In October 2016 One Hundred and Fifty Two walkers of all ages stepped out in memory of all of the families living with or having lost someone with dementia. We are delighted to report that registration is now open for our 2017 event. The walk will take place on Saturday 7th October 2017 starting and finishing at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre, Sudbury. You may remember Jerry Thatcher, 70 years young, Jerry was caring for his mum Kate aged 100 and living with dementia. This year’s walk is dedicated to Kate who sadly died just two week before last year’s walk.

Jerry has just completed a "500" mile personal pilgrimage across Spain to promote "Dementia Awareness". He walked from St. Jean Pied de Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain ."The Camino Frances". Along the whole route he pushed his "Little Donkey" shopping trolley made by and supported by Sholley of Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. Having pushed a wheelchair for his 100 year old mother for the last 12 years of her life, travelling to over 100 countries and Islands, he felt his skills and experiences would make it appropriate to her memory.

Jerry was the reason that the Sudbury Memory Walk was set up. Jerry feels passionately about raising awareness to dementia and ensuring that there is not only support for the person living with dementia but also the importance of support for those loving and living with someone with dementia.

Due to the changes in funding arrangements, the synergy cafes in Sudbury and Hadleigh were due to stop in April this year. If it had not been for The Bridge Project, Sudbury and Ansell Community Centre, both cafes would have closed. This year we invite you to raise funds for for the De-caf Sudbury, and Ansell Memory Café, Hadleigh to support their work of supporting families to live well with dementia.

Jerry invites you all to join him on this year’s walk. A new ½ mile distance has been added to this year’s walk to encourage families living with dementia to join the walk with their loved ones. There will be seats along the route to take a well-earned rest and a rest station at the 1/4mile turn around point. The other routes will be 1 mile, 3 miles and 5 miles. Whether you walk alone and make friends on the way, get a group of colleagues or friends together, belong to a club or community group, or want to get your school involved. Big Band Charity Dance raises £700 for ‘Upbeat’ The Big Band Charity dance at the Delphi Centre for “Upbeat” Heart Support for West Suffolk patients and their families was a great success. The event was themed to the 1940’s with music covering the 30s, 40s and 50s. The evening commenced at 7:30 with a ½ hour of music and sounds of the 1940’s played by our DJ “Snake Hips Steve” with a projection of still images of the period being shown on a large screen behind a simulation of a juke box.

Then right on queue the Vice Chairman Brian Richell with his wife Air Raid warning and the Ann being presented with the cheque from All Clear sirens sounded Phil & Jacqui Goodyer for the start of the music by “Swing Machine” a 17 piece big band from Ipswich lead by Bob Airzee with sounds of Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and many others.

Dancing the Waltz, Quickstep, Rumba and Cha Cha to a big band is something special. Swing Jiving is typical of the 1940’s and many of the attendees dressed in the styles of the period. The evening raised £700 for the “Upbeat” Charity which has a meeting place at the Old School in Long Melford.

The event was organised by “Dance with Us Suffolk” run by Philip and Jacqui Goodyer from Leavenheath, who would like to say a special thank you to the Sudbury Tourist Office for helping to sell the tickets. The “Swing Machine” will be returning to the Delphi Centre on Saturday 30th December for an end of year ART DECO themed Sparkle Party Night. Look out for details in the local press.

You will be aware that from September, the District Council will start to vacate its Headquarter offices in Hadleigh for a move in to Ipswich with other public sector organisations.

Whilst the move brings obvious benefits for our Council to work more closely with other Local Authorities and public health, locally the exit may be more acutely felt.

After many years in the Town, there will be local residents and businesses sad to see the departure of officers being based here. Leader of Babergh District Council, Jennie Jenkins told us “I do appreciate that people in Hadleigh will feel the change more than other communities who are not used to us being so obviously present in their area. However, wherever our administrative base is, Babergh District Council will continue to deliver high quality services to everyone, from its public realm work and building control through to bin collection and food safety inspections.”

Arthur Charvonia, joint Chief Executive of Babergh and Mid Suffolk Councils, told an audience of local town and parish councils recently, "With our move we will undoubtedly want to and need to work harder to connect with our communities and ensure that you see the benefits our efforts bring to the local area. We are not complacent in making sure we maintain relationships with the local people we are here to serve."

Just like other Councils, Babergh is investing more in bringing council services online for residents via the website www.babergh.gov.uk and reflects the fact that many people now expect to do business with their local council 24 hours a day. With hectic work and home lives, the times when people used to pop in to the local office to pay their rents are now well behind us and there is more focus on providing better online solutions. Of course, some of our questions are more complex and so the arrival of the new telephone number 0300 123 4000 this Spring has also brought benefits to residents.

Inevitably as the move dates approach, questions turn to what will become of the building on Corks Lane? This is something that the Council is working on with a design and planning team, testing the market to explore the possible options. As these develop, a sounding board involving officers Councillors and a representative of the Town Council will come together to share views and develop ideas. The Town Council has already been sharing community views with the District Council through a dedicated email address. A report will be presented in the Autumn to District Councillors with a recommended preferred option. As more details come through, we will share these through this newsletter and other channels.

Apart from delicious food, diners at the Secret Garden Café in Sudbury will find that they are surrounded by exquisite irises. Hot dry conditions are of no concern to these beautiful flowers as they have been skilfully captured on camera by professional photographer Clare Dawson. These particular species were originally developed by artist and plantsman Sir Cedric Morris. More recently, professional gardener and iris enthusiast, Sarah Cook, has worked tirelessly to find and grow as many of the Morris’ species as Sir Cedric Morris Iris possible. Sarah and Clare have collaborated on “Benton Nigel” this exhibition. The display coincides with the Hadleigh Festival of Gardening and Art which commemorates the life and work of Sir Cedric Morris who lived and worked for many years at Benton End in Hadleigh. The exhibition is in situ at the Secret Garden Café, until the end of August, Mon to Saturday 9 am to 5pm.

Sudbury Dramatic Society The next production to follow in a successful 2017 season from Sudbury Dramatic Society is Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s comedy The Rivals, which is on at Sudbury’s Quay Theatre from Tuesday 5th to Saturday 9th September at 7.45pm In Bath in 1775, the beautiful Lydia is living with her old aunt, Mrs Malaprop, a widow whose ability to mangle the English language is legendary. In a story full of mistaken and hidden identities, Lydia is determined to refuse an arranged marriage with Captain Jack Absolute, whom she has never met, and elope with the penniless Ensign Beverley. However, Ensign Beverley. is actually Jack Absolute who is courting Lydia in disguise Mrs Malaprop is encouraging another suitor to Lydia’s hand, who is persuaded to challenge the fictitious Beverley to a duel. As the course of true love never does run smooth, will everything end happily?

Sheridan wrote this comedy of manners, mocking eighteenth century conventions of romantic love, even as The Rivals follows the fortunes of the young lovers. Sudbury Mayor’s Report Since becoming Mayor of Sudbury in May it has been, to use a bit of a cliche, a rollercoaster of a time. Ive been feeling from nervous to excited, from scared to humbled - sometimes all those emotions in one day! To say I am honoured to serve Sudbury in this way is an understatement. I've already met some amazing new people and really feel that the 'heart' of our wonderful town is beating well and is happy and healthy. Of course there will always be issues and challenges to overcome, but Im confidant my colleagues and I will face them with gusto and enthusiasm, always putting Sudbury and it's residents at the core of our decisions.

I had the pleasure of opening Askew's Hair Salon. Not only a fabulous new premises for a long established and respected Sudbury business, but a wonderful refurbishment of one of the buildings destroyed by the fire in Friars St. Two very ancient walls have been saved and incorporated beautifully into the new building. I also was invited to open the new 50's diner at Mellish House. The staff and residents there were an inspiration, we had a wonderful afternoon there. At the West Suffolk College Achievement Dinner I was so impressed to see so many students from Sudbury being recognised for their brilliant success. I had the pleasure of attending Alice and Owen Diamond's Diamond Wedding Anniversary celebrations at Hanover Court. Chatting to their family, friends and staff it became apparent they are a truly amazing couple. The Taste of Sudbury this year was fabulous. The feedback I'm hearing is all positive and Im sure this event will just grow and grow. Well done to everyone involved. Suffolk Day was brilliant - what a great idea to champion our county in this way. I attended the inaugural event in Ipswich with many other mayors of Suffolk towns. I sung the praises of our great town to all who would listen. Then I popped back to the events in Sudbury. Again I'm sure this will grow and grow and become a regular date in our calendar to showcase Sudbury and Suffolk. We were treated to a perfect afternoon of songs from the silver screen at the Choral Society Summer concert. The only problem I had was trying to resist singing along to all the fabulous movie tunes!

It's been a joy helping our dedicated community wardens with the schools competition again this year, in it's tenth and biggest year! We should be so proud of all the schools in our town - the children did brilliantly and with nearly 1500 entries it was an epic task. Well done to everyone that took part, to our winners and to Daisy our first prize winner! I must thank Tesco for their continued support with this event, this year even donating a beautiful bike as one of the first prizes. There are many exciting things ahead this Summer at which point I must mention my Mayors Coffee Morning. This will be on 5th August at 10am - 12 noon in the Mayors Parlour. Thereafter the first Saturday morning of every month, come along for a tea, coffee, tasty homemade cakes and a chat. All the proceeds will go to my charities this year, The Kernos Centre, The Suffolk Befriending Scheme and The Richmond Fellowship. I'm very keen to support these charities all I can as they offer invaluable help, guidance and care to those of us suffering mental health issues and the issues that can surround loneliness, isolation or recovery from addiction. I'd love the Mayors Parlour to be packed on these days! I will make lots of cakes, so do come along if you can.

Hadleigh Hall in the Suffolk market town of Hadleigh has become the 29th care home under the ownership of Kingsley Healthcare Group.

The 54-bed home in Friars Road, on the edge of Hadleigh, will eventually create employment for more than 50 people. A substantial six-figure sum has been spent on refurbishing the 19th century property ahead of opening.

Kingsley’s operations director Debbie McGovern said: “We fell in love with the building as soon as we saw it. This is a wonderful location to offer 24-hour short and long-term nursing, residential and dementia care. “We have wonderful landscaped gardens and excellent views across rolling Suffolk countryside, and yet we are just on the edge of Hadleigh and only a short drive away from Ipswich and Sudbury.”

She stressed that it was a completely fresh start for the home under the new ownership of a renowned national provider. She said: “As a company we are passionate in our belief that older people should have the best possible quality of life. Providing first class care will be at the heart of everything we do at Hadleigh Hall. “Our staff treat residents as they would their own family and at all times respect the fact they are individuals with their own needs and preferences. “Our interest in our residents is genuine; we learn from listening, engaging and responding to feedback. Above all else, Hadleigh Hall is our residents’ home.”

Operations manager Helen Gosling, who led the development of Kingsley’s acclaimed person-centred approach to dementia care, called WINGS, said: “We are managing Hadleigh Hall in a very special way in that the focus of every member of staff, whatever their job, will be the social needs of the residents.”

She said in home manager, Emma Beckett, they had selected someone with vast experience in the care sector and, importantly, someone who shared Kingsley’s values. The home is currently recruiting for a range of positions including support workers and domestics.

Kingsley was established in 1999 by Daya Thayan and his wife Sumi with the purchase of their first care home in Lowestoft. Since then the family owned business has grown into a national provider employing 1,600 people and caring for more than 1,100 residents. The company passed an important milestone last summer when staff moved into their new head office, Kingsley House, in the centre of Lowestoft.

While planning continued national growth Mr Thayan insists on retaining Kingsley’s family values. “Every home we run must be of a standard that would fitting for my own parents,” he said.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk I was very honoured to be appointed a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Ministerial team at the Department of Health. Distilled, the role of PPS is basically to act as a conduit between a government department and parliamentary colleagues. In practice this means that I will be supporting the health ministers in their day-to-day work by attending debates, statements and urgent questions, and also ensuring that they are aware of the feeling in the House of Commons and concerns individual MPs may have. If individual members are concerned about certain matters either locally or nationally, or would like assistance in gaining attention for a particular campaign, it is the role of the PPS to enable that communication.

For regular watchers of the Parliament channel – and I know there are some – the PPS usually sits behind the Minister they are supporting and can often be seen scampering across the green benches to send or receive notes to and from Departmental officials seated near the Speaker’s chair. A PPS is an unpaid role, though intriguingly we are classed as being on the Government ‘payroll’. Commentators sometimes use the phrase ‘payroll vote’ which refers to all Ministers, Whips and PPSs who are in one way or another part of the Government (as opposed to ‘backbenchers’).

I am delighted to have been assigned to the Department of Health because there is almost no bigger issue than the future of healthcare in the UK. I am looking forward to getting more involved in this area and developing a greater understanding about the challenges faced by the fantastic staff in our NHS. Of course, I will continue to be the Member of Parliament of South Suffolk. I will still hold surgeries, stand up for local interests and work on my various projects and priorities. My first duty remains to represent you in Parliament, but it’s exciting to have new challenges to go with that core responsibility.

The boats are crewed by our fully trained volunteers with buoyancy aids provided for all child passengers.

Proceeds of the event go to the River Stour Trust, a registered charity (No. 257806), seeking to restore and conserve the River Stour Navigation for the benefit of all.

Popstars Beyonce and Jay-Z have recently announced the name of their twins, Sir Carter and Rumi. Whilst not the most common names, they are far from being contenders for the most unusual names celebrities have chosen for their children in recent years. This most recent announcement makes me wonder though, what is in a name? Looking at a 2016 Family Law case regarding the names given to a pair of twins by a mother in the UK (Re C [Children]); a local authority brought proceedings against a mother to prohibit her from naming her children "Cyanide" and "Preacher". The mother appealed and the Court of Appeal was required to determine whether the court had power to prevent a parent from registering a child's forename of his or her own choice. The first Judge that considered the matter declared the court should prohibit the mother from exercising her parental responsibility and registering the forenames Cyanide and Preacher.

When the Court of Appeal considered the case it was also satisfied that the court had such power to prevent a parent giving their child a specific name but this power should only be exercised in the most extreme cases and only with the sanction of a High Court Judge.

In this case, the name Cyanide gave the court reasonable cause to believe that the little girl was likely to suffer significant or emotional harm. The Judge considered that the consequences of the mother's decision was so profound that the court should intervene and protect the girl twin from the emotional harm that it was satisfied she would suffer if called Cyanide. The court did not consider that being called Preacher would in itself be likely to cause the boy significant harm. However, was concerned about possible harm to the girl twin who would inevitably discover that her birth mother decided to call her Cyanide after a notorious poison, whilst her twin brother was given the name of a respected member of society, Preacher.

It would appear, therefore, that the court are concerned if a parent wishes to call their child a name if it is satisfied that the effect of this could cause significant emotional harm to that child.

East Anglian Garden Group The summer social was held in the beautiful gardens of Stoke Priory on a rather damp evening, where our host and hostess, Henry and Victoria Englehart very kindly welcomed us into their home, to shelter from the rain, to eat our supper! The gardens are set in rolling countryside, with wonderful views. Members enjoyed walking through the gardens, and the greenhouse, which housed a host of interesting specimens, some of them planted by Henry’s mother many years ago.

Our visit to Cobbs Hall, Great Saxham on 15th July was thankfully, a sunny day. Dr Soper has spent over 30 years creating his garden, where there are two acres of lawns with colourful herbaceous borders, many ornamental trees, large fish and lily ponds. He built a ruined folly, overgrown with rambling roses, and a parterre. The walled kitchen garden was burgeoning with fruit and vegetables, with cucumbers and melons climbing high in the greenhouse.

Afterwards we went on to Paugers Nursery at Depden, which is inspirational to visit, as they also have a garden where their plants are shown to great advantage. It is impossible to leave without fully loading ones car with lots of exciting new plants.

Apart from the garden holiday in September, we have finished our visits for the summer. Talks at Hitcham village hall resume in the autumn, and next month I will give you a list of forthcoming speakers for the new season. Online survey aims to obtain ideas and opinions from local people on the events held in the town centre landmark People living in and near Sudbury are being asked to complete a short survey to give their views on St Peter’s and what types of events they would like to see held inside the historic building.

St Peter's in Sudbury town centre, which attracts around 60,000 visitors every year, is one of the most used redundant churches in the UK and is established as a hub for events in Sudbury including markets, exhibitions, and a wide range of concerts. But the Friends of St Peter’s (FoSP), a voluntary group who look after the venue, want to expand the programme of events to appeal to a wider audience including families and young people. The group has been awarded a grant from Heritage Lottery Fund’s Sharing Heritage programme to develop the venue's appeal to people of all ages and interests.

The first step is an online survey designed to gather ideas and opinions from the local community. He added: "We really feel that St Peter's, with its location and capacity, has the potential to be a yet more important asset to Sudbury and surrounding areas. We want to make St Peter's a venue that is open and appealing to all, bridging divides in age, culture and tastes.

“But we can only do that if a whole range of people, especially those who don't often use St Peter's currently, can tell us what they want from it. “This survey gives everyone a voice in the future of St Peter's”.

Fund Raiser for Internal Refurbishment of Delphi Centre With a view to making improvement to the décor at The Delphi Centre the User Group will be running a August Bank Holiday Monday Car Boot on 28th August 7:00am – 12:30pm.

The centre is being used by more groups than ever before from dancing classes including Ballroom, Latin, Swing Jive and Country to exercise classes, table tennis and special events such as Fashion shows and of course the venue is ideal for large weddings.

But internally the venue has not had any update for many years so the user group are arranging a number of fund raising events to make improvements.

The first of these is a Car Boot, the pitch price will be £7:00 for cars only, (No Vans, or Traders) and an entrance of £0.50p for adults. Refreshments and toilets on site. No booking required so please come along either as a seller or buyer and support this fund raiser for this excellent community asset.

Dangers of illegal tobacco to be highlighted by Suffolk Trading Standards and Suffolk Public Health Suffolk Trading Standards and Suffolk Public Health will be highlighting the dangers of illegal tobacco this week. An Illegal Tobacco Unit will be travelling to three Suffolk towns to raise awareness of the dangers of illegal tobacco, while providing advice and information on how to spot and report it. Members of the public will have the opportunity to see the sniffer dogs in action, demonstrating the skills used to help Trading Standards detect tobacco that has been hidden. Anyone who is aware of a premise believed to be selling illegal tobacco or cigarettes can report it in confidence to an officer at any of the roadshows or by contacting Trading Standards on 0345 4040 506.

County plans to loan University of Suffolk up to ÂŁ5m Plans to give the University of Suffolk a loan up to ÂŁ5m go before county councillors next week. The loan is to help the growth of the Ipswich-based university, which was established as independent of the University of East Anglia in August last year. Suffolk County Council's cabinet on 11 July was recommended to back the loan. A report to the council says the university argues that the loan will allow it to expand and help encourage more people into higher education and reduce the flow of graduates out of Suffolk Changes to Ipswich Park and Ride Changes to Ipswich's Park and Ride service came into force on 3rd July. First Eastern Counties has taken over the contract from Ipswich Buses Suffolk County Council originally planned to a make radical changes to Park and Ride with the loss of a dedicated service. But that idea was shelved and First Eastern Counties will take over all responsibility and operate without a subsidy.

The only funding from the council will be ÂŁ200,000 a year for the running of the two car parks at London Road and Martlesham. First Eastern Counties says it's confident of increasing usage with changes to fares. But the frequency will be reduced from every 12 minutes to every 15 minutes.

River Stour Trust Coracle Regatta Saturday 5 August 2017 at Bures Recreation Ground This event is held annually usually on the first Saturday in August. This event has a fancy name but is in fact a FREE, low-key, laid back, fun afternoon.

Organised by coracle owners with support from the River Stour Trust to offer everyone an opportunity to try to handle one of these unusual craft.

The ‘coraclers’ not only share their craft but spend time explaining the best way of moving along the river. If you own a coracle but would prefer not to share it just bring it along and join in the fun. People of all ages can have a go and some get wet! Life jackets are available and there are safety boats on hand.

Spectators are kept entertained throughout the afternoon by races such as the ‘Poachers Run’. Camping for coraclers is available at Rushbanks Farm, Wissington. Proceeds of the event go to the River Stour Trust, a registered charity (No. 257806), seeking to restore and conserve the River Stour Navigation for the benefit of all.

Here you are in August already, but I’m writing in July before our Open Day which I’ll tell you about in September. Confused? That’s nothing! I found Mum in the kitchen with a sink full of water recently, not washing up but encouraging a gosling to swim. The poor little mite had splayed legs and Mum was supervising his hydrotherapy. I was about to ask Henry to buy her a plastic duck!

What a wonderful time we had in Long Melford last month. Our book stall made £65 at the Vintage Rally, Melford Hall and many admired the little Morris car belonging to our stalwart volunteers, Peter and Val Gutteridge. The following weekend we were completely overwhelmed by the number of visitors at our stalls on the Long Melford Street Fair. Over £700 was raised for SESAW. Congratulations to the organisers of both events, even the weather was good!

Like many of you, some of our volunteers are on holiday so SESAW will be closed during August. It will also help us settle down again after all the Open Day excitement. If you venture in Essex, look out for us at the Beth Chatto Gardens Wildlife Fair, Elmstead Market, CO7 7DB on 22nd and 23rd August.

Our only event this month is Barbara’s Bonanza Sale, Parish Rooms, Stratford St. Mary, CO7 6JH, 10-2pm on 19th August. The kind villagers always donate quality items including a big dictionary which I’m reading. According to this font of knowledge, apart from being the eighth month, august also means “inspiring reverence or admiration”. Surely that must be a reference to me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua!

“As government expands, liberty contracts” Reagan So Councillor Nigel Bennett and his fellow members of Sudbury Town Council’s planning Committee have recommended acceptance of the proposals to erect up to a further 1050 new homes at Chilton. Apparently under local government procedure they had little choice. “Cart before the Horse” comes to mind. Am I the only one to believe that our present infrastructure cannot support such a massive population and vehicle increase? Without at least a by-pass, road and roundabout improvements and a rejuvenation of our town centre this scheme is doomed by adding further chaos to our already overstretched public services. No local law courts, no hospital, an invisible police presence, pot holed streets and waiting lists for local surgeries. One councillor informed me that once the homes are built a by-pass and those other services will inevitably follow. Would you trust Whitehall or Suffolk CC with that one? Our Councillors, Suffolk, Babergh, Sudbury and our MP should tell their political masters “No more housing or co-operation until Sudbury’s needs are met and a by-pass is started”. However, to a man or woman, they will just follow procedure and vote at their party’s call. To be fair Nigel and a minority of local councillors suggested such a united front a few years ago but were voted down by the party faithful.

Sussex Police, faced with £35 million worth of cuts (but not to pensions) have just splashed out £1500 to redecorate two police cars with Gay Pride symbols.

Even the local Gay Community are disgusted at such a waste of public funds.

And from their elected Police Commissioner not a word of censure. So what good are these, very expensive, public appointees to society? Our Local Police Authorities, equally pointless, were disbanded in 2012 and replaced by Police and Crime Commissioners, nominated (of course) by the political establishment and voted in by the 15% of the population who bother to support this farce. Our own Suffolk Commissioner Tim Passmore, seemingly a decent enough cove paid £70k. He is supported by an Executive including a Monitoring Officer, £102,777 a year, a Deputy (does he have a badge?) £77,082, Finance Officer £64,375, Business Manager £56,664 plus many others with the attendant perks and enhanced pensions. How many local police officers would that finance? He did however promise to deliver, and I quote, “A greater visibility of front line policing”. The bloated public sector must not be trusted to manage itself. Appoint one and you will see his pointless empire grow to the cost of us, the poor bloody rate payer, whilst our elected County Councillors have not the guts to rock the boat. Like lighthouses in a peat bog, brilliant but pointless! However, its our money they are wasting.

Prolog has been granted permission to convert their North Street offices to over thirty flats. Although possibly the town’s ugliest building with its brutalist Stalinist architecture it did offer employment to many. I also found them to be good neighbours. However, with maximum parking for one car per flat I foresee the area at the end of the street becoming one unregulated car park which will be detrimental to the town’s blood donors accessing the Masonic Hall. Also with regard to that company I see that the old chestnut regarding their planning application failure for gigantic warehousing at Chilton being stated as their justification of leaving Sudbury for the Midlands. Councillors decried the loss of 450 jobs that the warehousing would have created. Are they in the real world?

Current automated warehousing systems would not require such staffing, ask Amazon or any large distribution company. The gullibility of local politicians is beyond belief. The staff numbers stated by Prolog to gain planning permission was accepted by Babergh councillors without question. Therefore their judgement is somewhat suspect.

Britain now faces yet a further public enquiry. However, again only necessitated by the inability of our successive governments to rule and keep our public sector in check. In the 1970s and 80s contaminated blood was given to many and some 2,400 people died. Shamefully it needed campaigner Diana Johnson MP to call for an emergency parliamentary debate for the government to finally concede that there had been a tragedy, possibly with criminal intent, and that action, some 40 years late, must finally be taken. A parliamentary report found that at least 7,500 people had been infected by imported tainted blood from the USA. Surely by now the police must be aware of the identities of the importers and the civil servants who authorised payment. After so many years those so infected should be given an open and above all quick outcome, the answers must be in the public realm. And, of highest import, criminal charges must be brought. Its enough to drive one to drink!

Discovering the roots of a big hitting victorian batsman The discovery of a tankard presented to a cricketer more than a century ago has led to the uncovering of 300 years of his family’s history. Farmer William “Slogger” Hart was a big hitting batsman, but nearing the end of his cricketing career when marrying for the first time at the age of 45. His fellow members of Sudbury Cricket Club marked the occasion by giving him a sold silver tankard, which has recently returned to the club’s ownership.

Initial inquiries into the life of William Allen Hart revealed his association with life in the Boxford area, the home of cricket club supporter Roger Prosser. Having written an extensive document based on the genealogy of his own family, he decided to investigate the life of Hart – and finished up delving back to 1701.

The family line stretched as far away as Scotland and Ireland, and is now all included in a 32-page book written by Roger and published by the cricket club.

Hart’s career as a Sudbury cricketer, and his family background which led him to leave Scotland as a young man to help his uncle farm at Edwardstone, are covered in the publication now on sale through the club for £5.

Roger has also traced Hart’s surviving family, with particular help coming from his great grandson now living in Spain.

The author admits the publication is considerably larger than was imagined when he started his investigations, which included the discovery that Hart was also an inventor, having patented the design for a paddle boat in 1902.

Roger added: “I confess the outcome of the urge to know more of the history of a simple tankard has exceeded the imagination of the cricket club’s original expectations, but once started, a trail has to be followed!”

Club chairman, Louis Brooks, added: “The club has produced a number of significant works on its history in recent times, and Roger Prosser’s work represents an important addition to our previous knowledge.”

Little Waldingfield Sale Trail There will be a sale trail around the village, along with some tables in the Parish Room (the village hall in Church Road), on Saturday August 12 between 10am and 1pm; all are invited to come along and hunt out those bargains. Maps and refreshments will be available in the Parish Room.

Sudbury Community Depot opening in September Sudbury Community Depot, an exciting new community project, will be starting at The Christopher Centre in September 2017.
