Work to start on new £2.4m Hadleigh Facility! Work on a brand-new multi-million pound community facility for the residents of Hadleigh and surrounding villages is finally due to start. Babergh District Council is delighted to announce that groundwork preparations on the Hadleigh Community Facility are due to begin on land off Stonehouse Road, in the town, later this month. Hadleigh residents have been waiting for two years for the £2.4m two-storey unit comprising a dance studio, gym and a community room to be built on land near the town’s swimming pool. It is hoped that the new facility will be open to the public by late summer of 2012. In 2009, Babergh had to delay building work in order to comply with, what was then, a comparatively new piece of legislation. A provision in the Commons Act (2006) meant that the Council had to delay any building work to allow a two-year period to elapse during which applications could be considered as to whether some of the land needed for the facility could be classed as a ‘ town green’. This deadline has now passed. Members of Babergh’s Strategy Committee gave the go ahead in January for money for the scheme to be released - even though nothing would happen on site for a number of months – to ensure minimal delays once

the project could finally go ahead. In February, South Suffolk Leisure Trust - which already runs Hadleigh’s swimming pool on Babergh’s behalf - was awarded management of the new facility when it is built. Cllr. Nick Ridley, who as the previous Chairman of the Strategy Committee played a pivotal role over many years in the process to bring the Hadleigh Community Facility to fruition said: “It’s been a long and sometimes frustratingly slow journey that we have all been on to get to this point, but that makes this moment all the more worthwhile.
