Sudbury Town Council win the Suffolk Council of the Year policy commitment to making sure all ages enjoy quality of life in a safe environment�. Councillors and staff alike are very proud of this achievement and continue to work hard to ensure that Sudbury remains a vibrant and healthy community. Residents are always welcome at our monthly council meetings where there is a chance to discuss any issues which may be causing concern or ideas for improving the quality of life in our town.

The Town Council was delighted to be awarded the title of ‘Suffolk Council of the Year‘ at an awards ceremony hosted by the Suffolk Association of Local Councils. Each year the competition has a different theme – last year was about supporting youth in the community where Sudbury was runner up and this year it was supporting older people in the community.

Some of the judges’ comments regarding Sudbury’s entry included: “This council had thought of everything�; “They have a Christmas lunch party and take care of over-indulgers�; “They use sponsorship and staff commitment to ensure success and sustainability and to offer free events where possible�; “They signpost older residents to events, clubs and support organisations�; “They even have a scheme to support clothing for the over 70s, provide bus pass support and their Mayor even takes the time to visit care homes to try and make sure they are connected to all people within their town�; “They have a

What’s On in Sudbury With the build up to Christmas, Sudbury is the place to come this December whether it’s to shop or visit.

From the December 12th, the Quay Theatre traditional family pantomime is Little Red Riding Hood, book early as their phantom is always very popular.

With the build up to Christmas there will be the Christmas Tree Festival, Craft & Gift Fairs, Concerts and the Farmers Market in St. Peter’s Church which will be on Friday 19th and there is always a wide choice of stalls at the weekly market every Thursday and Saturday.

Science students from the Thomas Gainsborough School have been given an inspirational insight into the world of business by a successful former pupil as part of a recent awards ceremony.

Jonathan Foreman – Managing Director of the award winning Observatory optical group - was the guest speaker at the school’s Sixth Form Science Awards Evening. Mr Foreman attended the school more than 30 years ago, when it was called Great Cornard Upper School and is now celebrating his 25th year in Wayne Lloyd headteacher watches business. Mr Foreman lived in a Dan Young receive his prize from Jonathan Foreman deprived area of Great Cornard before becoming a qualified optician, and opened his first practice in Muswell Hill, North London in 1989. He now runs eight practices across Suffolk and Essex, trading under the name of Wardale Williams and Observatory the Opticians. His practice in Beccles was named Independent Practice of the Year 2014 at the Optician Awards. “I was delighted to go back to my old school and see the enormous improvements, the amazing leadership of the teachers and the high achieving students and award winners. I spoke about how being an optician is a science based profession and how by using scientific processes in everyday life can result in major beneficial outcomes. If you use scientific processes with creativity and imagination you can create something people like and want, in successful business and in life.”

Following his speech Mr Foreman presented the Wardale Williams Opticians Prize to student Dan Young, 17, for his outstanding achievement in science. He received the award, which included a trophy, certificate and £100 worth of vouchers, for gaining A* grades in three science subjects when expected to attain B grades. Dan, from Acton, is currently studying Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry and plans to go to university to study physics. He said: “I am really pleased and grateful for the prize and look forward to spending my vouchers on computer games and books.”

The school’s headteacher, Wayne Lloyd, added: “The school is delighted that such a prestigious company as Wardale Williams supported our event, which gave the awards evening real gravitas. Dan and his parents feel honoured that Wardale Williams value and recognise his achievement.” Other science awards winners were students Ivo Long – outstanding academic achievement, Ian Neill – outstanding effort and progress, Arthur Redmonds – outstanding academic achievement and Aiden Griggs – outstanding effort and progress.

Planning contact with children over Christmas FEJBUJPO

By Helen Harris, Mediator Making arrangements for the children to spend time with both parents over the Christmas period can be extremely stressful and very difficult. Who is going to take them to the pantomime, their school play, the Christmas bazaar, can you both go? Who will be paying for what? What is happening for New Year?

When will the children see their grandparents?

TTFUT Organisation and agreement are key. Try to plan arrangements well in advance. Try to discuss matters amicably with your ex-partner to ensure that the children get the opportunity to spend time with both parents over the Christmas period. Sudbury Mayor’s Report Quite a busy month a busy month this month from a Civic point of view and as might be expected in the latter part of the month there was an emphasis on Remembrance events.

The first event of the month though was concerned with my efforts to promote, at least for my Mayoral year, a link between Sudbury and a town in Mali, Yanfolila, to complement charity work I do when not being Mayor. The aim is show similarities of life between our town and an apparently completely different town a long way away.

My approach is to tell people in Sudbury about Yanfolila through a series of talks at the Library and through talks at schools in Sudbury. Our first talk was given with the help of the Malian Consul to the UK and gave an overall view of recent Malian history. The next talk, which will be done by the time you read this, will be covering the similarities and differences between Sudbury and Yanfolila in their everyday lives. There’s a lot of things on the TV showing doom and gloom in West Africa but there’s a lot of positive things going on there too which I hope I can tell people about.

On the 15th October we attended the Remembrance Festival organised by the British Legion at the Ormiston Academy. The first half consisted of a very impressive show of singing and dancing by the students of the Academy with a wartime feel. The students who are at most 18 put on a very accomplished show. The second half of the festival moved onto more sober things. There was a very powerful sermon from Greg Webb, rector of St Gregory’s and a number poems and readings produced by soldiers who fought. The event was naturally finished by the Kohima epitaph and the Last Post.

Later in the week I attended a lunch at the Sudbury Rugby club to mark the 25th anniversary of the Befriending Scheme. This society was set up in 1989

by Shirley Moore to give friendship and learning opportunities to vulnerable people. Shirley described in her speech the ups and downs and determination need to make these types of organisation happen. The lunch was not only to celebrate the 25 years but also to award prizes to the group’s members and volunteers for such activities as photography and poetry. Michael Balls was the overall winner with some splendid photography.

The following week I attended a number of events. On the 22nd I attended the opening ceremony for a new building at the West Suffolk College in Bury. The opening was presided over by the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, Lord Tollemache

and the building is very impressive. I had not been to West Suffolk College before but during the tour of the whole site I was very impressed by the facilities they have there not only in academic areas but in vocational matters too. The standards they have there are very high and they have many students moving onto higher things.

Also on the 22nd I attended a small prize giving ceremony for the Kumon Educational organisation. This is an organisation that gives kids extra support in learning maths and English using a technique developed by a Japanese educationalist. It was clear the method is very effective and increased the confidence of the kids greatly.

Later in the week I paid a visit to the headquarters of St Nicholas’s Hospice in Bury. I don’t know about you but my knowledge of hospice’s was limited to the idea that this was where you spent your last days if you had a serious illness but it is clear from talking to the staff there that a lot of the work is spent helping families and patients carry on as normally as possible. This in many ways extends what you and the family can do and is about creating as many positive situations as is possible in the circumstances.

On the 2nd November it was firework’s time. The Council put a lot of effort into organising a fireworks display at the Delphi social centre. Despite the drizzly weather probably about 2,000 people turned out to enjoy a very impressive display.

On the 6th November I attended a small charity event at Juniper Flowers in North St. They were organising a tea and cake event through the day to raise money for the Forget-Me-Not charity another charity that is working to deal with the growing issue of dementia.

The following day Hilary and I attended a remembrance service held at the Red House care home. The service was very well attended and there were songs, readings and hymns to give a very effective service. On the 9th I returned to the Red House to wish Belinda a happy 100th birthday. I can only say that if I reach that point I hope to be as clear minded as Belinda obviously is!

On the 8th November I attended the Autumn concert of the Sudbury Choral Society where the music was a celebration of English Pastoral Choral music. I look forward to their Christmas concert on the 21st December at St Peters.

The 9th also saw the holding of the main Remembrance service in Sudbury.

This was again organised by the British Legion and saw a long parade of Army and Air Force cadets, scouts, brownies, sea cadets and many other groups along with the very welcome American contingent from RAF Mildenhall, marching and walking through the town to the Remembrance service at St Gregory’s. Greg Webb led a very moving service with not only an emphasis on the 100th anniversary but a reminder of what a destructive business war is not only in deaths but in changing the lives of the people who survive. On the 11th there was a small ceremony outside the Town Hall, with about 150 people, marking the eleventh hour.

One of the things I’ve been trying to promote on the Council while I’ve been mayor is to try and improve communications amongst Councillors and the general public. These things don’t have to be major things but can help to make people feel involved. So for instance at Council meetings rather than just pass through the minutes of the various committees each Committee Chair says something about what the issues are; I’ve also instigated informal meetings of the Chairs of Committees to try and talk about the major issues facing the Council so these can be fed into day-to-day activities. We want to think closely about what new services might be driven our way by Suffolk County Council and Babergh District Council because of the changes to the way they do business.

Light up your Christmas early this year by coming along to the Lavenham Christmas Fair for a festive extravaganza of entertainment, exhibitions, shopping and wining and dining. Last year was a huge success for the stalls and all the shops and galleries in the village and this year the fair will be even bigger with more fun events for children, including donkey sleigh rides, a bouncy castle, vintage fairground rides and Father Christmas himself in his grotto. Our lovely medieval village is a wonderful place to shop and stroll and sight-see at Christmastime. Especially if you dress up Dickensian-style! There will be 80 different stalls on the Market Place over the weekend.

Singer/guitarist Peter Hepworth and other musicians will be performing all day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. They appeared at the Lavenham Art Festival in May, were a big hit and are making a welcome return.

Between 1- 2 pm, the wonderful local Lavenham Upbeat Contemporary Choir will be singing outside the Guildhall. 4.30pm Guided Lantern Walk of the village. Lavenham Christmas Craft Fair The 'Christmas craft fair' at Lavenham village hall is just around the corner and now fully booked, is shaping up to be a wonderful festive event. Last year's 'Christmas craft fair' was hughley successful and had a fantastic visitor attendance and we are hopefull it will be the same this year. Event organiser Kylie Sparkes says “we are all really looking forward to visiting Lavenham again with this event, we had such positive, enthusiastic feedback from the visitors at the the last event and have another great fair full of exciting new talented local crafters to inspire you for the festive season.”

The ‘Christmas craft fair’ is on the 13th December 2014 in the Village hall at Lavenham, it will be open from 10am - 4pm and amoungst the craft stalls you will find glass and ceramics, textiles and weaving, homebaking and preserves, silk flowers and fresh flower arrangements, handmade soaps and candles, art and photography, handmade jewellery, handmade cards and much, much more. Free assessments to help those with dyslexia to be extended following successful event Scores of people from three market towns have taken advantage of free professional advice during a week-long event to support people with dyslexia.

Opticians Wardale Williams held a weeklong event offering support and advice at its practices in Sudbury, Haverhill and Halstead in support of Dyslexia Awareness Week, run by the British Dyslexia Association. As part of the event people were being offered free Coloured Overlays Assessments, which can help Optometrist Joanna Williams carrying out an overlay assess which particular colour may assessment of a patient at benefit some people with dyslexia to Wardale Williams. significantly improve their reading skills.

The event was such a success - with many people attending the practices during the event - the opticians has decided to offer the free assessments until the end of the year.

Joanna Williams, senior optometrist at Wardale Williams, said: “We haven’t calculated final numbers yet, but the event was extremely well attended at all three practices. Several people had an assessment, which for many found a way to improve their reading skills and many others have booked up for an assessment over the coming weeks. “Many people with dyslexia find reading difficult because they experience peculiar visual symptoms when looking at a printed page – words may move, blur in and out of focus or run into each other.

However, for some people with dyslexia these symptoms can be reduced by the use of carefully applied colour and are treated by using either coloured overlays on text or by wearing specially tinted glasses.

“As a responsible and contentious provider of healthcare we have decided to offer the free assessments up until the end of the year to support people in our area who have dyslexia. This method can dramatically improve people’s reading skills, learning ability and future prospects.”

The ever-popular Christmas Tree Festival will be held at St Peters from 9th to 14th of December and there will be a Tree of Memories Concert in St Peter’s with the “Sudbury Sings” Choir on 17th December at 7.30pm.

Recently, two Rotarians visited two local primary schools recently to present sets of illustrated dictionaries.

This is an annual tradition for the Rotary Club, which has regularly donated and presented dictionaries to a number of primary schools in the Sudbury area. First stop, pictured here, was St. Gregory Church of England Primary School, Sudbury, where Head Teacher Mrs. Harman thanked the Club and said “the books are beautiful, bright and inviting. They will encourage use by the children and provide an invaluable resource for research.”

The Rotarians then visited Pot Kiln Primary School, Great Cornard. On behalf of the school, Head Teacher Ms. Davis said ”A huge thank you from Pot Kiln children. They will use the dictionaries to continue to support their learning”.

Rotary is proud of the role it is playing in eradicating polio across the world. Now there are only three countries left where polio is endemic. The purple “Rotary Crocus” has become a symbol of the fight against poilio and as a fundraiser for the End Polio Now Campaign. Rotary Crocuses have been distributed in 15 countries and have already raised around £300,000. Purple was chosen as the colour because this matched the dye painted on the fingers of children who have been immunised. Schools across the UK have been encouraged to plant crocuses as a way not only of fundraising but to make children aware of the plight of children in other countries who suffer from this and other diseases – and to learn how crocuses grow!

Here in Sudbury, under the watchful eye of their teachers and some Rotarians, children in two of our primary schools – St Gregory’s and Pot Kiln Primary (pictured here) - had a fun time planting bulbs which, come the spring, will – we hope – emerge as purple crocuses.

Recently, Rotarian Don Watson’s daughter, Beth addressed the Club and told us about her work with Smartworks, a charity that helps women on low incomes get a job and become financially independent. They provide interview clothes and interview training, enabling them not only to feel more confident but also to start to believing in their own ability to succeed and move on with their lives. Beth told us of the work of over 75 trained volunteers who work with their, helping them to make them look great and feel confident for their job interview. These are women who have very low self-esteem and no smart clothes of their own to wear. The charity relies on financial contributions, volunteer time and clothing donations from committed individuals and organisations.

Rotary places a great emphasis on youth, not just on becoming members (!) but to encourage and help with career development. Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is a leadership programme coordinated by Rotary Clubs across the world and each year, thousands of young people participate in this program. Each year, young people ages 14–30 are sponsored by Rotary Clubs to attend a special event run to provide an effective training experience covering the fundamentals of leadership, the ethics of positive leadership and the importance of communication skills. Our candidate this year is Emma Jane Beadle who is training to be a primary school teacher and she will be addressing the Rotary Club of Sudbury on 5th January Just a reminder again that Rotary is open to people of all ages and we would like more of you to join us, both as individuals and as companies. “The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome will become bankrupt. People must again learn to work instead of living on public assistanceâ€?. Cicero 55BC So, we’ve learnt absolutely tiddly-squit in 2,068 years! “The budget should be balanced!â€? well there’s a joke. The EU demands of Britain the sum of ÂŁ1.7 billion. Does our government believe that we are all so gullible as not to know what would happen next? Can you believe it, our Chancellor heroically negotiates a 50% reduction and hails it as a splendid victory. Obviously not linked to the condition that we will pay same once the EU’s accounts are properly audited, sounds like local government to me. As for the European Gravy train I notice that the failed Welsh windbag Kinnock and his tribe have trousered almost ÂŁ10 million from Brussels as he, Gladys and the kids and their in-laws have found gainful employment. Well it beats existing in a council house in Pontypool.

But can we be sanctimonious here in sleepy Suffolk? Our MP (yes, he’s still there) has pocketed over £118,000 from outside interests in the last year. Not content with a salary and expenses that could keep the likes of me in Guinness for a lifetime (some £81,000) he continues to line his deep pockets.

While I’m at it I decided to investigate the misnamed earnings of our local politicians. No wonder they stay silent on the subject of our mendacious MP. Lets start with Suffolk C.C. Individual basic allowances of up to £10,000 + per councillor (totalling £762,903) plus Special Responsibility allowances totalling some £276,778, and then of course the more justified travel and subsistence expenses of £97,140. As what makes that lot worth over a million quid, its not as if they’re particularly good at the job? The Sudbury traffic hump comes to mind. And why on earth do we need some 75 County Councillors in this rural backwater?

And now to the next unloved tier, Babergh. Dreamt up in 1974 to offer a more efficient democracy in South Suffolk. Again, loads of them. I actually think they’re breeding out there. Husband and wife teams abound so watch out for the kids, probably potential Kinnocks to join the bounteous wagon train that is politics. Again “special responsibility allowances� abound. I appreciate that Councillors should be recompensed for their expenses incurred but since when did local government become such a well paid sinecure. It may be argued that without such earnings politics would be the sole remit of the wealthy. Rubbish! Our volunteers across Suffolk work tirelessly for local causes for little recompense or recognition. Until local government re-organisation so did our politicians, of all parties and class. In fact I know of many local people of good standing who would willing administer our Borough if they did not have to ally themselves with a particular party to do so.

So how about one small step to cut costs? Halve the number of County Councillors and halve their basic and special responsibility allowances. The saving would be in the region of £750,000 per annum with no obvious detriment to the electorate, that’s got to be an extra 15 policemen or about 40 lollypop ladies, and I know what would do the least harm! And that’s without starting on Babergh.

Stoke By Nayland Golf Club Veterans As a result of the outstanding support from the members of Stoke By Nayland Veterans Section the Captain, Peter Jay, and other members of the committee were able to visit Hillside Special School, Sudbury to present a cheque to the Headteacher, Mrs Sue Upson, a cheque for £5,418.60. Hillside Special School is a community special school for pupils with severe, profound or multiple learning difficulties where the children range in age from 2½ to 19. This is a superb sum which has already been used by the school to assist with the replacement of part of their playground climbing frames.

Suffolk secures £350,000 Signs of Safety funding One of ten local authorities to secure Department for Education funding in England, Suffolk County Council has been successful in securing £350,000 to improve the quality and effectiveness of our work with children and families. The county council is one of ten local authorities benefitting from Department for Education’s Innovations Project grant of £4.7 million to implement Signs of Safety practice across Suffolk’s children’s services.

The programme for implementing Signs of Safety in Suffolk began in February 2014. To date, over 1000 staff from within children and young people’s services and partner agencies including the police, schools, the voluntary sector, health and housing have received initial training. Terry Murphy, the lead child protection consultant working with Suffolk over the past year, said: “Suffolk is gaining more momentum and getting earlier results than I have seen anywhere else internationally with their implementation of Signs of Safety. By applying it to all children’s services and taking a strong and comprehensive approach to implementation, they are setting a great example for how to bring about better outcomes for children and families in England.”

New Recycling Service launched A new service, designed to make recycling even easier, has gone live with Suffolk residents being given the chance to recycle even more at home. The new enhanced household recycling service means that residents can now recycle: food and drink cartons, aerosol cans, books, metal pots, pans and trays . From Monday 3 November these new materials will be collected alongside the usual items of: paper, card, cans, foil, plastic bottles, tubs and trays. Residents can even recycle textiles in their recycling bin as long as they are in the special bags provided by the council.

Cllr Andrew Nunn, chairman of the Suffolk Waste Partnership said: “I am delighted to be able to announce our new enhanced recycling service. The people of Suffolk are amongst the top performers in the country with 53% of our waste already being recycled. However, there is still more we can do and this new service will help people recycle even more” £100,000 funding aims to get Suffolk moving A new grant scheme encouraging people to get active and enjoy Suffolk’s natural environment has been announced today by Suffolk’s Public Health team. ‘Getting Suffolk Moving’ is a £100,000 pot to which the county’s voluntary groups and community organisations can apply to fund projects to promote walking, gardening, volunteering, swimming and anything else that boosts physical activity in the outdoors. Councillor Alan Murray, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for health and adult care, said: “I’m pleased to announce this new fund, which has been set up to prompt a range of projects to get people more active while enjoying the wonderful outdoors, wherever they live in Suffolk. Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health, reducing your risk of disease in later life, controlling your weight and even contributing to positive mental health.

Through our commitment to become the most active county in England we’re encouraging Suffolk’s public to get involved in walking locally, enjoying the garden, managing local green space or rediscovering cycling.”

The scheme is open to bids of up to £5,000, but larger amounts may be considered where projects can demonstrate exceptional contributions to increase daily activity. Applications can be made online at www.suffolkcf.org.uk Success for first ever Suffolk Skills Show Suffolk businesses turned out in mass to support the first ever Suffolk Skills show; a skills and careers event reaching over 4000 young people. The event set out to engage with Suffolk’s young people and provide and insight into the career opportunities available to them locally. The show which took place at Trinity Park in Ipswich targeted those between 11 and 24. The businesses exhibiting at the event worked hard to ensure those attending left with their eyes opened to the many career streams across Suffolk, some which they may never have considered.

There were many interactive indoor and outdoor stands showcasing opportunities in energy, IT & technology, finance and business services, creative digital, agriculture, construction, motor vehicle, advanced manufacturing, ports and logistics as well as HM Forces and a ‘have a go’ area where attendees were able to try their hand at new skills.

Prudent use of Prunings at Orchard Barn OBee Volunteers show how cherry branches donated by an Offton resident will be used as balustrades on the boardwalk providing wheelchair access to the orchard.

In renovating our old orchard as much use as possible is made of fruit wood prunings. In this case we have given a second life (as a hand rail) to a large piece of cherry plum. Volunteers are taught traditional skills using hand tools on the off-grid site.

Big Lottery funding is paying for our Access to the Orchard project which is enabling the construction of the accessible boardwalk by volunteers, but has also provided over 140 days of free green wood working training to over 33 local people including 20 newcomers. Participants enjoy using their skills creatively elsewhere and revised their perception of ‘waste’ materials. We’ve still got a few balustrades to craft, so if you fancy having a go get in touch!

‘Father Christmas calls out, “A Merry Christmas! Long live the true King!”

By ex-punk rocker Andrew Stewart-Darling, Senior Pastor, Stour Valley Vineyard Church It’s no secret, I am a big fan of the writer CS Lewis, not least his classic book, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, but it is always surprises me how Father Christmas unexpectedly pops up in it.

You may remember how the White Witch had cast her spell on Narnia, decreeing that it must be always winter and never Christmas, so the country is covered with snow. But Aslan, the true king, who is a royal lion, has returned to save the Narnia kingdom from the White Witch and somewhere in the process Father Christmas arrives bringing hope of a better future. Not long after, the snow starts to slowly melt. “I’ve come at last,” said he. “She has kept me out for a long time, but I have got in at last.

Aslan is on the move. The witch’s magic is weakening.” And Lucy felt that deep shiver of gladness that you only get if you are being solemn and still.

I only realised recently that the source of the winter spell in Narnia, and its ending, had a deep personal meaning for CS Lewis. The melting snow is one way that Lewis describes the last stage of his own experience of religious conversion. His journey of faith as an Oxford don was a long, slow process— first an acceptance of Theism and later, belief in and surrender to Jesus Christ.

CS Lewis made the choice for God. Yet he insists his conversion was not dramatic, but quiet. After accepting God there was, however, “repercussion on the imaginative level.” Lewis uses vivid words and images to describe his inner change of heart. “I felt as if I were a man of snow at long last beginning to melt. The melting was starting in my back—drip-drip and presently trickletrickle. I rather disliked the feeling.”

His picture of snow melting is a good one, He suggest how a person’s long coldness of heart may be changed, bit by bit, into a warmer, living heart for God. No wonder that Lewis later used this picture of snow, enlarging it to a whole snowy kingdom under the White Witch’s spell. When the snow of Narnia melts, Lewis is suggesting how winter in our hearts gives way to a springtime of faith. We might feel cold to the period of Christmas. It might not be a time of ‘happy families’. It might highlight our loneliness and vulnerability. We might be fed up already with the constant TV Christmas ads, which remind us what we don’t have. If so, my heart goes out to you. Maybe you could think about joining us for one of our church services at Christmas. I’d love to meet you. I recognise, too, that we might feel cold to the story of Jesus and struggle with the whole nativity story. We may wrestle with the rest of his story, which sees him, against all odds, give hope through himself to a world in pain and despair.

But I ask you to ponder on this. What if Jesus was never born and Christmas was just another day in December. What if it was only ever winter and never Christmas? Would you feel the emptiness? Imagine, no reason, no season. No light in the darkness. By taking a small step of faith towards a belief in Jesus maybe you, too, could experience the melting snow.

As Father Christmas leaves the home of Mr and Mrs Beaver, he calls out, “A Merry Christmas! Long live the true King!” It won’t always be winter. Spring is coming. Happy Christmas!

New Captains at Stoke by Nayland November is the month of change at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club as the new Captains are elected for the coming year. The Club AGM took place on Friday 14th November where the outgoing Club Captain Steve Clark recounted the highlights of his year and presented trophies to all the competition winners.

Steve reported on the IPSA Handa PGA Seniors Championship and the LET Access Series tournament, two professional tournaments that the Club had hosted during the year as well as Inter Club matches, Mixed Competitions and Captain Pro challenges that he had played in. He Julian Lamb (Club Captain) also congratulated Captains from the Eileen Hands (Lady Captain) other Sections Roz Clements, Peter Roz Clements (Past Lady Captain) Jay, Barbara Rowe and Tom Hatton Steve Clark (Past Club Captain) on their very successful years. A combined total of over £11,000 had been raised for charities by the Stoke by Nayland members. The Club Champions for 2014 were Ian Carter and Hannah Moul. Ian also collected the Order of Merit trophy while the Ladies Order of Merit winner was Jude Hanner. Julian Lamb was then elected as the new Club Captain with Ian Thompson as his Club Vice Captain. The new Lady Captain is Eileen Hands, Lady Veterans’ Captain Christine McVeigh, Veterans’ Captain Peter Garnett and Junior Captain Alex English. The Captains will be supporting St Helena Hospice, Eden- Rose Coppice, East Anglian Air Ambulance and Helping Hands as their chosen charities. The AGM was followed the next day, on a misty Saturday morning, by the Drive In. Supporters gathered around the first Gainsborough tee to watch Julian and Eileen, nervously, hit good drives down the fairway to get their years off to a great start. Julian experienced an exploding golf ball and a presentation of ceramic ‘lambs’ before he was able to drive off! The members then took part in a Drive In Greensomes Competition on both the Gainsborough and Constable Courses.

Promising start for Max Hemson Newton Green’s Max Hemson has made a promising start to his career as an assistant to professional Tim Cooper.

Hemson recently qualified to begin training as an assistant professional at the club, where he has been a member of its successful junior policy. Working to become a professional golfer is now on a par with a degree course, and in his first outing since his new career began he notched his best score to date – a three over par 72 in the Suffolk Winter Alliance meeting held at Newton. He shared first place with Suffolk PGA stroke play champion Rob Pritchard (Crettingham), and the pair were two shots ahead of Danny Barton (Waldringfield). Hemson has already worked in the Newton shop for a year, and during that time has been making a name for himself in the Suffolk Golf Partnership initiative by carrying out voluntary coaching of youngsters at a number of venues, including the Suffolk Show. He has also been helping co-ordinate Newton’s new Facebook page.
