Your photos wanted for Sudbury’s Heritage Open Days Weekend The Friends of St Peters, Sudbury are organising a Photography Day on 12 September from 11 am until 5 pm to coincide with the national Heritage Open Days weekend, an annual event that will see many historic building open their doors to the general public. The event is open to all and there is no charge, social distancing requirements may mean we have to limit numbers in the church at any one time.

As part of the Photography Day budding photographers are being urged to send in pictures they have taken around Sudbury, so they can be displayed as part of a special event being held at St Peter’s on 12 September. The pictures will form a video montage which will play throughout a Photography Day at Sudbury’s town centre church.

There will also be displays from local camera clubs, including Sudbury and Halstead and a demonstration of Victorian wet plate photography, parts of the church will be open that are not normally open for photographers including an opportunity for photographers to visit the church roof and take pictures. In addition, walking tours taking in the three medieval churches in Sudbury starting at St Peter’s and visiting St Gregory’s and All Saints - will be held.

The specially arranged day promises to be one not to miss for anyone interested in photography or heritage.

Since my last report 2 months ago a fair amount has changed in Sudbury, most who have visited the Town Centre could not help noticing the new planters along the south side of Market Hill which have replaced the ugly Barriers which were necessary in keeping people safe by following the Governments guidelines on social distancing. At the same time we were trying to avoid antagonising retailers, CafĂŠs and Restaurants, unfortunately you cannot please everybody all of the time, the Planters will give a bit of colour to the Town centre whilst at the same time allow the public to easily navigate across Market hill in a safe manner. It is not as simple ASĂ’ITĂ’SEEMSĂ’ANDĂ’WHENĂ’DEALINGĂ’WITHĂ’TRAFÂľCĂ’ISSUESĂ’THEĂ’#OUNTYĂ’HASĂ’AĂ’LARGEĂ’SAYĂ’INĂ’WHATĂ’ is possible, but hopefully we are moving in the right direction to keep most if not all happy.

There were bound to be some casualties with the close down of businesses for almost 4 months, but it must have come as a big shock to most people when Winch and Blatch announced their decision to pull out of the retail business in Sudbury, but several months earlier before the Pandemic hit us, they announced that they were closing some of their shops and consolidating in the ones they were keeping, so it should not have been a great surprise. Never the less, it’s an awful shame that our largest town centre retailer has decided to call it a day, many people will be disappointed, but with more and more people shopping on line it was always a risk.

I wish Richard & Julie all the best, they have been an important part of Sudbury for many years.

So the Government have decided to abandon the over 75s right to have a free TV License, now I know that as the Mayor I should keep away from politics, but I do have a vested interest being over that Age myself, but I am more concerned with the frail elderly people living on their own, who’s only comfort is the TV, what next, the free bus pass, free prescriptions, the elderly have been paying their taxes in most cases for over 60 years, so a little freebie when reaching the twilight of their lives is not so much to ask, is it? )ÒAMÒSOÒGLADÒTHEÒ+ING¾SHERÒ(EALTHÒ#ENTREÒISÒREOPENING ÒATÒLEASTÒTHEÒ'YMÒISÒWITHÒTHEÒ pool opening towards the end of August, I don’t know about you but I have been enjoying my food during the Pandemic and whilst the daily walk is helping, I need that extra bit of exercise.

Talking about food, my wife and I were the guest of Abbey King and his Wife Humera at the Lydia Turkish Restaurant where Hasan and his staff made us very welcome, WHILSTĂ’ITĂ’MAYĂ’BEĂ’DIFÂľCULTĂ’TOĂ’MAINTAINĂ’SOCIALĂ’DISTANCINGĂ’WHILSTĂ’ENJOYINGĂ’AĂ’GOODĂ’MEALĂ’ with excellent company, it can be done.

With the Manufacturing at Delphi coming to an end on the 31st of July, a considerable amount of sadness enveloped Sudbury and a fair portion of Suffolk as well, in its heyday when it was known as Lucas Diesel systems’ it employed 2,400 people, many of them from around Suffolk & Essex, those of us with many years of service will have many fond memories, CAV as it was previously called had the best wages and employment conditions not only in the Sudbury area but throughout Suffolk & Essex, we have enjoyed a decent Pension as well. When this Pandemic is beaten we need to have a get together, but it doesn’t look like it will be in the Delphy club, someone has nicked all the table and chairs! I’m not sure there is anywhere else in Sudbury that can host such a gathering, perhaps in the next issue with the help of some others, we can explain why it will always have a space in our memories, and talk about the many characters that passed through over the years!

I mentioned in the last edition that I was anxious to hold some charity events in support of my local charities, now I accept that I am past the stage in my life where I can run the marathon or even walk it, or climb Mount Everest or skydive from an aeroplane, but I am hoping to hold some coffee mornings and other activities within my capabilities so that I can meet up with people and raise some funds at the same time.

Each camera club will have a dedicated area in St Peter’s to show off their members works and members will be available to visitors to talk to them about all things photographic and what their club does.

To tie in with the heritage element of the day, Steve Le Grys, who specialises in Victorian wet plate photography, will be demonstrating at St Peter’s. Steve works in a very old Victorian era photographic process called Wet Collodion, which was invented in 1851, and has run demonstrations and into this process at venues such as the Royal Photographic Society’s headquarters in Bristol – see www.stevelegrys.co.uk.

Photographers will have access to parts of St Peter’s they have never seen before and this includes small group tours of the church roof. Hadleigh Nursing Home helps Hub project Jan Seal, manager of Hadleigh Nursing Home, in Friars Road, Hadleigh, handed over more than 70 “wellbeing� bags to town mayor Helen Allan at the opening of the Hub project.

The High Street Hub will be a centre for volunteer support in the community during the pandemic. The wellbeing bags, which will be distributed to elderly and vulnerable people locally contained gloves, face masks, hand sanitisers and a sweet treat.

Kingsley Healthcare regional operations director Georgina Johnston, who accompanied Mrs Seal at the launch, said: “As a company we have pledged to support both the hub and the local community with the provision of PPE and hand gel. “Our chef at Hadleigh Nursing Home will also be making meals for distribution in the community.�

A family litter picking scheme run by Sudbury y y Town Council’s community wardens, supported by y Babergh District Council, is set to ensure Sudbury remains one of Suffolk’s cleanest towns.

The Volunteer Litter Picking Scheme, which wass SF MBVODIFE CZ UIF $PNNVOJUZ 8BSEFOT EVSJOH lockdown in April 2020, has seen more than 50 local families sign up to borrow litter picking kit provided by Babergh District Council.

Rotary Club of Sudbury Despite social distancing and the inability to meet faceto-face, through its weekly Zoom meetings, Sudbury Rotary has learned more about one of its new members, heard from some of the good causes it supports and also managed a face-to-face picnic.

Members also took part in a street collection to raise funds for the Home of Hope in Lebanon, following the catastrophic explosion in the city of Beiruit. Sudbury Rotary supported the orphanage for three years, raising over £17,000 for them at that time, and wished to help in some small way EVSJOH UIF DVSSFOU DSJTJT XIFSF UIF DPTU PG MJWJOH IBT JODSFBTFE CZ making food very expensive, and the increased need for support of the children in Home of Hope, many of whom are Syrian refugees.

Introducing one of our new members At one of our recent Zoom meetings, Jerry Crawford, related a fascinating story of his life and career. He was born in Sri Lanka, where his father, IBWJOH JOJUJBMMZ IBE B DBSFFS JO UIF *OEJBO BSNZ EVSJOH 88** XFOU UP manage a tea plantation. Due to civil unrest the family returned to the UK in 1959.

Jerry explained that, although his education had been delayed, he managed to secure a place at Berkhamsted Public School - on the strength of character rather than academic ability! He completed his education in BOE BUUFOEFE )FOEPO 1PMJDF $PMMFHF QSJPS UP KPJOJOH UIF .FUSPQPMJUBO Police. He served in H division, based at Leman Street, covering the east of the City of London, where he met Anne who was training at the London )PTQJUBM 8IJUFDIBQFM )F MBUFS NPWFE UP &ENPOUPO 1PMJDF 4UBUJPO having completed his Police Sergeant exams, the youngest at the age of ZFBST +FSSZ SFMBUFE TPNF FWFOUT EVSJOH IJT QPMJDF DBSFFS BTTJTUJOH B colleague during a burglary where he was hanging over the edge of a roof, consequently developing a fear of heights; his involvement in 1974 during the bombing at the Tower of London and the mayhem that ensued; the riots at Lewisham and Notting Hill where the police were forced to use EVTUCJO MJET BT SJPUT TIJFMET UP QSPUFDU UIFNTFMWFT GSPN ÚZJOH NJTTJMFT )F resigned following a serious accident on duty and a long period of sick leave.

Jerry’s career then took a new path, working with the John Lewis Partnership BT "TTJTUBOU $IJFG 4FDVSJUZ 0GÙDFS GPS ÙWF ZFBST XIJDI JODMVEFE 8BJUSPTF security nationwide. His team won a contract to look after the swimming pool within the Palace.

Shelter Box One of the causes for which Sudbury Rotary has held street collections in the past is to raise funds for Shelter Box, which celebrates its 20th Birthday and has been applauded by HRH the Duchess of Cornwall, who is President and Royal Patron of ShelterBox . Her Royal Highness thanked Rotary for their pioneering achievements over the past 20 years and, in particular, this year with the additional challenges Covid-19 had brought to people who were facing the devastating pandemic as refugees. She saluted the heroic efforts to support people already battling for survival and expressed her heartfelt thanks to Rotary for offering practical help and a little hope on the long road to recovery.

The unprecedented health crisis has prevented outings from taking place and has resulted in a stark rise in domestic violence. Much of the work KidsOut does with children helps with the protection of their mental health.

However, social distancing measures have compounded the extreme isolation many of these children already face while in refuge, with most living through this crisis restricted to a single room with their mother and siblings.

A request was made to help provide Christmas Toy Boxes to the value of ÂŁ25. These gifts have a huge emotional impact on families. A key worker reported: ‘It has made such a difference and really lifted morale in the refuge. Strictly socially distanced and with everyone obeying the ‘rules’, it was a superb opportunity to meet up with Rotarians and their partners, taking our own picnic lunches and chatting, even at a distance. Although most of the Club’s planned fund-raising activities have been impacted by the pandemic, the Club is still supporting charities and toasted the work of St Nicholas Hospice to whom a donation of ÂŁ350 had been sent to purchase hearts and crosses, which are a comfort to patients and their families. The chance to see each other again was welcomed and everyone enjoyed the event.

Like many households, we have completed lots of maintenance jobs during the lockdown and social distancing. Being a rather particular cat, I have stayed away during this time. The precocious chihuahua trots around, inspecting the works then trails cobwebs, dust and mud indoors.

This month something should be happening that has occurred at around this time of every year of my life, and probably every year of most readers’ lifetimes – TDIPPMT UISPXJOH PQFO UIFJS EPPST BHBJO BGUFS UIF TVNNFS CSFBL 8IBUFWFS NJY of emotions parents, teachers and pupils may usually feel about September’s return to the classroom, on this occasion the critical issue is fairly fundamental.

Quite simply, the very act of getting all our children back into school is a national necessity of the greatest import.

On top of compelling economic arguments, the main reason to welcome pupils back into the classroom is social. It is well documented that children in the most vulnerable households are most exposed to the fallout of not resuming their TDIPPMJOH 4PVUI 4VGGPML NBZ DPOUBJO NBOZ ÙOF IPVTFT BOE BQQFBS QSPTQFSPVT on the surface for the most part, but I know from my pre-Coronavirus surgeries and visits around the patch that there are pockets of deprivation and families for whom life is a struggle. In those households, I do worry profoundly about what will have happened during lockdown without the ability for children to receive schooling, to mix with friends and thus ease some of the pressure on those looking after them.

I know that some will be nervous about the public health implications of fully SFPQFOJOH TDIPPMT *O UIF NFEJB XF IBWF TFFO B DPOÚJDUJOH SBOHF PG SFQPSUT about the health risk, or otherwise, of children returning (especially in every year group). To such concerns I would make two particular points. First, there will be a price to pay if children don’t return to school. Secondly, we have real FYQFSJFODF UP ESBX PO 4VGGPML $PVOUZ $PVODJM IBWF DPOÙSNFE UP NF UIBU TJODF 1st June there have been no incidences of Coronavirus spreading in school/ nursery settings.

I was fortunate that 3 of my 4 children were in year groups that returned to school in June, and I saw the incredibly positive impact it had on them and their fellow pupils. It’s time for all our school-age children to share that experience again.

The rolling 5 year plan is a dynamic document in which new schemes can be added and ranked by the potential numbers of cyclists and the value for money (using the government recommended toolsets).

Homes Sweet Homes – multi-million pound investment in social housing Babergh District Council has secured a deal for 45 new-build homes in Sudbury this month to help low-income house-hunters – part of a multimillion pound investment in council housing across the district.

Amongst current developments on council-owned land is the transformation of the former Angel Court care home in Hadleigh. Babergh District Council bought the property from Suffolk County Council when the home closed in 2014 in order to transform the site into new homes UP IFMQ UIPTF TUSVHHMJOH UP Ă™OE TVJUBCMF IPNFT JO )BEMFJHI 5IF OFX POF BOE UXP CFESPPN ĂšBUT XJMM BMM FJUIFS CF IPNFT UIBU BSF BEEFE UP UIF council’s housing stock for social rent; made available for ‘affordable rent’ (in other words below private rental market rates); or to buy as shared ownership homes. The development managed by Iceni Homes and being built by Pentaco Construction, are due for completion in April 2021. .FBOXIJMF PUIFS 4 QVSDIBTFT BDSPTT UIF EJTUSJDU JODMVEF FJHIU IPNFT at nearby King George’s View, Raydon, through developer Landex. Six new council houses already have tenants, while contracts are due for exchange for the two shared ownership homes later this month.

Over at Sproughton, the council is in contract with developer Taylor 8JNQFZ GPS BGGPSEBCMF IPNFT PO UIF 8PMTFZ (SBOHF FTUBUF DVSSFOUMZ under construction. Due for completion in March 2021, 23 homes will be available for social rent, and six for shared ownership.

The council has also bought eight properties on Marden Homes’ Osier View development in Bears Lane, Lavenham. Tenants have already moved in to two affordable rental homes and sales have been agreed on two shared equity houses – with new home-owners looking forward to collecting their keys later this year. The remaining plots – all destined to be homes for affordable rent – are also due to be ready to move into during autumn.

Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for housing, Cllr Jan Osborne, said: “This isn’t just about bricks and mortar – 158 new homes over the next three years means 158 lower income families having somewhere affordable that they are proud to call home. As a local authority we have a responsibility to plan and invest to ensure our communities have the homes they need. I wish all our future tenants and new home-owners across our district, every happiness in their new homes.�
