St. George’s Celebration Weekend in Sudbury e h T Local Community News

It is hoped that local schools will encourage their pupils to enter the competitions for poetry, prose, drawing, painting and sculpture. Organisations will be encouraged to offer stalls which will help raise funds for their good cause. The theme of the competitions will, of course, be around St George and the Dragon! The Cricket Club will have their bar open and will also be offering barbeque food. It is also hoped that sports clubs in Quay Lane will be able to offer ‘taster’ sessions to encourage more young people to take part.

Further information will be circulated at Sudbury on Show on 4 March in St Peter’s and the Town Hall, but in the meantime, as places for the two events will have to be limited, voluntary and community groups and charities wishing to take part on either or both days are invited to contact Lesley Ford-Platt on lesleyfordplatt@rocketmail.com or 01787 372171 for more information.

The Sudbury Market Town Partnership has secured Big Lottery funding to go ahead with plans to ‘Celebrate England’ on the weekend of 22 and 23 April 2017 – 23 April is, of course, St George’s Day. On Saturday 22 April, there will be a Charity Roadshow and workshops from 10 to 4 pm in The Quay Theatre and The Jetty in Quay Lane. Each workshop will offer ‘10 Top Tips’ for voluntary and community organisations on topics as varied as Writing Good Funding Applications, Recruiting and Managing Volunteers, Marketing and Publicity, Managing a Group’s Finances, Advocacy Skills, Managing Effective Meetings, Smarter Working with IT, Speaking and Presentation Skills. All sessions are offered without charge. At 4 pm at the end of the Roadshow there will be a Volunteer Awards Ceremony, where it is planned to acknowledge members of the local community who volunteer within organisations. On Sunday 23 April, there will be a St George's Day celebration event, a traditional country-style fair on the Cricket Club ground, in Quay Lane, with lots of stalls from the voluntary and community sector, competitions for children, including fancy dress on the theme of St George.

The Friends of Sudbury Library

The Friends of Sudbury Library have had a successful Christmas with a popular chocolate raffle and the Staff ran a testing Quiz. The latest event was the Harry Potter Night on the 2nd February, this has become an annual event run by the Staff of the Library with a little help from Volunteers and the Friends.

This year around 60 children joined in an exciting evening of tests, trials and story telling. How good to see the Library full of excited young people with not a device in sight.

On the 18th March we are going to join the current trend and hold a “Bake Offâ€? this will be a new venture for us. All age groups are welcome, there will be two categories, children and adults with the theme ‘To make a cake relating to their favourite book’. Entry forms available at the Library ÂŁ1. Judging on the 18th March at 3pm by a local professional Pastry Chef followed by the presentation of prizes.

Following our very successful photography evening we are hoping to widen the topics of our talks, perhaps trains and gardening. We shall be holding our first AGM on the 24th May when we are delighted that Alison Wheeler (Chief Executive of the IPS) will be speaking.

This eggcellent event will take place at Whatfield Village Hall, 11-2pm on the 1st April – no it’s NOT a joke! Three weeks later we return to the Old School, Long Melford with our Spring Fair, 10-3pm on 23rd April.

Dementia friendly screening plays to sold out Quay Theatre

A dementia friendly screening of ‘An American in Paris’ at the Quay Theatre in Sudbury played to a packed audience recently with more planned. The film, starring Gene Kelly, was shown in a safe and welcoming environment, encouraging those with dementia, as well as their carers and families, to take the opportunity of attending a theatrical screening. The warm reception and capacity crowd have ensured another dementia friendly screening will be coming to the Quay in May this year. The attendees were able to watch the film in a friendly setting, with many collected and driven to the Quay by GoStart Community Transport free of charge, allowing residents of care homes from surrounding villages as far afield as Earls Colne to attend. The screening was arranged by Suffolk Cinema Network, supported by Babergh District Council. It follows similarly successful showings of March of the Penguins and Breakfast at Tiffany’s at Hadleigh Pool & Leisure last year.

Cllr Margaret Maybury, Portfolio Holder for Community Capacity Building and Engagement at Babergh District Council, said: “This is only the latest of the dementia-friendly screenings we have run with the Suffolk Cinema Network here in Babergh, and the response, both from audiences and organisations such as the Quay and GoStart, has been phenomenal. There is a real appetite for these screenings and a warm and supportive community here in Babergh to make them happen and I’m looking forward to more screenings in the year ahead.”

Quote from Suffolk Cinema Network: "We've aimed these relaxed film screenings at people who are often cut off from arts and cultural entertainment due to frailty, behavioural changes and ill health. As a society we need to ensure that those living with dementia, their carers and families are welcomed into our arts venues and cultural spaces. Film can be a gateway to the past and a great connector and we are delighted that the screenings have been so well attended."

For all the media furore concerning Donald Trump's presidency, there has to date been relatively little formal Parliamentary debate about the new occupant of the White House - but then we have had Brexit to contend with. That will change as, at the time of writing, the Commons prepares to debate whether to roll out the red carpet for Mr Trump.

The debate arises as a result of a petition signed by almost 2m people arguing that President Trump should not be granted a 'state' visit to the UK. Such debates are heavily subscribed but if I am called to speak I will argue that such a gesture would not be in our national interest.

It seems to me that foreign policy at its best consists of calm day to day diplomacy in the background, driven by clear long-term strategic thinking. It is not best suited to gesture politics and knee-jerk reactions. We may not like Donald Trump's personality. His bravado is not exactly statesmanlike and some of his utterances demean his office and the nation he represents.

Nevertheless, these are extremely delicate times in global affairs. The new US President is seemingly ambiguous about the importance of NATO, an alliance that has kept the peace for decades and avoided the extraordinary bloodshed of world war two being repeated - hitherto. And we have a need to look for strong alliances with major nations as we prepare to leave the EU. Above all, we face the threat of an unpredictable and aggressive Russia, buzzing our air space with nuclear capable Bear bombers. In my view, there is only one winner if we pull the red carpet from under Trump's feet - Vladimir Putin. The Russian leader is desperate to see a divided West and it would be all smiles in the Kremlin if the UK was to fall out with Trump in public. We should be keeping as close to the new White House administration as possible, not to endorse everything it does, but to try and influence its future policy. That is surely where our national interest lies.

So you are buying or selling your property and you have to choose a conveyancing solicitor. On first appearances it can be difficult to tell different companies apart. But there is one question you should always ask your potential choice of conveyancing solicitor… Does your service include a No Sale, No Fee Promise as standard?

What is a No Sale, No Fee Promise? A No Sale, No Fee Promise means that should your property transaction, purchaseand/ or sale, fall-through (go abortive) for whatever reason you will not pay any of the legal fees you were quoted. If your conveyancing solicitor does not provide a No Sale, No Fee Promise, you will be charged all or part of the legal fee you were originally quoted, regardless of the fact you have nothing to show for it.

An example: Here is an example of the costs you could face if your property transaction falls-through and your conveyancing solicitor does not protect you with a No Sale, No Fee Promise: Solicitors fees on first transaction = £600 +VAT (total £720) Abortive costs at exchange of contracts = £480 + VAT (total £576) Solicitors fees on second transaction = £600 +VAT (total £720) for the work on your sale TOTAL = £1080 +VAT (total £1,296) As the figures above demonstrate, it is easy to find yourself substantially out of pocket due to conveyancing fees, mortgage costs, and surveys. Which? estimate that the average amount lost by those individuals in this situation is a staggering £2,899. If you were protected by a No Sale, No Fee promise you would not pay the £576 cost associated with the first abortive transaction in the example above. All you would be charged for is any disbursements that may have been paid out to third parties, such as search fees if you were purchasing a property.

How likely is it my transaction will fall-through? Unfortunately, it might be more likely than you think. According to a survey conducted by consumer group Which? in 2016, a staggering 28% of property transactions fall-through.

What is frustrating is that if your transaction does fall-through, it is unlikely to even be your fault and is much more likely to be due to an issue with another transaction in the chain, of which yours is just one. However, those using Holmes & Hills Solicitors’ conveyancing services will be pleased to hear that clients of the firm have a much lower risk of their transaction falling-through, less than 15%.

Why do transactions fall through? As you might expect, there are a wide range of reasons for property transactions falling-through and most causes will be beyond your control. However, in the experience of the conveyancing solicitors at Holmes & Hills, the most common reasons are: • A disagreement between the seller and the buyer and this cannot be resolved.

• Either the seller or the buyer changes their mind.

• Issues raised on a survey or a valuation regarding the value or condition of the property.

• The seller or the buyer’s circumstances change due to a change of job or breakdown of a relationship.

There's no such thing as a free lunch – or is there?

For limited numbers there is!

The Sudbury Gainsborough Probus Club would like to invite people from Sudbury and surrounding areas to join us for lunch at the restaurant of Sudbury Masonic Hall on the third Wednesday of every month. If you would like to find out what we are all about then we invite you to come along and meet an interesting and diverse group of people who enjoy dining together and enjoying an interesting talk which follows. The only requirement is that you are male (women should not worry there is also a corresponding local club for ladies), you live in Sudbury or one of the surrounding villages and that you can usually make it for lunch once a month. Your first visit will be absolutely free and there is no pressure to join although we do hope you will.

So what is Probus exactly? The first Probus Club was set up in 1965 of ex Rotary members who wanted to continue to meet after retirement. Later clubs widened their catchment by including non Rotary members. Sudbury Probus was established in March 1977. Probus stands for PROfessional BUSiness but as there are no fixed rules we now have quite a liberal interpretation. We are still mainly retired as we meet for lunch every 3rd Wednesday of the month but as nowadays retirement can be a gradual process and anyone who can make the lunch would be welcome, including those who work from home or have voluntary jobs as many of us have. Also nowadays most of us would consider ourselves to be ‘professional’ whatever our job may have been.

Also we are not restrictive to the parish boundaries if you live nearby you would be very welcome to come along. So now we call ourselves Sudbury Gainsborough Probus Club as we have recently merged the two local mens Probus Clubs.

If you take up our offer you may well find there are people who you know are members so you won’t feel out of place. Although most of us are of retirement age we think we are still young at heart so it is a chance to meet people from a lot of different backgrounds and some very interesting careers and you will find you have some great conversations and maybe even share some experiences from your past. You would probably be surprised what you can pick up from talking to us and from the talks that we have. Our dress rules are usually “ jacket and tie “, so just come smartly dressed and that will be fine.

We are really trying to make sure we do not merit a ‘stuffy’ image. Our members have worked in a very large variety of jobs but we also have lots of other interests which we are more than happy to talk about and share. It’s such a great way to meet interesting people and you may well find someone who shares your interests and can help you develop them or find others who share the same passion. As far as the lunches go we get a very good meal provided each month at a reasonable cost with the added attraction of an interesting speaker. Some months we have a talk on a subject after the meal for 30 to 40 minutes. The talks are very varied and cover a wide range of subjects and have recently included Trinity House, The Battle of Agincourt, Josephine Baker, and The Battle of Waterloo, all given by experts in the subject. It does not end there as we also have outings to places of interest to which partners/wives are also invited and again there is a very varied programme including theatre visits and most recently a great luncheon trip to Jewish London and an outing to the Thursford Christmas Spectacular which were really enjoyable.

Last summer we spent five days in North Yorkshire and in 2017 Summer we will visit the Cotswolds.

So if you if you are free on the Third Wednesday of the month and are interested why don’t you give Probus a try come along for a nice lunch, an interesting talk and stimulating conversation? More funding for St George’s Celebration Weekend in Sudbury

Work is well underway for a St George’s weekend of celebration in Sudbury on April 22nd and 23rd. A grant of over £7,000 from the Big Lottery Fund to the Sudbury Market Town Partnership has been augmented by recent donations of £500 from County Cllr John Sayers to help with the costs of awards and prizes, and £870 from County Cllr Colin Spence, to cover the cost of marquee hire, using SCC Locality Grant funding.

Waitrose is also generously supporting the event.

The programme for the free Charity Roadshow on Saturday April 22 has Lesley Ford Platt receiving a been published and voluntary and SCC Locality Grant from community organisations are invited to County Cllr John Sayers book up for any (or all!) of the eight ‘Ten Top Tips’ workshop sessions on offer. The Roadshow will be split between the Quay Theatre and the Jetty in Quay Lane, Sudbury.

Nominations are already being received for Volunteer Awards, designed to acknowledge members of the local community who volunteer within organisations. The Awards Ceremony will take place at 4.00 p.m. on Saturday April 22 in the Quay Theatre and will be a ticket only event. Three finalists in each category will be invited to attend, along with their nominators, with the winners being announced during the event.

The programme of entertainment for the St George's Day Country Fair at Sudbury Cricket Ground, on Sunday April 23, is now arranged, and will include a Children’s Entertainer offering Punch and Judy, a magic show, circus skills, balloon modelling, and face painting; the Gymnastics Team from Pot Kiln School, Sudbury Phoenix Community Marchers, and Ben the Busker. The children’s fancy dress parade will be judged during the morning. Details of competitions for primary school children have been sent to local schools and it is hoped there will be many entries for the five different categories: poetry, short stories, paintings, drawings and sculpture – all on the theme of St George and the dragon. Sports “taster’ sessions will be on offer for cricket, hockey, tennis and bowls and there will also be a Beat the Street Competition.

Look out for the chance to be photographed as St George, with his spear and the dragon, at a number of places during March!

“Dance With Us” in association with The Delphi Tea Dance are bringing “Swing Machine” a 17 piece big band who play at venues across East Anglia to The Delphi Centre Sudbury to play at our Mid-Summer Big Band Dance on Saturday 24th June 2017, commencing at 7.30pm. With their 1930’s, 1940’s & 1950’s sound for Swing, Ballroom and Latin music this is a night not to be missed. The Delphi Centre has been through difficult times over the last few years, but with interest in all forms of dancing becoming popular again especially all things vintage, a number of events are being organised by different groups. The Swing Machine will play classics from Glenn Miller, Stan Getz, Ella Fitzgerald, Ted Heath and songs from Frank Sinatra and other big names. The dancing will be great on the Delphi’s large sprung dance floor.

The 24th June is also Armed Forces Day so to have this great band playing the tunes and songs of the 1940’s era will be very appropriate.

This is a charity event for UPBEAT – Heart Support in West Suffolk, they do a fantastic job supporting patients who have had major heart surgery. They receive no major funding and rely on donations and fund raising events. There will be a licenced bar at competitive prices, and you may bring your own nibbles. The dance will be themed to the 1940’s which we hope many dancers will come dressed to the era.

A number of fundraising events are being planned to raise money for a

growing campaign to encourage people talk about their problems. The Just Talk campaign was recently launched by leading psychotherapist Glenda Roberts following the suicides of two of her children’s close friends.

As part of the campaign free monthly drop-in session are being offered to allow people to discuss any problems they may have in confidence without needing to book an appointment. Ms Robert says a number of fundraising possibilities are currently being discussed and would love to hear from anyone looking for a cause to support.

“We need to raise funds so that we can keep expanding the campaign and reach out to more people who may be suffering alone and feel there is no way out of their problem. This whole campaign is about preventing people from falling into depression and in worst case scenarios committing suicide. Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa launched their “Employee of the Year Award” scheme this year and announced the winner at the annual staff Christmas party at the hotel last week.

The very first Employee of the Year Award was presented to one of the Housekeeping and Public Area Cleaning team at Susanna Rendall MD with (l to r) Chris Carter, the hotel, Pannee Pannee Woodhatch and Craig Dixey Woodhatch by Susanna on the restaurant terrace at Stoke by Rendall, Managing Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa Director of the family owned resort. In 1939 a six year old boy found himself in England as part of the famed Kinder Transport when hundreds of children were saved from the death camps by Sir Nicholas Winton. The lad was to become Alf Dods MP, now a campaigning peer, who obtained the agreement of the government to give sanctuary to up to a thousand children from the Calais camps. This honourable man had not forgotten his own rescue by the people of Britain and sought to emulate his saviour Nichols Winton. However, surprise, surprise, the government reneged on their promise and the children were left to suffer the dangers of the awful camps. “Not our problem” I hear some say. Well it is, we are as responsible as the rest of NATO and Europe by supporting with arms and training the various factions that have destroyed cities and homes across the Middle East. By attempting to install Western democratic values on societies governed by despots the innocents of Aleppo, Afghanistan, Iraq and countless other territories have been displaced and suffer in their millions. To her credit Heidi Allen, Tory MP for South Cambridgeshire, has valiantly put aside party politics (and possibly her own career) to support Alf Dods and give a few kids a haven from the jungle that Western policies helped to foster.

Just occasionally the odd politician like Dods and Allen prove there is a smattering of honour in the reptile house, such a shame they are just a small minority!

The luvvies are still vocally giving President Trump’s proposed visit to our fair land much opposition. I am no adherent of that strange beast myself but find it ironic that the same luvvies were somewhat less vocal in opposition when Ceausescu, Mugabe, Amin, McGuiness and countless Arab despots were given the honour of a state visit. Every single one with the blood of innocents on their hands but where where were the opposing petitions with over a million signatures? Some people can be very selective. I don’t remember Trump throwing opponents into death camps, blowing up our cities, stealing farms to give to his cronies or torturing his own people. The man is the elected leader of our greatest ally and should be shown due courtesy as such. The fellow, being a teetotaller, is probably not worthy of trust and requires some watching, but then, the likes of us will not have to dine with him, although his wife would be forever welcome in the famed Institute Club!

In recent years we have seen the building of many fine hospitals, schools and public works. With increased taxation and a decline in policing and other public services we thought our taxes wisely spent. Well, it wasn’t on those fine new buildings. The majority were erected under a little publicised initiative known as PFI. Some £222 billion was invested into civic works by the chums of successive Labour and Tory governments. In fact we are now indebted to these companies to the tune of £3,400 for every man, woman and child in Britain, and we weren’t even consulted! The famed Barts Hospital alone is in debt to the tune of £93 million and the original PFI debt of £1.1 billion will entail repayments of £7 bn. The appended service costs are equally penal. The hospital porter can no longer change a light bulb, the new regime can charge in the region of £125 for that exercise. And this is happening right across Britain. So where did our increased taxation go and who profited? Well, next time you hear a politician quote the magic words “commercially confidential sensitive information” question the secrecy imposed. Public services have declined, publicly owned sites have been sold to the highest bidder (we hope!) and the money squandered whilst £billions have been borrowed under the discredited Private Finance Initiative. As an example just look at Sudbury’s late two hospitals. It would be interesting to discover how many of our public spirited politicians now sit on the boards of the companies involved.

Usually I find our local politicians provide copy enough for a dozen columns but the temporary shelving of the Sudbury Steering Group and the end of the Pantomime Season gives one a respite. However it should be noted by the long suffering electorate that the unification of Babergh and Mid Suffolk Councils is about to be forced on us despite the decision of local ratepayers to vote against the scheme, so much for local democracy. In 2011 some 60.9% of the people of Babergh voted against the merger. Tory Councillor Jennie Jenkins stated “The people have spoken”, so why ignore the electorate Jennie? Don’t worry dear, they will have forgotten.

At the time of writing we are busy preparing for Crucial Crew which is being held this year in the week beginning 20 March.

Crucial Crew started seventeen years ago as a way of helping young children aged between 9 and 11 to understand the dangers of everyday life. During a morning or an afternoon session, they participate in a series of scenarios that show them how to be safe in a variety of situations. We look forward to welcoming over 700 children from local primary schools.

You may remember that at Christmas we organised a Tree of Memories which gave friends and relatives the opportunity to post messages in memory of their loved ones.

At the start of morning service at St Gregory’s on Sunday 12 February, Canon Cheryl Collins held a short service of Blessing for the 250 messages which had been posted this year.

We are planning to have three international projects in 2017-18, including continuing of current project sponsoring a young boy at East Meru Community School in Tanzania.

We hope to sponsor a second child – a girl, and working with a local group and with the Rotary Club in Bamako, Mali to support street children to attend key skills training programmes. We also plan to begin a new project to help the hospital in Sarenga, West Bengal which we sponsored a few years ago.

Some of you may have seen our stand at Sudbury on Show; this year we launched a new leaflet describing our range of activities, and copies of this will be available at the Tourist Office in the Library. If you like supporting good causes - locally and internationally - and having some fun at the same time why not consider Rotary. If you are interested in becoming a member why not come along to one of our lunchtime meetings to see what we are like.

A prominent Suffolk rugby club is launching a drive to make its state-of-the-art clubhouse a thriving community facility

Sudbury Rugby Club wants to promote the range of facilities available at its clubhouse. The facility is the centre piece of its £1.5m Whittome Field ground, opened in 2010 by rugby legend Jason Leonard OBE. Facilities at the site include a modern function suite which can seat up to 100 people and is used for celebrations, VIP events, dinners and conferences. The club The club’s main function suite ready also has a spacious bar and café for a premier event area which is available for public use. There is also a fully equipped gym featuring a range of free weights and cardiovascular equipment.

Club chairman Bob Waller said: “Since moving to the Whittome Field site in 2010 the club has made huge strides forward from a sporting perspective.

However, a key part of our business plan is to create a significant revenue stream from the clubhouse and we need to encourage more people and local groups to take advantage of the fantastic facilities we have here.

“For example we would like to attract people living around the club to come down and enjoy a beer or a coffee in our bar area and maybe watch the sport on our giant screen.

Local mothers could use the café to meet for a coffee whilst the kids can A recent Christmas function play in the adjoining park area. at the clubhouse “Our function suite is available for hire for all occasions and we have parking for up to 70 vehicles. We would like to invite local clubs to make the clubhouse their home, for instance the local table tennis club has recently relocated here. “Our aim is to make the clubhouse a popular, friendly and well used community facility used by local groups, individuals and businesses.”

New Life Church, Gt. Cornard launches ‘Abi’s Footprints’ to help Sudbury families

‘Abi’s Footprints’ is a new community initiative set up by New Life Church. It supports mothers and families in the Sudbury area, struggling in difficult circumstances to meet the additional practical needs of a new baby or young infant up to age 3. The scheme provides a gift such as a Moses Basket filled with basic essentials, a bundle of clothing or bedding, or maybe a larger item such as a cot or buggy. It offers support at a point of real need, and a message of hope for a better tomorrow.

As well as the enthusiastic support of New Life Church, we have strong links with relevant community organisations, professional teams and the Ipswich Building Society. Through their invaluable help and advice we now have the vital involvement of key people in passing appropriate requests on to us, as well as two storage spaces in Cornard and four Collection Points for donations in Sudbury and Cornard. We now require good second-hand (or new) baby items. A list of these, together with details of the Collection Points, can be found on our website www.abisfootprints.co.uk or on our Facebook page/abisfootprints. Leaflets can also be picked up at the Ipswich Building Society on Market Hill or at the Phoenix and Cornfields Children’s Centers.

Abi’s Footprints is not just about giving. It’s about helping to build a stronger community through working together. We invite anyone to contribute their goods, time, skills and talents. Likewise anyone can benefit by having a need met or from the satisfaction of helping to meet a need.

We welcome volunteers to help collect or sort the donations and to check and maintain the equipment. Our next ‘sorting session’ is at 9.30am on Monday 6th March at the Stevenson Centre in Cornard.

Stoke by Nayland Golf Club has launched a new initiative this year to encourage aspiring golfers of any age to get into the game of golf - and to ensure that they’ll have fun whilst they learn! Suffolk Minds Matter: Suffolk Annual Public Health Report 2016 will be presented to the Health and Wellbeing Board at today’s meeting, proposing recommendations for long-term improvement to mental health in Suffolk. An estimated 1 in 100 people are affected by severe mental ill health in Suffolk and around half of lifelong mental ill health conditions develop before the age of 14.

In the same month that the Prime Minister outlined government commitments to better mental healthcare for young people and the wider population, this new report sets a Suffolk-wide aspiration for improved mental health at all ages. The independent report, which has been produced in collaboration with a range of partners, lists seven cross-cutting recommendations to promote good mental health and reduce demand in Suffolk over the next five to 10 years. The report is divided into sections that correspond with different stages in people’s lives, from pre-birth children to older people’s mental health. It recognises that good mental health is a fundamental human right for everyone and that good mental health is essential for good physical health, and vice versa.

Suffolk's youngest children have greater online access than ever before This year’s annual cyber survey results show that 83% of 10-11 year olds in Suffolk now have access to either a smartphone or tablet. This represents a 14% increase in smartphone ownership, however only 58% of ten year olds asked in the survey said they had been taught to stay safe online by a parent or carer. Despite the rising number of young people with internet access, Suffolk is bucking national trends in terms of risk-taking behaviour.

There has been a three year downward trend in nearly all forms of online risk taking behaviour across all ages in the county. The survey, which gathered over 3,000 responses from children and young people in Suffolk, found that the number of young people who feel confident in avoiding risky situations online increases with age. This correlates as the group who will have been exposed to the most e-safety education and advice throughout their lifetimes.

The group who encountered the most risky situations online were those who had not received any online safety education either at home or in school.

The responses from children and young people show that online safety education and advice is making a real difference in Suffolk. However there is more to be done. The numbers of parents teaching their children about online safety has remained constant at just over 60%. It is vital that parents and carers continue to provide online safety advice to young people in Suffolk.

This year’s results continue to reflect a link between emotional health and online behaviour, a trend first picked up in 2014’s cyber survey and backed up by national research. Feelings of depression can double the risk of engaging in harmful behaviour online.

The results were released to coincide with National Safer Internet Day. This year’s theme is 'Be the change: Unite for a better internet.’

Celebrating 50 years in situ for Bulmer St Andrew’s Primary School

It was such a happy place to work, filled Sunday 19 March 2017 with learning, fun and laughter.” Mrs Brett also reminisced about how she still 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. sees some of her students, many of whom have gone on to have successful careers.

A New Dawn for Sudbury Golf

A new partnership has been formed to bring the joys of golf to all age groups in the Sudbury area.

The area’s longest established club and a neighbouring, family-run driving range are pooling their resources in a bid to give the sport a new dawn. Since recently bringing the range and its nine hole course back under family At Old Joe’s - Newton manager Ben Tawell, control, Josie and Fred Fred and Josie Stow, and Peter Philpott Stow have transformed Old Joe’s. They have also struck up a partnership with Newton Green Golf Club, which will see the organisations move forward as part of the national campaign to bring the benefits of golf to a wider audience.

Newton’s PGA advanced coach Tim Cooper is running nationally-backed Get Into Golf courses at the range. His club shop assistant Jed Seeley, who plays off scratch, is leading marketing and business development at Old Joe’s on a part-time basis. Peter Philpott, Newton chairman, said: “We have long held the opinion that with greater liaison the club and range could both move forward in a positive way, but this has not happened in recent years. We now have a very positive tie up which can only be good for golf and anyone interested in the sport in the Sudbury area.

“Newton has made major strides in recent times, and golf can only blossom further if the town’s two leading providers are working in harmony. There was a close tie up when farmer Robert Fison developed the range more than 20 years ago, and now the spirit of co-operation has been rekindled. “In recent times the sport has taken a deep look at itself, and user friendly policies that Newton has been fostering, such as nine-hole, pay and play, are now very much in vogue. They complement what a place such as Old Joe’s has to offer.”

Josie Stow, the daughter of Mr Fison, has recently resettled in the area with her South African husband Fred, and the pair has been breathing new life into the driving range.

Fred commented: “Old Joe’s is loved by the community and has been a feature for over 25 years, with many top local golfers having cut their teeth here. We want to remain rooted in the community with people feeling a sense of belonging. “It remains a friendly place for a novice to get into golf, and for a seasoned player to perfect their game. We now have the addition of a ninehole foot-golf course to add to the atmosphere of healthy, family, relaxed entertainment.”

Wholesome hot lunch deliveries

The Bridge Project has expanded its hot meals delivery service to offer home cooked lunches to more people across Suffolk. The charity, which has a café in Gainsborough Street, Sudbury, has delivered hot meals to the town’s residents for many years.

Customers include those who are recovering from illness, injury or surgery or people who may not be Kyle Ellis, Boyd Robinson, Robert Elmer able to cook themselves a and Necolle Girling of The Bridge Project nutritious hot meal.

The service has now expanded to include Long Melford, Acton and Great Waldingfield. Meals will be delivered in a van whose new design will be easily spotted in the area. Jo Searle, Chief Executive of The Bridge Project, said: “Our existing customers look forward to their deliveries and it’s wonderful that we can now cater to more residents who may not be able to have access to regular hot meals.”

The Bridge Project is always looking out for helpful volunteers to support the running of the charity and to deliver the meals. The meal delivery service operates Monday to Friday, excluding Bank Holidays. The service is designed to be customer focused and flexible; food can be ordered as often or as little as the customer would like it, with on the day deliveries being taken up to 10.30am the same morning.

Two teams from Cornard Dynamos Disability Football Team have qualified for the second round of the FA People’s Cup after success at a tournament in Ipswich. The teams will now represent Suffolk in the national five-a-side competition in March. The news comes after two local companies recently donated money to buy the team a new kit. Sudbury-based caravan and motor home manufacturer Adria and the East of England Co-Op both donated £300 to the team.

In addition, the Sudbury Charity Dart League has donated a further £250 while the local branch of building society Nationwide held a coin collection for the team. These funds will go towards buying more kit, and to pay for hall hire and transport to tournaments. Manager Will Hunt said: "On behalf of all the players I'd like to thank our supporters for their donations to the football club, which mean so much to the players. This club is an opportunity to get some exercise, have fun and socialise and means so much to the boys. The new kits look great." Will said the team is on the look-out for any new players who would like to get involved. The team has 40 registered players with around 15 regularly turning out for training every Saturday. The team welcomes players of all ages from children and teenagers to adults.

The team is typically sub-divided into three groupings for tournaments depending on the severity of players' disability and their ability on the pitch.

One group is made up of players with mild conditions such as dyslexia and dyspraxia, which affects co-ordination, while a second group takes in people with more advanced physical and mental conditions. A third group includes players with Downs Syndrome and other severe learning disabilities.

All the coaches who work with the disability teams are trained and CRB checked. The team receives funding from the Suffolk Foundation which helps with costs.

Training takes place between 12pm and 2pm every Saturday - inside at Cornard Sports Centre in the winter and outside at Blackhouse Lane in Cornard during the better weather.

Assistant manager Amanda Plumb added: "We're a friendly group who enjoy getting together and playing football. We've got an exciting season coming up 14/3/13 09:14 Page more 1 so need a few players to bolster our teams.
