What’s on in Sudbury this September As the days get cooler and a little bit shorter, there is still plenty to do in Sudbury.

South Suffolk Leisure offer a wide range of activities for both children and adults at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre. Their supportive team can create personalised plans for individuals and their studio provides a great blend of group fitness classes whether you want to burn calories, tone and strengthen or holistic classes such as yoga.

Gainsborough’s House are putting on Gardeners’ Question Evening on September 4 with Prof. Stefen Buczacki. Stefan is best known for previously being the Chairman on BBC Radio 4’s “Gardeners’ Question Time”.

Heritage Open Day Print Workshop Demonstrations on September 11 at Gainsborough’s House with regular demonstrations showing different techniques of printmaking, free entry to the garden and demonstrations. Also on September 11 there is a lecture on the former Prime Minister; Robert Walpole which starts at 11am and is only £7.50 per ticket.

The Quay building is over 300 years old and has been operating as a theatre since the 1970’s, ring to book your tickets or go online for the shows such as Lady Windermere’s Fan by Oscar Wilde performed by Sudbury Dramatic Society from Tuesday 8th to Saturday 12th September.

The Town Hall and Heritage Centre will be open on Saturday, September 12 from 10am to 4pm as part of the national Heritage Open Weekend. Visitors will be able to view the Mayor’s Parlour and Assembly Room as well the newly extended Heritage Centre and Museum.

All types of events are held at St Peter’s, how many towns can boast such a beautiful church in the centre of their town which is regularly open for visitors to look around, as well as providing a venue for community events such as the very successful farmers market held on the last Friday of each month.

There are Boat Trips by the River Stour Trust every Sunday and Sudbury to the Sea takes place on September 12 & 13. Participants navigate the 37km of the River Stour from Sudbury to the Cattawade Barrier. More information can be found at www.riverstourtrust.org. American tourists descend on Sudbury Staff at Holmes & Hills Solicitors were surprised and pleased to discover the remarkable history of their office building in Sudbury.

According to old Town records, the building in North Street once belonged to Mark Catesby – a British naturalist.

Born in 1683, the selftaught artist Mark Catesby was the first naturalist to record the flora and fauna of the New World and is well known throughout Europe and America. His original artworks were bought by George II after the artist’s death, are kept in the Royal Collection at Windsor, and have been shown in an exhibition of early wild life art at the Queen‘s Gallery in Buckingham Palace.

Catesby was a man of exceptional courage and determination. He first crossed the Atlantic to America at the age of 29. After two long expeditions he returned to England with paintings of plants and animals he had studied and devoted most of the rest of his life to writing and publishing the first natural history of North America. His monumental ‘The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands’ was published after 20 years of writing and etching.

Earlier this year, the American-based Catesby Commemorative Trust published ‘The Curious Mister Catesby’, a biography and appraisal of the historical and scientific significance of his work. In May 2015, Mr David Elliot, co-editor of the book and chief executive of the Trust, visited Sudbury for the UK book launch at Gainsborough’s House.

On his itinerary was a visit to a building in North Street described on a 1714 map as ‘Mr Catesby’s House’ and which is believed to be part of the property Mark Catesby sold to fund his first expedition to the New World. The building is now split into two and is occupied by an 1905: The Catesby House in North Street Iceland store and partially used as a shop Holmes & Hills (Source: Sudbury Museum Trust) Solicitors. Mr Elliot was accompanied on his visit to the building by Jane Waring, president of the Catesby Commemorative Trust, who wrote the foreword to the book and Val Herbert, local historian and trustee of the Sudbury Heritage Centre. She commented that ‘Holmes and Hills have certainly been very sensitive in the redesign of the room which is now the reception. This is most gratifying’.

Sudbury solicitors organise charity ride in aid of Cancer Research UK Holmes & Hills Solicitors in Sudbury are once again organising their annual charity bike ride, this year in aid of Cancer Research UK. Taking place on Sunday 13th September, the ride offers the choice of three routes, all starting and finishing in Halstead.

Open to riders of all ages and abilities, last year the popular local event attracted 267 cyclists and raised over £6,500 for charity.

The annual charity event is in its tenth year and offers riders the chance to cycle through some of the finest countryside Essex has to offer. The local charity ride is always brilliantly organised by the local firm of solicitors who ensure all the routes are sign-posted and marshalled where necessary. The ride also boasts free post-ride food and refreshments for riders once they reach the finish line in the garden of Holmes & Hills office in Halstead. Holmes & Hills even provide a lunch stop at the half-way point for the riders undertaking the 25 and 50 mile routes, offering them the opportunity to recharge and re-fuel with some light snacks and refreshments before setting off for the return leg of their chosen route. Present at the lunch stop will be a local bike shop Torque Bikes, offering riders assistance in the event they are unfortunate enough to suffer any mechanical problems.

Announcing this year’s Charity Bike Ride, Phil Davies, Marketing Manager at Holmes & Hills said: “We are really pleased to be celebrating the event’s tenth year. It always receives great support from the local community, as well as our clients and contacts in Sudbury. Over the past 10 years we have raised tens of thousands of pounds for a wide range of charities. We hope to make this year’s ride the most successful to date and in so doing raise some funds for a very worthwhile cause, that is close to the hearts of many at Holmes & Hills.”

The event is open to everyone and there is a route suitable for all ages and abilities. 100% of the entrance fees will be donated to Cancer Research UK. The cost to enter is £12 for an adult and £6 for under 16’s.

Sudbury Talbot Art Show Sudbury Talbot Art Show is back again for 2015 at Saint Peters Church in September. Sudbury Talbot Rotary Club are calling all artists to produce their work to include in the art show and sale. There will be an invitational preview night on Monday 28th of September and the show will remain open each day from the 29th September to the 2nd of October 10-4pm.

The club is in process of contacting all previous exhibitors but wishes for more people to become involved new and shy! To add to the mayhem, Len and Claire have just been injured in a car crash and each of the four couples brings their own problems with them. With Charley being a prominent Government Official, and the guests needing to protect their own social standing and careers, to avoid any breath of scandal is paramount. When a second, accidental, gunshot leaves Ken temporarily deaf, and the police arrive, Len has to pretend he is Charley, concocting a funny, touching and fantastic explanation!

Rob Brooks, founder of the Eden-Rose Coppice in Sudbury invited the Sudbury Area Cancer Support Group to hold its monthly meeting at the Coppice in July.

The Eden-Rose Coppice is a natural woodland retreat specifically designed as a stress free refuge for people living with Cancer or terminal illnesses.

Working in partnership with educational institutions, most of the woodland development is carried out by young people living with learning disabilities, complex needs or life limiting conditions.

We were privileged to be joined at our meeting by the Mayor of Sudbury Jack Owen, who spoke to guests and learnt about the New Sudbury Area Cancer Support Group, a support group for Sam Chamberlain, Eden-Rose cancer patients and their carers, run by cooking one of our pizzas. local people. The pizza oven was fired up and guests enjoyed pizzas washed down with a glass of wine.

Ruth Worsley, Chair and Founder of the Sudbury Area Cancer Support Group thanked Rob Brooks, and his staff Sam and Fran for arranging such an enjoyable evening. It is hoped group members will return to the Coppice to enjoy its peace and tranquillity and help them through their cancer journeys.

Head Chef Justin Kett talks spa-inspired food for the health conscious

by The Swan at Lavenham Hotel & Spa Head Chef, Justin Kett, talks about the spa-inspired food being served at The Swan at Lavenham to appeal to health conscious foodies and spa goers alike.

The Swan is going through a very exciting time with the recent opening of Weavers’ House Spa. In June we launched a new aspect to the Brasserie menu featuring an irresistible selection of raw meals to make you look and feel great.

Our delicious wellbeing menu is an exciting collaboration with well-respected Suffolk naturopathic nutritional therapist Maggie Franks of www.deliciousnutritious.co.uk. All our dishes centre on the very best of fresh, raw ingredients.

Everything stays below 28 degrees, so you get the full nutritional impact of each ingredient. I learned a lot from Maggie following a culinary master class we did together such as: making sure nuts are soaked to get the enzymes working, so they break down in your body giving you all the nutritional value before you digest them. Vegetables are spiralised or cut fine on a mandolin, so you get the crunch, creating a lot of different textures. Maggie did a lot of the background research for me which I've implemented in the new menu.

We’ve also considered how people feel about what they are putting in their bodies to help those with allergens and gluten free dietary requirements. Just tell our waiting staff if you have any food related allergies or special dietary needs and we’ll do what we can to accommodate.

If you want to recreate these dishes at home, all the ingredients we use are pretty accessible in most good supermarkets, but you may need to hunt around a little more for some of the seeds and nuts. A couple of my menu favourites are the pear and rocket salad with pumpkin seeds cured in a little palm sugar, watercress, coriander and lemon dressing. Another wonderful dish is the Weavers' Green Power Salad with avocado, celery, grapes, honey almonds, gem leaves and young shoots. If you’re not a raw food convert yet, just curious, you can fuse your salad with a variety of healthy protein options such as steamed sea bass fillet, lemon grilled chicken or char-grilled halloumi.

And of course we still serve our famous afternoon tea for those that want to indulge a little more.

Pigs Gone Wild for St Elizabeth Hospice St Elizabeth Hospice has teamed up with Wild in Art to stage Pigs Gone Wild, which is set to be the biggest ever mass participation, public art event in Ipswich, raising £100,000 for the local charity.

The interactive sculpture trail will feature around 40 pigs, which will be on display for 10 weeks Norman Lloyd at the Suffolk Show across Ipswich and the with the first pig, Tally-ho Trotters Waterfront during summer 2016.

The life size pig sculptures, which will be beautifully decorated by artists and generously sponsored by local businesses, will be joined by more than 30 junior pig sculptures creatively designed by local school children and teachers, which will appear in litters across the town centre stores and venues.

Norman Lloyd, hospice special projects manager, explained: “Pigs Gone Wild will bring together businesses, schools and the local community in a way that celebrates Suffolk’s agricultural heritage and artistic heritage – with a host of benefits for everyone involved. “Wild in Art events are hugely popular wherever they take place, offering an excellent return on investment whether it be staff engagement, supporting local initiatives or driving sales and footfall.” After the 10 week Pigs Gone Wild trail, the large pig sculptures will be auctioned to raise funds for St Elizabeth Hospice, which will go towards providing vital care and support to more than 2,000 patients and their families every year.

The hospice revealed their first pig sculpture ‘Tally-ho Trotters’, at the Suffolk Show in May, and the art project is already well supported with Tower Ramparts Shopping Centre and Ipswich Central the first two companies to sign up to sponsor a pig, and St Margaret’s Primary School, Ipswich, eagerly snapping up the first junior pig. Jimmy Doherty, owner of Jimmy’s Farm, was also recently announced as patron of St Elizabeth Hospice’s exciting new project.

Wild in Art is one of the country’s top creative producers of high-impact, public art exhibitions, featuring large-scale, individually designed and decorated ‘animal’ sculptures. They recently worked with Norfolk charity, Break, to stage GoGoGorillas! in Norwich, which was very successful and brought thousands of visitors to the city.

Artists can now download an artist’s pack and template of the pig sculpture on the Pigs Gone Wild website and each artist can submit up to three designs.

Pigs Gone Wild is also supported by media partners East Anglian Daily Times, Ipswich Star and presenting partner Town 102.

Rowers were at their “Peake” at Party in the Park!

Following the recent Party in the Park event at Belle Vue Park Sudbury, the two winners of the day’s Rowing Challenge received their award complimentary Leisure Membership - earlier this week, courtesy of Peake Fitness at the family owned Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa. The prizes on offer at the event went to best male and Winners Katherine Cass and Sam Brigolibest female participant who Jones with Gabriela Niciejewska of successfully completed a Peake Fitness at Stoke by Nayland distance of 500 metres on a static rower at the Peake Fitness stand, in the fastest time. With the world record stated at 1 minute 14 seconds, the winning times of the day achieved by our two local residents were highly commendable! Katherine Cass achieved a time of 1 min 58 secs and Sam Bragoli-Jones a superb 1 min 30 secs. Both were thrilled to receive Membership at the award-winning Stoke by Nayland resort.

Chris Grimwood, Centre Manager of Peake Fitness said: “This year was our first in terms of supporting “Party in the Park” and we were delighted to be there to see so many people on the day, including a number of Peake Fitness Members. Me, Myself and Mum Wednesday 30 September 2015 A cheerful and inventive comic confessional about Guillaume Gallienne’s upbringing, his relations with his mother, and his eventual embracing of his inner heterosexual after growing up as a female-identified boy whom everyone assumes is gay. The film premiered at the 2013 Cannes Festival and in 2014 was nominated for ten Cesar awards and won five, including Best Film.

The Film and Supper Club is a monthly event held at the Courtyard Café on Gainsborough Street. On the evening the café opens from 6.00 pm, when you choose your table, organise drinks and relax. A buffet supper is served from 6.30 pm. There is always a main course; dessert; cheese board and coffee or tea. The Angel Inn at Stoke by Nayland is demonstrating its commitment to local, small-scale and artisan producers with a new ‘Farm to Fork’ initiative.

Farm to Fork is about knowing where your food comes from, how it’s been grown and raised and reducing the chain from farm to table.

Championed by Executive Head Chef, Mark Allen, the initiative was launched in August following the arrival of a Big Green Egg in the kitchen. Mark says, “We’ve always worked hard to source the best British produce at the Angel, but when we were planning our new Big Green Egg menu, we realised we had an opportunity to take this further.

“With Farm to Fork we want to directly engage people in the food story from life on the farm to delicious food on their forks. At a time when farming is in the news, The Angel Inn is showcasing the fantastic produce available locally, buying direct to bring the very best ingredients onto the menu.

“We are working exclusively with Slow Food producers Lower Dairy Farm in Nayland, to supply 28 day aged beef and rear rare breed pigs for us, with all the pork destined for the Big Green Egg. For me, it’s great to get out of the kitchen, visit and follow the progress of the animals on the farm and know I am sourcing the best possible produce for my kitchen.”

The Royal British Legion Sudbury & District Branch September saw the Order for the Poppy Appeal items sent to Head Office with a request for delivery by the end of the month when we shall be busy arranging Collections for the Appeal. The 2015 Poppy Appeal will be Launched by the Mayor of Sudbury on Saturday 24th October and Poppy Collectors will be in the Town and Supermarkets every day until Saturday 7th November.

Remembrance Services on Sunday 8th November are planned at St Andrews Gt Cornard in the morning when Members together with other Groups including Youth Groups form up opposite the Kings Head in Bures Road to progress to the Church leaving at 9.50 a.m. with a 10.15 a.m. Service. Wreaths will be laid at the Memorial at 11.00 a.m. after which the Parade will form up to march to the Stevenson Centre via Broom Street for light refreshments.

In the afternoon members and Groups together with the Mayoral Party will form up on the Market Hill to leave at 2.00 p.m. for a 2.30p.m. Service at St Gregorys. Following the Wreath laying at both the American and English Memorials the Parade will form up to return to the Town Hall via New Street and North Street. The Mayor and TRBL President will take the Salute outside the Town Hall before the dismissal of the Parade by the Parade Marshall Dave Beck. The Colchester Pipes and Drums will lead the Parade and we welcome anyone who would wish to join in please come along.

Armistice Day Wednesday November 11th the Act of Remembrance will take place outside the Town Hall beginning at 11.00.a.m. and all are welcome to take part. Following this the Branch President and Members together with the Vicar will progress to Chilton Airfield for a short Service and where a branch member will lay a Wreath on the USAAF Memorial. New Poppy collectors are always needed standing at a Supermarket or in Sudbury Town centre or making a collection House to House near where you live. The Poppy Appeal surpassed all expectations locally and the total for 2014/15 stands at £40,600. Do You Dare to Scare? Join The Scream Team and become a Scaresville Scarer!

Scaresville materializes in the grounds of Kentwell Hall every autumn, conveniently around Halloween! It is one of the UK’s top Scare Attractions.

Thousands of visitors experience about 25 scares, along an hour-long route through the buildings, woods and grounds. There are ‘special effects’ scares, complex scares and the downright simple ‘jumpers out’. Scaresville began in 2008, on a very modest scale. Every year it gets bigger, better and far, far scarier.

“Your adrenaline is pumping, your heart is beating loud in your chest, you can see shadowy figures moving towards you in the darkness... and then... you make them SCREAM, and laugh, and scream!! You retreat silently back into your hiding place until the next group comes along, with a big smile on your face.” Scaring is twice the fun of being scared. "We have a fantastic community of volunteer Scarers and helpers who make up what we call The Scream Team. and we are always looking for new members - scarers and operatives, some visible, some hidden; some who jump out and some who make noises.

There are also non-scaring roles available: wardrobe assistants, make-up, fixers and runners, as well as marshals and front-of-house assistants” said Patrick Phillips, the owner of Kentwell and the creator of Scaresville.

"Places on The Scream Team are voluntary, but we feed you before and after your evening’s scaring, and we provide you with any costume or makeup necessary. Scarers clock up ‘ScareMiles’ to claim complimentary tickets and other Scaresville goodies and members of The Scream Team will receive a year-long pass to enter Kentwell’s daytime events and house opening days.” said Mr Phillips.

In order to prepare for Scaresville, you need to be able to attend a Scare Academy training evening, where we help you prepare to scare, and the allimportant Dress Rehearsal evening.

Spunky Monkey Rally 2015 The Spunky Monkey Rally is non profitable, all our funds go to our chosen charities. This year we held the rally at Delphi Social Club grounds and we thank the Town Council for their support and for allowing us to hold it there.

The bar staff were fantastic, Emma and Lisa, well done and we hope to have you back next time.

Bikers and public came and went throughout the weekend and there was even a ride out organised on the Saturday, bikes rode off through Sudbury where they all enjoyed having many of the public taking pictures as they pulled up at the traffic lights outside the Silkworm. With a total of 81 bikes, trikes and of course many people passing through the gate paying for tickets and day passes, we managed to raised £1458.58p for our charities, namely E.A.A.A, Hodgkins Lymphoma Research, and Soldiers off the Streets.

We will be holding the Spunky Monkey Rally again next year - here are the dates for your diary: 17th, 18th, 19th June 2016. Our rally charity's are The Albinism Fellowship and N.A.B.D. We are supporting a Triker friend and his lovely family who have a two and a half year old son, Jake, who has the Albinism disorder. Albinism is a congenital disorder charactized by the complete or partial absence of pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes, due to absence or defect of Tyrosinase, a copper containing enzyme involved in the production of Melanin. Albinism results from inheritance of recessive gene allets and is known to affect all vertebrates, including humans. Albinism is associated with a number of vision defects, such as Photophobia, Nystamus and Amblyopia, a lack of skin pigmentation, which makes them more susceptible to sunburn and skin cancers. Our other Charity is N.A.B.D a charity for disabled bikers. As usual we welcome you all to come and view the bikes and enjoy the fun and games.

July and August was much quieter than the previous month from a Mayoral point of view, but the business of the Town Council and the Carnival activity have more than made up for it, by the time you read this the carnival would have been and gone and I haven’t got a crystal ball to say how it went, all I know is that the committee have worked very hard to improve on last years. At a risk of providing the ammunition for another writer in this magazine, the council are going through what can be best described as an efficiency drive which we hope will put us in a better position to provide a more effective service. Although this is likely to take a while before the benefits are felt, there is a desire by the current councillors to finish the work started by the previous council.

Moving onto the more savoury part of my report, I was privileged to be invited by the ‘Befriending Scheme’ to present the ‘Sophie Bavington Young Volunteer of the Year Award’ to the successful young volunteer who it was felt had made the biggest contribution in helping to improve the lives of people with complex needs. Sophie, the daughter of Tony & Carmel Bavington was an inspirational person who was an active member of the Befriending Scheme until her untimely death 3 years ago. The award covers the West Suffolk area with nominees coming from Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Haverhill, Hadleigh, Stowmarket and Sudbury, this year’s winner selected by Tony & Carmel was Gianni Rinaldi from Ipswich. It would be fair to say that every one of the nominated young people deserved the award, as all of them made a major contribution in improving the lives of those members of their community who benefitted from their work.

Party in the Park seemed to be bigger and better with more visitors this year than last, it is thanks to the hard work of the Town Hall staff and volunteers from several Town Councillors and other volunteers that contributed to its success, many local charities, organisations and entertainers had an opportunity to show off their skills which I for one thoroughly enjoyed, I particularly enjoyed many of the local young groups and vocalists who entertained the large crowd who stayed till the end to watch their performances.

I mentioned in my last report that I would have liked to support a ‘local Prostate Cancer’ group, unfortunately there isn’t one, but I did visit a local Cancer support group that has both carers and people who have been affected, we met up at the Eden Rose Coppice, a woodland area just off of the valley walk (the old railway line) that has been set aside and developed by Rob Brooks with the help of volunteers and support of children from the Hillside special School, a Sudbury School that helps and teaches children with severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties. We enjoyed a couple of hours of chatting whilst enjoying a piece of Pizza and a glass of wine and making new friends.

On the 23 July we were the guests of the Wattisham Army Base where we were treated to a rendition of old service songs by the Military Wives choir, which was followed by a fly past of 3 Apache Helicopters and then watching as one of these beasts took off, quite an exhilarating experience for the many dignitaries watching. I have thoroughly enjoyed my visits to the Red House Retirement Home, none more than sharing the celebration of Claudine Mathais 100th birthday, my next visit on the 25th July was their strawberry Tea event, the Red House seems to excel in providing a very good social service to their residents and neighbours.

Some of you would have noticed the change in the name of The Royal Oak to ‘The Gainsborough’ the new Landlord Darren Hall was the Manager of the Silk Worm 2 years ago but moved to manage a Pub in Oxford, I think, but he has returned to Manage the Gainsborough and held an opening event earlier this month, I was invited to officially open it and enjoyed the evening with close on 100 attendees and if the canapés are anything to go by I am sure it will be a great success.

Three very sad occasions happened during this period, I am referring to the funerals of Leslie Farrow, the Head of Woodhall School who had a tragic riding accident and the Funeral of Paddy Brotherwood who passed away after a short illness, Paddy used to care for the Sudbury Cemetery until recently, both will be missed by those who were fortunate to be in their company, the third was the very sad and untimely death of Reverend Greg Webb the Priest in charge at St Gregory’s church who passed away recently, Greg would always have a smile on his face and would always see the good in people, a well respected and influential member of the local community.

I cancelled my coffee morning on the 15th of August as it clashed with VJ day, my next one won’t be until October 17th in the Mayors Parlour at the Town Hall, then hopefully get back to holding one monthly.

Finally, one of my events to raise money for my charities was held at the ‘India’ Restaurant on the 10th of August where over 60 friends, family and colleagues enjoyed an Indian meal which raised £700 towards these charities, thank you to all who came along and to those who couldn’t make it but made a donation.

That’s my lot for this edition, my next report will be shorter because August is always a quiet month.

Nine UCI teams will race in the Aviva Tour of Britain from 6th to 13th September 2015.

Headlining the 20-team list are team Cannondale Garmin, who won the 2014 Tour of Britain with Dylan Van Baarle and the Etixx Quick Step team of Mark Cavendish and World Champion Michal Kwiatkowski. Top level British interests are represented by Team Sky. The other six UCI world teams that will race in the 2.HC ranked Aviva Tour of Britain – the first time the race has been sponsored by Aviva, the largest Insurer in the UK – are BMW Racing, IAM Cycling, Lotto Soudal, Movistar Team, Team Lotto NL Jumbo and Tinkoff – Saxo. Those nine, plus MTN Qhubeka, have been in action in the Tour de France, winning 13 of the 21 stages, and will line up with six rider squads in Beaumaris on Anglesey for Stage One on Sunday 6th September.

Landlords urged to act on new fire safety laws by Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service Landlords in Suffolk are being urged to act now to ensure they are ready for new safety laws aimed at saving dozens of lives a year nationally. From 1st October 2015 every private rented property will need to have a working smoke alarm on every floor as per the new regulation announced by Central Government. A working carbon monoxide alarm is also required in properties that use and burn solid fuels. Landlords must check the alarms are working at the start of every new tenancy with potential penalties of up to £5,000 if they don’t comply. To help landlords in Suffolk gear up for the new regulations, the Government has provided Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service with a number of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms to give out to local landlords.

New partnership set to inspire young people Local authorities in Suffolk have announced that they will be working with the Mason Trust to inspire young people about careers in the region. As part of this initiative, a new website and mobile phone app will be developed to provide young people with information and insight into the potential opportunities for fulfilling careers in the local area. The website and app will primarily target 13 to 24 year olds across Suffolk and will enable users to gain an understanding of what many local businesses do, what working for them would be like and what current career opportunities exist.

Suffolk County Council are investing in the development of the platform along with Ipswich Borough Council, Mid Suffolk District Council and also Babergh District Councils as part of a wider work inspiration programme of activity acroos Suffolk that aims to inspire young people to consider a broader and more ambitious range of education and career options.

The website and app will be developed over the next few months and will be officially launched at the upcoming Suffolk Skills Show on 21st October 2015 at Trinity Park. Empowering young people to make informed decisions about their future careers is one of the key objectives of the Mason Trust, a charitable organisation that has already helped over 10,000 young people achieve their goals.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 As grey clouds gathered and the rain came down over three hundred friends and supporters rolled up for the SESAW Open Day at the end of July. A big thank you to everyone who helped raise over £3,300 at the Dog Show, Fete, BBQ and Refreshments marquee. Even Jazz Galore braved the weather to entertain us!

Open Day aside, my canine pals and I had a lovely summer, unlike a three year old Lakeland-X that has been with us since May. Buster is a tiny bit stupid, he kennel guards and sems very fierce. Everyone passes by, thinking he would kill his neighbour but once out, they happily go for a walk together. He’s getting quite depressed watching all the others come in and go before him. He would be best as the only pet 'cause he wants all the fuss. Come and see Buster but ask someone to get him out of the kennel and give him a chance.

I’ll be in trouble with Ollie (the Black) Cat if I don’t also mention the many cats longing for new people to own - that’s what he said! Hopefully they will leave us sooner than a family of ferals, homed last month after waiting at Sesaw for nearly four years. Thank you to everyone who turned up for the Long Melford Street Fair in July, despite the pouring rain, just like last year! As usual many people stopped to browse and chat. The girls returned soaking wet yet still ready to do it again in 2017, but with a pop up gazebo next time!

I must mention a gentleman named Tibby Maxim who is having his flowing locks shaved off to raise money for five good causes, including Sesaw. Do encourage him if you are around Cavendish Football Club on Saturday 19th September, after the match. If you are visiting Hadleigh for the Year of the Sheep Grand Finale on Saturday 26th September, please pop into our £1 Sale for bargains and refreshments. Fraudsters in Ermine and Removal Vans If one thinks that the antics of the inhabitants of London’s Reptile House (aka The House of Commons) is audacious enough its immediate neighbours the Invertebrates (as in spineless) in the House of Lords now beggars belief. Those greatest of satirists Gilbert and Sullivan could not do justice to their current antics. Apparently there exists some 780 of these ermine clad time servers most of whom serve no apparent purpose, that is more than 150 that are kennelled next door. A minority have honourably fought to preserve our freedoms from the excesses of government including such Law Lords as Sudbury’s Lord Andrew Phillips (now sadly retired) ensuring the demise of the ID card and other freedom curtailing schemes. However, what justification can Cameron have in seeking to appoint up to 50 more? The current cost to us, the taxpayer, cannot be acceptable. £300 a day for just signing in and consuming a goodly subsidised lunch, would only be acceptable in either the public or banking sector, just check out the BBC or Health Authorities gravy trains.

A fine example of our Honourable Peerage is Lord Hanningfield with an enviable record of public service we should all seek to emulate! Given a nine month sentence for defrauding the gullible electorate of Essex he was subsequently released having served but nine weeks. And upon gaining his freedom he, quite legally, proceeded to continue claiming £5,700 for 19 days of signing in at the House of Lords in July. His justification, he still had his household bills to pay. How can he continue his mendacious habits? Because his chums that rule us think his behaviour acceptable.

And now our leader seeks to appoint even more of these odious creatures to that ancient institution at a further cost of at least £1.3 million a year. And since the overhaul of the upper house with the sacking of the majority of hereditary peers has the place better mirrored society as a whole? Don’t be silly, at least a third are professional politicians and 24 are Bishops, why for God’s sake, shouldn’t they busy themselves arresting the decline of our Established Church?

Now for a sad tale far nearer to home. A lady reader has informed me of something that this old cynic found somewhat terrifying. Having to downsize due to divorce she purchased a smaller property and left the marital home.

She was recommended a removal company, some gentlemen appeared and duly loaded all her belongings on to their van. Once secured, their leader then demanded of her extra cash as he supposedly had underpriced for the job.

Questioning this doubtful practice she was informed that as they now had possession of her chattels she had very little choice. Eventually they settled on a rather large fee - this was actually all she had following her rather expensive and acrimonious divorce. Once ensconced in her new home she found the courage to report the matter to the people who had recommended this company. Their response was that the matter was solely between her and the movers.

However, what is of greater concern is that those same people continue to recommend the company and the same act has been perpetrated on yet another single and vulnerable lady. Sworn to secrecy I have been unable to contact the authorities, so if you are moving home, take care!

Sudbury Bowls Club The internal club competitions are well under way at Sudbury Bowls Club outdoor section and the first of the trophies – The Memorial Cup – has been won by a team of ladies.

Triples teams were randomly drawn and each one played the best of seven ends against three other teams, with the total number of shots won determining the winner. Jacqui Edgar, Eileen Parker and Susan Monkman lifted the trophy recording an impressive 39 winning shots with only 10 shots against them.

Stoke by Nayland reach Norman Plum Final Stoke by Nayland have set themselves up for an Essex County team final, in the Norman Plum Trophy, after an exciting semi final against Abridge. They will face Chigwell GC at Boyce Hill on September 13th. The format of the competition is to have six away players and six at home but the final is held on a neutral course.

At home Dan Brown and Dan Goddard led the team out, facing a tough match as they Left to right: Ian Benson, Craig Morton, were giving away 11 shots to Marcus Harden, Tim Dickens, their opponents from Abridge.

A two hole lead was pegged back at the turn but the 17th proved decisive as they went one up with one to play. Dan Brown then put his tee shot ten foot from the pin to go on to half the hole and the first point was on the board. The second pair, Gary Thompson and Chris Williamson, was three down at the turn but fought back to also win the match one up. Karl Cansdale and Kyle Worster faced some very difficult Abridge opponents and were unable to secure the third home point.

There was an anxious wait for news from Abridge but then the team heard of a remarkable 3-0 victory, away from home. Dean Brace and Tim Dickens were first out and triumphed with a win, 2 holes up. The same score was recorded

by Ian Benson and Keith Hodgson. The icing on the cake was a 8 and 6 win by third pair Marcus Harden and Craig Morton. With an overall score of 5-1 Stoke by Nayland were through to the final in September.

Handy Tony beats field of 132 at Newton Green Newton Green’s annual flag ship event, the Jonathan Lambert Festival of Golf, enjoyed record support from members and a week of fine weather.

Retired village shop keeper Tony Mitchell had special reasons to smile at the Saturday night presentation evening as earlier in the day he had led home the field in the main event of the week.

Tony had his handicap cut from 26 to 23 as a result of carding an impressive 43 points to lead the biggest ever field of 132 competitors in the Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver. Handy man and Tony Mitchell seniors member Tony, having already built an & Jonathan Lambert all-weather cab for his golf buggy, is now using his retirement to try and achieve a handicap of 18. Best lady in the salver was Jenny Downes on 39 points, with Alice Barlow best junior with 34.

Jonathan Lambert with festival week winners Running alongside the Stableford competition, was a scratch contest for the Carole List Goblet, which was won by Ben Uttridge with a four over part 73.

During the week Tony Mitchell had also picked up the Kiskadee Trophy on Thursday with partner Lynne Hart, who also got her hands on the winning sheet for being part of the team which won the Wednesday Stablelford team event. Peter Philpott, club chairman, commenting on the success of the week, said: “Things could not have gone better. We aim to be an inclusive club and the festival shows just what that means. With eight events across six days everyone comes together to enjoy social golf.”

Stoke-by-Nayland Ladies Championship Competition 2015 Saturday, 25th July saw Stoke-by-Nayland Ladies section undertaking a gruelling 36 hole competition to determine their Ladies’ Champion for 2015.

They started the day early, from 8am on the Gainsborough course.

Stopped for a light lunch then continued from 1.30pm to play the Constable course in the afternoon. What started out as a cloudy, damp and windy day ended in wonderful evening sunshine.

All the ladies were weary when the 18th Constable was finished and everyone deserved a prize but there could be only one winner of the Championship and that was Sybil Paton. Well done Sybil.
