Push to sign up new cyclists...

Hadleigh Cycling Club, now in its 5th year, has plans to encourage more people to get on their bikes in 2016. Last year, the Club organised the town’s first sportive, ran one of the most successful Junior Clubs in Suffolk, promoted dozens of social rides, supported a group of riders who rode from London to Paris in 24 hours and raised over £7000 for the Brendan Oakes Trust. The Club will be holding a Subs night on Friday 5th February, 8pm onwards at The George (upstairs functions room). The membership fees are £10 for an individual and £30 for a family. For those who cannot attend, details of the Club can be found at www.hadleighcyclingclub.org.

Adam Chamberlin, the Chairman, said, “The Club is here to ensure that cycling is kept alive within the community and we welcome anyone that wishes to join or ride with us”. “We would like to see more girls and women taking part in the Club in 2016. And we are working with the town’s schools to encourage children to take up cycling.” Adam added, “We’ve got nearly 100 members and we hope that new and existing members can pop along to meet with the committee over a drink and find out what’s on for the season”. The Junior Club will re-start on Wednesday, 24th February, 6pm at the High School.

Adult and Junior Club members have been very active in the regional mountain bike Mud Sweat and Gears series, with Alex Cutmore and Lissa Laflin winning the U9 championship titles in 2014 and 2015. This year, Round 1 will be held for the first time at Hintlesham on Sunday 6th March. It is expected that 350 riders will attend.

Let’s Twist Again:- With the Apex Bury St Edmunds transformed into an American Diner, all was set to host the vibrant show ‘Let’s Twist Again’ starring the talented Chris and Suzi Madin. Suzi convincingly performed songs

by Lulu, Dusty, Sandie Shaw, Pet Clarke and many other celebrities from the 50’s and 60’s. Her husband, Chris, of ‘Strictly’ fame, spent most of the time in the background. Happily, he was very much in the foreground for the grand finale when he energetically performed several Beatles’ songs. It wasn’t long before the audience were on their feet, dancing in the aisles or near their seats. Fidelis’ members were happy to join in as it completed a most enjoyable, nostalgic evening.

Lunch Bunch:- To avoid possible travel issues during the winter months, Lunch Bunchers tend to stay closer to home. As many members had not visited The White Hart since its makeover, this was the ‘local’ venue for their monthly foodie outing. Owners Ros and Simon looked after the hungry group with care and attention. Food was delicious with only empty plates returning to the kitchen after each course. Lively discussions over lunch ranged from the floods, refugees, War and Peace and the controversial plan to charge for parking in Hadleigh. As always Fidelis lunches are not only about eating. JD

1991 was the year of Terminator 2, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Whitney Houston, Queen, the Super Nintendo game system and Cabbage Patch Kids.

It was also when something called the internet clocked up its millionth worldwide user. How times change. But there have been some constants including Birch Farm. Yes, we were founded in 1991 and so we are now 25 years old! We think that fact alone makes us one of the longest-lasting nurseries in Suffolk, ...if not the country.

But our real pride is in the care and education we have been able to offer to the 1000-plus youngsters who have been part of the Birch Farm family over that time. Quartet at Boxford Village Hall This March, Boxford Drama Group are staging Ronald Harwood’s wonderfully poignant and very funny play Quartet. We may not have the services of Maggie Smith and the other stars of 2012’s film but our actors are all of an age to be residents of the retirement home, in which the play is set!

Consultation launched into Lavenham Neighbourhood Development Plan Babergh District Council has commenced a six week consultation following the formal submission of a Neighbourhood Development Plan for Lavenham which has been prepared and produced by the local community. This is the first such plan in the Babergh area which if eventually ‘made’ (adopted) by the District Council will be used to determine planning applications.

Babergh is now asking whether the policies contained within the Plan are appropriate and is seeking views from people who live, work and carry out business in these areas. The deadline for the submission of comments is Tuesday 16 February 2016. The District Council will be organising an examination of the Plan once the consultation period is complete. Any comments received will be considered by an Independent Examiner who will determine whether the plans may go forward to a local referendum later in the year. Neighbourhood planning allows communities to develop their own planning policies which will guide new development. The Plan and supporting documents can be found here: www.babergh.gov.uk/LavenhamNDP

We are a team of cancer survivors, healthcare professionals and volunteers working together to provide a local support group in a relaxing environment where people with similar problems can share experiences, obtain information and take part in social activities. Our group is open to anyone affected by cancer whether undergoing or having completed treatment, and their carers.

Hadleigh man gets senior job at the British Museum A former Threadneedle Street Primary School, Highlands Road Primary School and Hadleigh High School pupil has been appointed as Director of Scientific Research at the British Museum. Carl Heron, who grew up in Gaell Crescent where his mother still lives, will move from his job at the University of Bradford where he has been based for 25 years. The British Museum is the leading visitor attraction in the UK with 6.7 million visitors. Carl will oversee the scientific analysis of the millions of artefacts and exhibits in the Museum and will lead on new projects to improve our understanding of the past.

We do also understand that going into a butchers shop can sometimes be quite daunting, and we want to help make it an enjoyable experience for customers of all ages. We appreciate that people don’t always know the best cuts of meat or the quantities required for the meal they are preparing, and that is where we are here to help. We really enjoy talking this through with customer, and making sure we offer the best buying and cooking advice. There is also the misconception that a high street butchers can be more expensive than buying from a supermarket, but this is not the case. Using a local butcher can actually be far more cost effective, as you are only buying what you actually need, reducing waste.

Sudbury Dramatic Society based at Sudbury’s Quay Theatre are looking forward to their first production of 2016, Shadowlands by William Nicholson, on at The Quay from Tuesday 1st March to Saturday 5th March.

Shadowlands is the humorous and unsentimental true story of the relationship between popular author and academic, C.S. Lewis, writer of the Tales of Narnia series of children’s books, and the divorced American poet, Joy Davidman. Set in Oxford in the 1950s, their relationship begins with long distance correspondence but, once Joy arrives in Oxford, she delights Lewis, who goes through a marriage of convenience with her to enable her to remain in England.

From these tentative and timid beginnings their relationship develops into a deep and abiding love. However, when Joy becomes terminally ill it comes to a tragic, but ultimately optimistic conclusion. The characters of Lewis and Joy are played by two SDS actors with proven track records with the society, Neil Arbon and Heidi Bernhard-Bubb, who will do justice to this very moving and poignant love story. However, as director Peter Drew says, “The success of Shadowlands depends on the ability of all the cast to work together to create a whole” and Shadowlands aims to do just that.

FUN News Update We are looking forward to a busy term at FUN daytime opportunities in Hadleigh. After a successful series of pilot projects in Autumn 2015 we are pleased to continue offering courses in art, drama, craft and music which is a new addition for this term.

The Art Space on Mondays between 1.30-3.30pm gives individuals the opportunity to take part in a wide range of art based activities. Whether you are new to art or already established, we will support you in your own project or encourage you to try something new.

Stars Alight Theatre Company on Wednesdays between 10.30-12.30pm is an inclusive theatre company designed to encourage and support teamwork, communication and performance skills. Act, sing or take part behind the scenes. Have lots of fun and make new friends as your confidence and self esteem grow.

Community Craft Club on Thursdays between 10.30-12.30pm gives individuals the opportunity to have a go at a range of craft activities. Using different techniques and materials you will be supported to make your own craft items to take home and be inspired and encouraged to develop your own ideas.

The Music Club is a new venture happening on Fridays between 1.30-3.30pm.

Led by Jackie Ord a professional musician and songwriter, participants will be encouraged to take part in a range of workshops through music, song and percussion.

FUN is a local charity operated by local parents in Hadleigh supporting people with learning and/or physical disabilities.

All sessions take place at ANANDA HOUSE, Magdalen Road, Hadleigh, IP7 5AD. FUN daytime opportunities are committed to providing fun and innovative workshops for all abilities, in a safe, supportive and friendly setting in the heart of Hadleigh.

News from Kersey School OWLS In Owls this term we are looking at different types of renewable energy.

We will hopefully be building our own wind farms and promoting recycling in our school. We had a great time at the Pantomime this term and really enjoyed singing along with all the songs, especially Uptown Funk. We are also creating our own inventions, as Wallace and Gromit wrote to us about all their inventions being stolen! Hopefully we can get them some new ones in time!

BADGERS In RE recently, Badgers class have been thinking about the idea of submission through looking at Islam. The children acted out a story where Muslims submit to Allah. We have also looked at various containers which hold different amounts of capacity in Maths. The children are now able to convert between ml and l too.

HEDGEHOGS We had a surprise when we came to school this week. All of the toys had come to life and been up to mischief! We think the naughty teddy used the magic wand to cast a spell! We are going to use this to help us write our own story. We all thoroughly enjoyed our trip to see the pantomime "The Sword and the Stone.”

SQUIRRELS This term Squirrels are learning around Traditional stories. Goldilocks visited our classroom and made a mess so the children made posters to offer a reward if she was found. We made and tasted porridge. We talked about hot and cold things, sorted pictures into hot/cold and then came up with our own ideas.

New Writers Group Starting in Hadleigh Wednesday 10th February 11am 1pm Paddy and Scott¹s Café at the front of the Hadleigh Co-op Let me introduce us. I¹m Gill Buchanan, writer of women¹s fiction, and together with Shaun Moffat, writer of children¹s/young adults books, are forming a Writers Group which will meet in Hadleigh/Bilderston and surrounding villages.

The purpose of the group is to provide friendly support and inspiration and to share experience and ideas around the self-publishing world. And, of course, to drink good coffee!

We are therefore looking for any budding fiction writers out there who fancy taking the risk of coming along to meet us and finding out more.

The inaugural meeting is on Wednesday 10th February starting at 11am.

Myself and Shaun will be there and we have one of the large tables reserved for us at Paddy and Scott¹s Café at the front of the Coop on Hadleigh High Street. We plan to come up with a name for the group at this meeting so do bring any ideas with you.

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard behind the Wheel Hello my dear Readers – thank you all for enquiring as to how my mother Brenda is coming along after fracturing her hip.

Upon our return from New York, my mother had a spell in Ipswich Hospital and she came back from a convalescent home in Woodbridge on Christmas Eve. I am pleased to say that she is getting stronger.

The picture shows me behind the wheel and as with all classic car buffs, I am looking forward to the Spring weather in order to take to the highways. Frank my chauffeur had the engine purring for a motor from Hadleigh traversing the A120 to Great Dunmow to visit P & A Wood, Rolls-Royce distributors and workshops. If you are remotely interested in cars, the Showrooms are really worthy of a visit with beautiful vehicles and other exhibits. There is also a shop. We then cantered on to Kelvedon and broke our journey at The Western Arms Silver End CM8 3SD. This pub/restaurant had recently been acquired by the owners and was well presented with courteous service and good food at very reasonable prices. They even had somewhere for Frank to eat. If you are out on a run why not pay them a visit.

Peering through the haze of the misted windows of the Gibbons’ residence on these cold days, one will find my housekeeper Maria and Frank dealing with domestic duties and warming themselves over the AGA. I’ve recently agreed to dispense with the services of the twin-tub washing machine – its belt had gone to ribbons. We now have an automatic model which washes, rinses and spins.

Frank has been in the kitchen garden forking in some organic matter and he’s popped his aubergines under glass. What a life we have in the Country.

I have mentioned to you on various occasions the merits of entering a Lasting Power of Attorney. An ordinary Power of Attorney can be granted under the Powers of Attorney Act 1971 in about two lines.

That though will not outlive the mental incapacity of the person granting it and hence the special regime of the Lasting Power of Attorney which does just that. You can enable someone else to run all your affairs on your behalf even after you have lost mental capacity. That is known as a Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney There is a similar arrangement for health decisions called a Health and Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney.

In February, Orion is high in the southern sky and is one of the most easily recognised constellations, but if you're unsure, the graphic shows you how to locate this amazing constellation.

Look for the three stars half way down that resemble the hunters belt.

Next , look to the lower right for a vertical row of stars that make up the hunter's sword. Can you see a fuzzy "star" in the middle of the sword? That's M42 or otherwise known, The Orion Nebula.

With a humble pair of 10x50 binoculars, the fuzzy star will appear in the other image herein, a 3" telescope or larger will give you a breathtaking view of this very bright emission nebula.

For those wanting to impress their children with a delightful astronomical sight, this is it. So what is M42? Well, it's a stellar nursery, located some 1,400 light years away, imagine, the light hitting your eyes left the nebula in 616 AD. The nebula is 25 light years across, so is a very large cloud of hydrogen and helium , the stuff that stars are made of. The image shows a group of stars in the centre of the nebula, they are known as the Trapezium. These stars actually shape the nebula with their stellar winds and their light illuminates the cloud so that we can see it. In 100,000 years from now the nebula won't exist as the stars will have dispersed the gas leaving behind a brand new star cluster very much like the Pleiades or 7 sisters that are visible in Taurus.

Football club launches town’s first sports injury clinic Ryman League outfit AFC Sudbury has opened the clinic at its state-of-art Wardale Williams Stadium. The clinic provides knowledgeable, personalised treatment of all sporting injuries and is headed by one of the UK’s most experience sports injury therapists, Brian Swift. Now in his second season with the club Mr Swift obtained his FA Diploma in Sports Injuries whilst as Colchester United Football Club where he spent 13 seasons. He is vastly experienced in a number of sports including football, rugby, cricket, athletics, golf and basketball. During Mr Swift’s varied career he has worked with many well-known professional and amateur sports people including weightlifter Zoe Newson who won a bronze medal at the 2012 Paralympics.

“We noticed there was nowhere in Sudbury which has a clinic dedicated solely to sporting injury and yet there is a huge sporting community in the town. We felt the club was the perfect place to set up the clinic and we look forward to providing this specialised service to the people of Sudbury and the surrounding area,” he said. Sudbury Hypnosis Episode IV: A New Therapy Room Back in 2014 I was working from various locations around Suffolk, building my reputation as a hypnotherapist. After a series of searches for the perfect place to work I became resident at a local gym. It was a great place for many reasons, but it still wasn¹t ideal. The dream was to get my own place, but everywhere I saw that was within my budget was either too far out of town, too large, or had some other kind of compromise.

In early 2015 I found out about a property on Gainsborough Street in the centre of Sudbury. I went and had a look and its was a lovely old building, but it needed a fair bit of work and it was still too big for me on my own anyway.

By pure chance I had a friend that was looking for an office space. It occurred to me that maybe we could rent the place together, it would be perfect!

Enthusiasm builds I mentioned the idea to my friend and he thought it was a great idea. I also knew a physiotherapist that needed to find a space to work, and he said he would be happy to rent a room from me a couple of times a week.

As my prospective new business partner and I were in the process of doing the sums, I mentioned this idea to a number of other therapists, all of who thought it was a good idea, and so Gainsborourgh Therapy Rooms was born.

Gainsborough Therapy Rooms, Open for business It took a lot of work to get the place up and running. We had to do a number of repairs, clean from top to bottom, replace all sorts of bits (including almost every light fitting in the place!), but eventually the building was fit for use.

In June 2015 I saw my first hypnotherapy client in Gainsborough Therapy Rooms and a week later our (now resident) physio began working here the place was up and running!

Into the future We now have 2 fully kitted out therapy rooms, with recliners, massage beds, sound system and everything else a therapist might need. We¹re getting a good variety of therapists using the place now too, we¹ve even had Buddhist meditation class.

New service in Stowmarket offers gentle earwax removal Every year in the UK, approximately 2.3m people experience problems with earwax and need to have it removed.

With more and more GP Surgeries now not offering wax removal services or having long delays to get an appointment, one local hearing care company spotted an opportunity to help people in Stowmarket. The Hearing Care Centre, based locally at StowHealth in Stowmarket, is now offering microsuction, a safe, gentle and non-invasive technique to remove earwax. It is performed with the aid of an operating microscope and a finely calibrated suction device, without the introduction of any materials or liquids.

Market Leaders in Pet Food Home Delivery

...from Jenny Antill The New Year brings the second stage of the introduction of high speed broadband services to Suffolk. The first contract was delivered on time and on budget. The second aims to bring the service from 85% to 95% of Suffolk premises by the end of 2018.

This is mixed news for a rural area such as Cosford, and difficult for me since for every satisfied customer I meet, I find another who is still struggling with a sub optimal service. I wish that I could give residents more certainty with regard to when high speed broadband will arrive in their area. Unfortunately however the Better Broadband website (www.betterbroadbandsuffolk.com) currently only gives information up to September 2016. The lack of more detail is due to a regulatory problem caused by the EU. The situation should become clearer as the year progresses and in the spring a series of information meetings will be held to discuss options with residents. I will be advertising these on my website (address below).

For the present, a quick look at the map shows that many areas of Nedging and Naughton, Kersey, and also Cockfield can hope for coverage within the next nine months. It is important to note that faster speeds will not happen automatically. When the service becomes available people must contact a service provider and sign a new contract to make the switch. Other areas, such as Brettenham and Thorpe Morieux do not look so promising. However, limited help for some is at hand. Where a home receives a speed lower than 2 mps, and no high speed service is likely within 12 months, an interim satellite alternative will be made available. A guide and application form for this scheme can be found on the Better Broadband website.

Hi! My name is Kathrine, also known as Mopsy, and Motivate Me Personal Training is about my passion to help others get fit in a fun and inspiring way!

As a Premier qualified Level 3 Personal Trainer, I’m combining my experience of motivating others from 9 ½ years as a British Army officer with my own love of sport and fitness.

You can gain so much from exercise, both mentally and physically, and I believe that anyone can achieve these benefits, whatever their starting point or ability.

My goal is to help motivate you in a supportive, not drillmaster, way to achieve these benefits through 1:1 Personal Training and group Circuit Classes.

Everyone is different. So, as part of your 1:1 Personal Training programme, we will work together to set your own exercise and nutritional goals based on where you are now and where you want to get to. Yes, this will take your hard work and determination but I will be there with you every step of the way! I also run an ‘open’ Circuit Class every Friday that anyone can join as well as provide bespoke Circuit Classes for small groups of friends and colleagues at times to suit them, such as the Kersey Primary School teachers, above.

Location for training is flexible, either at your home or my own bespoke training space, pictured, now available just outside Hadleigh.

I truly believe it is possible, and important, to balance the demands of daily life with getting fit to help you feel better in yourself. Phoenix Trees at Orchard Barn At Orchard Barn we aim not to waste anything, so when we needed to move a mass of well-rotted, organic debris from one part of the site we had to find a good home for it.

In the orchard were a couple of phoenix trees, apple trees that probably blew over in the gales of Oct 1987 and continued to grow, which needed weed suppression to give them a chance to thrive.

Lots of old newspaper was soaked in a tub of water and then laid several sheets thick over an area around each tree. The debris was then piled on top. Not only will the newspaper prevent all but the most persistent weeds from seeing daylight but the debris will add to the nutrients in the soil around each tree. We hope that by piling the debris up around the fallen trunks that new growth (roots and shoots) will be encouraged.

DON’T FORGET MOTHER’S DAY

Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers January saw 21 walkers take the long route to the Kersey Bell in beautiful weather for a delightful lunch following which, suitably refreshed, we walked the Monk’s Path back to Haleigh in the rain!

Our February walk will take place on Saturday 13th. We will catch the 0942 bus at the Hadleigh Bus Station (car park side) towards Sudbury. We will start at the Halfords roundabout on entering Sudbury and will then walk to Chilton Hall, Cuckoo Tye, Long Melford, Brundon, Ballingdon and end up at Sudbury Bus Station for the 2pm bus back to Hadleigh. The walk is 8 miles and everyone, including well behaved dogs, is welcome. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as, being winter, the ground can be wet, muddy and rough in places. Route maps can be emailed on request to anyone interested.

The Hadleigh Ram takes on World Record Quiz Attempt Organised by PubAid, the World’s Biggest Quiz takes place on Sunday 7 February at 7.30pm where thousands of pub quiz goers across the country will be simultaneously answering the same questions in an attempt to create a new Guinness World Record.

All restaurants and pubs taking part will be fundraising for good causes, and the Hadleigh Ram is no exception, with plans to support charity Macmillan Cancer Support during the event. Lorna Pissarro runs the Hadleigh Ram with her family. She said: “Being part of something so big it could break a world record is really quite something and we are all very excited about taking part. It is the perfect opportunity to have some fun, enjoy some great food and raise money for a very important cause.

The Hadleigh Ram's quiz will be hosted by regular quizmaster Mark Mason and a three course dinner will be served during the event. Tickets cost £25 per person. There will also be a raffle to help raise money for Macmillan, a cause regularly supported by Lorna and her family, who also run the Long Melford Swan and the Lavenham Greyhound.

Formed in 2009, PubAid is a volunteer working party dedicated to celebrating the great work done by UK pubs for charity.

Save our Planet and Save your Money If you want to see climate change then visit the Mer du Glace, or ‘Sea of Ice’ glacier near Chamonix in France. I have been mountaineering for over 30 years and I first stepped on the glacier in the late eighties, when the ice was just a short walk down from the old Victorian era railway station. To reach the glacier in 2015 required a short cable car descent followed by a hard 15-min trek down nearly 400 vertical steps. The world’s scientists attribute climate change to global warming caused by too much carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. Whether you agree with the scientists or not, surely it cannot be sensible to continue to pollute our atmosphere.

Growing up in the mill town of Bolton I vividly remember the many enormous mills with huge chimneys belching out grey and black smoke into the sky. Even as a child I thought this was madness. Thankfully the world is starting to wake up to the reality and much needed action is being taken. The Paris summit late last year was a great success and achieve global agreement on a way forward, although there is still a long way to go. The UK’s commitment to achieving carbon cuts has been a great success. The introduction of clean energy incentive schemes has really had an impact and the UK has already achieved the targets it set for 2020. But as I say there is still a lot to do.

One of my heroes is David Attenborough and you cannot help but be amazed by his incredible natural world programmes. He has long been an advocate of positive action to save the planet and is currently supporting a project called the Global Apollo Programme.

This 10-year project aims to co-ordinate international research and development and discover breakthrough clean technologies.

You can do your bit by thinking about your own energy use and considering your options for the future. The Sun provides us with 5000 times more energy that we could ever use and it makes perfect sense to try to use that. By using solar PV systems we can generate clean electricity which will be the primary fuel of the future. If you chose to adopt solar PV as a energy source not only will you be saving the planet, but you will also be saving on your domestic energy bills and so this is a win-win situation.

Every kilowatt-hour of electricity that you generate using solar PV is currently worth nearly 21p (Feb 2016 figures). A typical domestic system could generate 3800 kilowatt-hours during the first year, therefore potentially saving you £800.

Art In The Afternoon Hadleigh Art Club continue to meet in the Hadleigh Library Seminar Room on Tuesday at 2pm. A programme is created to feed ideas to members who are stuck for a subject. Mindfulness is gaining popularity the world over - it combines meditation, breathing techniques and paying attention to the present moment to help us change the way we think, feel and act about our daily life experiences. It works wonders for de-stressing and can be practiced by anyone, anywhere- you don’t have to follow any particular religion or be odd to use mindfulness.

News from Whatfield School Our wonderful Whatfield children, past and present, were celebrating their fantastic results, published recently in the Department for Education league tables. Their hard work meant the school was placed top Primary School in Suffolk according to the Telegraph performance table, and in the top 150 schools in the country according to the Times. This is a tribute to the hard work of the pupils, staff and parents.

We thoroughly enjoyed meeting James Cartlidge MP recently. He has children of his own attending a Suffolk Primary School, and this showed as he chatted to the children, and in particular the school council. Pupils asked interesting and perceptive questions, relating their experience of democracy when electing their school counsellors to the elections last May. He explained some of the conventions of Parliament and what it was like to ask a question at Prime Minister’s question time. He could also tell the pupils what the Queen looked like close up! They asked him many questions, ranging from ‘What kind of face did you make when you found out you had been elected?’ to ‘What are you doing about Syria?’

We have been really pleased to continue with our new Maths scheme, ‘Maths, No Problem!’ based on the Singapore Bar method of calculation. Our school is one of a few pioneers, as the scheme is very new, but it has been enthusiastically received by pupils across the school, and follows advice to ensure that pupils have access to practical materials to aid understanding. So far so good! Lots of exciting events have taken place this term, including some very special enrichment activities, which meant that our pupils have had access to some fantastic opportunities.

We have taken part in Dance workshops lead by Northern Ballet, as well as enjoying opportunities to play Basketball at Hadleigh High School, reading at Elmsett and accepting a maths challenge from Kersey.

This term Staff and Pupils have been excited to take on the International Primary Curriculum, which will help the children develop skills across the curriculum , as well as continue to develop a world view, as the topics always have a global dimension. We have started really positively, and as we go through the year will keep you updated on some of the brilliant things we have learnt about.

This year’s Big School Birdwatch was a cold but exciting event, with a surprising amount of birds evident in our large school grounds. We always enjoy taking time to enjoy the wildlife in our beautiful Suffolk countryside, and it is amazing how long young children can wait silently if they are involved in the activity. Our results will be posted on the RSPB website.

Come and meet author Debby Holt Author Debby Holt will be talking about her latest novel, The Soulmate, on Saturday, March 19, 11:15 a.m at Hadleigh Library.

The novel follows the experiences of 63-yearold widower, Henry, and his 35-year-old daughter, Maddie, as they try to find new partners. Henry lives in Higgleigh, a town in Suffolk that bears an uncanny resemblance to Hadleigh. Debby has drawn on the experiences of her friends and adult offspring for her new book. December 30th saw a somewhat sad farewell to the children who had been with us in December for our first ever Christmas group visit of first time travellers. I am delighted to report that this was a great success. I would like to extend my thanks to the host Families for their generosity and selflessness in reaching out to these children despite their own family commitments. Also a very big thank you to their children who so unselfishly let complete strangers share their family time at Christmas.

During the visit many new experiences were enjoyed and again we have been touched by the generosity of our sponsors. What was quite amazing to see was how the group were so dedicated in making their memory books, recording minute details and saving scraps for mementos that we would discard without a second thought. The children who my husband & I hosted would spend long hours into the evening working on their memory books rather than watching TV. The children also liked to play traditional board games and spending quality time with their Host families meant so much to them, this is something they do miss out on a lot at home. Even the smallest of gifts became a treasured item to take home, wrapping paper, cards and bows all being carefully saved as well. A link to a short video showing the activities that took place during the month can be seen on our website.

We heard that everyone arrived home safely in time to celebrate the New Year with their families, this is a very important celebration for the people in Belarus.

However they did get a bit of a shock returning to temperatures as low as minus 22 degrees after having spent the previous 4 weeks in our mild weather.

Unless the temperature reaches minus 25 they will still return to school as usual with many of them walking both to and from school on their own and in the dark. All of the families of the children sent their thanks to our Host families and there were comments on how children had returned home more confident and enthusiastic after their visit and with a more positive outlook for the future.

We now look forward to the 2016 group visit which takes place in July. We do hope that you will be able to support our forthcoming Fund Raising events to make sure this can take place. Last month I mentioned our Pig Racing evening on 13th February to be held at the Football Club in Needham Market and am pleased to report that CHOCOLATE BINGO returns on Saturday March 5th, many people said they missed our not having the November event so get your tickets as soon as possible as this is sure to be a big nite as always. For those of you who are not familiar with this event it is a great family night out, see our advert for full details. Tickets are now on sale.

Living with Dying - May 14th 2016 As we are now in 2016 the plans for this ‘one day’, information giving event are well under way. We have a whole host of different businesses and charities who will be available for you to speak to in St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh, from 10am–4pm. Our aim is to give you as much help and information as we can regarding, ‘End of Life Care’ and ‘what needs to happen when someone dies?’

So many people have little idea of the legalities, or the process, or the options available for either scenario. Put the date in your diary to come and spend an hour or so touring the different stands and speaking to those who can help and inform you. So far we can confirm the following being present – Co-Op Funeral Directors, Gotelee Solicitors, Hadleigh Baptist Church, Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance, Hadleigh Health Centre, Hadleigh URC, Hadleigh Town Council (Traditional, Woodland or Green Burials), St Mary’s Church, Suffolk Cruse, Talking Therapies, The Ram, Waterfield House Care Home and Waterstones Book Shop.

When you come on the 14th you will also receive a bag with added information from organisations such as the Police (involvement in sudden deaths), Organ Donation, Seven Hills Crematorium plus much more.

This year we have 2 additional interesting attractions for you.

Firstly we have exhibitions in St Mary’s from Tuesday 10th May – Thursday 19th May. ‘Good Grief?’ -panel’s of embroidery sewn by a lady expressing her grief on the death of her husband. ‘Bald Statements’ – large heads depicting the facial expressions of the artist’s feelings when she was diagnosed with, and going through her treatment, for cancer. We will also have floral displays done by local groups on the theme of ‘Death’ and ‘End of Life Care’. Entrance to the exhibitions will be £1 on each day except Saturday 14th when the whole day is free of charge.

Secondly, we have 5 x 45 minute ‘Masterclasses’ in the Guildroom at the Guildhall. We have booked representatives from Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance, Co-op Funeral Service, SIFRE (Suffolk Interfaith Resource), Gotelee Solicitors and Suffolk Cruse. Each will be available for you to go, free of charge, to hear what they have to say. Ten Minutes to Change Your Life!

The event is free to attend. The British Heart Foundation encourages us all to consider taking control of our own heart health, and this is a great time of year to decide to make even the smallest of changes that can have an impact. The following is just a small section of the vast range of advice they offer.

Being active helps keep your heart healthy. If you are active every day you’ll be less likely to develop coronary heart disease. You are in control – by taking ten minutes a few times a day to get active, you could change your life. Being active helps lower your risk of coronary heart disease because it exercises your heart, helping to keep it strong; helps lower your cholesterol and helps lower your blood pressure, which means your arteries are less likely to clog up.

It can also help you feel more relaxed, have more energy and give you a sense of achievement.

However, being active doesn’t have to mean running a marathon, or swimming like an Olympic champion - gentle, everyday activities like walking, and climbing stairs are great ways to get started, and will help to lead you on to more structured and challenging exercises, which you can build into a routine.

What can I do? Make small changes like walking rather than driving, and taking the stairs instead of the lift or escalator. Take a walk every day – to work, to the shop, or to see a friend; set a date and take your kids, grandchildren, pets or friends to the park.

Time to push it! The type of activity that helps your heart the most will make you feel warmer, breathe harder and make your heart beat faster than usual.

What can I do?

- Set aside some time in your week for activities like brisk walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, exercise classes or team sports like football or netball.

- Aim to work up to at least 150 minutes of this type of activity a week. You can spread this out over the week however you like.

Remember – every ten minutes counts. These are suggestions for generally healthy adults. If you have any health issues please talk to your doctor before you start any new activities.

Kersey Mill Newsletter January has seen the continuation of the repairs to the main frame with huge amounts of timber arriving from the Thetford area. Timber has been used to construct buildings for centuries, roofs, flooring, joists, posts, windows and doors, building like Kersey Mill that are completely timber framed would have been built from materials sourced locally.

Structural timber repairs are very much at the forefront of the current restorations works supported by Historic England. Some of the main timbers failed as a result of years of water ingress, moisture causes such decay and allows rot to drastically reduce the strength of the timber, some massive timbers completely disappeared and of others, only dust remains.

The main structural timbers that we are currently repairing were so heavy and strong as their main role was to support the load from the grain storage bins that would have been loaded with as much as 100 tons at their capacity. Clearly the mill is unlikely to ever carry such weight again but our aim is to repair like for like and to do the minimum that we can. This is the same approach that was taken when repairing the waterwheel. If it can be repaired Photographed are some of the spliced or scarfed then it is, we want new joists over the boulter. to achieve a repaired building containing as much of the original fabric as possible. You can see in the photograph one complete new vertical timber and the 2 scarfed ends of 2 horizontal tie beams.

When working on the mill it becomes very apparent how many different repairs have happened over the past two hundred years. There is oak flooring to parts of the front elevation, whilst the back newer section of flooring which was added to the original mill around 1860 is all pine.

Repairing failed structural timbers is, of course, not a new practice. For centuries Photograph is of a cup handle repairs have been fashioned using now visible on the boulter in carpentry methods or with blacksmith- the shape of a belt and buckle made splints, brackets and ties, and these ancient repairs certainly add character and help tell the story of the building again wherever we can retain original metal work and use again we will.

We have also taken into consideration the impact of any particular repair. If the timber were removed, how much damage or loss of fabric would occur around it?

We have launched the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Amazing Maisie Appealâ&#x20AC;? on JustGiving to help fund life changing treatment for a long suffering dog. Maisie the Springer endured seven years of pain and could hardly walk due to a birth defect. She certainly couldn't run and for a Springer that is horrendous.

Upon her arrival at SESAW our vet, Simon, diagnosed the problem and performed life changing surgery. A few days later, Mum was hand feeding her with Christmas dinner as Maisie faced six weeks of bed rest.

She already manages so much better and rewards her carers with a lick as her dressings are changed. If you could say a dog was smiling, that's Amazing Maisie. Well, how wet did you get? What a start to the ‘Spring’ Term its been! We normally expect to cancel some rides at this time of year because of ice and snow; being in a mud bath is not normal for us. Aren’t we lucky to be on a hill in this lovely valley and not living in Cumbria! A picture of Bob looking sodden in deep mud in the back yard says it all I think.

When the weather makes riding too horrible, our riders are kept busy doing their ‘Stable Management’ courses. The RDA has a good programme of Proficiency Tests which many of our clients take. Graded ‘What are they doing to my from 1-4 in Riding and Horse Care, we tail?’ asks Rocky! regularly award certificates to people, especially the boys from Hampden House who ride with us on Thursdays. We shall be encouraging our youngsters to enter the RDA Arts and Crafts competition too, the judging of which takes place at the RDA Annual Championships in Hartpury in July. Then there is the ASDAN programme in which we develop, record and reward young people’s personal achievements.

If you are able to gain all four proficiency tests whilst with the Shelley Centre, there is yet more challenging stuff ahead. Some of you may have been at the Hadleigh Lighting up Ceremony back in December? Did you visit our stand on the grass outside the URC? (I hear there were two donkeys there!!!) Twins Nathaniel and Rowan were ambassadors for the Centre; now young men at college, they started riding with us when they were 7 years old.

Having passed all 4 grades in Horse Care and Riding they went on to the next level and took Bronze before leaving us. This was truly an amazing achievement but not content with that they are now working towards their Silver. This entails taking an afternoon off college to attend the Shelley Centre and work on this next level. We are all so proud of them! We are looking forward to more good results from our Bob, fed up with the mud, won’t riders who take part in the Dessage look at the camera.

Anywhere; they can video their entry and have it adjudicated without having to box up a horse and go somewhere else: that’s technology for you. Technology is where I come in of course, I’m the lucky one who can’t get wet and muddy as I live in my own dry room and just watch the wet horses and ponies coming in to get ready for their work. I get to meet all our riders over the winter months because they come to me for a quick piece of physiotherapy or to hone their trotting skills. So there is plenty of activity afoot, the ponies are back in their work routine, the volunteers are being brilliant as always, Lyn is keeping her eye on us all (including the eyes in the back of her head) and its business as usual. Our January meeting saw four of our members take ‘centre stage’ to give a brief talk on a gardening subject close to their hearts. It was again good to welcome some new people to our merry band.

First up was Dave who explained how his regular gardening column input to ‘talking newspapers’ worked.

This is a wonderful voluntary service for the blind which Dave has been involved with The members in the photograph are from for many years. left to right - Brian Partridge, Andy Leeder, Next was John who Dave de Negri and John Wild entertained us with stories from his time as a competition judge at horticultural shows, noting that more than once he has come across errant entries of shop bought produce, or even silk flowers from folk who try just a little too hard to win!

Third was Brian who gave a brief overview of his lifelong passion for alpine plants, showing us pictures of an alpine garden at the top of a mountain in Austria. I rounded things off with an overview of my own journey from working in an office to becoming a gardener.

Next month we return to having visiting guest speakers when Andrew Brogan from the Henstead Exotic Garden will be giving a presentation. This will be on Monday February 8th at 7.30pm in Hadleigh Town Hall. The entrance fee is just £1 for members and £3 for non-members. We hope to see you there.

Join the Big Hospice Sewing Bee St Elizabeth Hospice is looking for local crafters to join the Big Hospice Sewing Bee and compete to turn a used item of clothing into a cutting edge masterpiece.The competition will run from Friday 12 February to Monday 14 March, giving you just over a month to perfect your upcycled garment. You can change the item into a completely different garment, or upcycle it, transforming it with embellishments, or adding/taking away pieces of material and haberdashery accessories.

The finalists will be chosen by a panel of experts at an awards event and those with the best designs will then compete live on Saturday 19 March to win the overall title of the Big Hospice Sewing Bee Champion – and a fantastic prize!

Fiona Ginn, St Elizabeth Hospice’s partnerships fundraiser, said: “The Big Hospice Sewing Bee is a fantastic opportunity for you to use your creative, sewing and haberdashery skills in this exciting new event, whilst supporting your local hospice.

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts I have decided that this will be the last Garden Column that I write. My health deteriorated significantly over the Christmas Season, and this will restrict the gardening that I can do in future, so I have decided that this would be a good time to stop. I started writing the column in 1988 when it looked as though the Garden Club (Then Hadleigh Horticultural Society) was about to close down.

Happily it recovered and is still running successfully today.

My other thoughts at the moment are the crazy effects of the weather on our gardens. As I write this some parts of the country are reporting early displays of snowdrops and daffodils. I have none of these out but on New Years Day I did a count, and found flowers on the following 31 plants in my garden :Flowering properly: Jasminum nudiflorum, Viburnum x bodnantense, Chimonanthus praecox, Lonicera fragrantisima, Chanomeles x suberba, Mahonia, Heather, Rosemary, An ornamental plum/cherry, Rockery campanula (2 different), Primrose, Hebe (2 Different), Leucojum aestivum, Mauve Perennial Wallflower. Isolated Flowers: Begonia semperflorens, Gazania, Strawberry, Loganberry, Muscari, Calendula, Chrysanthemum, Nerine, Rose, Violet, Abelia grandiflorum, Gailardia, Oesteospermum, Berberis darwinii.

I usually do a count for a newsgroup that I follow, but usually the list stops somewhere about ten. The first three in the lists are reliable early flowering plants that I would expect to see. The rest are mainly in two categories:- (a) survivors because of the lack of hard frosts and (b) plants that are flowering early. I am also very relieved that although our gardens are very wet at the moment, we have not had the floods that they have had in the North. Now in January we are starting to get some colder weather, and there have been a few flakes of snow. I wonder how the "early" plants will like this.

Weather Records In December at Kersey there was 47.8 mm (1.9”) of rain which is close to our average monthly rainfall. The 3 monthly total at the end of December was 160.7 mm (6.3”) which is slightly higher than the average figure. The December rainfall figures complete another year. We had 550.9 mm (21.7”) of rain in 2015. This 84% of the annual average rainfall taken over the last 17 years. In December the maximum temperature was 14 Cel (57F) which is about 3 degrees higher than the average.figure for the month. The minimum temperature was 3 Cel (37F) which is nearly 7 degrees warmer than the average for the month. There has only beeb one other occasion since 1999 when the lowest temperature for December has been above freezing point.

Hints I thought hard about tips for February, and came to the conclusion that for most people because of the weather the following tips are applicable. (a) Any Hard Landscaping that you want to do. If you get it done now, then you can enjoy it in the Summer. (b) Clear up any dead plants from the summer (preferably to a compost heap), and clean garden paths that are slippery due to fallen leaves and algae. Wash up empty pots and clean glass in greenhouse or cold frame. (c) Prune fruit trees (NOT plum), and late flowering summer shrubs (NOT the early ones like Forsythia and Kerria, or you will lose the flowers.) (d) Providing we do not get too much rain or hard frost overhaul flower beds containing perennials.

Try and sow a few seeds. If you want to grow potatoes Partridges will have a good selection of Seed Potatoes. If you are more adventurous this year's potato day is at Stonham Barns on 13th of February frm 0930.

Sudbury’s Kinderkid Ken Overman of Sudbury, in his 93rd year, has lived a life somewhat unique in the annals of our townsfolk. A few years ago Ken asked me to pen his biography. Somewhat taken back I replied, “Ken, we’ve been mates some 25 years but except for the fact that you’re Jewish and a Freemason, I know Ken and his wife Stella nothing about you!”. Well, what a tale he in happy retirement had to tell.

Born Kurt Manfred Oppenheimer on the 27th August 1923 in Hungen, Germany. The only thing that set Ken apart from his schoolboy compatriots was his Jewish faith. His father Herman had even bravely fought on the western Front with the German Army throughout the Great War as a Pioneer.

Ken’s childhood up to the age of eleven was somewhat uneventful. Although the Jews had unjustly borne the stigma of being held partly to blame for Germany’s ills (together with financiers, freemasons and others) Ken and other Jews were more scorned and ignored than overtly persecuted. After all, had not Herman Oppenheimer and others of his religion fought bravely for the Kaiser?

In 1938 Ken and his father were rounded up and taken to the local prison where together with all local Jewish men and youths they were forced to run the gauntlet whilst they were brutally beaten by the Nazis, many of whom they had lived among. When finally released they returned to the wreckage of their home. The house had been looted and smashed. Ken’s mother had been assaulted and stabbed in the arm and as she was Jewish the local hospital refused to treat her. For Ken and his father their ordeal had only just begun.

The same month they were shipped to Buchenwald concentration camp to endure more humiliation and beatings, the train stopping at towns and villages en-route to pick up their fellow Jews. Herman and Ken were freed in December but soon Ken was told to leave. Passage to Britain had been arranged for the fifteen- year- old on the famed Kinder transport train, but with the proviso that he depart by the 1st January. As the train was not due to leave until the 5th the local Gestapo continued to harass him until he finally boarded.

The Kinder transport had been formed by Jewish, Quaker and other Christian groups, with the co-operation of the British government, to rescue mainly Jewish children from Nazi Europe. The first party of 200 arrived in Harwich on 2nd December 1938 and by the time war was declared in September 1939 a further 10,000 children had arrived in Britain - a notable and noble achievement by our Parliament and the British people. Many other countries were far more reticent with the United States accepting only about 1,000. Their future value to our society cannot be over estimated. They were later to serve in nursing, the armed forces and the war industry. At least four were to become holders of the Nobel Prize.

The transport parties went by train to Holland and then usually to Harwich.

From that port many were entrained to Liverpool Street Station where they were united with foster parents. A poignant memorial stands today at the station entrance. Unveiled by the great Sir Nicholas Winton who himself had been instrumental in the saving of some 670 children from occupied Czechoslovakia.

But Ken’s life took a different path. He arrived, a fifteen - year old German teenager, at Harwich on the 6th January 1939. To the children life became a disorganised lottery. Many were taken in by families, Jewish and Christian.

The majority had an understanding and kind home life. Some were little more than servants or farm hands. But they were to survive.

Yet no family was keen to adopt a shaven headed teenager from a concentration camp. He was definitely not the prettiest kid in Dovercourt’s Warner’s holiday camp, temporarily used as a refugee centre with the proviso that the camp would be empty and pristine in order to accommodate the summer’s English holidaymakers. Few had prophesied the advent of hostilities!

Ken and the other remaining residents were dispersed to various hostels across the Home Counties. The North Kensington Jewish community had opened a hostel in St. Marks Road and from there he was sent to a Jewish school to learn English. And as for the Dovercourt camp? Before its subsequent demolition for a housing site it served as the set for the famed TV comedy series Hi de Hi. With the outbreak of war with their homeland they believed that they would be readily accepted as allies in the fight against Fascism. Far from it. They were still treated, as many immigrants since, with suspicion and sometimes outright hostility.

Being under 16 Ken was graded as a Friendly Enemy Alien (who thought that one up?) and was spared internment. He soon found employment as a watch - glass fitter near Hatton Garden. The majority of refugees were encouraged to join the Pioneer Corps. Ken steadfastly refused, he wanted to fight Germans! He finally got his chance when in October 1943 he was to enlist in the Royal Armoured Corps.

Following training Ken was sent to Egypt where he was to see out his war

service. Stationed near Cairo his services as an interpreter were often called upon at the adjacent German Prisoner of War camp but although desperate of news from his homeland none of the inmates were of Hungen.

As a driver/mechanic he was soon a corporal, serving on Shermans and the superior Comet tanks. His service record was exemplary, medical category A1. Promoted to Sergeant in March 1947 Ken was discharged and transferred to the reserve in October of that year.

However, after his discharge from the Army Ken returned to Hungen. He found his family home was by now occupied by a neighbour who had purchased it from the wartime government for a pittance. Some miserly compensation was paid to Ken and his sisters but he had no desire to remain there. But one memory still haunted him. He demanded of the Burgomaster the location of his mother’s stolen piano. Having ascertained the guilty party he demanded and got due restitution for same. It wasn’t the money, just the satisfaction of getting some small compensation from those who had looted his home.

Upon reverting to civilian life the entrepreneur in him came through. After a varied career in the catering industry and the wall paper business he was to purchase a property in South London which he then converted into selfcontained flats. This scheme being profitable he expanded with a further site in Islington and then purchased Crofton House in Sudbury, Suffolk, all converted to flats.

Ken had moved to Long Melford where he was to join the local Conservative party and serve as a district councillor, assuming the poison chalice as chairman of the planning committee, not a move to court popularity! But Ken, as always, brought openness and honesty to the role. At this time he embraced freemasonry, and quietly and with dignity he made his way through the ranks, perfecting his ritual and serving as Master in 1994. He became a noted resident of his adopted community, a member of the Long Melford breakfast club and history society and served as president of the local Gainsborough Probus club. It was while campaigning as a prospective councillor for Babergh District Council that Ken was to make his mark. Long Melford’s primary school, having closed, was put up for sale by Suffolk County Council. The building was well used by the village hosting youth groups, play schools and the like. Ken formed and chaired the Community Association and fundraising got underway with countless begging letters going out to local worthies and groups.

Thankfully the building was saved and by judiciously disposing of the adjoining headmasters and caretakers accommodation the old school was put on a firm financial footing for future generations.

Today, some twenty years later, it is a great asset to the village, hosting book and antique sales and many groups and associations. Ken’s foresight was recognised by his fellow villagers by him being appointed Life Vice President of the Long Melford Community Association.

To Ken it was his way of repaying his debt to both his adopted country and to the village for the many years of happy retirement he had enjoyed there. Today, that well used asset is a standing reminder of how our “Kinderkid”, like so many others, served his adopted land. Thankfully Ken’s four siblings were to survive and flourish. But his parents, grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins were to die in Theresienstadt and Auschwitz.

And as for my Brother and friend Ken. Now in his nineties he lives, quietly retired in his adopted Sudbury, with his wife Stella. Recently he has suffered ill health but for one of his advanced years he still attends his Probus and Masonic lodge meetings. He and his few remaining contempories are a living reminder to us all that the evil of Fascism was defeated and that such, to quote the words of Churchill, “a perverted science”, must never again be acceptable among civilised men. They are the men, and women, who were to prevail so that human decency could again flourish. Without their sacrifice we would today be living as a subjugated race.

I know that Ken is very reticent regarding those dark times but without his courage in reliving those days this story could not have been written. Ken, and the other Kinderkids, have enriched our society, as have many immigrants to my country. But above all his tale should stand as a warning against At Liverpool Street Station, “The Kinderkids” intolerance and racism.

And why did I write Ken’s biography, well I am minded of the words and deeds of that great liberator, General Dwight Eisenhower, supreme commander of the allied troops in Europe. At the liberation of the camps he forced the neighbouring populous to see for themselves the evil carried out in their name.

He summoned the world media and press to witness and photograph the horrors they had exposed and when asked why he wisely prophesised, “Because at some time in the future some son of a bitch is going to deny that this ever happened”.

And perhaps, in some small way our dear friend Ken’s account will confirm that great General’s words and serve as a warning to generations to come.

Stoke by Nayland GC Seniors’ American Greensomes In difficult weather conditions the Stoke by Nayland green staff did well to prepare the Constable Course for the Seniors’ American Greensomes competition, which was played all on main greens.

The SBN Committee has sanctioned the use of a ‘Divotend’ in competitions to aid play in winter conditions and to prevent damage to the course. The greenkeepers have noticed a real Roger Davies, Seniors’ Captain difference on both courses with Lionel Hatch, Alan Line less divots. The winners were Roger Davies and Alan Line with a creditable 34 points. In second place were Roger Fleuty and Tony Reeves with 33 points, on count back, from Alan Austin and Keith Oxborrow.

Winter League The Stoke by Nayland Winter League has reached the knock out stages after 11 leagues played with the winners and runners up going through. They have been joined by the best third place teams to give 22 pairs in the final stages. The matches have to be played by the 7th February; the format is 4 Ball Betterball matchplay.

Mail on Sunday Classic The Stoke by Nayland Ladies team has a bye in the first round of the Mail on Sunday Classic. The men have been drawn, at home, to play Colchester Golf Club on 6th February.

Bildeston Carpet Bowls Club The club started 2016 with the introduction of a member’s pair’s competition. Sixteen players took part playing 4 bowls over 7 ends The final was contested between Sue Cousins & Martin Wheal and Trevor Sharp and Keith Sillett.

With sue and Martin the eventual winners. The club is at the halfway stage of the winter league with 5 home and 2 away games to play.

At the beginning of February the club has 2 games in the first round of the Suffolk plate competition.

The club entered 2 teams for the Suffolk charity fours in aid of the Clik Sergeant children’s cancer charity. The day was a great success with 45 teams from 5 counties competing in 9 groups. The event raised just under £1300.

The club players did not come away with any trophies but enjoyed a great days bowling. The club plays its home games on a Tuesday evening and visitors are welcome to come and watch and have a cup of tea.

Newton Green appoints New Manager The new manager of Newton Green Golf Club will be 27-year-old Ben Tawell. A six handicap golfer, he has performed a number of administrative roles at Rushmere Golf Club, Ipswich, where he has played in the Stenson and Hambro teams. His father Bob is club manager at Rushmere, and Ben takes up his place at Newton in the New Year. He succeeds the retired Carole List. Ben has been at Rushmere for nine years, after gaining A levels at Copleston High School, and his move to Newton means he will have to give up his parttime role as a coach at the Ipswich Town Youth Academy.

With his partner Rachel, he has two young children, and has recently been looking to develop his career by attending golf management training. He said: “At Rushmere I have been able to achieve a solid grounding in all roles of the sport, from working with the green keepers, bar management and administration. “Newton Green is a club which has been moving forward impressively in recent years and the appointment gives me the chance to help the club continue on that path.”

Stoke-by-Nayland Ladies Golf Section Sadly the golf courses at Stoke-by-Nayland are suffering along with everything else due to the heavy rain experienced over the past several weeks.

Thursday, 9th January was scheduled for a 9 holes competition to be followed by a social event. The golf part of the day was cancelled as the courses were deemed too slippery and wet to be enjoyable. However, the social event went ahead with Lady From left, Annie Major, Ladies Secretary, Captain, Betty Cox, providing Lilian Osbourne, social member an amusing and entertaining and Lady Captain Betty Cox afternoon which included a Guess the Theme Tunes quiz, a special raffle prize of a massage which she provided herself, and a tombola. Many of the ladies had baked cakes for all to enjoy and together with tea and coffee a light lunch was enjoyed by all.

It was a very friendly and well attended social with approximately 30 ladies present who appreciated being inside whilst watching the rain pound against the windows.
