Hadleigh boys do well in Great East Swim Many congratulations go to Hadleigh boys Roy Death his two sons Kern and Truan and to Tom Olive who successfully completed a gruelling two mile swim in the Great East Swim at Alton Water on June 11th in memory of a beautiful friend Alison Fracella (nee Kettlewell).

Cheered on by family and friends they all swam in record times, in fact Roy came 1st in his age group - some feat!! It was a really great day and we are so very proud of them all for swimming and for raising an incredible £700 for the Alison Fracella Research Trust.

Roy is a Trustee of this local charity, reg no 1109426, which was set up in 2005. All monies raised from the swim will go towards the research project into brain cancer that the Trust is currently funding at the Royal Marsden Hospital in collaboration with the Institute of Cancer Research.

The website www.afrt.org.uk offers extensive information and support for sufferers and their families. Our very grateful thanks go to Roy, Kern, Truan and Tom for such an amazing achievement and to everyone who sponsored their swim. Thank-you all so very much.

Peter Johnson and The Golden Skeleton “I suppose this is what the Art Cognoscenti call an Installation”, said the woman in the anorak.

The tall smiling lady with an air of authority said it was Conceptual Art. “It’s a Sculpture”, said the small lady in a voice that denied contradiction.

We were in Angel Street at the private view of ‘Sarcophagus: September 2008’ and we were looking at a clear perspex coffin in which reclined a golden skeleton, the head of which was resting in a lap top computer. In the right hand, frozen in the attitude of attempting a last purchase, the skeleton held a credit card. At its side; a cell phone and scattered on the coffin floor more credit cards, scores of them. Tellingly, at its feet; a copy of the Financial Times announcing the collapse of the global economy. The skeleton’s hollow eyes staring unbelievably at the damage that has been wrought.

Peter Johnson, who created the piece, and acknowledges the assistance of a net-work of friends, tells us the idea came to him over a year ago in a ‘sudden vision’. “Is it”, he asks, “an old man’s folly or something more significant? Frankly I do not care” he continued, “for I have enjoyed making it immensely and have cemented friendships in the process. To have completed it is the greatest satisfaction of all”. He sees this as a modern day satirical Hogarthian comment on the financial crisis. On this score it really works and now it’s up to Peter to give it a wider audience.

Somewhere amongst the speculators in the City of London, perhaps.

Local Estate Agent, Brigette Currin, took a leap of faith for charity in May. Elizabeth Valda Estates has chosen Out and About as its charity for 2011. As one of the events to support the charity director, Brigette Currin, decided to join a team of 4 to do a sponsored tandem skydive.

“We believe passionately that everyone has the right to a complete and successful life and the quest for self-improvement is one of the noblest callings in life. Out and About, which supports disabled children become fulfilled by being able to be fully included in their chosen local leisure activity, does just that. So being able to jump for these children’s benefit was a privilege. The jump took place at Beccles airfield and we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day with beautiful blue skies and sunshine.

Free falling from 13,000ft, with a bird’s eye view of the Suffolk coastline and across from Norwich to Sizewell, was just an incredible experience!”

The team raised over £600 pounds for the charity.

Ben 'The Bear' Woods A Charity Boxing Tournament for Help4Heroes took place at Liquid/Envy in Ipswich on the 20/05/2011 with approx 1000 people watching the event - 50 or so from Bildeston and Elmsett supporting Ben Woods. During the course of the night there were 16 fights featuring HMP Highpoint versus Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire Brigade.

There was £3500 raised for the charity by HMP Highpoint £500 of that raised by Officer Woods, and a grand total of £7500 raised by all of the services. Ben ‘The Bear’ Woods won his fight against the police on points over 3 rounds with each round lasting 1 minute 15 seconds long. HMP Highpoint won the competition overall 7 - 6 with 4 draws on the night.

The event was all arranged by Lee Brown Boxing Events.

Craft & Food Fair returns in October Its now July and time to start planning the next Hadleigh Craft & Food Fair which will be on the 30th October in the Town Hall complex. After our Easter craft fair we yet again ask the crafter's to return and also ask for some new traders to take part too. We are looking for crafter's of all types from card makers, jewellery, bath products, knit wear, wood turning and not forgetting traders for our food hall too from chocolate makers to jam makers home made cakes to sweets. Our stalls are a 6 ft table pitch and start at £20 including the table hire too.

The halls do get filled up quite quickly so early booking is advised as we have to plan out the building and it is 1st come 1st served. We use all the rooms in the Town Hall Complex which starts in the Grand hall up stairs which we have access via lift or stairs. Then make your way to the other end of all the grand hall and up the stairs which takes you to the old own hall. then though to the next stair case to the guild hall which we have as our Food hall. We also have the dining room open for refreshments for after you have spent out on all your Christmas gifts or treats for yourself.

Simon and Val Haines moved to Hadleigh from Colchester in December last year and we love our new life here. You may have seen us loading our camper van in Church with musical Street instruments and PA equipment.

This is because we are in a number of folk music groups - three to be precise. Crownstreet is a four-piece group which plays traditional and newly composed folk songs and instrumental music for concerts at festivals, in clubs, for parties and other private or public functions. Between the four of us, we play a total of thirteen acoustic instruments - which include: accordeon, bandoneon, flute, recorder, saxophone, whistle, dulcimer, desk bells, musical saw, guitar, cittern and xylophone and vocals. You can hear Crownstreet at: www.myspace.com/crownstreetband The Hosepipe Band - a four-piece band which plays for barn dances, ceilidhs, country dances - call them what you will - mainly in East Anglia, but also sometimes further afield. Our line-up is: melodeon, flute, recorder, hammered dulcimer, saxophone, bass guitar and mandola. We always take a caller with us to explain the dances. With this group we play all over the country and occasionally even play for enthusiasts in France. We are part of "Burybal", a group which puts on French dances at the Blackbourne Centre, Elmswell near Bury St Edmunds three times a year. We also put on French dance workshops where French and Breton dances are taught.

Our line-up is: hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, diatonic accordeon, guitar and vocals. You can hear Bof! at: www.myspace.com/bofanost.

We have made CD recordings with all three bands. We have also started regular folk music sessions at The Ram in Market Place, Hadleigh. At the moment it is once a month on a Sunday evening. We have been getting 10-15 musicians with their instruments and voices. Anyone who plays any kind of folk music is welcome to come along and sing or play at these evenings. From September, we will be starting a monthly Folk and Acoustic Music night. This will be held on the first Friday of the month at the Ansell Community Centre. RNLI Fundraising News House to House Collection During the last fortnight in June the Fundraising Committee held a house to house collection in Hadleigh and its environs: we were amazed to find that your most generous donations have raised the magnificent total of £1035.26, and want to thank you all so much. If you didn’t receive a call from us, it is probably because our Committee is quite small in number, and we were unable to reach every street in the area – just imagine what the total could have been! Danish Handcraft Guild Solvejg Mills, UK agent for the well-known Danish embroidery firm Haandarbejdets Fremme (known over here as Danish Handcraft Guild), only moved into Monks Eleigh with her husband just over a year ago, but is delighted to be living in this beautiful area of Suffolk. The wonderful landscape around Hadleigh with its gentle undulations and wide skies reminds her of the very prettiest parts of her native Denmark.

As Mill Pharmacy has been open for over 18 months I am sure most of you are aware of all the services we offer: extended opening hours, disabled parking, pharmacist on duty at all times, a pharmacy shop stocking a range of commonly requested medicines, a special order service to cater for our individual customer’s needs, free delivery of your medicines if required as well as medication dispensed in dosset boxes if necessary. However, there are THREE things I want to draw your particular attention to this month that you really need to know about us.

Firstly, all our pharmacists have undertaken a special training course and are able to sell anti-malarials to you which were previously only available on a private prescription . To access this service you DO NOT NEED to make an appointment. Just come along to the pharmacy and ask to speak to one of our pharmacists. In addition the pharmacists will also be able to give you advice on any vaccines you may need or the type of over the counter medicines you need to take with you on your travels. We also stock a range of sun protection products, insect repellents and emergency travel packs.

Secondly, we have several members of staff trained to help you give up smoking on the NHS. This means that if you do not normally pay for your prescriptions or you have a prepayment certificate we can provide you with nicotine replacement products and give you help and support to give up smoking and IT WILL COST YOU NOTHING. Even if you pay for your prescriptions you only need to pay one prescription charge for a month’s supply of say nicotine patches or gum. This relates to just a little bit more than the price one packet of cigarettes and how many of those do you buy a month. Just think what you could do with the money you save from not smoking.........

Thirdly, have you ever felt confused about the medicines you take? Do you wonder why you are on them or whether some of them are causing you problems but you don’t do anything about it as you do not want to waste your doctor’s time? Well, then you need to come and speak to our pharmacists who will be more than happy to go through your medicines with you and discuss any problems you may have with them. You DO NOT NEED to make an appointment to do this. Just come to the pharmacy and ask to speak to the pharmacist.

Even if none of the above is of interest to you why not come and tell us what you would like us to do. We are always looking for new ways to provide a better service.

Local Groups get welcome cash boosts Community groups and parishes across Babergh have been receiving much-needed cash boosts from a Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) grant programme. The Babergh East LSP has dished out more than £18,500 in funding to a variety of projects from its community grants fund. Bids were sought from projects from parish councils and community groups that promoted young people’s participation in positive activities, adult participation in sport and recreation, help for vulnerable people to achieve independent living and promoting inclusion. Preference was given to applicants where it was demonstrated there was a high degree of volunteer involvement and where other funding was also in place.

The Babergh East LSP has dished out nearly £60,000 in funding to a variety of community projects since 2007. Diamond-Lites Majorettes The children have been training hard all winter ready for the start of the season.

They had their first performance of the year at the Nedging with Naughton Fete, where the new section Diamond-Sparx performed for the first time. It was also the first performance for some of our older girls, all did really well.

The committee and majorettes would like to say thank you to The Cock Inn, The George, The Ram, The Layham Queen, The Kersey Bell, The White Hart and all their customers who supported our Easter Egg Raffle in April. We also held our Annual Competition at Elmsett Village Hall in May. We would like to say a huge thank you to all the Diamond-Lites girls, boys, mums and dads who came along on the day to help, we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you also to Keith Avis, Andrews Butchers, The Hair Lounge, Adnams and Partridges who kindly donated prizes for our raffle.

At the beginning of June the troupe held a solo and duo competition for all the children and adults to enter, in preparation for the solo and duo competitions they will be entering throughout the season. All the children did really well.

We also had some amazing performances from the adults and a surprise performance from Jessie and Mr Potato head! Well done guys it was a great day.

Lastly, but most amazingly, WELL DONE to all the girls who entered their first competition at Brantham and WOW what results, the best the troupe has ever done! Competing against eight really good troupes the girls managed to win Four 1st place trophies, four 2nd place trophies and two 3rd place trophies. The girls also did great individually with the girls who entered solo batons and poms winning two first place medals and a 3rd place medal. The mascots of the day between them won four 1st place medals, four 2nd place medals and a 3rd place medal and the Leaders won three 1st place trophies for overall leaders of the day in their sections.

My late father Paul Gibbons with Tilly I mentioned to you all in my column for June the great shock that we had suffered when discovering that my father had secondary cancer in his liver. It was a very upsetting period for all of us when we saw my father being ravaged by the disease. In a little over a month he descended from a healthy looking man to skin and bone being unable to see or speak and jaundice too. It is with the greatest sadness that I have to tell you that Dad died on Monday, 13 June.

My mother and I were with my father at the end and after such a dreadful illness he slipped away peacefully. As I pen these words, I am preparing for my father’s funeral at Polstead Church on 27 June.

I previously alluded to the less than perfect manner in which we were treated by Ipswich Hospital. On 26 May our experiences were confirmed in National news reports painting Ipswich Hospital in a poor light. I told BBC Look East our story and many of you will have seen my mother and I on the local news bulletins during the afternoon and evening on 27 May. From such a sad episode there can be bright things to report. My mother and I have been humbled by the support given to us by our friends, clients and you my readers. The Reverend Jackie Sephton of St Mary’s Polstead and long time resident of Hadleigh was such a pillar of strength to my father and to us. I wish Jackie well following her ordination as a Priest at the Cathedral at Bury St Edmunds on 25 June; she is nothing short of a “super Vicar”. The kindness and care given to my father and to us at St Elizabeth Hospice in Ipswich was beyond measure. Should you ever wish to make a charitable donation then I know that St Elizabeth Hospice will use it wisely and to maximum effect. I was struck that whilst the Hospice handled such sad matters, everyone had a smile. There was a lovely garden where the centre-piece is a glorious fish pool. Relatives were provided with wonderful lunches at reasonable cost. I unreservedly thank St Elizabeth Hospice for all that they did to make Dad’s final days comfortable.

Despite trials and tribulations, the business of the provision of legal services continues. There is just about time to acquire that new house and have it conveyed before Schools return in September. To us, all our clients are “ours” and deserving of that personal attention which can be achieved at a local firm of Solicitors.

High Flyers A small group of Fidelis apprehensive ladies met at the gates of Rattlesden Gliding Club not quite knowing what to expect of their date with a glider. Happily, their anxiety was short lived. After a brief introduction to the inner workings of this engineless craft and a reassuring parachute they were ready to experience the thrill of becoming airborne. Sitting in front of an experienced glider each member made a smooth but rapid ascent towards the clouds with the aid of a tow rope. This plunged to the ground once the glider was aloft. The views from the cockpit were awe inspiring as the glider circled silently overhead. Surprisingly, given the absence of engine power, all landings were effortless and accurate.

Safety is paramount at the club and an enthusiastic, experienced team of volunteers manned all stations to ensure that the ladies were not only safe but also enjoying their first gliding experience. The special arrangement, which included two exhilarating lifts and three months’ temporary membership of the RGC, may tempt some Fidelis members to return for more of the same. Author Julian Hardman tells of listening to a comedy show on radio where panellists had to summarize a whole book in a couple of lines from a pop song. He says he couldn’t remember any of them except one. This guy had been challenged to do ‘the Bible’. Of course everyone laughed. His reply was brilliant, “then I saw His face/Now I’m a believer”. The song by the Monkeys, not the most long lasting or profound of cultural products though one of their better songs. But it was a great answer, not complete of course, and in the original it was, “then I saw her face”, but with a surprising level of understanding. Why? Because the heart of the Bible is that Jesus became a man, as we look by faith on His crucified, but risen face, we believe and see one who is still the Way, the Truth and The Life.

Is TV important to someone you know?

– The switch to digital For those of us on the Sudbury transmitter, the first crucial date is the 6th July 2011 when analogue BBC2 will be switched off followed by all analogue services stopping on 20th July. If a TV is not capable of receiving digital broadcasts after this date, the screen will be BLANK! For some people, although TV plays a vital role in their lives, they may find the switch to digital a step too far. There is an ongoing national campaign run by the BBC to inform us of how and when we will be affected and part of this is to identify and assist those older and disabled people who qualify for direct help through the Switchover Help Scheme. It has been estimated that 5% of those people entitled to help will fail to convert to digital for various reasons. To help combat this, Suffolk Acre has trained volunteers to spread the word in their communities so that people who are in direct contact with this 5% may know how to assist them to get the help to which they are entitled.

Who is entitled to help? A person is eligible if they: • are aged 75 or over or • have lived in a care home for 6 months or more or • get (or could get) Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Attendance Allowance, Constant Attendance Allowance or mobility supplement, or • are registered blind or partially sighted.

How much does it cost?

For those entitled to help, the standard offer is £40 (for everything) but free if the eligible person also receives: • pension credit or • income support or • income-related employment and support allowance or • income-based Jobseekers Allowance What does an entitled person get for £40 or free? A qualified installer will visit by appointment and provide for one TV only, easy to use equipment including a specially designed handset and if required, a new dish or aerial. (This offer applies even if the eligible person has already got a TV through another source that receives digital). There will also be a helpline to call for a year after switchover for any queries.

How do I fit in? There is concern that those people who are vulnerable and entitled to direct help may not receive it and even worse be ripped off by unscrupulous suppliers. If you know someone who you think is eligible for direct help but who has not applied for it, please can you encourage them to call the Help Scheme free on 0800 40 85 900 or go to www.helpscheme.co.uk. Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre As I boot up I see the shafts of sunlight coming into my room for yet another warm, dry, sunny day: until recently I was beginning to wonder what rain looked like. Even the Herd were looking forward to the rain so that it would lay the dust and encourage much needed grass to grow in the paddocks. However, the absence of rain was to our great advantage at the Hadleigh Show with a good turnout of visitors which kept our Helpers busy at our Stand: we raised £1,100 on the day making the effort well worthwhile; a big thank you to those of you who came and bought from us.

By the way, what did you think of our new Gazebos, or didn’t you notice?

Much bigger and in our colours too, with the Shelley name on them: from what I hear they looked great although, between you and me (Promise not to tell?), the first efforts to erect them where, shall we say, “Challenging” and created much debate amongst the group of Helpers who happened to be around and therefore “Volunteered” to do so……least said the better I think? Moving on: with Oaklands and the Regional Competitions fast becoming a memory, we now look to the RDA National Dressage Championship which will take place on the weekend of 9/10th July; this month! I know our Riders who qualified at Regional level have been working hard to put on a good performance at Hartpury and I only wish I could unbolt and unplug and join them on the day but…… I’m sure nerves will be on a knife edge but, with the support of their Helpers, carers, parents and supporters Jackie, Sarah and Zoe will come through and do us proud.

TELEPHONE COMPUTER SCAMS!!! COMPUTER VIRUSES!!!

Be warned that there is a company calling residential landline numbers claiming your computer has a virus and they will clear them remotely for free. They will ask for access to your computer and ask for details in order to clear these so called viruses all done remotely. DO NOT give any details such as passwords, bank details etc, (unless you have asked someone to call because you do have genuine problems). This company will claim to be from Microsoft Windows but are nothing to do with them.

People who have already been caught out by this scam found their computers not working and they could not connect to the Internet once they had allowed this company access to their computers, internet providers have been contacted and they found an icon on the desk top that was blocking the internet. Ask yourself this ‘How does this person know I have a problem with my computer?’ If you have not asked for anyone to fix your computer then it could be a SCAM! IFOR WILLIAMS TRAILERS There has been a spate of these trailers being stolen in the Babergh area over the last two or three months. If you do own one of these types of trailers please try and keep it out of sight, locked and secured as best as possible. Heels For Hospice Kick off your shoes and please donate any unwanted ones to St Elizabeth Hospice’s shop in Hadleigh.

During July the charity is urging people to clear out the shoes and boots they don’t wear any more for their Heels for Hospice campaign.

Shoes can range from high heels to flats or boots and men’s or children’s footwear as long as they are in useable condition.

All items will be resold in the Hospice’s shops to raise money for the charity, which costs £6.6m a year to run.

The weather has been the main tpic most people have been talking about this spring.

A very long spell of dry warm and windy weather. From the 15th May the Giffords Park site remained bonde dry, no wader or ducks to report from here. The first Lapwing Chicks were at an irrigation reservoir at Shelley. Four Little Ringed Plover, Redshank, Greenshank, Tufted Duck, Mallard, Coot, greylag Goose and a lone Great Crested Grebe were also on the reservoir. My first Swifts were of two flying over Layham Church on 3rd May. Lesser Whitethroat on 22nd April, Garden Warbler on 25th April and my first Sedge Jerry on the bridge he Warbler for two years was also on 25th helped build in 1990 at April at Giffords. Turtle Dove on 27th April Ynys-Hir, the venue at Layham Pits, Hobby on 6th May high currently featured on over the garden. Reed Warbler on 20th ‘Springwatch’ May at Semer Mere, Spotted Flycatcher 20th May on the River Walk. Other Hobby seen at Kersey Tye, Elmsett, Aldham, Layham, Raydon and Shelley during late May. Nightingales look like they have had a good breeding year, and young nightingales could be heard and seen perched three feet above the ground along the Railway Walk, Broom Hill and Ramsey Wood with adult birds calling out their alarm notes.

How many Cuckoo’s are being heard this spring? So far I’ve seen and heard them at Broom Hill, Layham Pit, Railway Walk, Bullocky Fen, Semere Mere, Ramsey Wood, Kersey Vale and Little Wenham Moat. Again three birds were in Ramsey Wood as last year, two males and a female. My friend Adam heard a Quail calling from crop of wheat in Stone Street, Hadleigh in late May. Early evening on Friday 10th June, 170+ Swifts were just gliding south west into the first rain showers above top of Angel Street.

Springwatch is being filmes from Ynys-Hir RSPB Reserve in Mid Wales, this reserve is in the village of Eglwysfach between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth. I know this reserve well because 21 years ago between April and the end of August 1990 I was a volunteer Warden there (where have 21 years gone to?). The first week was nonstop rain and the rest of the time was very hot and dry with most of Britain having a heatwave. The reserve covered over 1200 acres when I was there and I believe there have been further expansions in recent years.

Although there are several garden versions of many of this group, these two are extremely dangerous to humans. Even a small dose of the chemistry they contain will make you ill. Touching them can cause problems with your skin and if you were to eat even a small part of the plant you will need immediate medical help. Fortunately – although both have attractive flowers - neither of them produces any fruits that look appealing to children, so they are reasonably safe.

What are these plants?

Foxgloves (digitalis purpurea) These are very pretty flowers that grow mainly in woodland clearings. It is one of those plants that will colonise almost any area of freshly exposed soil (a ruderal). In the UK we actually admire it for its brightly coloured blue/purple and occasionally white flowers, but in some U.S. States is considered to be a “Dangerous Invasive Weed”.

The flower look like upturned thimbles and are very interesting – they’re purposedesigned to be pollinated by Bumble Bees Scientists believe that “bumbles” eyes are most sensitive to blue/purple and that the insect will follow any interruptive patterns in the coloured surface. If this is the case the bees can “see” where to go to get to the nectar. The lower lip of the flower forms a small “landing – platform”, and inside there are a series of spots designed to guide the bees to the nectaries at the top, where they get “dabbed” with pollen. Smaller insects (Ants) are deterred from “raiding” this nectar source by a carpet of fine hairs inside the floor of the flower.

They are unable to struggle uphill through this forest, but the “bumbles” are large enough to simply walk over them. Quite ingenious that!

The plant – particularly the leaves - contains a chemical that is the basis of a heart stimulant known as “Digitoxin”, but there is a problem. There is no individual, specific dosage, and many died from overdoses administered by the early Alchemists as result.

So – leave the plant alone!

Monks-hood or “Wolf Bane” (Aconitum napellus) Although it looks totally different to Buttercups (as you can see in Photo 2) this plant is of the same family (Ranunculacea). It is grown commercially for medicinal uses in parts of Europe and the Far East, but many countries are so concerned about its toxicity that special licences are needed. Fortunately it will only grow in very specific conditions (high moisture and low light) and finding it growing wild locally is unusual. The root system is interesting. Although a perennial, individual plants only lasts one year. Each season the roots produce not only the foliage you see, but also small “daughter” crowns. At the end of the growing season the old root dies, leaving these “daughters” to continue the next generation.

This plant is dangerous because the sap contains a toxic alkaloid (aconitine) which can be absorbed by humans either directly through the skin, into cuts and abrasions, or by ingestion. In the past infusions of all parts of the plant have been used to poison both people and animals.

Legend says the Roman Emperor Claudius 1st came to an untimely end when his Physician administered some, and it has been used to poison water sources in times of conflict It gets it lesser name (“Wolf” or “DogsBane”) from another historic use. Our ancestors, who were frequently troubled by Wolves, found that the animals were unable to taste the infusion made from the plant. Stories say that where the animals became problem bait was coated with it, the Wolves then ate the bait and died as a result (Wolves are scavengers). It was also said to ward off the “Werewolves”. So – if you do find it, leave it alone!

Babergh & Mid Suffolk residents vote differently on merger Voters in south and central Suffolk went separate ways in the local poll on proposals for a merger between Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils to form a single council. Across the two districts as a whole, 49.7% of the 64,069 residents who voted by post, phone, internet and text message voted ‘yes’ to the question as to whether the two existing district councils should be replaced by one new authority. 50.3% of residents voted ‘no’.

However, 39.1% of the 31,468 of Babergh residents who voted, voted ‘yes’ whilst 60.9% voted ‘no’. In Mid Suffolk, 59.9% of 32,061 residents voted ‘yes’ whilst 40.1% voted ‘no’.

Both councils had stated that only if more than 50% of those voting in both districts voted yes would the merger proposals continue to the next stage. On hearing the results of the local poll, Cllr. Jennie Jenkins, Chairman of Babergh’s Strategy Committee, said “local people have spoken and from these results those in Babergh are telling us not to go for merger. We are in very tough times financially, and the estimated additional savings from running one council rather than two, will now have to be found elsewhere.

“The integration of the two councils’ staffing structures and services will still go ahead but the two councils will remain as separate legal entities.

In addition, both councils will need to confront some difficult decisions in making their books balance over the years ahead”. Cllr Tim Passmore, Mid Suffolk’s Leader, added “It is extremely disappointing that we have a split view from our local communities about our innovative approach. We still face the difficult challenge of meeting very demanding financial savings while delivering front-line services and it is unfortunate that we cannot work more closely to achieve our radical and innovative idea for merger.” According to Charlie Adan, chief executive of both Babergh and Mid Suffolk, " “I would urge everyone to put their differences on the question of merger behind them and support both councils in our efforts to find even more integration savings, reduce spending and raise income to meet the impact of our financial constraints on services that residents need from us". “In order to meet our financial challenges we have tough targets for savings from integration that we need to deliver immediately and it is important that the hard work to do so continues”.

The Crisp Family Tree When young, aged 11 in 1944/45 Dave Croager used to visit Uncle on a farm in Hadleigh area, Uncle Arthur Crisp, but stayed with another Uncle and Aunt, Alice and Stan Crisp who he believes lived at Lawford. (Alice’s maiden name Rose). Both would be in mid 70’s now, but it is believed that Stan has died. Does any member of Crisp family or families living in Hadleigh area, recognise either the name of Uncle Arthur Crisp, or Alice and Stan Crisp?.

Birch Farm, Hintlesham Celebrate 20 Years In Childcare Richard and Diana Bryce diversified from farming into childcare in 1991. The nursery started with just 35 places, all located within a newly converted stable block.

Due to the number of children attending, more rooms were added in 1996 within the large farm barn, creating another 16 places.

Later that year an indoor heated swimming pool was added, to accommodate both swimming lessons and family swims.

With the change in families working requirements, a holiday club was started offering care for children from 2½ to 10 years every school holiday, full or part time sessions available.

In 1999, a newly built, homely baby room was added to support parents that found themselves returning to work earlier together with a new larger welcoming area for parents.

To compliment the childcare facilities, in 2003 a new complex housing a spacious activity centre, new changing facilities for swimmers, large cafe and open plan kitchen was opened. The activity centre is open to the public for children 5 and under and also offers children’s parties up to 12 years – play, swimming or cooking. The complex also provides ballet for pre and school children up to 8 years and a meeting room available for hire. The new complex has allowed swimming lessons to operate Monday to Saturday, offer open swim sessions for adults and parent and toddler, swimming parties and private hire.

In the past 2 years Birch Farm has continued to grow in all areas. The nursery can now offer 100 childcare places, yet still retains the homely environment created by the incorporation of many different learning areas in each age group. The activity centre now Building work begins, has the addition of an outside the roof arrives from Wales area ideal for warmer days.

Throughout the development of Birch Farm, Richard and Diana have endeavoured to offer the highest of standards, achieved by constantly monitoring and improving the facilities, as well as having the support of an excellent team of staff, of which there are now 42!

It will take place on August 6 and tickets are just £30 for adults and £20 concessions. All proceeds will go to St Elizabeth Hospice which relies on fundraising to meet its £6.6m annual running costs and ensure it can provide its services to the Suffolk community free of charge.

Participate in the Redrow Homes Suffolk Youth Games and realise your Sporting Potential Young people of Babergh are again training to participate in the Countywide youth games. This is an opportunity for young people to explore their sporting potential, having the chance to participate in professionally coached training sessions and compete in the Games on 10th July.

Events include Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Hockey, Squash, Tag Rugby and Tennis. Anyone is school Years 5-9 can participate, eligible years varying between events. This year, thanks to sponsorship from the Kensington Financial Group, a registration fee of just £5 will cover all training and attendance at the event itself. Last year Babergh participated in all events and walked away as winners of the Tag Rugby competition.

Participants from last year’s competition have gone on to develop the skills they have learned.

Last year, a member of our Hockey team and a novice in the sport at the time has gone on to play Hockey at county level. According to the boy’s father: ‘He thoroughly enjoyed the training and experience and was in January this year selected for the JAC sessions for Suffolk which culminated in him being selected for the Suffolk U13 1st XI. “Last weekend he played for Suffolk in the East Region Counties JAC tournament at Bedord, where Suffolk finished 2nd out of the seven competing eastern counties. “His success story was directly a result of your initiative and the encouragement of the Babergh coach - well done!”

Simon King, Babergh Community Sports Coach, added: “This example illustrates exactly what participation in the Youth games should be about.

“Taking young people, who maybe haven’t had an opportunity to be coached professionally, and enabling them to realise their potential allowing them the space and opportunity to develop.”

On Saturday 9th July 2011, between 10 and 11am, we will be taking part in the charity abseil event at Ipswich Hospital Maternity Block. We are both serving police officers in Suffolk Constabulary and will be abseiling 150ft in police uniform. We hope to raise as much money as we possibly can for St Elizabeth Hospice in Ipswich as they have been providing outstanding care for our father, Ray Kidd-Stanton. Ray was diagnosed with stomach cancer almost two years ago and he and the family have been supported by the Hospice in this time. Ray spent many years fundraising for the Hospice and he individually raised over £14,000 for the Hospice in this time through sponsored walks, raffles and dressing up for charity. It has now come full circle in that Dad needs the support of the Hospice himself. On Dad's behalf, we would now like to take up his fundraising mantle and help the Hospice as much as possible. We were able to raise £212.35, which has been forwarded to Diabetes UK to help with their continued research. Special thanks also to all helpers and those that gave Donations and Raffle prizes.

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts My thoughts at the moment are about gardens and holidays. I normally arrange my main holiday around the middle to the end of June. This normally fits in well with my garden. Most things are planted out so that they do not need to be watered, and my soft fruitcrops of Raspberries, Redcurrants, Blackcurrants and Loganberries will not be ripe. However this year everything is two to three weeks early, so we are certainly going to miss out on the Raspberries as quite early in June we have already picked a useful quantity. They will probably be a bonus for my friendly neighbour who minds my greenhouse. If you have a good sized garden with a greenhouse the friendly neighbour is a vital requirement for holidays. With good planning you can make it a lot easier for your garden minder and increase the survival chances of even quite exotic plants. I normally have a good variety of plants in the greenhouse, and the problem for the minder is getting the watering correct. What I do is stand all the plants that will need watering on trays filled with Hortag, then providing the pots are well bedded in on the Hortag and the Hortag is kept wet the pots will pick up the water that they need from the Hortag. So all your friendly neighbour has to do is keep the Hortag wet, Cactii and succulents will happily survive two weeks with out any water. so these plants are seperated from the others and watered well immediately before you leave, and are then left alone until I return. House plants can be a problem.

Some plants I move out to the greenhouse. Some that I have in hanging baskets (Lipstick plants and Columnea) are hung up outside in my trees.

For some that are delicate I make sure they are damp NOT wet and then put them in large plastic bags with the top closed. Finally my wifes couple of orchids stay in their normal position having been watered before we depart. Some people suggest standing house plants in the kitchen sink and feeding them with water by "siphonning" water to them with bits of wet string, but I have never got this to work to my satisfaction.

I learnt something from Monty Don the other night. Until then I did not know what a "Chelsea Chop" was. Monty suggested that if you cut some perrenials back hard in mid June they would bush up and the flower very well but later. I am trying this on one clump of Phlox and will report how it performs for me.

At the end of May the 3 month running figure was 22.6 mm (0.9”). Since 1997 the previous lowest 3 month figure was 52.9 mm (2.1”) in 2003. This gives an impression of how dry the last 3 months have been. However in the first half of June in Kersey there has been over 30 mm (1.2”) of rain, which is more than we had in the previous 3 months. The question now is whether we might now end up with too much rain. Only time will tell.

In May the maximum temperature was 24 Cel (75F), and the minimum was 1 Cel (34F), so May was slightly cooler than April, and a bit cooler than average, but again there were no proper air frosts.

In my garden the ground temperature in mid June is 15 Cel (59F) which is about normal.

Hints The lawns have been well and trully cooked. In early June we have had some rain, but not nearly enough. The grass is starting to go green again, but it will recover better if you do not cut it too short.

One of the things that will keep your garden looking good in July and afterwards is to cut off dead flowers. This is particularly true of annuals, and roses.

Dear Sir I have been a resident of Hadleigh for nearly 20 years, brought up my children here and continue to work locally as a registered nurse. I therefore would like to ask the people of Hadleigh for their support in my charity trip later this year. I along with two others have registered with Original Volunteers, an organisation which make arrangements for people to go to places all over the world to work as volunteers. The scheme we have chosen is a children’s home in Nepal and we plan to work there in November. The work is completely unpaid, and we have to find money for our flights and accommodation, while we are there and some basic equipment to take for the children, and so are doing what we can to raise the money for this ahead of time.

Dear Sir In the June issue, Jan Byrne asked the question why residents are complaining about getting a new fit for purpose community facility.

Well, as one of the residents who were “complaining” let me answer that question on behalf of the 460+ people who signed our petition against the town council’s decision to use their swimming pool fund money for the management fees of this new centre.

Contrary to the belief of Ms Byrne, not all of us are against the new centre, some are but some are not but what we all disagreed with was the spending of £2.4million pounds plus £30,000 annual management costs, at a time of cuts, on a venue that does not add anything to Hadleigh.

Virtually everything proposed for the new venue is already elsewhere in Hadleigh because the groups and organisations that used East House did not sit around for 3 years waiting for a venue; they went out and found somewhere else. Also other things have started up, such as the successful Porch Project which has over 200 teenagers registered with it. And this is really the crux of the issue, if we were getting a new venue that genuinely added to Hadleigh and not just duplicated what is already about then there would be less of an issue.

However, the new venue’s proposed services are based on the perceived need from Babergh’s 2008-09 research and no work has been done since their community engagement survey at that time (which had only 301 responses from the public) to recognise the changing circumstances in both Hadleigh and the economy generally in 2011. In addition this blind obsession that Babergh have with this new facility has meant they have not done any risk management on the many community venues and organisations that are at risk potentially because of this proposed centre. As an example, the Ansell Centre have invested money in improving their facilities in the last couple of years, this investment could be put at risk by a shiny new community centre that could suck room hire bookings away from this community venues and others in Hadleigh. For most of the proposed services this centre will offer, there is a similar example of a risk to other venues/groups. The irony of this is that if 20

Babergh were not so blind to be open to changing the services provided in the centre that this could actually be a positive development given that many community services such as libraries and children’s centres are at risk due to Suffolk County Council cuts. Alternatively Babergh could also look at some of the more innovative venues around the county for the inspiration they are sorely lacking on this.

The only risk management that Babergh did on how this centre would affect Hadleigh was on the High School Leisure Centre and bizarrely they graded the risk to the centre as low, despite people related to that leisure centre suggesting that the actual risk is more likely severe.

So, to answer Jan Byrne’s question, the reason why so many of us were against this was simply common sense. For the money spent this centre adds little of value to Hadleigh. If we were getting something that met needs not already served elsewhere then it probably would not have drawn the ire of so many of the people who signed our petition. Finally, I would like to say a belated thank you to all those who signed our petition and I am sorry that your voices were not heard, though that is hardly surprising as so far only a tiny percentage of Hadleigh residents have had a say on this.

All the discussion and planning on the subject has been completed and the final plan has now to be approved by our Councillors. We need to show our support and solidarity - once again - by attending the meeting in numbers to show that 76% yes vote in the referendum of 1999 still holds and not only is the need even greater as the population of our town continues to increase, but that our desire for an additional store is as great as ever. We need to attend the meeting at 9.00 am for a 9.30 am start. All members, friends and supporters will be most welcome.

The Army Benevolent Fund - The Soldiers’ Charity In this nation, today, there are several million ex-soldiers. There are also the Regular Army and Territorials who more than earn their pay. On 15th July there will be a collection to raise money for the A.B.F. in Hadleigh and surrounding villages. Everyone is entitled to ask why this should be - don’t we have Help for Heroes? Yes, we do. It is a most excellent charity that deals with the needs of the victims of current operations - basically that’s Iraq and Afghanistan.

The A.B.F. is the emergency bank for all soldiers and their families, whenever they have served, or wherever they might have done so. There are many old men and women who have served in World War Two. Some of them need help in care homes - or they have left widows without the means to support themselves. There are thousands now in their seventies who served in such places as Malaya, Korea, Kenya (against the MauMau) and Suez. In the sixties Aden, Oman, Borneo and Indonesia spring to mind - and so it goes on: Northern Ireland, The Falklands, Iraq. There were odd jobs at home too: fire crews when the fire services struck, and collecting rubbish when the bin-man wouldn’t.

Among these millions a few thousand fall on hard times every year. Maybe it’s old age, or accident, sometimes drugs and crime, but whatever causes an ex-soldier, Regular, National Service, or TA or war time conscript to need help, the Army and its charities are there to help. The Benevolence Bank is the A.B.F. legacy and many retired soldiers contribute to it voluntarily.

But, and it is a very big but, there are now very many old ex-Army men and women, and now we have the victims of modern war as well. The Army is actually smaller than it has been for over 200 years. The need is as great as it has ever been, and getting greater.

Before you say ‘so what?’, just remember how many ex-soldiers there are in your family - Grandpa, Dad, Aunt, Uncle, Cousin. Just possibly one of them might need help, one day. For when we rattle our collecting tin, please be generous.

News from The Station Welcome to the latest edition of news from Hadleigh Police Station. Our current priority in Hadleigh is dealing with youth nuisance and anti-social behaviour. This is often reported to us in many forms, and can range from young people playing football in the street, to intoxicated members of the public being rowdy on the way home from a night out. One thing that is causing us concern at the Station is the increased number of calls regarding the new Play Centre at the Calais Street Recreation Ground.

Generally at weekends, people are gaining access to the site by climbing the fence. Once inside the fence line, people are discarding litter, broken bottles, and even urinating in the children’s sandpit. This behaviour will not be tolerated. There are a number of criminal and civil offences to cover these incidents, but more importantly, there are obvious health and safety risks to the workers and children who attend this site. I urge any reader who may have any information relating to those responsible to contact me or any member of the team so that we can put a stop to these despicable reports. Imagine if it was your young son or daughter who picked up a piece of broken glass, or played in a sandpit that had been used as a toilet?

We have also been receiving numerous complaints from staff at Hadleigh High School, St Mary’s Primary School and Hadleigh Community Primary School. Outside of school hours the fields adjoining these premises are often used by members of the public for recreational use and dog walking.

Sadly, these areas are being abused by the minority and pupils of the school are unable to use the full areas due to large amounts of litter and dog faeces being found. If you drop litter it is your responsibility to pick it up. If you have a dog, it is your responsibility to clear up after it. We have a large supply of dog waste bags at the Police Station that have been provided by Babergh District Council. These are widely available to the public, and you can contact us if you require a supply.

In other news, we have been looking at the subject of bullying with the High School, and at ways in which this can be tackled. Our Safer Schools Officer, PCSO Patricia Gibson, has worked hard with the pupils to devise a campaign which will require pupils to voluntarily sign up to a pledge against bullying. Each person who signs up to the pledge will be given a key ring with the logo of the campaign “Say No To Bullying”. Josh Dewes, aged 13, won the competition to devise the tag line for the campaign which was “It’s not big to make others feel small”. But on an earlier hole another Newton pair and their opponents had both played the wrong ball with their second shots. They received preliminary advice that they should both accept a half and move to the next tee but, as the final match completed it’s last dramatic hole, it emerged Newton's other pair should have conceded the wrong ball hole because they had been the first to play incorrectly.

However, the sporting Woodbridge visitors urged Newton to accept a playoff as they had not expected the earlier advice to be altered and believed honour would be achieved by going into extra holes.

But Newton decided to decline the offer, believing that, despite the generosity of their visitors, they should accepted defeat by one hole under the rules of golf. Alan Cunningham, Newton club captain, commented: “It was extraordinarily generous of Woodbridge to offer a play-off but we felt it was not for us to go against the rules of golf and we decided to take our medicine and lose. It had been an exceptionally close match played in a wonderful spirit. In the end I believe the game of golf was the winner.”

Wattisham SSAFA Triathlon 2011 On 21st May 2011, Wattisham Station, home of the Apache Helicopter, hosted its 5th annual Triathlon in aid of SSAFA Forces Help InService. The triathlon takes place entirely within the confines of the Station, making it a unique event and incorporates a 300m swim, 20km on-road cycle and a 5km run. This year the event reached its maximum capacity of 300 entrants, made up of individuals, relay teams and teams of 3 individuals, novices and triathlon club members and all competed in a variety of race categories.

Thanks to our dedicated team of organisers and our generous sponsors – Agusta Westland, Aviation Training International Ltd, Serco, Aramark, local firm Hadleigh Buildbase, Nationwide National Recycling, Base Garage in Great Bricett and Stowmarket & District Cycling Club, the triathlon was another terrific success and raised almost £5000 to help and support military personnel currently serving at Wattisham and their families. The Wattisham AH Force Commander, Colonel Neale Moss OBE was in attendance to present the winning trophies, which included 1st Individual Male - Ross Welton (Royal Navy); 1st Individual Female – Lucy Bowditch (Ipswich Tri Club); 1st Military Male – WO2 Simon Day (Royal Navy) who finished 3rd overall; 1st Military Female – Maj Emily Greenwood (Army); 1st Relay Team Male – Team Rudland; 1st Relay Team Female – 21st Century Girls and 1st Relay Team Military – G Force.

St John Ambulance re-opens in Hadleigh On Monday 2 May, St John Ambulance re-launched its Hadleigh Division.

The meetings of the new division are hosted at St John Ambulance’s Hadleigh divisional HQ at 1 – 2 Monastery Park, Aldham Road, Hadleigh, IP7 6BJ at 7.45pm for an 8.00pm start. Alex Rose, newly appointed officer in charge of the division says, ‘We’re delighted to be resurrecting the adult division of St John Ambulance here in Hadleigh. If you’re over 18 and are interested in finding out more about our role in the community and the exciting opportunities open to members, please come along and have a chat.’

‘Incredibly 150,000 people die every year from the lack of first aid and training our youngsters is a vital element in our commitment to ensuring everyone who needs first aid should receive it. St John Ambulance in Suffolk has a thriving membership of more than 700, including adults and young people and provides first aid cover at sporting and community events across the county, as well as delivering a variety of health and safety and first aid training courses to members of the public and local businesses.

Captain’s Charity Ball 2011 On the evening of Friday June 10th, the Captain of Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club, Gary Chicken, held a ‘Charity Ball’ fund raiser for his charity of the year, ‘HELP for HEROES’. The evening commenced with a three course meal, which was followed by an auction and a raffle. The total raised during the course of the evening was the grand sum of £4,000! Dancing to a great group, ‘The Untitled’ completed a very enjoyable and successful evening.

Ladies Spring Meeting On Thursday 19th May the Ladies Section held their Spring Meeting. This was a Medal round in the morning on the Constable Course followed by a nine hole paired competition, on the Gainsborough Course, in the afternoon. The competition was followed by a meal, for 62 members, and prize giving, held in the Gallery Bar. The winner of the Salcombe Salver, for handicaps 0-20, was Fran Thomas with a nett 70 score. The runner up was Sandra Hodge. Daphne Shearing won the Suzetta Platt Memorial Cup, handicaps 21-36, with a nett 71. Maureen Adams was the runner up.

Newton Green Mixed Open Players from many parts of East Anglia took part in the annual Newton Green Golf Club mixed open – and brought with them the first wet day’s golf at the course for several months. However, despite the gradually deteriorating conditions as the day wore on, scores were good and Royal Norwich pair Chris and Liz Wallace took first place with 40 points.

Newton captain Alan Second were Kelvin and Angela Cunningham with mixed open Short, of Bentley GC, with 39 winners Liz and Chris Wallace points, ahead of Sue and Richard Sage, of Thorndon Park, with 37 points. Other awards went to the following: Ladies, longest drive, Nicky Topley, Lords of Rayleigh; nearest pin, Christine Concoran, Birch Grove. Men, longest drive, Chris Wallace, Royal Norwich; nearest pin, Barry Rockcliffe, Ipswich.

The event also included a section for Newton players, with John and Norman Humphrey coming first with 38 points, followed by Peter and Sally Cave 37 ocb, and Lucy Hensby and Peter Wordley 37.
