Late Summer events planned for residents and visitors This month, high streets and tourist locations across Babergh and Mid Suffolk are preparing a host of events and activities as they welcome residents and visitors continue to safely following the lifting of covid restrictions.

Shops, restaurants, pubs and visitor attractions in high streets around the county have faced unprecedented closures but with the help of additional funding, Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have been able to support towns and villages to create beautiful spaces and reopen safely this summer.

The Welcome Back Fund created by Government using monies from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is designed for Local Authorities to help towns reopen, host events and activities and improve and beautify community spaces while keeping visitors safe.

Events include Green Sundays in Sudbury which offer fun eco-friendly activities and workshops, a community bounce back event in Needham Market to connect local businesses back into the community and craft fairs in Sudbury and Hadleigh.

In addition, the Love Exploring app will introduce new trails, games and visitor information for Sudbury, Hadleigh, Lavenham, Stowmarket,

Needham Market, Eye and the Dedham Vale area Visitors will be able to celebrate the silk and textiles heritage of Babergh with guided walks and outdoor workshops around Sudbury while families visiting Eye can enjoy the popular Hare and Tortoise Sculpture Trail.

Cllr Gerard Brewster, Mid Suffolk District Council cabinet member for economic growth said: “Many of our towns and villages are looking forward to a busy late summer season and the Welcome Back Fund will not only provide a boost for the events and activities but will also provide extra resources to keep our high streets clean and safe for residents and visitors from around the county and beyond.”

August has been quite a busy month meeting so many volunteers all striving to help those who may not be as fortunate. The first one of these events was the High Sheriff’s Garden Party in Burgh near Woodbridge. To award the many hardworking volunteers across Suffolk. It was a really special summer evening with those who give their time and energy to a plethora of deserving causes. It was an honour to represent Sudbury.

I had a meeting with the Deputy Lord Lieutenant and Cairan Griffin our Town Clerk to look at ways in which this extremely significant commemoration can be observed and honoured. I can clearly remember watching the Coronation in 1953 on a tiny black and white television. Sweets were temporarily removed from rationing, I had some smarties that were guzzled by my grandmother’s sister Aunty Gertie. Isn’t it strange the memories surface after many years? It would be great to collate some memories of those events, so if anyone has the time, please send me your recollections. They could be sent to my home address or the Town Hall.

I have been made aware that people in the Babergh area do not know that there is a grant available up to £7,500 to enable them to continue to live in their own home. This grant is for homeowners and is without a means test, so that they can have for example: a stair lift, a shower to replace a bath, handrails, a key safe, ramps, anything that will ensure that someone who could be recovering from a stroke or disability will continue to live independently. Information for this can be obtained by the Babergh website or by visiting the Access Information Desk in the Sudbury Library.

The Sudbury Rowing Club held their 151st Regatta on Friars Meadow on Saturday 7th August. It was great to meet so many visitors to our Town and present prizes. I was especially pleased to hear so many comments from these visitors from Hertfordshire, Kent, Cambridgeshire, and Lincolnshire.

This location is perfect for a Regatta, there are very few towns with a venue such as ours. It has been terrific to see Sudbury and Long Melford becoming far busier now that restrictions have been lifted, hopefully our shops will return to pre covid times. Two local artists, Jane Ford and Moira Fraser NEED A NEW BATHROOM? LOOK NO FURTHER. Steele had the inspiration to hold an Art Exhibition in St Peters Church, assisted by Lorna Hoey, Sally Freer and Lupe Cunha, ‘Celebrating a Creative Lockdown’. It was an amazing selection of work from fifty-two local artists. I was honoured to be asked to open the exhibition. I have been reading ‘Long Melford Through the Ages’ written by Barry Wall, and in May 1604 there was an outbreak of a virulent plague. By August ninety two deaths had been recorded, it was thought to have been brought to Long Melford by a traveller visiting one of the many Inns. It was suggested that it was a type of Bubonic plague carried by fleas.

This must have seriously affected the residents as the population would have been far smaller than it is now. We have a good selection of books about this area in The Tourist Information Centre behind the Town Hall as well as information about walks and interesting places to visit. I just love Ashley Barnes discovering more about Suffolk, or maybe I’m too inquisitive.

The writer philosopher, Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) wrote “An early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day”. On Monday 16th of August, I was given the opportunity to cut the ribbon on a commemorative bench situated on the footpath by the River Stour near Bakers Mill. Sudbury Ramblers were the first Ramblers Group to be formed in Suffolk and this Barnes_roofing@hotmail.com was the 50th Anniversary. There are 150 members health and well-being is maintained by regular walking in our splendid countryside. My favourite walk is from the Croft down to Brundon and back early in the morning. Lavenham Sinfonia, your local orchestra, is back with an evening of Mozart and Beethoven on Sunday 19th September at 7.00pm in Lavenham Church. Under the direction of its guest conductor Vicente Chavarria, Lavenham Sinfonia will play Mozart’s last and great symphony ‘the Jupiter’ . The concert warms up with more Mozart – his lively overture to Don Giovanni . After this the well known local pianist Andrew Leach joins the Sinfonia to perform Beethoven’s much loved fourth piano concerto.

Covid-19 meant Lavenham Sinfonia had to cancel all its 2020 concerts and the first two planned for this year. The orchestra, led by Greg Eaton, is made up of local professional musicians and experienced amateurs. The Chairman of the orchestra, John Hooper, says that Lavenham Sinfonia is looking forward to welcoming back audiences now it is able to perform live again. Sudbury residents who are committing to 25 days of movement!

A small community in Sudbury are encouraging other local residents across the county to take part in Active Suffolk’s latest physical activity challenge kicking off on Monday 23rd August.

Residents across the county will be challenged to commit to recording 25 days of physical activity, movement, or sport in recognition of Active Suffolk’s 25th birthday, using their new online physical activity tracker. Neighbours of a small community based in Sudbury have already committed to participating in the challenge where they hope to increase their levels of physical activity over the 25 days by walking together and taking part in some chair-based exercises.

Kerry Butcher from Sudbury first encouraged the community to be active through the delivery of chair-based exercise classes but now six of her neighbours will be participating in the 25 for Active Suffolk challenge. She said: “After qualifying as a chair-based exercise instructor, I decided to encourage my local neighbours to get involved in some regular sessions.

I delivered this for them at my home but when we went into lockdown, we moved the sessions outside, however the weather often put a stop to this, so we decided to begin venturing out on some gentle walks together.

At Home-Start Mid & West Suffolk we offer support in our local community through home visiting volunteers, family groups and specialist support groups to parents/carers from all walks of life, and we aim to help them through any barriers they may face. Our services and projects are dedicated to making a positive difference to the lives of children, families and communities throughout Mid & West Suffolk.

We couldn’t carry out this vital work without volunteers, so if you can spare a couple of hours a week to support a family in need, come and join our amazing team. We are also looking for volunteers who may have previous experience of children with additional needs, but this is not essential.

Our next Home-Visiting volunteer training course starts on 23rd September 2021 and will be held in Thurston, Bury St Edmunds. It will run every Friday from 10am to 2pm for 7 weeks (with a break for half-term week on 28th October).

Or maybe you would like to volunteer at one of our family play groups, supporting our co-ordinator with setting up and delivering various activities for parents/carers and their children under 5 years old. Much needed homes at Chilton Woods a step closer Details of phase one of Chilton Woods and the development’s design code received approval . – ensuring a high quality, well designed, sustainable new community which meets the needs of residents.

Outline planning permission for the site, comprising of 289 acres of land to the north of Woodhall Business Park, was granted in 2018 and plans include 1,150 homes, employment opportunities, significant public open space and a raft of other community benefits.

Since then, planning officers have worked closely with applicant Taylor Wimpey, local parish councils and other stakeholders on the Design Code and package of infrastructure to accompany proposals, with approval for final details of part of the infrastructure plans being granted earlier this year.

Before making a start on the new homes, Babergh District Council required the applicant to work with the community to prepare a design code for the scheme. This was to ensure that plans would meet the council’s standards for good quality design – creating a community where people want to live and work, now and in future, whilst also achieving more sustainable development.

After extensive public consultation and engagement over recent months – supporting the council’s ongoing ambition for everyone to have a say on new homes – the comprehensive 135 page design code guidance document came before planning committee yesterday.

Following input from planning officers, the local community, councillors – and subsequent debate – the committee voted unanimously, with ten votes cast, in favour of approving the code, subject to conditions.

This framework will help guide development and be referred to during future decision making on final details of the scheme across the whole Chilton Woods site, and has been informed by national design guidance, including principles on nature, built form, public space and life span in relation to design. It also considers building heights to minimise the visual impact of development, focal points to help residents and visitors navigate around the site, and character points to bring a sense of place.

All new homes will be designed to the code’s standards, setting out generous spacing between houses, orientation towards public open spaces, native hedgerows and locally sourced planting, as well as colours and other visual aspects which are in keeping with Suffolk design. Homes will also incorporate wildlife niches to respond to the site-wide ecology strategy used to help mitigate impact from the development.

In addition, significant consideration has been given to the design of the village centre, forming the heart of the new community, to ensure its character complements the surrounding public woodland, play spaces and sports pavilions and pitches. It will also enable flexible use of the space in response to residents’ needs, whether that be the accommodation of community fetes, BBQs and other informal gatherings, or to offer impromptu parking, with the design code including an effective car parking strategy to prevent car dominated streets.

The code also promotes more sustainable transport options for residents with the inclusion of multiple walking and cycling routes to connect the site – meeting the council’s commitment to promoting active travel for residents and addressing climate change.

Cllr Stephen Plumb, Chair of Babergh District Council’s planning committee commented: “Chilton Woods, and the many benefits it brings, is a significant milestone for Babergh and its design code will help pave the way for high quality development which serves not just future residents but the district as a whole.

“I am immensely grateful to everyone who has had their say on the code, with this public feedback being invaluable in the preparation of the comprehensive guidance, setting out our expectations of the developer and helping us to create an attractive, sustainable and connected community which is in keeping with the local area.

“We are now a step closer to construction beginning on proposals, which not only offer a substantial amount of affordable homes and employment opportunities, but will also secure the infrastructure needed to keep pace with growth, including new schools and leisure facilities – meeting our ongoing ambition for Babergh to be somewhere that everyone is proud to call home.”

During the meeting, the committee also gave the go-ahead for reserved matters for phase one of Chilton Woods – detailing the layout, landscaping and appearance of 200 new homes. Of these, 85 will be affordable, offering opportunities for shared ownership and lower rents than the local market rate to meet identified need.

Proposals also incorporate public open space, as well as footpaths and cycleways to connect to the wider Chilton Woods site, including a route to the new primary school to encourage students and parents to either walk or cycle to school – minimising car usage for future residents of the development.

Over the school summer holiday, Sudbury Rotary was pleased to offer support to the Salvation Army with their school uniform project. New President Gloria Woods said “This year Sudbury Rotary will be doing things a little differently due to a lack of fundraising activities over the past 15 months, as a result of government restrictions.

Instead of offering funding we intend to work towards Sudbury Rotary being part of Service Projects within the community. Our members will, where possible, give their ‘time and effort’ as we cannot, at present, offer financial support”.

Together with Lieutenant Rachael Hepburn from the Sudbury Branch of the Salvation Army, Gloria agreed days when Rotarians would give their time to support the project to help families in Sudbury who are struggling to afford school uniforms. This project provided a system to reduce landfill by Rotarian Gloria Woods, passing on pre-loved and outgrown uniforms to new Salvation Army volunteer Connell and Rotarian homes, helping to give an average saving of more Kaz Maria Mills- Farinas helping than £300 per child for secondary school uniforms with the distribution of (1.4 million wearable school uniform items are school uniforms thrown away each year in the UK!). Outgrown, good quality primary and secondary school uniforms were donated, sorted, laundered and ready for collection during August, at the Salvation Army Hall in Station Road and the scheme was welcomed by many local families.

A street collection to raise funds to support the people of Haiti following their devastating earthquake will be held on 11 September, and talks during the month will include Jerry Crawford on “Sri Lanka Culture and Wildlife” on 6th September with Sara Backhouse-Wood speaking about the work of Medical Detection Dogs on 20th of the month. Yet another garden picnic will take place on 27 September as these events have proved very popular.

The talk will be preceded by a short general meeting, made necessary in view of our delayed AGM’s due to the Coronavirus.

This month we are focusing on The Community Market. These markets are held on the 2nd Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. and admission is free.

We are very excited this month to have two local authors with us to launch and talk about their books.

Two very different books, but both written by Cat lovers. Maureen’s book’Feline Fine!’ is all about cats.

Her inspiration came from the many conversations she had with customers that visited her craft stall at St Peters about the various antics and characteristics of their cats.

Miriam’s book ‘Lantern of the Dead’ is a modern ‘who done it’ set in a French village with a sizeable British expat community. Our amateur sleuth Tara starts off investigating poison pen emails and ends up investigating murder.

We will be displaying information about the books in our reception at The Christopher Centre, so do pop in and learn more.

As well as local authors we have Penny a well known local artist joining us as usual. Penny’s work is quite unique and striking, she is always happy to chat to folk and share her knowledge of the local art scene.

The Sudbury Community Depot will be there with homemade cakes and preserves. We are very happy to say we will be launching our new preserves suitable for diabetics and our homemade mincemeat, plus reviving that great British classic Pan Yan pickle.

We will have crafts of all kinds including Buttons Stationery. As well as her usual handmade stationery, Nicki has some lovely gifts in terracotta pots (see her Facebook page). Great for stocking fillers.

Alongside crafts we have handmade jewellery and gifts. Louise will be here with her essential oils. Louise has a wealth of knowledge on how essential oils can help with health and well being. She will bring along some of her unique blends. All our stall holders are local so this is a real community event.

Refreshments are served throughout the day, with homemade lunches from 12 noon.

The Community markets are important fund raisers for both The Christopher Centre and The Sudbury Community Depot and help us to continue to work within the community.

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre

The ragwort digging party took place in a rare moment of heat wave at the beginning of the summer holidays.

Half the band of wonderful volunteers scoured the boys’ top field, and half tried to clear a pony paddock for the girls. After two hours of hard work Lyn called a halt and refreshed her victims with Pimms. A moment of camaraderie where the exhausted diggers relaxed in the shade and congratulated themselves on a hard morning’s work. Our grateful thanks go out to them. I hear there is more ragwort growing of course...

My ears listen out for more gossip but I’m a bit locked up at present.

Security is important obviously, but Babs and I don’t get much of a look in at present. I listen to the Maintenance Team chatting, repairing things and discussing their schedules. My photo shows a bit of a refit going on to the kitchen door!

Our fab. Fund raisers are active whilst I rest my circuits. There is to be a FUN DOG SHOW here on September 11th with lots of other attractions: A Fete, a children’s craft competition with a horse theme, a second-hand tack sale, and refreshments. Look out for the posters.

Yarn Worx, Hadleigh’s New Yarn Shop Following on from our piece in last month’s issue of the Community News we have had numerous people contact us to ask about our new knitting and crochet courses. We aim to offer a course during the week and also one at the weekend and we will run the courses as regularly as they are needed - we want EVERYONE to learn to crochet or knit!

We have been working on the details of the courses which we think are going to be a huge amount of fun. Our plan is to really knock your socks off with the presentation!

It is our strong belief that you learn to crochet or knit with the very best materials so you will be using the yarn we sell in the shop - the highest quality and most gorgeous yarn we have! You will choose your own colours (that’s a big part of the fun!). There will be plenty of other treats and surprises for you as well.

The cost of each day course will be £99 and will include lunch and of course drinks and snacks throughout the day. We will also provide you with everything you need to switch the world off for the day and just escape to a lovely place with a group of like-minded people, learning a new skill which we all firmly believe is as good as yoga for relaxation (and doesn’t require any bendiness!)

You will go at your own pace - there will be no rush – and by the end of the day, you will go away with the skills you need to finish your project. We will be running crochet and knit groups so you can come along and craft with others and we’ll also have “clinic” days when we can help you brush up on any bits and bobs you need a bit more practice with.

Of course there will be time for shopping and you’ll enjoy a 10% discount on the day of your course.

We hope you’re enjoying the holidays; our Summer Reading Challenge is well under way. It’s still not too late to get started though; just come along to the library and sign up. Make sure you bring your library card and you can join in. You earn rewards along the way and receive a certificate and medal when you finish. The theme this year is Wild World Heroes. There will be volunteers in the library between 11am and 3pm most days to listen to the children talk about their books and help them keep track of their progress.

Covid rules are being relaxed but we are being encouraged to stay vigilant.

The staff here are still wearing face coverings in the library and we ask politely that our customers do the same. We have the NHS QR code available at the front door and the sanitizer is still there for use before you enter the building.

Our groups are being gradually reintroduced and we can now offer Toptime on a Tuesday afternoon at 2.30pm and Wordplay story-telling for our smallest customers on a Thursday morning at 10.30am. Toptime is a social group for adults and we hope to get a range of activities and events, including a book group, in place over the coming weeks. Local Energy Showcase will champion green businesses Businesses and community organisations are being urged to tackle climate change by joining Suffolk’s first ever showcase event celebrating sustainability and green energy.

The Local Energy Showcase, organised by Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, will promote how different types of energy can be used by communities and businesses help reduce their impact on the environment, lower costs and contribute to the fight against climate change.

Tickets are now available for the two-day extravaganza, at Wherstead Park in Ipswich on 21 and 22 October. The event is open to all businesses with an interest in finding out more about local energy solutions and as well as community groups and parishes who would like to understand and explore the benefits of using local energy solutions.

The Local Energy Showcase, marks the Councils’ recognition of a climate emergency and their commitment to the Suffolk-wide aim to become carbon neutral by 2030, aims to inform and update visitors on the latest in green energy. Featuring keynote speeches from specialists in the field, workshops, as well as the chance to participate in a Q&A session with a panel of experts.

The event will feature a marketplace for green energy businesses and organisations to showcase their products and services, demonstrate how local energy solutions can be installed and used, and how switching energy supplies can lower greenhouse emissions and reduce energy costs.

Delegates will have the opportunity to network with and learn from leaders in the fields of carbon reduction, heat networks and solar energy.

Practical workshops will include understanding the concepts of becoming net zero, how to access green grants and funding, and how to reduce energy consumption.

During day one, businesses will find out what local energy solutions are available to them, how technology can be used to boost the benefits of green energy and how, local energy is a growing sector with the potential of bringing more skilled jobs to the region.

On day two, local groups and parishes will learn how solutions such as solar energy and ground source heat pumps can power whole communities, reducing costs and supporting local ambitions of cleaner and greener places to live, work and visit.

Keynote speakers include Shivali Mathur, from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and Emma Bridge, of Community Energy England, who will share real examples of how businesses and community groups can drive forward their green ambitions, improve their energy efficiency and reduce costs.

The benefits that green energy can deliver provide hope for a much brighter future for our districts and I hope that many of our businesses, community groups and parishes will attend the Local Energy Showcase to find out how pursuing environmentally-friendly practices can enable them to be more sustainable in the future.”

The event is being sponsored by businesses and organisations with a proactive approach to green energy including the University of Suffolk, Eastern New Energy and East of England Co-op.

Jazz at St Mary’s Church Chilton St Mary’s Church in Chilton is a beautiful red brick stone and flint 15th century church with a 16th century tower which had sat in the middle of fields and was only accessible by foot. Over the years the Industrial Estate has become a close neighbour which has meant access and parking enabling more people to visit.

The Church is open daily between 10am and 4pm and the Friends Group are now starting to put on events again. The first this year will be a Victorian Magic Lantern Show on Saturday 9th October at 7pm with free entry, then on Friday 22nd October at 8pm Jazz in the Church. This Jazz Saxophone and Piano duo from Scotland have had enormous success over many years including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and are now touring again in the UK. Tickets are £10 and free for under 16’s accompanied by an adult.
