The Mayor writes...

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, I always think of the first line of the poem ‘Autumn’ by John Keats as the nights begin to draw in. By the time you read this we will be starting to switch electric blankets on, grapple with central heating and stock up with logs for the log burner, if we have one. I used to love this season when teaching, lots of lovely messy autumnal pictures, collages with the variety of colourful leaves and ‘The Nature Table’. One year I arranged a lovely arrangement of wheat and barley, only to receive a severe ticking off from our caretaker for encouraging mice! I recently discovered that the word autumnal originated from an Etruscan term meaning ‘drying up season’, I also found that people born during autumn months are more likely to become centenarians and that the vibrant ambers, reds and yellows of autumn leaves are from the same chemicals that give carrots and egg yolks their colours.

The wonderful staff from Hillside Care Home invited me to their ‘Fun Day’ on Bank Holiday Monday, and we did indeed have fun; everyone pulled out all the stops to ensure that whatever the age or lack of movement, they did have an enjoyable afternoon. Ben, a super young singer guitarist entertained with a wide range of songs, Hazel the cook provided some of the tastiest muffins that I could not resist. I have enormous respect for managers and carers in our Care Homes. They definitely do not undertake this vital work for their salaries; however, an enormous amount of dedication, patience and expertise was evident. A huge well done for making it an incredibly special day.

I seem to have spent a lot of time in St Peter’s Church in the past few weeks, the closing down party was a great success with many of those who have supported and raised funds for the exciting improvements for the major face-lift this beautiful historical building. The Sudbury Choral Society performed a concert for the first time in two years. We had a maximum audience with Covid restrictions being carefully observed. The concert was free, however, those who attended donated just over an amazing £500 to Sudbury Rotary Club for local charities We have started to rehearse for our Christmas Concert which will be in St Gregory’s Church in December and 948-007-AddASplashOfColour-SCN-95x135point5mm-PWS.indd 1 will be performing ‘St Nicolas’ by Sir Benjamin Britten. Another Christmas tradition that will be held in St Gregory’s Church will be the 19th Christmas Tree Festival organised by Sudbury Rotary Club which will be from 7th to 11th of December. Fully qualified - no job too small

Another joyous evening was spent at the Quay Theatre watching ‘Joking Apart’ written be Alan Ayckbourn and performed by Sudbury Amateur Dramatic Society. We are so fortunate to have such a super Theatre in our Town. I am looking forward to the variety of shows due to be held in the autumn leading up to the Pantomime. I love going to a Pantomime, they are always great fun whatever your age.

Finally, a huge thanks to so many businesses, restaurants, cafes, and volunteers who made the Heritage Weekends so successful. Our Sudbury Town Manager Rachel Price and Sue Gale who came out of retirement had worked tirelessly to ensure that everything went smoothly. I was involved in the “Taste the World in Sudbury” that involved an amazing array of foods from our diverse cafes, restaurants and eateries. Baklavas and succulent feta cheese parcels and Pide Ekmek from Lydia’s Restaurant, Spam Fritters from the “Strawberry Teapot”, afternoon teas from The Mill Hotel, South African Koeksisters and Boerewors’ from “Painters Café”, Fresh Macarons provided by “The Secret Garden”, a variety of Woodfired Pizzas and Dough Triangles from Dough & Co and sweets from Mr F’s Traditional Sweet Shop.

It was a wonderful opportunity to meet many visitors to our Town, they were so complimentary and thought our Town was “Just the best”. A gentleman from Halstead brought some family pictures in of his greatgrandmother who was the young girl in a painting that hangs in the Mayor’s Parlour. It was a memorable day indeed. A huge thanks to everyone concerned.

Our new season of monthly illustrated talks has begun and is being streamed live via Zoom. The talks are given by experts - you may even recognise some from The Antiques Roadshow, others as broadcasters on Radios 3 and 4 - chosen for their knowledge, presentational skills and entertainment value, on topics ranging from the art of the young Picasso; 20th century glass; to Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.

We are a group of people who are interested in and enjoy the arts in general.

Our Society is affiliated to the national charity The Arts Society and our aim, through talks and occasional visits, is to broaden our knowledge and enjoyment of the arts in its widest form.

News from The Christopher Centre This month’s focus is on two of our ‘in house groups ‘Open House at The Christopher Centre and The Christopher Centre Community Singers.

Open House: This is a drop in group every Monday from 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come along. The group was formed to help combat isolation and to encourage social interaction and friendships to develop.

Open House is a relaxed and friendly group with male and female members and a fabulous team of volunteers to welcome you. Its a place to chat, relax and enjoy homemade refreshments, tea, coffee etc.

Every week we have Emma from Realise Futures joining us. Emma helps with many problems that may crop up for those suffering from mental health issues in general and autism in particular.

The morning session is followed by a homemade lunch from 12 noon.

There is no charge for this group, but donations are always welcome.

Christopher Centre Community Singers: This is a group of enthusiastic singers that sing for enjoyment, no previous experience needed.

The group meets every Tuesday evening *While stocks lastfrom 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and welcomes new members to come along.

The group was formed for the enjoyment of the members and to take community singing into nursing and residential homes for the elderly and community spaces.

Just Talk Mind and Body

JustTalk2019, a counselling service based in Sudbury, is excited to launch its new initiative of Just Talk Mind and Body.

Over the past year and a half, the country has been in the midst of a pandemic which has taken its toll on not only the physical health but also the mental health of both children and adults. Just Talk 2019 is a non profit making arm of ExploringU Counselling, and provides affordable counselling for those who cannot afford to pay the usual hourly rates of a qualified counsellor. It does this by offering sessions with trainee counsellors, therefore also supporting a new generation of counsellors starting out in this crucial area. Just Talk 2019, relies on donations to its bridge fund in order to be able to subsidise the counselling provided to those who desperately need it. Some of the trainee counsellors and their families have recently held sponsored walks to help raise money to keep this vital service going.

JustTalk2019 are now expanding their service to also include holistic treatments for disabled and able bodied people, offering full body massage, facials, Indian head massage, deep tissue massage and hot stones massage. The experienced therapist will be using natural plant-based products that are also vegan friendly and will be providing treatments on Wednesdays at the ExploringU Centre for Well Being in Sudbury.

When she began Just Talk 2019, CEO Glenda Roberts did so with the philosophy of Ubuntu which has the idea of community at the heart of it. Part of the money raised from the treatments will be donated to the bridge fund and so whilst using this service people will also be supporting the mental health of the local community. In launching this new venture, Glenda hopes to provide complete care for both mind and body whilst helping the community to care for each other by making sure mental health care is available for all.

Ultra-low emission HVO fleet takes to the road

Babergh and Mid Suffolk are the first rural UK councils to switch their fleet to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) – slashing carbon emissions by up to 90% and supporting the councils’ carbon neutral aims.

This week, the councils’ waste fleet has begun its transfer over to HVO. Its 35 waste lorries are the first to transfer, and will be followed by its smaller public realm and housing services vehicles.

By ditching diesel, they will see a significant reduction in pollutant emissions from their fleet, with up to a 90% reduction in CO2. It will also support a circular economy, as the certified sustainable HVO fuel is solely produced from waste cooking oil.

The move was approved by the councils’ cabinets in January this year, and forms a major step in their Carbon Reduction Management Plan, which sets out how net zero carbon emissions aim to be achieved by 2030.

Before HVO, the fleet represented just over a quarter (26%) of the councils’ total CO2 emissions, approximately 880 tonnes per year – which will now reduce immediately.

HVO fuel provided the councils with a near-immediate and efficient way to reduce emissions. This is because, aside from slightly increased fuel costs and new tanks, the transition from traditional diesel fuel to HVO requires minimal changes to the councils’ existing fleet.

The new fuel will cost between 10-15% more than using conventional diesel. However, by using HVO, lower maintenance costs and longer engine life for the vehicles are expected.

We are back. The successful Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts is planning a return in 2022 after an enforced break of two years due to COVID. This will be a celebration of the Festival’s 100 years anniversary and the organisers are thrilled to be facilitating the Music Section of the Festival.

We are hoping for a good variety of vocal and instrument classes to help us celebrate this important milestone in the history of the Festival.

The Festival will be held from Thursday 3 March - Sunday 6 March 2022.

Yarn Worx, Hadleigh’s New Yarn Shop

We may have only been open a few weeks but what an amazing few weeks it’s been. Our knit nights and knit & natter mornings have been a roaring success.People with common interests have come together to knit or crochet in each other’s company and some beautiful friendships have formed… One of our regular customers from Newmarket who needed some advice on a knitting pattern met up in the shop with another customer from Ipswich. These two people initially met at one of our knit nights, hit it off and swapped phone numbers.

Our learn to knit and learn to crochet courses continue to be ever popular with all current dates fully booked. We will be releasing more dates shortly so do keep in touch if you want to reserve a space on one of these. We do plan to offer different courses for more advanced knitters and crocheters.

These are likely to take place in the new year and include knitting in the round, sock knitting, Amigurumi (the art of knitting or crocheting stuffed toys), brioche knitting and more.

With the evenings drawing in and cooler weather just around the corner, we have started to think about autumnal colours and thicker, cosier yarns.

We’re back after 16 months without a rehearsal together and more than that since our last public performance. After a cautious outdoor start in July we moved rehearsals inside when the general restrictions were lifted, although masks are still used when moving around.

We welcomed Rob who joined us on bass trombone and will shortly be joined by another bass player. There are still vacancies – tenor trombone, 2nd tenor horn and bass players.

Currently we only have a couple of public performances lined up – we hope to be able to participate at the Holy Trinity Service of Remembrance on 14th November and we have booked the Village Hall for a Christmas Concert on 18th December.
