the base of them that now works as originally intended allowing us to control the water to the wheel. What an amazing site to see something mechanical working, as far as we know the last time anything worked at the mill was about 100 years ago. The sluice gate is a tremendous weight when combined with the racks, yet with the gearing attached to the shaft its movement is achieved very little effort, a pleasurable experience. Pictured is the new Sluice gate and racks.

The better weather has allowed for the continuation of the works to the exterior of the mill with repairs to windows, guttering and weather boarding, although from a distance the mill exterior looks good its surprising how much repair is required, another year untouched would lead to major repairs being required.

A stitch in time!.

The wildlife seems much occupied with an amazing number of Water Vole having been seen recently swimming in the river together with a grass snake. The Kestrels eggs have hatched and from what we can see it looks like there are 4 young ones, that are keeping their parents very busy, kingfishers are dashing back and forth collecting fish feeding themselves and their brood the house martins, swallows and swifts are all at it too. Photograph is a Kestrel’s eye view and also that of a painter!

Mark Barnard of Suffolk Mills Group has worked incredibly hard to prepare an application for a small grant to Heritage Lottery Fund to help repair the water wheel and pit wheel, this would help tremendously and allow us to install railings, lighting and educational material for our visitors fingers crossed!

Frankie’s London2brighton challenge Having used the ‘London Marathon’ as a training run Frankie Dowie of Brett Green, Layham completed the 100km London2Brighton Challenge which took place on the 24th/25th May. Starting in London at lunchtime Saturday the route was on A, B and C roads and included muddy tracks and forest stages finishing Sunday morning in Brighton. Frankie (on the left in the photo) can be seen with fellow competitor Sammie Rogerson who comes from Leavenheath celebrating with a glass of Champers.The girls raised £1500 for their charities Sue Ryder and Macmillan.

It was with great pleasure that the Mayor, Councillor Brian Lazenby, presented the Town Mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Award to Mrs Barbara Boyd at the Annual Town Meeting on Thursday 24th April 2014. Mrs Boyd was chosen by the Mayor as she set up the Thrift Shop in the town which assists local organisations and also carries out a great deal of work in Albania.

Mrs Boyd thanked the Mayor on behalf of the Thrift Shop. It is lovely to know that the hard work and dedication of everyone involved has been recognised in this way. The shop will be fifteen years old this year and currently 25 people work there. The majority of the money raised is distributed locally with a 1/8th going towards helping children in Albania. This award will be appreciated by all concerned.

SKy Watch Comets Do any of you remember this spectacular comet from April 1997 ? This comet was named Hale-Bopp after its discoverers Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp and graced the northern hemisphere skies in the springtime of 1997 at a very bright magnitude of 0. The comet remained visible for 18 months at naked eye level, a record for a comet. comets are best described as the left over builders rubble of the Solar System which formed 4.5 billion years ago. They are best described as celestial dirty snowballs, being made of a mixture of rock, ice, and gases such as carbon dioxide. In the dark cold depths of space, the comet is no different in appearance to a asteroid, but once this dark body begins to draw toward the Sun a process begins to take place on this featureless lump , a process called sublimation. This is the process of Ice going straight from a frozen to a gas but without going through the liquid phase. This process leads to a atmosphere to form around the main body of the comet, or nucleus, this atmosphere is called, the coma. The dust released is very fine, about the same density of cigarette smoke. The Sun’s light is actually strong enough to push this dust away from the comet creating the dust tail which is shown beautifully as the white tail in the image above. Ultraviolet radiation from the Sun is absorbed by the gas released by the comet, this causes the molecules to produce a ionized molecular stream of particles. This is illustrated by the striking blue tail above which is the result of Sunlight fluoresing carbon monoxide. On any given night several comets can be seen, mostly by large telescopes, sometimes by binoculars and about once every 10 years a comet comes along like HaleBopp above. A comet orbits the Sun in various shapes of ellipse, the longer or more stretched out the ellipse the longer the period or time it takes to make one orbit of the Sun. Periodic comets circle the Sun in periods of between 3.3 yrs and <200 years. A classic example of a comet of this type is Halley's comet April text:Layout 1 11/3/14 08:56 Page 5 which most people would know, the period for this particular comet is 76 yrs.

Long period comets have orbits longer than 200 years, Hale-Bopp for example now has an orbit of 2,533 years. Some comets even get expelled from the Solar System altogether, destined to spend eternity wandering amongst the stars of our galaxy looking for a new home.

But comets that look so attractive do pose a threat to our very existence. 66 million years ago the K-T Impact Event wiped 2/3rds of the life of our planet out in one hit. Was it an asteroid or a comet? No one knows for sure the answer to this question but we know it happened. So, what would of happened if Hale-Bopp had of struck Earth? The estimated size of this comets nucleus is 35 km in diameter and contains en estimated 0.6g/cm3 which gives a mass of 1.3x10 19g. An impact velocity of 52.5 km/second would yield an impact energy of 1.9x10 32 ergs or 4.4x10,000,000,000 megatons which is 44 times stronger than the K-T Impact Event that wiped out the dinosaurs! Scary stuff, but rest assured this sort of event will not happen in our lifetime , comet HaleBopp passed a safe 93,000,000 miles from us.

Outdoor Theatre comes to the parks of West Suffolk this Summer!

Hadleigh & District Footpath Volunteers Our walk this month will be on Saturday 12th July. It will be a circular route starting and finishing at Hintlesham. We will leave Hadleigh by bus departing for the bus station at 9.30am (car park side). We will walk from Hintlesham through Burstall and Chattisham. There will be a refreshment stop at the Hintlesham George at the end of the walk. We will return to Hadleigh by bus arriving back at 1.42pm. This walk is 6.5 miles in length, and is suitable for most walkers, older children and your do. We recommend that strong shoes or walking boots should be warn as some of the paths are rough and wet in places.

Dogs die in hot cars - Why you should never leave your dog in the car unattended.

All dog owners within the UK are surely aware of the RSPCA’s “Dogs Die in Hot Cars” awareness campaign that runs every year to highlight the risks of leaving dogs closed in cars during the warmer months of the year. Nevertheless, every year, the RSPCA receives around 6,000 calls from concerned members of the public who find dogs left languishing inside of stuffy cars in the heat, and every year a significant number of dogs actually die from heatstroke or other complications as a direct result of being closed into a vehicle that rapidly overheats. It is more important than ever to be aware of the risks of leaving your dog in the car, and to understand the reasons behind why every year, dogs die in hot cars; and how to prevent it.

Why is leaving your dog in the car a problem? When the weather is hot outside, the temperature in a closed parked car is even hotter. Even when the outside temperature is just 20 degrees Celsius, the temperature inside of a closed car in the sun can rise to 45 degrees Celsius or even more in a matter of minutes. Dogs regulate their body temperatures by panting, and in a small enclosed space such as a car, a panting dog will simply not be able to get enough fresh air to keep their body temperature at a safe level. Dogs can become dangerously overheated inside of a vehicle (or a shed or any other enclosed space) within just a few minutes, potentially leading to dehydration, sunstroke, and even death. Dogs that are overweight, have a thick, heavy coat or have a squashed up face and brachycephalic muzzle will overheat faster than other dogs, no dog is immune to heatstroke when left in an overheating car.

Heatstroke in dogs The progression of heatstroke in dogs begins with heavy panting, excessive salivation and a raised pulse rate, and quickly progresses to lethargy, fainting or collapse and unconsciousness, eventually resulting in death if untreated. If you find that your dog or another dog is suffering from heatstroke, your immediate course of action should be to remove your dog to a cooler area and work on reducing their body temperature by offering water to drink and bathing them in cool but not cold water. You should also contact your vet for further advice, and take your dog to the vet immediately if they have passed out, become sick or lost control of their bowels or bladder, or do not begin to cool down and recover within a short space of time.

How long can I leave my dog unattended in the car for on a sunny day?

There is a really simple answer to this question, and that answer is “no time at all.” It is not safe to leave your dog unattended within a car for even a couple of minutes while you pop to a shop or run an errand. The temperature within a closed car without air conditioning will climb rapidly, even if parked in the shade, and heatstroke can occur within just a few minutes in this environment.

Is it ok to leave my dog in the car with a window open?

Many dog owners assume that they can counteract the onset of heatstroke and leave their dog in the car safely by leaving a window partially open or providing a bowl of water. This is not the case. An open window will not provide enough cooling or ventilation to keep the car cool for your dog, and a bowl of water may help to stave off the early stages of dehydration but it will do nothing to prevent heatstroke. Put simply, open windows, bowls of water, sunshades and other means of attempting to keep your dog and your car cool will not prevent the onset of heatstroke, or make your car any safer for your dog to be left alone in.

What to do if you see a dog closed inside of a car Hopefully by now all dog owners will understand why it is not appropriate to leave their own dogs unattended within a car, but what should you do if you spot a dog locked in an unattended car in hot weather?

• Your first course of action should be to try to find the owner of the car and the dog. If the car in question is parked at a supermarket or shopping centre, asking them to make a tannoy announcement to contact the owners of the vehicle is the first step to take.

• If the owners of the car cannot be contacted or do not return to the car quickly, contact the police as an emergency to attend the vehicle.

• If the police are unable to attend, contact the RSPCA’s cruelty line on 0300 1234 999.

• Where you stand legally if you break into a car to rescue an overheating dog is something of a grey area; you should not take any action to gain access to the car without first speaking to the police.

• Try to locate the owners and escalate procedures to have the dog removed from the car via the police and/or RSPCA as soon as you find a dog in a hot car. Even a dog that appears ok upon your arrival can quickly become distressed, and you should begin taking action to have the dog removed from the car as soon as possible to minimise the chances of this happening.

Dogs, hot cars and the law If a dog suffers or dies as a result of being left in a hot car, their owner or caregiver can be prosecuted for neglect or cruelty under animal welfare laws.

Successful prosecution for neglect or cruelty can lead to jail time, fines and being banned from keeping animals in the future.

Don’t leave your dog unattended in a car for any reason; it’s just not worth the risk.

Pupils visit to Bury St Edmunds Cathedral and Abbey Gardens (written by Holley Grimsey 7T) We really enjoyed the trip to Bury St Edmunds which turned out to be very educational as well as very interesting. We were amazed to see how big the Cathedral was and to learn that the original abbey was 7 times larger than the cathedral is today. The abbey tower was also 4 times taller. This was hard to imagine as when it was built, people did not have access to the technology that we have today. St. George is the patron saint of England, but he has not always had that title. Originally, the position was held by St. Edmund who gave his name to the Suffolk town of Bury St. Edmunds. We learned that St. Edmund was tied up by the Vikings and they threatened to kill him if he did not relinquish his Christian faith; he refused to do this and they proceeded to shoot him with arrows and then beheaded him. The legend says that the head was found being guarded by a wolf. St. Edmund’s body was put in a shrine in the abbey but there are no records of where his body is today. After St. Edmund died, people travelled miles to Bury St. Edmunds on pilgrimages to pray and hope for miracles. It is said that people’s sight returned and illnesses became cured. We enjoyed lunch which took place in the park. We would thoroughly recommend a trip to Bury St. Edmunds. Michael Anthony (7A) gave us an insight to what his personal thoughts were about the trip. “I thought that it was very educational and the Cathedral was very beautiful.” The Year 7 pupils were able to enjoy the day out in Bury St Edmunds, and we are glad the trip turned out to be such a success!

GCSE Art Exhibition On Thursday 5th June from 7-9 pm, the GCSE Art students’ work was exhibited at St Mary’s Church in Hadleigh. There was an impressive turn out, and along with the students and the families, both the mayor and local artist Susie Jenkins showed up to marvel at the excellence of Year 11 pupils’ work. This was the first time the exhibition had been held in the church, and it was a nice setting with a great atmosphere, it also allowed the work to be left in the church for a week after the initial viewing, allowing members of the public to see how talented the Year 11 Art students are. As well as the exhibition, GSCE music students Harry Planck, Shannon Leferve and Olivia Sherred and Year 9 pupil Jessica Simmons performed during the evening, and we were very grateful for their musical contribution.

There has been very positive feedback about all of the work, and many visitors were complimentary about the range of media displayed in the work. Art teacher Mrs Reed said, ‘I thought it was really successful and the art was of a great quality. The church also added to the feel of the evening’. We wish Year 11 the best of luck and hope they get the results that they deserve this summer!

Delve deeper into the plot Year 7 Reading Week commenced on May 19th, and throughout the week there were a variety of activities for the pupils to partake in. These included a visit from novelist, screenplay writer and actor Ciaran Murtagh. He shared his skills and expertise with Year 7 pupils, allowing them to learn how to write a captivating plot, as well as having to determine the outcome of a story. The workshops went down a storm, with Megan Barlow remarking that the day was, ‘hilarious with great advice for want-to-be writers’. In all lessons during this week, pupils have spent at least 10 minutes reading the book ‘The Demon Dentist’ by David Walliams and according to members of staff, they have found this book incredibly enjoyable. To top off this exceptional week, there was a non-uniform day, which allowed pupils to dress up as a book character of their choice. The Year 7 pupils were very imaginative, and characters included Doctor Who, Bilbo Baggins, Thor and ‘Thing 1 and Thing 2’ from Dr Seuss. Miss Watson, Librarian, commented that the pupils made a fantastic effort and really enjoyed getting into the role of their characters.

Brick by brick On the 12th June, a few Year 9 students went to Otley College to get a flavour of post 16 courses available. George Mann said, “Construction at Otley is very good, ranging from building brick walls to plumbing. Otley Collage is a great place to study construction and the college is very friendly and welcoming.” Another Year 9 student, Jack Stone, said, “We went to Otley 20

to experience the construction course as we are going to do this next year. We were shown how to lay bricks by a man called Ian and then had a go ourselves, laying the bricks in a pyramid shape. After lunch, we were shown how to wire a plug and we did some plumbing. We had a great day.”

Every cloud has a silver lining Miss Wing, the co-ordinator of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Hadleigh High School, organized the Silver Award at the school. Twenty one students will undertake the expedition part of the award in the Peak District and will walk 35km over 3 days, camping for 2 nights, and will have to carry all the equipment and food they will need for the duration of the expedition. They will also need to have completed 6 months of voluntary work, 6 months on either physical activity or a skills activity and 3 months on the other. All of these students have nearly completed their physical, skill and volunteering sections, and after having all previously completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh, they know what standards are expected from them during the Silver expedition. The qualifying expedition will take place from 7th-10th July, and we wish everybody undertaking the task the best of luck.

Enrichment We are very excited as Enrichment Week approaches. Year 7 are getting their camping gear ready as they prepare for their camping trip to Mersey. Not only is their trip going to be buckets of fun but the challenges it will present will develop Year 7’s confidence and encourage teamwork. Isla RomerLee tells us that she is hoping to gain good co-operation skills as well as having a blast with her friends. All of the year 7 community are looking forward to their week away! Year 8s also have some fantastic opportunities in store, and are off on a medieval adventure, where they will be split into groups and separated to explore different medieval time periods. Jared White and Cerys Long both told us that they were really looking forward to this activity and are hoping to gain some good teamwork skills. We spoke to Year 9 pupils who are looking forward to a week in paradise (a.k.a the Ardeche)! Jess Simmons and Jasmine Robinson both told us that they were excited about the trip and have been counting down the days until they leave! Natalie Hills has told us that the year pupils are looking forward to finally getting a tan! We hope all the Year 9s have a fun time in the Ardèche! A couple of the Year 9 pupils have been lucky enough to gain places on the St Omer trip, again in sunny France! The pupils will be going on a battlefield tour and visiting the wonderful sea-life centre! Sean Davies said he was particularly looking forward to visiting the battlefield. We are waiting with anticipation until we can hear their stories!

Finally last, but definitely not least, our Year 10 pupils are taking their next big step in life and are completing two weeks of Work Experience. Megan Bennett, who is taking part in Work Experience and is at a placement at Hintlesham Hall tells us that she is looking forward to the experiences of working in an adult environment. We wish all of Year 10 the best of luck!

MFL Day On Tuesday 17th June Hadleigh High School invited 176 Year 4 students up for the day to participate in a cross curricular Modern Foreign Languages Day. Students learnt about the history of the French speaking world as well as how to shop at a market in France and decorate cupcakes with a French twist. This is the second year we have hosted the Year 4s from our feeder primaries for the MFL themes day.

London Greenwich Millennium Village Trip Recently, our Year 10 GCSE geography students attended a 2 day trip to London to assist with their upcoming coursework based on sustainability. During one day they visited the Greenwich Millennium Village which prides itself on sustainability where they worked as teams to complete and collect their data for their coursework which accounts for 25% of their final grade. Miss Rowland, a Geography teacher, said, “The trip went well and we were lucky to have nice weather on both days.

Whilst we were on the outing we also visited the Crystal exhibition and went on cable cars across the Thames which had some lovely views as it was such a nice day.” Miss Woolven, our Subject Leader for Geography, who attended the outing, remarked that it was a fantastic day and everyone was superbly behaved. She said, “Personally, I really enjoyed the Crystal museum especially as it was interactive which gave a new and modern feel to the exhibition.” Livi Player and Ellen Seeley, who attended the trip, agreed that it was a fun day, especially the cable cars and we were really lucky to have such good weather.

We would all like to thank everyone who helped organise the trip as it was such a successful day. We would also like to wish good luck to our Geography students on their upcoming controlled assessment.

Prefect interviews Recently our hopeful and ambitious students had their interviews for prefect leaders. Everyone who participated was very well prepared and possessed lots of valuable skills. One Year 10 student said, “I was really nervous about the interview, but when it was my time, I just forgot about it and went for it!” With the last of the interviews happening this week all of the students are keen to hear who the future prefects and leadership team will be. With such a fantastic range of interviewees we know that the decision of who will be a member of the Pupil Leadership Team will be a hard one. Fundraising Fanatics The Jazz Night on the 21st June in Bildeston’s St. Mary’s church featured Hadleigh High School’s ‘Soul Band’ who was performing to help raise funds for the B Natural Festival taking place this summer.

SWISS Student Leadership Conference - Report by Matthew Smith On 13th June, 12 of the new Year 9 Junior Prefects went to Ipswich Town Football Club for the ‘SWISS Student Leadership Conference.’

The theme of the conference was ‘developing student leadership’ and ‘raising aspirations in others’. We had a quick introduction and ice breaker before being split into 6 groups and being sent to an area to work on a task that would show who was brave enough to put themselves forward to lead, and who was brave enough to feedback to the other groups. Then for the rest of the day we had a carousel of three activities: One where we had to use our leadership skills to solve difficult scenarios put forward to us; another where we looked at how utilising the different skills of people in your team to become the most effective team you can; and finally an activity where we discussed the different leadership opportunities existing in our own schools so we could consider taking new ideas back and suggesting them at our own schools.

We completed the experience in our own school where we fed back what we had learnt before a conclusion session where we told the other schools what we had spoken about in our school group. The day was great fun, and we are looking forward to using some of the techniques we have learned.

Support our Fete!

On Saturday 5th July, 11am – 3pm, Year 10’s will be running the annual fete which was previously postponed due to bad weather. All Year 10’s involved with the organizing have been rushed off their feet trying to get it perfect in time. Mrs Calvino and Mrs Hitchcock-Brown have played a massive part in helping the students to prepare the fete. Stalls will include Archery, live music, a BBQ and the auctioning of a go kart! Mrs Calvino said: “Everything is going well and I’m pleased with the progress that Year 10’s are making.” We all hope you can make it and help support our fete. Recently, pupils have been handing out leaflets in Hadleigh’s Morrisons store to help advertise the fete, and there have been cake stalls to help fundraise; the latest raised is £52!

Students are raising money through the fete for the 6 charities linked to the Hadleigh High Houses. They are: Hadleigh Thrift shop, EACH, Ormiston Family Trust, East Anglian Air Ambulance, Home Start and Suffolk Family Carers.So, if you are able to, please come along to support these fantastic causes.

Whatfield Village Fete The annual village Fete will be held Saturday 5th July 2014 from 1pm-5pm. A fun-filled family day with something for everyone including Children's 5-a-side Football Tournament, Produce and Competition marquee plus the traditional stalls and games including the Tug of War. Get a team together and come and join us for a great afternoon of fun! There will also be a bouncy castle, displays from Fun Dancing and even a working miniature model railway!

Friars Hall Nursing Home This spring has certainly been an exciting one. We welcomed our new matron Deborah Nicklin. We had a visit from Zoo Lab. None of us were too sure about some of the animals like the snakes, spiders and a rat, but we found we liked them at the end.

The star of the show was the little hedgehog. Our dementia garden is being extended to include an aviary as well as a viewing area for the fish pond all under cover of our very own vine. We are holding a competition to name our new bird friends and having a tea party to welcome them. Cheerio from now all the residents and staff at Friars Hall.

Hadleigh Thrift Shop Limited We have recently joined forces with Tools for a Mission, a local charity based in Ipswich that does wonderful work, particularly in Africa. There will be around 30,000-40,000 people camping in Japan next year, and whilst we are out there we will be participating in the 70th Peace Anniversary in Hiroshima and service projects in nearby villages.

Greenscape Energy - Success at The Suffolk Show It’s that time of year again when Solar PV Panels are really working well. With the long summer days the Solar Panels start producing power before 5am and carry on working right through till well after 9pm. It is over these months you will see your highest energy production and therefore greatest savings and income from the feed-in tariff.

It is also the time of the year when local shows are taking place. We were at the Suffolk Show again this year and with some help from Enphase we had a considerably larger display stand. As can be seen in the pictures, we built a full-sized roof, complete with an ‘in-roof’ Solar PV system which proved to be a popular attraction, as were the variety of panels that we had on display for people to take a closer look at.

Along with the different solar panels and “in-roof” mounting solar system, we were busy showcasing the Enphase Microinverters. Enphase is the global leaders in Microinverter technology.

We had the added expertise of Chris May from Enphase with us on our stand for both days, showing the commitment being made by both Enphase and Greenscape Energy to supply our customers with the best equipment and service available.

We were pleased to be sharing the stand with our electrical partners AA Electrical of Ipswich, who were showcasing some of their own energysaving products, such as underfloor heating and air source heat pumps.

It meant that we were able to illustrate to people some of the many options available to help reduce their fuel bills as the cost of energy continues to rise.

It was particularly lovely to see some of our existing customers from across East Anglia at the Suffolk Show. We bumped into quite a few people from the Hadleigh and Sudbury area, that we have already installed a solar system for.

It was fantastic to hear about how happy they were with the savings they had made on their utility bills so far, along with the payments that they had received from the Feed-in Tariff. We pride ourselves on having a superb relationship with all our customers. Which seemed evident in the way so many of you came over to catch up with us, and to see how the business was growing, we thank you for that. Whatfield CEVCP School What a really busy time we have been having at Whatfield CEVCP School. As readers may know, we are a very small school less than 2 miles from Hadleigh, and are known for having a ‘can do’ attitude. Our pupils are lucky enough to be able to participate in a huge range of activities which many of them would not get a chance to do in a large school. They are resilient and able to accept both winning and losing gracefully. However, it was fantastic to see them getting to the tag rugby finals at Stowmarket Rugby Club in the Spring. One of the year five boys told me that he thought it was because he had been playing against year six from other schools over the last two years, so perhaps the participation paid off!

We have had a wide range of sporting success over the last few months, with a year 3 and 4 team getting to the semi-finals for mini-tennis, and eight of our best swimmers taking part in the schools version of the Great East Swim.

Possibly our proudest moment was taking part in the 2014 Quad kids competition, with Harry being chosen to run with the queens baton, alongside Louise Jukes who was part of the first ever GB Handball team at the Olympics.

We also had a chance for the team to meet our most successful gymnast at the London Olympics, Beth Tweddle.

This was a fantastic opportunity for some of our pupils to meet a renowned gymnast, since they have been working in PE with Kelly Mires, and have improved their skills throughout this year. I am sure she was very impressed by our teams tumbling ability!

Key Stage 2 had a fantastic time at the biannual residential trip to Sizewell Hall. This year we visited with Kersey school, and the two schools got along famously. They enjoyed a whole series of exciting outdoor opportunities, orienteering and archery, bridge building and bouldering. They made new friends, and grew in independence and tolerance as well as increasing their understanding of the lives of children in other parts of the world.

However the highlight was staying in the African huts for the last night. As a consequence of our visit, CYM have donated a water filter to help a family in Africa, and the children who went on the residential have some ideas for fundraising to provide another family with one too.

Orchard Barn wins Big Lottery Award We are thrilled to be able to announce that we have been granted funds under the Awards for All scheme which will enable us to build a boardwalk into the orchard, improving access for all our visitors. We are planning to achieve this by means of a series of monthly 2-day FREE Community Workshops, on the last Friday/Saturday of each month for six months. We will be making a fence in the form of gate hurdles, which will be constructed from locally sourced ash poles, and teaching green woodworking, including opportunities to use a froe, draw knife, shave horse and pole lathe. Whether you are a seasoned volunteer with us, or have never tried your hand before, you are invited to join us for these workshops. You do not have to commit to attending all 12 days, but we would ask that you set aside a minimum of 4 days over the whole six month period. The first is on 27th and 28th June, so may have already taken place by the time you read this piece, but the next will be 25th/ 26th July. All days will run from 9.30am to 4pm and you will need to book with Sarah – see below.

Our volunteers have been very busy recently using their green woodworking skills to make 2 benches, constructed using traditional techniques without nails or screws. Local oak was used for the seats, home-grown elm for the legs and unique shaped backs from our own cherry plum and maple. These were showcased at Weird & Wonderful Wood in May, so if you were there you may have seen them.

For those who did not attend, one is shown in the photo. These benches are for sale to help us raise funds, so if you would like a special piece for your garden, do get in touch.

We continue to run our volunteer days every Wednesday, and welcome newcomers. If you would like to help with the conservation of the barn and surrounding orchard, please call or email Sarah (see below). We try to arrange lifts for those who do not have transport.

Ancestral Anglia - A Presentation

by Ancestral Voices Little Waldingfield History Society was delighted to welcome Ancestral Voices, a collaborative project between Sarah Doig, Tony Scheuregger and Jane Scheuregger, to St Lawrence Church on a lovely summerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s evening on Wednesday 14th May. We were also exceedingly pleased with the turnout, more than 80 members and non members alike, who were royally treated - Ancestral Voices were quite simply superb. By combining music with the spoken word, Ancestral Voices aim to tell a story with each of their concerts and Ancestral Anglia was an historical journey in words, images and music from the beginning of the sixteenth century up to the early 1700s. It was a real celebration of our region's rich cultural heritage through the eyes of visitors such as Will Kemp, a Shakespearean comic actor, and writer and journalist Daniel Defoe (of Robinson Crusoe fame). East Anglia's royal connections were also explored, including the effect Henry the Eighth had on the region through the dissolution of the monasteries and the summer progress made by his daughter Queen Elizabeth the First in 1578.

It is fair to say the audience were spellbound throughout a combination of great research by the players, amazing images on the big screen, authentic music brilliantly played along with a wonderful atmosphere in our delightful church all combined to produce just the right ambience. The choice of illustrations, the contemporary readings and the sheer quality of the accompanying music, played on a bewildering array of period instruments were truly excellent - it really was a superbly researched programme wonderfully presented. We canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wait until we invite Ancestral Voices back for another of their tremendous presentations - watch this space.

On another happy note, Society Trustees opened an advance order book for â&#x20AC;&#x153;Little Waldingfield - Our Village History From 1840 to 2014â&#x20AC;?, during the evening. Our book is the culmination of a Heritage Lottery Funded â&#x20AC;&#x153;All Our Storiesâ&#x20AC;? project and will soon be available to buy (ÂŁ18.00 softback and ÂŁ30.00 hardback). All proceeds from this 350 plus page full colour book will go towards preserving the fabric of St Lawrence Church, and it is great to report that we have got off to a good start. Somehow the book survived, and Pip will take us through the records and enthrall us with his piercing insight to this far away time. We hope to see many of you there.

New meets the old in Lavenhamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s visitor phone app.

Lavenham in Suffolk, often described as Englandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finest medieval village, has moved firmly into the 21st century with the conversion of one of its BT phone boxes to a WIFI hot spot and the introduction of a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;phone app for visitors. The app, which is free to download, includes an interactive map with pictures, text and an audio guide to 16 of Lavenhamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more interesting properties. Did you know for example that Jane Taylor, the write of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;twinkle twinkle little starâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lived in Lavenham or that the first Governors of Connecticut and Massachusetts both lived in what was the Old Grammar School, afterwards attended by the painter John Constable? Bear baiting continued well into the 19th century in the Market Place and the Swan Hotel once had stabling for 50 horses and a twice weekly coach service to London.

Farewell Party at Angel Court Community Wellbeing Centre On Wednesday 18th June, a farewell party was held at Angel Court Community Wellbeing Centre in Hadleigh. All the customers were invited, Hadleigh Community Transport/E.C.Cars and families provided the transport, they all arrived at 10.30am. With the staff in place, the Entertainment started at 10.45, with â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Lindy Louâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; singing all the old songs for the next hour, customers and staff all joined in with the singing. At 12.00 noon fish and chips arrived from Grays Fisheries, ready for the customers lunch, which was enjoyed by all.

In the afternoon invited guests arrived to say goodbye to Angel Court Community Wellbeing Centre. Barbara Boyd, Joan and Darrell from The Thrift Shop arrived, a vote of thanks from myself (Pauline Scott) was given to Barbara and her team to thank them for all their support The Thrift Shop has given us over the last 10 or more years.

The cheques that we have received monthly have gone towards customers transport and trips out over the years, many thanks from us all. Also I would like to thank Graham Rolfe and David Stiff for their cheques from Sudbury and District Bar Billiards League, thanks boys. The buffet was laid on for our guests and customers by Maria Shimmon (cook) who has for the last few years been a delight to work with us as a colleague. She has always gone the extra mile for our customers and presented some fantastic meals, thank you Maria. The customers had a great time, two customers gave thanks to the staff for all our hard work and for giving them a great farewell party.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my staff Helena Marsh and Susan Barrett, Support workers at the centre for supporting me throughout, it will be a sad day to see Angel Court close, but we must look to the future. If I have forgotten anybody I do apologise now, but I have had 13 lovely years at Angel Court CWB Centre and from all of us all big thank you to the folks of Hadleigh for supporting our centre.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club The first of our summer visits on 9th June, saw us head to Blacksmiths Cottage Nursery for a return visit to this inspiring concern led by that indefatigable young man, Ben Potterton, and his tiny team of dedicated conservationists. Once again it was a revelation to learn of his enormous work load they put into this project, Ben himself appears to pack thirty hours of work into every day and eight days into every week, a positive powerhouse of energy. It appears that most weeks he is either delivering, mainly birds, to or from all parts of Europe, including Russia, or picking them up to bring back for breeding programmes. The Nursery is run as a partner nursery of the Royal Horticultural Society, so obviously the stock he sells is excellent, at the same time working in conjunction with zoological collections in the U.K. and Europe, participating in a selection of breeding programmes, studbooks and donating surplus animals to other like minded institutions.

Of course a large part of the charm of the place is that most of the ducks, geese and especially cranes just nest were they like amongst the herbaceous plants and wander around and this year a good few had their babies with them, agh! Then of course there are the Alpacas, all five had just dropped their offspring, so we weren't able to get too close to them. Ben did point out that there had been a conscious decision not to allow them to breed this year, so he is still trying to find out who allowed the male in to the wrong paddock whilst he was away on one of his trips!!

After our guided tour he took us into the cafe part of the complex and treated us to a terrific ploughman's and no ordinary ploughman's either. As it was a buffet you could have what you liked, masses of beautiful local ham, turkey and cheeses not to mention fantastic meat pies etc salads and followed by seasonal fruits - all in all, another memorable visit, highly recommended.

Our other summer visit will be on 13th August when we are to visit the late Geoff Hamiltons' T.V. Gardens, now run by his son which comprises 39 gardens, set in 8 acres and is near Rutland Water. We are also visiting members gardens in July. Monthly meetings recommence in the Town Hall in September.

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts I am writing this in the middle of the frantic rush to get the garden in a fit state to leave it and go on holiday. The main problems are getting everything planted firstly because it needs doing, and secondly because it simplifies the job for the person who kindly looks after my greenhouse for me.

The second problem is weeds. The rain at the end of May got the plants growing nicely, but I think the weeds grew even faster. This year with the problems we had in February I have had to recruit someone to help with the weeding, and with her help things are looking a lot better. I am hoping the garden will look reasonable on the 5th of July for Hadleigh Open Gardens Day. Hadleigh Garden Club paid a return visit to Blacksmiths Cottage Nursery at Langmere Norfolk on the 9th of June. This gave me another chance to look at their approach to weed free gardening. The approach is simple pack the plants so close together that there is no room for weeds. They limit the planting to bulbs and perennials. The perennials are selected to give a continuous display of flower through the summer. In late Autumn they are cut to the ground so that in the Spring the snowdrops and other early flowering Spring bulbs can give a display. As the season advances these are covered up by the perennials. I would like to try this approach on one of the beds in my garden, but it requires a great deal of planning of the plant selection in getting the flowering times, colours, and heights right if it is going to work I would not claim that my garden is fully "Organic", but I do try to base my gardening on organic principles. I shall have some literature from "Garden Organic" available for those who visit me on the 5th of July.

Most of this fell in the last week of the month. The wettest May since I have been writing this column was in 2006 when we had 122mm. The 3 monthly total at the end of May was 122 mm (4.8") which is still a bit lower than the average. In May the maximum temperature was 23 Cel (73F) which is slightly cooler than average for the month, and the minimum temperature for May was 2 Cel (36F) which is typical. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 17 Cel (63F), which is very warm for mid June, but was measured after a sequence of hot days..

Hints By July if you grow vegetables you should be enjoying the fruits of your labour. All the traditional crops will have been sown, but now is the right time to sow some of the Chinese vegetables like Chinese cabbage, and mizuna.

These are two that I like, but there are a number of others. Why not experiment? This month keep your secateurs with you as you inspect your garden and systematically dead head flowers as they go over. In many cases you will be rewarded by more flowers. July is a good month for cutting and drying herbs and lavender for winter use. The lavender should be cut just before the flowers are fully open. It is also a good month for lifting and dividing Irises that have flowered. Select the biggest single rhizomes for replanting, and cut half of the leaves off. Do not plant too deeply. The tops of the rhizomes should be above the soil. The old garden books suggest mid July as the time to start spraying potatoes against blight. Unfortunately there are not many controls still available to the amateur. It also affects tomatoes so be vigilant.

Recently, I had a phone call from BBC Radio Suffolk with a request to join their morning ‘phone-in’. They wanted to know what I thought about a beach hut in Southwold going on the market for £100,000. Being the church responsible for the Storehouse foodbank they probably thought I’d be up for a bit of an ‘argy bargy’. “This is how to ignite a news story,” I am told by a journo mate of mine. Alas! I was unable to make the time, but it did make me think about the beach hut. It is in the most desirable part of Southwold, situated south of the pier on the widest part of the promenade. And because properties like this don't come up every day the price naturally gets hiked up. But if you are stirred to own a shed with a view, you’ll need to read the small print carefully. There is only room for four people and no running water. You’ll also have to use the public conveniences just like everyone else. On top of that, you can only have it on a 30-year lease from the council. Plus, there’s an additional £720 to pay in annual rent. And if you were thinking of it being a bijou second home, forget it. You’re not permitted to sleep in the hut. Still interested? Well, amazingly, some people are.

Of course, you might well ask, like me, “Who in their right frame of mind would want to shell out for a seaside shed with just enough room for your bucket and spades and a bottle of red?” It’s all a matter of perspective, I guess. Some might argue that such people with wealth help to keep the local economy going. However, it does jar with the fact that 25 miles down the road in Ipswich you can buy a two-bedroom flat for around £100,000. And you can sleep in it!

Interestingly, in the same hour I was contacted via tweet by Housing Justice, a charity that provides a voice for homeless people, inviting me to attend their conference in Rayleigh, Essex. It’s an organisation that tackles issues such as the lack of decent, affordable housing and gives practical ideas to churches and community groups to help them make a difference in their neighbourhoods. Brilliant!

In an age where there is increasing disparity between regions and generations, along with sweeping benefit changes, bedroom tax and unregulated private rental market, I am glad Housing Justice exists. I think I would like to share a 99p flake with their chief exec on Southwold pier.

Jesus, himself, had something to say on property ownership: He said that "foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." The point I believe Jesus was perhaps making was not about the virtue of being homeless, but the high moral and spiritual price tag that comes with chasing the ‘idols’ of wealth, success and social status. They can rob us of the simple things that really matter and cause us to lose a heavenward perspective that God gives us in himself. CS Lewis said, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” Now, I don't know, but the beach hut buyer could turn out to be a rich philanthropist who gives away vast swathes of their income to charity. And if they do we might want to quickly revise our view of them. Not least, if our own giving to good causes is a little suspect. And, beside, if they did want to spend a £100,000 on a hut with a sea view, let them!

But, as with the joyously sounding name of the beach hut itself, ‘Happy Days’, I can only imagine that the estate agents are seeing this as a vintage summer.

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre After five years David Mills is stepping down from writing Ebony’s Blog. Our grateful thanks to him for giving us insight into aspects of life at The Shelley Centre with each monthly issue. It will be my pleasure to ‘take up the reins’.

The Hadleigh Show on May 17th was a glorious day. The Shelley Centre provided their annual stall selling gifts, lucky dip, plants, preserves and numerous homemade cakes. Our thanks to all those who contributed to this most successful fundraising event.

The impressions of a first time visitor to the Shelley Centre After an enthusiastic description from a friend about the work of the Shelley Centre, I simply could not turn down an invitation to visit. Having set off I found myself in the back of beyond and was glad I wasn’t driving and having to find my own way. On arrival at the Centre my first impression was it was bigger than expected, once through the imposing entrance I was greeted by a lot of activity in the very impressive yard.

I was soon introduced to Helpers, the Instructors of the day and the Stable Manager all who greeted me most warmly. The enthusiasm shown by the Instructors, when explaining the activities of The Centre, was just the same as my first introduction about their work. Later I was taken to watch some of the children riding. Because of their various physical problems some of the riders had three helpers, one leading the pony and one on each side. Other more competent riders only had a pony leader. It was with great surprise that I saw the transformation that came over these young riders once they were mounted.

They seemed to be freed from their problems and able to just concentrate on riding, what a wonderful sight. It was only when the children dismounted that one could see the many problems they had. Although it was a cold day I am sure they did not notice the cold as much as I did. For me the most amazing time spent at The Centre was when I went into the Quiet Room that contained Ebony the mechanical horse. There I met a Child of 5yrs old called Star, with her mother. Star clearly had a lot of problems. When lifted from her wheelchair onto Ebony, with the Instructor sitting behind her, Star did assisted exercises, with the mechanical horse moving at walk. The transformation was clear. It was simply amazing and is something that has had a long lasting impression, Finally I have to say that the work carried out by all involved at The Centre is quite staggering and for me a day to remember.

If you have a chance to visit The Shelley Centre do so, it is a very special place. Anyone who would like to volunteer will find the work very enjoyable and experience great satisfaction. Also if you wish to donate please go to the website for this and lots more information about The Centre.

My first day’s fishing!

On a Sunday morning I awoke happily knowing it was the day I was going fishing. Excitedly I ran down the stairs and a few minutes later Daddy woke up and immediately said said “let’s get moving”! I walked to the utility room where my rod was stored, it was very dusty and covered in clothes ready to put in the washing machine. Then Daddy picked up all the bait which were maggots in a box. Here is a list of our equipment, Maggots, Rod, Weights, Bait Pellets, Landing Net, Food, Tackle Box, Line, Disgorger, a Depth Weight, Floats and Hooks. When we arrived at a place called Lake Side which is a fishing spot, there was a fishing match going on so we had to keep out of the way. It turned out our line was like cable and didn’t sink instead it coiled up on the surface of the lake. Luckily a nice man gave us some of his line, we then said “thank you” and moved on and began. In a few minutes we got a few bites, then the float went under which meant the fish had the bait in its mouth. I reeled it in so fast that I thought its head might come off! When it was safely in the net Daddy took a picture of the fish which was a big Roach. I was very happy and excited. We let the greasy fish go. We cast the line out in the same place as before, and hour later we got a few more bites. Then the float went under the water, suddenly I reeled the fish in quickly.It was quite big, but not as big the first one. I was very pleased Daddy was pleased too!

Daddy cast the line and got it caught up in a over hanging branch but eventually we got it out of the tree and cast it back in to the water where we caught the last fish. A long time later we got a few nibbles. Then nothing happened then I got bite and the float went under. I reeled it in it was quite a small fish so we let it go. By the end of the day we caught 12 fish.

The Madrid golfer revealed he had been thinking of the late Ballesteros throughout the last day which eventually saw him edge out Steen Tinning by two strokes after the Dane had initially carved out a four shot lead in the early part of the round. Luna picked up four birdies on the front nine and the horse loving golfer reeled in Tinning with birdies on 12 and 14 before galloping clear with that decisive eagle on 16 as he finished on 14-under-par, two clear of Tinning and four clear of Mark Mouland who also had a 64. Victory secured Luna his second European Senior Tour title after pipping Sam Torrance to the Scottish Senior Open last year and he pocketed a cheque for €37,000 of the total 235,000 euro pot. “I was definitely thinking of Seve over certain shots today,” said Luna. “It’s unbelievable to win such a prestigious tournament as this. I played great, with few mistakes and tried to be in the right place and make a few putts and that was the key.”

This exciting finish concluded a very successful 4 days at Stoke by Nayland and the one hour highlights of each day were televised on Sky Sports TV. The event was also featured on both BBC Look East and ITV Anglia news, and in the local press.
