Work begins on new attraction at Sudbury’s Belle Vue Park On Monday 17th September work began on a new Multi-Use Games Area and skate park in Belle Vue Park, Sudbury.

Town and District councillors and Babergh ofďŹ cers joined Caloo the contractor commissioned by Babergh District Council, at the park to mark the breaking of the ground.

The ďŹ rst phase will concentrate on the new games area, providing an enclosed tarmac surface for park users to play games such as Five-a-Side Football and Basketball.

Continued from the front page After this is completed in early October, work will continue on the new skate/BMX park, replacing the previous skate park with an up to date facility consisting of a sprayed concrete flow-style skate/BMX park. Facilities will be opened to the public following completion of the skate/BMX park later this year.

The work comes after a long period of planning and community engagement, which saw Babergh District Council work with the Town Council, community groups and skate park users to identify the right facilities for Belle Vue Park.

Cllr Jan Osborne, Deputy Leader of Babergh District Council, told Jason (Sudbury Community News): “We’ve been working with the community here in Sudbury for a long time to be sure we understand what is needed, what is used and what residents want in Belle Vue Park. The work starting today is the result of a lot of hard work by everyone involved, which has been instrumental in driving the project forward. I want to thank the community groups and residents who have taken part and brought us to this stage. I can’t wait to come back and see these facilities open and in use by the people of Sudbury by the end of the year.”

Cllr Margaret Maybury, Babergh District Cabinet Member for Communities, added: “Belle Vue Park has been loved and cherished by users over decades. Our young people have asked for and engaged with Councillors, to develop new and modern games and sports areas. We have now put a spade into the area of Belle Vue Park where a new MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) will be built. This work will be followed by the construction of a new Skate Park for our active community to use.”

Dream of A Safe Haven Dream of A Safe Haven (DASH) is helping to care for and re-home stray and abandoned dogs in the Peloponnese region of mainland Greece.

We are holding a charity event on 21st October with Tuxedo singing at Sudbury Snooker Club, everybody is welcome.

The DASH sanctuary is based in Messini and, like many in Greece and indeed other southern European countries, has too many dogs, too few staff, and relies solely on donations to help provide food, veterinary care, shelter and rehabilitation costs.

DASH is part of the Kalamata Welfare Group and is supported by GAR (Greek Animal Rescue) but is reliant upon the generosity and support of animal loving nations - in particular the United Kingdom - from where much of the fund-raising activity is co-ordinated and donations in kind, such as food, bedding and material for building shelters and kennels are received and shipped to Messini on a regular basis.

As the tide of abandoned and neglected dogs continues to rise, DASH is committed to highlighting the issue and enlisting ever more support for its endeavours.

Big Band returns to Sudbury for “Upbeat� Charity Night Following the success of last year’s sparkle dance, the big band “Swing Machine� from Ipswich will be returning to the Delphi Centre on Saturday 29th December. The dance is a Masquerade black tie evening with music stretching from the 1920’s through to the 1960’s. A special 1940’s section with most of the Glenn Miller favourites will be included. The band comprising 17 musicians including a female and male vocalist proved a big hit last December. Rotary in Sudbury The emphasis for Sudbury Rotary in August and September was very much on the charities which it supports, although members and their partners also enjoyed the usual lunch-time meetings as well as Picnic and Pimms in the garden of Brian and Elizabeth Tora one Saturday afternoon in September.

On August 13, past President, Lesley Ford-Platt, was delighted to hand over cheques to the two local charities which the Club had agreed to support during her year in office: £2,632 for the Kernos Centre to help meet the costs of counselling for young people, for which there is growing demand, and £3,000 to Compassion, which supports the victims of domestic violence; the donation will be used to help fund their Stronger Families project, which costs £5,000 a year to run.

New President, Tony Platt, hopes to raise funds for three local charities in his year: East Anglian Air Ambulance, Befriending and the Richmond Fellowship, alongside the Club’s international charities. These include supporting the education of two primary school children in East Meru, Tanzania Prosper Peter (pictured) and Loveness, and skills training for two teenagers at the Kado Foundation in Mali.

Sudbury Rotary also regularly loans money through the Lend With Care scheme, which is designed to help entrepreneurs in developing countries to set up or expand their business ideas, and thus make a living for themselves and their families, repaying the money loaned in small amounts over time. Loans totalling £2,640 from Sudbury Rotary have so far helped 244 entrepreneurs, 556 family members and have created 111 jobs.

The most recent loans have been made to a group in Zimbabwe running a shop, a baker in Peru, a farming group in Vietnam and a retail health operation in the Palestinian Territories. There is increasing demand for financial support to help people become self-sufficient. The total loaned

by Clubs in Rotary District 1080, of which Sudbury is a member, has now reached £225,876.

So that more men and women from Sudbury and its surrounding villages can become involved in Rotary if they wish, the Sudbury Rotary Community Forum has begun meeting, early evening in the Mill Hotel bar. The Forum meets on a very informal basis, once a fortnight. In October the meetings will take place on Tuesdays 2 and 16, starting around 7.30 p.m. For more information please call Roger Green on 07787 470876.

I am sorry to say there is not much left for outings this year, pleased to say day trips and holidays are fully booked, but I have had, through illnesses, a few having to drop out of coming to Snape Maltings for the Co-op Juniors show and a seasonal 2/3 course Sunday hotel lunch on 9th December.

Sudbury’s Hamilton Road plans approved by councillors

In September I was honoured to be appointed to a new role, as PPS to the Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt. A PPS (Parliamentary Private Secretary) is the link between the Secretary of State and MPs from all parties. It is a particular privilege to be part of the Foreign Office team given the department’s role of advancing our national interest around the world.

The scheme will turn the Hamilton Road quarter into a “culture and leisure space”, with new homes, restaurants, shops and a cinema.

It is thought the preferred developers will be identified early next year, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

Sudbury South councillor Simon Barrett said it was a “big deal” for the town.

On the majority of foreign policy issues there tends to be a consensus, with little dispute on the way our relations should proceed in most countries, and MPs tend to unite when confronted with terrible humanitarian crises overseas, such as in Syria or Rakhine state, Burma.

But of course, there are many more controversial issues: notably Brexit, but also the long-running Palestinian question, and how we respond to President Trump and Russian aggression.

Keeping Ministers aware of the direction that opinion is forming on the full gamut of issues is a key responsibility of a PPS. For example, at the time of writing we have encouraging signs in Syria with Turkey and Russia seemingly agreeing a ‘buffer zone’ to protect the remaining rebel enclave of Idlib. Were this agreement to break down, the international temperature would rise – and so would concern in the House. This would be particularly so if chemical weapons were deployed again. Let us hope such further horror can be avoided.

Whilst all of the issues facing the Foreign and Commonwealth Office ultimately affect the people of South Suffolk, I am confident that my new role will not in any way diminish my ability to campaign on the home front. A particular priority at present is the rural economy, given that the Agriculture Bill comes before the House in October, promising a new era for how we subsidise and support our farmers. My stance has always been that we should maintain an equivalent version of the current system until a better one is in place. Quite simply, whether at home or abroad, food production or foreign affairs, we need to apply good old fashioned common sense and resist the temptation of divisive ideology.

The plans will see the area around Hamilton Road - including the former bus station and Borehamgate Centre - completely overhauled.

Babergh District Council’s cabinet approved the blueprint on Thursday after years of discussions.

Conservative Mr Barrett, who is also the council’s cabinet member for economy, said it was “a great opportunity for Sudbury”.

“It means we are serious. We are going to the market,” he said.

The plans are part of the Vision for Prosperity for Sudbury, which will see a £1.4m revamp of the Kingfisher Leisure Centre and a new hotel built at Belle Vue Park.

A number of new homes on the Chilton Woods development are also due to be completed by 2020, while a multi-million pound gallery and museum at Gainsborough House will open by 2021.

Now back to the animals awaiting new homes, particularly a little puss called Marti who has been with us for six months.

She arrived pregnant but the kittens are all weaned and she is ready for an adult only home where she would be the only cat.

This year the focus is on Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World. The Campaign focuses on many issues including the negative effects of living in a digital age, the concerns that suicide and substance abuse numbers are steadily rising and LGBTQ youth are feeling persecuted. The teenage years can be a time when mental health issues rise to the fore, but little is done to help understand or cope with them, or even talk about them, let alone build resilience or coping strategies.

One organisation locally are doing what they can to respond to some of the issues surrounding young people in Sudbury in order to promote better mental health awareness (Emotional Wellbeing) through action and support.

The Just Talk Campaign based in Sudbury, is a registered Charity that focuses on raising awareness to help those in need. Their aim is to eradicate the stigma that surrounds mental health difficulties. They believe that being able to talk openly about these issues is vital.

The Just Talk Campaign offers free drop in group sessions which run monthly where you are able to talk about anything that concerns you in a safe and confidential environment. The Just Talk Campaign also want to challenge some of the jargon surrounding issues regarding ill health and are keen to promote the use of terminology such as “emotional wellbeing”. Glenda D Roberts is an accredited Psychotherapist, member of the BACP and founder of the campaign in Sudbury. She insists this is important because in order to change people’s views on “emotional wellbeing” we need to change the stigma surrounding it.

The aim is to encourage people to just talk openly about any issues that may be affecting them and to feel comfortable doing this.

Dog Show Celebrates 10 Years of Fun Bigger and better than ever, the Fun Dog Show in Wickham St Paul attracted over 200 people and raised £1456 for All Saints Church and Guide Dogs for the Blind on its 10th Anniversary.

Record numbers of dog lovers flocked to Wickham St Paul ‘Fun Dog Show’ on 8 September. Angela Johnstone, who organises the annual show said: “I wanted this year to be the best one ever to celebrate its 10th Anniversary.”

To make this happen she encouraged local businesses to offer their services or assist with the cost of putting on the show. In addition some individuals sponsored a class in memory of a dog they have lost or one to remember.

Attractions included pet portrait artist Trudy Harman, face painting, Szildis bakes with her amazing cakes and Suffolk Metal Crafts showcasing crafty ways to hang up your dog lead. Local charities were also at hand to raise awareness of their services such as Sesaw, who rescue and care for lost and rescued dogs, K9 Ambulance and Guide Dogs for the blind.

Categories for this year included twelve different classes from Best Pedigree, to Fastest Sausage Eater. New to the dog show was the Dog Most Like Its Owner and the Best Fancy Dress class, encouraging participants to use their imagination and get creative.

Best in Show was won by Delilah Kemp with Poppy the Jackapoo and the Best in Show Reserve was won by Jacquie Surman with retired Guide Dog, Peter the Golden Labrador aged 9.

The Phoenix Collective The much loved and supported Phoenix Players at the Quay Theatre in Sudbury continues this September under a new name and a new director. Rachel Bennett who has had a career in inclusive theatre for over 20 years, promises to work hard to build on the strengths and friendships that the current group offers. The Phoenix Collective will take place on Fridays at the Jetty down at the Quay from 4.15/6.15pm “I am very excited to be given this opportunity to work within the Sudbury community to provide inclusive, fun and engaging theatre experiences for all. Theatre is very much a process and whilst we may celebrate our success at the end with a show, along the way it can provide very real opportunities to develop in many areas including confidence, creativity, teamwork, communication and life skills.”

Man and Boy Coming next from Sudbury Dramatic Society, based at Sudbury’s Quay Theatre, is Man and Boy by Terence Rattigan which is on at The Quay Theatre from Tuesday 6th to Saturday 10th November The ‘Man and Boy’ of the title are Gregor and his estranged son Basil.

When ruthless businessman Gregor turns up on Basil’s doorstep, seeking sanctuary from a damaging and corrupt business deal, his son is forced to confront the impact that his father has had on his life. What is he willing to sacrifice for family loyalty?

Although Man and Boy was written in 1964 the play resonates as much today, touching on high finance and shady deals, the pulling of political strings, blackmail, sexual impropriety as well as the pull of loyalty between family members and people who have shared secrets and dubious working practices.

Man and Boy is being directed by Nick Elliott who has been seen many times on the Quay stage, most recently as an outrageous drag queen in Ladies Down Under, and is now making his directorial debut for Sudbury Dramatic Society.

His technical skills are outstanding and he is a long standing master of his chosen instrument. His performing style goes far with a deep understanding of the roots of Jazz.

Paul Booth is one of the most in demand saxophonists on the international scene today. He first played tenor saxophone in public at age 11.Still in his teens he was playing with Jazz luminaries such as Spike Robinson. He then studied at the Royal Academy of Music going on to win the award for Most Promising Jazz Player Of The Year Under 21. Since then he has played with many other top Jazz musicians as well as his own groups.

Steve Hamilton studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He then moved to London where he became the most in-demand pianist across the genres performing with legends such as Freddie Hubbard and Gary Burton.

Dave Whitford started playing the bass guitar aged 13. Soon after he held the bass chair in the Cornwall Youth Jazz Orchestra and found himself working in many musical settings and working with many well known Jazz musicians and playing at all the important venues and festivals.

Ronnie Scott has likened saxophonist Paul Booth’s style to that of the late Tubby Hayes - and John Fordham to the lyricism of Stan Getz and John Coltrane. A gig not to be missed.

Joanna Eden presents a ‘labour of love’ show celebrating the music of her vocal hero Ella Fitzgerald. From the throw-away A Tisket A Tasket which brought Ella to fame in the forties with the Chick Webb Orchestra to later songbook album classics like Porter’s Every Time We Say Goodbye and Gershwin’s Someone to Watch Over Me , Eden mines the rich seam of Ella Fitzgerald’s unrivalled canon with humility, style and obvious deep affection. Lincolnshire born Joanna wrote and performed her first song Happy December age seven. Berkley scholarship winner, Frank, recalls listening to Billie Holiday recordings, aged 11, and thinking out how the harmony and melodies worked. In his formative years he did the same for successive jazz styles.

Brigitte Beraha is one of the most versatile and exciting vocalists to emerge on the UK jazz scene. Brigitte appeared at the Fleece in 2012 with Chris Allard and was here in April with John Turville’s Solstice. Brigitte has sung with leading musicians from Peter King to Gwillym Simcock, and is associated with London’s Loop collective. She leads workshops in US and across Europe. Frank and Brigitte have been performing together for about 5 years. They will include work from the album “The Way Homeâ€?, released this year. Councils call for Power Companies to co-ordinate

The “Staying Close” scheme was launched on Thursday 9 August.

The aim of the scheme is to help young people from the age of 15 start planning for independent living with the assistance and support of residential care workers. This planning often only occurs close to the time a young person is due to move-out, causing unnecessary anxiety and distress. Early intervention and detailed planning from a younger age should help to alleviate this.

A joint statement from Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Coastal District Council, calling for better coordination of power project planning in east Suffolk.

Suffolk local authorities have used the response to Scottish Power Renewables current consultation to call for energy firms to co-ordinate their work plans better – to reduce the disruption of their project on local communities.

In a joint response, Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Coastal District Council have highlighted the power company’s plan to site a substation in Friston, despite fierce local opposition, as an example of the piecemeal approach to the planning of these projects – and how local needs are being ignored. East Suffolk is becoming increasingly important nationally for providing electricity for the nation – with a series of major projects in the pipeline.

Estimates suggest that this area will be responsible for a quarter of the country’s electricity supply by the 2030s. But the infrastructure projects to generate and produce this electricity obviously have a major effect on the environment and the local communities.

Young people will also continue to receive emotional and practical support from their children’s home and residential workers after they have moved out and started living independently.

Now, in responding to the current consultation being run by Scottish Power Renewables, the local authorities have highlighted the cumulative effect of all these projects – and appealed for the power companies to work together to minimise the disruption.

The pilot scheme is being delivered in partnership with The Ryes Children’s Home in Sudbury, to test how this move-on care can be provided for young people who want to remain living close to their home.

The local authorities have also raised the issue directly in a very positive meeting with Rt Hon Claire Perry MP, Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth and the local MP Therese Coffey.

Reduction in recycling rates harm “Greenest County” ambitions Recycling rates in Suffolk have dropped over the past 4 years, from 51% in 2013 to just 47% in 2017. Meanwhile, over 50% of waste in Suffolk is incinerated – much higher than the national average of 38%.

Although incineration may be a better option than landfill, it is still less environmentally-friendly than other methods of waste disposal.

Furthermore, there are concerns that the level of harmful particles released by incinerators could pose a serious threat to public health.

The Suffolk Waste Partnership, as part of the Greenest County Partnership, set a target of recycling at least 60% of municipal waste by 2020. These latest figures suggest we are moving further away from this target. If Suffolk County Council truly wants Suffolk to be the “greenest county”, we need to start focusing on environmentally-friendly methods of waste disposal and ways to increase recycling levels in the county.

Superfast Broadband coverage continues to grow Superfast broadband coverage continues to increase (currently over 93%) as it was confirmed that 98% coverage will be achieved in 2020.

Councillor Matthew Hicks, Leader of Suffolk County Council, Jo Churchill, MP for Bury St Edmunds and Clive Selley, CEO of Openreach, were joined by representatives from West Suffolk Council, Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, Church of England, Country Land and Business Association (CLA), National Farmers Union (NFU) and the Better Broadband for Suffolk Team to confirm plans to reach 98% coverage in 2020.

Nine out of every 10 homes and businesses in Suffolk now have superfast broadband available. The Better Broadband for Suffolk programme has provided an additional 967 structures providing superfast broadband to over 110,000 premises that were not in commercial plans. This takes to total superfast broadband coverage to over 93%.

In addition to the existing Sizewell B nuclear power stations and substations for the Galloper and Greater Gabbard offshore wind farms, the area is now expecting the Sizewell C nuclear power station plus two sub-stations for Scottish Power Renewables East Anglia Offshore 2 and 1 (North) schemes; two inter-continental connector converter stations for National Grid Ventures and a single major National Grid Transmission substation connecting these to the pylon lines.

The issue has been particularly highlighted during this round of consultation

by Scottish Power Renewables, which is ignoring calls by the local authorities to review its decision to place its substation in Friston – meaning 5 miles of countryside will needlessly have to be dug up for cables to reach the substation and there may be multiple huge buildings.

Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Coastal have worked together to prepare this joint response to the Scottish Power Renewables consultation.

These developments are seen very much as game changers, as part of a wider package of economic development investments in the area that the Councils want to embrace and support whilst acknowledging that to do this comprehensively, for the future benefit of the area needs the support of Government to help get it right.

The Councils state they support and embrace the principle of low carbon energy generation and the trading of energy across a European wide transmission network and want to help them be delivered if the local dividend is for the benefit of the whole area.

Therefore the Councils are committed to working together to ensure that where such schemes are brought forward they will have a positive impact on Suffolk, and East Suffolk in particular; supporting significant local growth by delivering:

The roll out is ongoing and Suffolk County Council is committed to delivering full coverage as quickly as possible.

It is important to remind people that a switch to fibre broadband is not automatic. Each household or business will need to contact an internet service provider to upgrade their connection.

Review into the Upper Orwell Crossings On 1 August, Cllr Matthew Hicks, Leader of Suffolk County Council, launched a review into the cost of building the Upper Orwell Crossings in Ipswich.

The project is still in the planning stages, but an internal review of costs has forecast that the total cost of completing the Crossings could be significantly higher than the original calculation of £97m. The Department for Transport committed to fund approximately three-quarters of the original cost, but if the total cost increases it is unlikely that they will provide any more funding. The additional funding would therefore need to come from local sources.

Work on the project has been temporarily suspended whilst the review is undertaken, with an outcome expected by the end of 2018.

Harry is changing the way students can seek mental health support with an online service dedicated to the memory of his twin brother.

Harry launched ‘Chat with Charlie’ at the University of Essex after his twin brother Charlie took his own life. The online service gives students the opportunity to start a conversation about their mental wellbeing in a completely safe and anonymous online environment. The platform lets people take a confidential first step to accessing support which is signposted by Harry’s trained volunteers. Harry, who set up the ‘Charlie Watkins Foundation’ to carry out his work, has collaborated with the University and mental health charity ‘MIND’, raising £25,000 to fund the project. Harry’s award coincides with the World Health Organisation’s Suicide Prevention Day. James Cartlidge said: “I was so pleased to hear this news because it’s incredibly well deserved. As a father of twin boys I cannot imagine the grief this loss must have caused Harry and his family, and it is a testament to his character that he then used that traumatic experience to set up a charity to avoid others falling into the same situation. I look forward to meeting Harry soon to hear more about his superb effort and the fully merited top level recognition it has now earned, in the form of a Point of Light award from the Prime Minister.”

Harry told Sudbury Community News: “I am extremely honoured to be receiving such an important award. I am hugely grateful for the recognition of work I have done with the ‘Charlie Watkins Foundation’. It is our aim at the ‘Charlie Watkins Foundation’ to support younger people who are suffering with mental health and to make sure nobody is suffering in silence.”

Harry is the 996th winner of the Points of Light award, which has been developed in partnership with the hugely successful Points of Light programme in the USA. Over 6,000 Points of Light have been awarded in the USA, and former Presidents have publicly supported the partnership with Points of Light UK. There is a similar cross-party approach to the UK programme and MPs from different parties often present their constituents with their Points of Light awards.

Regardless of whether it’s a doctor restoring local monuments in her free time, a father teaching young people life skills, or a local musician giving a voice to lonely people, the Points of Light award honours shining examples of volunteering across the UK.

Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club News Colne Valley Golf Club was the neutral venue for this Jubilee cup Semi-final between Stoke-By-Nayland GC and Benton Hall GC. Both teams had done fantastically well to reach this stage of the competition and once the team photos, registrations etc. were done it was time to get down to business. In the early stages it was Benton Hall who seemed to be handling the tricky, fast greens the best, with putting being a huge factor. Up to the half way point and with nothing to split the teams, it looked like it was going to go to the wire. But with only 4 or 5 holes remaining in the singles matches the scoreboard started to turn in favour of Stoke-By-Nayland. The last few holes proved decisive and in the end it was Stoke-By-Nayland who ran out 6.5 - 2.5 winners. As usual, the score was not a true reflection of how close the match was. There were wins in the single’s for Dean Brace, Kevan Priestland, Byron Long, Richard Fryer, Trevor Warren and Tim Dickens. These 5 points, from a possible 6, on their own secured the match and took the pressure off the three pairs matches where there was a half for Andrew Hately / Paul Raison and narrow defeats for Steve Martin / Roger Gardiner, and Liam Worsdell / Norman Davidson. Stoke-By-Nayland continue to the final in their effort to retain the trophy they won last year.

On the 3rd of September a very good field from the senior section played September Monthly Stableford held in conjunction with the Seniors Veterans’ Cup. With ideal weather conditions for good golf, Division 1 was won

by Phil Hickley, who with 41 points nudged out Tony Carman on countback. In Jim Pearl, seniors captain Division 2 congratulations to John Wheatley, and Phil Hickley Jimmy Pearl, with 37 points, just one point ahead of John Russell. Jimmy Pearl also took the Senior Veterans’ Cup, open only to members who have succeeded in making it to 70.

A few days earlier, the senior committee had a very good day at Gog Magog golf course in Cambridgeshire for the annual Stoke-By-Nayland Seniors Committee Cup. The course is a very highly regarded course and was in very good condition, particularly the tees and greens. 15 SBN Senior committee members or previous committee members competed for the trophy - a nice way of saying thanks to both old and current committee members for their efforts towards the success of the SBN Seniors Section.

Congratulations go to current committee member, Barry Hitchcock with an excellent 41 points, just shading it from Allen Brown and Peter Jay – both with 39 points.

Newcomers claim Princess Diana Trophy The Stoke by Nayland Golf Club Committee have been very keen to encourage more members to play in mixed golf competitions. Participants have been canvassed to find the most popular formats and this has resulted in a variety being tried by Captains Alan Line and Elaine Davidson.

Reciprocal golf deal for Newton Green members

The Newton Green pairing of professional Tim Cooper and Suffolk second eleven scratch player Jed Seeley have won a prestigious invitation charity day at Sunningdale.

Membership at Newton will give eight days out of golf at Clacton, Rushmere (Ipswich), Thorpe Hall (Southend) and Theydon Bois.

Newton Green Golf Club has joined the ranks of those that give members extra value for money for their subscriptions.

It has linked with a group of four other clubs that offer free reciprocal golf twice a year at any of the participating clubs.

The couple were two shots ahead of their nearest rivals nd new courses at the famous in the 36-hole event held over both the old and venue.

The day was in aid of the Jude Brady Foundation, an organisation that Newton members have supported in the past.

Cooper and Seeley hardly put a foot wrong all day, and dropped only one shot to par over both courses.

The better ball competition saw them record 40 Stableford points round the old course and 44 on the new, with gross scores of 66 and 62.

Stoke by Nayland Ladies Vets Captains Day The theme for this year’s Lady Vets Captain’s day was ‘Bring a Friend’.

Several guests joined us for the day. The competition was ďŹ ercely contested, with the top three scores being very close.

Ben Tawell, club manager, said the initiative was aimed at rewarding the loyalty of its own members, and also bringing into membership nonattached players who enjoyed the freedom of one-off special offers at clubs in the region.

He continued: “You cannot get much better value for money than absolutely free golf which we can now offer to those who like to enjoy a good day out. “We are about to launch short-term autumn deals for potential new members, and the new exibility of our reciprocal golf for those prepared to become permanent members is a very attractive deal.â€?

Alistair Cook a ďŹ ne example to SPORT I was speaking to Geoff Newman my Two Counties CC Manager this evening, a lifelong Member of Maldon CC, and he conďŹ rmed the story of Alistair Cook and his ďŹ rst game for MALDON CC. At Maldon CC at that time Geoff was Club Captain and his son was the captain of Maldon Third team.

His son was short of a player and so went down to the Colts netting session that evening. At the session he asked if any of the colts could play, up jumped a small 11year old who said he was available and further volunteered he could open the batting, bowl off breaks and also keep wicket. That Saturday at the Prom Ground in Maldon, son of Geoff won the toss, and turned to the 11 year old Alistair Cook and said you can open the batting. Alistair went onto score 64, and at the age of 14 was playing in the East Anglian Premier, League. Then Essex CC turned up in the form of Keith Fletcher to see him play for Maldon ďŹ rst team, and on a difďŹ cult wicket Alistair Cook went onto make a century. Needless to say cricket then transferred to Essex Cricket Club. This true story should serve as an inspiration to every young sportsman!

On days when there is no event in the Church, the Friends of St Peters operate an Open Doors programme. Weather and availability permitting, volunteer Stewards will welcome visitors between 11 am and 3 pm. In addition the Bridge Project runs a pop up café in St Peters on many days when there is no booked event.
