The Hadleigh Rotary Club needs you.....

Many residents of Hadleigh and surrounding villages are probably not aware that the Lions and the Round Table Clubs have had to close due to the lack of members. These two clubs were very community minded and the members gave up their time to help those who were in need by direct assistance or by raising funds to donate to local, national and international good causes. The Hadleigh Rotary Club is still continuing that very charitable work but, unfortunately, is on the same route as the other clubs if it cannot attract new active members.

Generally, the perception of the Rotary Organisation is that it is for older men and women and is steeped in rules, regulations and requires an unreasonable commitment. The truth is that Rotary has relaxed many regulations and is a much more relaxed and informal organisation these days. True, the Hadleigh Club's membership is getting on a bit, but that's why it needs younger members who can, in due course, decide on the club's structure, programme, aims, type of meeting and venue.

Recently, Rotary has introduced an addition category of membership that enables potential members to gain a ‘taste’ of the Club before actually

committing to full membership. This is called an Associate Membership (AM) and would give the AM a way of finding out about The Rotary Organisation as well as the local Club. There is also a great deal of information on the internet.

The Club meets every Thursday evening (sometimes at lunch time in the winter) at 7pm for a three course dinner and coffee at 7.30pm. You’ll find us informal, friendly and ready to answer all your questions. Two and sometimes three times a month the Club invites a guest speaker and members’ partners are invited to appropriate talks. A summary of the Club’s speakers appears in “Rotary Review” each month in Community News. There are a number of social events and outings for both members and partners throughout the year as well as fund raising activities.

So, if you feel that you would like to make some new friends, enjoy good fellowship and do something to help those less fortunate than yourself, why don't you take a look at Rotary by coming along to a meeting. You can do that by calling either of the following numbers.

176th Hadleigh Show Saturday 16th May 2015 Plans are well underway for this year’s Hadleigh Show which will, once again, be held in the beautiful parkland setting of Holbecks Park; so put the date in your diary and come along and join the family fun!

This year we are pleased to be supporting the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep project so look out for all things woolly on the showground.

The Sheep Show will be returning with the famous dancing sheep and down in the Countryside Ring Hadleigh Sea Scouts and Hadleigh Young Farmers will be staging “I’m a Sheep Get Me Out of Here” - look out for more details over the next few months. There are over 150 classes for horses, sheep, cattle and goats. If you are interested in entering you will find the schedule on our website. Entry prices remain the same as in 2014 and parking is free. Tickets will be available online at www.hadleighshow.co.uk or from local outlets shortly.

News from Whatfield School We celebrated the new term with a visit from a planetarium, as well as a night time walk with soup made from vegetables picked from our allotment, including some fantastic pumpkins. You can see some pictures of the making of some delicious pumpkin soup, inspired by the book by Helen Cooper, which is a particular favourite of Class One. We are so grateful to the grandparents who help us to tend the vegetables in our lovely allotment.

It was great to be involved in the campaign and celebrations for the Suffolk village of the year. This was due to a lot of hard work on the part of villagers, in particular Mrs Landon. Apparently our school representatives impressed the judges enormously, and they were invited to help receive the cheque on behalf of the village. Parents often say that the nurturing environment of a small school can help children develop self-confidence and belief which may be more difficult in a larger setting, and our representatives demonstrated the truth of that!

We have been so pleased to manage to regain our Philippino hut, which we use as an outside classroom, a play area and a bird hide! Last winter, in the dreadful storms, we lost the hut which had stood on our field for the last five years. It had blown into the surrounding trees, and was too broken to mend or use, so had to be taken down.

We have finally managed to replace it, and I am pleased to include a photo of some of our children with Mrs Cross, a great friend to the school, and the person who originally obtained the grant from the Arts council for the hut. She officially the first grown up to sit in it again!

We also celebrated a one hundred year anniversary. As a church school we were part of the parade at the cathedral in Bury St Edmunds to celebrate the centenary of the diocese, under our school banner.

Bygone Exhibition Sunday 15th February Long Melford Village Hall Refreshments Available

Bildeston Waytes Carol Concert Once again the residents of Bildeston dug deep into their pockets at the annual Bildeston Waytes Carol Concert and raised an amazing £1,350 for our chosen charity, Jessie’s Fund.

Founded by Maurice Ratliff and now in its 34th year the Waytes brings together orchestral players and singers from the village and the surrounding area. They met on 22nd December for a brief rehearsal with conductor Ian McCrae before the doors were opened to a capacity audience who, as always, participated with great enthusiasm. The festive atmosphere was enhanced with humorous encouragement from Ian, who returns to his native area for the Waytes each year, and organiser Nansi Browne, and whilst the old traditional carols are popular there is enthusiasm for the less familiar as well. This year a family trio of Glynis, Polly and Kate Huggett sang an old Wexford carol which was moving in its simplicity and performance. We are grateful to Ian; Nansi; participating musicians and singers; the bar staff at the Chamberlain Hall; the Crown Hotel for serving a splendid supper for performers; and to the audience for their generosity in supporting Jessie’s Fund for the third consecutive year.

Jessie’s Fund provides musical instruments and music therapy to children with terminal or life-limiting illness in children’s hospices and special schools throughout the UK and our donation is raised through a retiring collection and the surplus on ticket sales.

Whatfield CEVCP School 12 month fundraiser Another month gone by and my goodness have some miles been covered by Gary Cotter. You may recall in the last article Gary was running in the dark and this has continued. He just about had time for two days off over Christmas and New Year and then it was straight back to training. The mileage Gary has covered has been breathtaking (literally)!! Covering an average of 50 miles per week which is training over 3 nights and 1 over the weekend, which shouts Marathon ready to me. Broken down this is three 10 mile runs and then a long run at the weekend. To keep motivation up and company for our runner he has a training partner Karl who I am sure has thoroughly enjoyed all the cold and wet mornings over the last month.

We are looking for as many sponsors as possible for the monthly marathons over the next 12 months and would appreciate any donations you could spare at www.justgiving.com/fows2015. The first marathon is coming up on 24.01.15 named the Winter Viking Coastal Marathon. These donations are going towards the Whatfield School (FOWS) to assist with the purchase of additional ICT Equipment so we can give all the children at our wonderful small school as much opportunity and access to the latest learning tools.

Boxford Drama Group What malevolence prowls in the darkness of a cold winter’s night?

Imagine the horror if the night never ends.

This nightmare becomes a reality for two couples who gather at a cottage for a birthday celebration.

Little do they know that they have awoken an evil that has waited over two hundred years for this night and that their revelry will soon be replaced by unnatural and terrifying events. The night’s end can only come when evil brings it to a chilling and violent conclusion.

Haunted, by Michael Munn, is Boxford Drama Group's next production for March. It is designed to be terrifying and to shock.

There are moments of strong violence and is not for the faint hearted or the squeamish, and is not suitable for children. The performances are on Thursday 12th, Friday 13th and Saturday 14th March at 7.30pm. Tickets are £13.00 with a meal and there will be a licensed bar.

GSOLICITORS IBBONS A bad hair day for Howard Hello good readers. It has been so cold that I have just returned from dancing with an eskimo.

On a previous occasion, I did briefly mention my visits to James Daniel to have my hair coiffed. I am fortunate that at my great age I still have plenty of hair to do something with.

I know that it was of great interest so here is a picture of Master Hairdresser James working on tresses of my hair. The colour is natural; with a little styling here and there and a touch of Harmony I am then ready for another week. Before I drop off in my four poster I pop a special preparation on my cheeks to prevent aging and away I go. James takes a great deal of care in cutting men’s hair and can make the most ordinary mop of hair seem extraordinary. Well worth a visit at 20 High Street Tel. 01473 823616.

It is nice at the weekend to take in a Sunday lunch. I am a great fan of The Orwell Hotel Hamilton Road Felixstowe IP11 7DX Tel. 01394 285511. Frank of course delivers us but as an owner-driver you may need a parking space and those are in abundance. The Westerfield Dining Room is like something from a grand Edwardian House with enormous chandeliers. The grand piano tinkles away; there is a wide choice, linen table cloths smart waiters and waitresses – just my cup of tea. I have recently had shoulder of lamb which was tenderness itself. There is a sweet trolley, hot desserts and a super cheese board. It is very much removed from these modern brash places that seem so popular with the hoi polloi. It was with sadness that I read in the Daily Telegraph that Nursey of Bungay (who were makers of sheepskin garments for generations) had finally ceased trading. February – fill the dyke. Let’s hope that there is not too much rain to inhibit our riding lessons this month. There will however be a couple of indoor events to keep our brains occupied. The first, during the half term holiday, is a Volunteer Management Workshop for all Group Members who would like to be informed and enthused by a specialist from our RDA ‘parent body’. All our helpers have the opportunity to increase their knowledge and expertise by attending either In-House or County Training Days during each year, which are generally found to be most beneficial. The second is the ever popular Quiz Night at Polstead Village Hall on 28th February. They say that fish is good for the brain so a Fish & Chip supper is included in the evening. If you would like to come, give us a ring.

Whilst on the subject of fund raising, if you are making marmalade at this time of year and are able to put a couple of jars aside for us to sell on our stall at the Hadleigh Show in May, we would be most grateful.

The ponies have been feeling the benefit of a splendid new field shelter in which they can keep out of the wind and wet weather – whilst still eating the grass. What could be better! The purchase of the shelter was made possible by a generous donation from Councillor Gordon Jones from his Suffolk County Council Locality budget, together with an additional donation from AXA Insurance Liabilities Managers – who also came to help us clear the fields of ragwort last summer. Very many thanks to both of these donors and to all of our supporters for your continued help in funding the running of The Centre so that the children and adults with disabilities can endorse the RDA motto “It is what you CAN do that counts”.

Sudbury Bowls Club Twenty players braved the winter weather on Sunday 28th December to play the Christmas Spoon Drive – a fun competitive tournament – on the indoor rinks at the Sudbury Bowls Club on Quay Lane.

The competition is played over three sets of 6 ends, with a total personal score depending on how many winning points are made and lost over the course of the tournament. Each player picks a disc which dictates their team partners, rink number, and playing positions with a re-draw for each set. Apart from playing well of course it really is ‘the luck of the draw’ as well! It’s a friendly and fun atmosphere finishing with a buffet and drinks in the social lounge. The Ladies winner was Jacqui Edgar with Doreen Stubbs runner up and for the Men’s the winner was Len Baker with Len Smith runner up. Spoon Drives are a regular occurrence at the club and always have a good turn out of players who value the competition but in a less formal environment.

The club, which celebrated its centenary in 2013, hosts and participates in National, County and Cup Competitions as well as having vibrant internal leagues with over 90 teams. If you have just stopped playing physical competitive sports and fancy trying a new game where challenging tactical skills are key we will happily offer you a taster session to see if bowls could be for you.

The entries are in and the 93rd Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts will get under way at the Ormiston Academy in February. The Festival Programme is now available from the Town Hall and the Library.

“This event is wonderful for both Sudbury and all the performers and their families and the standard of the performers continues to get better each year” said Jan Osborne, Chair of the Festival Committee. “I fully recommend that you come to experience the high standard of performers, especially the concert on the 22nd March at the Ormiston Academy. Please give your support to this event and the people who have spent many hours to ensure its success.” The festival is open to all age groups and includes dance, music and speech and drama. There are a large number of cups to be won including the Holmes and Hill Award for Endeavour, the Bernard Johnson Award for an Outstanding Performer and the Suffolk Free Press Anniversary Cup for the Most Promising Competitor as well as awards for competitors in each section of the Festival.

This action-packed event begins with the Dance Section on the 14th February.

Thanks to the entire Hadleigh community it has been an absolutely amazing year; we’ve settled in to our surroundings, tweeked it here and there, and added to our team as we’ve needed to in order to keep up with the demand for our services.

During the last year, we have had the privilege of visits from an enormous amount of well-known and incredibly loyal local people and a very steady stream of new – perhaps new to the area – individuals who have all commented on what a wonderful high street, with such a diversity of businesses we have. Those who have recently discovered our beautiful Suffolk town are completely enthralled by how very accommodating and helpful people are – often commenting that Hadleigh is such an easy place in which to live, or is a breath of fresh air after the madness of large town or city living.

And of course many regular patrons of the high street come in from the surrounding villages – but they’re still very much part of the local Hadleigh landscape.

Although it’s only been a year, to us it feels like we’ve always been there – now we only get the odd ribbing about needing our feet nailing to the floor!

But, once again, we want to thank you, all of you whoever you are, for helping to make our transition to our own premises so smooth and such a wonderful experience.

We’re not much of ones for gimmicks – clients just want what works for them.

But it is our anniversary month and a little pressie now and then never goes amiss! So for the duration of February, every service will be accompanied by a FREE entry into a prize draw. Panto draws in the crowds in Hadleigh Oh yes it does....

On the 15th 16th and 17th of January the Hadleigh Amateur Dramatics Society (HADS) took over St Marys Church for the week and transformed it in to a theatre. The massive stage set up took over the whole front of the church area and showcased 'The Hadleigh Cinderella' Panto. The pantomime was written and directed by myself and it certainly pulled in the crowds. Each performance was a sell out with 150 people at each show. My cast and crew worked really hard as Cinderella (played by Taylor McCarthy) and Buttons (played by Sarah Dawes), tried to get Cinders to the ball, as she was not invited by the Prince who was played by Harry Plank. The story had a twist though and all was not as it seemed.

HADS has been overwhelmed by positive comments about the show and also lots of fantastic photos, which we very much appreciated and laughed at! We did hit a few technical glitches with sound, as this was the first time the church had been used for this purpose, and its a big church to fill.

We apologise to anyone who couldn't quite hear near the back but promise you next year this will be sorted out.

The show could not have gone on without a lot of hard work and determination and so I have a lot of people to thank. First of all - my cast and crew, who most of them, had never acted or sang in public before. They have worked hard since August learning lines, stage directions, singing and also the routines of the show too, so thanks VERY much to all of them. Glenn’s ‘Wild Hogs’ Indian Motorcycle Challenge 2015 For those who don't know me, my name is Glenn Root and have lived in Hadleigh with my wife Elaine for the past 28 years. In late spring 2014 and almost without warning (apart from some cold-like symptoms), I was struck down by a severe lung infection and pneumonia and was referred to consultant at Ipswich hospital for tests, investigations and treatment.

The illness kept me off work for over 3 months and my recovery to 100% good health is still on-going.

Shortly before Xmas at a get together with old college mates, four of us decided that we would do this motorcycle challenge across the Himalayan foothills in India later on this year in October (I still think we were all probably drunk at the time!).

Whilst my three friends are completing this as a personal challenge, I thought I'd take up the option of doing it for charity and decided to raise funds for a charity called "Breathing Matters" which is aligned with lung disease and pneumonia research. My target is to raise atleast £3,500 and would be extremely grateful to receive any donations to this cause. Stretching is vital for muscle health. Whether you are a professional athlete, play amateur football, hockey, rugby or basketball, a keen cyclist, runner or swimmer, even if you are just walking the dog every day, no matter what your level of fitness keeping muscle flexibility is key to good muscle health.

Stretching before exercise helps prepare the body for activity by increasing the circulation of blood to the muscles and clearing the lymphatic system around the soft tissues. Stretching helps increase flexibility and joint range of movement preventing injury and improving muscle and joint performance.

HOW TO STRETCH GENTLY and SLOWLY take each muscle to the point when you start to feel a resistance, GENTLY hold the stretch for 30 to 60 seconds, allowing the muscle to release and grow longer. DO NOT cause yourself any pain – there’s no need.

CAREFUL - If you take the stretch too far you can cause an inflammatory response, meaning your body will try to repair the damage. Every time you feel pain when stretching you are actually causing damage to the soft tissue.

Stretching is also used in the treatment of injuries and the rehabilitation from injury or surgery. I use stretching within part of my treatment plans for anyone who is injured and by using a number of stretching techniques maximum performance is quickly and successful regained.

Babergh was recently voted one of the UK’s best places to live and most folks would agree. After 25 years living here, at Glemsford and now Hadleigh, that includes me. Yet there’s also much misery on our doorstep. It’s easy to forget or ignore that these are tough times for people who may live just down your road or be standing in front of you in the Post Office.

I had a desperate call just before Christmas from a woman concerned about her granddaughter – let’s call her Susan. Aged 20, Susan has learning difficulties and problems with mental health. Her Job Seekers Allowance had been stopped in October resulting in her being homeless. She was now sofasurfing – sleeping each night on the settee in her sibling’s one bedroom flat.

Getting help so close to Christmas was impossible. An early appointment was made with a disability rights charity for the New Year. Their help and advice means Susan now receives Income Support. After contacting a housing scheme for homeless young women, I hope Susan will get a place of her own there, close to her grandmother. I led a local legal services charity so understand how vital specialist disability rights work is. It faces huge demands and little local financial support. I work with homeless young people and adults with mental ill health and learning difficulties. I know ‘supported living’ schemes, like the one I hope Susan will soon call home, have growing waiting lists and reduced budgets.

It’s good that so many people find Babergh a great place to live but let’s not delude ourselves that comfort and security are available or enjoyed by all. As Ghandi once said, ‘The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members’ People like Susan.

We have a choice. We can see people like Susan as the problem, or we can see them as people with problems needing help with solutions. In May we can vote to ignore or forget the desperation and misery amongst us or vote to make security available to all.

Milden Singers It was a full house for both performances of ‘Hits from the Blitz’ at the recent nostalgic concerts. With songs, poems, sing-a-longs and memories both young and old enjoyed the music of Glenn Miller, The Andrews Sisters, Dame Vera Lynn to name a few and the memorable solo ‘Under the Bed’ which filled the hall with laughter A staggering £1011 was raised for Milden Pavilion with a donation of £308 to Help for Heroes from the raffle.

Something in ‘common’ with Prince Harry You probably read that Prince Harry said he gets very nervous when he has to speak in public to any size audience. This is quite understandable but is something with practice that can so easily be overcome. If practice makes perfect as you grandmother used to say then help is at hand. There are number of ‘speakers clubs’ in our area that meet fortnightly that practice the skill of public speaking. The group is never more than 16 and everything is geared up to support and help members and guests on how best to approach the subject of speaking in public. The evening takes the form of various exercises from members speaking off the cuff for 30 seconds, to speaking for 2 minutes on a selected subject going on to prepared speeches on various subjects for up to 10 minutes. The whole process is there to help and encourage those present to develop this very useful skill.

New Year resolutions maybe somewhat old hat in these most uncertain time but taking up a new skill is something very much worthwhile. You will be very pleasantly surprised how quickly you become competent in this much valued skill. You would be most welcome to come a meeting and sit there as a guest to see what goes on and decide whether it is something you would like to get involved in.

Lavenham Players Lavenham Players are proud to announce that their next production will be an openair performance of one of William Shakespeare's most celebrated comedies, Twelfth Night, co- directed by Gemma Leggett and Penny Mills. Building on the success of Lavenham Players' memorable 2013 production of Much Ado About Nothing, which captured the imagination of the village and beyond, this production will once again take place amid the elegant surroundings of the beautiful Lavenham Hall, with a live band ready to transport you back in time to the roaring twenties! The last open-air Shakespeare production, a complete sell-out, proved to be enormous fun for cast, crew, musicians and audience alike, and we are confident that 2015's effort will be no exception.

Twelfth Night is a joyful journey through the fictional land of Illyria - a tale of shipwrecked twins, unrequited love and an infamous pair of yellow stockings!

As a fun and accessible introduction to Shakespeare and Twelfth Night, Gemma and Penny are holding two pre-audition workshops, to take place at Lavenham Village Hall, on both Sunday 15th February and Saturday 21st February, running from 2pm-4pm on both dates. Using new workshop techniques recently developed by the Globe Theatre's Creative Senior Advisor, Fiona Banks, these workshops will provide participants with a simple two hour taster session of what speaking and performing Shakespeare is all about, helping to unlock and unpack Shakespeare's language, turning the words into action, and allowing the text to flow from 'page to stage.' Whether young or old, a seasoned Shakespeare performer or a keen novice, all are more than welcome to come along, loosen up and have some fun with the Bard! Gemma and Penny will be on hand on the day to answer any questions or queries you may have.

Following on from the workshop dates, open auditions for Twelfth Night will then be held at the Village Hall on Sunday 1st March (2pm-4pm) and on Monday 2nd March from 7.30pm. Once again, all are welcome to come along and audition, whether experienced at treading the boards or just curious.

Heating Oil Thefts Warning…..

One of the many heating oil suppliers have recently sent out the below advice to its customers, so thought I would share it with you the reader, bear in mind that there are many other heating oil suppliers so it would be advised to be vigilant whoever your supplier is!

‘Ukayfuels has been advised to warn all customers of current oil theft activity.

Unknown to the delivery drivers, it is believed that they are being followed by oil thieves. Once oil has been delivered to the designated property, oil thieves then enter the property and siphon the oil, meaning customers have to pay again for their oil and to repair their tank.

Ukayfuels have made all of our drivers aware of this and will be doing their best to deter thieves. However we highly recommend that customers do their up most to prevent their tank from being attacked.

To assist you to reduce the risk of theft Ukayfuels have a wonderful new product called Smartguard. It’s an antitheft and monitoring device that detects unusual large drops in levels activating an alarm & notifying yourself or your supplier by text or email.’

Most Heating Oil suppliers will have their own Smartguard device so contact them in the first instance should wish to purchase one for you home/tank.

Some helpful tips to help you protect you heating Oil….

• Screen your tank with hedging or fences • Close and secure perimeter gates • Conceal any external pipe work • Install dusk till dawn lighting • Regularly check your fuel levels • Install lockable caps or an alarm (consult your tank supplier) • Join a neighborhood watch scheme, keep an eye out and call 999 if you see anything suspicious

Daylight burglaries are occurring in the local area…

Many people don’t pay as much attention to their home’s security during the daylight hours. This is because people tend to feel safer when not surrounded by darkness. However, when looking at statistics burglaries are just as likely to occur during the day. A burglary at a property can occur at any time day or night, in fact many burglaries occur during the day, as offenders tend to blend in better with the surroundings and are able to offer more plausible excuses should they be challenged, such as “I am lost”, “I was looking for Mr X who lives somewhere around here”, “I thought this property was for sale” and “I’ve lost my dog”, along with various other excuses that can be more easily made during the normal daylight working hours. If your home is unoccupied during the day here are a few tips to help you to improve security: • ALWAYS lock your doors and windows when you leave the house, even if it’s only for a few minutes. Make sure your locks reach British Standards and are fit for purpose.

• Never assume that your home, garage, shed or studio will be safe while unlocked, even if you’re currently at home. It only takes a minute for someone to enter and take what is not theirs.

• Remove ALL tools and objects from within your garden that could be used by an offender to break into your home with.

• ALWAYS set your intruder alarm if you have one, during the day AND night.

And consider installing an alarm in any outbuildings too. Battery operated alarms can be purchased from Sudbury, Hadleigh and Capel Police Stations for £8 each.

• Use lights and, especially during the day, radios on timers inside your home.

• Property mark all electrical and valuable items with a UV & permanent marker pen, which can be purchased from the above stations for £1 each, or use a property marking solution like Smartwater or SelectaDNA. • Register any items that have serial numbers on the UK property database www.immobilise.com for free, including any bicycles and power tools.

• Ensure your perimeters are secure with fencing or appropriate hedging and lock sidegates at all times with a padlock or mortice lock.

• IF YOU REMEMBER JUST ONE THING… Remember to store ALL important valuables including jewellery and cash out of sight and if possible in a hidden wall or floor safe. The first place an offender will look is in the top drawer of your dresser unit, or in the back of a wardrobe. DON’T MAKE IT EASY FOR THEM. Finally we are asking for residents to help to be our eyes and ears in the community. If you see something suspicious, or out of the ordinary then please report it and whenever possible report it straight away by calling 101. Please do not leave it to someone else; we would sooner have a number of calls on the same suspicious person, than none at all.

Mozart: a life in letters A Concert on Sunday 11th January by CHROMA United Reformed Church, Hadleigh Many people know and love Mozart’s music but fewer are familiar with his extensive correspondence which reveals his character and times so clearly.

Writing to his father in 1777 he says that ‘Count Salern ....certainly knows his Musique because he kept saying Bravo when other gentlemen would take a pinch of snuff – blow their nose, clear their throat – or start a conversation.’ The actor, Edward Max, sonorously read parts of Mozart’s letters to a much more attentive and comfortable audience that might have been the case two hundred and fifty years ago. Between the readings came three of Mozart’s Preludes and Fugues after J.S. Bach; arrangements of Bach’s music for string trio – sparse, sinewy and beautifully played, a foil for the words. In the second part of the programme CHROMA played Mozart’s String Trio in Eb major.

The players clearly loved their work; the music ebbed and flowed, rose and fell, glances between them showed a connection which was not just matter of sound alone, and the whole was underpinned by the sensitive but emphatic ‘cello playing of Clare O’Connell. One does not find playing of this quality in a small Suffolk town very often.

CHROMA’S next event is a Musical Apéritif for Valentine’s Eve at the URC at 6.00pm on Saturday 14th February.

Hadleigh & District Footpath Volunteers Our walk this month will be a circular starting, and finishing at Sudbury on Saturday 14th February. We will leave by bus departing from the Bus Station (Coop side) at 9.50am. We will walk to Cuckoo Tye via Ballingdon Bridge, Brundon, Borley Hall, Long Melford, and return to Sudbury via Newmans Green and the Peoples Park. This walk is 7 miles in length. We will return to Hadleigh by bus arriving back at 2.30pm. Strong shoes, or walking boots should be worn as the paths can be rough, and wet in places. There are some superb views on this walk, and it will be well worth your effort. The walk is suitable for all adults, and older children. Your dog is welcome to join us but must be under close control when passing livestock. The dates for our walks for the rest of the year are as follows. March 14th, April 18th, May 16th, June 12th,13th and 14th (Hadleighs walking weekend), July 11th, August 8th, September 5th, October 3rd, November 7th and December 12th.

Run Hadleigh Run! Many people were chosen to participate in the third and final cross country competition. The event took place on Thursday 15th January, and was held at Culford School to select the Suffolk team for the Anglian and All England Championship.

All students from Hadleigh High School who participated in the competition, did exceptionally well. These students included: Alex Baxter (7th), Ewan Baxter (22nd), Felix Vardon-Barber (28th), Joel Cooper (43rd), Ellis Girling (45th), Rio Simpson (46th), Harvey Clements (48th), Ben Evans (51st), Rowan Bennett (23rd), Curtis Harvey (51st) and Catlin Fosker (32nd). Alex Baxter and Rowan Bennett stand a very good chance of being selected to represent Suffolk following their impressive performance in the three trial events. Alex Baxter told us: “I am extremely happy and proud; I have worked so hard for this”. Rowan Bennett stated: “It’s good I’ve had the chance to do this. I do fifteen miles per week in training.

Despite an arm injury, I still powered through the pain”. All runners showed great determination.

Student Union in Action After raising £3,500 from the sponsored walk in September, collectively, as a school, we have decided to spend the money on outdoor leisure equipment.

The decision process was aided by the recently established Student Union.

The Student Union represents the school and makes sure that students’ voices are heard. Run by previous head pupils, the Student Union consists of roughly 30 pupils and helps the school by listening to what the pupils themselves actually want. They created a survey with a short list of options for each Form Group to fill out. The final result was very clear. The outdoor equipment will allow students outside of clubs to enjoy playing things such as table tennis in their own time.

On 9th January 2015 a group of gallant students wondered into the Adastral Park and took part in the ROBO CUP Master class.

Students were introduced to C# coding and were able to learn how to use coding to make a virtual robot to pick up and detect colours whilst avoiding traps. They competed against a lot of schools (around 60 to be exact). Some of our brave robot programmes came third in the Master Class competition and are well on the way to develop great programming skills and coding to compete in the INTERNATIONAL ROBO CUP Competition on 20th March 2015.

Conservation Area Please can we say a big thank you to pupils, parents and staff for collecting the Morrisons ‘Let’s Grow’ vouchers. With all the vouchers that were collected we were able to order an Interactive Solitary Beehive and two Nesting Boxes.

The photograph on the left shows the large Bee and Bug Biome that was obtained with last year’s Morrisons ‘Let’s Grow’ vouchers.

The right hand photograph shows the ‘Bug Hotel’ that pupils helped to make using old bricks and wood. The habitat for wildlife within the Conservation Area will be much enhanced by these additions.

Connie Powell Rugby Trails Hadleigh High School’s very own Connie Powell, Year 10, has been selected for trials at the London and South East Rugby Academy. Connie said, “I am immensely pleased; I’ve trained for this for such a long time.”

This is a massive opportunity for Connie and we wish her all the best, as this could be a big step towards pursuing Rugby as a career.

Results Day for Year 11 On the 16th of January, the Year 11 students received their mock exam results.

The process is valuable for the pupils as it mirrors results day in August, when students go to the hall to receive a print out of all their results. It allows them to consider the importance of the ever-looming GCSEs they will soon take.

Before receiving his mock results, Will Simmons told us: “I am looking forward to receiving my mock results as I am keen to see where I need to improve, thus giving me revision guidance and allowing me to be successful in my real exams.”

Last year’s GCSE students celebrated with magnificent results, as 69% gained 5 or more passes at A*-C. This set a new record for the school. These results were the product of hard work and persistence, and we are hoping students will achieve this standard again this year.

Science Department and Eco Club The Science Department has installed a ‘Power Predictor’ in the grounds of the school.

The Power Predictor consists of a Wind Speed Sensor and Solar Sensor mounted on a mast.

The data recorded enables us to see what power could be potentially generated if we had our own wind turbine or solar panels at Hadleigh High School.

Kersey Mill Newsletter As the lighter nights approach the gardens and grounds around the mill are having a makeover with new planting and lots of composted mulch on the beds for good measure.

It won’t be long before the snowdrops appear, they look absolutely wonderful covering the riverbanks and give us hope that spring is only just round the corner.

On the restoration front the work continues on restoring the mill, much of the work on the wheel has been completed with a small amount of repairs still required to the Starts, unfortunately the heavy downpours and high water level through the race and river have delayed things a little. We are currently experiencing difficulties to our efforts due to the back-watering of the river and tail race to the wheel.

This occurs and impedes the wheel because the water is struggling to get away due in part to the flow between Kersey Mill and Hadleigh having a large amount of fallen trees which have been damming the river and impeding its flow. The environment agency has informed us this will be cleared shortly.

Our main efforts are now being focused on the pit wheel, A very large cast iron wheel that is connected by a shaft to the water wheel, as the waterwheel turns so does the Pitwheel, it then engages with other cogs and pinions providing the drive for the lay shaft and other machinery within the mill. 120 wooden teeth need to be cut and produced from kiln dried oak and fitted individually into the Pitwheel, We would be very pleased to hear from anyone with carpentry skills who may like to be involved.

Paul French My brother Paul died unexpectedly in September last year, he died from a virtually unknown condition called vasculitis. Suffolk Family Carers is a local charity that provides information, support and guidance to Family Carers around Suffolk. We have been offering our services for over 25 years and one of the things we have learnt during that time is that people caring for another person at home, perhaps a family member or friend donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t usually see themselves as a Family Carer, they just see it as part of being husband, wife, father, mother, daughter, son, friend etc. Because of this, it becomes so easy to forget the importance of your own health and wellbeing as all of your physical and emotional effort and energy is spent on looking after that person, and others who may be involved such as siblings.

You may feel that your own needs do not matter at this time, but in order to provide care and support you do need to keep your own batteries charged.

In 2015 Suffolk Family Carers will be working with our hospice colleagues in Suffolk to offer an information and support programme for those people caring for someone nearing the end of their life. There will be a series of five informal sessions that offer information and an opportunity to reflect and gain support from others in a similar situation. The programme will run around the County with the first ones starting end of January. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s aim is to improve the Family Carerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own situation and that of the person they Care For. Hadleigh and District Garden Club December: This year the Christmas Quiz and Fizz Evening was under new direction but equally fiendish with memories having to scavenge from the long lost past, in fact before some of the members were born (and incidentally it wasn't fizz but a warm spicy drink - another ploy to fog the memories?! It was a fantastic evening of food and fun enjoyed by everyone, even the vocal rendition by one member! The thanks this year go to the committee for the marvellous array of food and John W., Ruth S., and Margaret and Andy for the competition. At this point we would all like to thank Ruth Smith for her hard work as Treasurer and say how sad we are that she and Bob are moving away in the New Year and wish them both the very best in their new abode. It just remains for me to add that if there is a noble soul out there who fancies the Treasurership or even the Secretaries position (as the secretary is prepared to do the treasurers job , but can't do both) - please do come forward. We are all a very friendly crowd and a garden isn't a vital part of it - a couple of pot plants will do! (The committee only meet 3 or 4 times a year.) So please think about it, and come to our aid if you possibly can, we can't continue without a treasurer.

January: Surprisingly, on an evening of distinctly seasonal weather, our January meeting was pretty well supported. So thank you dedicated members!

It was an evening for airing our garden problems to four committee members who were 'put on the line' to come up with answers and recommendations, so we hope we were a help. The problems aired varied from woolly aphid and natural insect control (squashing in your fingers!!) to the regeneration of aged and /or pot bound plants; the starting of wet bonfire material safely and the Bylaws appertaining thereto and I really mustn't forget the cultivation and correct pruning of raspberries!!! (He knows who he is).

It was though a sad evening in some ways as we said goodbye to our wonderful Tresasurer Ruth Smith and husband Bob who will both be sadly missed but we wished them well for their new life in Frinton. As ever the marvellous Secretary Carole who rescued us from obivion has moved sideways to step into Ruth's shoes and handed the 'pen' to Linda. On behalf of us all, thank you both.

The next meeting on Feb 9th is to be given by Matt Tanton-Brown on Practical Propogation - the competition is a vase of Hellebores.

What’s On in Sudbury Despite the weather, February is the most romantic of months.

Make the most of a romantic date in Sudbury whether it’s shopping, having a meal, going to an exhibition or the theatre.

Sudbury has an excellent selection of pubs, cafes and restaurants, many with special Valentine’s Day menus such as the Secret Garden in Friars Street with a matching food and wine menu for February 14.

Sing along pop, Motown and chart songs with the Rock Choir at The Quay Theatre which is on Thursday 12 to Saturday 14. Also on the 14 there is an hour of organ music with Tom Cogan in St Peter’s. Gainsborough’s House has their current exhibition of Samuel William Fores, Satirist: Caricatures from the Reform Club exhibition which is on until the 22nd February. Regular events in St Peter’s include Craft Fairs, Sudbury Symphony Orchestra, Kettle and Fish café every Thursday and the Farmers’ Market on the last Friday of the month. The Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts which is competitive festival open to people of all ages commences a month of events with Dance from the 14 to 18 February at Ormiston Sudbury Academy. There are also noncompetitive classes and with a wide range of classes there is something to suit everyone at this friendly, professionally adjudicated festival.

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts I was a member of the Panel for the January ‘Any Questions’ session at the Garden Club, and there was one question that I felt we failed to deal with satisfactorily. The question concerned a specimen box bush growing in a pot on which the top leaves were turning yellow. Now ‘Box Blight’ is another of the new diseases that have appeared in the last few years. It is caused by a couple of fungi, and has caused the total removal of box hedges in some well known gardens. For the Panel the problem was that none of us had actually seen it.

Research on the internet after the meeting shows that it causes the leaves to turn brown and die, and if it is well developed there may be the fruiting bodies of the fungus which in one case are white, and the the other pink. For the amateur there is no satisfactory treatment. Even Monty Don gave up and cleared his hedges and replanted with something else.

In the case of the questioner the leaves were going yellow so the probable cause was exhaustion of the fertilizer in the compost, and possibly poor drainage because of the roots packing the pot. My suggestion which would be applicable to a number of pot grown shrubs would be to tip the plant out of the pot, and use a dibber to loosen and remove some soil from the sides and bottom of the root ball. It can then be repotted in the same or a slightly bigger pot using fresh compost to replace what has been removed.

2015 has been declared the Hadleigh Year of the Sheep. Having just sat down to put my seed order together I thought it might be fun to grow some of the dye plants used to dye cloth in the 1500's. A lot of dyes were probably imported, but woad (blue), weld (yellow), and madder (red) were grown in the UK. So I consulted my catalogues, and found that I had missed the boat. If I wanted to harvest them in 2015, I should have sown them in 2014. I hope the organisers thought ahead further than I did.

Soil conditions around Hadleigh are very variable, so when I spotted an internet site that claimed to map soil types for the whole of England. I had to try it. I was amazed to find that it had the change of soil type in the middle of my garden correctly identified. If you want to try it the url is www.landis.org.uk/soilscapes.

Weather Records In December at Kersey there was 48.4 mm (1.9") of rain, which is about average for the month. The 3 monthly total at the end of November was 237.4 mm (9.3") which is nearly 60% more than the average figure. December completes the year, and this time the annual total was 677.8 (26.7"). This is very close to our average annual rainfall over the last few years.

In December the maximum temperature was 14 Cel (57F) which is warmer than average, and the minimum temperature was -2 Cel (28F) which is about average. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 3 Cel (37F). Mid January ground temperature seems to be quite variable, and this is within the normal range. Maybe the grass will stop growing now.

Hints The main thing to do in February is to make sure that you are ready for March when the garden really wakes up. So make sure that you have any seeds that you want to sow. If you grow potatoes then Partridges already have theirs in.

If you want something a bit more unusual then this years potato day is on 14 February in the morning at Stonham Barns.

If the weather permits flower beds can be overhauled, and vegetable beds prepared. It would be good if the various pruning jobs on roses, fruit trees and shrubs could be completed. Do not prune spring flowering shrubs, or plum/damson trees in the Spring.

Coppicing involves cutting down hazel, ash, sweet chestnut, etc. and allowing it to regrow from the stump or stool. The regrowth can itself be harvested in 4 to 25 years depending on the size required. Coppicing areas of a wood in rotation not only extends the life of the individual stools but greatly increases the biodiversity of the wood creating new glades where smaller plants, and hence animals, can thrive. Coppiced hazel is used at Orchard Barn in a number of ways â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it is the wattle onto which daub is smeared to create walls; several poles lashed together formed the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;benderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; that helped keep the toolshed dry while we worked on its roof where our own elm poles have become rafters; hand cleft coppiced Sweet Chestnut were used for battens in the main barn roof.

Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce CIC Extraordinary General Meeting 6pm, Tuesday 10th February 2015, Guildhall, Hadleigh Help define what the Chamber now does.

Although we did not, unfortunately, receive enough volunteers to run a full committee and cover all areas of operation, we have received a lot of support and requests for individual projects. We are therefore holding an open meeting on 10th February to explore and decide what the Chamber does going forward and how we finance and resource that work. The first project has been the Loyalty card and, with generous support from Keith Avis Printers the Chamber will be able to continue to run the scheme.

But how many other projects can we run to benefit Hadleigh and its businesses? Please come along and have your say, put your ideas forward and, if you can spare just a little bit of time, help us get the Chamber working again. The main themes for the Fund are: • Buying and giving away percussion instruments – including multicultural sets and outdoor equipment - for younger children to use • Buying orchestral instruments (such as clarinets) to loan to older children who might not otherwise have that opportunity • Funding tuition costs for playing orchestral instruments for older children who might not otherwise have that opportunity • Funding workshops and support for children on the autism spectrum or who have suffered bereavement The Fund also plans to give longer-term support to local musical ensembles by hosting a series of workshops (including for teachers and others) and concerts in Rosa’s name. Nigel Crisp, one of the Fund’s team, said “the amazing generosity of so many has ensured that the Rosa Simon Music Fund is likely to be around for some time, but of course we don’t want to be sitting on lots of money as that won’t realise the Fund’s vision for ensuring every local children has improved access to music”. “Furthermore, because of the Fund’s initial successes, we are now looking at applying for charitable status and setting up its own bank account”.

The Hadleigh Choral Society donated £360 to Rosa's Fund The organisers of a fund set up in the wake of the death of a three and a half year old Hadleigh girl are calling on local organisations to make New Year’s resolutions to apply for its support in improving musical opportunities for all local children. The Rosa Simon Music Fund has raised nearly £13,500 since June 2014 when Rosa died in a tragic accident as she scootered on the pavement immediately outside her house.

Yet the Fund has only receive a few applications in that time – all of them accepted - totalling less than £900.

Paul Simon, Rosa’s father explained that “this gap actually says something very special about the community spirit in the town and the surrounding villages. So many people and organisations have hurled themselves into fantastically inspiring fundraising activities, but many seem shy about asking for funding themselves. “But now is the time for local schools, churches, playgroups, registered child minders plus the various choirs in the area to help us responsibly invest the money raised to achieve the aims of Rosa’s Fund”.

Hadleigh Girl’s Winning designs 2014 was a bumper year for Ophelia Yannaghas from Jordayn Rise, Hadleigh who turned fourteen this month. Fortune for Ophelia kicked off early last year when she clinched the Art Scholarship to Culford Senior School, near Bury. Since then she has been on a roll and created a cornucopia of delightful designs which are now in print and causing quite a stir around East Anglia.

“We awarded Ophelia the Art Scholarship because we found all her work so exciting and impressive” enthused Mrs Hunt, Head of Art at Culford School, “but, in truth, it was her iPad illustrations which swung it for her.

These are quite exceptional. They manifest a style both unique and delightful and demonstrate a talent way beyond her years”. From an early age, Ophelia harboured a flair for design and drawing which first became evident at Monks Eleigh Primary School. Since then, she has pursued her passion for illustration, doodling whenever possible in her spare time, developing her own unique creative style in 2013 with the help of an iPad. During Christmas last year she began work on ‘The Virginia Delrimple Collection’ which is a series of drawings based on a retired catwalk model, Virginia and her glamorous circle of friends. These designs, known commercially now as ‘Foofster Designs’, really pack a punch as greetings cards and are on sale in over twenty outlets around Essex and Suffolk, prompting requests from retailers to provide a rolling stock and create new designs to order. Jimmy’s Farm at Wherstead are keen to stock her cards this year and have asked her to create some designs of their own animals.

Ophelia finds it hard to believe how well ‘Foofster Designs’ have been received.

“I can’t believe that people are taking my doodles seriously” she said. “One minute they were doodles, the next they were cards and now they are in the shops. It’s unbelievable.” It’s not surprising that ‘Foofster Designs’ are causing such a sensation and not least because their creator is so young. They are undeniably charismatic little drawings, deft, colourful and effortlessly humorous and all executed with a flick of the finger.

Her Dachshund design has proved to be her most popular to date. Like the rest of her characters, these shifty little sausage dogs carry the artist’s hallmark of the sheepish, side-long glance.

Looking for something fun for the family to do in the February half term?

Hadleigh Library Friends Group invites you to our latest family theatre show Wiz Around Oz. It's a first for us and possibly Hadleigh as this show doesn't take place in a hall it takes place all around Hadleigh. The Walking Theatre Company will be performing their adaptation of the Wizard of Oz story. In this performance, Dorothy has lost Toto, the Cowardly Lion has lost the Tin Man, the Wicked Witch of the West has lost the Wicked Witch of the East, the Scarecrow has lost the way and the Great Wiz has lost his marbles. Come along and find out if it all gets sorted out.

Suffolk Cross Country Championships Hadleigh Hares were well represented at this years Suffolk Cross Country Championships held at Ixworth Park in Bury St Edmunds. The competition involves all of the running clubs in Suffolk with the top placed finishers going on to represent Suffolk at National level. The day started off crisp and sunny but when the fog descended the temperatures dropped sharply which made the waist high water ditch a bit chilly but it gave the spectators something to laugh about, especially seeing the ones who fell face first into it.

Jasmine Hayward produced another excellent cross country performance to win the county Gold medal in the U20 category and our senior ladies team continued their impressive form by winning the team event ahead of Ipswich Jaffa.

Elisa Bostock took the Bronze medal in the senior womens category and our senior men finished in 5th position with John Scaife taking Jasmine Hayward Silver in the Veteran category.

1st U20 Female Cross Country - Ipswich Ipswich Jaffa hosted Race 4 of the 53-12 Cross country league on the windswept fields surrounding the Suffolk Food Hall in Wherstead.

Congratulations to our junior squad who pushed up into 9th position in the league. The junior runners were Noah & Esme Jamieson, Ella Bodsworth, Elizabeth Stewart, Freddie Ashmore and Sara Scaife. The Seniors extended their lead at the top of Pool B with another good team performance. Our first two ladies came home in 2nd and 3rd position. Sara Taylor-Balls raced well and Jessie McKenzie had an excellent debut run for the Hares. Danny Preece continued his good form finishing 16th in the Mens race. The 'Performance of the day’ award this week went to Jasmine Hayward for her battling efforts to hang onto 3rd place.

Ellie Aldous New County Junior Captain Newton Green’s Ellie Aldous is to be junior captain of Suffolk Girls for 2015.

The 16-year-old still has two seasons of junior golf to represent the county, and has already become a member of the senior team squad, including making her debut in the regional county golf week during 2014.

One of the longer hitters in Suffolk ladies’ golf, she and fellow Newton junior Alice Barlow became the youngster ever winners of the county’s prestigious Haskell Trophy in 2013. Ellie is at West Suffolk College where she is studying for a BTech in Sports Excellence Sciences.

She has played at Newton since the age of 10, and in 2008 made national headlines when she beat off a 100-strong field of adult golfers to win the club’s prestigious Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver. Ellie then played off a handicap of 42, although qualification for the event has now been cut to 36.

During the year her handicap was five, but at present stands at six.
