Despite the weather, February is the most romantic of months. Make the most of a romantic date in Sudbury whether it’s shopping, having a meal, going to an exhibition or the theatre.

Gainsborough’s House has their current exhibition of Samuel William Fores, Satirist: Caricatures from the Reform Club exhibition which is on until the 22nd February. Regular events in St Peter’s include Craft Fairs, Sudbury Symphony Orchestra, Kettle and Fish café every Thursday and the Farmers’ Market on the last Friday of the month.

The Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts which is competitive festival open to people of all ages commences a month of events with Dance from the 14 to 18 February at Ormiston Sudbury Academy. There are also non-competitive classes and with a wide range of classes there is something to suit everyone at this friendly, professionally adjudicated festival.

Sudbury mayor supports glaucoma education event Sudbury mayor Robert Spivey was one of more than 50 people to take up an offer of free ‘puff’ checks during a two-day glaucoma awareness raising event organised by an international eye care charity. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness and effects more than 600,000 people in the UK. However, it is estimated half the people with the condition go undiagnosed and untreated. The condition primarily affects people over the age of 40 and its prevalence is increasing in line with an ever-ageing population. Glaucoma is particularly dangerous as it affects vision in a gradual way and once the damage is done it cannot be reversed.

Early diagnosis of glaucoma can add 12 or more years of good sight with the necessary treatment and with this in mind eye care charity Lions International arranged for free pressure checks to be offered in Sudbury as part of a far reaching awareness campaign, already carried in other parts of Suffolk, including Ipswich and Beccles. The checks were carried out by opticians Wardale Williams, which has a practice in the town. The event was held in the foyer of Barclays Bank on Market Hill on Thursday, 15 January and Friday, 16 January at the Wardale Williams practice.

One indicator of the sight threatening condition is increased pressure within the eye, which can be measured using a simple painless 'puff of air' test. The checks were undertaken with a sophisticated, mobile test kit called an Intellipuff. The Intellipuff is held up to a patient’s eye and after a gentle, painless puff the optometrist can see if the pressure inside the eye is higher than expected.

Jo Williams, Senior Optometrist at Wardale Williams, said: “Increased pressure can damage the retina, the light sensitive tissue inside the eye, causing a gradual loss of vision and eventual blindness. The condition is rarely painful; therefore the only real way of checking is to have a regular comprehensive eye examination by a qualified optometrist. We would like to thank the Lions and the mayor for supporting us in this very important event.�

Sudbury Mayor’s Report Hello everyone, Well I guess everyone is now getting back to reality after the busyness of December. Certainly for us it was very busy all the way up to Christmas day. Then it went very quiet as people quite rightly forgot about Councils and Mayors and got on with their own celebrations. I must say though that now it’s starting to pick up again.

The first event of this Christmas was attending and hosting the Town Council’s annual Christmas party for the elderly. Earlier in the year Council won a regional award in part because of the way it tries to support and involve elderly people. This type of event was one of the reasons that we were given the award. The party was held at the Delphi and was a buffet lunch and entertainment for about 150 pensioners. Judging from the comments received both during and after the party this event was very successful and the Council would certainly wish to continue this tradition.

The next day Hilary and I attended the annual Suffolk County Council carol service held at Endeavour House in Ipswich. There were many Councillors and Mayors from all over the county to listen to thoughtful readings and stirring carols sung by the Council choir.

On the 13th December we attended a Christmas party at the Catchpole Court care home. The home caters for residents both with and without dementia but the staff work very hard to make sure that everyone is included. There were two singing acts to entertain both patients and their guests along with lunch and a raffle with a lot of prizes!

On the 15th December I awarded the prizes for the best dressed Christmas window. This was run through the Sudbury Mercury and readers were invited to vote for their favourite window display. There were over 20 displays submitted by local shop owners but as usual this was whittled down to 3 awardees from the voting. I was also allowed to award a prize – the Mayors’ special award to a display that especially caught my eye. The winner of the prize was Jacqui’s Café at the end of North Street – they are getting rather good at this as they also won the award at Carnival time; the runner up was Nanook’s in Friars Street whose display was designed by the students of the Thomas Gainsborough School; third place went to the Oxfam shop at the top of Friars Street. North Street This was a Christmas toy themed display on which a lot of care and attention had been given. Anyway, congratulation to all entrants, with prize or not! As a follow for the Best Dressed window award there was also the prize draw for a hamper to one of the voters who took part in the window dressing vote. The winner was Sue Smith and in her absence I presented the prize to her mother Joan Smith.

On the 18th we attended the Red House care home Christmas Lunch. Carol and her team always make everyone welcome and along with the traditional Christmas lunch there was a concert of Joan Snith receives a carols given by the children of St christmas hamper Gregory’s school. from the Mayor On the 20th December we, along with many others, went along for the tour of the new medical centre on Churchfield Road. The building is designed to take many of the services that used to take place at St Leonards and Walnuttree hospital. All services from the Siam surgery have also moved there as have a number of community services. This building is a big achievement and has been a long time coming.

Congratulations though to all those involved in the design and development of this fine facility.

On the 21st December there were two events to attend. The first was Sudbury Choral Society’s Annual Christmas Concert. The theme for the concert this year was the truce in the trenches at Christmas in 1914. There was a lot of fine singing and acting as members of the choir performed imagined scenes depicting the truce. A very well presented tribute. In the evening Hilary and I went along the Annual Christmas Carol Service at St Gregory’s church. The church was absolutely packed with standing room only. Rev Gregory Webb and his team presented a very fine service. At this point there were a couple of days break before the final dash on Christmas Day. The first event on Christmas Day was present clothing vouchers to qualifying recipients on behalf of the Sudbury Municipal Charities. This has been an annual event for the past 346 years. When it started the awardees were given a coat but with the ravishes of inflation this is now a £20 voucher. When I attended this ceremony last year as deputy mayor a report of the ceremony of the event from 2013 was read out with all the details of awards and awardees – it was very evocative.

The next two events on Christmas Day were visits to Hazell Court Care Home and Catchpole Court Care Home. Hilary and I were very happy to meet residents and their relatives to give Christmas greetings. It’s at times like this you can see the importance of having a Mayor and them being seen.

And then it was quiet for 10 days! It wasn’t until the 11th January that we attended our first event of 2015. It was a Plough service at St Mary’s church in Stowmarket. The service was led by Reverend Michael Eden who was both serious and humorous and this is another long standing service to bless people who work on the land.

In terms of activities in the Council, as I mentioned last month these have slowed down over the Christmas period. I had hoped to say something about the Precept (how much you pay towards the running of the Town Hall) this month but we are not quite there yet. I can say that the numbers are getting a thorough going over and I will be able to report back next month.

There are though one or two things of particular importance have been coming to the conclusion at the Council. Firstly I will mention the housing application for People’s Park. Once it was decided that the site of the new health centre would be at Churchfield Road the land, owned by the NHS, would inevitably be sold and likely used for housing. We at the Council wanted to make sure that we could get the best possible outcome in the circumstances. The planning application for 100 homes fits all the legal requirements for the layout of such developments, namely 35% affordable homes, 40% open space and play amenities and so, if it was necessary to have a development here, this planning application seems a good one.

The other main item coming to a conclusion is the development of a report documenting the Council’s view of Sudbury and It’s Future. As I’ve mentioned before a lot what the Council does is to act as a pressure group but that will not work unless there is a clear view what we want. The report looks at the major activities of the town as regards jobs, its economy, leisure and infrastructure. One of the Council’s big concerns is that on the one hand we want development but other hand we don’t want the town to be overwhelmed and lose the character we all like. The report has recently gone through Council and after one or two adjustments I hope it will be available to a wider audience.

Just before I finish I want to make mention of a charity organ recital I am organising at St Gregory’s Church to raise funds for the Mayor’s Charities.

The hour long recital will be given by Tom Cogan and Hilary and I will also be playing. Tickets are £7.50 with tickets available at the Town Hall, Compact Music or the Tourist Information Office. Hope you can join us.

Rotary Club of Sudbury We always say, don’t we, that Christmas is a time of giving. Well, people from Sudbury and district have been very generous and we are pleased to be able to report that Rotary’s Christmas activities – the Christmas Tree Festival, the concerts and the Tree of Memories and Santa’s Grotto – between them realised over £4000 clear of expenses, all of which will go to Rotary’s charities. Thank you so much for your generosity.

Rotary meets every Monday lunchtime at the Mill Hotel and most weeks we are addressed by a visiting speaker on a whole range of topics. Rotary promotes youth activities and our first meeting of the year featured our candidate for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA). Emma Beadle. This is a leadership development programme that takes place over a residential week; candidates have to be aged between 18 and 26. Emma described to us the many Emma Beadle, our RYLA candidate, activities, and challenges, which being presented with the RYLA they had to face during the week;.

Certificate of Proficiency by The course was held at Grafham President John Gardner Water Centre near Huntingdon.

The participants were formed into competitive groups and, for example, they not only had to build a small boat to sail across the lake, but they had to learn how to build a larger boat not realising why until at the end of the week they had to build the larger boat to get back to base! It was clear from Emma’s presentation that she had benefited immensely from the week; and, althougb too modest to actually say so, it was equally obvious that she was one of the stars of the week – we wish her well for the future.

At the time of writing we are looking forward to a talk by John Taylor on “Suffolk - The Greenest County” followed in February by Ashley Cooper who will be telling us about conservation work at Hill Farm, Gestingthorpe and I am sure that there will also be some references to the Roman villa and the many artefacts which are to be found there. Leigh-Ondrea will talk to us about “Successfully minding my own business” and later in March, Glen Mansbridge from TTL will be telling us how to cope with and get the best out of our computer equipment.

Just a reminder again that in April when we shall be holding Crucial Crew week, giving an opportunity for children from local schools to learn how to deal with dangerous and tricky situations. This has proved very popular for a number of years now and we know that children remember these experiences well into the future – and sometimes let on to their younger peers what to expect. Well, this time there will be some new scenarios, something different, which will not be revealed in advance. The suspense! Volunteers for this event are welcome – please get in touch. Emma, our RYLA candidate, first cam across Rotary through coming along to Crucial Crew first as a schoolgirl and then as a volunteer.

When you hear the word hypnosis, do you think of swinging watches?

EDUCATION AND LEARNING Lisa Chambers, Nikki Edwards, Adrian Orr, Suffolk County Council, together with Gordon Jones, Chair of Governors Thomas Gainsborough School, attended the meeting to discuss and answer questions from members regarding the state of education in Suffolk. The following points were raised: • Suffolk County Council’s goal is to ‘Champion all the Children’.

• The challenge is to increase the attainment of 5 grade A*-C’s -currently 50.8% to 65% by 2017.

• Michael Gove has changed the way in which results are reported. Previously results were taken from children who had undertaken the same exam two or more times. Now results are based on their first exam only.

• 75% of the schools in Suffolk are Academies. These schools were often overlooked but they now have regular contact with Suffolk County Council.

• Concerns were raised over the amount of stress teachers are under.

• Parents need to be better informed of their expectations.

• It was felt that during the reorganisation of schools not enough support was given to teachers. Suffolk County Council did not agree with this and reported that the Suffolk Organisation Review was the biggest in the country in the last ten years.

• A lot of work has been put into primary schools since the reorganisation. The attainment levels in parts of the county that have been reorganised have been outstripping other schools with good results.

• Historic under performance in the previous three tier system.

• Generally standards are improving just not quick enough.

• There are 332 schools in Suffolk.

• It was felt that there is a lack of hands on support from Suffolk County Council.

• Suffolk County Council now employs an officer who all headteachers have direct one to one contact with. This officer goes into every school at least once every six weeks.

• Failing headteachers – an interim board will work very closely with the school, the Headteacher and the Board of Governors. The final decision is made by the Chair of Governors and the local authority and any decision to remove a headteacher is not taken lightly.

• In the Education White Paper, it states that the education of children is the responsibility of individual headteachers and governors. The local council’s role is to ensure there are enough school places and to support and understand why things are going well or not.

8. TO ADOPT THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE FOLLOWING COMMITTEES Following a recommendation from the newly formed Governance working party all Chairs of committees are requested to give a brief report from their committee outlining key issues. Mrs Osborne advised that the consultation regarding the new Community Levy Infrastructure has just commenced and the Town Council will be required to submit a detailed response.

Leisure & Environment - Mr Smith advised that following discussions with Mr Wilde, the Market Manager, the Committee had agreed to purchase a ‘pop-up’ stall that can be used by new traders for a trial period. Members were also informed that Mrs Osborne had visited schools in Sudbury regarding the School Council but due to limited staff resources the schools are unable to participate in a School Council.

Highways & Footpaths - Mr Platt advised that the committee has submitted recommendations regarding the transport infrastructure in Sudbury and is waiting for feedback from SCC. A cycling plan is being developed in conjunction with the Cycle Group committee. There are concerns about lorries causing obstruction when making deliveries in Girling Street and councillors were informed that following a discussion at the Steering Group meeting this is being investigated by Lindsey Barker. SCC also have concerns about heavy vehicles parking on the paving adjacent to the Gainsborough statue on Market Hill causing damage to the surface Finance - Mr Bennett (Vice Chair) informed councillors that Larking & Gowen accountants have been appointed to assist with the preparation of the budget for the next financial year.

Mr Sayers declared a non pecuniary interest in agenda item 14.1, Mr Platt declared a non pecuniary in agenda items 10 and 14.1 Policy & Resources - Mr Spivey confirmed that match funding for the PCSO in Sudbury would continue in the next financial year. The Town Council will act as a sponsor for the Credit Union already operating in the Town Hall Advice Centre. It is envisaged that this will receive more publicity following involvement of local churches and a newly formed support group.

9. COUNTY COUNCILLOR’S REPORTS Councillor Colin Spence reported: • Money has been given from his locality budget to St. Gregory’s Church and the Eden’s Project.

• Refurbishment of the bridges over Spinglands Way is almost completed.

• Cycle routes – undergrowth in Acton Lane has been inspected and apart from one small area where two cycles would not be able to pass, no further problems had been identified.

• In order to create a cycle route along Acton Lane funding would need to be identified and if this was to be included in the LTP3, the Town Council would have to reconsider its priorities. Parking spaces would be removed in Acton Lane and not all residents may be in agreement. RESOLVED That Mr Spence be invited to attend the November meeting of the Highways Committee to discuss the proposed cycle routes. That Mr Spence be THANKED and his report NOTED. Councillor John Sayers reported: • Money has been given from his locality budget to St. Gregory’s Church.

• The Suffolk Waste Partnership will launch their new recycling scheme at the Christmas Light switch on Friday 28th November.

• £100,000 has been made available to Suffolk County Council to encourage residents to be more active. Local organisations can apply for some of this money.

• £350,000 has been made available to Suffolk County Council to improve the quality of life and wellbeing of vulnerable families.

RESOLVED - That Mr Sayers be THANKED and his report NOTED. 10. POLICE REPORT Inspector Cooper and PCSO Laura Mansell attended the meeting and a copy of the Sudbury Sector police report was distributed. PCSO Mansell thanked the Council for continuing to fund the role of a PCSO. She advised members that on the first Saturday of each month, a crime reduction information stand will be present on Sudbury market, giving advice and selling crime reduction items. It is now unlikely that any prosecutions will be made following incidents of burnt and vandalised cars in Acton Lane.

However police will continue to appeal for any information people may have. RESOLVED That thanks be given to those who have re-designed the monthly Police report. That Inspector Cooper and PSCO Mansell be THANKED for attending the meeting and their report NOTED. 11. DISTRICT COUNCILLOR’S REPORT Mr Simon Barrett reported: • Belle Vue House is now subject of a Community right to purchase bid. This request has been registered with Babergh District Council.

• The expression of interest from Barry Drury regarding Belle Vue House is ongoing.

• Planning members have visited Walnuttree and St Leonards Hospital sites. These planning applications are now registered at Babergh but have not yet been received by the Town Council.

• The Community Levy Infrastructure is out for consultation. A formal response from the Town Council will be required imminently.

• Babergh District Council’s Planning IT system has been updated but not yet working 100%. This should be completed by the end of November.

• An accommodation review is currently underway. This should be completed by January/February 2015.

• A Priority Based Report is being constructed to try and find large savings across both Babergh and Mid-Suffolk District Councils.

• Retail Relief – An occupied retail property with a rateable value of £50,000 or less, wholly or mainly being used as a shop, restaurant, café or drinking establishment came apply to receive business rate relief of up to £1000. An application form is available to download from Babergh’s website. RESOLVED That Mr Barrett be THANKED and his report NOTED. 12. MAYOR’S ANNOUNCEMENTS The Mayor presented his monthly report. ELECTRIC CHARGING POINTS IN SUDBURY Members discussed possibility of installing electric charging points in the town centre. RECOMMENDED That SCC and BDC be requested to investigate the possibility of installing electric charging points within the town centre, possibly in one of the car parks.

8. PARKING RESTRICTIONS IN CHRISTOPHER LANE Members discussed concerns from residents regarding cars parked in Christopher Lane causing problems for pedestrians. RECOMMENDED That concerns about parking in Christopher Lane be forwarded to SCC with the suggestion that a safety audit is undertaken.

9. BUDGET FOR HIGHWAYS AND FOOTPATHS COMMITTEE The Town Clerk advised that the Highways & Footpaths committee does have a budget and delegated powers for spending but these powers have not been used certainly within the last six years. Mr Platt also advised members that Community Infrastructure Levy funding may become available in the future. RECOMMENDED That the Highways & Footpaths committee is allocated a budget for highways projects.

10. PARKING/FOOTPATH IN INGRAMS WELL ROAD Members discussed concerns about pedestrian safety in Ingrams Well Road. The problem has been made worse since the closure of Footpath 11. RECOMMENDED That SCC Highways be requested to consider a temporary footpath in Ingrams Well Road while Footpath 11 remains closed.

That SCC Highways be requested to suspend parking on one side of Ingrams Well Road and introduce a parking restriction, for example between 11am and 12 noon, on the other side to prevent cars from parking all day. That the remainder of the cycle report be NOTED. 11. UPDATE FROM SCC HIGHWAYS Mr Platt updated members on various highways issues following discussions with Mr S Merry. Mr Platt also advised that a meeting was due to take place on 27th November with representatives from SCC Highways and County Councillors Mr C Spence and Mr J Sayers to discuss ways of working together in order to achieve outcomes to ongoing highways issues. RECOMMENDED That the report from Mr Platt be NOTED. That Mr Platt reports back to the next H&F meeting following the meeting with SCC Highways 12. STREET LIGHTING IN CHURCH STREET/FRIARS STREET Members were advised of street lighting not working in Church Street and Friars Street.

RECOMMENDED. That Mrs Ford-Platt advises the complainant to contact SCC informing them of the identity numbers of the lights not working.

Mr Forder advised that Larking and Gowen have been reviewing the budget for the current year in order to assist in preparing the budget for the next financial year. Savings have been identified in the current figures but these need to be confirmed. Mr Forder also confirmed that the grant from BDC will be considerably lower for the next financial year and additional costs may be incurred due to maintenance at the Delphi Centre and also possible changes to the accounting system. RESOLVED That further work will be undertaken and the budget and precept discussed at the next Finance meeting. That special thanks go to both Mr O Forder and Mr R Spivey for the considerable time spent in reviewing the accounts.

7. TO DISCUSS A REQUEST FOR USE OF MAYOR’S PARLOUR. Members discussed a request from the Friends of St Peter’s for the use of the Mayor’s Parlour. It was agreed that a policy regarding the use of the Mayor’s Parlour by other organisations needs to be agreed before any decision is made. All members appreciated the work done by the Friends of St Peter’s in maintaining and supporting St Peter’s Church. RESOLVED That

That selection of low life that inhabit the Mother of Parliaments really do need watching. It was recently asked that if all the oil is in the Middle East why are the dipsticks in Westminster? Laughable they may be but it does not make them any less dangerous. Their absolute incompetence would be excusable if they weren’t so dammed expensive.

Having been caught with their fingers in the till to trouser fictitious expenses the ever gullible British public couldn’t wait to re-elect them. Therefore, realising that no one actually expects better of them they continue their scandalous ways. Alex Salmond has now apparently decided that he enjoys our company after all and is standing as an MP in our parliament. This is of course after pocketing £65,000 in 2010 after voluntarily leaving that august body in order to assist him to adjust to non-parliamentary life. So will he be repaying this exorbitant sum if elected? Watch this space.

Every decent journalist has known for years that a paedophile ring existed in the corridors of power. Politicians have been named so why has it taken some 30 years to creep into the public remit? The false exclamations of horror emitting from Downing Street are sickening in their hypocrisy. Some will be outed as either too old or senile to stand trial and a couple of sacrificial lambs will be named and shamed. Its no use Cameron or his chums feigning ignorance, the evidence has been in the public domain for years, but our repressive libel laws and shackled police force have ensured that the guilty remain very comfortably free. As for the victims, like the other street kids abused by gangs, they are only throw a ways! So much for a decent, Christian and just society.

Occasionally a beacon of hope does shine. Do you remember the unlamented I.D. card (or con)? Some years ago I attended a very private event in the City attended by all the great and the good in the security services. The much mooted card was held in ridicule by all attending, from the Special Branch to Border Security. It was pronounced unwieldy, unworkable, and above all prohibitively expensive. It was wished that but a fraction of the proposed cost could be redirected to fund proper ante-terrorism policing.

This legislation was eventually thwarted by our Law Lords, led by our own Lord Andrew Phillips of Sudbury. By successfully blocking progress of the Bill a major threat to our civil liberties was averted. To say nothing of the vast profits to be earned at our expense by those favoured companies who promised well paid sinecures to those same politicians once they left the Westminster gravy train. Well yet again our Andrew is in the news! Together with fellow Suffolk peer Lord Deben he successfully challenged the government’s intention of limiting the power of judicial reviews. These reviews are often the only recourse that a citizen has to establish as to whether our State institutions have acted unlawfully. Yet again Westminster tried to take a further step to erode our liberties, and thankfully a few brave men were aware enough to thwart them.

We must not let our constant vigil slip, our elected politicians are mendacious and not to be trusted, and not one of them, local or otherwise, had the common decency to send me a Christmas Card! And a very happy and prosperous new year to you all. Keep sending the emails, they brighten up my rather humdrum existence and keeps the editor amused!

Mark’s at the “Peake” of Recovery!

Now is the time when many of us have made that New Year’s resolution to change our lifestyle, get fit and improve our health and wellbeing. For some of us it’s the perfect opportunity, providing the chance to embark upon a new regime that will motivate and inspire us to energise and revive our bodies. We all have choices - but imagine, due to a split second incident, your ability to conduct your life normally changed Mark Tatham with Chris Grimwood, Peake Fitness Manager instantly? That is exactly what happened to Mark Tatham from Polstead. Mark, an Essex University Professor, and an avid bike enthusiast for most of his life, cycled 30 miles per day. An unavoidable accident - a head-on collision with a car on a day in August around ten years ago in Dedham - had a devastating impact. Not only was he rendered unconscious, having literally been hurled over the top of the vehicle onto the road, but the resulting injuries included a severely broken leg and shoulder, and he was considered lucky to have survived.

Mark was treated at Colchester hospital, under the surgeon’s care for several weeks. By January, whilst he was able to return to work at Essex University on crutches, the specialists at that stage warned that he may well be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Rather than accepting this likely scenario, Mark and his wife Kate did not admit defeat, and Kate embarked upon a quest to find someone that could help. A conversation with one of the managers at Peake Fitness, based at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa, proved very fruitful. Following an initial course of sports injury therapy, Mark was then coaxed into one-to-one sessions, starting with gentle strengthening exercises, and slowly progressing to personal training which eventually included a more general fitness regime. All Mark’s hard work, determination and perseverance has certainly paid off, in that although some weakness prevails (for example, one leg is slightly shorter than the other as a result of the injuries sustained), he is now able to attend the Peake Fitness gym frequently, and even participates in regular “Spinn” classes. Mark has nothing but praise for the management team, and the individual fitness consultants that helped him through this difficult period of his life. Peake Fitness Manager Chris Grimwood had this to say about Mark’s journey thus far, "Mark's determination and dedication to his health and fitness has been an inspiration to many of the team and fellow members here at Peake Fitness for years now. Robert Crighton As far as those who contribute to our local community are concerned, Robert Crighton must surely rate as one of the most prolific here in the world of the performing arts.

He has for many years been an outstanding director and actor with The Sudbury Dramatic Society, and was in charge of this year’s pantomime. He has just completed a highly successful year as Artist-in-Residence at The Quay Theatre. During this time he produced an unbelievable ten different plays in 52 weeks, including installations and radio broadcasts. But this writer, performer and artist is not resting on his laurels!

From February he continues to present his work on Saturday afternoons at The Quay in a series of shows – Story Hour: The Complete Alice For Families And Children. Robert will be performing stories from the Lewis Carroll books in a different selection every two weeks. This follows a template he set when he performed The Complete Sherlock Holmes there in 2010. Robert is also about to tour his acclaimed production of The Summoning of Everyman.

Medieval morality plays might for most be something of an acquired taste however, Robert’s radical reinterpretation is so accessible both to everyone and everywhere, that he is taking it to any village hall, church room or even domestic living room for those would like to have it in their community. This is a unique rendering as the audience is invited by Robert to help make the action happen – without them the story cannot be told! This exciting process turns this late 15th century work into a piece of immediate living theatre, and one that can be both shared and enjoyed in terms of the early 21st Century.

Everyman is part of his Before Shakespeare project, an ambitious scheme to record the full catalogue of British drama in the years before William Shakespeare appeared to eclipse all before him. And Robert has other plans for classical productions coming to fruition later this year.

The Summoning of Everyman is touring from March 2015 in village halls and other community spaces, and Story Hour starts on Saturday 14th February at 1pm at The Quay Theatre. Sudbury Dramatic Society Sudbury Dramatic Society’s first production of 2015 at The Quay Theatre is the fast paced and hilarious rewrite of the Hitchcock thriller, The 39 Steps adapted by Patrick Barlow which is on from Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 7th March at 7.45pm The 39 Steps started as a World War I espionage novel

by John Buchan. It became an Alfred Hitchcock film in 1935 and since then has been adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow of National Theatre of Brent fame, and become a hit in the West End where it has been selling out for the last 8 years in and now Sudbury Dramatic Society is getting its chance.

Patrick Barlow has brilliantly captured the essence of the Hitchcock script, as performed by a handful of slightly hung-over and rebellious actors on a damp Tuesday with inadequate props and scenery.

It’s a thriller, a love story and a comedy all in one; it`s got foreign spies and murder, it`s got chases over misty moors, it features sheep, cars and trains. It even has a plane crash, of sorts. What more could you ask to brighten up those dull March evenings?

Babergh was recently voted one of the UK’s best places to live and most folks would agree. After 25 years living here, at Glemsford and now Hadleigh, that includes me. Yet there’s also much misery on our doorstep. It’s easy to forget or ignore that these are tough times for people who may live just down your road or be standing in front of you in the Post Office.

I had a desperate call just before Christmas from a woman concerned about her granddaughter – let’s call her Susan. Aged 20, Susan has learning difficulties and problems with mental health. Her Job Seekers Allowance had been stopped in October resulting in her being homeless. She was now sofasurfing – sleeping each night on the settee in her sibling’s one bedroom flat.

Getting help so close to Christmas was impossible. An early appointment was made with a disability rights charity for the New Year. Their help and advice means Susan now receives Income Support. After contacting a housing scheme for homeless young women, I hope Susan will get a place of her own there, close to her grandmother.

I led a local legal services charity so understand how vital specialist disability rights work is. It faces huge demands and little local financial support. I work with homeless young people and adults with mental ill health and learning difficulties. I know ‘supported living’ schemes, like the one I hope Susan will soon call home, have growing waiting lists and reduced budgets.

It’s good that so many people find Babergh a great place to live but let’s not delude ourselves that comfort and security are available or enjoyed by all. As Ghandi once said, ‘The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members’ People like Susan.

We have a choice. We can see people like Susan as the problem, or we can see them as people with problems needing help with solutions. In May we can vote to ignore or forget the desperation and misery amongst us or vote to make security available to all.

Stretching before exercise helps prepare the body for activity by increasing the circulation of blood to the muscles and clearing the lymphatic system around the soft tissues. Stretching helps increase flexibility and joint range of movement preventing injury and improving muscle and joint performance.

HOW TO STRETCH GENTLY and SLOWLY take each muscle to the point when you start to feel a resistance, GENTLY hold the stretch for 30 to 60 seconds, allowing the muscle to release and grow longer. DO NOT cause yourself any pain – there’s no need.

CAREFUL - If you take the stretch too far you can cause an inflammatory response, meaning your body will try to repair the damage. Every time you feel pain when stretching you are actually causing damage to the soft tissue.

Stretching is also used in the treatment of injuries and the rehabilitation from injury or surgery. I use stretching within part of my treatment plans for anyone who is injured and by using a number of stretching techniques maximum performance is quickly and successful regained.

The regrowth can itself be harvested in 4 to 25 years depending on the size required. Coppicing areas of a wood in rotation not only extends the life of the individual stools but greatly increases the biodiversity of the wood creating new glades where smaller plants, and hence animals, can thrive. Coppiced hazel is used at Orchard Barn in a number of ways – it is the wattle onto which daub is smeared to create walls; several poles lashed together formed the ‘bender’ that helped keep the toolshed dry while we worked on its roof where our own elm poles have become rafters; hand cleft coppiced Sweet Chestnut were used for battens in the main barn roof.

Sudbury Bowls Club Twenty players braved the winter weather on Sunday 28th December to play the Christmas Spoon Drive – a fun competitive tournament – on the indoor rinks at the Sudbury Bowls Club on Quay Lane.

The competition is played over three sets of 6 ends, with a total personal score depending on how many winning points are made and lost over the course of the tournament. Each player picks a disc which dictates their team partners, rink number, and playing positions with a re-draw for each set. Apart from playing well of course it really is ‘the luck of the draw’ as well! It’s a friendly and fun atmosphere finishing with a buffet and drinks in the social lounge. The Ladies winner was Jacqui Edgar with Doreen Stubbs runner up and for the Men’s the winner was Len Baker with Len Smith runner up. Spoon Drives are a regular occurrence at the club and always have a good turn out of players who value the competition but in a less formal environment.

Sudbury Rowing Club competes at the Vesta scullers head and Wallingford head Vesta Scullers Head The Scullers Head is held every year in London and is rowed over the Oxford and Cambridge boat race course on the Tideway in London. It is the main long distance race in the UK for single scullers and as such it is a high level event. This year 550 people entered from all over the country. Including 5 from Sudbury Rowing Club. In the week leading up to the race there had been concerns that the strong current and easterly wind would make sculling very difficult, but in the end the sun shone and there was only a light breeze so conditions were fairly good although not fast so it was unlikely course records were to be broken.

Three of the Sudbury junior squad competed. Thomas Bowles came within the top 100 overall, which was a magnificent achievement also coming in 9th position in the J18 category. Ellie Adams and Victoria Burgess were took part in this race for the first time and both did well, with Ellie coming second in the women’s novice category only a few seconds behind the winner. Mike Arnott and Brendan Sullivan represented the Sudbury Masters Squad and both finished in the top half of the masters F category in 9th and 8th position respectively.

Wallingford Head In December various crews from Sudbury travelled to Wallingford to take on the tough Wallingford head against high-class competition. The event takes place over 4k on the Thames in Oxford with eights, fours and quads taking part. This year some categories were cancelled due to the challenging nature of the course. The Sudbury ladies four continued their streak of good results by coming 2nd out of 15 in the women’s IM3 category against clubs such as Molesey and Auriol Kensington, which is a great achievement and a tremendous benchmark coming into the new year.

The result was tainted by the fact that they would have won if it weren’t for technical difficulties that sent them into a bush on one of the tight corners.

The masters E coxed four were pleased with their performance although they had no competition in their category, and the Masters D eight came 4th out of 6 against clubs they are likely to face regularly in the coming heads.

A Sudbury Steering Group of 9 people from various walks of life has recently been set up to provide fuller information locally on how it operates and the interest rates on savings and loans - these are certainly lower than Pay-Day Loans. People just need to go to Reception in the Town Hall and ask about Credit Union. As the Steering Group becomes more established they will make more information available hopefully through more points of contact - currentlt there is just a general information leaflet.

Suffolk Family Carers Suffolk Family Carers is a local charity that provides information, support and guidance to Family Carers around Suffolk. We have been offering our services for over 25 years and one of the things we have learnt during that time is that people caring for another person at home, perhaps a family member or friend don’t usually see themselves as a Family Carer, they just see it as part of being husband, wife, father, mother, daughter, son, friend etc. Because of this, it becomes so easy to forget the importance of your own health and wellbeing as all of your physical and emotional effort and energy is spent on looking after that person, and others who may be involved such as siblings.

You may feel that your own needs do not matter at this time, but in order to provide care and support you do need to keep your own batteries charged.

In 2015 Suffolk Family Carers will be working with our hospice colleagues in Suffolk to offer an information and support programme for those people caring for someone nearing the end of their life. There will be a series of five informal sessions that offer information and an opportunity to reflect and gain support from others in a similar situation. The programme will run around the County with the first ones starting end of January. It’s aim is to improve the Family Carer’s own situation and that of the person they Care For. Newton Green’s Ellie Aldous is to be junior captain of Suffolk Girls for 2015.

The 16-year-old still has two seasons of junior golf to represent the county, and has already become a member of the senior team squad, including making her debut in the regional county golf week during 2014.

One of the longer hitters in Suffolk ladies’ golf, she and fellow Newton junior Alice Barlow became the youngster ever winners of the county’s prestigious Haskell Trophy in 2013. Ellie is at West Suffolk College where she is studying for a BTech in Sports Excellence Sciences.

She has played at Newton since the age of 10, and in 2008 made national headlines when she beat off a 100-strong field of adult golfers to win the club’s prestigious Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver. Ellie then played off a handicap of 42, although qualification for the event has now been cut to 36.

During the year her handicap was five, but at present stands at six.
