Sudbury Carnival a great success!

If you were about in Sudbury on Sunday 19 August you might have been wondering what the noise was all about, why diversions were in place and if the town had indeed been taken over by pirates. The Sudbury Carnival celebrated all things happy!! It certainly was an event that put Sudbury on the map as a town that celebrates community and one that shares homegrown values. Sudbury is a community with a commitment to connecting people, sharing time and having fun. The Carnival was a testament to that!! Much respect and thanks to the team behind the scenes who made it all possible.

Free hearing checks in Sudbury to help those with hearing loss Ten million people in the UK - one in six of us - have some degree of hearing loss. It’s surprisingly tricky to spot gradual hearing loss as our brains are very good at compensating, so we’re not even aware of how much we’ve lost until things are quite far advanced.

The good news is that there are things you can do about it. The bad news is that there are potentially serious consequences if you choose to ignore hearing loss, including an increased risk of dementia.

Local hearing care specialist The Hearing Care Centre offers award winning hearing care services from 25 centres across East Anglia. This year they are celebrating their 20th year in business and they hope to continue to raise awareness about the prevalence of hearing loss, its effect on everyday life and the potential dangers of leaving hearing loss untreated.

Audiologist Karen Finch and her team will be holding a free ‘Hearing Care Centre Open Day’ at their local hearing clinic at Sudbury Community Health Centre between 9am and 5pm on Friday 14th September 2018. During the event they will be providing complimentary hearing assessments (usually £20), along with the very best professional advice about your hearing test results and discussions about possible solutions that could help improve your hearing. All services are available by appointment only.

News From Sudbury Rotary The traditional handover from one Rotary President to another took place at the end of June, when President Lesley Ford-Platt passed on the badge of office to her husband Tony Platt -possibly the first occasion when a husband and wife team have followed each other in the role of Club President.

Music at the handover was provided by a jazz duo, Robert and Terry, who added a relaxed atmosphere to the day’s events, which started with a welcoming glass of Pimms.

As we leave behind July, members and their friends will have enjoyed their annual ‘outing’ for lunch at Sudbury Cricket Club, and also visited the Learning Bus at Pot Kiln School, which Rotary members helped fund.

This special place creates an additional classroom and ‘nurture’ space.

A visit from the District Governor, David Simpson, will take place on 6 August, and a tea party is planned on 18 August at the home of Rtn Brian Tora and his wife Elizabeth in Little Waldingfield.

Past President Lesley is looking forward to being able to handover funds raised during her year in office to local charities, Compassion (supporting the victims of domestic abuse) and the Kernos Counselling Centre.

Rotary is open to people from all backgrounds and we would welcome more of you to join us. Unlike the image which you might have of your local Rotarians, we are not a group of serious, professional, older gentlemen in suits(!), but a mix of women and men of all ages and interests. The one thing which brings us together is our wish to support our community, here and through overseas projects, and to enjoy fun and friendship while doing so. Our weekly lunches, on Mondays at the Mill Hotel, give an opportunity for us to hear from speakers on topics of interest, follow up on matters concerned with our local activities, and to enjoy each other’s company.

Richard celebrates 30 years at SEH BAC Long-serving employee Richard Rowe is celebrating 30 years at Ipswich-based home improvement ďŹ rm SEH BAC – and in that time he has seen the awardwinning company grow from humble beginnings into one of the UK’s top installers.

The keen golfer and lifelong DIYer, who is currently a Technical Manager in the Conservatory Department, joined SEH Windows and Doors Ltd, as the company was then known, as a window and door surveyor in 1988.

Richard explained: “After joining, I soon progressed to Installation Manager, before I was promoted to Operations Manager. I then decided on a career change in 2005 and became Technical Manager responsible for IT, HR, Investors in People and Health and Safety. “When the ďŹ nancial crisis hit in 2008 I changed back to a conservatory surveyor. Then, after a couple of years, this changed again to Technical Manager in charge of conservatories and now I work part-time and ďŹ ll in the gaps in the technical department for conservatories.â€?

While Richard has had a varied career at SEH BAC, he has also seen ďŹ rsthand how the company has grown over the decades.

Richard explained: “From starting in small premises in Woodbridge Road, Ipswich, to now having 15 high-class show centres across the whole of the South East of England, the company has always grown and expanded steadily over the years and put quality of work as the main goal. We know that customers are very willing to pay just that bit more for this service.�

And with 30 years behind him, Richard is also perfectly placed to assess the changes in the industry: “The core window replacement industry has not changed too much over the years except that legislation has greatly increased and products have got more sophisticated. One major new product that has been introduced is the Bi-fold door and this has brought about a great deal of extra contracts, often involving large lintel works. “The conservatory market, however, has enjoyed a massive change and has evolved from simple glazed boxes on the rear of houses, into impressive permanent structures that are more in line with traditional extensions. Structural steelwork has increased within the fabric of the structures enabling modern buildings to be designed with orangery type glazed roof lanterns to be added.�

When not working, Richard has his hands full all year round trying to keep his ďŹ ve grandchildren and four grandchildren inherited from his two daughter’s partners in check. But, he has managed to keep a work/life balance over the past 30 years and has thoroughly enjoyed working at SEH BAC. “SEH BAC has a very relaxed attitude to work within the ofďŹ ce area but a very professional and caring attitude is given to all customers. Our directors have invested in critical software programs that, in the main, really work and assist work practices. Staff are generally left to work out the best solutions with just ďŹ nal direction taken by senior personnel.â€?

Save Our Skylark Fields Update (ďŹ ghting a housing application for 150 homes on arable farming land, off Station Road, Long Melford) On 15th June we held our SOS quiz in the Village Hall and the evening was a great success. Tim & Andrea Blackburn did an amazing job in hosting the event and we had a full house with more than 140 quizzers. We raised a whopping ÂŁ1,053 on the evening and I would like to personally thank everyone that participated and helped to make it a fun night.

On 1st July we had an SOS stall at The Street Fair – under sweltering conditions we sold our new 2019 photographic Melford calendar as well as selling cakes. Mark Ford cycled more than 78 km and Mandy Poulson raised funds with a “Find the Skylark Nestâ€? game. We raised ÂŁ824 on the day which is just brilliant and we know we have a lot of support from the village.

Calendars are available to purchase from the Parish Council ofďŹ ces and Looking Good, Feeling Better. We will also be selling them outside the Co-Op over the next few months. The calendars, with photos from local residents, are ÂŁ6 each or 2 for ÂŁ10.

Our next Fundraising events are a Table & Craft Sale at the Old School on Sunday 23rd September and we are running a Race Night on 28th September at the Village Hall.

Mark Ford made an appearance on BBC Look East a couple of weeks ago and raised awareness about our Skylark ďŹ eld and the housing application. The date of the hearing is yet to be conďŹ rmed but we have been informed it won’t be earlier than 22nd August.

She was featured at the Pizza Express Steinway 2 - Piano Festival in 2010, 2011 and 2013 (with Robin Aspland and Nikki Iles respectively), with two of the concerts being broadcast on Radio 3 ‘s Jazz Line Up. Oli Hayhurst has been one of the busiest bass players on the London jazz scene since graduating from the Royal Academy of Music in 2000 He is involved in a wide range of music playing with stars of jazz, classical and world musics. He has been featured on over 60 albums and toured extensively. He is a firm Fleece Jazz favourite.

David Ingamells was born in 1990 and started to play the drum kit at the age of seven. In 2009 he was awarded a place to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Martin Hathaway, Scott Stroman and Malcolm Edmonstone. He is currently a Fellow of the Guildhall School. Whilst at the Guildhall, David had the opportunity to play with the Southbank Sinfonia, as well as being involved in several projects featuring musicians such as Mike Gibbs and Nikki Iles. He graduated from the Guildhall in 2013 with a First Class Honours and was awarded both the Chartered Surveyors’ Prize and the Yahama Jazz Scholarship in the same year. In addition to concert venues such as Queen Elizabeth Hall, Barbican Hall and St. John’s, Smith Square. Will Bartlett read music at St. Peter’s college, Oxford, specialising in composition and musical analysis as well as directing the Oxford University jazz orchestra. Since then he has worked as a pianist, educator and composer/arranger with names including Stan Sulzmann, Norman Winstone, Claire Martin and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra.

Sam Dunn is a jazz guitarist based in Yorkshire. His playing can be described as ‘Contemporary in language and style but strongly influenced by the history of jazz and the guitar. Recent work has seen him playing with fellow guitarist Howard Alden and performing at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London.

Chris Draper grew up as a multi-instrumentalist specialising in both Jazz Trumpet and Classical Percussion studying at The Purcell School of Music and Royal Academy of Music. Known in the UK and abroad as a versatile musician, his credits include The Ronnie Scott’s All Stars, Mica Paris, Clare Teal, Kyle Eastwood and Soweto Kinch.

Once again the issue of business rates, and the future of our high street, has come to the fore in local and national politics over the summer. High profile retailers have hovered on the brink of extinction (e.g. House of Fraser); locally, we have seen the closure of post offices and bank branches, most notably Barclays in Hadleigh. And yet, at the same time we have heard that the globe’s Godzilla retailer, Amazon, saw its corporation tax bill fall from £7.2m in 2016 to just £4.6m last year despite its operating profit trebling to nearly £80m.

Of course, mentioning Amazon highlights perhaps the most significant factor in the changing shape of our high streets: the rise of internet shopping. In November 2007 just 4% of UK retail sales were online, yet a decade later, this figure reached a peak of nearly 20%.

It’s therefore easy to understand why ‘traditional’ retailers, i.e. those with a public facing premises, should feel frustration at paying out business rates – that can appear to bear no relation to turnover or profitability – when major online businesses worth billions pay comparatively little. I have huge sympathy with this view. Yes, the digital age has brought massive benefits as well as challenges, and we should not legislate to unwind technology that cannot be unwound. And let us not forget that for every struggling shop will be many more online firms created in bedrooms or trading with one or two staff working on a shoestring to build a new business that, if successful, will create further wealth and employment.

Nevertheless, I was delighted when the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, announced earlier in August that he was considering a so called ‘Amazon’ tax. He specifically said: “we want to ensure that taxation is fair between businesses doing business the traditional way and those doing business online”.

I share that sentiment of fairness – with one further caveat. We can implement all the tax changes on earth, and complain whenever premises become vacant, but our pubs and high street shops will only stay open if you and I actually use them.

East Anglian Garden Group We have spent a busy summer on our various garden visits. The first in May, to the magnificent Stody Gardens outside Holt, where, on a very cold day, we were overwhelmed by the sight of over 2000 specimens of Rhododendrons and Azaleas in full bloom. The colours were reflected in the numerous pools and streams in the water gardens. By the house, the formal borders were a riot of clashing colours, a real feast for the senses and absolutely glorious. In June we headed for Tom Stuart-Smith’s garden at Serge Hill in Hertfordshire. We were welcomed by Tom’s sister who looks after their mother’s house and densely planted borders and walled garden.

This has been established by generations of the family and had a classic walled garden, with scrambling climbers, roses and herbaceous plantings, all in full bloom. Tom’s garden was equally fascinating, incorporating an installation of one of his Chelsea gardens in a sunken courtyard by his home. Behind this we enjoyed exploring many hidden borders and corners in a more formal design, before viewing the newly established Prairie Garden, all flowing beautifully into the surrounding landscape.

Bells Return to All Saints Church, Little Cornard On September 25, John Taylor’s Foundry will begin work on installing the new bell frame at All Saints Church, Little Cornard, ready to hang the restored bells. The bells will be delivered on Friday 28 September, in readiness for a Service of Blessing to be conducted by the Right Rev. Martin Seeley, Diocesan Bishop, at 3.00 p.m. on Sunday 30 September.

Invitations to this Service have been sent to all those who supported the Bell Restoration project, which raised £130,000 to complete the work.

During the Service the bells will be standing on the floor near the tower, so that they can all be seen by the congregation. This will mark a major milestone in the project to restore the five ancient bells and add a new sixth bell (a treble). During October work will continue on the new bell frame and the bells will gradually be hung in place, in readiness for ringing to commemorate the Armistice which marked the end of the first World War, on 11 November. The oldest bell dates from 1399 and the ‘youngest’ from 1712. The total weight of the five bells is almost 26 hundredweight. Each of the original bells has been restored and re-tuned. The new treble, cast in February 2018, weighs about 3.5 hundredweight and is 2 feet in diameter.

A Service of Dedication will take place on Saturday 1 December, led by the Rt Rev. Dr Mike Harrison, Bishop of Dunwich. Supporters of the bells project are being invited to also attend that Service of Celebration to mark the completion of this ambitious project, led by a small group of volunteers and completed within three years. After so many hours of organising a variety of fund-raising events, preparing refreshments and wondering if their ambitious plans would be achieved, those volunteers and local residents will be able to enjoy the sound of the bells pealing regularly from the restored tower, to call people to Services at this ancient and attractive little Church, set on a hillside above the Stour Valley.

At the end of June we celebrated our 50th Anniversary with a delicious buffet meal in the beautiful gardens of Parham Hall, opened especially for us by kind permission of the owners Adam and Sue Paul. Sue gave us an introduction to the history and current management of the garden, before she and Adam showed us round the crinkle-crankle walled kitchen garden, encompassing a wide variety of fruit trees, and well-tended vegetables.

The hall is surrounded by landscaped grounds, all of which is tended by the owners, without extra help, quite a feat! We have an extra visit planned to the Salutation Gardens on the 5th September, and bookings are now being taken for that. Autumn meetings begin again on October 6th at the Chamberlin Hall, with Val Bourne and her talk ‘Peonies and Roses – A Marriage Made in Heaven’. Despite a chaotic few days before the event, everyone seemed to enjoy our Open Day and Fun Dog Show. After a storm left a trail of devastation on the Friday night, our fantastic team rallied at silly o’clock on Sunday morning and restored order ready for the visitors’ arrival at midday.

Although a little wet, it was a happy day with lots of laughs as volunteers hung onto legs and roofs while others made running repairs to the billowing gazebos! Most importantly, many animals were rehomed but more are coming in so if you are looking for a pet to complete your family, please visit us when we reopen in September.

Mum is still looking after injured and orphaned wildlife including a baby duckling that arrived recently. Those bad mannered seagulls that gave me a peck are now living in an outside pen (best place for them in my opinion!) until they are old enough to be released.

Business community gets behind d growing campaign supporting people with their emotional-well being A number of local businesses have offered their support to a growing campaign aimed at encouraging people to talk about their problems.

The Just Talk Campaign, which received official charitable status in 2017, offers support to people needing help with their emotional well-being. It was launched by leading psychotherapist Glenda D Roberts and counsellor Sharon Kendall in 2016 following a number of suicides in the Sudbury area.

The Just Talk Campaign holds free monthly drop-in sessions where people can discuss any problem they may have in confidence without needing to book an appointment. The campaign also offers affordable one-to-one counselling services.

The charity has already helped many local people, some who were suicidal, to cope with their problems.

Now, more and more local businesses are supporting the campaign by becoming official sponsors. Official sponsors of the campaign include Kingfisher HR, ASR Limited, Silver Monkey Marketing, The Sticker Factory, AAA Cabs, Patrick Lowman PR, The Prince of Wales Pub and Exploring U Counselling.

Ms Roberts, said: “The campaign just continues to grow with more and more local people seeking our help. As we grow it is so important we get continued support from the community and we are very grateful to the businesses that are supporting the campaign. Together we are making a huge difference to the lives of many local people who are no longer suffering alone.

“The businesses are helping us in various ways, some are raising funds, some are making cash donations, others are providing marketing support and generally helping us with our awareness raising events and activities. We hope more local businesses will come forward to support us so we can help even more people who may be suffering or struggling to cope.”

Bellydanza is a dance group which runs classes for all abilities in Sudbury and Earls Colne. Bellydance is very strengthening exercise and is also great fun.

Colliers help to pave the way for Capel St Mary’s first ever war memorial Unlike many other Suffolk towns and villages Capel St Mary does not have a memorial to commemorate those in its communities who died in the two world wars of the last century. The village would have had a memorial to men from the village who lost their lives serving their country but the money collected for it back in the 1920s was given instead to the old Ipswich Hospital to help fund treatment for the wounded.

Now fittingly, 100 years after the end of the First World War, Capel St Mary’s first ever war memorial will be officially unveiled on the 11th November. Work is on-going but until the Dedication in November, the monument and memorial garden will be enclosed in boarding painted with murals by East Bergholt High School students. The war memorial has been a project which has energised the local community and beyond, to engage in a number of fundraising activities, all under the guidance of Capel St Mary War Memorial Fund and its Chairman Group Captain Gary Bunkell.

Collier & Catchpole is one of the local businesses to lend its support by donating the paving slabs to be used as part of the landscaping project for the memorial. It is not the first memorial in which this independent builders’ merchant has been involved.

Back in 2013, Collier & Catchpole donated the materials for a monument on the Ipswich Road, Colchester to commemorate the crew of a Lancaster bomber which crashed as it tried an emergency landing at Boxted Airfield in 1944. Managing Director Tim Rowbottom explains why these projects are so important: “We are a family firm with roots in East Anglia, going back almost 200 years. As a business, it is a strong sense of community which sets us apart from other merchants. We recognise the importance of this and are happy to lend our strength, which is being a supplier of the best quality building materials, to key local community projects.”

Wickham St Pauls Fun Dog Show This year sees the 10th Annual Fun Dog Show on the Wickham St Paul’s Village Green. The past few years’ events have been visited by some of the well-known four-legged characters of the area, and even a few local celebrities! Everyone has left happy with tails wagging, rosettes chewed and far too many sausages eaten (once there was a year’s supply!). With Tea and Cake supplied by the WI, a BBQ and Bar, the owners all left happy too. We aim to create a fun family-friendly event, and with some brand new play equipment installed on the green, the children can be entertained as well.

This year is extra special as we are not only raising money for our village church, but also Guide Dogs for the Blind, who will be with us on the day, so you can see where your donation goes.

Sudbury Regatta Sudbury Rowing Club held their Annual Regatta on Saturday with crews travelling far and wide to compete. Although entries were slightly down on previous years, the day was packed with exciting races in all categories from juniors to veterans, single sculls to sprint eights. There were also four adaptive rowers including Sudbury members Luke Payne and Sophie Brown who competed in the same category as adaptive scullers from Marlow and Twickenham who are trialling for the GB para-Olympic team. The 650 metre course always proves a challenge to visiting crews and sometimes even the most accomplished crews get caught out by the bend. Sudbury crews included a mixed Junior eight, men’s veteran eight, men’s four, ladies veteran four, men’s double, junior doubles, and various single sculls. Winning crews were Martha Bullen (Women’s Junior 15 single), Byron Bullen (men’s junior 17 singles), Amelia Maskell and Amelia Moule (Women’s junior 17 double), Gareth Moriarty and Amelia Maskell (mixed double), Harry Moule and Antony Moule (parent and child race), Amelia Moule, Amelia Maskell, Freya Evans, Helena Griffiths and Harry Moule (cox) ( Women’s Junior 17 coxed quad), Jen Ward and Sophie Lovegrove (Women’s doubles), Jen Titterington and Martha Bullen (Women’s doubles), Byron Bullen and Ben MacKenzie (Peterborough) (men’s Junior 18 doubles).

Norman Tebbit was an MP from 1970 – 1991, having served as a BOAC pilot/navigator before that. He held many offices while an MP, including Parliamentary-under-Secretary of State for Trade 1979; Minister of State for Industry 1981; Secretary of State for Employment 1981; Secretary for Trade and Industry 1983; Chancellor Duchy of Lancaster and Chairman of Conservative Party 1985-1987. He was a member of Margaret Thatcher’s Cabinet.

Many of us will remember that he was severely injured in the IRA bombing of the Grand Hotel, Brighton in 1984. He was awarded the Companion of Honour in 1987 and entered the House of Lords in 1992.

We are delighted that Norman Tebbit has agreed to this ‘Parkinsonstyle’ interview. We will be asking him about his public life and his life in Suffolk. There will be an opportunity for questions.

For attendees, it gives the opportunity to increase confidence, teamwork and social interaction, develop routines, self-reliance and a sense of achievement. Crucially, it can play an important role in the development and maintenance of mental and physical wellbeing and a sense of connection.

As a parent carer herself, Vanessa believes strongly that increasing the provision of good quality respite care in the county can only benefit the community in terms of choice, access and regularity, “Respite on a regular basis is also vital, for those caring for and supporting family members with additional needs. As parents increase in age the needs of a dependent with additional needs can stay the same or most probably increase. Access to facilities that can provide regular breaks as well as emergency respite care, is a vital link in the chain of sustaining the wellbeing of the whole family.”

Public consultation is vital in the next stage of the funding process.

“In order to move forward we require statistics to support the need for such a provision. It is our understanding that there is a waiting list for respite in the local area. There appears to be provision for the under 25s. However, those above this age bracket are not always offered the choice of respite that suits their needs or celebrates their interests or abilities. We hope that our respite facility and activity centre will offer a fresh and much needed colourful addition to respite provision locally.”

The Phoenix Collective The much loved and supported Phoenix Players at the Quay Theatre in Sudbury continues this September under a new name and a new director. Rachel Bennett who has had a career in inclusive theatre for over 20 years, promises to work hard to build on the strengths and friendships that the current group offers. The Phoenix Collective will take place on Fridays at the Jetty down at the Quay and begin on 21st September from 4.15/6.15pm “I am very excited to be given this opportunity to work within the Sudbury community to provide inclusive, fun and engaging theatre experiences for all. Theatre is very much a process and whilst we may celebrate our success at the end with a show, along the way it can provide very real opportunities to develop in many areas including confidence, creativity, teamwork, communication and life skills.”

The group celebrates all abilities and whilst experience is not necessary, enthusiasm is !! If you’ve never tried drama before but fancy a go contact us for further information. Whatever your different needs are they are not a barrier to creativity. Thanks to a dedicated team of local people working tirelessly behind the scenes, the Sudbury Carnival 2018 provided a welcome blast of colour, fun and celebration for the community to enjoy.

The sun shone, the fancy dress costumes came out and a succession of characters, clubs and local groups paraded through the town culminating in Belle Vue Park.

Live music by Route 66 and chart tunes, provided a lively backdrop to the afternoon as the park played host to hoards of folk enjoying a party atmosphere. Highlights of the afternoon included a display by Bellydanza who brought some eastern promise to proceedings while Swingjivesudbury.co.uk were on hand for a bit of 50s nostalgia. For those more interested in wildlife there were bird displays to watch. There were plenty of activities for youngsters to do with Shoents Face Painters, Sudbury Party Hire, Lazer Tag Fun, Punch and Judy and fancy dress competitions. Even Spiderman, Ana and Belle turned up to join in the fun.

The Park was awash with local traders selling glorious barista coffees and delicious eats and treats. The donuts courtesy of Adam and Merrony were a particular favourite!

Visitors to the Carnival were made very welcome and the afternoon gave local organisations such as Just Talk a great forum to share their mission with the community to save and change lives, by offering a bespoke wellbeing service in the town.

Chairperson Angie Talbot is keen to inform the town that next year’s Carnival will take place on 18 August 2019.

The start of the school year is always quite exciting here, we shall be welcoming new riders from their schools as well as our ‘old’ regulars.

People will be amazed to see the new colour of our arena with its golden surface, a very jolly topping on the old worn one.

The Centre has been polished and cleaned, spiders moved, pigeons shooed away and rabbits sworn at. The tack is clean and supple; the herd is ready for action.

Council commissions options study for Delphi site Babergh District Council has appointed experienced consultants Carter Jonas to conduct an options and appraisal study on the future of the former Delphi Industries site in Sudbury.

The study has been commissioned as part of Babergh’s commitments as a member of the South Suffolk Taskforce and will consist of a focused month-long options and appraisal study to determine the most sustainable future for the 9-hectare site, situated off Newton Road in Sudbury.

The former Delphi plant remains s prime industrial site for Sudbury and the South Suffolk economy, with the full focus and efforts of the council continues to be on preserving the current single industrial use, providing employment opportunities for the highly skilled workforce. The options study and appraisal work will provide evidence and assessment work that will be used to identify the opportunities for the site and how they would benefit the local economy.

Other work is also underway to secure the future of the site by the South Suffolk Taskforce, including significant marketing and inward investment promotion being led by New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership with support from the Department for International Trade (DIT) and partners from the taskforce. The South Suffolk Taskforce is chaired

by South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge and includes representatives from town, district and county councils and the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

Cllr Simon Barrett, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy, said: “The Delphi site has been providing employment for the people of Sudbury for many years, creating skilled, well paid jobs in the town, and we’re committed to seeing that continue. It’s sad news that Delphi themselves have left, but Sudbury continues to offer a well-connected, good value location with a dedicated and talented workforce: we’ll be working hard to attract the right employers to the site and to making sure the work offered at site continues to be a source of pride for our residents.”

150 Years of Long Melford FC It all began for Long Melford Football Club on 14th January 1868 on the Church Green in the village against Ipswich Rangers, with Melford winning 5-1 a great start to an illustrious history.

Not a selection of balls to choose from! in the early days it was an animal bladder covered in hessian. The village launched a “Penny a Week” campaign and eventually a leather ball was purchased. In those starting days the Church was interlinked to the football club with the Rectory being heavily involved.

The team moved to various ground locations in the village. The team became very successful and the 1887/88 season was particularly successful. The total running expenses for the club in that season amounted to £30 with a deficit arising of 10 shillings and 10 pennies which members met from their own pockets. Just to think, in season 2016/17, expenses for three officials at a match came to over £300!

Melford won the Suffolk Senior Cup in 1887 beating Woodbridge Town 1-0 in a replay after beating Ipswich Town in the semi final.

In 1863 one of the Melford players William Neville Cobbald was capped by England in the period 1883 to 1888.

In 1895 they again won the Suffolk Senior Cup. The third victory in the Suffolk senior Cup came in 1908/09. Melford continued to thrive throughout both war periods playing at different venues throughout the village. There was always great rivalry between Sudbury and Long Melford and some of the games would attract in excess of 2000 spectators.

Lurching from success to almost extinction Melford survived some dramatic years and eventually purchased through public subscription their present ground ‘Stoneylands’ in the late 1940’s.

Over the years Melford have had the “benefits” of having several talented professionals turn out and against at the club. In the late 1940’s Alf Chalkley ex West Ham fall back who kept the Black Lion PH was appointed player coach.

Soon after this Bert Barlow ex Barnsley/Wolves, Leicester player became player-coach. Barlow won an FA cup winners medal with Portsmouth in 1939 when he scored two goals in the 4:1 victory over Wolves. Three years on Long Melford won the Suffolk Senior Cup in the early 1950’s.

Until 1959 The Cock & Bell PH was used as head quarters and changing rooms for the club, with all players having to walk down the Village Street for the games at Stoneylands!

After this changing rooms were built at Stoneylands by voluntary labour and exist to this day.

In recent times Melford despite being a Village Club, with very limited resources, have progressed to step FIVE of the football pyramid and currently play in the Premier division of the Thurlow Nunn League. Much hard work, by some very loyal stalwarts has been the foundation for that success. The club now has a first team, Reserve team, 2 under 18s, 8 youth teams and two teams for young ladies.

With costs escalating, it is only through good sponsorship and hard work by a few that this club still exists after 150 years.

Have you ever wondered about Orchard Barn?

I did. I saw the signs on the side of the road, occasionally adverts for courses making things out of wood, clay and straw that I thought had long since stopped being made, and sometimes encountered Orchard Barners at country events but I never really understood what they were about until I visited following a presentation at Battisford and Combs Gardening Club.

Even then it was still difďŹ cult to pin down what Orchard Barn is about.

Nobody lives there. People come and work there giving their time as and when they can. So what were they doing? Well essentially people, from children to those a good bit older, were doing some very practical things, sharing their skills and learning new ones to do with the ways people used to build houses and live, making best use of their environment.

We hear a lot about the environment these days and I like others, have come to the conclusion that there is something distinctly unsatisfying about our throw away, consumer dominated way of life especially if we consider what we are leaving behind for future generations. I seem to spend my time chasing my own tail trying to pack more and more into my day and yet still not have the time to appreciate and enjoy much of it. I felt that I needed an injection of New Perspective.

So without really understanding quite what I was going to I went along to Orchard Barn for a “Tree to Timber� day.

I can tell you that I am very glad that I did.

I parked the car and approached “The Barn�. Everything had been made by hand from the timbers frame walls to the shingles that roofed it. I thought I had walked into Tolkien’s Hobbiton. My overriding impression of this barn – restored by people power – and of the 1.5 acre plot in which it sits, was its beauty. We live with things that are generally made by machines. They have neat and clean lines but when something is made by hand it has character. It holds something of the character of the people that made that thing, whether those things are buildings or a wooden spoon.

Sudden deaths & their inquests were the lifeblood of columnists, whose reports fascinated readers with tales of misery and misfortune.

Stoke-by-Nayland Norman Plum match Played on Sunday the 29th of July, the quarter-final Norman Plum match against Belfairs GC, from Leigh-on-Sea, was a close call with Belfairs eventually winning 3.5 to 2.5. The conditions on match day were very difficult with swirling winds gusting up to 48 mph and occasional showers.

The 3 away matches were all won by Belfairs with Dean Brace and Steve Hewett losing on the 18th, Alan White and Bob Tokley were beaten 3 and 2, and Trevor Brace and Guy Holland losing 4 and 3. Home advantage at Belfairs which is a tight course eventually came through for their captain Ray Jones.

At home, debutants Kevan Priestland and Jason Hoggarth put in a fine performance to win 5 and 4. Luke Bennett and Ian Todd won 3 and 1. The other match played by Rich Fryer and Nigel Howgego was drawn with the Belfairs pairing of Dave Bucke and Alex Tindall coming back from being 2 down with three to play.

The match was played in great spirits and Belfairs are a great bunch. We wish them all the best in the next round against Chelmsford.

Joker Dave lifts the Jonathan Lambert Salver Newton Green staged another successful golf week with 500 entries across seven competitions, including the hugely popular Jonathan Lambert Centenary Silver Salver.

Once again the end-of-week, Saturday contest attracted around 130 entries, with former captain Dave Lavelle a popular winner.

Lavelle again demonstrated his haphazard speech making capabilities, as he brought cheers and laughter to an unscheduled doubled act presentation routine with lady captain Lizzie Johnson.

He had received the trophy from sponsor Jonathan Lambert, having won the event on count back with 41 Stableford points, his eight points from the last three holes helping him edge home ahead of Tim Harbord, with Robert Rush third on 40 points.

The evening was given a glittering atmosphere thanks to the marque decorating skills of Kate Fraser, who also managed to extract a record fourfigure profit from the raffle organised by the ladies’ section.

There was a very tight contest for the best woman spot in the salver, with Gwyneth Ferreira at the count back top of six contestants on 36 points.

All talks will be at the Parish Room in Church Road, Little Waldingfield, commencing at 7.30 pm sharp.

Thirteen-year-old Nathan Willett, with a handicap of 24, was the best junior with an impressive 39 points.

The recent rain may have brought some light relief to the Fire and Emergency services although they remain on high alert for crop, field and wild fires in the region as the high temperatures continue. Exceptionally high temperatures and low rainfall have left crops and habitat extremely dry creating a very high risk of fire and putting intense pressure on the Fire Service and other emergency services as they tackle blazes on a daily basis across the county. With the hot dry spell predicted to continue risk and demand are likely to continue throughout the summer weeks.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our emergency services for their amazing work and in particular our Fire Crews as they continue to tackle fires across the County.

Road Workers in Suffolk verbally abused Suffolk County Council has urged drivers to remain patient while roadworks take place during hot weather.

A number of workers have reported being verbally abused by impatient motorists. The council’s roads and transport team took to Twitter to remind drivers that “breaks are essential” for road workers carrying out long shifts in the heat.

Suffolk County Council stated they have full respect to teams working on Suffolk’s roads in this weather! Sadly there have been reports that workers are receiving verbal abuse.

Members of public are asked to please remember they are working 8 hours with hot materials, in full protective gear & very little access to shade and it is essential they receive frequent breaks from the heat and to rehydrate.

Council agrees to draw up costed five-year cycling plan At the Council meeting on 19 July, councillors from the Liberal Democrat, Green and Independent Group put forward two motions asking for a commitment to investing in Suffolk’s cycling infrastructure. The first motion asked the council to set up a cross-party group tasked with drawing up a costed five-year cycling plan, whilst the second motion asked the council to commit to ring-fencing at least 5% of its annual Integrated Transport Block for cycling infrastructure.

Whilst there was unanimous support for motion 1, the administration would not support a commitment of funding for cycling infrastructure, and so unfortunately motion 2 was rejected.

Although the two motions were voted on separately, they are intrinsically linked: without a minor commitment of council funding, any future bids to the Department for Transport are likely to be unsuccessful. This has been the case for the past seven years, during which Suffolk has missed out on five opportunities to receive funding for cycling from the DfT. Currently, SCC spends approximately 10% of its Integrated Transport Block on cycling infrastructure anyway, so the motion was not asking for additional money – just a firm commitment that a minimal level of funding would be available each year.

We are awaiting further information regarding the cross-party group that will draw up a cycling plan, and will keep you updated as this progresses.

Final decision reached on School Transport Policy changes Following the Cabinet’s decision to change Suffolk’s school transport policy, my group (made up of Liberal Democrats, Greens and Independents) submitted a joint “call-in” of the decision with the Labour group.

The call-in argued that Cabinet did not have enough information to make an appropriate decision, particularly with regards to the financial modelling, the experience of Essex County Council, and the potential impact on Suffolk’s Greenest County ambitions.

On Monday 9 July, the Scrutiny Committee questioned officers and the Cabinet member in response to the call-in. However, they determined that the concerns we raised were not valid and so rejected the call-in. This means that the Cabinet’s decision was endorsed and the planned changes to the school transport policy will be implemented from September 2019.

Additional £6m borrowed to fund improvements for recycling centres The Cabinet has agreed to borrow an additional £6m to fund improvement works for four of Suffolk’s recycling centres. The priority works have been identified as follows: • Deliver urgent improvements to the Foxhall (estimated cost £3 million) and Haverhill (estimated cost £1 million) recycling centres; and • Secure sites for replacement recycling centres for Ipswich (estimated cost £1 million) and Stowmarket (estimated cost £1 million).

We have highlighted to the cabinet member responsible for waste services the importance of working with local councillors and residents when attempting to improve recycling centres.

Fire and Ambulance services share Sudbury base A joint station for Sudbury’s fire and ambulance services officially opened on 12 July 2018 and is fully operational.

The station on Gregory Street has been occupied by the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, but now the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) will share facilities in a new partnership.

EEAST staff will now benefit from improved facilities and better access to the road network for emergency vehicles. It also means that blue light services can build on existing partnerships and it represents value for money for taxpayers.

The station in Sudbury is the fifth shared community fire and ambulance station in Suffolk, joining those in Brandon, Bury St Edmunds and two in Lowestoft. £1m funding to boost youth employment in Suffolk A host of regeneration and infrastructure projects are also identified for potential share of £10 million.

Public sector leaders in Suffolk have given their backing to a major financial boost to help more young people in Suffolk get into education, employment or training.

An extra £200,000 has been agreed by Suffolk’s council leaders and the Police and Crime Commissioner, with a further £200,000 agreed in principle for a second year. This is on top of £600,000 committed by Suffolk County Council - £1 million in total.

Currently in Suffolk 7% of 16 to 18 year olds are not in education, employment or training (NEET) and 12% of the county’s 66,000 16 to 24 years olds are unemployed. Suffolk’s youth unemployment position is in line with the national picture, but Suffolk continues to be challenged by significant volumes of young people who are wasting their talent and potential and are not able to enjoy the benefits that work can bring.

The investment will support local projects to reduce the number of young people who are NEET or unemployed, including programmes to prepare young people to benefit from local Apprenticeship opportunities. Suffolk County Council will work with district and borough councils, local education providers and the voluntary and community sector to develop the programmes.

A host of significant regeneration and infrastructure projects have been identified following Suffolk being invited to pilot a new Government approach to funding local areas.

Suffolk has successfully applied to be part of the scheme, one of only 10 areas in the whole country, which is allowing it to keep an extra £10.4 million worth of money collected from local businesses in Suffolk in 2018/19. Business rates money is normally passed to Central Government. The one-year pilot, known as the ‘Business Rate Retention’ programme, allows Suffolk to retain 100% of the growth in local business rates, to invest in projects that boost the local economy and support communities in Suffolk.

The next steps are for each potential project to be developed in more detail with projects, get final agreement, and then to start later this year. As part of a review of the way Suffolk Public Sector Leaders meet and work, leaders today agreed that there will be five formal meetings of the group each year, held in public, likely to be in June, September, November, January and March.

The meetings will be held in different areas around Suffolk and representatives from the two Local Enterprise Partnerships that cover Suffolk will be invited. Reports and minutes will be published one week before the meetings.

This is part of the group’s ambition to operate in an open and transparent way. Leaders also agreed that Councillor Jennie Jenkins will act as the independent chair of the group for the 2018/19 year.

Sporting memories set to be discovered across Suffolk’s care homes A ground-breaking project was launched in July to provide regular sports-based reminiscence activities for care home residents and visitors.

Sporting Memories Network CIC, in partnership with the Suffolk County Council led Most Active County Partnership, has developed a unique opportunity to enable care homes across Suffolk to deliver award winning sporting reminiscence activities.

Staff and volunteers from a range of care homes will receive training, resources and advice to equip them to deliver sporting reminiscence activities over the next 12 months and beyond. The impact of the activities on residents, their families and staff will be evaluated to gauge success.

Initially staff from 10 homes will be trained to take part in the project with it being extended to further homes in the future. The homes will have access to local and national archive images, reports and memorabilia inspiring older people to talk about their own favourite stars or teams and those special moments in sport that stay with them, whether as a spectator or as a participant.

Upbeat Heart Support presented with cheque for £5000 from Bury Beer Festival A presentation took place recently at Oakes Barn, Bury St Edmunds.

A cheque for £5,000 was donated to Upbeat Heart Support from CAMRA from the proceeds of the annual Bury Beer Festival held in the Apex in April this year.

Martin Bates and his CAMRA members run the Beer Festival each year, which showcases Real Ales and Ciders from all over the country.

Although CAMRA present the Festivals, Martin and his group only participate because a lot of money is raised for local Charities. It is a tremendous amount of work for a lot of people. This year has been particularly successful, with 20% more footfall, and the addition of many sponsors.

Upbeat’s Chairman Sylvia Baker said: “I am hugely surprised with the amount of this cheque and absolutely delighted. It will help pay for our Cardiac nurses and Instructors at the group. This is a huge amount of money for us and having voluntered at the Beer Festival on several occasions, we have seen for ourselves the amount of work taken on by Martin and his team over several days. We thank them all very very much.”

Other charities attending the presentation were Gatehouse, Hearing dogs for the Deaf, Milkmaid Folk Group and Bardfest. They all received donations.

Upbeat Heart Support is a self financing charity that provides rehabilitation for heart patients and their carers.

The Life of Brian In the ďŹ lm with the above title, a disaffected dissident asks, “What have the Romans ever done for us?â€?. He was surprised to hear how much the Romans had contributed to the life of 1st century Israel. We could ask a similar question today. “What have the churches ever done for us in Sudbury?â€? Again the answer is surprising.

In our community we have a cafĂŠ and meeting place weekly, called Kettle and Fish in St. Peters church staffed by church going Christians. On Saturday evening Town Pastors patrol the street of the nighttime economy and they are all Christians who attend church. Then there is Storehouse, providing much needed food for needy families organised and administered by church going Christians. There is the town youth club called Edens, which while independent of any one church is run by Christian leaders.

They are currently seeking funds to enable them to purchase their venue in Gainsborough Street. Church premises are available for weddings and funerals. Where else but Holy Trinity church, Long Melford, could the funeral of the much loved Tony Simpson have been held in front of a crowd of 400 mourners. Number 72, North Street is another resource for families and individuals in need, again staffed by Christians.

Who provides chaplaincy services at Gainsborough school? The answer is church going Christians. My own contribution is as a travelling preacher of good news and as chaplain to our local police station. Time and space limit my ability to elaborate on Fellowship football and snooker, the weekly all denominational prayer breakfast and occasional combined services orchestrated by Churches Together in Sudbury.

All this in addition to the usual weekly services held in churches in the district with messages of challenge, comfort and hope are a regular feature as is often inspiring music. What has the church done for Sudbury? Quite a lot! Why not visit a church and ďŹ nd out more. Remember if you don’t use it you might lose it.

Make Way for Lucia The next production from Sudbury Dramatic Society based at Sudbury’s Quay Theatre, is Make Way for Lucia by John Van Druten, on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 11th to Saturday 15th September at 7.45pm, adapted from the popular Mapp and Lucia series of books by EF Benson.

The play is set in the small town of Tilling during the early 1930s where the pace is slow and there’s not an awful lot for the genteel folk to do other than gossip, paint, shop, gossip, entertain and play bridge. Tilling society is led by Miss Mapp, until that is the arrival of Lucia, who is renting Miss Mapp’s house for the summer. Every summer the Tilling residents all swap houses with each other, outsider Lucia very soon starts to make her own mark on the town and so the drama begins‌ Make Way for Lucia is being directed by Belinda Hasler, no stranger herself to both acting and directing at The Quay. Belinda says: “The play is a story of two women, who are each trying to gain the upper hand and is true to the distinctive characters imagined by EF Benson, on whose books the play is based. With a gentle humour and a cast of experienced SDS actors, every single character gets the chance to make their own impression on the audience.â€?

Steeleye Span are fast approaching their 50th anniversary 2019, with a work rate to put many younger artists to shame. The band’s eighth album in twelve years - 2016’s Dodgy Bastards - saw them return to the folk tales and characters that have always been at the heart of the Steeleye sound. Dodgy Bastards saw the folk-rock pioneers continue drawing stories of murder, religion, incest, skulls, honour killings and tormented spirit. They once more create an inspired and dark take on the music of the British Isles.

Steeleye Span are an English Folk Rock band formed in 1969. Still active today, along with Fairport Convention they are amongst the best known acts of the British Folk Revival and were among the most commercially successful, thanks to their hit singles Gaudetteâ€? and “All Around My Hatâ€?. They had four Top 40 albums and achieved a certiďŹ ed gold record with sales of “All Around My Hatâ€?.

The present Steeleye line-up is: The Legendary Maddy Prior (vocals), with long term member Liam Genockey (drums), Julian Littman,(guitar/keyboards and vocals) Andrew Sinclair (guitar), Jesse Mae Smart (violin and backing vocals), Benji Kirkpatrick (guitar and backing vocals),(whose father John Kirkpatrick played with the band in 1977-1978) and Roger Carey (bass) Steeleye are working on their new studio album for their 2019, 50th Celebration, some of the new tracks will feature in the set list for the up and coming UK tour. “STEELEYE Span cross the folk rock divide like no other act in the UK�.
