In the main ring there will be two performances from the Blazing Saddles Stunt Team of fast and furious riding – hopefully with the youngest Stunt Rider in the UK – Skye Woodward – joining them.

In the Countryside Ring the Mid-Wales Axe Racing Team will be demonstrating their lumberjacking skills and regular visitor Bob Hogg will be entertaining the crowd with his Sheep Dog demos –and this year he is also bringing his new ‘Racing Sheep’ to compete in the ‘Lamb National’!

Saturday 19th May, Holbecks Park, Hadleigh Hadleigh Show, one of the oldest one-day Agricultural Shows in the country, is about to hold its 173rd event. Organised by Hadleigh Farmers Agricultural Association, this very traditional celebration of the best of rural Suffolk life, promises to be a great day out for everyone!

For the first time ever ADVANCED Show tickets can be purchased ON-LINE, as well as the usual retail outlets. Visitors to the show’s website - www.hadleighshow.co.uk - will be emailed their tickets for printing after payment has been received and on show day enjoy fast-track entry to the ground via the scanning system. For booking up to close of business on Friday 18th May, visitors can take advantage of the ‘Early-Bird Discount’, which reduces a Family Ticket (2 Adults with up to 3 Children) to just £23.00. 2011 ticket prices have been held and parking in fields adjacent to the showground at Holbecks Park, remains free of charge.

Gates open to the general public from 8am on the 19th May and visitors will enjoy all the features of a traditional agricultural show but with one or two surprises.

Hadleigh Show Saturday 19th May, Holbecks Park, Hadleigh There are more than 150 classes of cattle, sheep, goats and horses on show; over 120 trade stands exhibiting; 30 local food and drink producers in the Food Hall and new to the Local Demonstration Tent local chef Mark David will be entertaining everyone with his culinary skills from 10am.

There’s the Art Exhibition and Sale; Rural Crafts and of course the popular Flower Tent, now incorporating a Horticultural section where you can judge for yourself the high quality entries in the various categories.

Displays in the Young Farmers Tent will include exhibits from the new local Clubs; The Junior’s – Brett Valley and the Seniors – Hadleigh YFC. The Schools Tent is growing and with the key role of demonstrating the link between HFAA and schools in the local community. Here visitors can see the 30 shortlisted entries in the competition for local school children to design the cover of this year’s show catalogue, including the winning entry from Amelia Whaley from Hadleigh Community Primary.

There are lots of 'hands on' activities for including milking CLAra the Cow; learning how to grind grain and make dough; a Gun Dog Scurry in which all working dogs are welcome and the 'have a go stands’ with the Clay Pigeon Shoot and Archery - great fun for all the family.

A record crowd attended last year and organisers anticipate a similar turnout on the 19th May 2012. All that still needs to be planned is the weather!

Countryside Walk There will be a Countryside Walk in aid of the Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding on SUNDAY 6TH MAY 2012. Starting from the Shelley Centre, in Layham, near Hadleigh, from 10-11am, there will be scenic walks of approx. 5 or 10 miles on footpaths and country lanes through the beautiful Stour Valley. Free transport back to the Centre for those finishing after 5 miles at the Black Horse, Stratford St Mary.

Hadleigh Castings support Junior Young Farmers Club

Hadleigh Castings Ltd (HCL) was proud to sponsor the opening night of the New Junior Young Farmers Club (YFC) called ‘Brett Valley’ which started on Friday 23rd March 2012. Suffolk YFC have recently started two new clubs in our region – ‘Hadleigh YFC’ for seniors aged 16 – 30 which is held at the Lindsey Red Rose on a Wednesday evening and Brett Valley for the juniors aged 10 – 16 held fortnightly at Semer Village Hall on Fridays. Clare Lock, Business Services Director of HCL went along to help run the evening along with Tory the County Fieldworker for Suffolk.

Both Tory and Clare had met each other and their respective husbands through Young Farmers Clubs within Suffolk and were eager to pass on both the social and personal advantages of being a member of such a great organisation. 16 eager fresh faced youngsters turned up on the first night and enjoyed having a go at designing a logo for their club. Clare had purchased some fabric paints and a patchwork banner and everyone had two squares to fill in before they were admired and laced together to form a large banner of their artwork. The photo shows the finished work at the end of their first night which will now be displayed at the Young Farmers Marquee at the Hadleigh Show on Saturday 19th May this year.

Rix Family say thanks to you all On behalf of Nick, Tim, Rebecca and all of the Rix family I would like to pass on our sincere thanks to everyone for the support, kindness and generosity that you have shown us all since the sudden death of mum and Josh. We will never be able to express how greatful we are to you all and there are to many people for us to thank individually. We could never have expected to have been supported in the way we have been by you all. The fundraising day raised just under £5000 with donations from the Hadleigh Thrift Shop and Hadleigh Football club helping us reach the target. Our thanks also go to Sudbury Rugby Club, Hadleigh Cricket Club, James Hellyer (James Daniel Salon) and Freya Partridge who have also raised money to go towards helping with bringing Josh home and also setting up a trust fund for Josh's son Alfie.

Thanks to everyone that made the fundraising day a resounding success, you all know who you are. Thanks to everyone that has either donated prizes or donated money through the church or bank account, it is most greafully appreciated. We have also been able to send £370 to Great Ormond Street Hospital in memory of mum, thank you to everyone that donated to this as it was a cause very close to mum's heart.

Hadleigh Community News goes global!

Paul, Dai and Marc (author), a few of the Hadleigh crew It's official. The Hadleigh Community News is now an international publication! You may have believed that soldiers from all over the UK and Commonwealth would have far more pressing concerns on their minds than reading a magazine from Hadleigh ........ you would be wrong! The fairly strong contingent of military personnel in and around the town have been here now for quite some time. Many are only here for a short period but some of us are growing roots. Despite the rumoured 25year trail period to become truly "local" all are very proud to call Hadleigh our home.

Reading the Community News brings a bit of home to us whilst in Afghanistan reminding us of the real world outside. With the average temperature hitting the 40's out here now many drool at the thought of a cold cask of bitter from Adnams or an ice cold cider in the Kings Head or the George (I expect at least one free pint for that plug Mike). It is fantastic to find out what our children are up to at School and Playgroup from Kersey to Layham. Over 3,500 miles away the supermarket debate rages on (with extreme care remembering that we are all carrying loaded weapons!). I am also confident that Howard Gibbons would be ecstatic to discover that his latest exploits with his mother and friend always entertain in Helmand. Particularly the last paragraph where he cuts from light hearted pleasantry to the administration of a death in the family! There are many other items within the Community News that we enjoy. We are very grateful that from now on Kelvin, Matt and the HCN Team have kindly offered to send a box of copies out to us every month. However nothing can replace the real thing and we all look forward to seeing our families and friends in Hadleigh soon.

Whatfield Players All the cast and stage team, send a sincere thankyou to all our audience who supported us in the one night murder mystery – “Who Killed the Caretaker” on Thursday 29th March. With all our bills paid – the profit on the evening was £425.30, and as stated funds of £200 each have been forwarded to F.I.N.D (families in need), and The Salvation Army. A further £25 has been donated to Whatfield’s Diamond Jubilee Fund – leaving 30p to swell our bank account! Well just think of the interest! Thankyou to all the businesses in the town who displayed our posters. Once again we’re indebted to “The Idler” for ticket sales. Finally to the wonderful supporters in our village, who helped us through rehearsals, and the performance day; we hope you are as pleased with results of our fun quiz, and draw evening.

Organisers of the Hadleigh Show are hoping that some new traffic planning will help ease congestion in the High Street on Show Day. Following discussions with the local authorities, several changes have been made for the 2012 show. The map indicates the main routing for vehicles into and out of the Show Ground car-parks.

Some of the key points to note are: • All vehicles from the Ipswich direction will be directed via Gallows Hill, which should minimise congestion in Angel Street.

• Both Car Parks will take Priority Parking, Disabled and Public Cars until full.

• Cars coming from Stone Street (Lavenham, Bildeston, Monks Eleigh) and Sudbury will come into the Showground via Coram Street and along the Gravel Pit Lane. These cars will EXIT via Lower Layham. Trade, Livestock & Horse vehicles from these directions will go via the High Street as usual.

• Trade, Livestock and Horse vehicles are asked to note that Benton Street now has a 7.5 tonne weigh restriction on it, and heavier vehicles will need to come in via an alternative route.

Traffic for A12 (East Bergholt/Colchester direction) will be able to exit via the High Street & Benton Street.

Hadleigh Farmers’ Agricultural Association anticipate a busy Show day, and whilst hoping to minimise local disruption, apologise in advance for anyone inconvenienced by the extra traffic.

Hadleigh & District Probus Club The object of the Club is "To promote fellowship amongst retired and semi-retired professional and business men". The Club was established in 1998 and has had another successful year.

The Club meets for lunch on the third Wednesday of the month at the Eight Bells, Hadleigh. Attendance has been good, averaging over 80% of the membership. Their ladies joined members for the Ladies Lunch last August held at The Donkey, Stone Street, Hadleigh. We were blessed with a glorious summer’s day in an otherwise nondescript month for weather. This year we have had our customary Annual Dinner at the end of March with a turnout of 50 members and guests. The Club occasionally invites guest speakers to give a short talk after lunch. During the year we had three guest speakers including, in October, Councillor Penny Cook, the Mayor of Hadleigh.

We had one outing during the year, to Horning Broad & Sheringham (with a steam railway trip from Sheringham to Holt) at the end of August. Again we were favoured with decent weather to make it a very pleasant day out.

The number of members in the Club is limited, mostly by the accommodation available for lunch. There have been a few changes in membership this year: we have lost three, including Peter Lee a founder member and Past Chairman. Their places have been taken by three new members who have joined us to share in the excellent food and wine provided by Linda and Gianni at the Eight Bells!

Presently we are a little below our maximum membership of 40. Any person interested in joining should, in the first instance, contact the Secretary, Chris Drake, on 01473 822098.

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is asking their supporters to hold cake days and coffee mornings to raise money and celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Now that local councils have waived the fee for road closures during the Jubilee period there is no better time to take advantage and get together to celebrate. The best thing is that it’s a great opportunity to raise funds and awareness for your local children’s hospice.

The EACH fundraising team have put together a pack including hints and tips to make the most of your event with recipe and games ideas as well as ways to add a fundraising element to the day. A New Service from the River Stour Trust This season The River Stour Trust is providing a new service on Saturdays offering one-way boat trips between both Flatford and Dedham on our electric launch ‘Trusty II’. This is in response to a popular request from people who have walked to Flatford from Dedham and would like to return by boat. This service is in addition to our regular boat trips from Flatford to Fen Bridge and back which we have provided on Sundays, Bank Holidays and Wednesdays in the school summer holidays for many years. We are aware of the aims of the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Stour Valley Project to encourage people to visit this beautiful and unique area whilst sustaining an environment unspoilt for future use by generations to come. We hope that our service will enable people to leave their cars at one venue and experience the tranquillity and the wild-life of the river from a different perspective. ‘Trusty II’ is virtually silent and does not pollute the river or cause a bow-wave which would damage the river bank.

Our half-hour trips start from Dedham Boathouse Restaurant at 10.15 a.m. and run on a regular timetable throughout the day. The last trip leaves Flatford at 5.00 p.m. The boat holds up to eight passengers and each trip costs £5 for adults, £3 for children and £1 for dogs. We will take less physically able passengers back to their original starting point, but we do not offer a discount on return tickets. The service is also dependent on the weather and river conditions being favourable. This year, from July to September there is also the option of returning by the ‘hopper bus’, which has been in service for the past two years.

The River Stour Trust is a registered charity and its aims are to restore and maintain the navigation of the River Stour. All our operators are volunteers and money raised by our boat trips goes to support our aims.

In May, the Villages Edition will be delivered for the first time to Lavenham and I welcome all our new readers with gusto. I took the opportunity on your behalf to make an official visit to Lavenham. Naturally, I have to travel with a small entourage; my remembrancer, photographer and such like. The picture shows me amongst some of their wares. The cushions, tapestry wall hangings and such like are beautiful and make wonderful and unusual presents. My Editor popped through a note with an advance copy of the column from Captain Marc Condon which you will find in these pages. I was quite titillated to find that not only is my column circulating in Helmand but I received a special mention in despatches. I am sure that you will all join with the Gibbons’ household in wishing Captain Condon and his colleagues very best wishes and God speed for a safe home-coming soon.

A life long friend is this year President of The Organ Club and he kindly invited me to join a day’s tour of organs in Bury St Edmunds. I had such an interesting time visiting St John the Evangelist, Garland Street Baptist Church, St Mary’s and the Cathedral. The Cathedral required one to have pencil-like proportions to ascend a tiny spiral staircase to the organ loft.

And thus through all the changing scenes of life, my mind turns to the subject of leases. If you are considering taking a lease of a shop or similar do be careful as to the onerous nature of the obligations in most leases. Quite often tenants will be required to place the building in good order (structure and all) whether during or at the end of the tenancy. That can be quite an undertaking with a very old building in Hadleigh or Lavenham or a similar old village. Should you wish to dispose of that lease then you could also be required to underwrite the obligations of the incoming tenant. There are thus many pitfalls that should cause you to beat a path to my door.

Weavers Meadow, Hadleigh Face to Face with Persimmon Site Manager, Craig Salmon How long have you worked in the construction industry? I started in 1994 as a labourer, and worked my way through the ranks to Site Manager in 2005. During this time I attended college and I am now an Associate Member of Chartered Institute of Building.

How many homes are you building at Weavers Meadow? There will be 170 properties on the development, including 59 homes for the community. Persimmon are building a wide selection of properties from 2 bedroom starter homes to executive 5 detached homes with double garages.

Are you having showhomes? Yes, two. The Gatcombe is a 4 bedroom home and the Kenton is a 5 bedroom home. Both are due to open in the summer – July/August time.

When will the construction of the development be finished? We anticipate construction to be complete in April/May 2015.

Have building regulations changed from your last site? Yes, they have, the depth of insulation in the roof space is now 400mm – this was formerly 300mm. Also, the hot water will be boosted by solar panels – which are unobtrusively fitted as the roof tiles are laid.

Who do you work with? My assistant is Dave Pilgrim who previously worked at our Stour Croft development in Sudbury. Chris Collins drives our forklift on site and Ralph Wolton our labourer.

What are your duties? I manage the day to day running of the site including ordering the relevant materials, checking deliveries and supervising the various trades – generally there are around 30 people on site. I always pay particular heed to all aspects of health and safety throughout the day.

What do you enjoy about your job? I like all aspects of my job especially building an efficient and supportive team on site which results in a good product to hand over to our customers.

Hadleigh Community Transport We need you!

Hadleigh Community Transport Group Ltd. was set up in 2000 to provide local bus services in and around Hadleigh using our own minibus and vehicles supplied by Suffolk County Council. Passengers are always welcome, as are volunteer drivers and people prepared to give a little of their time and expertise to the management committee. We operate five vehicles from our base in Hadleigh: four minibuses and a car, all of which can accommodate wheel chair users. Using our own minibus we operate service 796 to Mannningtree early morning and evening on weekdays and this is well used.

Our Suffolk Links Brett and Cosford demand responsive transport services operate six days a week to connect passengers from the nearby villages with bus services for onward travel and within the area. In and around Hadleigh the Dial-a-Ride service runs using volunteer drivers.

These services are available to all who want to use them. The Community Car service (‘Wheels within Wheels’) provides a point-to-point service both in and around Hadleigh and further afield for those who cannot use buses. We are always pleased to hear from anyone who would like to offer his or her services as a volunteer driver. Full training in operating an accessible minibus will be given leading to the award of the nationally recognised MiDAS Certificate.

For the management committee your involvement would be a meeting (of perhaps two hours) every six to eight weeks.

Children in Key Stage Two enjoyed a superb day out at Gressenhall Workhouse & Farm just before the Easter holidays. We made good use of our Victorian costumes from Market Week, going dressed in character to enhance the authentic experience of being a Victorian child going about their daily life in the Workhouse. Activities were lead by some very interesting characters and included a tour of the Workhouse rooms, a typical lesson complete with cane, slates and dunce hat, picking stones from the farmer’s field ready for sowing and some rather noisy and energetic bird scaring! We rounded off the day with an old-style laundry lesson where the children pumped their own water and used a mangle, then took a look around a Victorian kitchen and sampled some drop scones cooked on the range. It really was a fantastic way to end this term’s Victorians topic and a lot of fun was had by all.

Key Stage One also enjoyed a day out before the holidays to complete their topic of Farms and Working Animals. They spent a lovely day at Baylham Rare Breeds Farm looking at the animals and talking to the farmer about his work and the different kinds of animals at the farm. The new-born lambs were firm favourites of course, as were the Highland cattle and alpacas.

This term we are looking forward to joining in the Jubilee celebrations with a Jubilee Party and planting a commemorative tree. We will also be working on our Olympic Topic with lots of special activities and events, including making torches for a ‘round the world’ torch relay and our very own ‘Olympic’ Sports Day!

The obesity crisis is never out of the news for long. It’s costing the NHS millions of pounds every year because of the many health issues it can cause or exacerbate.

Natural Building – the Traditional Approach or How the Three Little Pigs beat the big bad wolf If the first of the Three Little Pigs had attended the seminar on Natural Building organised by Orchard Barn during March, his straw house would probably have fared a lot better than it did.

In fact he would have learned that a little sand, clay and water added to that straw could have created a traditional cob house safe from the hungriest of wolves!

Forty or so participants, all with an interest in natural, traditional building techniques, gathered at Ringshall Village Hall to enjoy fascinating presentations and a variety of hands-on demonstrations. First up, a talk

by Alexandra Merriman on the building of a roundhouse woodland cabin and a cob wood-fired hot tub showed us that enthusiasm and a willingness to learn is all it really takes to have a go at building with the natural materials around us. After lunch, traditional oak carpenter Rick Lewis introduced participants to his work creating beautiful, sustainable timber framed buildings using traditional techniques and tools.

Outside in the sunshine the demonstrations allowed everyone to get their hands (and wellies) dirty creating traditional cob mix and render. William Clement-Smith showed us how the wattle and daub walls of some of Suffolk's oldest houses are repaired using coppiced hazel rods and other local natural materials, and we thoroughly enjoyed a demonstration of an oak log being hand converted into building timber.

Back at Orchard Barn, Spring heralds the arrival of not just blossom and buzzing bees but also some exciting opportunities for volunteers to get involved, learn new skills and enjoy some fresh air. Natural flooring needs to be laid in the barn, incorporating both chalk and earth floors, and existing cob walls rendered. In June, we will be setting up a rainwater harvesting system for the centre; so anyone interested in learning more about this, or the other projects, are warmly invited to contact Sarah Partridge on 01473 658193 or visit www.orchardbarn.org.uk for more information.

Every week in the uk at least 12 young people die suddenly of undiagnosed heart conditions. In 1995 CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) was funded to raise awareness of conditions that can lead to Young Cardiac Sudden Death. When our 25 year old daughter suddenly collapsed and died 18 months ago CRY supported and helped us.

The issue of cardiac health in Britians young people was highlighted when a 23 year old footballer collapsed during a televised FA Cup match. There is evidence to show that Screening can save lives and help stop 600 fit and healthy young people dying each year. We want to help raise funding to have youngsters in Hadleigh from the age of 14 to 35 screened.

We need to raise £8,500 which will fund a CRY ECG Testing for 100 young people, it would be wonderful to think that we would be helping to save lives and to prevent families going through the dreadful trauma that we have been through. This week pupils, parents and staff have had the opportunity to learn together. We live in a rapidly changing world and our children need to have the ability to learn effectively as well as show the skills of resilience, adaptability and flexibility to succeed in the future. All of us need to learn new skills throughout our lives. With the constant changes in technology we have the ability to learn in a variety of ways.

Staff and pupil training Our focus, at Hadleigh, is what goes on in the classroom. Not all pupils learn in the same way. Therefore, staff need to look at how we teach as well as what we teach to ensure we provide children with approaches which allow all to learn effectively. One of the ways in which we seek to improve our work is by staff undertaking research into the best ways to support children’s learning. We work closely with pupils to trial new approaches and receive their feedback. We then use all our findings to develop whole staff training. This week, for the first time, a number of our pupils contributed to whole staff training – supporting the learning of the staff.

We have had 2 training evenings this week. Our first session on Monday evening focussed on the feedback strategies which are most valued by pupils. We will be using the findings to develop a new assessment policy and further improve practice. On Thursday evening some of our pupils took sessions for the staff focussing on pupil leadership and how this develops children’s confidence and allows them to take more ownership of their learning. Employers are looking for young people who have the skills required to be effective employees. They need to be able to take on responsibility, have the confidence and self belief to use their initiative and solve problems creatively as well as work effectively with a wide range of people. Our pupils did an excellent job in our staff training session. We will be developing more opportunities for pupils to further develop their independence, confidence and learning.

E-safety Project – Parent Workshop Evening Following our staff training on Thursday Mrs. Thomas ran an E-safety workshop for parents. Changes in technology bring huge benefits and access to a much wider range of information and contacts. However, it is important that technology is used safely and that our young people learn to be discerning with regard to the quality of the information they access as well as the sites they use. Those of us over the age of 25 may not have had experience of some of the technologies which our young people use on a daily basis. The aim of this workshop was to support parents’ learning with respect to how they can support their child to use the internet responsibly and safely.

Suffolk Athletic Trials 11 students have been picked to represent Hadleigh High School in the Suffolk Athletics Trials. The event is being held in Bury St Edmunds on the 10th May 2012. The students that have been selected have performed at a high level in their chosen athletics event; the events include 1500m, 800m, 100m, 200m and shot putt. The students who will be taking part are: Alex Baxter, Ollie Peters, Jackson Crisp, Seth Filbedge, Amy Pettit, Tom Cowley, Miriam Jacobs, Jasmine Hayward, George Johnson, Chris Rose and Ruby Shepperson We would like to wish all the students taking part the best of luck and will be keeping everyone updated on their results. Those students finishing in 1st and 2nd place and achieving the necessary qualifying performances will be selected to represent Suffolk in the Eastern Counties and All England Championships. All those taking part are excited and feel that it will be a brilliant experience.

Music Week is a great success During the week commencing March 26th, the school took part in a Music Week which was organised by the Music Department. This week included fun activities in form times, including “Name That Singer” and figuring out what songs are that have been played backwards.

There was also a “Battle of the Bands” competition which was a huge success with several bands including Connected, a Year 7 group, Daniel & Jonah, Hadleigh High Jazz Band and a teacher formed band. The overall winners were Nuclear Winter, and we would like to say a very well done to all those who took part.

Guests Bands During Music Week on Tuesday 27th March, Hadleigh High school was privileged to get a live performance from two fantastic bands that had come to perform during lunch time. One of these bands was full of amazing talent which had spawned by our very school. The band consists of three talented musicians, Nic Keeble (vocals and guitar), Westie (bass) and Harry Challis (drums). Their music was original and very inspiring to the children of Hadleigh High school; our school was very privileged to have them come and play for us. One student said: “It was a really enjoyable experience and has introduced me to new music genres.” Overall the experience was very eye opening and enjoyable for all. The other live band was Free for All in Montreal.

Members, Elliot McCall, Oscar Charlton, Nic Keeble, Michael Whittle and Joe Mamo, came all the way from Suffolk One to give a live performance to students at lunch time.

They filled the drama hall with original songs and covers, keeping the students engaged. All of the students agreed it was an enjoyable music experience and it really gave them an insight into the power of live music. One student commented, ‘I thought their music was very inspiring and will encourage me to explore music further’. This proved to be a successful performance, with praise from everyone.

Invitation to Hadleigh High School Community Fete – 12th May 2012 Please note that Year 10 pupils are organising a charity Fundraising Fete for the local community on Saturday 12th May 2012 at the school. Many of our pupils across year groups are creating their own stalls and we have had an excellent response from local businesses and community groups. The fete will run 11am and 3pm. Caroline Gibson, Headteacher New Prefects announced Hadleigh High is delighted to announce that new prefects have been selected for when the current Year 11 prefects leave for their exams in May. Year 10 pupils were selected after being interviewed for their chosen subject and were taken to a training day down at the Hadleigh Guildhall to take part in a range of informative and fun activities, which helped them develop the skills that are needed to take on the role of a perfect. We would like to congratulate all successful applicants and the very best of luck with your new responsibility.

Library launches Reading Week Year 7 will be celebrating Reading Week this month.

Reading Week is run by the Library and the English Department to promote literacy and reading for pleasure. This promises to be an exciting week, as there will be lots of activities taking place, including quizzes, competitions and a ‘Where’s Wally?’ hunt.

Glenn Dakin, author and illustrator or the Graphic Novel ‘Candle Man’ will be coming in to discuss the inspiration behind his books. There will also be a book-themed nonuniform day for Year 7 to finish off the week.

Summer Concert On the 10th May, Hadleigh High school will be presenting the summer concert. As the date draws closer, preparations are underway to make sure the event runs smoothly. There is still time to audition; students just need to speak to Miss Macey if they wish to get involved. Tickets and additional information will be announced closer to the time, but make sure you attend for an evening of live music and various talents!

Fundraising for the Fete In preparation for our Year 10 fete, we have been, and are currently, organising fundraising activities; the proceeds will go towards the organizing of the fete. Some of these activities include a non-school uniform day, cake sales, a tug of war competition and a chance to beat your friends in a thrilling game of Guitar Hero!

The Hadleigh High School fete will be held on Saturday 12th May. Half of all the money raised will go towards Cancer Research UK and the other half of the money will go towards developments and improvements within the school.

Shakespeare Schools’ Festival 2012 On Wednesday 18th of April, it was the first session of the workshop in preparation for Othello. This year the teachers have decided to work on the play before casting the roles. This will give the students participating a better understanding of the play before they focus on their own roles, although the teachers have a good idea who has been allocated each part.

School Production shrouded in mystery This year’s production still remains a mystery to the students, although a notice board has been put up to inform the students about the latest news. So far, it has only been revealed to us that this year’s production will not be Mamma Mia! Boys’ Football Big congratulations to the Year 7 boys’ football team who have reached the final of the Ipswich School Cup. We wish them luck in their final against Farlingaye School.

Dear Sir Thank you Mr Parker (April Edition letters) for elevating my status to posh, my street cred is well up. I was born into a working class family in Gt Waldingfield, we moved to Sudbury when father had his own business with a partner, I left school and joined Bruntons propellers as an apprentice, then onto a mechanic and then into the police force for 30 years (Dad was chuffed). Moved to Hadleigh 25 years ago and now own my own house and am happily retired and guess what I really like Earl Grey tea and drink it all the time, so if that is posh so be it I am POSH. Now I was anti Tesco and still am, that is different to being anti supermarket. Morrisons are not generally perceived as being bully boys and have come in quietly to right place at the right time and it will upgrade the QD building and I think it is brilliant, one in the eye for the Tescoites, as for the Waitrose store I believe that this is just rumour at this time. We shall see. Anything but Tesco for me. Do you think I should be looking at green wellies and tweed clothing now?

Dear Sir BDC says that it looked at all options before abandoning the council tax freeze. All Councils faced similarly tough decisions yet Babergh is one of the very few Councils in the country to abandon the freeze and cynically pitched the increase to the maximum allowed before triggering a local referendum. One of Babergh’s arguments for abandoning the freeze is because they say that all Councils will abandon it next year and by doing so this year the increase will be less dramatic. I understood this argument is not correct as the system is due to change next year and asked for clarification from the Secretary of State, Eric Pickles, Minister for Communities. This is the reply from his office: “Dear Mrs Quinlan - your understanding is correct - a new rates retention system is being developed from 2013 - 2014 onwards and this will require a new baseline to be developed for all local authorities; the Government has still to determine how it will set that baseline. Councils cannot therefore assume they are necessarily increasing their spending power for future years by increasing council tax this year.

Ministers share your disappointment with the decision of Babergh District Council to increase their council tax. The Government has made available a grant to all authorities which freeze or reduce their council tax in 201213. The grant is equivalent to a 2.5% increase in the council tax - this would allow councils to receive additional funding without increasing their council tax. The council tax freeze scheme is voluntary, so it is up to authorities to decide whether or not they wish to accept this funding. All eligible authorities accepted the grant and froze their council tax in 201112 but a small number, including Babergh District Council, have said they will not do so in 2012-13. Ministers believe that these authorities are making a mistake by taking money out of the pockets of their council taxpayers rather than accepting government funding to freeze the council tax in 2012-13. However, that is the choice they have made - and it is for them to account to their electorate for their decision.

Dear Sir With the Morrison’s supermarket announcement, it seems that whichever side of the fence you sit on, this is potentially the best outcome on the long protracted supermarket saga in Hadleigh. The majority of people in polls seemed to want a supermarket in Hadleigh; however, the majority of people in polls seemed to also think the Brett Works site was not a suitable location. Therefore, whilst there are other issues to be considered in a large supermarket coming to Hadleigh, if nothing else, a measure of democracy I guess seems to have occurred.

I read Mr Parker’s letter in last month’s HCN where he was questioning the lack of protest about the Morrison’s. I think this completely mis-reads the reasoning for the protests against the Tesco. It was the location on 16

the Brett Works site that was the main bone of contention for reasons such as traffic, noise, safety, the impact on the conservation area etc. If you look at the Hands off Hadleigh site, you will see that the majority of the reasons are site specific. Therefore, much of the reasoning for protesting against a Tesco on the Brett works site is simply not relevant to the Buyright site regardless of what supermarket had taken up Buyrite on their proposal. Whatever, side of the debate you sit on the reality of the situation is that there is probably little about the Morrison’s proposal that could be constructively protested against.

So, like it or not, we will have 2 supermarkets in Hadleigh and we really don’t need anymore, so surely we should now be looking to find a suitable use for the neglected Brett Works site so that it no longer sits idle. In finding a use we need to learn the lessons that Tesco so sorely missed which is to find a use that is fitting to the constraints of the site (for example, access) and would benefit the community. In other area’s community land trusts have been set up to address issues like affordable housing, something that with affordable housing being in short supply in an expensive area would surely be of some benefit. In addition community land trusts often look at addressing other issues the community may be facing such as having venues for start up businesses or community/charitable organisations at low cost, community facilities like libraries, shops, facilities for the elderly and environmental projects to name but a few – I am sure most people can think of something that the residents of Hadleigh need, this could be a way to do this at a time of austerity. Let’s do something that will benefit our lovely town and the people who live here and not just line the pockets of a multi-national corporation.

Dear Sir I would like to express my thanks to “Jayrest” on the Lady Lane Industrial Estate, Hadleigh, for my superb sofa.

Recently health problems have led me to purchase a new sofa. I realised I needed one not only to sit on, but also to crash out on during bad ‘chemo days’ when climbing stairs is a major event. I trudged around several furniture outlets before finding just what I loved and needed, almost on my doorstep. Jayrest have helpful and experienced sales staff, (not horribly intrusive like some outlets). When my problems were explained, manufacture and delivery dates were sympathetically speeded up. Dear Sir Just so that your readers know that the letter from Mr. Parker did not come from me, I would like to take issue with him on his comments. Firstly the Morrisons announcement was not made until 21 February, so too late for any “outcry” to appear in the Newsletter (unless it appeared alongside his letter). Secondly Mr. Parker should have been paying better attention before casting aspersions, as he obviously did not read press releases. It has been some 15 years now that a substantial majority of residents have regularly declared opposition, not to supermarkets as such, but to the development of the Riverside (Brett Works) site for a supermarket of any hue. This is not an appropriate location for a supermarket, especially of the size proposed, as the development would lead to the despoiling of a conservation area including allotments, and lead to untold traffic congestion. As Morrisons are to use part of the Buyright site, there was no necessity for “petitions, rallies, etc” by anyone including the “Earl Grey drinkers of Hadleigh”.

I take exception when Mr. Parker, or anyone, feel that they can casually categorise those who do not share their views as somehow an elite or privileged group – nothing is further from the truth as opposition comes from all sections of the community. This view is then aggravated when such persons invoke what seems to be the ultimate sanction of pointing to the exit door, which is offensive. I am sure that Mr. Parker may well be pleased to achieve the competition he so desires, but will this come with the right colour plastic bags?

Two edible plants There are several edible plants along footpaths which were harvested as food in the past but have now fallen from favour. Why, is something that I cannot answer, but probably because they are “fiddly” to harvest or that better alternatives are easily available in supermarkets.

What are these edible plants?

Ramsoms (allium ursinum) - also known as wild-garlic.

They’re a member of the onion family (complete with that familiar “onion” smell) which occurs all over Europe. Unusually for the onion family they have very broad leaves, triangular stems and are perennials. If you walk along the Hadleigh railway walk during the spring you can smell them when you cross the embankment over the brook. Look down the side of the bank into the wetwoodland area and you will see a pure white carpet of flowers – they’re the Ramsoms!

All parts of the plant are edible, leaves, stems, bulbs, flowers – the lot (although eating flowers doesn’t somehow seem right). You must however clearly identify what you are harvesting because the foliage looks very similar to Lilley of the Valley which is poisonous! In the past they have been cut, dried and used as cattle feed, but their pungent “oniony” smell made the milk taste. This was not a problem in parts of Europe however where the milk was used to produce cheese to which it gave a very distinct flavour which is nowadays considered as being one of the “characteristics” of product. The plant contains small quantities of a material called Allicin which has the effect of reducing blood pressure and cholesterol. It is also a mild disinfectant which has been used in the past to treat colic and thread-worms Alexanders (Smymium olusatrum) also known as “Horse Parsley This is an imported plant that has now “naturalised” here It originated in the Mediterranean area and was brought to our shores by the Romans who cultivated it as a source of early green vegetable. The whole plant is edible; leaves were used to flavour stews and soups, stems and roots were cooked (generally boiled) and eaten as vegetables –apparently the stems taste similar to celery and the root to parsnip.

Even the seeds are edible and were ground to season food.

The plant starts growing in late autumn and by mid January will have sufficient foliage to be harvested. If undisturbed it can grow to a height of around five feet (1.5 metres) before flowering in late spring. The flower heads are large “umbrels” (umbrella shaped) and bear large numbers of small yellow flowers (Photo 2). Once pollinated by insects these then produce very heavy, black seeds. Because of the weight of the seeds, the unaided spread of the plant from an original site is very slow, and some Historians claim that the presence of the plant is the sign of either early Roman Settlements or Monasteries in the area. There doesn’t seem to be any satisfactory explanation however about why it frequently occurs in large swathes in coastal areas.

In the past concoctions have been made from the plant to deal with illnesses as diverse as “urination” and “ridding the body of gas”. If these medicinal claims are true, quite what affect it had on the Roman Legionnaires who routinely consumed it as part of their diet is something on which we can only speculate!

Eastern Family Services Coffee Morning

- Supporting Foster Care Fortnight Campaign For two weeks every May, Foster Care Fortnight, the UK’s biggest fostering campaign co-ordinated by Fostering Network, puts fostering centre stage throughout the UK. The campaign’s aim is to raise awareness of the urgent need for more people to come forward and become foster carers. As more and more children are coming into care, figures published by Fostering Network have shown that 8,750 new foster families are needed in 2012 alone.

East Bergholt based Eastern Family Services (EFS) is a local fostering agency looking to recruit foster carers who can provide children in care with a safe and nurturing home while they can’t live with their own families, for anything from a few days to many years.

School Girls Charity Walk

Three local school girls gave up their Easter Sunday to help give a better life to animals in need. Nine year old Annabel Harris and mum Kay, together with Louise and Lucy Watling and their mother, Jo, completed a sponsored walk along the old railway line and raised ÂŁ300 for Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare. The weather was fine for the six mile Sudbury to Long Melford (and back) trek which has raised ÂŁ300 so far. The girls came up with the idea by themselves after two SESAW volunteers visited their school to talk about the Sanctuary.

Do it 4 Steven Steven Henly grew up in Hadleigh, went to Hadleigh High and worked at the Leisure Centre whilst at college and during holidays from University.

He loved sport and any sort of physical activity so some of you may remember him at Karate, Football, Basketball and more. Unfortunately Steven contracted Cancer whilst at University and after a valiant effort he succumbed to it. Steven’s family wanted to do something positive to keep Steven’s memory alive and decided to raise money each year to sponsor an annual prize at his University.

A number of events are held to help raise money in Steven’s memory, this year there is to be another “Steven’s walkâ€? on Tuesday 8 May, it will start at the Leisure Centre at 11am (meet in reception) and will go along the Railway Walk to the end and return back to the Leisure Centre, from point to point is 5 Miles. Boxford Gardens Open 2012 will take place on Sunday 3rd June, 11am to 5pm. Come and enjoy a great day out for all the family in the beautiful villages of Boxford and neighbouring Edwardstone. Quilting for charity

Some of the Hadleigh Country Threads Craft Group with the finished quilt.

Making over 500 accurate, Japanese folded patches was a relatively straightforward exercise. Combining them to create a colourful doublebed sized quilt was a bigger challenge but the ladies of the Country Threads Craft Group were determined to succeed. Once chief quilters, Mavis Gordon and Lin Slaughter, were satisfied that pattern and colours were balanced and pleasing to the eye then the marathon task of sewing the squares together began. With 15 experienced, enthusiastic needle women on the case it was not surprising that the beautiful bed spread was completed long before their deadline, the end of March 2012. The finished masterpiece will be presented to the fund raising team at St Elizabeth Hospice for use at one of their future events. If you would like to be the proud owner of this unique quilt and help an invaluable charity at the same time why not be in with a chance and buy some draw tickets?

The Porch Project Open Night The Porch Project has grown from strength to strength since its opening in 2009. We have now over 350 young people on our books and we are still growing. We have a great relationship with the police and local authorities and we continue to work together with as many organisations as we can to develop the needs of young people in the Hadleigh area. We have recently won a number of awards which included the Babergh District Council Special award, The Young Suffolk Roddy Macleod award and a High Sheriff award.

We are now recognised as being one of the biggest youth work projects in the East of England and have a great volunteer team. We now have some exciting news we have just secured funding for an education suite in the top of the deanery tower which will be kitted out with educational equipment to help young people who struggle with learning or after schools clubs, sex education and many other avenues of education will then be looked at.

We also are working at getting young people into employment and have already had a number of young people move into employment locally and are doing really well. Also in September the project will be launching a new Sign in out device which will mean that young people will have to pay £3 pounds for the year were they will be given an identity key fob to sign in and out of the Porch, however if they lose their keyfob they will have to pay £5 to replace it. This will be on show at the open evening were parents can come and see for themselves. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Jerryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Diary Fine warm and dry weather in March saw good numbers of Butterflies coming out early. Brimstone, Peacock, Common Orangetips and _ _ _ _ Tortoiseshells were all seen in the 1st week of March. First spring migrant Chiffchaffs were heard singing from the 14th March, Blackcap 26th March, Swallows were reported to have been seem as early as the 12th and 15th March. My first was on 3rd April over the garden. Red Kites took advantage of the fine March weather. Several were seen over the area, Matt Garnham saw Red Kites over Elmsett from 24th March.

There were 7+ Little Ringed Plovers at Shelley on 27th March. This wader is a summer visitor and much more uncommon than the Ringed Plover which can be seen all year. First Willow Warbler was heard singing on 6th April near Bullocky Fen. Two Egyptian Geese have been in the fields near Raydon Mill. These have come up river from Giffords Park. Again Peregrine Falcons have been in the Withermarsh area, and several other parishes.

Nightingales were singing at Broom Hill and Layham pits on 12th April, the same date as last year. Very early reports of singing Nightingales often turnout to be Song Thrush or Blackcaps, the latter more so, because they sing from scrub etc and have a loud song, but are unlike the real thing. The purring song from the first Turtle Dove of the year was at Layham Pits on 13th April (5th May last year). Just one Cuckoo so far, which was calling on the 17th A Nightingale photographed by April along the river walk area. Single Gary Mowles at Broom Hill Sandmartin also on the 17th at Hill on April 15th Farm, Layham. The Great Grey Shrike, we think left on the 23rd March, but unconfirmed reports suggest that it was still showing in the first week of April. It was a male bird because it started singing during the last few days before it left the area.

It was a sure sign it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t going to be around much longer. It stayed for 14+ weeks in and around the Layham Pits road area. There were still people who never got to see the Shrike. Will it return next winter?

Hadleigh & District Garden Club What an evening of hilarity the April meeting proved to be. For various reasons no speaker had been engaged so we had arranged a short film showing the garden of Ann Munson the winning entry in the 2004 Ipswich Back Garden Competition, (which we will be visiting in the summer) followed by another question and answer session.

It proved to be difficult to get the meeting started due to the buying frenzy at our newly expended trading table!! In the past items were unwanted plants and garden bits and pieces and the entire profit went to the club but now it includes produce specifically made for the table and being sold on a 50/50 basis which allows cooks to recover their ingredient costs and of course generates more income for the club. The costs of some specialised seed is now so great it will be a great help and also to squirrels like yours truely who canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bear to see any fruit or vegetable go to waste and is compelled to turn it into jams, pickles and whatnot and for those who just enjoy cooking for itsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; own sake.

After the film the committee formed a panel to get things going and needless to say, the hose pipe ban and its implications were top of the list of subjects. Two of the committee had been pressed into contacting all the necessary agencies to find out the facts and what it added up to for the average gardener! Why werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t we surprised to find many â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;greyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; areas and anomalies - â&#x20AC;&#x153;you can fill ponds to save your fish but not tadpoles, newts etcâ&#x20AC;? - what about greater crested newts - arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t they protected by law? From these discussions we were in to how to take cuttings of fuschias, orchid growing and care, rhubarb forcing containers, dealing with vine weevils, asparagus and lily beetles and how to keep those glorious cyclamen alive for months, in flower and without flaggging its amazing the things gardeners find to talk (and laugh) about. One question - are we gardeners a placid, easy going lot and what about those flies?!

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not telling you the answers to that but ask you to come and find out at our friendly monthly meetings but I will tell you, Aprilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s meeting was more fun and laughter than Q.I. - eat you heart out Stephen Fry!!!

News from the Garden Personal Thoughts As I sit down to write this my first thought is exactly the same as last month namely "However am I going to catch up". Having had some lovely days last month when we sat out in the garden for lunch on several days the weather has gone back to Winter. At the moment the weather is highlighting the difference between a gardeners view of adequate rainfall, and that of the water authority. We have now had sufficient rain that all my water butts are full up, and the heavy clay soil in my vegetable patch is really too wet to walk on. To further aggravate the situation the local weather forecast shows some rain on every one of the next five days. Of course this quantity of rain which in the short run is excessive for me will make hardly any difference to reservoir levels, and does not mean that our gardens will have sufficient water in two or three months time, so the hosepipe ban continues.

What this Spring does demonstrate is just how useful greenhouses, and cold frames can be. both of mine are bulging with plants and cuttings that I have raised to plant out later. My dahlia tubers have been set up on trays to start into growth. They are all sprouting nicely, and in the next day or two I shall be taking cuttings from those that I want to increase. Similarly my achimenes tubers have been set up to sprout on small trays in a propagator, and these are sprouting nicely ready to pot up to give me a nice display in the greenhouse in late Summer. If you are not familiar with these and have the internet look at <www.dibleys.com>. They are easy to keep indoors overwinter if you do not heat your greenhouse.

This made the 3 month figure 94.9 mm (3.7"), which is far short of the average. However so far in April we seem to have had a lot of wet days, so it will be interesting to see the total at the end of the month. In March the maximum temperature was 19 Cel (66F) which is warm, indeed it is the highest March maximum since I started recording figures in 1999. The minimum was 1 Cel (34F), which is again the warmest March minimum temperature since 1999.

In my garden the ground temperature in mid April is 8 Cel (41F). This is a bit cooler than normal reflecting the way the weather seems to have gone back to Winter after a beautiful March.

Hints If you grow lilies it is time to go looking for the lily beetle. This beautiful red pest and its young eat lily and fritillaria leaves and can reduce lilies to bare stems quite quickly. They can be distinguished from ladybirds in that they do not have any spots. When approached they drop to the ground and hide, so the trick is to catch them as they fall. Following on from last month now is the time to sow courgettes, and french and runner beans, for eating this Summer. The keen vegetable gardeners will also be getting in the brussels sprouts, leeks, and sprouting brocolli to eat next Winter.

Finally let me finish with the standard May Hints. Do not forget to prune your early flowering shrubs like forsythia, and do not be in too much of a hurry to plant Summer bedding. This year it is also worth thinking about whether you will be able to cope with watering your Summer bedding without a hose pipe Some of the better ones are geraniums, oesteospermum, begonia semperflorens, and mesambrianthemum.

Every year the police throughout the UK hand out 30,000 Helmet Watch reward packs to children aged between 3-15years who they see wearing a cycle helmet. Each pack contains an on-the-spot prize, a bookmark and a prize draw card.

Lily receives her prize from The scheme is the brainchild of The PCSO Julia Bignall Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust, a registered charity that is committed to reducing the number of children who are killed and seriously injured in cycling accidents every year by promoting the use of cycle helmets and other safer cycling equipment.

Angela Lee, the Trust’s founder and chief executive, said “Too often children are criticised for doing the wrong thing. Helmet Watch rewards good behaviour and I would like to congratulate Lily on her prize. “ PCSO Julia Bignell, who presented Lily with her prize, supports the scheme. She said “Helmet Watch is a fantastic scheme. Wearing a cycle helmet is such a simple thing to do and one day it could save your life.

Child cyclists are particularly vulnerable so anything that encourages them to wear a helmet must be encouraged and supported. Its great to have a local winner and hopefully it will send out a message to all the children in the area that wearing a cycle helmet is the right thing to do.”

The Helmet Initiative Trust is a registered charity. It was funded in 1998 and is based in Reading.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Patricia Coughlan, known to all her friends as Pat, on 13th April 2012 in Ipswich hospital. She and her late husband, Peter Coughlan, first moved to Hadleigh in 1970 and were among the first residents of the then new Ann Beaumont Way development, living at number 45 until 1984 when, in retirement, they moved to Great Waldingfield. After Peter Coughlan's passing in 1996, Pat moved back into Hadleigh, a town she had always liked and felt at home in amongst her many friends. During her years in Hadleigh she had served as school secretary at St Mary's Church Primary School in Stonehouse Road, and worked in administration at Babergh District Council. Patricia's funeral service will be at 1.30pm in St Mary's Church, Kersey, Tuesday 8th May 2012, all who knew her are welcome. Pat will be deeply missed by her three sons and daughter, her five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, her close friends and all who knew her.

Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group The club’s redecoration project, led by Martin Grayling, is now complete and has given the Friars Road pavilion a fresh new look. The work has involved laying new flooring in the changing rooms, repainting every room, installing new lighting, blinds and taking delivery of new sofas. Three skips of clutter was cleared from the loft alone! It has been a great effort by Martin, electrician Peter Tampion and a loyal band of members who worked most weekends and evenings in the weeks leading up to the start of the season. On the field the club has had something of a makeover too, with new captains for three teams and a definite accent on youth throughout. Josh Davey has become 1st XI captain, and is full of confidence going into the season after bringing two new players to the club, fast bowler Kyle Tanner and spinner Paul Budd. Another new face is Ken Henry, this season’s overseas player who has arrived from New Zealand. It is very much a young side, with barely a 30-year old in sight, and is fully focused on achieving promotion to Division 1 of the Two Counties league after last year’s near miss. There were encouraging signs with the first-day friendly win over Ipswich. Bloss Tampion has taken over the 2nd XI captaincy from Dave Mann and is also hoping to develop some of the club’s best youngsters while keeping the team as competitive as possible. There will be great opportunities for players such as Gregor Paton, Brett Crisp, Dom Manthorpe and Sam Handley. Martin Grayling is the new Sunday XI skipper, and also has high hopes of promotion. Peter Tampion continues as captain of the Academy XI, which was one of the success stories of last season. It would be no surprise to see the likes of Max Planck, Ben Daniels, Tommy Newbigging and Alex Davey make considerable progress this year. It promises to be another packed season for our junior teams, and further development of the girls section which is only in its second year. The girls will play matches in three age groups, and will join forces with East Bergholt for the Under-15s. In fact it is good to see several local clubs linking up to provide and develop girls cricket.

The club has recently conferred Life Membership on two great servants of the club, Gary Girling and Derek Manning. Derek has provided accommodation for the club’s overseas players for many years, while our chairman Gary’s day-to-day dedication to the club remains as strong now as it was 40 years ago. After winning a Suffolk cricket Osca last year Gary has also recently deservedly received a Babergh Community Achievement Award. The club would like to offer its congratulations and appreciation to both.

Rachel Bodsworth was very happy with her finishing time of 4 hours and 15 minutes. Coach, Anne Wilkinson, raced through the finish-line in 5 hours 13 minutes and 40 seconds.

Stowmarket (Joe Cox) Half Marathon: Blustery conditions greeted 315 runners in Buxhall as they set on their way round the beautiful rural course on Sunday March 25. Hadleigh Hares gave a strong showing in the race with eight Hares taking part. Competing in his first half marathon, Matt Hunter, finished in 59th place with a time of 1 hour 32 minutes 38 seconds. As training for the Brighton Marathon, Rachel Bodsworth finished with a time of 1 hour 52 minutes and 6 seconds. Kate Thomas and Simon Fenn were within seconds of each other in their respective times of 1 hour 41 minutes 30 seconds and 1 hour 41 minutes 32 seconds. Mike Rosbrook, competing in the male veteran 65 category, completed the race with a time of 1 hour 52 minutes 55 seconds. Anna Shiress finished in 2 hours 1 minute 24 seconds, Helen Norman completed the course in 2 hours 4 minutes and 4 seconds, with Claire Bartram going through the line with 2 hour 8 seconds 22 seconds.

Mucky Races: Four Hares went on their travels to Bures on April 1, to take part in a 12k event at Mucky Races. The ladies team of Jackie Kirk, Helen Norman, Anna Shiress and Claire Bartram, had an excellent victory when they won the 12k event.

Fritton Lake Cross Country Half Marathon: On March 18, the inaugural Fritton Lake Cross Country Half Marathon was held.

Two Hares, Trudy Avis and Kate Thomas, competed in the 135 strong field. The off-road course was a single lap around the Somerleyton estate, taking runners through woodland and along country pathways as well as past the front of the Hall itself. The tough course and wet conditions meant that the race was very challenging. Both women had a strong run and finished 5th and 6th Lady and 55th and 56th overall in a time of 1 hour 47 minutes.

Sudbury Fun Run: John Scaife came 8th in the 5 mile race with a time of 28 minutes and 42 seconds. New Hadleigh Hare, Carlos Catalan finished in a time of 32 minutes.

Davey Membership’s Half Century A new style of golf membership named after a celebrated Suffolk professional has reached a half century landmark.

Three years ago Newton Green Golf Club launched its Davey membership to enable people to become members on a pay and play basis.

It was aimed at those who did not have the time or James Walter (left) and Jean Davey holding a wanted to commit picture of the late Arthur Davey, with Newton resources to Green club historian Alan Vince become a full member, but still offered them the chance of gaining a handicap and affiliation to the English Golf Union. Recently, retiring chartered accountant James Walter, who was a founding partner in the Hadleigh firm of Walter-Wright, signed up as the 50th Davey member. Making a special presentation to him on behalf of the golf club was Jean Davey, the daughter in law of the late Arthur Davey. Arthur served Newton for 60 years, which is believed to be a world record for a professional working at a single club - a feat which gained him honorary membership of the Professional Golfers’ Association.

James Walter said: “My wife is already a member at Newton, and I see the Davey scheme as an ideal way to feel my way into golf club membership.”

Paddy Lockwood, club chairman, commented: “Davey membership has created a lot of interest. It has brought new people on board, and quite a number have since moved on to full membership, which means it has been a very good recruitment tool. “It also allows full members looking to spend less time on the course to drop down to Davey category, and still be closely involved with the club.” The half century of Davey membership comes as the club is preparing to hold a membership recruitment day at 1 pm on Sunday, April 29, when a free nine holes of golf is on offer to any prospective joiners.
