Over sixty visitors will be in Sudbury April 30th - May 4th to celebrate thirty years of twinning with the French town of Clermont l’Oise. The Twinning Charters formalising links between the two councils will be ceremonially signed by both Mayors at the Town Hall on Sunday May 3rd, accompanied by Woodhall School Choir and Sudbury’s bagpiper. Stretching is vital for muscle health. Whether you are a professional athlete, play amateur football, hockey, rugby or basketball, a keen cyclist, runner or swimmer, even if you are just walking the dog every day, no matter what your level of fitness keeping muscle flexibility is key to good muscle health.

Stretching before exercise helps prepare the body for activity by increasing the circulation of blood to the muscles and clearing the lymphatic system around the soft tissues. Stretching helps increase flexibility and joint range of movement preventing injury and improving muscle and joint performance.

HOW TO STRETCH GENTLY and SLOWLY take each muscle to the point when you start to feel a resistance, GENTLY hold the stretch for 30 to 60 seconds, allowing the muscle to release and grow longer. DO NOT cause yourself any pain – there’s no need.

CAREFUL - If you take the stretch too far you can cause an inflammatory response, meaning your body will try to repair the damage. Every time you feel pain when stretching you are actually causing damage to the soft tissue.

Stretching is also used in the treatment of injuries and the rehabilitation from injury or surgery. I use stretching within part of my treatment plans for anyone who is injured and by using a number of stretching techniques maximum performance is quickly and successful regained.

A budding young actress is celebrating after winning the first award of its kind at a prestigious performing arts festival Zoe Troy, 10, was named the first winner of the Wardale Williams Award for Excellence in Speech and Drama. The award was presented for the first time as part of the long running Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts.

Jan Osborne, chairman of the festival, said: “We are delighted to have been able to introduce this award as part of the festival, which rewards an outstanding performance.

The judges and independent adjudicator chose Zoe, who lives in Bury St Edmunds, due to her impressive use of facial expression, which helped her to deliver great stage presence and I would like to congratulate her on such an excellent performance. I would also like to thank Wardale Williams for supporting the festival and allowing us to present this prestigious award.”

The Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts is a competitive festival open to people of all ages. It gives an opportunity for people to perform in front of an audience and to receive an expert and friendly assessment from a professional adjudicator. The festival started in 1922 and now offers about 400 classes in the three main branches of the performing arts; music, dance and speech.

People from across the East of England take part in the festival. Martin Russ, Wardale Williams, director, said: “We are delighted to be supporting this important festival, which is an established part of the Sudbury calendar. As a local company, for many years standing, we always try to support the local community in any way we can and is why we decided to offer this award. I am also very pleased to present the award to Zoe who was a very worthy winner.”

The day-long event at Rushbanks Farm and Campsite, near Bures, included canoe trips, nature walks, art lessons and an evening folk concert and barbecue. Gareth Bates, from Rushbanks farm, said: “I was determined to do something positive for the society and all the people they support so brilliantly. It was all about having a day of fun in the great outdoors and despite the weather everyone clearly had a great time.” River Stour Boating provided canoes and guides to take paddlers on river trips - some for the first time in their lives.

Steve Mann, River Stour Boating Director, said: “The wind and rain made it quite interesting at times but it was great to see so many people enjoying this beautiful river. It can be a bit daunting if you haven’t canoed before and we were all very impressed with how they were all prepared to give it a try.” A nature walk under the guidance of Neil Catchpole, Project Officer at The Dedham Vale AONB, was followed by an art class with Barri Appleby cartoonist for the Beano and Dandy comics - who showed techniques for drawing animals and birds. Julie Marco, WSBNAS volunteer, said: “It was a wonderful day and we can’t thank Gareth and all the other people who made this very special day possible.”

Pirates needed to join the Midnight Walk crew Ahoy me hearties, St Elizabeth Hospice is on the lookout for pirates to join their crew for the Midnight Walk on Saturday 16th May 2015.

Men and women can choose to walk or run one of three new and improved routes which all start and finish at Ipswich Town Football Club; the five mile, eight mile, or the more challenging half marathon. Gavin Lamb, event organiser, said: “The Midnight Walk is fast approaching and we’re all getting really excited for the biggest and best night of the year! “We’ve already got over 1,200 people signed up and that number is going up all the time – so sign your crew up now.” Pirate fancy dress is optional, but if you do want to dress up, then head to your nearest St Elizabeth Hospice shop where you can get your hands on an array of pirate fancy-dress all for £5 and under. If you don’t want to take part in the event, but still want to be involved, why not volunteer on the night and join the Cap’ains Crew! Without volunteers, the Hospice’s biggest fundraising event of the year wouldn’t be possible, so could you spare an evening to help your local Hospice?

I couldn’t help it! I just had to take a nap in my new igloo and that pompous puss rattled off April’s news! Mind you, it is a lovely, cosy bed sent in by my Kettlebaston fans, Peter and Val so I don’t really mind, and Ollie (the Black) Cat did a good job last month. My canine pals and I enjoy playing outside on warm, dry days, finishing up with a thorough dust bath! Some of our supporters are also busy in the garden, growing plants for the Leavenheath Open Gardens Day on 14th June. Visitors can look around the Sanctuary on the day, and browse our gardening stall. Prior to that, the volunteers will be holding a two day Bank Holiday garage sale at SESAW from 10am to 1pm on 23rd and 24th May. Thank you to everyone who helped raise £1054 at our Easter Fayre in March and over £2500 at our April table sale in Long Melford. Customers, stallholders and our helpers all enjoyed the day and agreed that The Old School is an excellent venue.

At the time of writing permanent homes are needed for a selection of animals including a pair of degus and several rabbits. We also need more volunteers in the mornings to care for the animals and walk dogs. If you can spare three hours to help once a week please leave your details on the answerphone.

I’m off for a run around the garden with my friends and I hope you didn’t believe the story Ollie told you last month? I was just checking the bait was tasty enough when they found me in the trap. Anyway, the silly thing must have been faulty to catch me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua!

Full Steam Ahead at Bridge Farm Barns Following a very successful event last year, Monks Eleigh Bygones Collectors Club (M.E.B.C.C) are returning to Bridge Farm Barns (Corn Craft) on Sunday 10th May with an exhibition of their vintage machinery which include steam engines, cars, tractors & motorcycles plus displays of other bygone collectables. As well as the vintage vehicles and curios, there will also be a flying display of birds of prey from Lavenham Falconry. Ambitious campaign off to an encouraging start A campaign launched to raise awareness of the importance of having regular eye tests and to raise money for a childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cancer charity has had a successful start.

The family of Keira Dixon, of Sible Hedingham, teamed up with opticians Wardale Williams last month to launch the Keira Campaign.

Keira,17, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in February 2014 after optometrist Greg Hybel spotted worrying signs when carrying out an eye examination at the Wardale Williams Halstead practice. Greg immediately referred Keira to hospital and the next day she was Amanda Skinner of Wardale Williams with a CLIC Sargent transferred to the intensive care ward at Great collection box.

Ormond Street Hospital and within five days underwent life-saving surgery. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of the importance of having regular examinations and to raise money for the charity CLIC Sargent, which has been supporting Keira since her diagnosis.

Around ÂŁ1,600 has already been raised during the campaign, which is due to run until July 2015. Keiraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s brother has raised more than ÂŁ1,300 in sponsorship for taking part in the forthcoming London Marathon and Wardale Williams has donated ÂŁ250.00 to the campaign. Supporters have also been making donations at the Wardale Williams practices in Sudbury and Halstead.

Keiraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother Amanda Dixon, said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I am delighted the campaign has got off to such a good start and we hope to raise as much money as possible for CLIC Sargent who have been a fabulous support to Keira. However, we want to raise awareness of the importance of having regular eye examinations because if the signs had been spotted by Greg when they had Keira might not be here now.â&#x20AC;? Since her lifesaving treatment Keira has undergone more than 30 sessions of radiotherapy, lengthy periods of steroid treatment and has MRI scans at Addenbrookesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Hospital in Cambridge every three months.

The campaign is now also being supported by the Wardale Williams practice in Haverhill and its sister company Observatory the Opticians, which has practices in Southwold, Beccles and Ipswich in Suffolk, Leigh-on-Sea in Essex quotation and Muswell Hill, north London.

Mayor put his ears to the test Staff at a newly established hearing centre in Sudbury welcomed the Town Mayor this week in a bid to raise awareness about the importance of having regular hearing checks. Hearing Care Centre Managing Director, Karen Finch, wants to help eradicate the stigmas attached with hearing loss: “Research shows that people avoid doing something about a hearing problem for up to 10 years. People don’t like admitting that they don’t hear as well as they used to because they feel like they are conceding to getting older.”

“The truth is that if you can’t hear and you are asking people to repeat themselves or you have the TV up too loud you appear much older than if you wore a discreet hearing instrument that could help you hear better.”

Sudbury Mayor’s Report Hello everyone, well I’m now moving into the final stage of my Mayoral year but judging from what the events I went to over the last month and those booked until 12th May things will stay busy! The first event of the month was on the 18th March when I attended the launch of the Volunteer Plus programme at the Befriending Scheme which looks to give support to new volunteers to help the scheme’s clients. I have attended two or three events and have always been impressed by Shirley Moore and her team’s focus and energy in providing friendship and learning opportunities for vulnerable adults. As part of their obligations the Council holds an Annual Town Meeting which was held on 18th March. This is an opportunity for voters to come along and hear about the services of the Council but also to ask questions of the Council on an informal basis. The meeting was quite well attended and there were a range of questions asked about life in the Town. It really is a good opportunity to find out about what is going on.

On the 21st March I held another of my fund raising events for my nominated charities. This event was a variety music night and was held at St Peters. There were the vocal group, the Accidentals singing jazz and popular songs from the forties and fifties, the Institukes – a ukulele band, a choir from Thomas Gainsborough School, who on one of their first outings as a group sang very well and there were solo spots from Laura Barnard, a very talented singer who attended Ormiston Academy. A fine concert and we were able to raise around £700 for the charities. The next day, the 22nd, was the final concert for the Sudbury Festival. This concert brings together many of the prize winners of the individual sections to show case the talent in the festival. There were singers, dancers, musical performances, and drama and speech performances.

Amongst the large audience were the Mayors of Stowmarket and St Edmundsbury and they were very complimentary about the range of talent we have in Sudbury which was very pleasing to hear. If you have never been to this concert before it is a wonderful showcase of local talent and a great afternoon out. On the 23rd Hilary and I attended a dinner given by the Rotary Club to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing of their charter. Both Rotary Clubs in Sudbury raise a great deal of money for charity and I was very happy to go along to share in their celebration. The evening ended with a performance by Charlie Haylock the very knowledgeable and witty speaker about all things Suffolk.

On the 27th March I went along to the Hearing Centre at the Health Centre to help promote the idea that hearing is an important sense and should be looked after so I was happy to have my hearing tested (it was normal) and pose for pictures with devices in my ear if it helps get more people to look after their hearing. By the way the more I go into the new Health Centre the more impressive it looks.

In the evening of the 27th Hilary and I went along to a reception given by the Chairman of Suffolk County Council, Christopher Hudson in Kesgrave. The event was extremely well attended by Mayors across the county, Council leaders and leaders from the military, police and fire service.

The 28th was the day of the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra concert which I attend in both an official and playing capacity. The concert was very well attended and the performance of Rachmaninov’s 2nd piano concerto (No 2 in Classic FM’s hall of fame) by Jill Morton was very well received.

On Good Friday, the 3rd April was the day of the Sudbury Fun run and its traditional that the Mayor starts the run and awards the prizes at the end.

Unfortunately it was one of those extremely cold days you get in spring and so you had to keep moving to keep warm! Still there was a very large turn out and lots of cheering. I can report that sounding the hooter at the start of the race is very satisfying as is being able to award the prizes at the end. The fastest runner did the distance in 26 minutes which was impressive – but everybody should be congratulated for turning out on a cold day. Immediately after the Fun Run we went along to the rowing club to take part in their start of the season ceremony.

The Mayor is honorary president and so it’s their honour to raise the club pennant to mark the beginning of the season. On Easter Saturday Hilary and I attended the Easter raffle at the Catchpole Court care home to help raise funds for some very needy people.

On 18th April I attended a photoshoot to help promote the Rotary Club Spring Gardens event to publicise the beautiful spring gardens in Sudbury and to raise money for the Rotary Club charities. I then hot footed to the Sudbury Choral Society’s Spring concert, again both in an official capacity and in a playing capacity for their wonderful Opera Choruses concert which proved very popular with the audience.

As this is likely to be my final Mayor’s report I thought I would just give a flavour of the things coming up before the end of my term. There are a number of events booked but the biggest areas of activity centres around a twinning visit from our friends in Clermont in France when there will be events celebrating 30 years of being twinned; also there will be commemorations centred around the 70th anniversary of VE day. The strangest thing I will be doing over the period is on the morning of May 1 to “taste the meadow grass” to see if it is fit for the cows

to graze on the meadow – another one of these ancient traditions that makes us who we are. The work of the Council has died down as it’s the normal practice not to make decisions that may constrain a new Town Council – a new one will be elected on 7th May. Many people have asked me how you become Mayor.

The starting point is that you have to be a town councillor. From that there are a number of factors that will affect things: strength of individual parties on the council, who is available, what needs to be done. I consider myself fortunate that after first being elected in 2011 as town councillor I was able to be Mayor on 2014/15 - whether I get another chance depends on the voters of South Ward on the 7th May! The things I have learned from being Mayor firstly is that the Mayor is very important to the town. You can see in people’s eyes how important it is to have “The Mayor” at their event and as Mayor you feel the goodwill of people when you go to the events (and I reckon I’ve done about 130 over the year). I’ve also learned about the amount of work carried out by the Town Hall staff to deliver services (at least 35 different ones on my count) to Sudbury. The Mayor works closely with the Town Clerk (Jacqui Howells) and the staff (23 of them) to manage things through. The change in Town Clerk this year has made this last year particularly challenging but I’ve always found the Town Hall staff very supportive and willing to help everyone and the ship has kept on course.

The other thing you find out is just how much activity there is in Sudbury. The support for my charities and my work to develop a link with Mali has been very clear to me. Then there were my visits to charities that have been started by determined individuals that help many vulnerable people in the community.

There are also the many social clubs and activities and of course the contribution of businesses and public services. These all go to make up the rich life we have in Sudbury. I know from speaking to people outside Sudbury how well thought of Sudbury is.

I would just round off by saying that it’s been an honour for me and my wife Hilary to be able to serve as mayor and Mayoress.

Buying a property in joint names?

As a family lawyer, I always urge others to consider carefully how they wish to own their property, and to consider the long term. What do you want to happen to the property in the event your relationship breaks down or in the event that one of you dies?

I have recently dealt with three cases where parties have purchased properties in joint names. The first case was a young couple. The young man had been saving for a deposit since he started earning and he had saved £15,000. He was engaged, and his girlfriend had saved £5,000. They purchased their first home together in joint names but unfortunately as soon as they purchased the property the relationship ended.

As the property was purchased in joint names the young woman is now seeking a sale of the property and 50% of the net proceeds.

If the young man had to considered what would happen in the event that the relationship ended he could have protected his interest. The property could have been held in unequal shares; or he could have received a greater share of the proceeds in view of their contributions. In a similar case the parties purchased a property in unequal shares, however, there was no Trust Deed.

The shares were recorded but it was disputed as to how they should be calculated resulting in the matter being resolved at Court. In a third case, the parties purchased the property in joint names with unequal contributions with only one party contributing to the deposit. The relationship ended after purchase, however, fortunately in this case the other party recognised that she had made no contribution and made no claim against the property.

These examples reflect how important it is to consider how you wish to hold your property at the time of purchase and what will happen to the property in the event that your relationship ends or one of you dies.

Ways your solicitor can assist:(i) Your solicitor can draft a legal document known as a “Trust Deed” or “Declaration of Trust” which can confirm both parties’ intentions in respect of the property. (ii) Cohabitation Agreement. Your solicitor can assist you in drawing up a contract detailing the terms upon which you and your partner will live in the property.

Your solicitor can advise how you should hold the property in the event one of you dies as your shares will be managed differently if you are joint tenants vs. tenants in common.

With this advice in mind, give some thought to what you wish to happen to your property in the long term and discuss this with your solicitor.

TV Game Show Crashes Sudbury Website It seems like everyone has an opinion about ITV’s recent addition to Saturday night TV, a quiz show called “You’re Back In The Room”. Hosted by Philip Schofield, the show employs the skills of stage hypnotist Keith Barry to make the games much more difficult. Barry puts contestants into hypnosis and gives suggestions that make them respond in unusual ways, making otherwise simple games much more difficult, with hilarious results. The first program provoked such divided and heated opinion that the show was often referred to as ‘Marmite TV’. Many Hypnotherapists loved it, but many said it was terrible PR for them; many viewers thought it was the best thing on TV, others thought it was all fake. Arguments exploded in pubs, online forums and on social media. Sudbury based hypnotherapist Benjamin Ryan was able to give some insight into these arguments, having been invited to the filming of the first episode, so he wrote a blog post called “You’re Back In The Room – Real or Fake? And other hypnosis questions”. Benjamin said “I expected the post might get a few dozen readers and a few comments, but I was entirely unprepared for what happened!” During the broadcast of episode 2 Keith Barry (the show’s Hypnotist) tweeted a link to Benjamin’s post, with the comment “[Benjamin Ryan] is a hypnotherapist who understands hypnoentertainment vs hypnotherapy. A sensible approach to the issue.”” Benjamin said “within a few minutes the website had received a few hundred hits. I was pleased with that, but they just kept coming!”

Over a period of 1 hour subsequent to Keith’s retweet the website server logged over 4000 visits to the site before crashing. Benjamin continued, “I’m not sure how many people were unable to get on during the short outage we experienced, but we have quite a robust system so I imagine it could have been twice as many again!” On the topic of whether there will be more outages, Benjamin says “we have allocated more resources to the server now so we should be able to handle a big spike of traffic like that, should it happen again. Keith has continued to be very kind and generous about us so I hope we get the chance to find out when the next series starts in a few months”.

News from the Rotary Club of Sudbury April is a busy month and one of the highlights of the year for Rotarians in Sudbury because this is when we run Crucial Crew. This event sponsored by AFC Sudbury and others is held at their grounds and is designed for schoolchildren aged 9-10. It grows from strength to strength and this year we have a record number of 725 youngsters, plus their teachers, from local schools booked in. They each attend one session comprising 10 scenarios in which they are actively engaged for about 15 minutes, The purpose of Crucial Crew is fourfold: to encourage responsible action by children, to sensitize children to emergencies and dangers, to develop social awareness and care for the social environment and to understand the consequences of offending behaviour. We hope that through taking part in these activities, organised by agencies and voluntary organisations, the children gain a basic knowledge of personal safety and social awareness. In addition to the organisations who come to help, including the police, the fire brigade and Transition Sudbury amongst others, we have about over 20 volunteers, Rotarians and friends. for each morning and afternoon session to accompany the children from one activity to the next and to assist with the scenarios. We will tell you next month how it all went!

By the time you read this we will have held our Spring Gardens event, held to support our international charity the Home of Hope in Lebanon featuring sixteen gardens of all shapes and sizes across Sudbury and with opportunities to buy plants, bric-a-brac, cream teas, quiche and wine at selected locations We were busy last month too! A damp and cold morning in late March saw members of both the Rotary clubs of Sudbury collecting outside the Town Hall and Waitrose to raise money for the Vanuatu cyclone disaster. A sympathetic public dug deep into their pockets and nearly £650 was raised. We hope to add to these proceeds to provide sufficient cash to purchase one or more Shelter Boxes – just the sort of help Rotary is in a position to provide and particularly relevant, given the wholesale destruction of homes that has taken place on the other side of the world. We would like to thank Waitrose for allowing us to collect from shoppers using their store, the licensing department of Babergh District Council for acting so swiftly in granting us permission to collect in the street and, of course, those members of the public that gave so generously to this most worthy cause.

The Rotary Club of Sudbury has recently won a couple of awards. The Club’s Environment team were delighted to receive a Silver Award in recognition of their efforts over recent months to encourage local schools to take part in an environment programme the club has created. The schools’ programme is designed to encourage children aged around 10 years old to be actively involved with the rich and diverse habitat in and around Sudbury. By so doing, it is hoped that youngsters will be envisioned to take on the mantle as future custodians, as well as to enable a better understanding about the importance of safeguarding nature. Visits are being organised in conjunction with Suffolk Wildlife Trust, the River Stour Trust, Sudbury Commonlands and Hill Farm; transport is being provided by Go Start buses and the Rotary Club are indebted to some of the local councillors who have helped make this possible.

The programme is ongoing and it is hoped that more schools and more environmental groups will be involved in future years so that it becomes an established and recognised activity for local schools in the area, and perhaps more widely in the region and beyond.

Rotary is organised into districts across the country and indeed, being international, across the whole world., and we are part of a district which covers most of East Anglia. We were pleased to received a “Membership Development and Extension Award” from Rotary International for achieving the highest retention rate of members in the district in this past year, and we were pleased to welcome new individual and corporate members as part of this initiative.

Talking of awards, we recently presented Laurie Reynolds who joined us in 1991 having been a Rotarian since 1984, with the Frank Harris Award for long service. Having been a founder member of the Burnham Beeches club he joined our club when he retired to Sudbury in 1991.

Being Millennium President in 1999/2000 he saw the culmination of a year’s work with the Chartering of the Talbot club. For many years he was our Club Secretary and our representative to District Council. Outside Rotary, Laurie has given many years of service to the community being active and taking responsibilities at All Saints Church,

Gainsborough House, Christopher Centre and Friends of St Peters. Laurie is always at the front when it comes to street collections, Santa’s Grotto and other club events, and all this he does with his customary kindly courtesy. Our picture shows him receiving his award – to his complete surprise! – from President John Gardner At the end of the month we held “Charter Night” – a annual celebration of the founding of the club back in 1950 and this year Charlie Haylock, author of several books on local dialect, delighted us with his knowledge not only of Suffolk ways of talking but also of many dialects across the whole of the British Isles Amongst recent speakers at Rotary have been Regis Crepy from the Great House Lavenham entitled “Commerical enterprise meets charity need” where he described the tremendous work they have done over many years raising funds for charities whilst at the same time serving their many satisfied guests with such delicious food He also regaled us with the perils of, as a Frenchman, trying to get to grips with the English language and its idiosyncracies. He gave many examples, including “you can turn a light on, or off, or out, but not in” and “there are midwives in the NHS but no midhusbands”. Future speakers include Patricia Blair, Waitrose talking to us about Corporate Social Responsibility, a talk on Stroke Awareness, Red House - Anthony Arbuthnot, updating us about Red House, an update on work at the Thomas Gainsborough School from their Head Teacher and the team from Delphi who worked with us to provide Zachary's Garden. Then in June, we will be holding our annual Prom Concert once again with Sudbury Symphony Orchestra. If you want to know more about our events and activities why not contact us. It is distressing to see such a high loss of human life in these recent weeks. The UN says that 23,500 migrants have already sailed to Italy this year looking for a new life.

In some ways what is happening on the North Africa-Italy route can seem like a million miles from the safety and comfort of South Suffolk, but I am betting my old socks that immigration is something most people will have a view on.

It is heart-breaking to hear of the recent loss of 700 migrants on board the 20m long boat. (Only 28 survivors were rescued.) Up to 1,500 migrants are now feared to have drowned this year alone and sadly that number will rise. Fear and desperation do funny things to us. I wonder if we were faced with the similar problems of daily violence or economic hardship in Africa and the Middle East what we might be tempted to do, left our own devices.

In another story, The Times reported how a rubber dinghy carrying about 100 Africans migrants had started to deflate. A young Nigerian Christian started praying for his life but the Muslims on board insisted that he stopped, saying, â&#x20AC;&#x153;here we only pray to Allahâ&#x20AC;? His refusal led to a desperate fight, which left 12 Christians drowned after they were thrown overboard by their fellow Muslim refugees. How difficult it must be to forgive such aggression. For a country like ours which values freedom of choice, it rubs against everything that we hold dear.

At this time of the General Election, we have the privilege to vote for a new government. It is one of the things I most love about our country. When I come to put my cross on the ballot paper I am not just voting out of self-interest, but in the interests of others too. I hope that my mark will affect the quality of life for my family, neighbours and colleagues. For me not to vote would seem like a waste of an opportunity to celebrate our freedom of choice.

I owe my inspiration from the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan, which provides a timely reminder on why we should show kindness to strangers, regardless of our social and ethnic differences - however hard it can be when not reciprocated. In the story the Samaritan, part of a community despised by the Jews, spends his own money to look after a beaten up Jewish man found on the roadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wayside. Eventually he is returned to full health. Helping a fellow human being with no personal gain is a tough principle to live by in any age, but it seems even more tested with the current mass migration of people groups across the world. However, the story of The Good Samaritan remains a political, social and moral parable for our times which rightly continues to challenge us to the core. How we welcome the broken, the troubled, the unwanted and the unlovable to live our community matters - not least to God, the creator of life. When Jesus was asked by a legal expert what he must do to inherit eternal life he got the reply: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mindâ&#x20AC;?; and, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Love your neighbour as yourselfâ&#x20AC;Śdo this and you will live.â&#x20AC;?

And for that reason Jesus gets my vote. In him, a picture of true humanity is revealed through his demonstration of perfect love for others.

Why showing kindness gets my vote

On Saturday 21st March at Nayland Village Hall, a Race Night was held to raise funds for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;WomenVCancer Cycle Africa 2015 Challengeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

The event was well supported and greatly enjoyed by eighty people and a tasty fish and chip supper was cooked on site by â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Smallfryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; a mobile business from Bungay, which was followed by delicious ice-creams from Aldeburgh. Gill Dutton would like to thank everyone who supported the event, purchased and named horses and the six businesses who kindly sponsored a race each: Hadleigh Kitchens, The Travel Stop, and The Kings Head, Beaumont, Seymour Accountants, HSJ Dental, Colchester, and Mike Hatton of BFP Wealth Management of Sudbury.

She would also like to thank Keith Avis Printers who printed and donated stunning Race Cards! A dozen businesses generously donated superb prizes for the prize draw and each winning horse owner was presented with a bottle of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Bubblyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. “I just want my England back!”

So come May 7th we can enjoy our democratic right to vote.

However, whichever odious shower is elected it will make absolutely no difference to my existence. Recently I watched a brilliant conspiracy film called “The Whistleblower” starring Michael Caine. He portrays a simple self employed Englishman who discovers that our society is totally governed by an all powerful executive, completely self serving with no regard to the rule of law which they manipulate to their own ends. This is the state of our country today. Should you doubt it just ask yourself why have we spent £millions on a phone hacking enquiry which although proving corruption and much sorrow to the victims, caused no deaths or physical abuse.

Compare this with the complete lack of urgency or action regarding the proposed enquiry into systematic child abuse by the establishment. Despite even our compliant police force urging prosecution of Labour Peer Lord Janner the CPS refused and now of course his dementia is so advanced severe court action is unlikely. Cyril Smith was known to all for his activities with children, but again answered to his maker and never to those he abused. And so on, at least Jimmy Saville looked the part. So do we bring these creatures to boot, no, we further reward them (to ensure their compliance and silence) with even higher honours and offices in our establishment. Just go to Wikipedia and study the career of Paul Flowers who was given the once honourable Cooperative bank (with virtually no financial experience) to go bust to the tune of £700 million.

In the film, when accused of being anti-establishment, Caine said those moving words “No, I only want my England back”. Whether our society was ever totally just and incorrupt I doubt (at least Cromwell did try) but surely the ideal is something we should all attain to. However I doubt if after May 7th much will change. The same endless debates over Europe and the economy.

The same under financed armed forces with more Generals and Admirals than Regiments and Ships. The same deals with minority parties to hold on to power. But any hope for those in our society who seek but justice and truth, from abused kids and secret family courts, victims of health trust scandals, and the general misgovernance of our state and its institutions, don’t hold your breath!

However, lets look nearer home, Suffolk. Now, as the national press inform us, a property hotspot with Sudbury at its most attractive and opulent. So we now have an election and hopefully politicians who will live up to the billing.

Just some action would be nice. Every January our local papers portray the great and the good promising new development to improve our town. A cinema is pledged, renewal of the Hamilton Road bus park and wildlife preserve, and long overdue amendments to the local business rates which at present ensures that only charity shops can occupy our town centre. The ever worsening traffic congestion and no further planning for a by-pass. But we are promised up to 3,000 new homes with complete lack of infrastructure to service them. If nothing else let us at least pray for a completely new Babergh planning committee, then maybe common sense and some sense of urgency may prevail! Sorry for the lack of the usual humour but I have now declared the homestead an election free zone and will retire to the usual Guinness and leave the soap box until after the result.

Traction ’15 - A Hundred Years of Tractors On Sunday 10th May, the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket will be hosting TRACTION’15 - a hundred years of tractors. This event will draw together a range of tractors, including examples seen at work in the fields of Suffolk during the last 100 years. Vehicles on display will include the Museum’s Burrell Ploughing engines, some of the earliest surviving engines to come out of the factory at Thetford, Norfolk, as well as a working steam tractor and early petrol tractors that take us through both World Wars and into the days after WW2 when every farm moved from horse to tractors.

Barry Salmon, Steam and Grease Team volunteer at the museum says “We have many local supporters who have wonderful collections of tractors. This will be a unique and fascinating event that shows how tractors have changed over the last 100 years.” There will be demonstrations of different aspects of tractor development, including cultivation activities in one of the Museums demonstration fields. We will also be offering the chance to win a ride in the ‘jump seat’ of a modern 250 horsepower Case while it struggles through the heavy clay lands of the Museum site! Traction ‘15 coincides with National Mills Weekend, so the Alton Watermill at the Museum will be in action with demonstrations of corn sacks being lifted to the top of the mill using just water power. Jed Seeley Bags Nine Trophies Jed Seeley, who broke the course record for adults at Newton Green Golf Club during the year, bagged an armful of prizes at the annual presentation for the club's junior section. He collected nine awards, and aims to join the Professional Golfers' Association training scheme with professional Tim Cooper later in the year.

Seeley's awards included being voted junior club person of the year. His other awards included the KVR Trophy, Cooper Trophy, Junior Shield, coaching/skills Award, C List eclectric, Order of Merit and also the S Woodhead doubles knock-out with Harvey Watts. Another major award winner was James Cooper, who is following in the footsteps of his dad Tim, Newton's professional.

Other winners: Oliver Page (handicap championship and P Hawkins Salver), Ben Tatum (scratch championship), Connor and Bob Talbot (H Wordley Cup for junior-adult foursomes), Alex Iveson (four clubs trophy and A Dodds trophy), James Cooper (Bill Mills trophy, Newton salver, player of the year and most improved player), Ben Uttridge (D Salmon trophy), Kieron Heard (Arctic cup, Mary Whittle trophy and mid-week roll-up).

The presentation meeting heard that Connor Talbot would be succeeding Ellie Aldous as junior captain.

Stoke by Nayland Golf Club Peter Blewitt Trophy The traditional Easter Monday competition at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club is the Peter Blewitt Trophy.

This is an American Greensomes mixed pairs event played on the Gainsborough course with a shotgun start. There was a good entry of 22 pairs.

Sudbury Bowls Club The new outdoor season has begun for Sudbury Bowls Club on Quay Lane and on a gloriously sunny afternoon the President of the club Jacqui Edgar, put the first bowl down to signal the opening of the green. 32 players turned out for the occasion and played friendly drawn matches followed by a tea in the clubhouse.

Sudbury is well known for having one of the best greens in the county; it looks magnificent this year and is the work of the club greenkeeper Graham Rowland. All the players congratulated him for his hard work over the winter to get the lawn looking so good and playing so well. There will be an open day in May - date to be confirmed - to encourage new players to the club and let’s hope the weather will be as kind as it was for the opening of the green.
